3. Initial planning and idea generation
Moodboards and initial ideas-
At the start of the project I had a clear concept for what I wanted to do and I think this meant I was really
thorough with my modboards and inspirations because I already had ideas for deigns and ethos for my
product so my moodboards were really specific. I made several moodboards for different things, one for
colour, one for shapes and another for font and one for existing products too. I found this really helped
my organise my ideas and narrow down my styles and inspirations. I think this gave me a strong start to
the project and was really helpful to refer back to throughout the last few weeks. Looking back on my
moodboards now, they donât massively reflect the products ive created but they were a really good tool
when developing my ideas and designs.
Proposal-
I think my proposal was strong and detailed. I think I explained my ideas clearly and I thought about how the
skills I would need and what I had learnt from other previous projects that I could use to help me in my
fmp. I created a detailed schedule of all tasks I needed to do in each week and tried to plan my time
strategically. I'm disappointed that my original plan to do an advert wasnât possible but I think I bit off
more than I could chew with this project so that schedule wasnât particularly helpful leading up to
production as I was planning on filming an advert.
4. Research: existing products
⢠Because my project is quite broad, I had to research lots of different elements. I started by
researching big brands/companies similar to the one I was going to create. I looked at oatly
and alpro. Both big dairy free milk brands. I found researching oatly really helpful as it gave
me a a great insight into my market, who and how to appeal to the right audience. I also
looked at cocacola, ore specifically at their poster ads and I found they helped me a lot with
developing my posters, using the correct language, imagery and linking my posters together
with themes, layouts and social media. I also broke down a fairtrade poster and did a more
detailed analysis which gave me a better understanding of the significance of each thing on
my poster. This helped me evaluate my posters as I went so I could develop them so they
would be as affective as possible.
⢠I think one of the weaknesses of my research was how much time I spent on it leaving me
with less production time.
Overall I think my existing brands research was really thorough and really
helpful in giving me inspiration on how to make my company appear
unique and professional. However I think if I had more time or was to do it
again it would have been better to research existing chocolate brands so it
was more specific and targeted and it might of helped me more when it
came to the creation of my products and posters. I feel like better
knowledge of competing chocolate brands on the market, especially
vegan/organic etc would have given me more perspective and perhaps
more insight into how to create a successful brand, product and adverts.
5. research: designs
⢠I did three really detailed slides on existing chocolate bars and their designs. I was really proud of how
much written work I did about this specific part of my project and it gave me a lot of clarity when it
came to designing. I spent a lot of time experimenting with different ideas (practical
research/experiments) before I did this research and then decided that it would be best to focus more
specifically on the design aspect and see how other brands have decorated their packaging. It opened
me up to lots of new ideas and allowed me to become better at critiquing my own work and build a
better understanding of what works on a wrapper and what doesnât and why. I think if I hadn't done this
research in addition to my other research, I would of struggled to create a decent design that I was
happy with.
⢠I think what made this research even better is that I chose a wide variety of differently designed
wrappers and then I compared the different chocolate bars to each other, picking each one apart, seeing
any reoccurring patterns in the deigns and layouts.
⢠I would struggle to find any specific weaknesses with this research as I think it was really strong and
really helpful, especially during production. I think the one way I could improve that stands out to me, is
to research ones similar to what I was creating. So a brand that had a similar ethos, that was vegan etc.
to see how they had presented their products and reflected the values and ethics behind them.
6. research: audience & subject
⢠I think overall my audience research varied in quality. I think my primary audience research was the strongest. I sent
out questionnaires to people I knew that were my target audience and asked specific questions about what they look
for in a chocolate bar, about how much they would spend and why they might choose/not choose my product. The
feedback I got was actually really helpful, I found that it allowed me to build a better structure for my brand and focus
specifically on certain values as selling points. I think it meant that I changed my perspective of my brand and then saw
it more as a âsupport the cause we stand forâ rather than âbuy this chocolate bar because its veganâ. It meant I thought
much more in depth about my whole project and it inspired me to then take it on from a more political point of view
thatâs also important to me. A lot of people said that itâs a crowded market, what will make mine stand out among big
brands that are cheaper, what makes mine unique and worth a little bit more money. I really took all these responses
on board and developed my idea into a much stronger product and was able to expand it creating websites and social
medias.
⢠I think as well as this, hearing the opinions of potential buyers/supporters of my brand gave me a clearer picture of
how to appeal to them and what they value higher than other elements. I think to make this research stronger I should
of asked more questions so I could build up an even better target audience profile.
⢠I think I struggled with my secondary research and it was quite rushed so it wasnât very detailer or high quality. I think I
was confused about what I could find that was secondary for my project as it was so specific so this area of research
was more general and vague. If I was to improve it I would try to find better more detailed sources that I could actually
use to help me in my project.
⢠I think I had the same issue with my subject research, I was creating so many different things that came under so many
different subjects that it was hard to target that
research but I found out about advertising
techniques and how to structure my
posters. Although it wasnât
massively detailed, it was still helpful
during production. To improve this research,
I should of done more in depth research
and on more topics.
7. Practical research
⢠I think my practical research was really thorough and I showed
really clear development. I think I experimented a lot but it was
really helpful in generating a successful outcome. I think one of
the key strengths is that I tried out lots of different ideas and
evaluated them and developed them as I went and I showed that
really well. I think a weakness to my experiments is I only
experimented with my deigns not my posters of anything else so
this meant later in production I struggled much more with making
my adverts because I hadn't done any practice and only had one
design plan to follow. I think this therefore led to this part of my
production being much weaker.
⢠to make my practical experiments better, I should of tried out
new techniques and ideas for things other than my design so I was
more confident and knew what I was doing when I went into
production.
8. Planning (pre-production)
⢠I think my pre planning was good but not massively detailed as
by that point I knew what I was doing and my projects didnât
require me to do shot lists and book equipment etc, as it was all
done from my desk at a computer. This meant it was fairly
straight forward and it was just narrowing down my final
production plans. I planned most of my designs in my
sketchbook ad scanned them in which was my equivalent of a
style sheet. My plans were really detailed and easy to follow
and when it came to production I always had them in front of
me to refer to. I think it was really good to have that clear vision
of what I was making before I began creating.
⢠I also looked at colour scheme sad made a couple more
moodboards which just help me visualise and build up a nice
aesthetic for my brand.
⢠I think one weakness of my pre-planning was that it was quite
short and there was no details about my social media pages or
website which might have been helpful. If I had more time I
would of included these so I could begin uploading on social
platforms sooner.
9. Time Management
⢠I feel like my time management definitely has not been amazing for this project as
ive been a bit all over the place jumping ahead with some things and then
finishing others later. I think because my project was so complicated it meant more
time was needed for things like research and experiments and less for pre-
planning which wasnât much of an issue as my project was all at college on the
computer and I wasnât filming or anything. I think because of this though, I have
ended up continuing my production to develop my project more and then eaten
into my evaluation time so I probably wont complete it to a high enough quality as
it will be rushed. i really hope I will have everything finished on time but I think if
we had had longer to do the project it would have been much more successful as I
could of put more thought into the smaller details like the flavours of my products
and the posters could of been better with more planning but I just didnât have the
time.i could of also taken more time with my evaluation and production and make
sure they matched the standard of my initial plans and research. I would of also
really of liked to make an advert like I planned originally but it was clear early on I
wasnât going to manage it along side everything else which is a shame.
10. Chocolate bar packaging
I think overall I was really happy with my product design. I think the develop process behind it was so
long and frustrating but helped me build up a a really nice looking deign. I think it definitely has really
good aesthetical qualities. I love the colours on the designs, I think they all compliment each other really
nicely and gave me an easy way to create a range of products using different colour schemes reflecting
the flavours I chose. I think the deign of my range of chocolate bars is really consistant and I really like
how u used my original 3 bars to create a limited edition bar. I swapped leaves for chillies and used
contours to make the trees and chillies raised and glossy.
The one thing is dislike about my chocolate bars is the fonts and the names of the flavours. The names
are really boring and donât reflect the individuality and unique ethos of my brand. So I think if I had
more time I would of gone back and changed the names and the fonts.
The alternative names I would of chosen:
Chilli - chilli fusion
Orange - Tangy orange
Original â plain & simple
Forest fruits - dark forest fruits
Overall I think my products were
strong and aesthetically pleasing as
well as appealing to my target
audience with the use of trees and
leaves to reflect thee use of natural
planet friendly materials and
ingreedients. I think itâs a unique
design and would be eye catching
to the specific target market.
11. Logo/ brand
My logo looks okay. I think it is appealing to my target audience which is important and
reflects the brand. From looking at it you can tell its most likely an organic, eco friendly
business due to the name and design but I donât think it looks that good aesthetically. I
donât feel like the colours all work and like it looks really scruffy. I think when trying to
make it look scrap book/ hand drawn style I ended up making a more unprofessional logo. I
think the font I chose for the logo doesnât work with the leaves aw well as I wanted but I
didnât give myself enough time to change it and explore more ideas.
But I think the circle works well because its like the earth and its unique. I feel like with
more time dedicated just to my logo I could of made it look much more professional and
neat.
One thing that really frustrates me is that throughout all my products website etc, the
fonts are really inconsistent so the branding and marketing isnt as strong
because there isnt those really clear links that cocacola have for
example. You cant instantly recognise their brand and adverts
because the designs are so well linked and consistent. I think this
Was a really important aspect of my project that I havent managed
to do so I think it one of the main weaknesses of my brand on a
Whole. I think if I had made more effort to keep things consistent,
My brand would have been much stronger and professional.
12. posters
On a whole I was happy with my posters. I think that my original design was
quite weak but I didnât realise this until I was halfway through making them
and didnât have enough time to do a new plan and a complete redesign.
However, despite my design being flawed, the concept behind it worked, it
had the propaganda feel to it, they looked like posters you would see at a
protest which is what I wanted. I think by the end of the project I realised
what I was trying to sell wasnât the actual product, it was the company, the
ethos and what the brand stood for. By buying this product they are
supporting the enviroment and charities which fro my target audience was
actually more of a selling point than another vegan chocolate bar. I used
hashtags to link them to my social media pages which I think is important
because it engages my audience and encourages them to get involved in
what the company is promoting. I also featured my products I the bottom
right corner as from the poster alone it was unclear what the product was I
was adverting but I think it worked okay and broke up the poster a little bit.
When comparing my two posters, I can see straight away that my tree
poster is much stronger. It uses the rule of thirds, its bold, its clear and it
uses really nice watercolour textures, whereas the sea poster isnt as clear or
as aesthetically pleasing. I donât think the colours stand out as much and I
think it doesnât follow the same design style/ aesthtic as well as the rest of
the products I created.
Despite this, my two posters do link, the fonts are the same on both, the
text is the same on both, the layout is similar, you can tell they were made
to advertise the same thing which I think is important.
13. Social media & website
Social media-
I think my social medias were a really good way to pad out my project and make it
appear more professional. I think it was a good way to further promote my
product/brand and gave me a really nice platform not only to advertise but show more
depth and meaning behind my project and show the political side that originally
motivated me to create this brand with such strong ethical values. I think the way ive
addressed my audience over social media is good, ive targeted my posts specifically to
my target audience and was professional it also casual. To improve my social medias I
would of liked to of used more platforms and posted more. But overall im very happy
with how they turned out.
Website-
I like the aesthetic qualities of my website, I think it looks sleek and professional but
also suits my brand and style. i think my website is well put together and functional, I
found squarespace quite easy to navigate and understand making it easier to make my
website the way I wanted. Im really glad I had time to make the website because I feel
like it really pulls together everything I have done and shows my understanding of the
company ive created and how much thought has gone into the detail. I think my
website does appeal to my target audience but I also feel as though its harder to target
my website as much as other things ive produced. However I talk a lot about the
ethical values etc of my website which will defiantly appeal to my target audience.
I think a weakness of my website is that a lot of the things aren't 100% to scale which
is really frustrating but I cant find a way to make it all seem more even. My hero image
is massive and the writing on it is bigger that the website title which doesnât work at all
when looking at it aesthetically or fit with the rules of visual higherarchy. As well as this
the website doesnât have the same font ive used for any of my products or posters so
its inconsistent but I did try and find the font the most similar to the one I had used.
I would of liked to of spent more time on my website so I could experiment more and
explore other styles and layouts so that it could have been linked more with my
products. But overall I think it looks good, it has information on it, links to social
medias, pictures a shop.
This is the first website I have made so im proud of what ive created, and hopefully if I
had to make a website again in the future I could use the skills ive learnt on this project
to make one even better.
15. Feedback 1
What did you like about the product?
⢠The product packets are very professional
⢠The website, twitter and Instagram look very established
and could be from a real company.
⢠There islots of information thatâs conveyed effectively.
What did you like about the product?
⢠The packet covers at the bottom of the poster things look
out of place, maybe making them sit more flush will help.
16. Feedback 2
⢠what do you like about my project?
⢠what i really love about your project is the overall content and originality
that been put into it, i love how you've designed a product but on different
scales of designs it shows true signs of a professional product. each design
is colourful and eye catching my favourite version of your product is the
chili flavour, i love the design i think its really effective as it really portrays
the feature elements of your design and what the meaning behind it is,
just from your packaging i can see that its organic and all bio degradable
etc. your website works really nicely and is designed nicely to suit all of
the designed products.
⢠what could be improved?
⢠i love your project as it is and you should be really proud as you've really
portrayed all the features that make it a great product on so many
different levels!! if i was to suggest anything it would only to be to get
some of your versions of the product printed to include features of models
possibly holding your product. but i think its really excellent as it is!!
17. Feedback 3
⢠What did you like about the product?
I like the concept behind our idea and how you have structured it. I think the
social media pages are made very well and that they both work effectively and
they look like a professional product
⢠What improvements could have been made to
the product?
i think an improvement would be to actually have on your packaging what the
product is so that it make sit more clear to your audience on what the product is.
I also think it would be good to design a back of the chocolate which says what
ingredients are in the chocolate.
18. Peer Feedback Summary
⢠What do you agree with from your peer
feedback?
â I agree with the coments about my social media and website, I
think they are very professional and im really happy with how
they turned out. I also agree with the comment about having a
design for the back of my chocolate, if I had more time I would
of done this.
⢠What do you disagree with from your peer
feedback?
â I dissagree with the comment about the products looking out of
place on the poster as I think they give more clarification to
what the poster is advertising and featuring the product means
when people see it in shops they will recognise them on shelves
etc.
19. Peer Feedback Summary
Overall I think my feedback was good and most of it I agreed
with. I think that it was helpful in seeing other peoples
perspective to see what ive missed when making my
products. The parts of my project that were seen as the
strongest I also agree with but I do think there was
weaknesses in my posters and flaws I my product design. If I
had given myself more time I could of made a 3d net of my
chocolate bar and printed it and made a physical product
which would have been really nice. But think the strength of
my concept defiantly meant that my website and social
medias were stronger and I think it helped my whole project
come together.
