English Pronunciation Practice
Vowel Phonemes
Introduction
• It is essential for students who study
English as part of their profession to be able
to grasp all the subtleties of its
pronunciation. Thus, we need to practice
and develop the articulatory habits in order
to produce, for example, the differences
between “teen” and “tin”.
• Now we are going to revise how to
articulate vowels 1 and 2 correctly
according to BBC English.
Vowels 1 and 2
In order to produce vowel
number 1 as in “teen”, you need
to spread you lips. Then you
should raise your tongue
towards the front of your mouth.
The sides of your tongue should
touch the upper molars. Finally,
make sure you tense both your
tongue and your throat.
Vowels 1 and 2
• When producing vowel number 2, as in
“tin”, the front of the tongue is raised
towards the palate. The tongue should
be lax and its sides make a light
contact with the upper molars. Your lips
are slightly spread.
