Adrenergic-blocking agents bind to adrenergic receptors but inhibit stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system. They are classified by the type of receptor blocked: alpha1, alpha2, beta1-selective, or non-specific beta1 and beta2 blockers. Alpha1 blockers like prazosin and doxazocin are used to treat hypertension and benign prostatic hyperplasia. Beta blockers can be non-specific or beta1-selective. They are used to treat hypertension, angina, heart attacks, arrhythmias, migraines, and other conditions but have contraindications for congestive heart failure, heart block, and bronchial asthma.
