Drylands support valuable ecosystems and livelihoods but are threatened by desertification and climate change. Desertification leads to loss of productivity and ecosystem services in arid and semi-arid regions. Climate change is expected to increase temperatures and decrease precipitation in these areas, stressing vegetation, livestock, and human populations. Africa and Asia will have the most people affected by desertification, especially poor, women, and children. Response options that mitigate climate change and advance sustainability goals include land adaptation practices, renewable energy, and policies around land use, tenure, and risk sharing.
