Pre-Proposal
• I made the pre-proposal just after I had decided what
I was going to make. I think that I should have made it
when I was completely sure what my idea was going
to be. However, I do think that I put a lot of detail into
my pre-proposal, and I am very happy with it.
Although, I think that I could have put more specific
details about what I was going to do into the pre-
proposal, however, my reason for not doing this is
because I was not completely sure what the specifics
of my projects were going to be like at that moment in
time.
Proposal
• The proposal is the start of my FMP project because this is where I put forward all my ideas and
talk about what I am going to do and make. I usually find the proposal straight forward, however, I
usually don't get a very good grade on the proposal because I don't put enough detail in. So, for
my FMP I wrote a lot more in my proposal than I normally would. I wrote down as much as
possibly could for each bit. In the proposal you also must make a bibliography. This is always my
weakest point of any proposal that I make, and I always struggle to reach the minimum sources
that you must have. In this proposal I managed to get ten sources. This took me a very long time
to do, and I would have liked to of have found more. However, I do think that the sources that I did
use were very good for the project that I proposed. I talked about all the different skills that I have
learned throughout college and how they are going to help me in this project. I also talked about
specific areas and how they are going to help the different things that I am going to do. I was
happy with how much detail I put for this; however, I think that I could have put slightly more, and
I think that I could have also referenced different parts of the course too. I also think that I could
have talked more about audience classification in the proposal. The reason that I didn't talk about
this much in my proposal is because I was not sure who my target audience was going to be at this
point, and I think that I should have thought about it more before writing my proposal. I also think
that I could have done the specific weekly planner a lot better. The reason that I didn't do this very
well was because at the time I had not made a specific plan of all my timings, and I thought that I
was going to do it later and I ended up never making it detailed in my proposal and I think that it
would have made my proposal a lot better if I had done this.
Context and Theory
• I was very happy with the amount of detail that I put in my context research. I also
think that I worked hard on it because this took be a very long time to complete
because I had to do a lot of research because I did not know any of these people or
anything about them before starting my research. I also think that I went into a lot of
detail about them all. I think for me to of have been very happy with this, that I could
have done one or two more people on my research. I also think that I could have done
a lot more research on the different types of film and understood them a bit more. This
is because I only have a basic understanding of different types of film, and I think that I
could have spent a lot more time on that when doing my research. I was very happy
with my bibliography as I had alphabetized it. I also think that I got every source that I
used for my research, and I also think that it formatted it correctly. Looking at different
people inside the film industry helped me to understand what is done in specific jobs
and what it is like to work in the industry professionally. Looking at different types of
film theory helped me to learn about different types of film theory and it helped me to
understand what type of film theory I was going to use and how I could make my trailer
to a more professional standard. I think that researching Ken Burns helped me the
most, this is because he views media creation as manipulation and the whole job of it is
it manipulate the audience into feeling a certain way. This made me change the way
that I thought about making my project and helped me think more about how the
audience is going to feel and not what I think is going to be good.
Research - Presentation
• I did a survey for my presentation research which had 19
responses. I think that I would of have liked more people to of
have done it so that I could have got more data, however, there is
nothing that I could of have done at the time to get more people
to answer it. I also think that I could have asked some better and
more specific questions to do with what I am doing. This is
because a lot of my questions were broad media-based questions
and I think that it would have helped me a lot more if I asked more
questions about trailers. A lot of this survey helped me to
understand what my preferred audience which was 16-14 years
old would want from a trailer. For example, I learned their
preferred length when it comes to different things such as
documentaries, films, short films and trailers. This has helped me
because I know what length I am going to make my trailer not to
keep the most people happy and keep their attention in my main
age group of people that I was trying to appeal to.
Research - Video
• I think that the different bits of video that I used for my research were very good as I
think that they were very similar to what I am going to make and a lot of them were the
inspiration for what I made. I also think that I talked a lot about them, and I also think
that the things that I analyzed and talked about them were very useful. However, I think
that I could have talked more about film theory and different filming techniques when
talking about these films and TV shows. The reason that I didn't talk about them a lot is
because I didn't know enough about them, and I think that I could have learned more
about them when I was doing my research on context. I think that it was good that I
talked about the different way that these shows were filmed and the different colour
grading used. This is because I knew a lot about what I was going to do on my project so I
could talk a lot about how it helps me with my project and how it links into what I was
doing. It was also very useful to look at other bits of filming work to see what makes
them all different and how they are all unique. They all have their own styles with their
own colour tints. They also all have different filming styles and the way that the camera
is used. For example, 1917 uses only one camera shot throughout the entire film.
Problem Solving
• I think that my problem solving talked about all the problems that I
might have faced whilst making my FMP. However, whilst making this
I struggled to produce different problems that may occur so, it took
me a long time. I that I could have talked more about the different
problems that the people that I was working with many have also had
and how that would have impacted my project. I also felt as though it
was lacking in detail, however, I was not sure where and I didn't feel
as though I could have added any more detail. I think that I would like
to of have learned how to make my problem solving better in the
future as I think that it overlooked some things, but I am also not sure
what.
Planning
• Planning was what helped me narrow down my idea to exactly what I was going to do
and exactly how each shot was going to be. I did find this process hard because doing
this project was not my first choice and I was going to make a documentary that I had
already planned out in specific details, but I could not do due to Covid-19. The planning
did help me get to my final product because if I did not plan then I don't think that the
trailer would have made any sense and I would not have known what I would be filming.
I had many things from my planning to help me in production. For example, I had
storyboards, scripts and shot lists. I did use the shot list the most to know what shots I
had to take and what angles so that I already had it all planned out and I didn't have to
decide which camera angles would have been best on the day which would have
massively slowed down my production. My planning also helped me narrow down to
what name I was going to use for my project, because before planning I did not know
what I was going to name it. Furthermore, I planned what I was going to do in
postproduction. For example, what colour grading I was going to use and why and what
music and I was going to use and why I had chosen it. I also got to plan what equipment I
was going to use so that I didn't have to decide on the day of production and take lots of
thing that I was not going to use. My health and safety planning also made sure that I
knew what to do if anyone got hurt and helped me make sure that nobody gets hurt.
Trailer (aesthetic qualities)
• I think that my trailer had good aesthetic qualities in some areas, and some areas
where I didn’t achieve what I wanted to. I wanted to make most of my trailer
have a dark theme. To achieve this I was going to use LED filming lights, however,
I did not have access to these at the time of filming and ended up having to use
natural lightning. A lot of my shots were by a window so I could use a lot of
natural lighting at the start of my trailer. However, towards the middle part of the
trailer I had to use lighting in my house since I was not near a window and I don’t
think that the dark theme that I wanted was in the middle of the trailer. Although,
towards the end of the trailer I was able to colour grade and colour correct the
footage to make it return to the dark theme that I wanted. I also found some bits
of footage hard to focus. I was using manual focus because the auto focus on my
camera isn’t very good, so I had to move the focus ring whilst moving the camera
which means that little bits of some shots are in focus on what they shouldn’t be.
However. I still think that most of my trailer was filmed how I wanted it to be.
Trailer (technical qualities)
• I think that my trailer has a lot of technical qualities. The reason that
my trailer had a lot of technical qualities was because there was a lot
of things that I had to show about a film in a short period of time and
to do this effectively a lot of techniques have to be used. I showed the
three main areas of the film in the trailer, that being, the aftermath,
the climax and the conclusion. I did this so that people who watch the
trailer will understand what the film is about and why they should
watch it. I also used a lot of moving camera shots to make it look like
something is progressing. I think that it went well because it looked
how I planned for it to look.
Time management
• I think that my time management could have been a lot better. The
reason that I was not able to stick to the time management that I
wanted was due to a lot of unforeseen problems that occurred during
my production weeks. I ended up having to do a lot of my filming very
last minute and it ended up being rushed and not as planned as I
would have liked. However, I do think that even though my timing
was much later than I would of liked, I still think that I managed to do
what I planned to do. I think that if I was to do a project like this again
that I would make a new time schedule if my other time schedule got
changed or interrupted.
Problems I had
• Throughout the FMP process I had a lot of problems that I faced which made it hard for
me to do my production. One of the major problems that I had was that I had an idea
that I had planned very in depth and put a lot of time into and last minute I had to
change my idea from a documentary to a trailer due to Covid-19 restrictions. Because of
this change I had to redo all my written work but in a much shorter timer period of about
half of what I would normally have. At the same time of his I had to move to a different
house with different people and because of this I could not film with anyone or
anywhere I had to film, and it was very stressful and hard to keep on task with my FMP.
Because of this a lot of my production work was in the last week of production and I
don't feel like my FMP was anywhere near to standard that I wanted it to be. I wanted
my FMP to be to the same standard that my documentary was in the start of my second
year, therefore I originally planed a documentary. Another big issue that I faced was that
my main actor suddenly had a family issue and could no longer be in the production, so I
had to use family members last minute and people that I did not plan on having in the
production. Because of this I feel as though I couldn't stick to my original plans very well.
I think that if I had the chance to re-do my FMP I could achieve a lot more than I have.
Feedback
Person 1
• Positives
• The music fits with the trailer
• The shots are good quality and it’s very nice to look at
• The acting is very good
• Negatives
• The story is a little difficult to follow
• Could have gotten more footage
• Could be longer
Person 2
• Positives
• It tells a story very well
• It’s unpredictable so it keeps you interested
• It’s intriguing that you only see the news readers face
• Negatives
• It’s hard to hear the newsreader over the music
Person 3
• Positives
• Good looking original stock footage
• The camera movement is nice
• Good prop choices
• Negatives
• The music is too loud over the speech
• The news segment is lacking detail
• The keys are confusing
Feedback Summery
• I am very happy with all of the feedback that I have received. This is
because I think that the feedback pointed out everything that I wasn’t
happy with about my project and it also pointed out good things about my
project that I would never have realised if I did not get feedback. I do think
that the audience is not balanced as well as it could be. I think that it was
hard to hear the news reader over the music, however, I tried to fix this in
post but because I had the microphone too far away from the newsreader, I
was not able to turn the volume up without it sounding distorted which is
something that I should of planned for. I also agree and think that I should
of used less bright props that were not supposed to stand out. However, I
disagree that the news segment is lacking detail as it is supposed to he that
way so it does not reveal too much about the plot of the film. I also think
that it is intriguing that you only see the news readers face. I did this on
purpose so that it comes across as a very mysterious and serious film which
seems to have come across like I wanted it to in the trailer.
