An obstruction is
created in the oral

Understanding Syllables
To understand word stress, it helps to understand
syllables. Every word is made from syllables.
Each word has one, two, three or more syllables.
Word Number of
syllables
Dog Dog 1
Quiet Qui-et 2
Expensive Ex-pen-sive 3
Interesting In-ter-est-ing 4
Unexceptional Un-ex-cep-tion-al 5

Syllable Stress
In linguistics, stress is the relative
emphasis that may be given to certain
syllables in a word. The term is also used
for similar patterns of phonetic prominence
inside syllables.
11A Blue Sky Presentation
Word Syllable Breakdown Number of syllables
dog dog 1
green green 1
quite quite 1
quiet qui-et 2
orange o-range 2

realistic re-a-lis-tic 4
unexceptional un-ex-cep-tio-nal 5
12A Blue Sky Presentation
The Role of Suffix
-ion
 For two-syllable words
with the suffix –ion, the
stress is on the first
syllable.
 For three- to four-
syllable words with
the suffix –ion, the
second to the last
syllable just before t
he suffix receives
the word stress.
