person, explaining his/her interest in the
quotation and its origin. The purpose is for each
student to develop strategies to improve their
pronunciation

sentences
Rhythm refers to the way stressed and unstressed
syllables make patterns in speech. In sentences,
• we only stress important information: nouns, ordinary
verbs, adjectives and adverbs (content words) and
• keep unstressed other unimportant words (function
words): pronouns, determiners, prepositions,
conjunctions and auxiliary verbs.
Stressed syllables are pronounced more slowly and
clearly. Unstressed syllables are pronounced more quickly
and less clearly, and are squeezed in between the
stressed syllables.

RHYTHM. Reduction of sounds
The elimination or reduction of sounds in grammatical (function) words is
very common in speech.
Most times function words are not essential to understand the overall
meaning of the discourse and, therefore, they are not stressed. On the
contrary, they get weaker and, as a consequence, the elimination or
reduction of sounds in these words is very common in speech. They are
source of confusion when listening and allow us to sound more natural
when we speak.
It is therefore most important to learn to pronounce these function words
weakly, contract them when you are speaking or reading aloud (even if
the contractions do not appear on the written text) and link them to the
important and meaningful words (which carry the stress).
