Whiteness and Citizenship
Captain Ahab s eulogy of whiteness shows that the word white implies more than a chromatic
description. White is an untenable perfection that has haunted the American psyche since colonial
times. The idea of white spiritual superiority can only be enforce by a terrorist politico legal system,
based on brutalizing the non whites and creating a national fantasy. A national fantasy defined by
Lauren Berlant as the means to designate how national culture becomes local through the images,
narratives, monuments, and sites that circulate through personal/collective consciousness. As Captain
Ahab disregards all his craft s safety rules on his mad search of the white whale, the American politico
legal system disregarded its basic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whites were usually better off than the non whites, but some groups outside whiteness were better
than poor whites. At this point it is very important to make clear the psychological association
between white and empowered present in much of the whiteness field, an assumption that Sugrue
argues can be very deceiving.
The concept of whiteness has father a strong flow of academic work to explore whiteness, a problem
to be explained and addressed. Theodore W. Allen argues that the idea of whiteness was born in the
need for social control. In the introduction of the book, Allen claims that whiteness did not exist
before 1705, and he pinpoints the 1705 Virginia Law codifying race as the beginning of whiteness in
America. This same anti racist trend was present in Roediger s Towards the Abolition of Whiteness.
Roediger s focus upon whites and their racial identity and making whiteness, rather than simply white
racism, the focus of study ... [showing] the impact that the dominant racial identity in the US has had
... on the ways that whites think of themselves, of power, of pleasure, and of gender. Here Roediger
argues how white Irish workers had class conscious stake in whiteness as means of escape from the
worst jobs associated with non white workers. Irish assimilation into American society was facilitated
by their stress upon whiteness, and how they accepted white consciousness and ideology in a process
of becoming white. The process placed greater

Judith Butler The Values Of Efficiency Summary
In Judith Butler s article The Values of Difficulty , in which she wrote in response to Denis Dutton s
article Language Crimes: A Lesson in How Not to Write, Courtesy of the Professoriate , she argues
that complex ideas require complex language to develop societal change and challenge common
sense. Butler shows how difficult language us useful, but I disagree with her overall claim. I do not
think that intricate wording is needed for a logical point to be made. Judith Butler wrote this article to
argue against the belief that scholarly writing is overcomplicated just to boast intelligence. Butler
begins by explaining how scholars, whose work topics focus on he humanities, are accused of bad
writing by the journal Philosophy and Literature. She believes that intellectuals in such fields should
explain how their work interplays in everyday life, but that these intellectuals should also create new
ways of looking at the world. A more socially just world would be possible if common sense were to
be challenged. Butler s definition of common sense is different than traditionally thought of. While
common sense may be defined as having good judgment in practical matters to most, she seems to
define it as an old way of thinking, stating that, Many quite nefarious ideologies pass for common
sense. For decades of American history, it was common sense in some quarters for white people to
own slaves and for women not to vote. (p.147) She thinks that for society to improve,

Critical analysis of the implication of overreaction to the return predictability in UK stock market
Over the past decades, overreaction has drawn attention from many economic researchers, the most
significant studies being Jegadeesh and Titman, (1993), De Bondt and Thaler (1985) proving the
existence of overreaction. In their framework, they violated the EMH assumption. Then many later
studies examined the overreaction effect through different market anomalies with One of the
important anomalies being arbitrage trading strategies.
This paper will follow the Jegadeesh and Titman, (1993) framework and the Hons and Tonks (2002)
method to construct a momentum strategy for UK market with winner and loser portfolio. The aim of

Erysiples Case Study
What is the most likely diagnosis of the mouth lesions?
The most likely diagnosis is a cold sore, most commonly called the herpes simplex type 1 virus (HSV
1). Everyone has the virus in them and it will present in times of stress, sun exposure, or a weakened
immune system. The doctor will take a sample of the fluid from the vesicles if Don s history warrants
it.
Mode of transmission and is this a bacteria and a virus.
HSV 1 is a virus transmitted by direct physical contact like kissing, sharing food or utensils. It can
also be transmitted by oral sex if your partner has the virus.

1. Protection An oily layer helps to keep out bacteria and viruses, the strength of the keratin provides a
measure of defense from outside mechanical sources (like if you hit your arm if it is a light tap, you
will only get a bruise). Your skin keeps out harmful radiation from the sun (ultraviolet rays), and
retains moisture so we don t dehydrate.
2. Regulation Insulates the body to maintain temperature to achieve homeostasis. Sweat glands,
vasoconstriction, and vasodilation are how this is achieved. Your skin also provides cushioning for
your internal organs. Imagine our skin is a blown up balloon...gentle pressure can be used to indent it
but as soon as you release pressure, it pops right back out.
3. Sensation Tells us where it hurts. The pain receptors send signals to the brain saying stop that it
hurts . Remember when you were a child and you touched the hot burner on the stove? Your skin told
you it was too hot and your autonomic reaction was to pull your hand away quickly.
4. Endocrine function Aids in the absorption of Vitamin D3 through the stratum basale and the stratum

Brief History Of Computers Essay
The history of computers is a long and fascinating one. The computer was initially born out of
necessity, not just for entertainment, which is more or less how much people utilize computers these
days. In fact, computers were born out of a need to solve a serious number crunching crisis. By 1880,
the U.S. population had grown so large that it took more than seven years to tabulate the U.S. Census
results. The government sought a faster way to get the job done, giving rise to punch card based
computers that took up entire rooms. (Zimmermann) Today, we carry more computing power on our
smartphones than was available in these early models. The following brief history of computing is a
timeline of how computers evolved from their humble beginnings to the machines of today that surf
the Internet, play games and stream multimedia in addition to crunching numbers. (Zimmermann)
1801: In France, Joseph Marie Jacquard invents a loom that uses punched wooden cards to
automatically weave fabric designs. Early computers would use similar punch cards. 1822: English
mathematician Charles Babbage conceives of a steam driven calculating machine that would be able
to compute tables of numbers. The project, funded by the English government, is a failure. More than
a century later, however, the world s first computer was actually built. 1890: Herman Hollerith designs
a punch card system to calculate the 1880 census, accomplishing the task in just three years and
saving the government $5

Essay about Prime Minister vs. Usa President
Many people would like to believe that the president is the most powerful person in the world.
However, the structure of America has put restraints on the president that a Prime Minister would not
have. There are many differences between the President of the United States and the Prime Minister of
Canada. These differences include regulations, term of office, powers, and cultures. Throughout this
paper you will learn that just being the leader of their country is about as similar as these two people
get.
Here in the United States, we have had many presidents throughout the years. Starting with George
Washington, and finishing up with George Bush. Our president is the chief executive, with the
legislative and judicial branches to keep ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A president has a limit of time in office, and can serve up to two terms, four years at a time. I believe
like this is a good and bad thing. While it gives our president time to make good decisions, and time to
actually change things in our country, if the president has bad ratings, there is nothing we can do about
it until his term is up. There is only one circumstance when a president can be voted out of office
before his term is up, and that is called impeachment. This can happen when the president has
committed acts treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors, thus giving the power to the
house of representatives to impeach him, and the senate the power to remove him for office, given a
two thirds vote to convict. This rarely happens though, and throughout history only two presidents
have ever been impeached; Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1998
(http://biden.senate.gov). In Canada, the Prime Minister s terms of office are determined much
differently. The prime minister is appointed by the Governor General on behalf of the queen. The
governor general will typically pick the leader of the party that has the most seats in the house to
maintain stability in the government. Unlike the president, the prime minister does not have a fixed
term of office. Canada s constitution, The Constitution of Canada, limits each parliament member to
five years, and then a general

The Mapping Of Ip Addresses
ABSTRACT: The mapping of IP addresses to host names is a major problem in rapidly growing
internet. The higher level binding effort went on increasing to different level of development up to the
currently used Domain Name System. DNS, being an open source, it is less secured and it has no
means of determining whether domain name data comes from an authorized domain owner. So these
vulnerabilities lead to a number of attacks. Hence, there is a need of securing DNS. Using Advanced
Encryption Standards, it performs normal encryption. By reversing this encryption, decryption is also
performed. Domain Name System has number of workgroups and these workgroups are connected to

A mirror, a simple reflective surface, gives us a clear image of our physical self. An image we may not

only our appearance, but individually study ourselves from the inside. Fleeting shadows of panic fill
our minds, where we wonder what we mean to the world around us. Does my true self present itself as
this person staring back at me? Have I done enough in life? Will I always regret every decision? Have

Diel-Alder Reaction Lab
Introduction: The Diel Alder reaction is a concerted cycloaddition between a diene and a dienophile.
The first people to investigate this were Otto Diels and Kurt Alder, they were able to reported large
variety of the dienes which turned out to be useful and so the procedure was named after them. This
method is an efficient way to build rings that are stereospecific. A Diel Alder reaction involves cyclic
rearrangement of bonding electrons and forming and breaking bond(s) simultaneously. The reaction
happens with in a single transition state. It has the smallest volume of all the other starting materials

1984 Context Essay
1984 context
For after all, how do we know that two and two make four? Or that the force of gravity works? If both
the past and the external world exist only in the mind, and if the mind itself is controllable, what then?
Have you ever imagined a world where the truth is the darkness of lies?
Context helps to create connotation and understanding. 1984 is a dystopian novel by British writer
George Orwell, published in 1949. It is one of the most recognised political ideology books ever
written. Written post World War II, the context of the story is heavily influenced by the experience of
the author. The novel was written as a warning of what a world under totalitarianism may look like. In
the novel, Orwell uses the character Winston Smith ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was published a few years after the Spanish Civil War and just after World War II. People were
questioning their personal freedoms and the accountability of their governments. Countries such as
Spain and the Soviet Union were still under the political ideology of totalitarianism, under which the
country was more important than individuality. In the novel, the thought police character of O Brien
mentions to Winston The German Nazis and the Russian Communists came very close to use in their
methods of controlling their nation. This demonstrates how 1984 was a representation of how
countries ran their nations at that time. Personal freedom in those countries had been limited; society
was geared towards the success of the nation rather than individual rights. As a reflection of this, in
1984, Orwell paralleled the way these ideologies followed their leaders by having his fictitious society
follow Big Brother. Moreover, propaganda was used a lot during the war to influence thinking. Lots of
advertisements were used by Hitler, enforcing his people that he is moving Germany forward into the
great future. This is also seen in 1984 as, wherever you go, there are posters stating: Big Brother is
watching you. The use of propaganda scares society into obedience as they do not want to commit

Argumentative Essay On Digital Natives
In today s high demand for the latest and most advanced technology, our world is becoming more and
more digitally native. With the youth growing up in a world being native and surrounded by
technology, they are being impacted having reference to the name digital natives. It is a controversial
debate regarding the negative and positive impacts of growing up being a digital native and there are
many viewpoints on the expectations for both digital natives and digital immigrants. Are these terms
entirely accurate? Danah Boyd s book, Are Today s Youth Digital Natives? descriptively covers the ins
and outs of the term digital natives and how this generation is being affected by technology. In this
essay, I will converse between the work of Boyd on her opinion and research on digital natives and
compare it to Marc Prensky, author of Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants as mentioned in her text,
and author Alexandra Samuel of Forget digital natives. Here s how kids are really using the internet.
The term digital native refers to people born in the digital era, in other words, people born in

Essay on Gloria Naylor s Mama Day
Gloria Naylor s Mama Day
It is impossible to interpret Gloria Naylor s 1988 novel, Mama Day, in one way. There are multiple
standpoints that a reader can take in explaining various events that occur throughout the book, as well
as different ways that the characters in the book interpret these events. The author never fully clarifies
many questions that the story generates so as to leave the readers with the opportunity to answer them
based on their own personal experiences and beliefs. The multiplicity of perspectives in Gloria Naylor
s Mama Day is embodied in the legend of Sapphira Wade and the dynamics between logic and the
supernatural and between George and Cocoa.

The descendents of Sapphira all received deeds to pieces of land in Willow Springs in 1823. How the
descendants of a slave woman came to inherit the land of slave owner is unclear because different
interpretations of the event that occurred in 1823 seem to have been developed from generation to
generation. For instance, some say Sapphira smothered Bascombe Wade in his very bed, while others
say she persuaded Bascombe Wade in a thousand days to deed all his slaves every inch of land in
Willow Springs and poisoned him for his trouble (Naylor 3). These different interpretations apparently
lead to the development to the use of the phrase 18 23 as a slang term. For some, the phrase seems to
represent death and destruction whereas others use it synonymously with deception. But no matter
what actually happened in 1823, the fact that so many views are accepted by the community conveys
to the reader the importance of open mindedness in reading the book. Naylor continues to suggest the
significance of open mindedness by providing the reader with the opportunity to choose more than one
way to explain Mama Day s encounter with Bernice. Bernice decides to seek the advice of Mama Day,
who is known to have miraculous healing abilities, when she has trouble conceiving. Mama Day gives
Bernice pumpkin seeds and puts her under the impression that they are magic seeds (Naylor 96). This

Imagery In Edith Wharton s Rattray
In 1902, Edith Wharton wrote, There are two ways of spreading light; to be / The candle or the mirror
that reflects it (qtd. in Rattray xx). The image of light commonly evokes connotations of good, truth,
hope, life, and purity. Wharton s statement expresses that while few individuals have the ability to
create such qualities in the lives of others, many people have the ability to spread another s light, and
thereby everyone has an equal ability to spread light. The statement, however, also elicits another
notion: oftentimes, the reflection of light creates a dispersal and refraction, analogous to how the
individual perception and interpretation of any idea alters its original meaning by way of a biased
refraction . Similarly, in Wharton s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through her use of light versus imagery specifically, Wharton demonstrates that society requires a
person to have a great amount of wealth relative to their social class, but also illustrates that detriment
to true happiness occurs in response to overwhelming dependence on and a large excess of money.
During an upper class party in The Age of Innocence, couples were already gliding over the floor
beyond: the light of the wax candles fell on revolving tulle skirts, on girlish heads wreathed with
modest blossoms, on the dashing aigrettes and ornaments of the young married women s coiffures
(21). Wharton depicts the luxury of the party goers clothing shown by the light of the wax candles to
demonstrate the absolute importance of spending inordinate sums of money on lavish clothes and
ornaments in order to associate with this tier of people. If not accepted by a high class social circle,
society relegates one only to interact with those of a much lower class and standard of living. Indeed,
Lily Bart, the protagonist in The House of Mirth, does not have access to quite enough money to stay
within this higher social circle of people, but she knew that she hated dinginess as much as her mother
had hated it, and to her last breath she meant to fight against it, dragging herself up again and again
above its flood till she gained the bright pinnacles of success which presented such a slippery surface
to her clutch (42). Wharton, by using dark imagery to portray Lily s perception of the lower class as
having nothing but dinginess, implies that that Lily believes the lower class inferior and their living
conditions intolerable. In addition, her willingness to

The Biggest Slippery Slope-Personal Narrative
I was running down the field against Inter Lakes biggest rival Moultonborough. As the ball floats
through the air heading towards the goalie I know I can reach, but I knew it would be close. As I
approached the now rolling ball, I realize that the goalie would make it just before me. Desperate for a

in me getting the slightest of touch on the ball that it slips past the goalie. I now realized that I had a

Creating A Better Recognition System
ABSTRACT
Bangla word recognition is extremely challenging and there are too few works reported on online
cursive Bangla word recognition. Bangla is a complicated script and it needs rigorous investigations to
implement a better recognition system. While we have sophisticated classifiers like Hidden Markov
Models or BLSTM Neural Networks for recognition of complicated scripts, we have very little
comparative studies about the appropriate feature sets for such scripts. In this paper, our aim is to
implement an appropriate recognition system for author independent unconstrained Bangla word
where a modified feature set is proposed. To construct the modified feature set, we modify existing
feature sets and add new features for improvement of recognition accuracy. We test performances of

The Good Shepherd Village ( Gsv )
The Good Shepherd Village (GSV) located on 300 acres in a semi rural community within easy
driving distance of Philadelphia had history of more than 20 years. In the facility, GSV has 570
independent living units 120 licensed nursing card beds, 30 assisted living beds and 20 studio units.
The management team at GSV is very conservative, they nervous to make changes or adapt to some
new ideas.
Key players
The key player in the case is Pat Evans, became Director of Health Services for six months at GSV,
and he noticed two main issues at GSV, 1) most of the decisions for levels of care are economic
driven; 2) weak correlation between each department.
Therefore, he promotes his idea about integrated delivery system to the board, and he forms a group
called The Geriatric assessment and Care Planning Team which gather medical, rehabilitation, social
services, nursing staffs to work together on resident health assessment. But his plan bristled with
difficulties.
Some other key players are Reverend Kathleen Mueller, the chair of board, she strong supports the
plan; Dr. Alexis Schmidt who is Medical Director, he deeply disagrees Pat s idea about integrated
delivery systems; Bill Wagner, executive director, Dr. Schmidt and she make the final decision to
determine the residents level of care, and she has concern of pat s plan as well. And there are also
some minor players like, Louise Richards, chief physical therapist; Maggie Newman, Director of
nursing.

The Factors That Made Survival Possible For Salva In A...

What factors made survival possible for Salva in A Long Walk to Water
Salva the main character of A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park was an 11 year old boy when his
village was attacked. His teacher urged him to run away from the village and to run to the bush. After
that attack, his life made a turn for the worse. With no family around him, he was completely lost.

Therefore the first survival factor for Salva was the thoughts of seeing his family again. The second
survival factor that made survival possible for Salva was Uncle Jewiir s advice. Not only was his
advice a survival factor, but he himself was a survival factor. While Salva was crossing the desert in
chapter 7 he found himself losing hope. But Uncle Jewiir didn t let that happen. He made sure to stay
by Salva s side when he needed somebody for comfort and he gave advice. According to chapter 7
(page 41), it states that If it hadn t been Uncle, Salva might have gone crazy with fear. Uncle spoke to
him all morning in a steady, low voice. This shows us that Salva was afraid of the lions and he needed
someone to comfort him. This also shows that without Uncle Jewiir Salva would probably be long
gone. It also says in chapter 9 (page 53) that As if by magic, Uncle was suddenly at his side. Salva
Mawien Dut Ariik! he said, using Salva s full name, loud and clear. Salva lifted his head, the sobs
interrupted by surprise. Do you see that group of bushes? Uncle said, pointing. You need to only walk
as far as those bushes. Can you do that, Salva Mawien Dut Ariik? This shows us that Uncle Jewiir s
advice helped him a lot and what Uncle was trying to imply to Salva was to take a step at a time
instead of taking it all in one time. Not only did Uncle Jewiir s advice help now, but years later too. He

Asian Stereotypes In America
Beginning with the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, the first law to ever restrict immigration,
discrimination against Asian Americans has been prevalent in the United States. Although the issue
has existed for more than a century, modern Americans have expressed their hostility to the diverse
group due to the bitterness caused by the minority s wild economic successes in the 19th century and
in the 21st century. However, as society has labeled them as a group of hard working, intuitive
individuals, Asians have since surfaced as the model minority of America. By definition, the model
minority stereotype is a cultural standard with expectations that Asian American individuals will be
intellectual, excel in education, and become wealthy ( Model ... Show more content on

The typical stereotyping of Asians as exemplar intellectuals with natural skills in the fields of math,
technology, and science are many times, true, as the masses have portrayed themselves as achievers of
the American Dream ( Model Minority Stereotype ). Asians, on average, are more educated and
intellectual than any other racial group (Wingfield). As they are more likely to have white collar jobs
and even considered overrepresented in professional workplaces in the United States, it is not
surprising that Asians earn higher incomes than the average white individual (Wingfield). Thus, it is
feasible that Asians serve as a model minority for other minorities and maybe even the majority, as
many strive to have the same opportunities as them. Moreover, in the film Get Out, African Americans
are portrayed as the main minority; the protagonist, Chris, is the only black person in a white suburban
town (Truffaut Wong). However, in two scenes, an Asian man named Hiroki Tanaka participates in the
modern slave auction and ultimately accomplishes his role as the model minority (Truffaut Wong).
The man blends in with the white crowd and enforces the concept of the model minority, as he is seen
to be on the ranks of white people. Furthermore, by definition, the model minority is not offensive as
its denotation is meant to praise the group. Asians are seen to thrive economically and their
responsibility, motivation, and the success as a result are proof that American meritocracy is effective
(Wingfield). Fundamentally, Americans recognize the dedication and diligence Asians have and thus
acclaim Asians to be models for the rest of the population. Overall, the stereotyping of Asians as a
group of hard working, determined individuals expresses admiration for the

The Chenogne Massacre was a retaliation for the Malmedy Massacre, where over sixty German
prisoners near the Belgian Village of Chenogne were shot. The events on January 1st 1945 during the
Chenogne Massacre were covered up throughout time, and the perpetrators were punished. As far as
today, historians believe that the reason for this massacre was because of senior commanders giving
verbal orders to kill all prisoners. John Fague of B Company, 21st Infantry Battalion, an eyewitness
had stated Some of the boys had some prisoners line up. I knew they were going to shoot them, and I

The Dark Side of Judge Pyncheon in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s...
The Dark Side of Judge Pyncheon in Nathaniel Hawthorne s Novel, The House of the Seven Gables
People in society live in a masquerade. Everyone wears a decoratively adorned mask that displays
beauty, purity, and service. However, behind the mask lies on the inside of all society. One will stop at
nothing in order to be well liked, thus becoming hypocrites. In Nathaniel Hawthorne s novel, The
House of the Seven Gables, the narrator uses intense diction, a vivid selection of detail, and a
shocking tone to reveal that the character of Judge Pyncheon resembles perfection on the outside, yet
darker traits sit latent on the inside.

Pyncheon is always aware of his form as well as his appearance towards others like broad
benevolence, and a scrupulous attention to the rich and poor. The narrator suddenly transitions from
Judge Pyncheon s admirably arranged life to his early and reckless youth. Nathaniel Hawthorne
ultimately describes Pyncheon s looking glass image, his party mask. This hard, cold man can only be
brought down by the public loss of interest in him. The intensity of the narrator s diction makes the
Judge s contrasting inner and outer characters obvious and blatant.
A vivid selection of detail provides perfect evidence to Judge Pyncheon s unsightly hypocrisy.
Hawthorne pays close attention to Pyncheon s work life, social world, and conspicuous appearances.
At the same time, he elaborates on his wonderful involvement, his pursuing work ethic, and his superb
manner and attire towards others. However, it is not the superficial attributes that Hawthorne pays
attention to... it is the subliminal side of the Judge that he disregards. What does Judge Pyncheon do in
his leisure time when the public eye is not trampling in his world? The Judge s splendid rubbish is
only a mere reflection he wants society to witness. Because of the narrator s selection of detail, Judge
Pyncheon s secret existence soars to the surface.
A shocking and disappointing tone exposes Judge Pyncheon s active and subtle conscience.

Effectiveness Of The Rotavirus Vaccine Essay
Effectiveness of the rotavirus vaccine in New Zealand infants between 8 weeks and three years old
Abstract
Background. Rotavirus is a gastrointestinal illness characterized by vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach ache
and a fever. Children less than three years old are particularly at risk of dehydration from the sudden
vomiting and diarrhoea, which can require hospitalisation. A vaccine against rotavirus was
recommended globally by WHO in 2009, and it has recently been approved into the New Zealand
immunisation schedule. As yet there are no studies following the effectiveness of this vaccine since its
introduction using New Zealand study subjects specifically.
Methods. In this matched case control study, cases are infants between eight weeks and three years of
age who will be seen in a participating ED with rotavirus, confirmed with a positive rotavirus antigen
test, between November 2014 and November 2016 in New Zealand. For every case we will enrol 1 or
2 controls who are seen in the same ED without rotavirus and they will be matched for date of birth
(within two weeks) and date of visit to ED (within two weeks). Vaccine effectiveness will be
calculated by 1 minus the matched odds ratio, multiplied by 100 for the percentage. Aims
To measure the effectiveness of the new rotavirus vaccine against Emergency Department attendance,
or admission, for rotavirus in infants between 8 weeks and three years of age in New Zealand.
To try and measure the effectiveness of the vaccine

Illegality Of Drugs
Illegality of drugs (Legalize It All essay)
For many decades there has been a continuous debate about legalizing drugs. The ongoing debate
spotlights whether legalization would positively or negatively impact society. In the essay, Legalize It
All, Baum argues that the legalization of drugs is the best way to prevent any drug related violence
and addiction when the government regulates the drug usage and sales. I disagree with Baum s ideas
on drug legality as I believe all drugs should remain illegal. I disagree with Baum s statement drugs
should remain illegal. However, I do see strong benefits in drug regulation such as fewer children
being involved in drugs as well as reduced crime rates.
At this current time, 8:03 am, there must be at least two people doing drugs secretly out of fear of
being arrested. Others do not do drugs for fear of the exact same thing but if drugs were to be made
legal, more people would be inclined to become daily users and openly use them. Baum believes that
through legalizing drugs, a number of addictions will be limited. He explained that although about half
of all Americans older than twelve have tried an illegal drug, only 20 percent of those have used one
in the past month. (pg 25) HALF OF ALL AMERICANS have tried an illegal drug the rest are either
too scared to try an illegal drug or it goes against their ethics. If these drugs were legal, the number of
Americans to try drugs would be greater due to the decrease in price and the easy accessibility.
In Legalize It All, Baum explains that if we regulate drugs, we can prevent young children from doing
drugs and decrease the amount of addicts in the city. Through my experience, I believe that the
opposite of what Baum believes will occur. Take, for example, the regulations on cigarettes. Children
that are younger than 18 are prohibited to smoke. However, on my way to school, I see many
underaged teens smoking. This proves that regulations do not always work. Children are aware of the
negative effects of tobacco yet they continue to smoke. The same goes for drinking alcohol. If we
cannot regulate the use of cigarettes or alcohol, what is to say that the regulations on drugs will be
successful? Baum has not thought out the

Pathophysiology Of Coughing
Coughing is a symptom, a body reflex which helps rid the body of foreign materials from the lungs
and upper airway passages. It is not a disease until it is evaluated. With Khristian having a productive
cough with mucus and a high grade temperature, this shows there s is an infection in the body
systematically. A productive cough is often associated with a feeling of chest tightness in the chest.
Vomiting can mean different things; when a child coughs or has a lot of mucus drains in the stomach,
the swelling in the trachea activate the gag reflex which induces vomit.
The pathophysiology alteration that can be associated with this cough could be croup, pneumonia and
influenza. These three diagnoses are the most common diagnosis in children with similarity in clinical
presentation. The pathophysiology of croup explained that when a child has a croup, he or she wakes
up in the middle of the night with a barking cough and shortness of breath (Murray et al., 2011). It is
usually caused by a viral infection known as parainfluenza virus with type 1 3 being the most common
type. This virus affect the trachea which results in the inflammation of the windpipe making is hard to
breathe. The narrowing of the windpipe results in a tight and barky cough sound. Since it is viral
infection there is no vaccination against the disease. Clinical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Black Holes And Its Effects On Society
Supermassive black holes are so mysterious when it comes to the knowledge we know about them.
We still don t know much about them and there will always be conspiracies about them, but we still
need to find more information about them to understand more. Black holes are developed when a star
s core collapses and then mass is getting eaten by the core which leads to the star to die in a supernova
explosion. This can go two ways, one is that the star turns into a neutron star, and the second is it turns
into a black hole but only if the star is massive enough. There are known to be three kinds of black
holes. Intermediate, stellar, and supermassive black holes. We still don t know how supermassive

radioactivity by counting ionizing particles. Eight X ray sources were found and scientist detected

the first black hole to be discovered. (6) We have a lot of evidence to prove that supermassive black
holes exist in galaxies. Scientist found evidence of a supermassive black hole in the center of the
Milky Way, the galaxy NGC 4258, galaxy M87, and several more. Scientist verified the existence of
black holes by studying the speed of the clouds of gas orbiting the galaxy regions. In 1994, the Hubble
space telescope measured an unseen object that had an estimated mass of about 3 billion times the
mass of the sun in our solar system. The unseen object was located in the center of the galaxy M87.
Scientist measured the mass of the object through the motion of the object whirling around the center.
(2) More evidence for the existence of supermassive black holes is the existence of quasars. Quasars

desire to attend there. Herbert failed his first entrance exam, but Stanford allowed him another
opportunity to take the exam. He was the tender age of seventeen when he began his engineering
studies at Stanford. Stanford was not an inexpensive school; Herbert worked several entry level jobs
to afford to attend. (Chang, 18 20) Hoover was very involved in the university s student government.
He was also the treasurer of his junior class. (Fausold, 5) During his time at the university, Herbert the
met lovely Louise Henry, often called Lou. Herbert later described her as, A symbol of everything
wholesome in American life. (Chang, 41) Lou was the first woman to major in geology at Stanford.
(Chang, 20) After graduating with an A.B. degree, Herbert took a job with the mining engineer, Louis
Janin; Herbert was asked to work on projects in California, Colorado, and Nevada. A year later,
Herbert Hoover got a job with the mining firm of Bewick, Moreing, and Company of London. While
working with the firm, he was sent on a two year assignment in Australia working on gold mines.
During his time in Australia, Herbert was made a partner with this firm; he was only twenty seven.

Essay Analysis of the Gladiator Trailer
Analysis of the Gladiator Trailer
Trailers are important to films for a number of reasons. They promote a film and present it to the
target audience, in order to encourage them to watch the film. Trailers also give the audience
expectations of the film. The audience like to know what to expect of a film before they go and see it.
The audience is given a taste of the story and the basic plot. This is done by showing an array of clips
that are edited to a certain degree. The trailer normally ends with a cliff hanger . This is a term used to
explain when an audience is not told the ending of a story. This makes them wonder in suspense as to
what the possible endings could be, therefore drawing them ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

I am looking at the camera shots/angles, colours, lighting, sound, plot, target audience and genre. The
film Gladiator is an epic, action, war film with some romance and a lot of history. The opens image is
of the universal logo, an instantly recognisable big name. This is where the film was made. The
following image is of the DreamWorks logo. This is a Steven Spielberg company with a credible
reputation. This is a distribution company. A dramatic drumbeat is heard at the start of the opening
image which tells us instantly the genre of the film, an epic war film. This is because a heavy
drumbeat is a reminiscent of battle.
The first actual shot of the trailer is of the words THE GENERAL is then shown in bold whit capital
letters. I t stands out upon the black background. The words move back and eventually fade into the
background. At the beginning of this shot the music builds up, trumpets now accompany the drums.
This gives out a sense of defiance and strength. The audience associates this with war and battle. This
next shot is a mid shot of a man walking boldly with his head up high. He is walking through lines of
soldiers in big strides. He is also dressed in armour, so we assume he is the general. The general has a
stern, solemn expression he seems secure and confident. The lighting is bright but creates the sense of
an austere atmosphere and a

Gandhi Critique vs Rabindranath Tagore´s Views
Gandhi Critique: Rabindranath Tagore The term the Indian independence movement refers to the
progressive undermining of British Imperial rule in India during the late nineteenth century and early
twentieth century. Though the effort was collective in nature, being that it was popular among the
population of India, the means by which many intended to gain their freedom varied greatly. There
were many competing political approaches to this movement, but among them all, the messages of
Mohandus Karamchand Gandhi, otherwise known as Mahatma Gandhi, emerged as the most
prominent. His teachings concerning how they, the people of India, must attain Swaraj, self
governance free from foreign input where power and wealth were to be distributed more equally, were
founded under a few core principles and beliefs which stressed a multitude of subsequent practices.
With publicity comes scrutiny and Gandhi was no exception. One of Gandhi s foremost critics was his
friend Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, a Nobel Prize winning writer. Though highly controversial at the
time, the methods employed by Gandhi proved to be instrumental to the progress of this nationalist
movement. Gandhi lived his life, and encouraged others to do the same, with his philosophy of
satyagraha: observing a nonviolence of the mind, by seeking truth in a spirit of peace and love, and by
undergoing a rigorous process of self scrutiny (Britannica). Some favored radical violence, but Gandhi
remained true to his writings,

Gamma Rays Are The Most Interesting Wave Of The...
Gamma rays are the most interesting wave in the electromagnetic spectrum. In 1900, Paul Villard
discovered Gamma rays unexpectedly while he was conducting a radioactivity experiment
(ARPANSA). He differentiated gamma rays from x rays because he realized that gamma rays had a
greater penetration power depth through his further study and research (ARPANSA). Gamma
radiation studies revealed that they are very dangerous, but scientist also found a way to protect
against gamma radiation and many beneficial usages.
Gamma radiation is in the highest energy level of the electromagnetic spectrum (Electromagnetic
Spectrum). And the electromagnetic spectrum reveals the different types and range of radiation as well
as their wavelengths, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The research logically proved that if a person was farther away from the radiation, they would be
affected less by the bombing. The research clearly revealed why a high dose of gamma radiation was
dangerous because the bombs and explosions immediately killed people, and had many ways to
destroy person s health.
Unlike high dose of gamma radiation, a small dose of radiation had a significant and negative effects
on the victims in China. This study strongly proved that gamma radiation negatively affected the
health because the accidental Ir 192 gamma radiation caused a variety of cancer even with small doses
of radiation: .05 .65 Gy (Li). Iridium 192 is a radioactive isotope that has a half life of 73.82 days
which means that these radiations may occur rapidly. Also, the victims who were exposed to this
radiation had limited knowledge that certain machinery expelled the gamma radiation (Li). 54 people
were conducted on a 10 year test to check their health. The method was very simple because the
researchers gathered and then studied blood samples, bone marrow, and their T cell subsets (Li). The
results revealed basic clinical symptoms such as an increase in dizziness, fatigue, memory loss,
insomnia for 90.7 % of the people in the first month, but as time passed by, the study

White is an untenable perfection that has haunted the American psyche since colonial times. The idea of white spiritual superiority can only be enforce by a terrorist politico legal system, based on brutalizing the non whites and creating a national fantasy. A national fantasy defined by Lauren Berlant as the means to designate how national culture becomes local through the images, narratives, monuments, and sites that circulate through personal/collective consciousness. Whites were usually better off than the non whites, but some groups outside whiteness were better than poor whites. At this point it is very important to make clear the psychological association between white and empowered present in much of the whiteness field, an assumption that Sugrue argues can be very deceiving. The concept of whiteness has father a strong flow of academic work to explore whiteness, a problem to be explained and addressed. Theodore W. Allen argues that the idea of whiteness was born in the need for social control. In the introduction of the book, Allen claims that whiteness did not exist before 1705, and he pinpoints the 1705 Virginia Law codifying race as the beginning of whiteness in America. This same anti racist trend was present in Roediger s Towards the Abolition of Whiteness. • 3. Judith Butler The Values Of Efficiency Summary In Judith Butler s article The Values of Difficulty , in which she wrote in response to Denis Dutton s article Language Crimes: A Lesson in How Not to Write, Courtesy of the Professoriate , she argues that complex ideas require complex language to develop societal change and challenge common sense. Butler shows how difficult language us useful, but I disagree with her overall claim. I do not think that intricate wording is needed for a logical point to be made. Judith Butler wrote this article to argue against the belief that scholarly writing is overcomplicated just to boast intelligence. Butler begins by explaining how scholars, whose work topics focus on he humanities, are accused of bad writing by the journal Philosophy and Literature. She believes that intellectuals in such fields should explain how their work interplays in everyday life, but that these intellectuals should also create new ways of looking at the world. A more socially just world would be possible if common sense were to be challenged. Butler s definition of common sense is different than traditionally thought of. While common sense may be defined as having good judgment in practical matters to most, she seems to define it as an old way of thinking, stating that, Many quite nefarious ideologies pass for common sense. For decades of American history, it was common sense in some quarters for white people to own slaves and for women not to vote. (p.147) She thinks that for society to improve, ... • 11. Brief History Of Computers Essay The history of computers is a long and fascinating one. The computer was initially born out of necessity, not just for entertainment, which is more or less how much people utilize computers these days. In fact, computers were born out of a need to solve a serious number crunching crisis. By 1880, the U.S. population had grown so large that it took more than seven years to tabulate the U.S. Census results. The government sought a faster way to get the job done, giving rise to punch card based computers that took up entire rooms. (Zimmermann) Today, we carry more computing power on our smartphones than was available in these early models. The following brief history of computing is a timeline of how computers evolved from their humble beginnings to the machines of today that surf the Internet, play games and stream multimedia in addition to crunching numbers. (Zimmermann) 1801: In France, Joseph Marie Jacquard invents a loom that uses punched wooden cards to automatically weave fabric designs. Early computers would use similar punch cards. 1822: English mathematician Charles Babbage conceives of a steam driven calculating machine that would be able to compute tables of numbers. The project, funded by the English government, is a failure. More than a century later, however, the world s first computer was actually built. 1890: Herman Hollerith designs a punch card system to calculate the 1880 census, accomplishing the task in just three years and saving the government $5 ... • 12. Essay about Prime Minister vs. Usa President Many people would like to believe that the president is the most powerful person in the world. However, the structure of America has put restraints on the president that a Prime Minister would not have. There are many differences between the President of the United States and the Prime Minister of Canada. These differences include regulations, term of office, powers, and cultures. Throughout this paper you will learn that just being the leader of their country is about as similar as these two people get. A president has a limit of time in office, and can serve up to two terms, four years at a time. I believe like this is a good and bad thing. While it gives our president time to make good decisions, and time to actually change things in our country, if the president has bad ratings, there is nothing we can do about it until his term is up. There is only one circumstance when a president can be voted out of office before his term is up, and that is called impeachment. This can happen when the president has committed acts treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors, thus giving the power to the house of representatives to impeach him, and the senate the power to remove him for office, given a two thirds vote to convict. This rarely happens though, and throughout history only two presidents have ever been impeached; Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1998 (http://biden.senate.gov). In Canada, the Prime Minister s terms of office are determined much differently. The prime minister is appointed by the Governor General on behalf of the queen. The governor general will typically pick the leader of the party that has the most seats in the house to maintain stability in the government. Unlike the president, the prime minister does not have a fixed term of office. Canada s constitution, The Constitution of Canada, limits each parliament member to five years, and then a general ... An image we may not admire, and occasionally an image we rarely accept. Yet looking through this mirror, we perceive not only our appearance, but individually study ourselves from the inside. Fleeting shadows of panic fill our minds, where we wonder what we mean to the world around us. Does my true self present itself as this person staring back at me? Have I done enough in life? If both the past and the external world exist only in the mind, and if the mind itself is controllable, what then? Have you ever imagined a world where the truth is the darkness of lies? Context helps to create connotation and understanding. 1984 is a dystopian novel by British writer George Orwell, published in 1949. It is one of the most recognised political ideology books ever written. Written post World War II, the context of the story is heavily influenced by the experience of the author. It was published a few years after the Spanish Civil War and just after World War II. People were questioning their personal freedoms and the accountability of their governments. Countries such as Spain and the Soviet Union were still under the political ideology of totalitarianism, under which the country was more important than individuality. In the novel, the thought police character of O Brien mentions to Winston The German Nazis and the Russian Communists came very close to use in their methods of controlling their nation. This demonstrates how 1984 was a representation of how countries ran their nations at that time. Personal freedom in those countries had been limited; society was geared towards the success of the nation rather than individual rights. As a reflection of this, in 1984, Orwell paralleled the way these ideologies followed their leaders by having his fictitious society follow Big Brother. Moreover, propaganda was used a lot during the war to influence thinking. Lots of advertisements were used by Hitler, enforcing his people that he is moving Germany forward into the great future. There are multiple standpoints that a reader can take in explaining various events that occur throughout the book, as well as different ways that the characters in the book interpret these events. The author never fully clarifies many questions that the story generates so as to leave the readers with the opportunity to answer them based on their own personal experiences and beliefs. How the descendants of a slave woman came to inherit the land of slave owner is unclear because different interpretations of the event that occurred in 1823 seem to have been developed from generation to generation. For instance, some say Sapphira smothered Bascombe Wade in his very bed, while others say she persuaded Bascombe Wade in a thousand days to deed all his slaves every inch of land in Willow Springs and poisoned him for his trouble (Naylor 3). These different interpretations apparently lead to the development to the use of the phrase 18 23 as a slang term. For some, the phrase seems to represent death and destruction whereas others use it synonymously with deception. But no matter what actually happened in 1823, the fact that so many views are accepted by the community conveys to the reader the importance of open mindedness in reading the book. Naylor continues to suggest the significance of open mindedness by providing the reader with the opportunity to choose more than one way to explain Mama Day s encounter with Bernice. The image of light commonly evokes connotations of good, truth, hope, life, and purity. Wharton s statement expresses that while few individuals have the ability to create such qualities in the lives of others, many people have the ability to spread another s light, and thereby everyone has an equal ability to spread light. Through her use of light versus imagery specifically, Wharton demonstrates that society requires a person to have a great amount of wealth relative to their social class, but also illustrates that detriment to true happiness occurs in response to overwhelming dependence on and a large excess of money. During an upper class party in The Age of Innocence, couples were already gliding over the floor beyond: the light of the wax candles fell on revolving tulle skirts, on girlish heads wreathed with modest blossoms, on the dashing aigrettes and ornaments of the young married women s coiffures (21). Wharton depicts the luxury of the party goers clothing shown by the light of the wax candles to demonstrate the absolute importance of spending inordinate sums of money on lavish clothes and ornaments in order to associate with this tier of people. If not accepted by a high class social circle, society relegates one only to interact with those of a much lower class and standard of living. Indeed, Lily Bart, the protagonist in The House of Mirth, does not have access to quite enough money to stay within this higher social circle of people, but she knew that she hated dinginess as much as her mother had hated it, and to her last breath she meant to fight against it, dragging herself up again and again above its flood till she gained the bright pinnacles of success which presented such a slippery surface to her clutch (42). Bangla is a complicated script and it needs rigorous investigations to implement a better recognition system. While we have sophisticated classifiers like Hidden Markov Models or BLSTM Neural Networks for recognition of complicated scripts, we have very little comparative studies about the appropriate feature sets for such scripts. In this paper, our aim is to implement an appropriate recognition system for author independent unconstrained Bangla word where a modified feature set is proposed. To construct the modified feature set, we modify existing feature sets and add new features for improvement of recognition accuracy. We test performances of various existing feature sets and proposed feature set on same Bangla dataset for fair comparison and report the comparative results using various lexicons upto 20,000 word lexicon. As they are more likely to have white collar jobs and even considered overrepresented in professional workplaces in the United States, it is not surprising that Asians earn higher incomes than the average white individual (Wingfield). • 29. Effectiveness Of The Rotavirus Vaccine Essay Effectiveness of the rotavirus vaccine in New Zealand infants between 8 weeks and three years old Abstract Background. Rotavirus is a gastrointestinal illness characterized by vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach ache and a fever. Children less than three years old are particularly at risk of dehydration from the sudden vomiting and diarrhoea, which can require hospitalisation. A vaccine against rotavirus was recommended globally by WHO in 2009, and it has recently been approved into the New Zealand immunisation schedule. As yet there are no studies following the effectiveness of this vaccine since its introduction using New Zealand study subjects specifically. Methods. In this matched case control study, cases are infants between eight weeks and three years of age who will be seen in a participating ED with rotavirus, confirmed with a positive rotavirus antigen test, between November 2014 and November 2016 in New Zealand. For every case we will enrol 1 or 2 controls who are seen in the same ED without rotavirus and they will be matched for date of birth (within two weeks) and date of visit to ED (within two weeks). Vaccine effectiveness will be calculated by 1 minus the matched odds ratio, multiplied by 100 for the percentage. Aims To measure the effectiveness of the new rotavirus vaccine against Emergency Department attendance, or admission, for rotavirus in infants between 8 weeks and three years of age in New Zealand. To try and measure the effectiveness of the vaccine ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Illegality Of Drugs Illegality of drugs (Legalize It All essay) For many decades there has been a continuous debate about legalizing drugs. The ongoing debate spotlights whether legalization would positively or negatively impact society. In the essay, Legalize It All, Baum argues that the legalization of drugs is the best way to prevent any drug related violence and addiction when the government regulates the drug usage and sales. I disagree with Baum s ideas on drug legality as I believe all drugs should remain illegal. I disagree with Baum s statement drugs should remain illegal. However, I do see strong benefits in drug regulation such as fewer children being involved in drugs as well as reduced crime rates. At this current time, 8:03 am, there must be at least two people doing drugs secretly out of fear of being arrested. Others do not do drugs for fear of the exact same thing but if drugs were to be made legal, more people would be inclined to become daily users and openly use them. Baum believes that through legalizing drugs, a number of addictions will be limited. He explained that although about half of all Americans older than twelve have tried an illegal drug, only 20 percent of those have used one in the past month. (pg 25) HALF OF ALL AMERICANS have tried an illegal drug the rest are either too scared to try an illegal drug or it goes against their ethics. If these drugs were legal, the number of Americans to try drugs would be greater due to the decrease in price and the easy accessibility. In Legalize It All, Baum explains that if we regulate drugs, we can prevent young children from doing drugs and decrease the amount of addicts in the city. Through my experience, I believe that the opposite of what Baum believes will occur. Take, for example, the regulations on cigarettes. Children that are younger than 18 are prohibited to smoke. However, on my way to school, I see many underaged teens smoking. This proves that regulations do not always work. Children are aware of the negative effects of tobacco yet they continue to smoke. The same goes for drinking alcohol. If we cannot regulate the use of cigarettes or alcohol, what is to say that the regulations on drugs will be successful? Baum has not thought out the ... It is not a disease until it is evaluated. With Khristian having a productive cough with mucus and a high grade temperature, this shows there s is an infection in the body systematically. A productive cough is often associated with a feeling of chest tightness in the chest. Vomiting can mean different things; when a child coughs or has a lot of mucus drains in the stomach, the swelling in the trachea activate the gag reflex which induces vomit. The pathophysiology alteration that can be associated with this cough could be croup, pneumonia and influenza. These three diagnoses are the most common diagnosis in children with similarity in clinical presentation. The pathophysiology of croup explained that when a child has a croup, he or she wakes up in the middle of the night with a barking cough and shortness of breath (Murray et al., 2011). It is usually caused by a viral infection known as parainfluenza virus with type 1 3 being the most common type. We still don t know much about them and there will always be conspiracies about them, but we still need to find more information about them to understand more. Black holes are developed when a star s core collapses and then mass is getting eaten by the core which leads to the star to die in a supernova explosion. This can go two ways, one is that the star turns into a neutron star, and the second is it turns into a black hole but only if the star is massive enough. (6) We have a lot of evidence to prove that supermassive black holes exist in galaxies. Scientist found evidence of a supermassive black hole in the center of the Milky Way, the galaxy NGC 4258, galaxy M87, and several more. Scientist verified the existence of black holes by studying the speed of the clouds of gas orbiting the galaxy regions. In 1994, the Hubble space telescope measured an unseen object that had an estimated mass of about 3 billion times the mass of the sun in our solar system. The unseen object was located in the center of the galaxy M87. Scientist measured the mass of the object through the motion of the object whirling around the center. Gandhi Critique vs Rabindranath Tagore´s Views Gandhi Critique: Rabindranath Tagore The term the Indian independence movement refers to the progressive undermining of British Imperial rule in India during the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. Though the effort was collective in nature, being that it was popular among the population of India, the means by which many intended to gain their freedom varied greatly. There were many competing political approaches to this movement, but among them all, the messages of Mohandus Karamchand Gandhi, otherwise known as Mahatma Gandhi, emerged as the most prominent. His teachings concerning how they, the people of India, must attain Swaraj, self governance free from foreign input where power and wealth were to be distributed more equally, were founded under a few core principles and beliefs which stressed a multitude of subsequent practices. With publicity comes scrutiny and Gandhi was no exception. One of Gandhi s foremost critics was his friend Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, a Nobel Prize winning writer. Though highly controversial at the time, the methods employed by Gandhi proved to be instrumental to the progress of this nationalist movement. Gandhi lived his life, and encouraged others to do the same, with his philosophy of satyagraha: observing a nonviolence of the mind, by seeking truth in a spirit of peace and love, and by undergoing a rigorous process of self scrutiny (Britannica).
