This document discusses a monitoring system for preventing Desert Locust outbreaks in West Africa. The system is meant to track the monitoring activities of national locust units and help coordinate regional response. It uses a simple web-based interface to allow national units to submit surveillance data and for officials to access updates. However, the long-term sustainability of the system depends on national units consistently providing updates, as interest in locust monitoring often wanes between outbreaks when the problem is not immediate.
The UN FAO Senior Locust Forecasting Officer, Keith Cressman, gave a 30-minute keynote presentation on Desert Locust management at the 24th International Congress of Entomology (ICE2012), Daegu, South Korea (19-25 August 2012). An overview of Desert Locust biology and population dynamics, economics and FAO's early warning system are presented.

Detected for the first time in West Africa at the beginning of 2016, the fall armyworm mainly attacks maize but it can also attack rice and sorghum, as well as cotton and some vegetables. This joint presentation highlights the nature and extent of the problem and showcases some ongoing interventions to tackle the threat.
Tools for Outbreak Epidemiology: Presentation prepared for the 2nd international conference on Global Health Applications of Handheld Computing Devices in Atlanta, Georgia, USA on Nov 24-25, 2008
Disease outbreak detection, monitoring and notification systems are increasingly gaining popularity since
these systems are designed to assess threats to public health and disease outbreaks are becoming
increasingly common world-wide. A variety of systems are in use around the world, with coverage of
national, international and global disease outbreaks. These systems use different taxonomies and
classifications for the detection and prioritization of potential disease outbreaks. In this paper, we study
and analyze the current disease outbreak systems. Subsequently, we extract features and functions of
typical and generic disease outbreak systems. We then propose a generic model for disease outbreak
notification systems. Our effort is directed towards standardizing the design process for typical disease
outbreak systems.
The process of engendering the Conflict Early Warning and Response Mechanism (CEWARN) of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) began already during the process of developing the methodology for CEWARN (for a summary of important dates see Appendix I). Shortly before CEWARN was ratified by its member-states and signed into protocol in January 2002, IGAD held a workshop on Placing Gender in the Mainstream: IGAD Police Seminar on Peace Building and Conflict Resolution in Khartoum, Sudan (15-16 Oct 2001).

34. Critical point ? The sustainability of this monitoring system could be demolished by the vicious circle of locust control copied on the invasion cycles but result of the human behavior Data updates Without frequent updates, the system will never be operational. We must evaluate and monitor the effectiveness of the updates during the implementation of the application Oblivion / Interests
