Production Process Evaluation
Research
To conduct my research, I researched three products of choice (for each product's medium โ€“ a poster, a title sequence โ€“ although
I also created six timecards/segments for the title sequence,) โ€“ the first two were post-1990, whilst the other was pre-1990 โ€“
thus providing us with a deeper depth into the research of each product โ€“ on how the mediums developed over the years (-in
terms of style, layout, characters, ect...) Which helps me by giving me an example of structure/layout and how I could apply in the
all the used mediums (a poster and a title sequence. On top of this, with a wider range of research, I have a larger chance/
opportunities for inspiration....
Furthermore, to help me understand my audience better (as it would help me to understand โ€“ how I could appeal to my audience
more โ€“ as the more my product appeals to an audience, the better my product will do-) I did questionnaire and got people both
and out of my class (however to people round college-) to answer it. I used question such as "what is your gender" and "what is
your age" to understand my audiences statistics for age and gender, whilst asking questions like "what colours do you associate
with communism" - to get the audience common associations. By handing to these people (from around college,) I'll reaching out
to the audience closer to the psychographic primary age range. Furthermore, to help me fix my psychographic to suit my audience
better, I provided questions about the audience personally. I have however also included questions on a the audience's
expectation, opinions and ideas of the turn out of my product.
With the surveys โ€“ though can be very helpful on gathering information, as well as details on your audience - to help
my psychographic, whilst being able to gather there options and thoughts on certain topics โ€“ if the questions are
worded correctly... However, the survey is to still be answered by a group of people - in which we used a minimum of 5 people,
who will most likely put shortened answers โ€“as they aren't that motivated towards doing this. Some people may also obscure a
silly answers โ€“ such as, "unneeded violence and orphanages burning."
The qualitive properties of the products I researched was to a high standard โ€“ as I only chose to look at professional and/or
officially used products โ€“ meaning it has to be of a high quality. On top of this, I looked at a high quantitative range of products โ€“
to allow me a broader range of posters and titles sequences to look at...
Research
Strengths:
โ€ข With my research I did two post-1990 and one pre-1990 example โ€“ for each of the mediums โ€“ this
providing me with a balanced results in researched mediums...
โ€“ By researching both mediums I get broader sense of each of the mediums โ€“ because both mediums are explored you'll show a
more balanced confidence in the two mediums, whilst also, bringing your grade up by showing a stronger understanding in the
two mediums...
โ€ข Because I did one pre-1990 (on top of the two post-1990,) I have a more in-depth look into posters
and how they evolved over the years โ€“ and I can pick out older design choices (as well as the newer
one,) if preferred - thus giving me a broader set of inspiration.
โ€“ For example, with the limitations I'm facing in my final major project (-such as time and with my skills still developing,) I had to
look for something that would be easier to do or something less complicated to do โ€“ as with the technological advancements of
time, things that would have been harder to do in the past is now easier to do... e.g. by looking at something that's old but still
holds up - I'd be looking at something more in my skill range....
โ€“ With the James bond title sequence, they use a lot of moving images and footage โ€“ composed together to form their title
sequence, - this being a much easier effect to achieve, compared to Mad Men title sequence โ€“ in which I'd have to animated a
character and background (using to different styles and animation,) then successfully compose these two things together โ€“ all
whilst trying to keep the product smooth โ€“ e.g. with time things have become more complicated. For my final product I went for
a similar style, where I moved images to compose the sequence together (much like the bod sequence..)
โ€ข Because targeting my audience is important for this industry (as it can affect how well a show does
and makes.) In order to do this, I need to gain a broader understanding of my audience โ€“ to do this I
did interview โ€“ asking question to support and create my psychographic, as well as, asking
questions to include thing that would appeal to the audience more.
Research
Weaknesses:
โ€ข When trying to research a product, you're limited to what you find on the internet and you
have to know what you're looking for as google requires you to be more specific when you
search for something โ€“ in terms of the outcome of results...
โ€“ You have to know what you're looking for โ€“ before you can search it onto google.
โ€“ Even you know what you're looking for there's no guarantee you'll be able to find it, and even if you do find it (or
something close,) it could be to too smaller resolution or it could be a stock image that requires a payment โ€“
otherwise it's left with a water mark โ€“ however that may be possible to fix using the "Spot Healing Brush Tool" to
cover the watermark up โ€“ if lucky.
โ€ข With the survey's some of the responses, not everyone took it serious and I had found that
either the answers used were either blunt or silly โ€“ as nobody is forced to provide detailed
responses or take it serious โ€“ it's often found that it's not done to a high standard...
โ€“ With nobody (who's answering the questionnaire, not being forced to answer the questions to the best of their
abilities โ€“ answering it more because they've been told to, so they're answers are unmotivated and bored...
โ€ข Again, with the survey's, if you ask for detailed responses (e.g. comment boxes,) can't be put
into statistical data - so it because a choice for either a detailed response and loose the
statistical data or have the statistical data and loose the detail....
โ€“ As they're open thoughts and opinions โ€“ they can't be put into a format that can be turned into a date โ€“ e.g. tick
boxes, check boxes, ect... However, because the audience member will input an open answer, I'll have to use a
comment box...
Planning
For my planning we started of by planning three main ideas in (bubble.us - a
mind map website,) two alternate ideas and one main (selected) idea (more
in-depth other than other two.) Followed by talking through the strengths
and weaknesses of the chosen idea's (-so far from the mind map,) - picking
out points for both mediums.
Also โ€“ on top of my research, I looked at more products (in less detail,) on
a broader range of chosen products โ€“ e.g. a mood board. To do this I chose
twelve title sequences to look at, whilst looking at sixteen posters โ€“
always conducting both research and planning into two โ€“ one for the medium
of posters and the other for the title sequences.
Finally, I produced a physiographic and thought about how I can make my
product to fit it โ€“ in terms of colour schemes, images, running themes and
genre...
Planning
Strengths:
โ€ข By doing planning, I can receive a strong product that appeals to the audience better, as well as it
can provide a stronger consistency to product with a bigger depth to it...
โ€“ Using mind maps to plan โ€“ you can explore a strong amount of ideas and see what does and what doesn't work โ€“ if not as well.
This allowing me to make sure I've included stronger ideas into my final product.
โ€“ By filling out the required planning โ€“ this makes you think the product over and potentially encouraging you to expand on the
ideas โ€“ to give it some depth.
โ€ข As you've planned everything out already, I already know what to do โ€“ because I've already got
everything down and documented, I don't have to stop and constantly try and think of what I was
doing, I can just refer back to my planning...
โ€ข Doing research on existing products.
โ€“ By doing research โ€“ this pushes me to go out (onto the internet,) and find existing products โ€“ products that could inspire me
through tones, styles, layout, colour schemes, ect. An example of this one of the Luther posters, in which quite heavily inspired
part my original layout plan for my poster โ€“ where I was going to fade a scene into the main character's lower torso; whilst also
using allot of the layout, with just the main character in the foreground, with a textured background โ€“ allot of which made it
through to my final product.
Weaknesses:
โ€ข Because everything's already written down and planned out, this may encourage limitations on
creativity and experimentations โ€“ when it comes to production.
โ€“ As you already have everything planned out, you're more likely to follow the planning as a strict set of to dos โ€“ than a guideline
for a product.
โ€ข Doing research on existing products.
โ€“ By looking at other people's products, I'm likely to become attached to a concept โ€“ so much so, that I create a parody of the
original โ€“ only to fit my product's theme. E.g. this can de-encourage creativity โ€“ as I've already got a plan to copy...
Time Management
Strength:
โ€ข I took a lot of my work home and finished and worked on a lot of it in my
own time โ€“ as well as at college.
โ€“ To keep up with the smaller deadlines, what work I didn't finished in college, I took
home to complete โ€“ to ensure I wouldn't fall behind as done previously.
โ€ข I prioritise my work โ€“ based on what recourses I had.
โ€“ At college, because they had Photoshop on the computers โ€“ rather than at home in
which I had no editing software, I prioritised my work that photoshop to college โ€“ whilst
doing the rest either at college (if I had some time to do so,) or mainly at home โ€“ as to
not waist time.
Weakness:
โ€ข Furthermore, when it came to handing work in on time, I struggled with
the balance of keeping the quality of my work to a higher standard and
time โ€“ to overcome this I left allot of work to come back to...
โ€“ To get around this I got my work to a pass standard โ€“ before boosting the grade to a
much higher standard โ€“ thus ensuring at the least I passed.
Technical Qualities
Similarities -
โ€ข It includes the main character in the foreground of the poster.
โ€ข It uses a blue background, with faded images across is it โ€“ images
that link to the series.
โ€ข It uses big and bold logo in the centre of the page (however much
further down the page.)
Differences -
โ€ข They use two of the character โ€“ rather than using just the one,
whilst revealing more of them โ€“ e.g. like pulling the camera out
more.
โ€ข In this product they also use a lighter tone โ€“ apposed to the darker
and more shadowed product I produced.
โ€ข The feel of the product is allot less gritty than mine โ€“ using softer
texture โ€“ apposed to the rougher ones that I use. On top of that, for
the background I went for allot more a street feeling background โ€“
in which I used a broken brick work and concrete wall.
Audience Appeal:
โ€ข It uses a colour scheme โ€“ putting emphasis on the blue tones and
colours.
โ€ข The logo being big and bold โ€“ brings the audience's attention to
what the text says - "Sherlock."
โ€ข It uses the background to tease the audience of the series contents
โ€“ both giving them an incite and leaving them to inquire to the
context of it.
Technical Qualities
Link
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Be56k1Ui2Yg
Similarities -
โ€ข Both products use a consistent font style, whilst also using a rough
and grimy theme for the text.
โ€ข They use visuals for the character in the title sequence, paring with
the actors name/credit. Furthermore, they use each of these shots
to help sum up them as simply and quickly as possible.
โ€ข The colours used in the title sequence are lowly saturated and for
the best part drained of colour โ€“ if not black and white, with an
applied colour wash.
Differences -
โ€ข Unlike my product, this product uses a dark and heavy song to play
in background of there โ€“ however still using the song to a
somewhat of a link to the time of the product.
โ€ข The tone in this is much darker (than that of mine,) with much
stronger contrast.
Audience Appeal:
โ€ข They use some strong imagery โ€“ that links to the series and it's
characters.
โ€ข It matches some of the visuals to the beat of the theme song โ€“
leaving the product with quite a satisfying result...
Aesthetic Qualities
Strengths:
โ€ข I like the concept that I've used for the tile sequence โ€“ as it gives a incite into the times
(the 60s,) and London โ€“ using the backgrounds; whilst also blending in the communism
vs capitalism theme's (of the time,) into the sequence โ€“ through colour schemes
(capitalisms โ€“ blue and white, communism โ€“ red and yellow.
โ€ข I've included some subtle hints within the poster โ€“ like the connection between the
main character and the Russian cold war spy (the girl in the picture, in his top pocket,)
the hints to the times and the cold war.
โ€ข I've used a successful range of techniques to piece together an authentic looking
(photoshoped) picture.
Weaknesses:
โ€ข Some of the transition didn't work out fully how I had hoped, however due to the
limitations of time and the computer I was left to work on at home - as it wasn't a very
strong computer and couldn't handle all the work I gave it.
โ€ข For the poster, the shading on the hand (as they were photoshopped on,) were too dark
โ€“ in comparison to the rest of the character.
โ€ข Furthermore, with the poster the background and character appear quite separate โ€“
e.g. they don't blend together as we as hoped.
Aesthetic Qualities
Logo: for the logo, I used a bold and basic font โ€“ leaving it easy to read;
with a metallically applied texture; as well as overlaying that with a
image of clouds, leaving with a blue wash in bunches/patches -
reminding the audience of cold factor of the title, whilst keeping a grime
element to it (as blue is a typical colour used for gritty dramas;) finally I
used an "inner glow," applying bigger depth to the text โ€“ preventing it
from looking like the texture was just cut out, into the shape of the text,
- It also keeps the poster to a similar style as the title, as it uses the same
kind of text, just an alternative font...
Background: To help consistency between my two products (my poster
and title sequence,) I used the same background design (as well as the
logo โ€“ as that's crucially needs to be consistent โ€“ when used,) re-
applying the texture in the background, along with the ghosted images โ€“
which both keep the constancy to the poster and creates a style for the
series โ€“ through use of patterns , as well as maintaining the use of the
original effect โ€“ using these images to give my audience an idea of the
times (1960s.) Furthermore, with the ghosted images โ€“ it removes a
little more of the emptiness that the background had.
References: Despite this being a fictional series โ€“ that I've made up for
my FMP (final major project,) I still like the idea of applying hints to
(what would be) the source material. In our main character's pocket,
there's a picture of the Russian spy (as it's set in the Cold War,) in whom
he grows a connection with โ€“ creating a unique character chemistry (as
he's British (who are capitalists,) whilst she's a spy for the Russians (who
are communist...) Because he's detective, having her photo in his pocket
makes the female character appear more to be suspect or under
suspicion of something โ€“ e.g. she's be investigated... - hinting that she's
possibly not commonly thought of as a friend?
Aesthetic Qualities
Ghosted Images: With the background I added ghosted images to show
off the times (of the 1960s.) By doing this, I'm informing the audience of
the time it's set, whilst I'm giving the a small insight to the time's main
events โ€“ such as the cold war (in the upper left,) the cold war (in the
lower right) and some further cold war events โ€“ set in America, this time
(in the upper right...)
Black Tie: by giving the main character a black tie (a tie that would only
really be worn for funeral,) I can provide the idea of death (as the show
is murder show โ€“ it means people will be dying throughout the series,) -
which is important as it gives the audience a good insight into the show
and what it's a bout. Furthermore, because the character's wearing the
tie, it could imply that he's already prepared for a funeral or he's
expecting death โ€“ as death follows are character, like a shadow.
Tone: Through increasing the contrast, which makes the shadows
stronger - which give the piece a more intimidating appearance.
Colour Scheme & Colour: The red and blue colour scheme is used to
represent the colours for the cold war โ€“ e.g. blue for capitalism and red
for communism - based of the suggestions provided by the responses
given by my audience on the questionnaire (- on survey monkey.) As it
was perceived by the masses that blue and white were capitalism and
red and yellow for communism. On top of this both red and blue are
complimentary colours. As well as blue could be related to the sirens on
the police cars, whilst the red perceived as blood โ€“ from the bodies.
However I have left the main colour as blue throughout the piece as it's
quite a typical tone used throughout gritty, crime, dramas. As well as
being the colour related to the police and capitalisms โ€“ in which both
category's does this character fit into....
Aesthetic Qualities
Text: for the text I use the actors name, using a fairly bold font and the
metallic โ€“ texture and effect the โ€“ the one I used for the logo (only using
a different font โ€“ making sure that the text goes together, but there's
enough difference to appear more as a logo โ€“ rather than just another
piece of text.) Further more the actor's name is in a larger font size to
the text above โ€“ meaning the audience know this actor's place in the
show, but are more drawn in/captivated by the name below...

The Sun: Because this is a title sequence it's allowed to be quite
abstract, through this, I've changed the sun to the sigh for communism
(as this shows set in the 1960s, a time where there was a cold war
between Russian (who's' communist,) against Britain and America (who
were capitalist.) As this character is a Russian spy (as they were often
used at the time โ€“ between us and the Russians,) I've visually shown her
character using the sun as a sign to her character trait.
Colour: Being the communist character show throughout the title
sequence, this will be the only slide where the colour red is featured
prominently...
Costume: Again, to push the time period, I've given the actress a very
60s period look, given her both a typical 60s dress and hair style.
Aesthetic Qualities
Text: for the text I use the director's name, using a fairly bold font and
the metallic โ€“ texture and effect the โ€“ the one I used for the logo (only

Text: To help prevent the page feel less empty, I've spread out the text,
however keeping small enough to draw more attention to the logo (as
the bigger thing are, the more likely we are to look at it โ€“ compared to
smaller things.) On top of this I've kept the style of this text, the same as
the previous text through the title sequence โ€“ this way it keeps thing
more consistent, and thus more professional.
Background: To help consistency between my two products (my poster
and title sequence,) I kept the background design (as well as the logo โ€“
as that's crucially needs to be consistent โ€“ when used,) re-applying the

of the emptiness that the background had.
Audience Appeal
โ€ข With the tones and colours being more dark and gritty โ€“ it adds a kind of
maturity to the products โ€“ in which both my primary ages (16-19) and my
secondary ages (20+)
โ€“ I'd be appealing to my primary age range through the music used in my title sequence will
appeal to them because it's an old pop song (from the 60s,) which will link to the age range of
teenagers โ€“ who stereotypically are always listening to music e.g. music would appeal to my
primary age range - apposed to a specially composed theme and/or soundtrack would...
โ€“ I'd also be appealing to my secondary audience because of the characters of a similar age and
maturity.
โ€“ To appeal to the male appeal, I use allot of the colour blue โ€“ which is stereotypically
associated with the male gender. On top of this, with the looming dark theme of death and
murder โ€“ also stereotypically appeals to a male audience - apposed to female in which are
stereotypically into lighter hearted things.
โ€“ To appeal to the middle class appeal โ€“ the street visuals and rough concrete walls won't seem
to far from familiar, along with the money to be able to afford the technology to view the
product on.
โ€“ To appeal to the psychographic of - "Belongers" as this would be a TV show, this would
naturally most likely have a small following of people who tune in to watch the show โ€“ each
time it'd be on...
โ€“ On top of this, to appeal to the psychographics of - "Type A," I would implement a series of
moral based themes โ€“ into the show; whilst being set into the 60s โ€“ a time of peace โ€“ which
would also be quite appealing to them, as this psychographic worries about there effect on
the world...
Peer
Feedback
Feedback 1
โ€ข What did you like about the product?
โ€“ The videos was great it felt as if it was fluid and had good music
for the time period I also like how it simply runs into the next
image. The Poster was good as it looks as if it has a strong
design to it.
โ€ข What improvements could have been made to the
product?
โ€“ When it comes down to the poster if you made the background
a bit darker and add some gaussian blur, I would also say the
same for some of the parts of the video such as the second part
of the video and also when it comes down to the skull try and
make the eye lids disappear and then the communist sky maybe
if you included and add peach and orange to the sky.
Feedback 2
โ€ข What did you like about the product?
โ€“ I like the way the text moves in I think its done
very well. The transitions between scenes are
really good too.
โ€ข What improvements could have been made to
the product?
โ€“ I think some of the scaling could be better such as
the woman on the cliff is too big to be stood on
that small cliff also some of the characters look
weird not being cut out properly with sharp edges
Feedback 3
โ€ข What did you like about the product?
โ€“ Some of the transitions.
โ€“ The imagery in some of the slides.
โ€“ The song chosen.
โ€“ The colour schemes linking to the poster and last title
sequence shot.
โ€“ Quality of the images was good and clear.
โ€“ Has a consistent theme.
โ€ข What improvements could have been made to the
product?
โ€“ Some of the transitions were cheesy.
โ€“ I would prefer it if it was shot.
Peer Feedback Summary
โ€ข What do you agree with from your peer
feedback?
โ€“ "the woman on the cliff is too big to be stood on that
small cliff" - Unfortunately I couldn't find a picture of a
cliff to the correct scale โ€“ that'd fit the idea I had
hoped to achieve, instead I had to the best I could
with what little I had.
โ€ข What do you disagree with from your peer
feedback?
โ€“ "Some of the transitions were cheesy" - Personally I
like the constant flow that the entire piece contains...
Peer Feedback Summary
โ€ข If I had more time to produce this product, I would try and attempt
to make the pictures look more 3D, whilst making the transitions
and movement look more natural. As this would give the product a
less flat look. On top of this, by using 3D, I wouldn't have to try and
simulate 3D โ€“ making the work somewhat easier in some aspect.
โ€ข Again โ€“ if I were to this again, I would maybe take pictures โ€“ instead
of trying to photoshop a piece together โ€“ as this would help the
scaling of the piece be more accurate โ€“ put as one of the floors on
"Feedback 3." Or I could use someone โ€“ to later be replaced โ€“ as
reference to post compositing.
โ€ข Next time, I'd make the piece animated โ€“ such as the skull with
eyes, in which I could make the eyes blink โ€“ adding more life to the
piece โ€“ as suggested in "Feedback 1."

7. fmp evaluation

  • 3. Research To conduct my research, I researched three products of choice (for each product's medium โ€“ a poster, a title sequence โ€“ although I also created six timecards/segments for the title sequence,) โ€“ the first two were post-1990, whilst the other was pre-1990 โ€“ thus providing us with a deeper depth into the research of each product โ€“ on how the mediums developed over the years (-in terms of style, layout, characters, ect...) Which helps me by giving me an example of structure/layout and how I could apply in the all the used mediums (a poster and a title sequence. On top of this, with a wider range of research, I have a larger chance/ opportunities for inspiration.... Furthermore, to help me understand my audience better (as it would help me to understand โ€“ how I could appeal to my audience more โ€“ as the more my product appeals to an audience, the better my product will do-) I did questionnaire and got people both and out of my class (however to people round college-) to answer it. I used question such as "what is your gender" and "what is your age" to understand my audiences statistics for age and gender, whilst asking questions like "what colours do you associate with communism" - to get the audience common associations. By handing to these people (from around college,) I'll reaching out to the audience closer to the psychographic primary age range. Furthermore, to help me fix my psychographic to suit my audience better, I provided questions about the audience personally. I have however also included questions on a the audience's expectation, opinions and ideas of the turn out of my product. With the surveys โ€“ though can be very helpful on gathering information, as well as details on your audience - to help my psychographic, whilst being able to gather there options and thoughts on certain topics โ€“ if the questions are worded correctly... However, the survey is to still be answered by a group of people - in which we used a minimum of 5 people, who will most likely put shortened answers โ€“as they aren't that motivated towards doing this. Some people may also obscure a silly answers โ€“ such as, "unneeded violence and orphanages burning." The qualitive properties of the products I researched was to a high standard โ€“ as I only chose to look at professional and/or officially used products โ€“ meaning it has to be of a high quality. On top of this, I looked at a high quantitative range of products โ€“ to allow me a broader range of posters and titles sequences to look at...
  • 4. Research Strengths: โ€ข With my research I did two post-1990 and one pre-1990 example โ€“ for each of the mediums โ€“ this providing me with a balanced results in researched mediums... โ€“ By researching both mediums I get broader sense of each of the mediums โ€“ because both mediums are explored you'll show a more balanced confidence in the two mediums, whilst also, bringing your grade up by showing a stronger understanding in the two mediums... โ€ข Because I did one pre-1990 (on top of the two post-1990,) I have a more in-depth look into posters and how they evolved over the years โ€“ and I can pick out older design choices (as well as the newer one,) if preferred - thus giving me a broader set of inspiration. โ€“ For example, with the limitations I'm facing in my final major project (-such as time and with my skills still developing,) I had to look for something that would be easier to do or something less complicated to do โ€“ as with the technological advancements of time, things that would have been harder to do in the past is now easier to do... e.g. by looking at something that's old but still holds up - I'd be looking at something more in my skill range.... โ€“ With the James bond title sequence, they use a lot of moving images and footage โ€“ composed together to form their title sequence, - this being a much easier effect to achieve, compared to Mad Men title sequence โ€“ in which I'd have to animated a character and background (using to different styles and animation,) then successfully compose these two things together โ€“ all whilst trying to keep the product smooth โ€“ e.g. with time things have become more complicated. For my final product I went for a similar style, where I moved images to compose the sequence together (much like the bod sequence..) โ€ข Because targeting my audience is important for this industry (as it can affect how well a show does and makes.) In order to do this, I need to gain a broader understanding of my audience โ€“ to do this I did interview โ€“ asking question to support and create my psychographic, as well as, asking questions to include thing that would appeal to the audience more.
  • 5. Research Weaknesses: โ€ข When trying to research a product, you're limited to what you find on the internet and you have to know what you're looking for as google requires you to be more specific when you search for something โ€“ in terms of the outcome of results... โ€“ You have to know what you're looking for โ€“ before you can search it onto google. โ€“ Even you know what you're looking for there's no guarantee you'll be able to find it, and even if you do find it (or something close,) it could be to too smaller resolution or it could be a stock image that requires a payment โ€“ otherwise it's left with a water mark โ€“ however that may be possible to fix using the "Spot Healing Brush Tool" to cover the watermark up โ€“ if lucky. โ€ข With the survey's some of the responses, not everyone took it serious and I had found that either the answers used were either blunt or silly โ€“ as nobody is forced to provide detailed responses or take it serious โ€“ it's often found that it's not done to a high standard... โ€“ With nobody (who's answering the questionnaire, not being forced to answer the questions to the best of their abilities โ€“ answering it more because they've been told to, so they're answers are unmotivated and bored... โ€ข Again, with the survey's, if you ask for detailed responses (e.g. comment boxes,) can't be put into statistical data - so it because a choice for either a detailed response and loose the statistical data or have the statistical data and loose the detail.... โ€“ As they're open thoughts and opinions โ€“ they can't be put into a format that can be turned into a date โ€“ e.g. tick boxes, check boxes, ect... However, because the audience member will input an open answer, I'll have to use a comment box...
  • 6. Planning For my planning we started of by planning three main ideas in (bubble.us - a mind map website,) two alternate ideas and one main (selected) idea (more in-depth other than other two.) Followed by talking through the strengths and weaknesses of the chosen idea's (-so far from the mind map,) - picking out points for both mediums. Also โ€“ on top of my research, I looked at more products (in less detail,) on a broader range of chosen products โ€“ e.g. a mood board. To do this I chose twelve title sequences to look at, whilst looking at sixteen posters โ€“ always conducting both research and planning into two โ€“ one for the medium of posters and the other for the title sequences. Finally, I produced a physiographic and thought about how I can make my product to fit it โ€“ in terms of colour schemes, images, running themes and genre...
  • 7. Planning Strengths: โ€ข By doing planning, I can receive a strong product that appeals to the audience better, as well as it can provide a stronger consistency to product with a bigger depth to it... โ€“ Using mind maps to plan โ€“ you can explore a strong amount of ideas and see what does and what doesn't work โ€“ if not as well. This allowing me to make sure I've included stronger ideas into my final product. โ€“ By filling out the required planning โ€“ this makes you think the product over and potentially encouraging you to expand on the ideas โ€“ to give it some depth. โ€ข As you've planned everything out already, I already know what to do โ€“ because I've already got everything down and documented, I don't have to stop and constantly try and think of what I was doing, I can just refer back to my planning... โ€ข Doing research on existing products. โ€“ By doing research โ€“ this pushes me to go out (onto the internet,) and find existing products โ€“ products that could inspire me through tones, styles, layout, colour schemes, ect. An example of this one of the Luther posters, in which quite heavily inspired part my original layout plan for my poster โ€“ where I was going to fade a scene into the main character's lower torso; whilst also using allot of the layout, with just the main character in the foreground, with a textured background โ€“ allot of which made it through to my final product. Weaknesses: โ€ข Because everything's already written down and planned out, this may encourage limitations on creativity and experimentations โ€“ when it comes to production. โ€“ As you already have everything planned out, you're more likely to follow the planning as a strict set of to dos โ€“ than a guideline for a product. โ€ข Doing research on existing products. โ€“ By looking at other people's products, I'm likely to become attached to a concept โ€“ so much so, that I create a parody of the original โ€“ only to fit my product's theme. E.g. this can de-encourage creativity โ€“ as I've already got a plan to copy...
  • 8. Time Management Strength: โ€ข I took a lot of my work home and finished and worked on a lot of it in my own time โ€“ as well as at college. โ€“ To keep up with the smaller deadlines, what work I didn't finished in college, I took home to complete โ€“ to ensure I wouldn't fall behind as done previously. โ€ข I prioritise my work โ€“ based on what recourses I had. โ€“ At college, because they had Photoshop on the computers โ€“ rather than at home in which I had no editing software, I prioritised my work that photoshop to college โ€“ whilst doing the rest either at college (if I had some time to do so,) or mainly at home โ€“ as to not waist time. Weakness: โ€ข Furthermore, when it came to handing work in on time, I struggled with the balance of keeping the quality of my work to a higher standard and time โ€“ to overcome this I left allot of work to come back to... โ€“ To get around this I got my work to a pass standard โ€“ before boosting the grade to a much higher standard โ€“ thus ensuring at the least I passed.
  • 9. Technical Qualities Similarities - โ€ข It includes the main character in the foreground of the poster. โ€ข It uses a blue background, with faded images across is it โ€“ images that link to the series. โ€ข It uses big and bold logo in the centre of the page (however much further down the page.) Differences - โ€ข They use two of the character โ€“ rather than using just the one, whilst revealing more of them โ€“ e.g. like pulling the camera out more. โ€ข In this product they also use a lighter tone โ€“ apposed to the darker and more shadowed product I produced. โ€ข The feel of the product is allot less gritty than mine โ€“ using softer texture โ€“ apposed to the rougher ones that I use. On top of that, for the background I went for allot more a street feeling background โ€“ in which I used a broken brick work and concrete wall. Audience Appeal: โ€ข It uses a colour scheme โ€“ putting emphasis on the blue tones and colours. โ€ข The logo being big and bold โ€“ brings the audience's attention to what the text says - "Sherlock." โ€ข It uses the background to tease the audience of the series contents โ€“ both giving them an incite and leaving them to inquire to the context of it.
  • 10. Technical Qualities Link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Be56k1Ui2Yg Similarities - โ€ข Both products use a consistent font style, whilst also using a rough and grimy theme for the text. โ€ข They use visuals for the character in the title sequence, paring with the actors name/credit. Furthermore, they use each of these shots to help sum up them as simply and quickly as possible. โ€ข The colours used in the title sequence are lowly saturated and for the best part drained of colour โ€“ if not black and white, with an applied colour wash. Differences - โ€ข Unlike my product, this product uses a dark and heavy song to play in background of there โ€“ however still using the song to a somewhat of a link to the time of the product. โ€ข The tone in this is much darker (than that of mine,) with much stronger contrast. Audience Appeal: โ€ข They use some strong imagery โ€“ that links to the series and it's characters. โ€ข It matches some of the visuals to the beat of the theme song โ€“ leaving the product with quite a satisfying result...
  • 11. Aesthetic Qualities Strengths: โ€ข I like the concept that I've used for the tile sequence โ€“ as it gives a incite into the times (the 60s,) and London โ€“ using the backgrounds; whilst also blending in the communism vs capitalism theme's (of the time,) into the sequence โ€“ through colour schemes (capitalisms โ€“ blue and white, communism โ€“ red and yellow. โ€ข I've included some subtle hints within the poster โ€“ like the connection between the main character and the Russian cold war spy (the girl in the picture, in his top pocket,) the hints to the times and the cold war. โ€ข I've used a successful range of techniques to piece together an authentic looking (photoshoped) picture. Weaknesses: โ€ข Some of the transition didn't work out fully how I had hoped, however due to the limitations of time and the computer I was left to work on at home - as it wasn't a very strong computer and couldn't handle all the work I gave it. โ€ข For the poster, the shading on the hand (as they were photoshopped on,) were too dark โ€“ in comparison to the rest of the character. โ€ข Furthermore, with the poster the background and character appear quite separate โ€“ e.g. they don't blend together as we as hoped.
  • 12. Aesthetic Qualities Logo: for the logo, I used a bold and basic font โ€“ leaving it easy to read; with a metallically applied texture; as well as overlaying that with a image of clouds, leaving with a blue wash in bunches/patches - reminding the audience of cold factor of the title, whilst keeping a grime element to it (as blue is a typical colour used for gritty dramas;) finally I used an "inner glow," applying bigger depth to the text โ€“ preventing it from looking like the texture was just cut out, into the shape of the text, - It also keeps the poster to a similar style as the title, as it uses the same kind of text, just an alternative font... Background: To help consistency between my two products (my poster and title sequence,) I used the same background design (as well as the logo โ€“ as that's crucially needs to be consistent โ€“ when used,) re- applying the texture in the background, along with the ghosted images โ€“ which both keep the constancy to the poster and creates a style for the series โ€“ through use of patterns , as well as maintaining the use of the original effect โ€“ using these images to give my audience an idea of the times (1960s.) Furthermore, with the ghosted images โ€“ it removes a little more of the emptiness that the background had. References: Despite this being a fictional series โ€“ that I've made up for my FMP (final major project,) I still like the idea of applying hints to (what would be) the source material. In our main character's pocket, there's a picture of the Russian spy (as it's set in the Cold War,) in whom he grows a connection with โ€“ creating a unique character chemistry (as he's British (who are capitalists,) whilst she's a spy for the Russians (who are communist...) Because he's detective, having her photo in his pocket makes the female character appear more to be suspect or under suspicion of something โ€“ e.g. she's be investigated... - hinting that she's possibly not commonly thought of as a friend?
  • 13. Aesthetic Qualities Ghosted Images: With the background I added ghosted images to show off the times (of the 1960s.) By doing this, I'm informing the audience of the time it's set, whilst I'm giving the a small insight to the time's main events โ€“ such as the cold war (in the upper left,) the cold war (in the lower right) and some further cold war events โ€“ set in America, this time (in the upper right...) Black Tie: by giving the main character a black tie (a tie that would only really be worn for funeral,) I can provide the idea of death (as the show is murder show โ€“ it means people will be dying throughout the series,) - which is important as it gives the audience a good insight into the show and what it's a bout. Furthermore, because the character's wearing the tie, it could imply that he's already prepared for a funeral or he's expecting death โ€“ as death follows are character, like a shadow. Tone: Through increasing the contrast, which makes the shadows stronger - which give the piece a more intimidating appearance. Colour Scheme & Colour: The red and blue colour scheme is used to represent the colours for the cold war โ€“ e.g. blue for capitalism and red for communism - based of the suggestions provided by the responses given by my audience on the questionnaire (- on survey monkey.) As it was perceived by the masses that blue and white were capitalism and red and yellow for communism. On top of this both red and blue are complimentary colours. As well as blue could be related to the sirens on the police cars, whilst the red perceived as blood โ€“ from the bodies. However I have left the main colour as blue throughout the piece as it's quite a typical tone used throughout gritty, crime, dramas. As well as being the colour related to the police and capitalisms โ€“ in which both category's does this character fit into....
  • 14. Aesthetic Qualities Text: for the text I use the actors name, using a fairly bold font and the metallic โ€“ texture and effect the โ€“ the one I used for the logo (only using a different font โ€“ making sure that the text goes together, but there's enough difference to appear more as a logo โ€“ rather than just another piece of text.) Further more the actor's name is in a larger font size to the text above โ€“ meaning the audience know this actor's place in the show, but are more drawn in/captivated by the name below...

The Sun: Because this is a title sequence it's allowed to be quite abstract, through this, I've changed the sun to the sigh for communism (as this shows set in the 1960s, a time where there was a cold war between Russian (who's' communist,) against Britain and America (who were capitalist.) As this character is a Russian spy (as they were often used at the time โ€“ between us and the Russians,) I've visually shown her character using the sun as a sign to her character trait. Colour: Being the communist character show throughout the title sequence, this will be the only slide where the colour red is featured prominently... Costume: Again, to push the time period, I've given the actress a very 60s period look, given her both a typical 60s dress and hair style.
  • 17. Aesthetic Qualities Text: for the text I use the director's name, using a fairly bold font and the metallic โ€“ texture and effect the โ€“ the one I used for the logo (only using a different font โ€“ making sure that the text goes together, but there's enough difference to appear more as a logo โ€“ rather than just another piece of text.) • 18. Text: To help prevent the page feel less empty, I've spread out the text, however keeping small enough to draw more attention to the logo (as the bigger thing are, the more likely we are to look at it โ€“ compared to smaller things.) On top of this I've kept the style of this text, the same as the previous text through the title sequence โ€“ this way it keeps thing more consistent, and thus more professional. Background: To help consistency between my two products (my poster and title sequence,) I kept the background design (as well as the logo โ€“ as that's crucially needs to be consistent โ€“ when used,) re-applying the texture in the background, along with the ghosted images โ€“ which both keep the constancy to the poster and creates a style for the series โ€“ through use of patterns , as well as maintaining the use of the original effect โ€“ using these images to give my audience an idea of the times (1960s.) Furthermore, with the ghosted images โ€“ it removes a little more of the emptiness that the background had.
  • 19. Audience Appeal โ€ข With the tones and colours being more dark and gritty โ€“ it adds a kind of maturity to the products โ€“ in which both my primary ages (16-19) and my secondary ages (20+) โ€“ I'd be appealing to my primary age range through the music used in my title sequence will appeal to them because it's an old pop song (from the 60s,) which will link to the age range of teenagers โ€“ who stereotypically are always listening to music e.g. music would appeal to my primary age range - apposed to a specially composed theme and/or soundtrack would... โ€“ I'd also be appealing to my secondary audience because of the characters of a similar age and maturity. โ€“ To appeal to the male appeal, I use allot of the colour blue โ€“ which is stereotypically associated with the male gender. On top of this, with the looming dark theme of death and murder โ€“ also stereotypically appeals to a male audience - apposed to female in which are stereotypically into lighter hearted things. โ€“ To appeal to the middle class appeal โ€“ the street visuals and rough concrete walls won't seem to far from familiar, along with the money to be able to afford the technology to view the product on. โ€“ To appeal to the psychographic of - "Belongers" as this would be a TV show, this would naturally most likely have a small following of people who tune in to watch the show โ€“ each time it'd be on... โ€“ On top of this, to appeal to the psychographics of - "Type A," I would implement a series of moral based themes โ€“ into the show; whilst being set into the 60s โ€“ a time of peace โ€“ which would also be quite appealing to them, as this psychographic worries about there effect on the world...
  • 21. Feedback 1 โ€ข What did you like about the product? โ€“ The videos was great it felt as if it was fluid and had good music for the time period I also like how it simply runs into the next image. The Poster was good as it looks as if it has a strong design to it. โ€ข What improvements could have been made to the product? โ€“ When it comes down to the poster if you made the background a bit darker and add some gaussian blur, I would also say the same for some of the parts of the video such as the second part of the video and also when it comes down to the skull try and make the eye lids disappear and then the communist sky maybe if you included and add peach and orange to the sky.
  • 22. Feedback 2 โ€ข What did you like about the product? โ€“ I like the way the text moves in I think its done very well. The transitions between scenes are really good too. โ€ข What improvements could have been made to the product? โ€“ I think some of the scaling could be better such as the woman on the cliff is too big to be stood on that small cliff also some of the characters look weird not being cut out properly with sharp edges
  • 23. Feedback 3 โ€ข What did you like about the product? โ€“ Some of the transitions. โ€“ The imagery in some of the slides. โ€“ The song chosen. โ€“ The colour schemes linking to the poster and last title sequence shot. โ€“ Quality of the images was good and clear. โ€“ Has a consistent theme. โ€ข What improvements could have been made to the product? โ€“ Some of the transitions were cheesy. โ€“ I would prefer it if it was shot.
  • 24. Peer Feedback Summary โ€ข What do you agree with from your peer feedback? โ€“ "the woman on the cliff is too big to be stood on that small cliff" - Unfortunately I couldn't find a picture of a cliff to the correct scale โ€“ that'd fit the idea I had hoped to achieve, instead I had to the best I could with what little I had. โ€ข What do you disagree with from your peer feedback? โ€“ "Some of the transitions were cheesy" - Personally I like the constant flow that the entire piece contains...
  • 25. Peer Feedback Summary โ€ข If I had more time to produce this product, I would try and attempt to make the pictures look more 3D, whilst making the transitions and movement look more natural. As this would give the product a less flat look. On top of this, by using 3D, I wouldn't have to try and simulate 3D โ€“ making the work somewhat easier in some aspect. โ€ข Again โ€“ if I were to this again, I would maybe take pictures โ€“ instead of trying to photoshop a piece together โ€“ as this would help the scaling of the piece be more accurate โ€“ put as one of the floors on "Feedback 3." Or I could use someone โ€“ to later be replaced โ€“ as reference to post compositing. โ€ข Next time, I'd make the piece animated โ€“ such as the skull with eyes, in which I could make the eyes blink โ€“ adding more life to the piece โ€“ as suggested in "Feedback 1."
