This document describes a study that compares ultrasound measurements of intima-media thickness (IMT) in the left and right common carotid arteries. The study analyzed ultrasound images of 1104 subjects and found that (1) there was no significant difference between IMT measurements on the left and right sides for healthy subjects, (2) IMT measurements were significantly higher for subjects with cardiovascular disease on both sides, and (3) IMT increased with age for both healthy and diseased groups. An automated system was developed and achieved comparable IMT measurements to manual delineation. The system achieved 64% accuracy in distinguishing healthy from diseased subjects using IMT from both carotid arteries.
