Discursive Practices and Gendered Reflections of Its Use
Introduction
The following theoretical framework is divided in five sections. The first one deals with the
background to the study where a classification of research studies is done in terms of the way that
language and discourse have been researched. The second part reflects the issue of gender in
applied linguistics. The third tackles some key conceptualizations of literacy in terms of the research
study. The fourth aims to explain how writing is undertaken to fulfill a brief description of the basis
that underlies the study. Within it, it is explained the write to learn perspective that is the scope of
the investigation.
Background to the study
Bucholtz (2003) asserts that discourse is language in context. Discourse enables establishing the
existing relationship between language and gender within a given context. Then, discourse becomes
the materialization of such a relationship. That is why discourse analysis has become one of the
most outstanding methodologies to unravel gender issues within the EFL classroom.
The foci of these studies have been the way the discursive practices are used and what gendered
reflections this use shows. Some of these studies stress discourse as an anthropological tradition
(Bucholtz, 2003). This point of view highlights how language is used in the cultural practices of the
human beings. It also cares for the existing differences between men and women; but most
importantly the closed relationship between culture and language use Explain

Culture Awareness In Nigeria
Culture is defined as the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious,
or social group. according to Merriam Webster (2017). What does this mean to the average
individual? When surrounded by various cultures, as humans, we sometimes have tough decisions
to make. You can develop new relationships, or avoid another due to one s culture. The world is a
very intriguing place because no matter where you go, no country, state or city will be exactly the
same. It is always interesting to compare countries to America to realize how different our culture
compares to others. For example, Nigeria(when compared to the United States) is a very different
place which could be a vast culture shock to someone who is not familiar with that specific
culture or society. Nigeria is relatively small but has a population which surpasses Russia. This
being said, in Nigeria the average age is only 17.9 years old where the United States and Russia
have an average age of 38 years old. Understanding culture awareness and its effect on the way
humans live can make one very successful when they find themselves in a foreign environment.
Nigeria is small in relation to the United States of America while still being the 32nd largest
nation in the world. Despite its size Nigeria has a population of 190,632,261, according to The
World Factbook (2017), which is the seventh largest in the world. The President of Nigeria is

The Movie Wit
I found this movie interesting because I agree with what the film implied on how the universal
constant about being a patient is vulnerability and loss of control. In the movie Wit, you get to see
another side of the medical profession that shows disregard for medical humanities. The film tells
the story of an intellectual, Vivian Bearing, being diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer, the
treatment, and how she is stripped of her personal and professional status in the name of being a
patient. A major theme of this filmis its portrayal of the human condition in a state of dependency
and need by chronicling Vivian s experimental treatment through first person narrative, the film
allows the viewers a peek into the world of a patient suffering... Show more content on

But I flatter myself. The article will not be about me, it will be about my ovaries. With Vivian
becoming more fearful of the treatment and her future, Susie discusses what end of life options
are available. Decisions about the nature of end of life can influence the research objectives; to
revive the patient would lengthen their life and allow the trial to continue. The film ended with
Jason finding out that Vivian has died. He immediately calls the resuscitation team and tries
reviving her because he still sees her has a potential research subject, despite Vivian s decision to
have the do not resuscitate . As I reflect on what I ve seen in this movie, I can say that, being a
medical doctor is not all about the knowledge of every disease, or the making of a miracle drug.
A doctor should see from different perspectives to truly understand their patients. This film taught
me that saving lives is not merely preventing their hearts from stopping but letting them acquire
the quality of life they need and deserve. As a nursing major, I will keep in mind the moral
lessons of this film and will use it as a foundation to treat my future patients, and as to how I want
to be treated by my doctors, especially with respect, empathy, and

Essay On 1960s Religion
The 1960s was a rapid, evolutionary new burst in religious change. People during this era ignored
their parents and grandparents values, and made their own. This caused a dramatic decrease in
churchgoing numbers, and christian values in the south. These changes can be connected with the
direction the world was going. Politics, mobility, and great leadership had a huge impact on the
religionof the 1960s. After this period, Christians still, even today, try to return the values of
traditionalism (Matthews).
The politics of the time brought great change, president John F. Kennedy, was the first Catholic
president of the United states. The mobility of the times brought new ideas to the American south,
and denounced protestant thought. The immigration of 1965 opened the U.S. up to massive
immigration. Many immigrants from all over Asia came to America during this time bringing their
ancient religions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I have never been a believer of fundamental values and interpreting the bible literally. However,
religion is so deeply stained into the fabric of the south, I can not imagine a south without the
strong influence of religion it has. It is amusing to me, that we can not agree on one united
church. We are so different in our faiths, everywhere you look here has a church with its own
unique faiths. I do not know why, but I feel like religion gave the southern people a sense of
righteousness during the 1960s. I feel like the southern people knew their God would have wanted
them separate from blacks, and try to block out the rest of worlds changes from changing the South.
We try to instill these religious values in our culture I think to try and keep morals and values alive.
Except, humans do not need religion to know the difference between right or wrong. Without the
reevaluation of southern identity during the 1960s, the reevaluation may have not turned out the

Catch 22 Satire
For hundreds of years, human society and behavior has been a subject of strong criticism. No
society is flawless, and humans definitely aren t, so both are targeted with great scrutiny. These
issues were magnified during World War I, which caused millions of deaths through war and
genocide. After WWII, a new genre of literature began to materialize. The Postmodern genre was
a new and vastly different route to fiction. The great death and suffering of WWII caused many to
focus their writings more on the killing and power hungry desires of the society we live in, and
thus gave birth to the genre. Most works of postmodern literature were written to criticize the darker
and controversial issues of society and human behavior through satire and... Show more content on

In Slaughterhouse Five especially, it is undoubtedly obvious when Vonnegut is employing
satire. However, in American Psycho, Ellis employs satire throughout the whole novel, but it
wasn t nearly as clear. The contents of the novel are so horrible and so despicable, that many
may not realize that they are, in fact, satirical. Some satire is obvious, especially when
employing sarcasm or irony, like when Bateman says: the total is $475, much less than
expected. (Ellis, 51) and meeting with my lawyer about some bogus rape charge: (Ellis, 200),
but other instances of satire, specifically the moments of sheer inhumane acts, are so shocking
that many perceive them differently. They may miss that the purpose of Patrick Bateman being
so despicable is to satirically criticize social classes, gender roles, discrimination, and ignorance.
One of the issues with satire is because it s so humorous, some interpret it to be disrespectful or
not suited for literature. In the critical essay So it goes by Thomas Meaney, the issue of such
excessive use of satire is brought to light. Vonnegut deprecates any attempt to see tragedy that day
in Dresden (Meaney) Some are offended by heavy use of satire, sarcasm, and irony. Although these
techniques are effective, they can cause negative reactions from certain readers, and are therefore
risky. No matter the risk, Postmodern authors rely heavily on satire to convey their ideas and

Physical Abuse Essay
Life is complex and there is still an abundance of knowledge we have yet to gather about it. We
know where it originated and what has evolved from it. From the knowledge we gather about
the world around us, we can develop a sense of self and who we are as a person. As soon as we
know who we are, we then begin to acknowledge that there are people around us that we relate
closely to by blood or by choice; family. Our family can be the people we eat with around the
dinner table or the people who remain by our side through the hardships and the good times. The
feelings we encompass for these people around us may be everlasting love, but it can also be
animosity. We can appreciate these people and all they do for us, or despise their every being. As
a result of the hatred we may embody toward someone, we may act out. Maybe by using verbal
abuse, and maybe with physical abuse. Some of the best ways to help children cope with the mental
and physical abuse from their childhood would be to encourage them to discuss the events and
assure them it was not their fault, recognize the self destructive ways they act out as a result and
provide support, and inspire them to get more involved in their school and community, all of which
will contribute to them moving past their trauma and easing back into reality and a better future.
Encouraging children to discuss abusive events and assure them it was not their fault can help them
cope. It was not until months after I met my best friend that

Mental Health In John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men
The definition of a stigma is, a mark of disgrace associated with a particular circumstance,
quality, or person (Oxford Dictionary). In John Steinbeck s Of Mice and Men, Lennie and
Crooks worked very hard at the farm both physically and mentally. Both men are forced to live
partial lives, due to others diminishing their life worth. Lennie and Crooks, both have to deal
with the lives they were born with. Stigmas oppress people in different ways and are present in
many other countries; a person that holds a stigma must overcome many forms of derision. Mental
Health has had a large stigma from the beginning, many of these come from ignorance. The
stigma, myths and misconceptions surrounding mental illness contribute to much of the
discrimination and human rights violations experienced by people with mental disorders (Ndetei
et al., 2007a). (Ngui 1). Many people just do not understand what it is to have a mental illness;
they only know what they hear from others, even that many are far from what it actually is. Both

Pavers Essay
If we say pavers , and you think of bricks, you are in for a surprise. Pavers are a huge part of our
hardscapes, and there are enough different types to warrant a whole page.
NATURAL STONE PAVERS: These may be limestone, flagstone, or shale. For more exquisite
tastes, consider marble, travertine, or granite.
CULTURED STONE PAVERS: If you desire the look of expensive stone but would rather avoid
the price tag, or simply don t want to have the weight of the real stone to deal with, consider using
cultured pavers. These manufactured replicas are just as durable, lighter, and less expensive.
Choices then break into the following groupings. Some categories consist of natural and cultured
options, while others, such as the permeable varieties, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While some of these are in overlapping categories, such as grass pavers or interlocking concrete,
that isn t necessarily true for all of them.
INTERLOCKING CONCRETE PAVERS: This style is another permeable paver, and they lock
together for a good, tight fit. These make beautiful patios, walkways, and driveways. Some are
standard shaped, but others are special shapes which interlock in beautiful patterns. The standout,
defining feature of these pavers is that they give a solid appearance. The materials, however, allow
water to seep through. This advantage is not found with all types of pavers, and sometimes this is
the reason to opt for this type of paver.
BRICK PAVERS: These kiln fired blocks are one of the most common types of building materials
,
and there are millions of homes around the country with bricks in the patio or walkway. They are
durable.
GRASS PAVERS: These pavers are an amazing technological feat. The purpose of these pavers is
to manage the rainwater, and allow it to move back into the ground while keeping the ground
stable and solid. They are beautiful as well, and can almost be an art form of their own. The
geometric shapes can be complex, or quite simple, but all are a beautiful way to enhance your
grounds while allowing a green space. These are wonderful for people who may have smaller
yards. If you have challenges with standing water or run off, these may be a great option. Consider

Wild Hog Program Case Study
I.INTRODUCTION
The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency s Wild Hog Program is leading transformational change
across the country. Most states dealing with wild hogs and the damage they cause are hopeless.
Their hopelessness is due to wild hogs being such prolific breeders and regulatory environments in
states don t allow for successful control or elimination of this exotic and destructive species.
Thankfully, Tennesseeis an exception and TWRA s management of this species is being used as a
model by other states to base their management on. Thus, there is now newfound hope of
controlling these problems in most of the United States.
In response to criticism of TWRA s Wild Hog Program, the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury

Outreach/education has been a priority, but these efforts continue to come up short at times and, as
a result, TWRA continues to face criticism from some of its constituents. Managing the WHEAT

everyone informed, engaged and supportive. Likewise, enforcement of illegal transportation and
translocation of wild hogs is a continued challenge. This type of enforcement is very difficult even
with the best supporting laws and regulations.
Other challenges threaten the integrity of TWRA s Wild Hog Program. The popularity of the
sport of wild hog hunting is growing in the U.S and these activities threaten TWRA s wild hog
control strategies. Potential legislative comprises also pose a threat. For example, wild hog buying
stations could seriously erode the success of this program if allowed in Tennessee. Finally, greater
enforcement challenges relating to other wildlife species have resulted from the creation of TWRA
s new wild hog control regulations.
Potential improvements
The following are potential improvements for TWRA s Wild Hog Program:
TWRA could be delegated the authority to regulate the transportation of wild appearing swine;
allowing it to better enforce related illegal activity.

The design project was about a desalination process making use of superheated steam from the
solar system as electricity and using waste heat in the heat exchangers to produce pure water
which can be used for domestic activities. Basic data was provided and some assumptions were
made to aid the mass and energy balance.
After the mass and energy balance was completed and the flow rates and salt content for all streams
obtained, the heat duty required by each heat exchanger was also estimated from the values obtained
in the mass and energy balance and also using the specific heats required. The heat transfer area of
the heat exchangers were calculated as well based on the heat duty, heat transfer coefficient of each

The Black Panther Party
The Black Panthers
The Black Panther Party is a self defense, African American revolutionary party. This party was
founded in Oakland, California by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale during the 1960 s. This party
was dedicated to combating white oppression, and did so by the use of both peaceful and violent
actions. Looking back at the history of the Black Panthers, it can be clearly seen that the peaceful
idea of equality for all spawned this group and their violent actions for the main reason that they
were willing to do anything to defend their beliefs.
One of the greatest reasons for the violent actions of the party, should be credited to the co
founder named Huey Newton. Huey Newton was a rebellious individual who was suspected of
committing many crimes. As minister of defense within the party, Huey was seen as a leader to
the members of the organization. In an interview with Newton, he made clear what he wanted the
party to stand for, and what they needed to do to achieve this. In an excerpt from the interview
transcript, he says that there are two kinds of nationalism, revolutionary and reactionary
nationalism. Revolutionary nationalism is first dependent upon a People s revolution with the end
goal being the people in power... If you are a reactionary nationalist you are not a socialist and
your end goal is the oppression of the people. (Newton 1). From this transcript, it can be inferred
what kind of nationalism Huey wants the party to follow. He wants the people to gain power
through the use of violence And extremism. As the interview continues, Huey states the views of
the Black Panther Party by saying The Black Panther Party, which is a revolutionary group of
black people, realizes that we have an identity. We have to realize our black heritage in order to
give us strength to move on and progress (Newton 1). By saying this, Huey is announcing to the
world that the Black Panthers are going to cause a dramatic change, and implies that they will do
whatever is necessary as long as they have the strength. The cause for violence from peaceful ideas
is largely due to the leadership. The minister of Education George Murray made many speeches that
supported the violent actions, and encouraged them. Within

Critical Analysis Of One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest
Whissen, Thomas Reed. One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest: Ken Kesey (1962). Contemporary
Literary Criticism, vol. 341, Literary Resource Center, Accessed 6 Nov. 2017. Thomas Whissen
shares a deeper look into the critically acclaimed, One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest. In Whissen
s writing, he describes how the book is a depiction of a modern morality play. Kesey s writing
gives his readers a relatable, savior of the institution, Randle McMurphy. Kesey also delights his
readers with a mysterious, yet decisive character in Chief Bromden. Whissen gives insight on
how this book became a world renown cult classic representing true evil that lives inside all of
us. Thomas is able to clearly compare the writing of Kesey to the infamous Adolf Hitler and the
horrors of the Nazi concentration camps. Throughout the book the reader is able to realize that
Kesey s main idea was to develop a type of good vs evil or conformity vs nonconformity and
Whissen is able to demonstrate multiple examples through his representation of One Flew Over
the Cuckoo s Nest. One of the many examples Whissen provides is how McMurphy is able, in
such a short time, to change the whole structure of the ward. McMurphy is able to change the
ideologies of all the men in the institution and encourage non conformism of the men through a
series of protests and strikes. Mr. Whissen is able to bring this to light by saying that even though
someone is condemned by society they can still rebel and put a dent in society s

Themes Of Letters To Kappus
In Letters to a Young Poet, Rilke writes letters to Kappus giving him advice and helping him figure
out solutions to deal with his problems. Themes such as solitude, childhood, criticism, and love tied
in into his life lessons trying to give Kappus a different perspective. Rilke taught Kappus to enjoy
solitude, maintain childhoodinnocence, ignore people s opinions, and to value the true meaning
of love. Not only does Rilke help and inspire Kappus but his readers as well. These letters allow
readers to form a new perspective on life due to Rilke s wisdom and knowledgeability. What is
necessary, after all, is only this: solitude, vast inner solitude. To walk inside yourself and meet no
one for hours that is what you must be able to attain, (Rilke 41). Rilke wanted Kappus to realize
that there is no reason to fear solitude. Solitude is about enjoying time spent alone, allowing people
to explore what s within. People tend to present themselves in a different manner when around
others but solitude allows one to be themselves. Not taking the time to get to know what is within
and constantly being surrounded by people, may have a negative effect on a person. Someone who
doesn t take the time to get to know themselves will allow others to shape them into the person
they feel they re expected to become. In reality, no one can tell someone who they should be,
people can only figure that out for themselves. With solitude no one can criticise one s behavior or

Analysis Of The Story Of Ishmael And The Story Of Esau
Two stories and One lesson While reading the story of Ishmael and the story of Esau, readers
could easily find some similarities. Both stories delineates the process of the disfranchisement of
the elder sons firstborn right, the expulsion of certain characters, and the instruction of God. Those
similarities make people to wonder that whether the two stories are just the same kind of story
written to teach the believer the same lesson. This essay is divided into three parts and aimed to
prove that the disfranchisement stories of Ishmaeland Esau are essentially the same story told over
two generations First of all, every main character of the Ismael narratives has its exact counterpart
in the Esau narratives: Ishmael corresponds to Esau, Isaacto Jacobs, Abraham to Isaac, and Sarah
to Rebekah. In Ishmael and Esau s case, according to Genesis, Ishmael was the child of Hager,
the Egyptian slave, and Abraham. He was hated by his mother , Sarah, who was Ishmael s
mother in law according to the ancient surrogate motherhood customs: a wife could give her
maid to her husband and claim the child as her own () and initially protected by his father
Abraham. He was the victim who was casted out by Sarah and lost his birthright. Esau was also
hated by his mother, Rebekah, while loved by his father, Isaac, accordingly(Genesis 25:28), and he
lost his birthright and the death blessing in the end. Not only did Esau and Ishmael share the
similar kind of living circumstances, they also

about his excursion to the sub arctic Barren Lands of Canada to study how wolves act and how
the community is being affected by the wolves. The people of Churchill lead Mowat to believe
the wolves are something that they aren t, which is a blood thirsty killer. Mowat then uses the
rhetorical strategy Pathos throughout the book to show you how he personifies the wolves and
how fear is all in our minds. Pathos represents an appeal to the emotions of the audience. Mowat
uses this rhetorical strategy to get us to feel the emotions that he felt. When arriving in
Churchill, Mowat says that he discovered that although wolves reputedly devour several people
in the Arctic Zone every year, they will always refrain from attacking a pregnant eskimo (24). In
Chapter 4 When is a Wolf Not a Wolf?, Mowat shares his fear. He hears howling in the distance
and quickly hides saying I found myself wishing I were a pregnant eskimo (42). Although this is
funny, it made me feel fear for Mowat because of Churchill s rumors that you would be eaten. It
turns out the howling was just huskies which led Mowat to the realization that maybe everything
that the people said isn t true. A couple chapters later in Chapter 7 The Watcher Watched, Mowat
learned that maybe wolves aren t savage killers and maybe just the opposite of that. This lesson
was learned when Mowat was out searching for the wolves and they were behind him the whole
time. A struck of shock lit Mowat up when he realized that the wolves had any chance to attack him
and they didn t, instead they sat quietly and observed Mowat. This sent fear through me because it
led Mowat to new ideas which means he s going to put more trust into the wolves and go right into
it with an open mind. From Chapter 7 on, the whole perspective changes. Personification is the
attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something nonhuman, or the
representation of an abstract quality in human form. To get you attached to the wolves, Mowat
personifies them. This mostly starts in Chapter 9

Analysis Of Lucky By Alice Sebold
Summary
Lucky by Alice Sebold s is a memoir in which she speaks about her traumatic experience that she
went through during her freshman year at Syracuse University in New York. Alice was beaten
and raped one night when she was walking alone back to her dorm. A black male grabbed her
from behind with a knife and told her that he would kill her if she screamed. The black male took
Alice into a tunnel where he beat her up and forced her to perform oral sex on him. Alice was still
a virgin prior to the rape. After the black male raped Alice, he showed feelings of remorse, he
helped Alice put her clothes back on. Alice lied and told him that it was okay and that she
forgave him. Alice reports the incident to the police and the officer tells Alice that she should
consider herself lucky because a girl had been killed in the same place where she was raped. The
rape took a toll on Alice because she seemed to pretend like it was okay when it was not. She
started seeing everything differently, every black male she came across she would be reminded
of her rapist. Alice also experienced trouble in relationships with men because she did not
consider herself to be worthy of any good guy because no guy would want her since she was a rape
victim. Alice expressed anger towards her rapist when she runs into him again one afternoon and
he approaches her and says that she looked familiar. Alice speaks about wanting to kill her rapist.
Alice s rapist is taken into custody and they have a

Assess the Impact of Interference by Foreign Powers on...
Assess the impact of interference by foreign powers on China s development in the 20th century
During the 20th century China underwent a massive transformation. In the early 1900s China was
a mass of land lacking any real political cohesion and so was plagued by disputes between the many
ruling warlords. However, by the year 2000 China was considered a major contender on the world
stage and still is today; it almost seems certain that China will become the most powerful nation on
earth in the next 50 years. This major transformation is seen to be a great success of China,
considering the relatively short amount of time in which it was accomplished, but the question still
remains as to whether entire credit should be given to China ... Show more content on

Despite the burgeoning hope of a strong independent China, free of the exploitation of foreign
powers, Sun Yat Sen s aims were not achieved. However, this laid the basis for China s ideal of
developing their own independence.
A politician of great significance was Mao Zedong, the first Chairman of the People s Republic of
China. He had possibly the largest impact on the development of China, particularly with policies
such as his agricultural reform. Foreign interference, by way of Japan s invasion (1937 49), had
had a great negative effect on economic development. Their original intent to exploit China s
resources was manifested in mass murder across the country (the rape of Nanking being a focussed
example of this) and such destruction of infrastructure and mass looting that instances of
cannibalism became quite widespread. Hence, it was to Mao that much of the task of reforming and
rebuilding fell. Mao s greatest achievement, and the core of any development free of foreign
interference, was his success in harnessing the unquenchable spirit of the Chinese people. Their
unrelenting efforts went some way to counteracting the

Presidential Election Winner
Presidential Election Winner
The 2016 presidential election was one of the most controversial elections to have ever faced the
American people. Both major political parties ran on completely opposite platforms which caused
the American people to be divided more than ever on policies and beliefs. In fact, the outcome of
the election took the media, the American people and the world by surprise. This only divided the
American people even further. The Democrats were certain that their candidate, Hillary Clinton,
was to be the winner over Donald Trump. History though proved everyone otherwise with the loss
of Hillary Clinton. Many analysts claim that the Democrats loss of the presidency was due to FBI

t think Trump was qualified to be president. And yet one fifth of those voters voted for him
anyway. This only reinforces the fact that Clinton was not able to connect with the typical
Democratic constituents. If nearly 1 in 5 voters accepted Clinton s core argument about Trump

The Similarities and Differences of King Arthur and Lord Bercilak
There are similarities between every ideal and thought imaginable. There are also notable
differences between the infintant ideals, tangible or not. The comparisons can seem unlikely
however are still comparable and contrastable. Likewise Arthurian characters are closers than they
seem at first look. King Arthur and Lord Bercilak compare and and contrast through their ways of
hospitalities, principles, and religious views.
Both King Arthur and Lord Bercilak show immense amounts of hospitalities to the guest whom of
which enter their castle. As stated, As King Arthur s court feasts on New Year s Day, a mysterious
Green Knight appears offering a strange challenge (Alex). Clearly Arthur feeds anyone who entered
the castle. Also welcomed all guest with great gesture, just like he showed to the Green Knight. For
Bercilak it is stated that, Bercilak will exchange anything he captures hunting with anything Gawain
receives while staying in the castle (The Natural). He gave food in return for his wife s gifts
which shows that he was willing to feed Sir Gawain. Also he gave shelter to Gawain when he
could have easily rejected the knight. Both King Arthur and Lord Bercilak are proven hospitable by
nature.
Both the King and the Lord keep their responsibilities and show their principles. In the book Morte
D Arthur Sir Malory wrote, The the king got his spear in both his hands and ran towards Sir
Mordred, crying and saying, Traitor, now thy deathday has come! (Malory 189). During the time
of King Arthur killing rebels would be considered the duty of a king. Also he shows the principle
of keeping his kingdom intact with his citizens from falling into slavery, which would have
inevitably happened if Sir Mordred had taken rule of the realm of Arthur. Likewise stated by
Morpurgo, The Knight strikes, only nicking Gawain, then reveals himself as Bertilak, admitting that
he arranged the attempted seduction as a test of Gawain s virtue (Morpurgo). Lord Bercilak
committed his part of the deal without killing Gawain. Also teaching knights and showing them

Individualism In The Great Gatsby
The 1920s were years marked with wild economic prosperity, cultural flowering and shaking up
of social values in America. The period is nostalgically remembered as the Boom, the Roaring
Twenties and for the sake of this paper; the Jazz Age. The Jazz Age was coined by Scott
Fitzgerald, who in this era reached the pinnacle of his writing career (Shmoop Editorial Team).
The 1925 publication of the Great Gatsby impeccably captured the era s dispositions and styles.
America had overcome the harrowing effects of the First World War and by all means, the nation
looked like the next Europe on the horizon. This tremendous inflow of wealth brought with it a new
morality which was less worried about the conventional values of the previous generations.... Show

This is a sharp contrast from the icy rigidity implied by the title. It s this contrast that Fitzgerald
uses throughout the book to examine the cultural differences between the Southerners and the
Northerners. On a deeper level, not only does the story depict the differences in outlooks and
lifestyles between the two, but it also tackles the varying mindsets of communities and human
values across the world. Fitzgerald uses imagery to illustrate this rift. While describing the
Southern town, the author compares the sun to paint. He says The sunlight dripped over the
house like golden paint over an art jar . Apart from people in the town appearing to be slow and
lazy, the whole town seems to be suffering from the effects of too much heat, ...even the shops
seemed only yawning in their doors and blinking their windows in the sunshine before retiring
into a state of utter and finite coma.. Sally s lover Harry Bellamy is irritated by their
shiftlessness and thus regarding them as degenerates . Sally defends her home town by reiterating
that They may be lazy anybody would be in that climate . This sense of non belonging that Harry
feels while in the South is magnified when Sally visits the North. Sally s friends are worried that
she is engaged to a Yankee . She says that, although she loves her friends, it s highly unlikely that
will remain in the sleepy town,

When a loved when is gone it feels like a hole in the world. With much grief he says, Never again
will anyone inhabit the world the way he did. Questions I have can never now get answers. The
world is emptier. My son is gone. Only a hole remains, Avoid, a gap, never to be filled (33). This
phrase describes his emotions and how he views the world without his son. The author gives
advice on what to say to someone who is mourning. He says to never say its Ok because its never
okay and death is awful. What I need to hear from you is that you recognize how painful it is. I
need to hear from you that you are with me in my desperation (34). When some passes away no
one really knows what his or her loved ones are feeling because each death is unique and each
person is different. The wisest of words don t even make the pain go away, and all that can be done
is lending an ear to listen, a shoulder to lean on.
When there is nothing one can do to make things better again, to bring someone back, to be
happy again, all your left is emptiness. The author feels like something is over and that his life is
divided in a before and after. Something is over (46). The author goes on to have an out of body
experience where he attaches himself to Eric. He realizes that Eric s death is not only his loss but
also Eric s loss because he will never be able to do things he always wanted to do or be with his

Positive And Negative Effects Of Being A Twin
The Effects of Being An Identical Twin
When people see a pair of twins they are many questions that they ask at first, and they start to
check how good the similarities are between each other. Twins are always thought of something
special and magical, now don t get me wrong it is special because of the bond and relationship that
they create between each other. Even though just like any other thing it has its pros and cons.
The effects of being a twin is determined by more than a few factors, individuality, physically,
comparison, competition, Physiological and emotional. From the moment twins are born, they are
inseparable. They live together, have the same gender and even look the same, however the effects
of being identical twin has a long run effect on their future of social relationships, allowing them to
have a hard time finding themselves as individuals. One of the effects twins must deal with as their
growing up is individualism, just because their twins and were born on the same day and share
same physical, and similarities. People tend to forget that their two different people and they both
often get treated as one person. They both are two different human beings with separate goals,
mindsets and different personality. The effect that causes the same treatment to both can have a
negatively impact on them by having an impact in their self image and the ability to develop a
strong self identity. One thing that is important is that most of the twins have a strong

standards that you know you can overcome, or would you want to gain power your own way, and

uniformity in favor of diversity, in an attempt to gain some level of power. Throughout the novel,

In 1985, the microcomputer industry suffered its worst slump in over a decade. Many new
computer products had been promised or rumored but were not yet available, causing consumers
and businesses (due to recession fears) to delay purchases until they could evaluate the new
machines. Moreover, the home market was saturated and the market for new customers difficult to
penetrate. Consumer preferences also changed. Service and how new products fit into an existing
family of products had become more important. There was a growing demand for personal
computers that could communicate and share information. It was estimated that this demand was
growing at 30% a year, or twice the rate of the overall industry.

Strategic change views the renovation of a business, not only the way the firm works but also
do way all system is organized, while operational changes only are important to prevent the
business to fail.Mintzberg (1998) has offered five definitions of strategy: as a plan, a ploy, a

traditional view of strategy, where the strategic plans are drawn up by the senior managers to be
implemented by others. The evolutionary approach is the answer of senior managers to the market,

In the following paper, I will talk about the movie The Shawshank Redemption. I will include the
plot, characters, contrasting and comparing pieces of information from the book to the movie, and
the lesson I gained from this assignment.
The Shawshank Redemption was written and directed by Authors Stephen King and Frank Darabont
in 1994. The scene takes place at Shawshank Prison located in Maine. The film tells the story of
Andy Dufresne, a quiet banker who is sentenced to life in the penitentiary for the murder of his

Panama History and Culture Essay
Panama History and Culture The culture and political structures of Panama as we know it today has
evolved from an incredibly diverse and interesting history. Geographically, Panama lies on an
isthmus, a strip of land that essentially connects the greater landmasses of North and South
America. It is believed that volcanic activity in the late Pliocene era closed the former Central
American Seaway that had separated the two continents. The climatic implications of this landform
are incredible, allowing for the redistribution of oceanic currents and the formation of the Gulf
Stream of the Atlantic of today. The native populations of Panama include the Chibchan, Chocoan,

However, this union too would collapse in 1840, when separatist Panamanian forces led by a group
of rebels called the Sociedad de Amigos del PaГs began to resist the governance of BogotГЎ.
Panama is geographically placed at extreme economic advantage due to its close and centralized
proximity to North and South America and easy accessibility by sea, yet the Columbian Republic
kept this advantage at bay for political purposes, creating a situation in which Panama was
essentially left at an economic standstill. This tactic created a situation which made Panama s
economic advancement nearly impossible. This coupled with requests for large sums of money
from the Panamanian treasury to fund the war in Pasto, despite unquestionably trying times, led to
the revolutionary upheaval. In October of 1840, the new Governor Carlos de Icaza refused to
comply to yet another request from BogotГЎ for more funds from Panama on the grounds that the
Panamanian treasury was empty. Four weeks after this announcement, on November 18, 1840,
Panama declared its independence (MГ©ndez). In 1903, the United states under President
Theodore Roosevelt signed a treaty with Panama which gave over the rights to build and control
the passage through what we now know as the famous Panama Canal, with the purpose of creating
a politically, economically and geographically significant waterway that would allow for the travel

Gumbo is a dish that is made differently depending on the cultural background of the person
making it. The name gumbo, comes from the Bantu word nkombo, which stands for okra.
Gumbo is originally from Africa and was defined as a soup dish (Owens 1). Ingredients such as,
chopped onions, shrimp, andouille sausage, chicken, salt, garlic, celery, parsley, bell peppers,
okra, and roux are what make up a gumbo. Roux is a thickener for gumbo and there are many
different ways to make it. This thickener is made with flour and butter, oil or fat. Gumbo creates
cultural diffusion near the south. The way that people prepare gumbo or how popular it is
depends on how far they are from South Louisiana. Gumbo has many cultural influences such as:
Western European, African, Caribbean, and Native America (Gumbo Festivals 2). Gumbo can be
made many different ways because of these cultures. The traditional gumbo recipe includes
chicken and sausage but there are also many different seafood recipes that include shrimp, oysters,

Stalinist Gulag Camps And Violations To Human Rights
Stalinist Gulag Camps and Violations to Human Rights There are many types of different labor
camps that were meant to confine a group of people, but one of the most significant were
Stalinist Gulags, leading to the disappearances of millions of people. The Stalinist Gulags are in
violation of many articles, but a few are Articles 4, 5, 9, and 10. Article 4 is stated that no one
shall be held in slavery, which in Gulags they are doing forced and unpaid labor. Article 5 states
that no one should be subjected to cruel, and degrading treatment or punishment, which there
was quite a bit of that happening in gulags. Article 9 says that no one should be subjected to
arbitrary arrest (random arrest), detention or exile, people would just be randomly put in the
camps if they were thought to be rebels, without a hearing that is. And the last Article, Article 10,
states that everyone should have a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial
tribunal, but people would commonly just disappear and no one would know where they went,

Analysis Of Sophocles Antigone By Sophocles And The...
Since ancient times, Greece has honored the importance of family relationships and values
through their literature and culture. The importance of kinship is seen explicitly in the plays
Antigone by Sophocles and The Libation Bearers by Aeschylus. Both plays utilize family values
as their central theme and root of action. The depth of blood bonds is the driving force behind the
thoughts, actions and decisions of the characters and the conflict and plot in the plays. However,
the path that each character takes branches from this theme. Though the source of motivation in
both plays coincide, the characters in each play approach familial values differently. While the
characters in Antigone respond in a more traditional and proper way, the characters in The
Libation Bearer that respond with bloody and dark actions. In Antigone, Antigone s actions are
spurred by love and loyalty towards her brother, Polyneices. When her brother s corpse is left to
rot without a proper burial, Antigone takes it upon herself to bury her brother against the threat of
death penalty administered by Creon who had assumed the throne of her land. Antigone is the
paradigm of piety by showing unwavering loyalty to her brother even in the face of death. I shall
never be found his traitor (Sophocles22). The word traitor implies that Antigone sees inaction as a
betrayal to her brother. She feels obligated to bury his corpse even though her brother and her
parents are unable to pass judgement upon her.

Cultural Barriers In Society
Most children of immigrant parents are living a double life: American citizen by day and citizen of
their homeland at night. The expectation from these children is to assimilate into a new culture and
still hold on to their native roots. In theory they should be getting the best of both worlds. However,
in reality many of these children will grow up in the American society with a confused, unhealthy
mindset and not progress as they should. Above all, not being able to fit into one culturecan
desensitize someone, cause cultural barriers, and affect an individual s mental health. First, An
individual who does not fit into a single culture can be desensitized to a topic, because they
cannot make the same emotional connections. The soccer scene in the movie Battleship is a
good example. Members of the American and Japanese military are having a soccer match in
Honolulu Hawaii, and the score is two to zero in favor of the Japanese. As the game progresses
the American team is starting to become nervous and anxious. Suddenly just before the end of the
game Alex Hopper one of the main characters suffers an accident rewarding him with a penalty.
The crowd goes silent as they hope that Alex can make a goal and end the game with a point.
Sadly, Alex miss the goal, and the sound of a whistle can be heard signaling the end of the match.
The American military team lost and the audience starts to walks away from the scene with
devastation written all over their face as they see the

The Book Summary In John Steinbeck s The Pearl
The book The Pearl takes place in a small fishing village in La Paz, Mexico. The main characters
are from an Indian tribe that live on the beach in brush houses, since Spaniards have kicked them
out of their homes. There is a poor fisherman named Kino, his wife Juana, and their son Coyotito.
One day Coyotito gets stung by a scorpion, but the family cannot support the cost of the treatment,
so they go and try to find a pearlto then sell. When looking in the water, Kino finds a magnificent,
shiny, big, and beautiful pearl. However, when going to sell it Kino does not like the prices the
pearl buyers will buy it for, so he decides he will cross the sea and the mountains to the Capital. I
think what drives Kino through the book is a fear of the amount of money he will earn, being
cheated with the value of the pearl, and Juana and Coyotito s safety from attackers/trackers. To
begin, what drives Kino is fear of not getting the correct amount of money he needs from the
pearl to supply all the things he desires. First of all, this is because Kino explains that the pearl is
worth more than what the pearl buyers are willing to pay for it. The first pearl buyer says, I can
give you, say, a thousand pesos. Kino s face grew dark and dangerous. It is worth fifty thousand, he
said (50). He later says he will go to the Capital and sell it there instead, but I can tell Kino is
worried of what is to come, and if he will get the correct amount of money for the pearl. Following,

When Did Samuel Wrote The Book Of Judges
The book of Judges is an extremely interesting book in the Old Testament that explains to readers
that sin or failing to follow God s law will result in punishment. While there is no biblical
clarification of who wrote the book of Judges, multiple sources suggest that Samuel was the
author. Many come to this conclusion because of the use of the phrase in those days there was no
king in Israel (Judges 17:6; 18:1; 19:1; 21:25) this indicates the book s composition happened
during a time when Israel had a king. While this does not solidify the author s identity, there are
verses throughout Judges that provide contextual clues alluding to Samuel being the author of the
book. For the sake of brevity, one can conclude Samuel was the author.... Show more content on

Each judge came after a period when the Israelites chose to disobey God s law. During the time of

God punished the people of Israel throughout the entire book of Judges.

years. Initial introduction occurred in Judges Ch. 13 when an angel spoke with his mother,

rhetorical Essay
Rhetorical Analysis The article We Are Training Our Kids to Kill by David Grossman is an
attempt at explaining the effect of mass media on our children as far as violence and the
impacting role it plays. Grossman, a self entitled world traveler and an expert in the field of
killology uses the rhetorical aspects of ethos, pathos, and logos to get his point across. Regardless
of the fact that Grossman did build some credibility for himself, used reasoning, emotion, and
some facts to support his opinion, he did not use them in a very effective way. I am going to label
this article as ineffective. The first reason I m ruling Grossman s writing as ineffective is because
he seemed to contradict himself throughout his writing. The... Show more content on

After Goldman makes this statement he doesn t go on to talk about the restrictions that parents
or our society in general have or should have on movies, video games, or other forms of media.
My third and final reason to show how Grossman s article is ineffective is that for a lot of the
examples he used, he had no legitimate proof or substance to support them, or make a connection
to his arguments. One of Grossman s statements that has no proof providing justification is In
reality, the average man would load his musket and bring it to his shoulder, but he could not bring
himself to kill. He would be brave, he would stand shoulder to shoulder, he would do what he was
trained to do; but at the moment of truth, he could not bring himself to pull the trigger. Here
Grossman is talking about soldiers in the Civil War. This statement was all assumed. There was no
journal, or historian quoted, or any other credible knowledge suppressed to support this. The author
talks like he knows the military realities and that may be the case, but I m sure that common sense
can tell the reader that Grossman does not have the knowledge to have this information in his
article without substance behind it. The military realities that the author knows are much more
modern and contemporary than those of the Civil War. Times change and so does the military
along with it. Over all,

Freud s Pychoanalytic Theory
The only person with whom you have to compare yourself with is you in the past Freud, S. (n.d.).
In this assessment, I will cover the concept of Sigmund Freud s (1856) psychoanalytic theory. I will
also pay particular attention to the application of the psychoanalytic theory to my life in its entirety.
Specifically addressing my thoughts, emotions and feelings in certain situations and the way in
which my upbringing has shaped my personality.
What is personality?
Personality refers to an individual s unique set of consistent behavioural traits (Weiten, 2016, p.
334). Personality can also be used to describe why people act diverse in parallel situations. The
concept of personality is used to define the consistency and distinctiveness of a person s behavior
(Weiten, 2016).
Who is Sigmund Freud?
Sigmund Freud was born in 1856 into a Jewish home in Vienna (Weiten, 2016). He became a
physician and specialised in neurology, eventually dedicating himself to the treatment of mental
disorders, using a procedure he developed himself known as Psychoanalysis (Weiten, 2016). Freud
was also obsessed with sex and sexual urges (Weiten, 2016). Freud developed his Psychoanalytic
theory out of his workings with his patients (Weiten, 2016). This theory attempts to explain

The final sample for this study included eight participants in total. Five software professions
represented five different software organisations inSaudi Arabian, one senior academy and one
lecturer in public Saudi University represented the educational technology perspective. All
participants were male aged between 37 to 50 and no female were interviewed. Six participants
worked as system analysts during their career. Participants worked in a broad range of positions
within the organisation; the lowest has three years experience, and the height has ten years
experience. All earned university degrees. Four are Saudi Arabian and four not Saudi citizen but
all practices Islam as a religion. The interviews were held between June 2016 and July 2016 in
Saudi Arabia. The interviews were followed up by e mail correspondence for data validation and in
depth clarification. However, two senior academics expressed the intention to participate in the

Anti heroes are depicted as villains in fancy costumes, but I believe they are just heroes doing good

vigilantes, more than a villainous hero. That they re admirable people that just use unjustified

This shows me that Anti heroes tend to put others before themselves. This is because while their
label is Anti hero , it s only a classification which leads you to believe one thing when you could
be believing in their actions when you could be perceiving them as someone who is misread and
misjudged. I think that they are portrayed and evil , because they know the hardships of loss, and
want to prevent it from repeating to those around them. However, the way that these Anti heroes
and Bruce Wayne attempt to prevent this loss are questionable, I believe this is why people tend to
second guess that Anti heroes are real heroes. LINK BACK TO INTRO

more powerful than I thought. I had two powers that no one else has in the whole world. My first
power, which I ve decided to call Gamer allows me to see my stats like a video game. It shows me

Irish Fiddle Essay
I very much enjoyed Irish Folk Celtic Fiddle. The song is upbeat and exciting. When it first
began, I immediately thought of Irish step dancing and the tapping of shoes on the floor. It
easily makes one want to get up and dance. The reason it is perfect for dancing is because of the
enthusiastic rhythm and speed. It is played at a very fast tempo. When a tempo is quick, there is
more energy and it is thrilling compared to a slow song that is relaxing and meaningful. The
majority of the notes are very quick while a few are a bit longer. One part that interested me the
most was at 0:43 in the video and it caught my attention because the sound was unique. Just from
hearing it, I can imagine how difficult it must be to move a bow that quickly

Effects Of Kwanzaa On African Americans

African Americans recognize their struggles as people, and it reinforces the Seven Principles,

on the African harvest celebrations. This holiday was first created in 1966, during the Civil Rights
Movement, by Dr. Maulana Ron Karenga. 2016 is the 50th anniversary of the holiday. Even after
50 years, not many African Americans actually celebrate the holiday. But this holiday is not only

Bud, Not Buddy Essay
Did you know that almost all African Americans were homeless during the Great Depression?
Well, they were, and so was Bud Caldwell! Bud Caldwell is a ten year old African American boy.
He is the main character in the book, Bud, Not Buddy, written by Christopher Paul Curtis. After
Bud s mother died when he was six, Bud went to an orphanage. Then, Bud went to a foster
family, but the Amoses were very mean to him. So, Bud ran away. Bud started trying to find his
father in the hopes that he may not be an orphan anymore, and so that he wouldn t be treated so
awful. Bud, Not Buddy would be a different book if it were written in a white person s perspective
because white people got things that African Americans didn t, white people thought that they were
better than African Americans, Bud would have been treated better, and he would not have been
surprised when he found out that the Amoses had hot water running into their house. To begin
with, white people got better things than African Americans. In Chapter 16, Steady Eddie gave
Bud an instrument case because his suitcase was so tattered and old. If Bud was white, he would
have had a better suitcase because white people had more money in order to buy from stores. Also,

How Does Ed Byrne Create Humour
Ed Byrne, an Irish stand up comedian, uses various conscious techniques in order to create
humour. When performing, he tends to talk at a fast pace, uses body language and occasionally
uses profanity. In this essay, I will compare both comedian and writer, in how Ed Byrne creates
humour and if it reflects how Sarah Thorne describes how humour is produced in her chapter titled
The Language of Humour (Thorne 2008).
Ed Byrne predominantly discusses everyday life such as, becoming a father, relationships and
ordinary things such as attending the doctor s. Thorne states, humour is based on every day
observations , comedians make witticisms the audience can relate too, they have an understanding
as to where they re coming from and can identify truth in the exaggerated version of these events
Thorne 2008:502). Ed Byrne uses this method in virtually all of his shows as it forms a connection
with the audience as they are seen as equal to one another. Author, Alison Ross states that laughter
comes from the enjoyment in shared human experience. (Ross 1998:106).

The joke is humorous as tin foil and aluminium foil are two different things, therefore the joke is
on Ed Byrne. An English audience would recognise the term tin foil . Sarah Thorne says humour
can become anti social , meaning the audience are left feeling shocked rather than amused. (Thorne
2008: 508). If the geographical identity of the audience were American, the joke would not work as
it s discourteous to suggest everyone dislikes Americans. The rhetorical question combined with
profanity, the pause and then the incongruity signalling the end of the joke, all enhance the
delivery. According to a lecture, part of module 100DEL, the context of the joke defines the
audience, shifting our interpretations of how a joke is understood (Cribb 2015). This means a
comedian has to consider the audience whilst developing their

  • 2. Discursive Practices and Gendered Reflections of Its Use Introduction The following theoretical framework is divided in five sections. The first one deals with the background to the study where a classification of research studies is done in terms of the way that language and discourse have been researched. The second part reflects the issue of gender in applied linguistics. The third tackles some key conceptualizations of literacy in terms of the research study. The fourth aims to explain how writing is undertaken to fulfill a brief description of the basis that underlies the study. Within it, it is explained the write to learn perspective that is the scope of the investigation. Background to the study Bucholtz (2003) asserts that discourse is language in context. Discourse enables establishing the existing relationship between language and gender within a given context. Then, discourse becomes the materialization of such a relationship. That is why discourse analysis has become one of the most outstanding methodologies to unravel gender issues within the EFL classroom. The foci of these studies have been the way the discursive practices are used and what gendered reflections this use shows. Some of these studies stress discourse as an anthropological tradition (Bucholtz, 2003). This point of view highlights how language is used in the cultural practices of the human beings. It also cares for the existing differences between men and women; but most importantly the closed relationship between culture and language use Explain ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Culture Awareness In Nigeria Culture is defined as the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group. according to Merriam Webster (2017). What does this mean to the average individual? When surrounded by various cultures, as humans, we sometimes have tough decisions to make. You can develop new relationships, or avoid another due to one s culture. The world is a very intriguing place because no matter where you go, no country, state or city will be exactly the same. It is always interesting to compare countries to America to realize how different our culture compares to others. For example, Nigeria(when compared to the United States) is a very different place which could be a vast culture shock to someone who is not familiar with that specific culture or society. Nigeria is relatively small but has a population which surpasses Russia. This being said, in Nigeria the average age is only 17.9 years old where the United States and Russia have an average age of 38 years old. Understanding culture awareness and its effect on the way humans live can make one very successful when they find themselves in a foreign environment. Nigeria is small in relation to the United States of America while still being the 32nd largest nation in the world. Despite its size Nigeria has a population of 190,632,261, according to The World Factbook (2017), which is the seventh largest in the world. The President of Nigeria is Muhammadu Buhari who was once a military ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Movie Wit I found this movie interesting because I agree with what the film implied on how the universal constant about being a patient is vulnerability and loss of control. In the movie Wit, you get to see another side of the medical profession that shows disregard for medical humanities. The film tells the story of an intellectual, Vivian Bearing, being diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer, the treatment, and how she is stripped of her personal and professional status in the name of being a patient. A major theme of this filmis its portrayal of the human condition in a state of dependency and need by chronicling Vivian s experimental treatment through first person narrative, the film allows the viewers a peek into the world of a patient suffering... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But I flatter myself. The article will not be about me, it will be about my ovaries. With Vivian becoming more fearful of the treatment and her future, Susie discusses what end of life options are available. Decisions about the nature of end of life can influence the research objectives; to revive the patient would lengthen their life and allow the trial to continue. The film ended with Jason finding out that Vivian has died. He immediately calls the resuscitation team and tries reviving her because he still sees her has a potential research subject, despite Vivian s decision to have the do not resuscitate . As I reflect on what I ve seen in this movie, I can say that, being a medical doctor is not all about the knowledge of every disease, or the making of a miracle drug. A doctor should see from different perspectives to truly understand their patients. This film taught me that saving lives is not merely preventing their hearts from stopping but letting them acquire the quality of life they need and deserve. As a nursing major, I will keep in mind the moral lessons of this film and will use it as a foundation to treat my future patients, and as to how I want to be treated by my doctors, especially with respect, empathy, and ... • 7. Essay On 1960s Religion The 1960s was a rapid, evolutionary new burst in religious change. People during this era ignored their parents and grandparents values, and made their own. This caused a dramatic decrease in churchgoing numbers, and christian values in the south. These changes can be connected with the direction the world was going. Politics, mobility, and great leadership had a huge impact on the religionof the 1960s. After this period, Christians still, even today, try to return the values of traditionalism (Matthews). The politics of the time brought great change, president John F. Kennedy, was the first Catholic president of the United states. The mobility of the times brought new ideas to the American south, and denounced protestant thought. The immigration of 1965 opened the U.S. up to massive immigration. Many immigrants from all over Asia came to America during this time bringing their ancient religions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I have never been a believer of fundamental values and interpreting the bible literally. However, religion is so deeply stained into the fabric of the south, I can not imagine a south without the strong influence of religion it has. It is amusing to me, that we can not agree on one united church. We are so different in our faiths, everywhere you look here has a church with its own unique faiths. I do not know why, but I feel like religion gave the southern people a sense of righteousness during the 1960s. I feel like the southern people knew their God would have wanted them separate from blacks, and try to block out the rest of worlds changes from changing the South. We try to instill these religious values in our culture I think to try and keep morals and values alive. Except, humans do not need religion to know the difference between right or wrong. Without the reevaluation of southern identity during the 1960s, the reevaluation may have not turned out the way it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Catch 22 Satire For hundreds of years, human society and behavior has been a subject of strong criticism. No society is flawless, and humans definitely aren t, so both are targeted with great scrutiny. These issues were magnified during World War I, which caused millions of deaths through war and genocide. After WWII, a new genre of literature began to materialize. The Postmodern genre was a new and vastly different route to fiction. The great death and suffering of WWII caused many to focus their writings more on the killing and power hungry desires of the society we live in, and thus gave birth to the genre. Most works of postmodern literature were written to criticize the darker and controversial issues of society and human behavior through satire and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Slaughterhouse Five especially, it is undoubtedly obvious when Vonnegut is employing satire. However, in American Psycho, Ellis employs satire throughout the whole novel, but it wasn t nearly as clear. The contents of the novel are so horrible and so despicable, that many may not realize that they are, in fact, satirical. Some satire is obvious, especially when employing sarcasm or irony, like when Bateman says: the total is $475, much less than expected. (Ellis, 51) and meeting with my lawyer about some bogus rape charge: (Ellis, 200), but other instances of satire, specifically the moments of sheer inhumane acts, are so shocking that many perceive them differently. They may miss that the purpose of Patrick Bateman being so despicable is to satirically criticize social classes, gender roles, discrimination, and ignorance. One of the issues with satire is because it s so humorous, some interpret it to be disrespectful or not suited for literature. In the critical essay So it goes by Thomas Meaney, the issue of such excessive use of satire is brought to light. Vonnegut deprecates any attempt to see tragedy that day in Dresden (Meaney) Some are offended by heavy use of satire, sarcasm, and irony. Although these techniques are effective, they can cause negative reactions from certain readers, and are therefore risky. No matter the risk, Postmodern authors rely heavily on satire to convey their ideas and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Physical Abuse Essay Life is complex and there is still an abundance of knowledge we have yet to gather about it. We know where it originated and what has evolved from it. From the knowledge we gather about the world around us, we can develop a sense of self and who we are as a person. As soon as we know who we are, we then begin to acknowledge that there are people around us that we relate closely to by blood or by choice; family. Our family can be the people we eat with around the dinner table or the people who remain by our side through the hardships and the good times. The feelings we encompass for these people around us may be everlasting love, but it can also be animosity. We can appreciate these people and all they do for us, or despise their every being. As a result of the hatred we may embody toward someone, we may act out. Maybe by using verbal abuse, and maybe with physical abuse. Some of the best ways to help children cope with the mental and physical abuse from their childhood would be to encourage them to discuss the events and assure them it was not their fault, recognize the self destructive ways they act out as a result and provide support, and inspire them to get more involved in their school and community, all of which will contribute to them moving past their trauma and easing back into reality and a better future. • 13. Mental Health In John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men The definition of a stigma is, a mark of disgrace associated with a particular circumstance, quality, or person (Oxford Dictionary). In John Steinbeck s Of Mice and Men, Lennie and Crooks worked very hard at the farm both physically and mentally. Both men are forced to live partial lives, due to others diminishing their life worth. Lennie and Crooks, both have to deal with the lives they were born with. Stigmas oppress people in different ways and are present in many other countries; a person that holds a stigma must overcome many forms of derision. Mental Health has had a large stigma from the beginning, many of these come from ignorance. The stigma, myths and misconceptions surrounding mental illness contribute to much of the discrimination and human rights violations experienced by people with mental disorders (Ndetei et al., 2007a). (Ngui 1). Many people just do not understand what it is to have a mental illness; they only know what they hear from others, even that many are far from what it actually is. INTERLOCKING CONCRETE PAVERS: This style is another permeable paver, and they lock together for a good, tight fit. These make beautiful patios, walkways, and driveways. Some are standard shaped, but others are special shapes which interlock in beautiful patterns. The standout, defining feature of these pavers is that they give a solid appearance. The materials, however, allow water to seep through. This advantage is not found with all types of pavers, and sometimes this is the reason to opt for this type of paver. BRICK PAVERS: These kiln fired blocks are one of the most common types of building materials , and there are millions of homes around the country with bricks in the patio or walkway. They are durable. GRASS PAVERS: These pavers are an amazing technological feat. The purpose of these pavers is to manage the rainwater, and allow it to move back into the ground while keeping the ground stable and solid. They are beautiful as well, and can almost be an art form of their own. The geometric shapes can be complex, or quite simple, but all are a beautiful way to enhance your grounds while allowing a green space. These are wonderful for people who may have smaller yards. Thankfully, Tennesseeis an exception and TWRA s management of this species is being used as a model by other states to base their management on. • 17. The Black Panther Party The Black Panthers The Black Panther Party is a self defense, African American revolutionary party. This party was founded in Oakland, California by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale during the 1960 s. This party was dedicated to combating white oppression, and did so by the use of both peaceful and violent actions. Looking back at the history of the Black Panthers, it can be clearly seen that the peaceful idea of equality for all spawned this group and their violent actions for the main reason that they were willing to do anything to defend their beliefs. One of the greatest reasons for the violent actions of the party, should be credited to the co founder named Huey Newton. Huey Newton was a rebellious individual who was suspected of committing many crimes. As minister of defense within the party, Huey was seen as a leader to the members of the organization. In an interview with Newton, he made clear what he wanted the party to stand for, and what they needed to do to achieve this. In an excerpt from the interview transcript, he says that there are two kinds of nationalism, revolutionary and reactionary nationalism. Revolutionary nationalism is first dependent upon a People s revolution with the end goal being the people in power... If you are a reactionary nationalist you are not a socialist and your end goal is the oppression of the people. (Newton 1). From this transcript, it can be inferred what kind of nationalism Huey wants the party to follow. He wants the people to gain power through the use of violence And extremism. As the interview continues, Huey states the views of the Black Panther Party by saying The Black Panther Party, which is a revolutionary group of black people, realizes that we have an identity. We have to realize our black heritage in order to give us strength to move on and progress (Newton 1). By saying this, Huey is announcing to the world that the Black Panthers are going to cause a dramatic change, and implies that they will do whatever is necessary as long as they have the strength. The cause for violence from peaceful ideas is largely due to the leadership. The minister of Education George Murray made many speeches that supported the violent actions, and encouraged them. Contemporary Literary Criticism, vol. 341, Literary Resource Center, Accessed 6 Nov. 2017. Thomas Whissen shares a deeper look into the critically acclaimed, One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest. In Whissen s writing, he describes how the book is a depiction of a modern morality play. Kesey s writing gives his readers a relatable, savior of the institution, Randle McMurphy. Kesey also delights his readers with a mysterious, yet decisive character in Chief Bromden. Whissen gives insight on how this book became a world renown cult classic representing true evil that lives inside all of us. Thomas is able to clearly compare the writing of Kesey to the infamous Adolf Hitler and the horrors of the Nazi concentration camps. Throughout the book the reader is able to realize that Kesey s main idea was to develop a type of good vs evil or conformity vs nonconformity and Whissen is able to demonstrate multiple examples through his representation of One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest. One of the many examples Whissen provides is how McMurphy is able, in such a short time, to change the whole structure of the ward. McMurphy is able to change the ideologies of all the men in the institution and encourage non conformism of the men through a series of protests and strikes. Mr. Whissen is able to bring this to light by saying that even though someone is condemned by society they can still rebel and put a dent in society s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Themes such as solitude, childhood, criticism, and love tied in into his life lessons trying to give Kappus a different perspective. Rilke taught Kappus to enjoy solitude, maintain childhoodinnocence, ignore people s opinions, and to value the true meaning of love. Not only does Rilke help and inspire Kappus but his readers as well. These letters allow readers to form a new perspective on life due to Rilke s wisdom and knowledgeability. What is necessary, after all, is only this: solitude, vast inner solitude. To walk inside yourself and meet no one for hours that is what you must be able to attain, (Rilke 41). Rilke wanted Kappus to realize that there is no reason to fear solitude. Solitude is about enjoying time spent alone, allowing people to explore what s within. People tend to present themselves in a different manner when around others but solitude allows one to be themselves. Not taking the time to get to know what is within and constantly being surrounded by people, may have a negative effect on a person. Someone who doesn t take the time to get to know themselves will allow others to shape them into the person they feel they re expected to become. Both stories delineates the process of the disfranchisement of the elder sons firstborn right, the expulsion of certain characters, and the instruction of God. Those similarities make people to wonder that whether the two stories are just the same kind of story written to teach the believer the same lesson. This essay is divided into three parts and aimed to prove that the disfranchisement stories of Ishmaeland Esau are essentially the same story told over two generations First of all, every main character of the Ismael narratives has its exact counterpart in the Esau narratives: Ishmael corresponds to Esau, Isaacto Jacobs, Abraham to Isaac, and Sarah to Rebekah. In Ishmael and Esau s case, according to Genesis, Ishmael was the child of Hager, the Egyptian slave, and Abraham. He was hated by his mother , Sarah, who was Ishmael s mother in law according to the ancient surrogate motherhood customs: a wife could give her maid to her husband and claim the child as her own () and initially protected by his father Abraham. He was the victim who was casted out by Sarah and lost his birthright. Esau was also hated by his mother, Rebekah, while loved by his father, Isaac, accordingly(Genesis 25:28), and he lost his birthright and the death blessing in the end. • 22. Rhetorical Pathos In Never Cry Wolf By Farley Mowat What do you think of wolves? Do you think they re blood thirsty killers, or do you think they are rather friendly animals? In the book, Never Cry Wolf, (1963) the author, Farley Mowat, writes about his excursion to the sub arctic Barren Lands of Canada to study how wolves act and how the community is being affected by the wolves. The people of Churchill lead Mowat to believe the wolves are something that they aren t, which is a blood thirsty killer. Mowat then uses the rhetorical strategy Pathos throughout the book to show you how he personifies the wolves and how fear is all in our minds. Pathos represents an appeal to the emotions of the audience. Mowat uses this rhetorical strategy to get us to feel the emotions that he felt. When arriving in Churchill, Mowat says that he discovered that although wolves reputedly devour several people in the Arctic Zone every year, they will always refrain from attacking a pregnant eskimo (24). In Chapter 4 When is a Wolf Not a Wolf?, Mowat shares his fear. He hears howling in the distance and quickly hides saying I found myself wishing I were a pregnant eskimo (42). Although this is funny, it made me feel fear for Mowat because of Churchill s rumors that you would be eaten. It turns out the howling was just huskies which led Mowat to the realization that maybe everything that the people said isn t true. A couple chapters later in Chapter 7 The Watcher Watched, Mowat learned that maybe wolves aren t savage killers and maybe just the opposite of that. This lesson was learned when Mowat was out searching for the wolves and they were behind him the whole time. A struck of shock lit Mowat up when he realized that the wolves had any chance to attack him and they didn t, instead they sat quietly and observed Mowat. This sent fear through me because it led Mowat to new ideas which means he s going to put more trust into the wolves and go right into it with an open mind. From Chapter 7 on, the whole perspective changes. Personification is the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something nonhuman, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form. Assess the impact of interference by foreign powers on China s development in the 20th century During the 20th century China underwent a massive transformation. In the early 1900s China was a mass of land lacking any real political cohesion and so was plagued by disputes between the many ruling warlords. However, by the year 2000 China was considered a major contender on the world stage and still is today; it almost seems certain that China will become the most powerful nation on earth in the next 50 years. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Despite the burgeoning hope of a strong independent China, free of the exploitation of foreign powers, Sun Yat Sen s aims were not achieved. However, this laid the basis for China s ideal of developing their own independence. A politician of great significance was Mao Zedong, the first Chairman of the People s Republic of China. He had possibly the largest impact on the development of China, particularly with policies such as his agricultural reform. Foreign interference, by way of Japan s invasion (1937 49), had had a great negative effect on economic development. Their original intent to exploit China s resources was manifested in mass murder across the country (the rape of Nanking being a focussed example of this) and such destruction of infrastructure and mass looting that instances of cannibalism became quite widespread. Hence, it was to Mao that much of the task of reforming and rebuilding fell. Mao s greatest achievement, and the core of any development free of foreign interference, was his success in harnessing the unquenchable spirit of the Chinese people. However, this union too would collapse in 1840, when separatist Panamanian forces led by a group of rebels called the Sociedad de Amigos del PaГs began to resist the governance of BogotГЎ. Panama is geographically placed at extreme economic advantage due to its close and centralized proximity to North and South America and easy accessibility by sea, yet the Columbian Republic kept this advantage at bay for political purposes, creating a situation in which Panama was essentially left at an economic standstill. This tactic created a situation which made Panama s economic advancement nearly impossible. This coupled with requests for large sums of money from the Panamanian treasury to fund the war in Pasto, despite unquestionably trying times, led to the revolutionary upheaval. In October of 1840, the new Governor Carlos de Icaza refused to comply to yet another request from BogotГЎ for more funds from Panama on the grounds that the Panamanian treasury was empty. Four weeks after this announcement, on November 18, 1840, Panama declared its independence (MГ©ndez). In 1903, the United states under President Theodore Roosevelt signed a treaty with Panama which gave over the rights to build and control the passage through what we now know as the famous Panama Canal, with the purpose of creating a politically, economically and geographically significant waterway that would allow for the travel of ships from the ... The importance of kinship is seen explicitly in the plays Antigone by Sophocles and The Libation Bearers by Aeschylus. Both plays utilize family values as their central theme and root of action. The depth of blood bonds is the driving force behind the thoughts, actions and decisions of the characters and the conflict and plot in the plays. However, the path that each character takes branches from this theme. Though the source of motivation in both plays coincide, the characters in each play approach familial values differently. While the characters in Antigone respond in a more traditional and proper way, the characters in The Libation Bearer that respond with bloody and dark actions. In Antigone, Antigone s actions are spurred by love and loyalty towards her brother, Polyneices. When her brother s corpse is left to rot without a proper burial, Antigone takes it upon herself to bury her brother against the threat of death penalty administered by Creon who had assumed the throne of her land. Antigone is the paradigm of piety by showing unwavering loyalty to her brother even in the face of death. I shall never be found his traitor (Sophocles22). The word traitor implies that Antigone sees inaction as a betrayal to her brother. She feels obligated to bury his corpse even though her brother and her parents are unable to pass judgement upon her. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One day Coyotito gets stung by a scorpion, but the family cannot support the cost of the treatment, so they go and try to find a pearlto then sell. When looking in the water, Kino finds a magnificent, shiny, big, and beautiful pearl. However, when going to sell it Kino does not like the prices the pearl buyers will buy it for, so he decides he will cross the sea and the mountains to the Capital. I think what drives Kino through the book is a fear of the amount of money he will earn, being cheated with the value of the pearl, and Juana and Coyotito s safety from attackers/trackers. To begin, what drives Kino is fear of not getting the correct amount of money he needs from the pearl to supply all the things he desires. First of all, this is because Kino explains that the pearl is worth more than what the pearl buyers are willing to pay for it. The first pearl buyer says, I can give you, say, a thousand pesos. Kino s face grew dark and dangerous. It is worth fifty thousand, he said (50). Many come to this conclusion because of the use of the phrase in those days there was no king in Israel (Judges 17:6; 18:1; 19:1; 21:25) this indicates the book s composition happened during a time when Israel had a king. Regardless of the fact that Grossman did build some credibility for himself, used reasoning, emotion, and some facts to support his opinion, he did not use them in a very effective way. After Goldman makes this statement he doesn t go on to talk about the restrictions that parents or our society in general have or should have on movies, video games, or other forms of media. One of Grossman s statements that has no proof providing justification is In reality, the average man would load his musket and bring it to his shoulder, but he could not bring himself to kill. He would be brave, he would stand shoulder to shoulder, he would do what he was trained to do; but at the moment of truth, he could not bring himself to pull the trigger. Here Grossman is talking about soldiers in the Civil War. This statement was all assumed. There was no journal, or historian quoted, or any other credible knowledge suppressed to support this. The author talks like he knows the military realities and that may be the case, but I m sure that common sense can tell the reader that Grossman does not have the knowledge to have this information in his article without substance behind it.
