Through The Tunnel Symbolism Essay
In Doris Lessing s short story through the tunnel , she uses many different literary devices to express
various aspects of her protagonist s coming of age. Specifically, one of the most emphasized themes
throughout the whole story involves Doris Lessing s use of symbolism and characterization to relay
the ways in which physical and mental conflict build maturity of character. In her story, Jerry, a young
boy, makes a transition from boyhood to adulthood by simply swimming through an underwater
tunnel. There are many different uses of symbolism throughout the story, but probably the most
obvious is the tunnel itself. Lessing uses the tunnel to represent Jerry s struggle as he makes the leap
into adulthood. He starts his journey as a young boy, at the beginning of the tunnel. After a long swim,
that causes him great pain and suffering, he surfaces as a new person. Similar to the religious act of
baptism, he dies only to rise again a new person. He felt he was dying. He was no longer conscious...

Jerry is from England, so it is easy to imagine he is not exposed too much sun. In fact his mother is
described as being very white , and she swings her white, naked arm . The color white is often used as
a symbol of innocence and purity. The author uses this to express Jerry s lack of worldly experience.
On the other hand, the other swimmers are described as a group of big brown boys . This is used to
convey their maturity to the reader. Lessing is able to bring this around full circle by stating at the end
of the story that his mother lays her hand on his [Jerry s] warm brown shoulder . A browned skin color
is associated with maturity, and a hard day s work. By emphasizing that Jerry s skin had browned, she
was letting the reader know that this new life experience had changed him both inside and out. He was
on his way to becoming a

Experiences Of Being A Teenage Mother
Experiences of Being a Teenage Mother in the UK.
The aim of this review is to observe and describe the experiences of being a Teenage Mother. To also
create guidelines to help develop a support programme that is contextual and relevant to the needs of
teenage mothers. It was found that previous education experiences and social support groups were
important factors in influencing the way teenage mothers have adapted to being a mother and how
they practiced childcare. Becoming a teenage mother formed the feeling of responsibility within the
maternal role which led to them showing affection towards their babies. However, teenage mothers
appreciated the help they received from their families and health care providers. Instruction and ...

The aim of this review is to systematically review the qualitative evidence on the lives of teenage
mothers, under the age of twenty, within the UK from 2000 to 2014.
It is agreed that teenage pregnancy and early motherhood can also be related to those who are lacking
money, or material possessions and poor educational achievements, poor physical and mental health,
social isolation, poverty and other connected factors. There is also a rising acknowledgement that
socio economic disadvantage can be both a cause and a consequence of teenage parenthood.
Teenage pregnancy is seen as a concern in the United Kingdom (UK). There has been little research
from primary care observing teenage motherhood and its effects.
Aim:
To explore the experiences of all teenage mothers in relation to their role as a mother and their
expectations of their future as a teen mother.
Methods:
The research data discussed in this sections has been drawn from a qualitative study examining young
women s experiences to teenage motherhood. The study focused on key decisions, choices and
experiences made by young women as they became mothers.

Thesis On Attendance Checking System
Attendance checking system is a system for checking attendance of students at the University of
Sulaimaniyah. This system is an improvement of the previous attendance checking system where it
uses the implementation of the QR code system.
The following outlines how the previous system works:
1) A teacher reads the names of students from a list.
2) If there is any absentees list, the teacher will record the students by putting an A behind their names.
A is indicate Absent .
3) After checking the attendance list, the teacher enters each absent student s name on a small paper
form.
4) The attendance form is then passed to the system manager. The primary role of the system manager
is to double check the list and enters all absentee information ... Show more content on

The old version of attendance checking system of University of Sulaimaniyah is completely in manual
process. All the student information is totally filled and checked by teacher and system manager.
Although the system is work step by step, it still has a few problems that interrupt the performance of
the attendance checking system. The problems are:
The process is performed very slowly.
The mistakes in absentee rate might be occurred as the paper form can be lost.
In some cases, some teachers have problem of writing the student s name correctly. This is mean
wrong spelling or bad handwriting which leads to difficulty for the system manager to enter the data.
The form is sometimes incomplete where some fields cannot be completed such as date, subject name,
teacher name and section.
The system manager may make mistakes when calculating the absentee rate for each student.
However, the calculation process is quite involved because there is a significant amount of addition,
division and multiplication.
Students may not see the notice board that announces the attendance warnings.
The paper form may not have enough space to record all absent students

The over usage of video games has appeared to affect the mind in the OFC, the striatum, and the
sensory regions. Addict gamers appeared to have more of a impulsiveness control than the normal
gamer. Players who had played online showed an increase of gray matter density from the other
players in the left anterior cingulate cortex. Another thing I found interesting in this article was that
higher amounts of dopamine appeared in addict gamers from the reward process in videogames than
the casual gamer. The Cambridge gambling task ( which affects the brain in making poor decisions)
was found higher in addict gamers. Not only that, but addict gamers appeared to have a slower
information processing than normal players.
What I took away from the article was that video game addiction could be linked backed to the same
effects on the brain as drug abuse, or impulsive control disorders. Playing video games regularly may
not trigger these effects, but the heavy usage of video games appears to affect the rewarding process
which thus releases a higher dopamine in the brain. High concentration of dopamine can also be found
in drug which gives you that good feeling . It is not always associated, but drug abuse can occur from
a depression or other disorders. Video games also act as an escape from depression, acting almost as if
it too was a drug. Both appeared to

Famine, Affluence, And Morality By Peter Singer
In his essay Famine, Affluence, and Morality moral philosopher Peter Singer (2013) argues that
affluent individuals morally ought to provide an assistance to absolutely poor people up to the point
when further giving requires them to sacrifice anything of comparable moral significance. He relies on
the example with drowning child when proving that we should accept his strong principle which is if it
is in our power to prevent something bad from happening without thereby sacrificing anything of
comparable moral importance, we ought, morally, to do it (Singer 2013, 647). There are a lot of
objections attempting to show that this example is not a good analogy to the international aid case. If
any of them manage to do so, then the Singer s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Singer is focused on ethics and therefore his argumentation is not vulnerable to psychological or
sociological criticism discussed above. However, it can still be an important issue for practical ethicist
to consider if people will actually stick to his principle after they accept that it is morally right. Singer
must have understood that many people will probably find the his strong principle too demanding or
counter intuitive and will not follow it. To solve this problem he has worked out the moderate version
of the principle which is if it is in our power to prevent something very bad from happening, without
thereby sacrificing anything morally significant, we ought, morally, to do it (Singer 2013, 647). This
principle is more plausible for human nature as it leaves some space for individual s personal interests.
It is less ambitious and does not promote absolute equality of welfare and resources. Singer himself
agreed that in order to do the maximum to reduce absolute poverty, we should advocate a standard
lower (Singer 1993, 245). However, I think that the weak principle Singer proposes is a bit shaky
because anything morally significant is determined by subjective judgment and can indeed be morally
incorrect sometimes. For instance, in the case of drowning child I am no

Clare Boothe Luce s Speech
Clare Boothe Luce stood in front of an audience of journalists at the Woman s National Press Club,
where she, as a journalist, pointed out the flaws that the occupation of journalism holds. Luce started
her speech with a paradox, saying she was happy and flattered to be the guest of honor. Saying this
relaxed the audience, making them believe that it was going to be a genuinely joyful speech filled with
praise towards their work. She had them at the spot where they were comfortable with her, then she hit
them with guilt. She tells them that she is not as happy as she came off to be, that she is more
challenged than [they] could know. She tells the audience that her reasoning for being on stage was to

Analysis Of Ronald Regan s Voodoo Economics
What he was trying to convey were his memories of living Ludlow in New York an artist and musician
oasis in the middle of overpriced New York City. As the song goes on he touches on the people that
lived there throughout the history of the neighbourhood. He also realizes in the song that the bands
that inhabit the area pushed out previous occupants. Now my family and I find ourselves in that same
situation as we attempt to buy our first house. We are pulling up stakes and settling in one of the outer
neighborhoods of Portland and driving out its inhabitants and pricing out those left. This is the ripple
effect of gentrification. Ronald Regan would have proudly deemed a successful example of trickle
down economics. This is not Regan s voodoo economics. This is a kinder gentler version of Andrew

value of the surrounding homes. Another thing that may raise your taxes could be improvements to
your neighbourhood like a max line being installed near your street. One of the most surprising factors
is that your taxes can be raised without the appraiser ever looking at your home directly. They don t
have to enter your property or take into account the economic status of the tax payer. Another
surprising find in the article was the dramatic difference in tax rates between neighbourhood.

France and Human Rights
The French judicial system was established by Roman codified law and founded by Napoleon I in
1804 (Aguilera, p. 4). The French Constitution was formally declared on October 4, 1958, under the
Fifth Republic. Similar to the United States Constitution, the French Constitution can be amended by
the chambers of Parliament or a referendum. The last amendment to the French Constitution took
place on July 18, 2008. The revision impacted judicial powers as well as civil rights; it provided the
judicial branch a meaningful structure to examine past legislation to verify constitutionality. Within
the judicial system there is a Constitutional Council, which operates in a different capacity than other
democratic Supreme Courts. The Constitutional ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Use Of Social Media On Your Twitter Essay
Have you ever wondered how to build your email list as well as drive audience and traffic to your blog
with one product? As a website owner and blogger, I wanted to increase traffic while not
overwhelming myself with a variety of processes. It didn t seem like it would be possible since there
were different products and services for each aspect of my blogging. I could bring in traffic with one
task or increase my email list with another task. Finding a process or product that accomplished all
those tasks seemed impossible until a fellow blogger recommended Yumpu.com to create and
distribute a slick magazine. With all the traffic streams available to me, I was completely overcome
with indecision. I could use social media to drive traffic to a page of my website where I would
capture email addresses. Another option would be to send emails asking other bloggers to do guest
posts on their site. I d also need a service that would allow me to send newsletters to my audience
once I had their email addresses. Along with those functions, I d also have to have someone create the
newsletters for me as well as the page of my website to capture emails. It was all too overwhelming. I
needed one system in place to perform all those tasks. I didn t want to create a sales page as well as
weekly newsletters to get people to come to my site. When I realized I needed a great magazine to get

The Role Of Family And Caretakers Relationships
Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder that often leads to a disruptive lifestyle. It is a subgroup of bipolar
I which is manic and depressive episodes and bipolar II which is hypomanic and depressive episodes.
However, very little research has been done in terms of how this disorder impacts family members and
caretakers. The rationale behind this topic is to examine some of the research done involving strengths
and struggles of family and caretakers relationships. The articles that will be discussed include:
Family Functioning in the Context of Parental Bipolar Disorder: Association with Offspring Age, Sex,
and Psychopathology, Relatives Emotional Involvement Moderates the Effects of Family Therapy for
Bipolar, and In sickness and in health: The experiences of friends and relatives caring for people with
manic depression.
While reading these articles I noticed many of them had similar themes. One of the common themes
throughout these articles is the need to continuously do more research and provide more resources for
the caretakers. Another recurring topic in the articles was the importance family relationships have on
the individual with bipolar disorder and their outcomes with treatment, along with how these
interactions affect the other members of the family. A strength that was present in each article was the
depth of detail presented in each study; this description will make it easier to replicate the studies.
These commonalities throughout the articles may be

Examples Of A Relationship Essay
Relationship Advice All you need is love. Relationships are the building blocks of a happy life. Not
taking into account the acquaintances, who you don t know anything about, your friends and loved
ones are the only place you can go to relax and feel at home. Healthy relationships are based on trust,
honesty, listening, knowing each other, valuing the strengths and accepting the differences. A healthy
relationship doesn t mean that it is always sunshine and rainbows. It is built upon the fact that two
people are ready to work through the low times and cherish the good times. Unhealthy relationships
show signs of jealousy, egoistic problems, disrespect, judgment, intimidation and sometimes even

Ambitious people often cling together. You will never see a hippie having a healthy relationship with a
CEO. Their goals, paths and lives are entirely based on different structures. Do you even have goals?
Don t live a life of aimless existence. Be accountable for your life and live for a purpose. Resolve
conflicts Sometimes all you need to do is work on your differences. No matter how charming two
people find each other, a small conflict can lead to jealousy, hurt and huge misunderstandings which
can lead to suffering in the relationship. Show your dedication towards the relationship and work on
your issues. And afterwards you ll find your relationship was worth more than you had assumed.
Conclusion There is never a perfect person and there is never a perfect relationship. All you can have
is a fulfilling relationship and that ll come from nowhere else but your own heart. Have a big heart and

The Abolitionist William Wilberforce In Amazing Grace
Amazing Grace is a film about the abolitionist William Wilberforce. William Wilberforce was a very
strong Christian and he put all of his faith and trust in Jesus Christ. Wilberforce had very strong
foundational values as can be seen throughout the movie through his actions and choices. Wilberforce
s faith changed him from being a careless wealthy politician into a public servant that was
compassionate and caring towards everyone. He used his gifts and skills in order to help create a
better society. Wilberforce was very strong in character as he had very strong morals and always knew
the right thing to do. While most of society at that time accepted slavery as being a necessity,
Wilberforce did not conform. Most people back then has been brainwashed into believing that slavery
was okay, but that s not how Wilberforce thought. He saw that slavery was a cruel and evil thing. He
knew that it was against God s will so he did his best in order to end slavery in England. Wilberforce

Unauthorized Practice of Law Essay
In order to complete this assignment we must first recognize what Unauthorized Practice of Law is
when it comes to paralegals. There is no set definition on what UPL is but as a paralegal there are
guidelines to go by. Some ways they can violate the practice of law would be an individual holding
themselves as an attorney when they are paralegals, giving legal advice as an attorney would, or
representing clients in a court of law. All of the previous are violations and can be subject to several
disciplinary actions [ (Unauthorized Practice of Law, 2010) ]. It has been named illegal due to the
damages on may suffer due to bad legal advice. In some states it is considered a criminal offense and
could be given a jail sentence. With that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Now this one is a bit trickier than the other. To give proper advice would be giving legal advice. Mrs.
Smith would have to know the ins and outs of divorce when it comes to adultery and Polly legally
cannot supply the answer. Once again, Polly has the responsibility to let Mrs. Smith know that she is
not a lawyer and she can t give any legal advice. Information that involves the grounds for any law
suit of any matter is considered legal advice. Although Mrs. Smith may feel that a simple yes or no
will not hurt Polly, it will. One thing Polly can do that is not UPL is to advise Mrs. Smith to seek legal
representation [ (Orlik, 2007) ]. This action can save Polly a lot of hassles and the chance of getting
disciplined. Now the reasoning behind prohibiting the unauthorized practice of law is not to hurt
lawyers and anyone legally practicing law. These were put into place to help from personally
damaging cases and individuals alike. What if you were given advice and used it to help with your
case. Then come to find out that this advice or information was not at all correct and cost you your
case. You would be very adamant to return to the individual to find out what had happened. Then you
also find out that this person was not legally able to practice law in any manner. You would be furious
and would want this person to pay for his/her actions. This is an example of why it is very important
why someone that is not authorized

Parking Policies on Campus Essay
As a non traditional student of the University Mary Hardin Baylor, I can say parking policies could
use some changes. I understand the need for parking policies for safety and security reasons, but some
parking rules are just ridiculous. My family has four vehicles, only one of them has a UMHB parking
sticker. This sticker was issued at registration; it is one of the many hidden fees that are added into
tuition. I sometimes drive different vehicles to campus. When I drive different vehicles, I have to go to
campus police to get a temporary parking permit. However, I do have the option to purchase a sticker
for each vehicle, if I want to pay fifteen dollars for each sticker. Another parking issue is that vehicles
cannot be pulled through or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If vehicles have been parked incorrectly, a citation will be issued. I have read several studies that state,
pulling through or backing into a parking space is safer, it is a good idea for several of reasons. It is
easier to pull out into traffic instead of backing out into traffic. There is also a better view when
leaving. When backing out blind spots could cause an accident, pulling out into traffic the driver has
full visibility. The drivers are aware of the other vehicles and pedestrians around them. Then, when
they go to leave, they have good, clear view to pull out. There is even a policy on where students are
allowed to park. If a student parks in the restricted areas, or is parked incorrectly, they will be issued a
citation.
Additional parking stickers mean additional fees for the student. College is already expensive, extra
fees are just a way for the college to get more money. Since all vehicles must have a parking permit I
have to go get a temporary parking permit every time I use other vehicles. This is time consuming and
having to go by the campus police to get a parking permit is inconvenient. I work a full time job as
well as going to college full time, so my time is limited. I drop my youngest son off at school on my
way to campus, so my mornings are already busy. As soon as class is over, I go straight to work. I
leave work to come straight to campus for evening classes. Sometimes, I have just enough time to get
to class. If I have to stop

Tracking Pba Schedule
INTRODUCTORY SUMMARY
In the past two years, our company has consistently missed the release dates for our PBA (printed
board assembly) products. These missed releases have resulted in fines to the company, and extreme
customer dissatisfaction. We have had to reduce our workforce considerably over the past year, and in
the process, we have lost experienced employee talent. Middle management has accepted the
challenge to develop a PBA Design to Release Spreadsheet. This spreadsheet process will assist our
Research and Development organization in achieving the company s goal to honor its contractual
obligations to customers. Since budget cuts are in place, the spreadsheet will be developed based on
existing resources and work force. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Once each group has agreed upon their responsibilities, the Team Lead will present the list to the Core
Team. In the past, when this kind of information has been collected, the biggest concern expressed
from all of the groups is the limited amount of time they have to complete their job efficiently. Their
main concern is limited personnel and resources. This spreadsheet tracking process will present a
work culture challenge in the way our teams approach their tasks.
CORE TEAM REVIEWS EACH GROUP S DEFINITION OF DUTIES
After each group has completed their list of tasks and timelines, the Core Team reviews the combined
results. The Core Team s goal is to evaluate the lists, and incorporate them into the final spreadsheet.
The spreadsheet will define the fundamental duties and timelines to complete for each group. The
ultimate goal is to get the product to the customer within eight months.
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The logical approach is to start to perform the design work in parallel across groups, when practical.
This practice of concurrent engineering is commonly used by understaffed, schedule driven
companies. Using this method, each group can be working on their portion of the design, without
having to wait for the previous group to complete their portion. When the schedule of the PBA release
has been established, an excel spreadsheet is generated with each participant s responsibilities and
timelines.

Today s companies may struggle with developing and maintaining a strategy to ensure long term

Review of Case Study
Under Armour History
Founded in 1996, Under Armour was the brainchild of Kevin Plank, a former University of Maryland
football player. Kevin Plank understood that today s athletes required performance apparel beyond the
ordinary cotton T shirt, a performance shirt that would allow them to remain cool, dry, and light
during long workouts and games. Kevin s plan was to develop a T shirt that provided a tight,
comfortable fit and transferred perspiration and moisture away from the athlete s body to evaporate
quickly, thus regulating the wearer s body temperature. After developing a prototype T shirt, with the
newly obtainable polyester blend, moisture wicking fabric, Mr. Plank formed an S corporation in
Maryland named KP Sports (Thompson A. A., 2014).
Under Armour s mission has always been clear and focused, to make all athletes better through

Pink Floy s Mother Analysis
Pink Floyd s Mother debuted on November 30th, 1979. While Kendrick Lamar s FEAR. debuted on
April 14th, 2017. Although nearly 38 years apart, the two songs show a deep response to the tactics of
their mother s parenthood. To begin, Mother is sung with incredible eeriness and passion. The
structure of the song brings to life the singer s (Roger Waters) confusion towards his mother. In the
beginning of the song, they ask, Mother, do you think they ll like this song? Mother, do you think they
ll try to break my balls? These lines refer to the public as they . He is asking his mother, in a curious,
youthful state if the world will like his music, and if they will ridicule him for it. This plea for
reassurance shows how devoted he is to his mother. Waters also asks his mother, should I build the
wall? his reason for asking this question shows he is willing to block out the world if his mother told
him to do so. The next verse discloses that his mother will not let the evil from the world harm him, as
she says, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
quite literally discusses Lamar s fear of his mother. He uses fast, forceful phrases to inflict a sense of
anxiety. Unlike Pink Floyd s mother, Lamar s did not use the fearsome reality of the world to control
him, rather, she used herself as the object of fear. In the first verse, Kendrick relives instances where
his mother told him that she would beat his a** if he did anything she did not approve of. These
situations imposed serious control of Kendrick s lifestyle and responsibilities. Moreover, near the end
of the second verse Kendrick says, All worries in a hurry, I wish I controlled things. This desire shows
how, much like Pink Floyd s need to tear down the wall, Kendrick needs to control things the way his
mother did. In summary, Kendrick Lamar expresses a rooted fear of his mother, rather than the world.
But, this fear was brought to him in the same way Pink Floyd s was, through consistent domination

Adaptation Of The African Queen
This is a British American Movie that was acted in 1951 and this was an adaptation of the novel The
African Queen that was written in 1935 by C.S Forester. The director of this film is John Huston and
the producers were John Woolf and Sam Spiegel. The characters Samuel Sayer and his sister Rose are
missionaries from Britain who have gone on a mission in Kungdu, a village of German s colony in
East Africa just when the First World War had started. All the supplies and mails are delivered by a
small boat that uses steam and it is named African Queen and it is driven by a rough Canadian who
has an intolerable behavior and whose name is Charllie. He warns these two missionaries that there is
war between Germany and Britain but they choose not to escape but rather remain and thus witness
how the Germans burn down completely their mission center and capture all the villagers into slavery.
Samuel decides to show protest against this evil acts and he is eventually captured and beaten brutally
by the German soldiers and this is the eventual cause of his death (Huston Agee). There is a lot of
enmity displayed by the Germans against the British and to the Africans and thus it is suicidal to pass
through or near a German fortress. Everything is just too dangerous in this movie especially where the
Germans are concerned. When Rose and Chrilie decide to navigate to the Ulanga River, they have to

Religious Tolerance During The Enlightenment
During the eighteenth century, Enlightenment philosophers had put their thoughts and ideas into the
minds of society. They were able to profoundly influence their opinions to members of their
governments and religion. This allowed them to question their daily life and rebel against the actions
of both their politics and religious officials. The philosophy of religious tolerance was the most
fascinating because it had made me realize that the critical Christian religious ideas were considered
unusual to some members of their faith which led them to challenge their leaders.
First of all, a fascinating philosophy to me was that of Voltaire who argued that the Catholic church
was corrupt because of their practices amongst its members. In Voltaire s ... Show more content on

Not only does he mention this but also says that this is uncommon for any city in Europe because,
there have not been lots of massacres for religious purposes (Spielvogel, pg 509). Voltaire claims that
the Catholics need to be ashamed of themselves of these killings because it was an embarrassing event
for those who were victims of the massacre. He states, I say so far that from forgetting these horrible
times, we should reflect on the terror of them and, that is for our age to make reparation by toleration (
Spielvogel, 509). According to Wendy McElroy s article on the origin of religious tolerance, she said,
Voltaire argued that the church s politics favored more prejudice than toleration (independent.org).
Another piece of evidence that Voltaire used to prove the corruption of the Catholic church was that
the minister was also corrupt because he discriminated against Candide who had refused to give some
money to the church cause because he believed that there was no purpose for the cause. Voltaire
quotes Candide, There isn t an effect without a cause (Spielvogel,509). Then Voltaire says that
Chaplain was the only person who had refused to give him the bread because he thought that he was
arguing that the pope is the devil. Back to

Burmese Days by George Orwell is not a book that commonly comes to mind when one thinks Orwell
but nevertheless it holds a distinguished place in his career as a writer. The novel revolves around the
lives of a handful of high class English gentlemen living in Burma during the time of the British
colonial period. The story focuses on one man in particular; John Flory, who gradually succumbs to

To them the Burmans are nothing more than maids, slaves, and peasants. When the European Club is
asked to elect a non white member all the Englishmen feel annoyed and infuriated that they must
choose somebody that they consider of such filth and low rank in society. Discrimination plays an
important role because it creates one of the main conflicts of the novel. John Flory does not share the
ill feelings of his companions but his lack of courage and fear of rejection cause him to retain all of his
feelings and protests; a situation which subsequently tears John s conscience in two. Self acceptance is
one of John s major obstacles as a person. He envisions himself as repulsive and emotionally and
physically languid. His pessimistic feelings towards himself prevent him from being able to confess
his love to Elizabeth and express his pro Burma feelings at the European Club. Due to his inability to
do so, feelings of cynicism and melancholy build up in John, which in turn give way to less and less
confidence. As John continuous his way down his emotional spiral he never does realize that all his
fears and problems were caused by fears and problems within himself. Isolation is an important factor
in the story because it creates an inevitable prison of detachment and despair that John has no way of
escaping. John does not feel at home with the rest of the few Englishmen living in Burma because of
their bigotry, yet he does not fit in with the

The Importance Of The Korean War
In America we always remember the importance of the wars we fought. For some reason most people
always forget or skip the Korean War. Korea was a small colony that was taken over by Japan in 1910.
When World War II ended Japan s government was falling apart and could no longer support Korea.
This left the colony to anyone who wanted it, and Russia answered the call. Russia successfully
conquered the north when the south contacted the U.S. to stop them. War broke out on June 25, 1950
which had sealed the fate of the Korean Peninsula. The Korean War was mostly a coalition with
communist values and capitalist values. The outcome of this war has shaped the way works. The
Korean War was very important to the world because it showed that America was unprepared, the
Korean Peninsula was divided, and the countries who were involved. America being unprepared for

penetrate the heavy armor of the T 34 tanks. (Washington Post) After the Koreans came in with the

The Importance Of Education In Public Education
Education in schools today is very important to a student s success. From reading a particular passage,
I read about a particular student who was denied as school valedictorian for the simple fact that she
was black. To fully understand what role integration plays, or should play in public education today,
there are some key components that one must understand. The first component addresses how much it
really matters to see that schools are pretty much segregated as they were in 1968. To my intellect, it s
colossally noteworthy. In case you think approximately the two principal purposes of open instruction,
it s to advance social portability so that a child, no matter the circumstances, can, through a great
instruction, go where their abilities would take them. The reason is to reinforce our popular
government by making cleverly and open minded citizens, and related to that, to construct social
cohesion. We are a country where individuals come from all corners of the world so it s imperative
that the open schools be a place where children learn what it implies to be an American, and learn the
values of a majority rule government, one of which is that we re all social. Isolation by race and by
financial status essentially undermines both of those goals. To my mind this issue of segregation,
which gets talked about very little, is central to undermining the twin rationales for public schooling in
the first place. The second component addresses race. Parents of children argue

After WWII and until 1955, France fought hard to regain their former territories in the region, but with

Between 1955 and 1960, the North Vietnamese with the assistance of the southern communist
Vietcong, tried to take over the government in South Vietnam, and in November 1963 President Diem

Essay on Gloria Naylor s Mama Day
Gloria Naylor s Mama Day
It is impossible to interpret Gloria Naylor s 1988 novel, Mama Day, in one way. There are multiple
standpoints that a reader can take in explaining various events that occur throughout the book, as well
as different ways that the characters in the book interpret these events. The author never fully clarifies
many questions that the story generates so as to leave the readers with the opportunity to answer them
based on their own personal experiences and beliefs. The multiplicity of perspectives in Gloria Naylor
s Mama Day is embodied in the legend of Sapphira Wade and the dynamics between logic and the
supernatural and between George and Cocoa.
Sapphira Wade is a character that Naylor uses as a tool ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The descendents of Sapphira all received deeds to pieces of land in Willow Springs in 1823. How the
descendants of a slave woman came to inherit the land of slave owner is unclear because different
interpretations of the event that occurred in 1823 seem to have been developed from generation to
generation. For instance, some say Sapphira smothered Bascombe Wade in his very bed, while others
say she persuaded Bascombe Wade in a thousand days to deed all his slaves every inch of land in
Willow Springs and poisoned him for his trouble (Naylor 3). These different interpretations apparently
lead to the development to the use of the phrase 18 23 as a slang term. For some, the phrase seems to
represent death and destruction whereas others use it synonymously with deception. But no matter
what actually happened in 1823, the fact that so many views are accepted by the community conveys
to the reader the importance of open mindedness in reading the book. Naylor continues to suggest the
significance of open mindedness by providing the reader with the opportunity to choose more than one
way to explain Mama Day s encounter with Bernice. Bernice decides to seek the advice of Mama Day,
who is known to have miraculous healing abilities, when she has trouble conceiving. Mama Day gives
Bernice pumpkin seeds and puts her under the impression that they are magic seeds (Naylor 96). This
gives Bernice time to build

Ashmore v. J.P. Thayer Co.
Citation
Ashmore v. J. P. Thayer Co., 303 F. Supp. 2d 1359 (M.D. Ga. 2004).
Statement of Facts
Marcus Ashmore and Terrell Lee Green were maintenance workers for J.P. Thayer Co., Inc. under
supervisor Gene Fye. After a particular incident of harassment on January 16, 2001, Plaintiffs reported
Fye to Tricia Johnson, the Assistant Property Manager. At this time, Johnson did nothing about the
complaint. The harassment continued, and on January 26, Plaintiffs complained to the Property
Manager, Mary Frances de Rivera. In response, de Rivera verbally reprimanded Fye. This, however,
did not stop Fye s harassment. Instead of reporting the behavior to Defendant, Plaintiffs hired an
attorney who wrote a letter to Defendant saying that Ashmore and Green were going to file charges of
discrimination with the EEOC. On February 22, Fye was fired by Defendant. This came three days
after getting the letter and about a month after the initial harassment complaints.
Procedural History
The Plaintiffs filed a lawsuit at the United States District Court for the Middle District of Georgia. The
verdict of the jury found the Defendant liable and was in favor of the Plaintiffs. Defendant then filed a
motion for a new trial for judgment as a matter of law.
Issue Presented
Should J. P. Thayer Co., Inc. be held liable for the harassment of supervisor, Gene Fye.
Court s Holding:
The Court ruled in favor of the Defendant. Therefore, the Defendant isn t liable to

approximately 17% of the world s total annual output of silver. Zacatecas produces about 40% of the
country s total silver output which is more than Mexico City. (5 THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY

is known for its fine ironwork and for its buildings of pink sandstone. Tourists visit the cathedral
(which dates from the 18th century) and Enrique Estrada Park, which has an aqueduct from the 18th
century. Special events include the Zacatecas Fair (second week of September) and the De la Morisma
Fair (celebrated the last three days in August). Most of the income does not come from tourism but
from mining or agriculture. Making tourism more sustainable is not just about controlling and
managing the negative impacts of the industry. Tourism is in a very special position to benefit local
communities, economically and socially, and to raise awareness and support for conservation of the
environment.

Republican Party Vs Democratic Party
A Democrat and a Republican walk into a bar where previously only Independents frequented. The
crowd shouts, now it s a real party! The Republican and Democratic party make up the two most
popular parties in the United States, with 53% of Americans identifying with one or the other party
(Gallup, Party Affiliation ). While most Americans know that the majority of their fellow citizens
eventually will identify as either a Republican or a Democrat, the overall process of party selection
and identification is not as clear. Additionally, different current events can shift the way that
Americans identify with parties, even if they have had a strong loyalty to one party for their entire life.

Although the book was not published too long ago, the fact that it was published in 2008 makes it
unable to account the changes that have come about in the United States that have made it easier for
young adults to become more involved in politics. Lewis Beck notes that few young adults express a
strong party attachment, whereas those with a lifetime of experience do (145). While young adults
may not have as high of a voter turnout as older generations, this is not necessarily the only way to
measure the political activity of a cohort. When the research by Lewis Beck was published, social
media was only beginning to become popular. Facebook was only four years old, and Twitter only
two. Now, the younger generation has taken to social network services, like Facebook and Twitter, to
spread voter education. Additionally, the utilization of websites like Change.org to express contempt
with certain political views has become more common among younger

Theme Of Poison In Hamlet
Hamlet by William Shakespeare is a tragedy about the life of Hamlet after his father, the King of
Denmark, is killed. Throughout the play, there are many objects that are important to the characters
and the plot as a whole. One of the objects brought up multiple times in the text that is crucial to the
story is poison. The use of poison as a means to kill in Hamlet shows that Claudius is a coward.
In the beginning of the play, Claudius is introduced as a coward when it is revealed that he murdered
King Hamlet with poison. When the Ghost, the ghost of King Hamlet, tells Hamlet about how he was
killed, the Ghost says, Now, Hamlet, hear: / Tis given out that, sleeping in my orchard, / A serpent
stung me. / So the whole ear of Denmark / Is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

when Hamlet, Gertrude, and Claudius, and Laertes are all killed by poison at the end of the novel,

Fallibility is Human and Necessary for Change Essay
There is not a single person who has avoided being wrong throughout his or her entire life, or maybe
even day. But also, nobody, or at least very few, accept fallibility as tolerable. Throughout history,
there have been people who refuse to be wrong, and it often has lead to despondency. Although
everyone wants to be right, fallibility is a necessary step to avoiding harm and improving the world.
Nobody wants to be wrong. It is associated with shame, stupidity, ignorance, indolence,
psychopathology, and moral degeneracy (Schulz). Also, as people, we revel in other s wrongness as
much as we do our own accuracy, which has created an environment in which being wrong is
unnerving to the point of a possible, legitimate fear. But not only is ... Show more content on

From this, he deduced that those who had the highest reputation were nearly the most deficient, while
those who were thought to be inferior were more knowledgeable (Plato 25). Now, to achieve this
society in which being wrong is accepted would require man to graciously accept the bespoken of one
s wrongs by another. This should occur naturally, because as Socrates recognizes, someone pointing
out somebody s wrong is the equivalent to that person saving him or her. On the contrary, a wrong
may not be wrong merely due to someone saying that such is the case. Often, something will be
viewed as wrong for being different from what is standard. Aside from all of this, Socrates believed in
highlighting justness rather than ever focusing on being right or being wrong. Knowing that wisdom
and being right are worthless is the somewhat paradoxical product of wisdom. Being right should not
be glorifying.
*Insert Caesar Paragraph* Julius Caesar refused collaboration due to his belief in his infallibility, and
it led to his murder. Caesar wanted to run Rome by himself. He drove Marcus Bibulus, his fellow

others regardless of their boldness. He acted alone as though he would never be wrong and didn t trust
others to that same standard he held of himself. Due to his

Rogers View Of The Good Life
My Thoughts: Rogers description of the good life as a direction is incredibly different from the
American perspective that happiness is a singular goal one can achieve. We often think that, once we
reach a point in life where we re happy, that we ll stay that way indefinitely. Rogers perspective is less
palatable, but probably more accurate.
My Thoughts: To me, this was Roger s most interesting and thought provoking quote. When he says
that someone living the good life would very likely not be a conformist, it makes me think about the
fact that most people are conformists. I don t think being a conformist is a fixed aspect of who people
are, but I do think it s very hard to overcome for people who have lived much of their lives that ...

I think that the people close to us have a responsibility to tell us how they perceive our behavior.
Whether or not we agree with it, it s still helpful to know that others may not always take things as we
mean them to. This quote made me think of an argument I had with my step father when I was around
12 or so. We were talking about how the constant arguments we had were making the house a very
negative place to be. I said, Well, if you don t like it, you can leave! He perceived that as me telling
him to get out of the house, but I meant that because he was an adult and had a car and money, he was
able to drive away from the house if he wanted and take a break from it, whereas I was stuck there. We
didn t clear up the misunderstanding at the time, but when I talked to my brother later that night, he
pointed out to me that that was how everyone else in the family had taken my comment. I would never
have even considered that that was how they would have heard it, but having that pointed out to me
has made me more cognizant of the way I word things, even now, almost 10 years later. By pointing
out to me how my words were taken by the rest of the family, I was able to grow in my ability to
consider others

The Civil War Of Iran Essay
Historical Background
Throughout the 1980 s, Lebanon was engulfed in a brutal civil war that was waged between the
government and different rebel factions. Hezbollah, a fundamentalist Shia militant group allied with
the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), was one of the major forces fighting against the
Lebanese government. With Ronald Reagan as acting president of the United States, he made an effort
toward stabilizing the Area by sending peacekeeping forces to Beirut. In retaliation to this
involvement, a suicide bomber drove a truck into a military barracks, killing 241 peacekeepers on
October 23, 1983. 21 suspects were detained in suspicion of being involved in the planning of the
attack; Hezbollah, in retaliation, began to kidnap American and western individuals, demanding the
release of these men along with other outrageous concessions. Meanwhile, only a few countries away,
the newly formed Islamic Republic of Iran was at war against its secular neighbor, Iraq. Prior to the
Iranian Revolution, America had close relations with Iran s former leader, Shah Mohammad Reza
Pahlavi, and supplied the regime with American made military equipment. The new Iranians leaders,
however, had begun to exhaust these munitions from its war with Iraq, requiring more weapons and
spare parts in order to effectively thwart the advances by Saddam Hussein s army. The United States
however, had vowed neutrality, stating they would not sell arms to the belligerents of the war. In the

  • 2. Through The Tunnel Symbolism Essay In Doris Lessing s short story through the tunnel , she uses many different literary devices to express various aspects of her protagonist s coming of age. Specifically, one of the most emphasized themes throughout the whole story involves Doris Lessing s use of symbolism and characterization to relay the ways in which physical and mental conflict build maturity of character. In her story, Jerry, a young boy, makes a transition from boyhood to adulthood by simply swimming through an underwater tunnel. There are many different uses of symbolism throughout the story, but probably the most obvious is the tunnel itself. Lessing uses the tunnel to represent Jerry s struggle as he makes the leap into adulthood. He starts his journey as a young boy, at the beginning of the tunnel. After a long swim, that causes him great pain and suffering, he surfaces as a new person. Similar to the religious act of baptism, he dies only to rise again a new person. He felt he was dying. He was no longer conscious... An immense, swelling pain filled his head, and then ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jerry is from England, so it is easy to imagine he is not exposed too much sun. In fact his mother is described as being very white , and she swings her white, naked arm . The color white is often used as a symbol of innocence and purity. The author uses this to express Jerry s lack of worldly experience. On the other hand, the other swimmers are described as a group of big brown boys . This is used to convey their maturity to the reader. Lessing is able to bring this around full circle by stating at the end of the story that his mother lays her hand on his [Jerry s] warm brown shoulder . A browned skin color is associated with maturity, and a hard day s work. By emphasizing that Jerry s skin had browned, she was letting the reader know that this new life experience had changed him both inside and out. He was on his way to becoming a ... To also create guidelines to help develop a support programme that is contextual and relevant to the needs of teenage mothers. It was found that previous education experiences and social support groups were important factors in influencing the way teenage mothers have adapted to being a mother and how they practiced childcare. Famine, Affluence, And Morality By Peter Singer In his essay Famine, Affluence, and Morality moral philosopher Peter Singer (2013) argues that affluent individuals morally ought to provide an assistance to absolutely poor people up to the point when further giving requires them to sacrifice anything of comparable moral significance. He relies on the example with drowning child when proving that we should accept his strong principle which is if it is in our power to prevent something bad from happening without thereby sacrificing anything of comparable moral importance, we ought, morally, to do it (Singer 2013, 647). However, it can still be an important issue for practical ethicist to consider if people will actually stick to his principle after they accept that it is morally right. Singer must have understood that many people will probably find the his strong principle too demanding or counter intuitive and will not follow it. To solve this problem he has worked out the moderate version of the principle which is if it is in our power to prevent something very bad from happening, without thereby sacrificing anything morally significant, we ought, morally, to do it (Singer 2013, 647). This principle is more plausible for human nature as it leaves some space for individual s personal interests. It is less ambitious and does not promote absolute equality of welfare and resources. Singer himself agreed that in order to do the maximum to reduce absolute poverty, we should advocate a standard lower (Singer 1993, 245). However, I think that the weak principle Singer proposes is a bit shaky because anything morally significant is determined by subjective judgment and can indeed be morally incorrect sometimes. They were able to profoundly influence their opinions to members of their governments and religion. This allowed them to question their daily life and rebel against the actions of both their politics and religious officials. The philosophy of religious tolerance was the most fascinating because it had made me realize that the critical Christian religious ideas were considered unusual to some members of their faith which led them to challenge their leaders. First of all, a fascinating philosophy to me was that of Voltaire who argued that the Catholic church was corrupt because of their practices amongst its members. In Voltaire s ... He states, I say so far that from forgetting these horrible times, we should reflect on the terror of them and, that is for our age to make reparation by toleration ( Spielvogel, 509). According to Wendy McElroy s article on the origin of religious tolerance, she said, Voltaire argued that the church s politics favored more prejudice than toleration (independent.org). Another piece of evidence that Voltaire used to prove the corruption of the Catholic church was that the minister was also corrupt because he discriminated against Candide who had refused to give some money to the church cause because he believed that there was no purpose for the cause. Voltaire quotes Candide, There isn t an effect without a cause (Spielvogel,509). From reading a particular passage, I read about a particular student who was denied as school valedictorian for the simple fact that she was black. To fully understand what role integration plays, or should play in public education today, there are some key components that one must understand. The first component addresses how much it really matters to see that schools are pretty much segregated as they were in 1968. To my intellect, it s colossally noteworthy. In case you think approximately the two principal purposes of open instruction, it s to advance social portability so that a child, no matter the circumstances, can, through a great instruction, go where their abilities would take them. The reason is to reinforce our popular government by making cleverly and open minded citizens, and related to that, to construct social cohesion. We are a country where individuals come from all corners of the world so it s imperative that the open schools be a place where children learn what it implies to be an American, and learn the values of a majority rule government, one of which is that we re all social. Isolation by race and by financial status essentially undermines both of those goals. To my mind this issue of segregation, which gets talked about very little, is central to undermining the twin rationales for public schooling in the first place. The second component addresses race. How the descendants of a slave woman came to inherit the land of slave owner is unclear because different interpretations of the event that occurred in 1823 seem to have been developed from generation to generation. For instance, some say Sapphira smothered Bascombe Wade in his very bed, while others say she persuaded Bascombe Wade in a thousand days to deed all his slaves every inch of land in Willow Springs and poisoned him for his trouble (Naylor 3). These different interpretations apparently lead to the development to the use of the phrase 18 23 as a slang term. For some, the phrase seems to represent death and destruction whereas others use it synonymously with deception. But no matter what actually happened in 1823, the fact that so many views are accepted by the community conveys to the reader the importance of open mindedness in reading the book. Naylor continues to suggest the significance of open mindedness by providing the reader with the opportunity to choose more than one way to explain Mama Day s encounter with Bernice. Bernice decides to seek the advice of Mama Day, who is known to have miraculous healing abilities, when she has trouble conceiving. Mama Day gives Bernice pumpkin seeds and puts her under the impression that they are magic seeds (Naylor 96). This gives Bernice time to build ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Lewis Beck notes that few young adults express a strong party attachment, whereas those with a lifetime of experience do (145). While young adults may not have as high of a voter turnout as older generations, this is not necessarily the only way to measure the political activity of a cohort. When the research by Lewis Beck was published, social media was only beginning to become popular. Facebook was only four years old, and Twitter only two. Now, the younger generation has taken to social network services, like Facebook and Twitter, to spread voter education. Throughout the play, there are many objects that are important to the characters and the plot as a whole. One of the objects brought up multiple times in the text that is crucial to the story is poison. The use of poison as a means to kill in Hamlet shows that Claudius is a coward. In the beginning of the play, Claudius is introduced as a coward when it is revealed that he murdered King Hamlet with poison. • 46. Fallibility is Human and Necessary for Change Essay There is not a single person who has avoided being wrong throughout his or her entire life, or maybe even day. But also, nobody, or at least very few, accept fallibility as tolerable. Throughout history, there have been people who refuse to be wrong, and it often has lead to despondency. Although everyone wants to be right, fallibility is a necessary step to avoiding harm and improving the world. Nobody wants to be wrong. It is associated with shame, stupidity, ignorance, indolence, psychopathology, and moral degeneracy (Schulz). Also, as people, we revel in other s wrongness as much as we do our own accuracy, which has created an environment in which being wrong is unnerving to the point of a possible, legitimate fear. From this, he deduced that those who had the highest reputation were nearly the most deficient, while those who were thought to be inferior were more knowledgeable (Plato 25). Now, to achieve this society in which being wrong is accepted would require man to graciously accept the bespoken of one s wrongs by another. This should occur naturally, because as Socrates recognizes, someone pointing out somebody s wrong is the equivalent to that person saving him or her. On the contrary, a wrong may not be wrong merely due to someone saying that such is the case. Often, something will be viewed as wrong for being different from what is standard. Aside from all of this, Socrates believed in highlighting justness rather than ever focusing on being right or being wrong. Knowing that wisdom and being right are worthless is the somewhat paradoxical product of wisdom. Being right should not be glorifying. *Insert Caesar Paragraph* Julius Caesar refused collaboration due to his belief in his infallibility, and it led to his murder. • 47. Rogers View Of The Good Life My Thoughts: Rogers description of the good life as a direction is incredibly different from the American perspective that happiness is a singular goal one can achieve. We often think that, once we reach a point in life where we re happy, that we ll stay that way indefinitely. Rogers perspective is less palatable, but probably more accurate. My Thoughts: To me, this was Roger s most interesting and thought provoking quote. When he says that someone living the good life would very likely not be a conformist, it makes me think about the fact that most people are conformists. I don t think being a conformist is a fixed aspect of who people are, but I do think it s very hard to overcome for people who have lived much of their lives that ... Whether or not we agree with it, it s still helpful to know that others may not always take things as we mean them to. This quote made me think of an argument I had with my step father when I was around 12 or so. We were talking about how the constant arguments we had were making the house a very negative place to be. I said, Well, if you don t like it, you can leave! He perceived that as me telling him to get out of the house, but I meant that because he was an adult and had a car and money, he was able to drive away from the house if he wanted and take a break from it, whereas I was stuck there. We didn t clear up the misunderstanding at the time, but when I talked to my brother later that night, he pointed out to me that that was how everyone else in the family had taken my comment. I would never have even considered that that was how they would have heard it, but having that pointed out to me has made me more cognizant of the way I word things, even now, almost 10 years later. • 49. The Civil War Of Iran Essay Historical Background Throughout the 1980 s, Lebanon was engulfed in a brutal civil war that was waged between the government and different rebel factions. Hezbollah, a fundamentalist Shia militant group allied with the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), was one of the major forces fighting against the Lebanese government. With Ronald Reagan as acting president of the United States, he made an effort toward stabilizing the Area by sending peacekeeping forces to Beirut. In retaliation to this involvement, a suicide bomber drove a truck into a military barracks, killing 241 peacekeepers on October 23, 1983. 21 suspects were detained in suspicion of being involved in the planning of the attack; Hezbollah, in retaliation, began to kidnap American and western individuals, demanding the release of these men along with other outrageous concessions. Meanwhile, only a few countries away, the newly formed Islamic Republic of Iran was at war against its secular neighbor, Iraq. Prior to the Iranian Revolution, America had close relations with Iran s former leader, Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, and supplied the regime with American made military equipment.
