Digital Humanities for Undergraduates
The digital humanities offer one avenue for exploring the future of liberal education by pursuing essential learning goals and high impact practices in a digital context. This panel of faculty, staff and students from the Tri-College Consortium (Bryn Mawr, Haverford and Swarthmore Colleges), Furman University, Hamilton College, and Wheaton College will share how students have used digital methodologies to engage in authentic, applied research and prepare to be citizens in a networked world.

Emerging technologies for teaching and learning: a tour of the 2010 horizon
How is the landscape for teaching and learning with technology changing this year? We begin with an overview of current methods for apprehending emergent technologies, including Delphi, futures markets, networks, and scenarios. Drawing on those methods we identify a series of emerging trends, from interface changes to open content to gaming. Next we delve into several high-impact fields. Social media has already transformed the general cybercultural world, and is reshaping the academy. Mobile devices have begun to revolutionize many levels of our technological interactions.
I research and develop programs on the advanced uses of information technology in liberal arts colleges. My specialties include digital writing, weblogs, copyright and intellectual property, information literacy, wireless culture and teaching, project management, information design, and interdisciplinary collaboration. I contribute to a series of weblogs, including NITLE Tech News, MANE IT leaders, and Smartmobs, when not creating digital learning objects (like Gormenghast). I’ve taught English and information technology studies at the University of Michigan and Centenary College.

Why do we need to organise information more effectively? How do we incorporate the evolving semantic web environments? In a world of API and big data, libraries (and in particular school libraries) are faced with a significant ‘conceptual’ challenge. The new RDA cataloguing standard will substantively influence and then change information organization, focusing on users, access and interoperability. Search interfaces will be the key. We’re not dealing with records anymore. We are working with interrelated nodes of data. Are you prepared?

Technology and social media platforms are driving an unprecedented reorganization of the learning environment in and beyond schools around the world. Technology provides us leadership challenges and at the same time offers opportunities for communication and learning through technology channels to support professional development. School librarians and teacher librarians are often working as the sole information practitioner in their school, and need to stay in touch with others beyond their own school to develop their personal professional capacity to lead within their school. The Australian Teacher Librarian Network aims to make a difference, and supports school library staff in Australia and around the world to build professional networks and personal learning connections, offering an open and free exchange of ideas, strategies and resources to build collegiality. This ongoing professional conversation through online and social media channels is an important way to connect, communicate and collaborate in building a vibrant future for school librarians.

I identify some of the different ways in which various groups of people experience information and information literacy (IL) in the 21st Century, with reference to 21st Century research. I go on to discuss some of the key aspects of IL that need more attention. I see these elements as evolutionary development of IL as a 21st Century concept, not as something completely new and different.

Digital methodologies and new media are changing the landscape of research and teaching in the humanities. Scholars can now computationally analyze entire corpora of texts or preserve and share materials through digital archives. Students can engage in authentic applied research linking literary texts to place or study Shakespeare in a virtual Globe Theater. Such developments collectively fall under the name “digital humanities,” which includes the humanities and humanistic social sciences and has largely been characterized by computing-intensive, collaborative, interdisciplinary projects at research institutions. Faculty, staff and students at small liberal arts colleges, however, are making significant contributions to the digital humanities, especially by engaging undergraduates both in and out of the classroom. In this presentation, Alex Juhasz, Director of the Mellon DH Grant and Professor of Media Studies at Pitzer College, along with Ashley Sanders, Digital Scholarship Librarian and DH specialist, will describe
(1) what the digital humanities is (and digital scholarship more broadly)
(2) the opportunities the Mellon DH grant and the Claremont Colleges Library provide for faculty and students to learn more, and
(3) present a snapshot of some of the exciting work already happening at the 7Cs.

High-Impact Educational Practices in the Online Classroom?Rebecca Davis
In 2014, 28% of students took a distance course, with the majority of those (67%) attending public institutions and 35% at public two-year institutions. While online learning promises to improve access, it often seems incompatible with high-impact practices (HIPs) that benefit low income and underserved students. Panelists, drawing on personal experience teaching online and the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) Online Humanities Consortia, Open Learning: A Connectivist MOOC for Faculty Collaboratives in the state of Virginia, and Digital Pedagogy in the Humanities: Concepts, Models, and Experiments, will discuss opportunities and strategies for HIPs, including writing-intensive courses, collaborative assignments, undergraduate research, diversity/global learning, service learning, and capstone courses, in an online setting. Small groups will explore models, discuss challenges of implementation, and consider institutional strategies to address those challenges.

What skills, abilities, and habits of mind do today’s graduates need for their careers and to solve complex problems in a constantly changing, globally-connected world? How do we integrate liberal education and authentic learning experiences with our digitally-networked context? What does community-engagement look like in a virtual community? In this session participants will consider case-studies of technology-enhanced community-engaged learning drawn from Digital Pedagogy in the Humanities: Concepts, Models, and Experiments (co-edited by the session leader) with a focus on digital pedagogy keywords such as, Community, Digital-Divides, Fieldwork, Public, Race, and Social Justice. Participants will develop a curriculum that scaffolds self-directed digitally-augmented problem-solving from introductory to capstone level courses. Participants will explore innovative pedagogies, interrogate effective models for integrating authentic learning opportunities shaped by digital tools and resources at all levels, and work collaboratively to develop a toolkit and to-do list for encouraging this type of learning on their own campus.

This session will explore alternate models for understanding the faculty role drawn from digital learning models and strategies for promoting that role at the individual, departmental, and institutional level. It will also examine the role of contingent faculty in this ecosystem. Participants will collaboratively create a toolkit for redefining faculty roles on their own campus.

The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

What follows are screen shots from one student’s digital
archive. In the “real” thing, all links are live (and many are
invisible here), and allow the reader to move through
primary texts and arguments freely.
42. Prior to the ratification of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776,
many American colonists had been engaged in political discussions and
disputes regarding the taxable status of essential food items. Indeed, due to
the successive English parliamentary acts that imposed tariffs on molasses,
sugar, and tea, the colonists had become conscious of the social implications
and political connotations of food. Although the Declaration of
Independence and the following Revolutionary War effectively ended
England s egregious political control over the American diet, remnants of
English culture still permeated the culinary landscape of America; though the
American colonies successfully achieved political independence, they still
remained culturally attached to England. Consequently, situated within this
revolutionary context, this archive endeavors to conceptualize the
changing relationship between England and America by examining the
changing culinary landscape as depicted in popular domestic guides and
cookbooks; through the juxtaposition and purposeful ordering of British
and American documents, this archive traces a second revolution.

Mooring Gaps: Marianne Moore’s Bryn Mawr Poetry is a Bryn Mawr
College senior English thesis in the form of a website. This essay
explores three of Marianne Moore’s Bryn Mawr poems. It combines
close textual analysis of the poems with an interrogation of the
possibilities of a website as a critical form. My interpretation of
Marianne Moore’s work features three different analytic structures
(one for each poem) to suggest that new media allow for multi-
presentational critiques as well as multi-vocality.
