Homeric Gods
Homeric Gods Lecture Summary
The lecture on Homeric gods by Professor Carolyn Anderson provided information about the Odyssey,
ancient Greek culture, and the gods presiding in the culture. During the time period of the ancient
Greeks, much was unexplainable. The numerous gods were a way to explain occurrences and their
religion was a way of regulating the world and having structure, and the gods played a large part in the
Greek culture. The religion was also heavily influenced by narratives about causality such as the
Odyssey and the Iliad. The Odyssey and Iliad are not divine texts, but they are foundational. These
stories originated as oral poetry and to create a fixed text people from all over came together with their
best versions and piece by piece the epic poems were put together. There is a lot of ... Show more

After Zeus came Poseidon, Hades, Helios, and Aphrodite to name a few. Poseidon was the god of the
sea, and Hades was the god of the dead. Then there was Helios who was the god of the sun, and
Aphrodite was the god of love. The gods had to obey the fates, and necessity. They were reflections of
man in the sense that they had good and bad impulses. They could be distracted and hold grudges.
These beings were not what we would expect from divinity now. There were multiple origins of the
gods. Small worship towns had different ideas of what each god was. In one town Artemis, the god of
hunting and the moon, was a virgin to some people, but in other areas she was sexualized. It also was
common for there to be a masculine religion of sky gods, and feminine religion of Earth gods. The
purpose of the gods was to inforce the difference between mortality and immortality. Heroes were
humans that were favored by the gods and some heroes were offered immortality. Many declined
because in the culture the people preferred to live a short heroic honorable life than a long one that

Social Vulnerability In Emergency Management
When a disaster hits an area it does not discriminate on where it hits or who is affected. When it
comes to effective emergency management it is important that managers take into account certain
preimpact conditions in order to properly prepare, mitigate, respond and recover from a disaster
regardless of the magnitude. One preimpact condition that is important to consider is the Social
Vulnerability. Social vulnerability is important because it assesses the resilience of communities and
how disasters or external stressors can impact them (Lindell et al, 2006, pg. 153). It is important for
emergency personnel to understand the social vulnerability of a community in order to alleviate the
amount of human suffering and economic loss that can occur post disaster. In order to determine an
areas social vulnerability the Emergency Management uses a system known as the Social
Vulnerability Index (SVI) for disaster management. The SVI take into account socioeconomic status,
household composition and disability, minority status and language as well as housing and ... Show

SVI also aids Emergency Managers in the response and recovery because based on the known
variables, they are able to plan, train and prepare for the disaster and identify the communities that are
vulnerable and provide the proper assistance. SVI also effectively aids recovery measures as it
identifies the specific areas that will need continued support long after the

Restrictions Of Women In 19th Century Literature
The classic works of Jane Austen, Emily Bronte, and Charlotte Bronte are powerful examples of the
restrictions that women of the 19th century endured. These women collectively penned several of the
most famous novels ever written, subversively authoring their works either anonymously or under
male names, thus allowing their novels to become much more widely read than they would have been.
Emma, by Jane Austen, Wuthering Heights, by Emily Bronte, and Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte, are
all examples of works that call into question traditional roles of gender and social class and prove
themselves to reveal similar themes in structure and style. These novels align themselves similarly
from the very first lines by strongly establishing the tone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While the feeling the reader experiences is quite different than the lighter tone of Emma, the reader
does essentially experience a sense of relief, as they are allowed to immediately understand what type
of work they are journeying into. Although Jane is glad to be spared of a dreary, cold walk in the
winter rain, the first thoughts the reader are exposed to are those of someone who has a mind of her
own, We had been wandering, indeed... (Bronte 372), but also of someone who is isolated and
wounded. The reader can feel that this individual, although young, has a life that is wrought with
tragedy, as she is taunted by John Reed, ...You are a dependent, mama says; you have no money; your
father left you none; you ought to beg, and not to live here with gentlemen s children like us, and eat
the same meals we do, and wear clothes at our mama s expense. Now, I ll teach you... (Bronte 375).
Bronte pulls on the heartstrings of the reader, urging one to find out what will happen to this poor girl,
Jane, as we clearly begin to see who she is in the opening

CRJ 102: Intro to Policing

The Watts Riots The Watts Riots erupted on the backdrop of simmering racial tensions in the United
States. There were many varied long term causes for the eruption of the riot that rocked Watts and the
surrounding areas, but the immediate cause of the riot was routine police work police responding to a
call of a concerned citizen worried about a man driving his car erratically.
The Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, was predominantly black and racial tension had reached a
breaking point when two white policemen stopped, Marquette Frye, a black motorist whom they

the many rebellions to occur in the years that followed in Detroit, Newark, and other American cities
(History.com). In the aftermath of the riot there were three major outcomes. One, the McCone
Commission was set up by the government to study the riots. The McCone Commission found that
people rioted because of unemployment, bad schools and education, and prior instances of police
brutality (www.southcentralhistory.com). A second outcome following was an independent
commission, chaired by former Illinois Gov. Otto Kerner, that investigated the causes of the rioting.
The Kerner Commission issued its landmark report in 1968, concluding: Our nation is moving toward
two societies, one black, one white separate and unequal (www.cnn.com). Another major outcome was
the creation of SWAT teams. They were created with the vision of three police officers: Officer
Nelson, who originally came up with the concept of a specially equipped and highly trained unit,
Inspector Gates, who spear headed the push to make it happen and Ed Davis had the foresight to
approve the program. The term SWAT was coined by Gates and originally stood for

Symbolism In Everything That Rises Must Converge By OConnor
In Everything that Rises Must Converge , it appears to be what is a simple story. It seems that O
Connor has written this story which we can easily read and understand without having any struggle
with abstract religion symbolism. Mrs. Chestny holds a different opinion about it she thinks that all
blacks should rise, but on their own side of the fence. Because she offers a penny to a small black
child, in the point of view of her son she is. With all the humiliation that Julian gets by a child s
mother. Julian says that the black women that hits Mrs. Chestny with her purse represents the whole
colored race which no longer take your condescending pennies. Julian also recognizes that the old
manners are obsolete and also that his mother s graciousness is not worth a damn. As well he who
begins to realize, that as we watch his mother die from the blow that the world is not that simple as we
thought he was. As they say it is not a world in which everything is either black or white. That is when
we realize that Everything that Rises Must Converge is not in its entirely a simple story. In the
characters we Julian who is a recent college graduate and he lives with his mother. As his dream of

Ibsen, Strindberg and Feminism Essay examples
In the late 19th century Naturalism was emerging as the primary movement in literature of that period.
The movement was influenced heavily by the discoveries made in politics, sciences and psychology of
the time. Discoveries such as Darwin s evolutionary theories, Marx s Das Kapital and even Freud s
research on the psychology of the human were creating shock and upset and began to revolutionised
society s outlook on the world. The naturalist movement in literature also coincided with the
beginnings of women s emancipation throughout the western world. Scandinavia, as well as
experiencing The Modern Breakthrough, was also dealing with its own political struggles for national
identity. For Henrik Ibsen and August Strindberg the early woman s ... Show more content on

In an unsigned notice in The Daily News of June 1889 a writer condemns Nora s actions, Deserting
her home, her husband, and above all her children, simply because she finds her husband is angry with
her...it may be confidently asserted that no women who ever breathed would do any such thing (1889).
Clement Scott, editor of Theatre, would not even describe her action as human but a thing that one of
the lower animals would not do (1889a, p. 114) and in an article for The Daily Telegraph even calls
Nora absolutely inhuman (1889b, p. 102). This shock reaction was understandable in a culture that
had defined a women s place in society, or metaphorically, placed women in a box; the fact that Nora
chose to step out of that box was an issue of serious debate. If Nora should desert her place in society
then so could others. However W.E Simonds, having read H.F Lord s translation of A Dolls House,
reprimanded any critic for calling Nora selfish and failing to see Nora s womanliness and emancipated
individuality (1890, p. 147). It is this emancipation of the individual that could be the solution to
discovering a theme beyond Ibsen s feminism. Even Ibsen himself disclaimed any conscious efforts on
his part to write A Doll s House as a way of rallying for the women s rights movement and claimed it
to be purposeful description of humanity (cited in Templeton 1997, p. 110). Templeton goes on to
explain that Ibsen

The Spanish Reconquista
Spain has always been a melting pot of ethnicity and culture. From the Celts and Visigoths that came
from the north to the Africans and Arabs from the south to the Romans from the East, empires,
kingdoms, and tribes all over the world have recognized and tried to take advantage of the benefits of
Spain. War, conquest, and reconquest are frequent throughout the entire history of Spain, and the
history of Moors in Spain is no exception. It began in the year 711 when the Moors first crossed over
to the Iberian Peninsula, until their expulsion from Granada in 1492 which marks the end of the
Reconquista, they influenced the native Iberians in many ways including culture and religion. The
Moors were people of Berber, Black African, and Arab ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Christians and Jews were heavily taxed for the right to practice their own religions. Those who
converted to Islam, however, paid lesser taxes and had more privileges. Around 718, Pelagius, a
Visigoth nobleman, established an independent Christian state in opposition to the Moorish dominance
in Spain. Due to his opposition of Muslim control, Pelagius and a group of 30 some men were exiled
and lived in a cave, refusing to pay taxes and harassing the Moors. Between 718 and 722, Pelagius and
his small band of warriors fought and triumphed against the Moors at the Battle of Covodonga. This is
considered the beginning of the Spanish Reconquista. The Reconquista was a period of around 774
years where the Christian kings reclaimed the Iberian Peninsula from the Islamic Moors. The
Reconquista was not carried out by the Spanish alone, however. King Charlemagne of France
reclaimed the western Pyrenees and formed the Marca Hispanica to defend the border between the
Frankish Kingdom and the Muslims. Christians from all over Europe traveled to the Iberian Peninsula
to participate in the reclaiming of Spain in the name of God. The Reconquista was not all war and
conquest, but also the re population of Christians on the peninsula. As the Berbers abandoned towns
and fortresses, the Christian kings took their people and re inhabited those areas. In some places,
Christian peasants, monks, and nobles were granted lands by their king or lord to

Darcy And Collins Proposal Essay
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in
want of a wife, this quote is the first line of Pride and Prejudice, which also stands as a summary for
the entire plot of the story: marriage. This plot involves many key events, two of the most important
being Darcy s proposal to Elizabeth and Collins proposal to Elizabeth.
Within both proposals, Darcy and Collins are confident that Elizabeth will accept. Mr. Collins is
Elizabeth s cousin who is next in line to receive the Bennet estate. This reason, with the fact that his
patroness, Lady Catherine, wants him to pursue a wife, is why he proposed to Elizabeth, and with the
estate circumstances, why he assumed she would say yes. Darcy s proposal is similar in the way that
he takes into account how the marriage would be of benefit to Elizabeth and her family, financially
and socially. Both Collins and Darcy speak in a way that comes across as arrogance. They both take it
upon themselves to emphasize the benefits marriage to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Darcy s feelings for Elizabeth are authentic and sincere whereas Collins has little to no affection for
Elizabeth whatsoever. During Darcy s proposal, he begins by stating his love for Elizabeth and then
the advantages on her part. He also absurdly states how marrying her is a sacrifice for him because she
is without a fortune and has little meaningful connections. Darcy insults Elizabeth s sister, Jane, as
well as her family. Collin s takes the initiative to state why he is in want of a wife and why he thinks
she would be a suitable match for him. Both men do not even try to compliment and admire her
qualities as a person; instead, both men insult Elizabeth. Though, Darcy does say, I love you, Collins
does not mention having this feeling for Elizabeth. Collins brings up an almost scare tactic in telling
Elizabeth that she might not receive another offer of

Understanding Schizophrenia From The Mind Of A Mental...
Understanding Schizophrenia from the Mind of a Mental Health Victim Themselves
With basic information on what this mental illness is, to understand Schizophrenia further, research
into personal encounters became apparent. After looking into the mind of Ian Chovil who was a victim
of the mental health disease and finding his accounts very eccentric it is clear that this is something
that could quite possibly affect the brains of the people that commit serious crimes in regards to the
Media. Ian says in his story a few things which connect this type of mental health to violent obscure
behaviour. He says he had delusions right from the start which after reading his story states,
progressed from visions of famous persons trying to force him to commit suicide right to the later
stages of his schizophrenia where he says he got a lot of messages from favourite Rock and Rolla
songs, movies, cartoons and library books. Ian doesn t say these forms of media forced him to murder
innocent people but it does provide evidence that he received messages. These messages in the mind
of another schizophrenic could lead to serious acts of violence which leads onto the next part of his
story where he mentions how his delusions changed as aliens instructed him on the real nature of
reality then three things happened as contact with reality became very tenuous, he got into trouble
with the law, became an alcoholic and lost his job. He is now taking instructions from a part of his
mind he perceives

Racism And Discrimination On Tv. Is The American Media
Racism and Discrimination on TV Is the American media racist? Watch American television and you
might think so. It s been over fifty years since the civil rights movement and unfortunately American
television, at times, keeps racism and discrimination alive. Some of America s longest running and
most favorite television shows are riddled with negative stereotypes, hidden prejudices, and outright
discrimination. Even worse, is the commercials that are on everyday television that demoralized and
debase a whole race of people. Sadly, these companies and corporations sometimes don t even realize
that there is anything wrong with what they are showing on television. This shows how sad the state of
our race relations are in this country. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The fact that they used an African American kid for this commercial is highly prejudice. Prejudice is
when a negative attitude is felt against an entire group of people (Schaefer 2015). This advertisement
gives that image that all African Americans are drug dealing monsters. This type of imagery has led to
discrimination against African Americans because they are looked at like they are criminals when that
is not the case. Discrimination is when a group of people is denied the same rights and opportunities
because of prejudice (Schaefer 2015). Something that is disturbing about this advertisement and the
group that was behind making it, Partnership for a drug free America, is that they were funded by over
two hundred major American corporations. These types of images that were played on television and
backed by so many large companies show that institutional discrimination is a problem in this nation.
Institutional discrimination is when a group of people are denied opportunities and their rights are
taken away during the normal operations of society. Lastly, that brings me to my last example of
racism in the media and that is the Willie Horton and the revolving door ads. Willie Horton was a
prisoner in the Massachusetts prison system for murder. In 1986, he was released as part of a weekend
furlough program but did not return and a year later he raped a woman and physically

and most are allies of the United States, while only a very few are sympathetic to terrorism. Ever since
the 9/11 terrorist attack, the United States started being more careful as to who to trust. The United

Half of the Arab Islamic population didn t know about the September 11th attack. Americans still,
blamed the Arab Islamic, while other Americans blamed every Arab Islamic and Germans. The
Americans did indeed go to war with the Germans, Germany in general, and it was very
heartbreaking. I think that the majority of the Germans didn t even want a war to go on against the
United States. Most Americans took the issues and complications, creating anger and hatred towards
the Germans, creating rumors about them who were actually innocent. Both Germans, Arabs and
Islams gone through discrimination after the tragedy. Many Americans who lost their loved ones grew
hatred towards the Germans, Arabs, or Islams. Even though they were innocent, no one seemed to
believe them. Businesses and shops that were owned by the Germans, Arabs, and Islams; were
destroyed or vandalized plenty of times. Everyone around them despised them in one way or the other,
no one ever tried to hear their side of the story. As long as anyone knew, it was either a whole country

The British Aero Engine Manufacturer
Introduction
Rolls Royce Limited is the British aero engine manufacturer. Its main export of jet engines remained
40% of total sales to U.S. market. Due that the global market of the engines was dominated by two
U.S. companies called Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Group and General Electric s aerospace division,
Rolls Royce had to deal with any oversea contracts which were fixed in dollar terms. On the other
hand, Rolls Royce s operating costs were arisen in sterling. Therefore, Rolls Royce had to price its
products in U.S. dollar and calculate its cost in GBP. Unfortunately a continued weakness of the U.S.
dollar resulted that Rolls Royce suffered a heavy loss of their profit from its annual report in 1979.
Besides, the company won some engine contracts in 1978 and 1979, but no doubt they were priced in
U.S. dollar. Hence, under the market condition, whether U.S. dollar was depreciation or appreciation,
it would dramatically affect Rolls Royce s profit in certain period of time.
1. Key factors about the economic impact of exchange rate fluctuation
Under a stronger value currency, a country s export goods will become more expensive, but its import
goods will be cheaper when trading in domestic markets. In contrast, under a weaker value currency,
the goods which are exported will become cheaper, and the goods imported will be expensive. From
the case, as the British aero engine manufacturer, Rolls Royce does business with American air
frames. Due that U.S. dominance in civil

Ethos Pathos Logos Disadvantages
Ethos and pathos are rhetorical techniques Knopf uses to successfully deliver his argument. Knopf
effectively uses ethos to prove to the reader the credibility of his piece. One way Knopf goes about
doing this is he uses several creditable sources to back up his points. These sources include, Unites
States Department of Agriculture, Working Group s Farm Subsidies Database, and the New York
Times. By using a variety of different sources, Knopf is able to enhance his paper. Pathos is used when
Knopf mentions the extra seventy calories associated with whole milk and the disadvantages that
come from those extra calories. Knopf implores these extra calories are linked to heart disease and
obesity (Knopf). The majority of people reading this essay might be able to relate to that quote in one
way or another. The reader might know someone who is suffering from these diseases or they could
potentially have the diseases. Another example of pathos used would be when Knopf discusses the
effect cows have on the environment. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Discussing the benefits and disadvantages gives the reader background knowledge so they can see for
themselves the actual nutritional value of milk. In Knopf s essay, he compares skim milk to whole
milk. One cup of whole milk, according to the Web site, contains 70 more calories than a cup of skim
milk (Knopf). In todays society, many people are concerned with health and weight gain. Seventy
calories might seem like a large number to people who are trying to loose weight. By distinguishing
between the two milks, Knopf suggests milk can be both healthy and unhealthy. Knopf also discusses
how fat from whole milk is used to created other common dairy products. This fact might not be
known to the reader which can be an advantage because it could potentially cause the reader to think
about the dairy products they use and realize what they are made

Comparing Mother Of The Groom And To A Daughter Leaving Home
Mother of the Groom and To a Daughter Leaving Home Ricki Lake once said, Motherhood is the
greatest thing and the hardest thing. A mother giving birth to her child is the greatest thing. A mother
letting go of her child is the hardest thing. In the two poems, Mother of the Groom by Seamus Heany
and To a Daughter Leaving Home by Linda Pastan, the readers are able to understand the emotions of
how a mother feels for either her daughter or son leaving. Seamus Heany wrote the poem, Mother of
the Groom in 1966. This poem is about the grief and sorrow a mother encounters when her son is
getting married. It s like she s losing her son to marriage. The tone throughout the poem explains how
the mother does not want the son to leave her. Linda Pastan wrote, To a Daughter Leaving Home in
1988. This poem was bittersweet and emotional. The poem starts off by teaching the daughter how to
ride a bike and then it discusses watching the daughter ride off. Both poems show love and affection
towards children. They both inspire parents to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although both poets wrote about the poems in their own figurative language and drew a picture for us
in our heads, Pastan s poem was far more descriptive and relatable. One of the main reasons why
Pastan s poem was more relatable than Heany s was because it was in first person. Having the poem in
first person pulls in reader s heartstrings, and it organizes/structures the poem better. The reader is able
to feel the sadness and the pleasure a parent feels when their child grows up. Letting go of something
that s very close to a person s heart is the hardest thing a human can encounter. Children are with their
mothers from the beginning, not from birth, but from the moment they begin to develop in the
stomach. A mother has an attachment for the child, and it s hard to let go for

The Secretary Chant
In this poem Marge Piercy s speaker evokes a concrete vision of a woman who has lost her personal
identity to her job. Her bold and descriptive use of metaphors allow the reader to envision a woman
who is living her life vicariously through her career. Ms. Piercy successfully uses paradox,
personification, and the pun to bring the character alive. With the use of metaphors, both implied and
explicit, the reader can deeply empathize with the central character of this poem.
From the first line of the poem the tone is set for the reader. It is not so vague as to use a simple
simile, but a strong manifestation of the idea of the speaker as an actual personification of a material
object. She does not say My hips are like a desk , she says ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Often times the secretary or office assistant are seen as nothing more than robotic extensions
completely devoid of human qualities. Press my fingers (11) is an instruction to her boss explaining
exactly how she is to provide a function as if she was explaining how to operate any other piece of
office equipment. Like any secretary she would have to organize an office and explain to her boss
where things were to be found when she was out of the office. From my mouth issue canceled reams
(16).
She is clearly telling her boss where he would find the used paper and closed files but the pun
intended is that whatever she tells her boss is ignored anyway.
By the time the reader gets to the end of the poem the secretary is fully developed as an inanimate
machine, Swollen, heavy (17). She has given up trying to be human and has resigned herself to the
fact that she has been taken over completely by the machines that surround her. Metaphorically
speaking, with the use of metonymy, the secretary, now as a machine herself is about to be delivered /
of a baby Xerox machine (18 20), thus perpetuating a species of human machines.

Research on the Microbiological Hazard of Linens
Executive summary Linen that has been used is a source of healthcare associated infection and is
considered to be contaminated and contain microbes that continue to survive or even multiply if not
laundered according to required standard . The transfer of micro organisms can take place through
contact from linen to patients, clients, staff so all stages of linen management must be considered. It
includes storage, handling, bagging, transportation and laundering .To reduce the microbiological
hazard for those who handle soiled and infected linen control measures are necessary. The aim of this
study is to ascertain whether linens are correctly categorized, segregated and laundered to prevent the
risk of infection to patients and healthcare staff . Introduction The term hospital linen includes all
linen used in the hospital. It includes mattress, pillow covers, blankets, bed sheets, towels, curtains,
doctors coats. All linen used by patient that have been soiled with blood, body fluids, secretions, and
excretions should be handled using appropriate precautions. The risk of cross infection can be
eliminated if appropriate precautions are followed by care givers for the handling, collecting,
transporting .The hospital receives all these materials from different areas like Operation Theatre,
wards, Icu etc. The OT linen need special care as it has to be washed sterilized carefully.

In 2014, 702,000 children were victims of child maltreatment ( Child Abuse ) with the number rising
each year. Over time, the abuse Hansel and Gretel faced allowed them to become the symbol of the
Hansel and Gretel Foundation, the haven for abused children (Lecture Notes, 4/13/17). However, even
after the neglect and abuse from the step mother and witch, Hansel and Gretel continued to hope that
the situation would get better; it is the same hope that abused children today need to hold onto so they
do not become part of the health related statics, like substance abuse and suicide ( Child Abuse ). After
reading Hansel and Gretel, abused children can try to find their own hope to pull themselves out of the
hole their witch put them in. As Hansel and Gretel hold onto the hope of being happy with their
sibling and father, abused children can hope to have a fairy tale like family, thus making the influence

School Dropout s Rates From City
All these is done to convince the readers that millions of children are out of school in Pakistan. The
readers feels sympathetic a lot about these issue Basically, Azam attributes poor government plans,
lack of resources, poor education schemes and poor planning to this menace of poor enrolment and
absence of learners from. The author of this article employs the use of some reasons and logic appeals
in an attempt to lure the audience to read the article and identify with it. For instance, it was show that
the rate of enrolled children from Grade one to five maximum, but the retention rate is only 67%.
Also, the primary enrollment is 58% in Pakistan and the target of 100%. There are example that show
the logic of low enrolment. There are different between school dropout s rates from city to other. For
example, Balochi stanand Sindh are highest population of school dropout s children, the rates about
66% of children in Balochistanand 51% in Sindh are not in school, however, Punjaband K P show low
rates of dropout s children by 47% and 34% children out of school. Lastly, inthe Federally
Administered Tribal regions (FATA), 62% are not in school, in Gilgit Baltistan 48% not in school. And
about 43% of same kids live in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
The use of tables and pictures also act as another appeal in this article. In this case, Azam uses a chart
to indicate the rate of literacy in Pakistan and also the rate of primary school enrolment in the same
country (Azam).

What Is A Star Essay
Intro
A star is a ball of gasses that gives off a tremendous amount of electromagnetic energy. This energy
comes from the nuclear fusion within the star. Nuclear fusion is a combination of light atomic nuclei
to form heavier atomic nuclei. Most stars in the night sky appear to be tiny specks of white light. If
you look closer to the stars, it won t appear white.Stars vary in color, for example, the star Canopus
shines yellowish white.
Analyzing Starlight Astronomers learn about stars primarily by analyzing the light that the stars emit.
They direct sunlight through spectrographs, which are devices that separate light into different colors
or wavelengths. Starlight passing through a spectrograph which produces a display of colors and ...

Most of the Stars we see are similar in size to our sun. Some stars have almost have the same mass as
the sun. Stars that are very dense have more mass than the Sun and can still be much smaller than the
Sun. Less dense stars may have a larger diameter than the Sun but still have less mass than the Sun.
Stellar Motion The two types of motion that are associated with stars are actual motion through space
and apparent motion across the night sky. Stars are so far from Earth, that their actual motion is
measured using a high powered telescope and specialized spacecraft. Apparent motion is much more
noticeable on any given night.
Apparent Motion of Stars The apparent motion of stars, or motion as it appear from Earth, is caused
by the movement of Earth. As the Earth rotates in an anticlockwise direction, the east west motion of
the night sky becomes apparent. The position of the distant stars is fixed, we are the ones moving. The
rotation of the Earth on its axis in an anticlockwise direction is the reason the stars track across the
sky. In the Northern Hemisphere, every star in the sky circles around the North Star(Polaris). As Earth
orbits the sun Different stars become visible during different seasons. The visible stars appear slightly
to the west at a given time every night, each night most stars appear a small distance farther across the
sky then they were at the same time the night

Marina By Carlos Ruiz Zafon
Finding what we think that we are worth can be a hard thing to do. Many of us think of ourselves as
someone or something that is not worth anything; we constantly put ourselves down in comparison to
other people. By doing this, we are evaluating ourselves on what we think we should be like, which is
called self definition; self definition is basically us grading ourselves based on our social skills. This
story, Marina, written by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, is a story of two people, one person specifically, who
thinks less of himself than he should.
This story is set in the unique city of Barcelona. From what I have read and I heard, I have gathered
that the city is like no other. Its buildings are un predictable, and there is no other building ... Show

Introduction
In this essay I am going to discuss time management and I will be relating it to personal experiences
that I have encountered in the first semester of being in university, this will include my strengths and
weaknesses and how I am going improve and develop both of these. The theories in which I will be
using and applying to my essay are Stephen Covey s Time Management Matrix, Edwin Locke s
Theory of Goal Setting and Pareto s 80 20 Principle.
Time management is the ability to use one s time effectively or productively, especially at work .

1.7.2 Neuro Imaging
Neuroimaging can be a useful tool in detecting physical abnormalities in the brain. Most people with a
severe brain injury will show an abnormality in a neuro imaging test. These scans cannot detect all
types of brain injuries, so it is possible to have a severe brain injury and be in a coma even though the
scan results are normal.
1.7.2.1 Computerized Tomography (CT) Scan
A computerized tomography (CT) scan uses x ray beam technology to create a computerized image of
the brain one section or slice at a time. CT imaging is now the standard of care for a person who has
sustained a significant head injury to determine if a skull fracture has occurred. A CT image will
determine whether there is hemorrhaging or a blood clot forming, brain swelling, or even if a foreign
object has penetrated the brain. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Bone Voyage Summary
Stanley Rhine s Bone Voyage
The book Bone Voyage by Stanley Rhine describes, in stunning detail, the work of forensic
anthropologists. The author works for the New Mexico Office of Medical Investigations. The OMI is
in charge of investigating any death in New Mexico that is sudden, unnatural, untimely, unattended, or
suspicious deaths. They work together with multiple agencies in many different jurisdictions. Bone
Voyage gives a lifelike, almost sickly, reality to the important jobs dealt to forensic anthropologists.
The field of forensic anthropology is relatively young, with roots in the 1960 s and 1970 s. Its
popularity continues to grow today, with TV shows like Bones and novels like Coroner at Large. The
work of a forensic anthropologist is important in a historical and medicolegal context. Without the
study of bones and death, lots of history would be lost forever, and murders would go unsolved. The
first trial in the United States to use forensic anthropologist techniques was the Leutgert Sausage Trial
in 1897. In this case a man who owned a sausage company was found with residual human skeletal
remains in his vats at the sausage factory. George Dorsey, Harvard alum, identified the bones in the
vat, and testified at trial. Although these techniques were not modern by any means, it paved a way for
forensic anthropology in the US legal system. Again the importance of forensic anthropology was
revealed during the outbreak of World War II. The

Persuasive Essay On Road Safety
On the way to work or school today did you wear your seatbelt? If not you were risking you life. Not
wearing your seatbelt increases your risk of being killed or critically injured in car crashes
exponentially. Although some people find seatbelts uncomfortable, seat belts decrease death in car
crashes, allow the car s safety features to perform more efficiently, and saves lives The first reason that
not wearing a seatbelt should be illegal is that seatbelts decrease death in car crashes. Although there
are laws that state people have to wear seatbelts, 11.5% of people in America don t (Jensen). With the
combination of low gas prices and cars getting better gas milage more people are getting on roads
causing more crashes (Korosec). The number of total registered vehicles from the years 1960 to 2017
has increased by a whopping 189,178,419 (Number of U.S. Aircraft, vehicles, vessels and other

Essay on Sex in Ursula K. LeGuin s The Left Hand of Darkness
Let s Talk About Sex
Ursula K. LeGuin s The Left Hand of Darkness is the story of Genly Ai s travels to a strange planet
called Gethen, or Winter. His mission there is to persuade the nations of Gethen to join an alliance
Genly Ai represents called the Ekumen . However, his journey is rather difficult due to the great
difference in societies from Genly Ai s home planet, Earth, and this new one. In Gethen, he learns that
the people are completely unsexed for the majority of their days. When they are sexed, it is only for a
few days and each person is either male or female during this time. The different governments use
Genly Ai as a pawn, but in the end they join the alliance. Unfortunately, it comes with the price of his
friend s life. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
LeGuin does this to reinforce the notion that Genly Ai is completely unassimilated to Gethen culture.
She does this by having Genly Ai describe him as a woman, but calling him by the male title King
where LeGuin could have had Genly Ai call Argaven monarch , a sexless title that still holds as much
accuracy. The best show of Genly Ai s awkward understanding of sex in this manner is, perhaps, when
LeGuin has Genly Ai describe the owner of his apartment building when he says, I though of him as
my landlady, for he has a fat buttocks that wagged as he walked, and a soft fat face, and a prying,
spying, ignoble, kindly nature (48). LeGuin has Genly Ai describe his landowner as a woman simply
because of some of his physical features. LeGuin, using adjectives that describe exclusively females,
has shown that Genly Ai is completely unable to assimilate to Gethen by giving up his perceptions of
people and their sex.
As the novel progresses, LeGuin has Genly Ai s descriptions become a little less sexed to show him
adjusting to Gethen s sexual culture. Later in the novel, LeGuin has Genly Ai meet a character named
Faxe, she has him describe Faxe as having one of the most beautiful human faces [he] ever saw (68).
Here, LeGuin uses the absence of sexed description to show that Genly Ai has adjusted to the
Gethenian culture. Then, when LeGuin has Genly Ai discuss the issue of parenting he simply states,
that the distinction between a maternal and a paternal instinct is

Negligence In Radiology
Everyone who works in the medical field can have mistakes happen to them, it makes us human. The
thing that makes it negligence is when that mistakes happens over and over, or you try to cover up
your mistake instead of making it known. Negligence means you fail to take proper care in a situation.
In radiation many things can go wrong, for example the patient you are going to see needs an x ray of
the right hand and you x ray the left hand, but you don t alert anyone of the mistake you made that is
considered negligence. May people fail to realize the implications that come with a small error can

One of the most common mistakes is to missed diagnosed. Failure to diagnose has been determined to
be the number one reason that radiologists get sued; 75% of radiology lawsuits allege failure to
diagnose or failure to communicate in a timely manner. (Jones, S. (2011, May 11). With this being
said, this is why the radiology program is two years and also you have to pass your boards in order to
practice radiology in a hospital. Not much of radiology is taught at undergraduate level in our medical
colleges. As a result of this, a sizeable number of medical practitioners are not acquainted with the
nuances of imaging modalities. (Sohoni, C. A. (2013, March 23). When you give an incorrect
diagnosis or failure to diagnose and they decide to sue you this can lead to medical malpractice which
means in other words negligence. When there is a case of negligence they have to prove the following
steps, duty of care owned by the RT, breach of duty occurred by the RT, cause of injury due to
negligence of RT and the injury actually occurring. Also the standard of care is often questions if you
provide the same attention and care to all of your patients. This is a multistep system that reveals the
truth of most scenarios. An example of this would be The radiologist owed a duty of care to the patient

Ashoka As The Last King Of The Mauryan Empire Of India
Ashoka the Great ruled between 273 BCE and 231 BCE as the last Great King of the Mauryan Empire
of India (von Sivers, pg. 219). Upon taking the throne, Ashoka continued his father s, as well as
grandfather s, goal of expanding the empire (von Sivers, pg. 220). In doing so, he caused the death of
thousands, which left him pained and questioning of his purpose. To find some sort of easement, he
became a Buddhist and used violence for protection or as a last resort (von Sivers, pg. 220). After
finding his new religion, Ashoka believed a king should set the morals for his people, a very different
belief than most rulers. Ashoka s belief is made evident in his actions after adopting Buddhism and the
Seven Pillar Edicts he instructed his people to follow.
Thirteen years into his rule, King Ashoka adopted Buddhism as his personal religion, and this
adoption changed how he viewed the role of a king (von Sivers, pg. 220). Since the beginning of the
Mauryan Empire, the king was a great warrior who could lead in battle and expand the empire.
Chandragupta Maurya, the first king of the Maurians, did this against the Nanda Kingdom (von
Sivers, pg. 219). Chandragupta s son waged war to expand the empire to south (von Sivers, pg. 220).
Chandragupta s grandson, Ashoka, followed the same pattern against the Kalinga Kingdom (von
Sivers, pg. 220). When he adopted Buddhism, he lived by many of the religion s principles. He
practiced ahimsa, or non violence, and dharma, or that which is

Essay on The Return of Martin Guerre
The Return of Martin Guerre
The purpose of this paper is to introduce, discuss, and analyze the book The Return of Martin Guerre

This book is a fascinating account of a true case that happened during the 16th century in France. The
book is also an excellent example of how the peasants lived in the Middle Ages, from what they ate, to
how they traveled and what their family lives were like.
This book shows that life in the Middle Ages was difficult and demanding, but it seems a little bit

In the Basque country, families often lived together, as the author notes, When a household is set up
with two generations of married folk, it is not the Basque combination of the old heir and the young
heir, but a widowed parent, usually the mother, with one of her married children (Davis 11). Even
when Martin s uncle married, he moved nearby to another house, and lived close to his relatives.
Martin returned with his bride to his father s house after they married, and lived with his family under
one roof (Davis 18). Since their main concern was survival and perpetuation of the family, this
indicates how important family life was to the peasants.
Women had a lesser position than men did in the society. Davis writes, At the parish mass, she would
have to get used to the fact that her women did not push ahead of the men to make their offerings, did
not go about the church to collect for the vestry, and din not serve as sacristans (Davis 15). Women
were also blamed for a man s impotence, as Davis notes. She writes, In the sixteenth century, it was
usually blamed on the power of a woman outside the marriage (Davis 21). The fact that Martin
abandoned his wife and newborn son after eight years of marriage shows what low status women had
in society. She had no recourse, she lived in a foreign household, and she could not even remarry.

Francis Crick
Francis Crick was a Biophysic born in Northampton, England(1916). He helped create new
technologies during World War II.After the war, he began investigating the structure of DNA with the
Research Council of the University of Cambridge Medical at its Cavendish Laboratory with James D.
Watson. He received a Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1962 which he shared for his work
and he continued coordinating investigation until 2004 when he passed away.
Francis Harry Compton Crick who was born on June 8, 1916 and was educated at Northampton
Grammar School and later went on to Mill Hill School in London. He went to University College
London, where he focused on material science, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1937.

Utilizing X shaft diffraction examinations of DNA. Watson and Crick developed an atomic model
tending to the known physical and substance properties of DNA. It included two interleaved winding
strands, taking after a twisted wandering stool. They speculated that if the two sides split from each
other, every side would change into the explanation behind an outline for the headway of new strains
misty to their past extras.
This theory resulted in examination incited a clarification in the strategy behind the replication of a
quality and, unquestionably, the chromosome. Watson and Crick circled a paper depicting their DNA
twofold helical structure in the trial diary Nature in April of 1953. Another social event at King s
College had been trying to open the structure of DNA also, and the work earned Crick, Watson and

A Report On The Teletech Corporation
The Teletech Corporation is currently using a single, constant, hurdle rate for their two different
segments, which are, telecommunications services and products and systems divisions. Based on the
estimate of corporation s WACC, the hurdle rate is the cost of capital.
Using the data in Exhibit 1, we have calculated the WACC for the telecommunications services
segment and the products and systems segment of Teletech. The WACC for Telecommunications
Services is 8.47%, while it is 11.30% for Products and Services. We used the CAPM model to find the
expected return. The average beta and weight of debt for telecommunication services segment are 1.04
and 27.1%, respectively. We pulled this information from the Telecommunications Services industry
information in Exhibit 3.
For telecommunications, we first calculated cost of equity with Ts=Rf+β*(Rm
Rf)=4.62+1.04*5.5%=10.34%
So, WACC Ts= 27.1%*3.44%+72.9%*10.34%=8.47%
In order to determine the beta and weight of debt for the Products and Systems segment, we averaged
the Equity Beta and and the Mkt. Val. Debt/Capital for the Telecommunications Equipment and
Computer and Network Equipment industries.
For products and systems first we calculated the expected return which is, 4.62%+[(1.39+1.33)/2]
(5.5%)= .121
And we calculated the weight of debt which was Weight of debt for P S= [(13.1%+5.3%)/2]= 9.2%
So, 1 .092= 90.8%. The WACC for P S is WACC(P S)= 9.2% (3.44%) + 90.8%(12.1%), which equals
to 11.30% Rick Phillips Figure 2

Dichotomy In The Outsiders
Have your feelings ever lead you to believe that you did not belong? Feeling such as those are
elegantly portrayed in S.E. Hinton s fictional novel The Outsiders by multiple characters in groups in
the book. These include the social classes, Ponyboy Curtis, and lastly Johnny Cade. When a person s
mind tells them they are different, than they can be classified as an outsider, which means that feeling
of being original is all in the mind. To begin, an outsider is someone who seems left out, whether it is
an opinion of themselves or that of others. In The Outsiders, two social classes; greasers and Socs
show that outsiders can be both inside and outside groups. They also show the role of dichotomy in
discrimination. A character named Cherry Valance is an outsider among the Socs yet she is a part of
that group. We aren t the same class. she had said to Ponyboy ... Show more content on

Socs in the book are explained as cool to the point of not feeling anything (38). Conclusively, Cherry
may be a part of the Socs but is an outsider from them. Her relationship with Ponyboy shows that Socs
and greasers dichotomy only seems to be. Secondly, the main character in the novel, Ponyboy Curtis
displays the role of an outsider by differentiating it from the term individual. Ponyboy is only a part of
the gang because of his brothers. I was a tagalong and a kid he had said Soda always took me when
they went places (9). Even though his siblings had brought Ponyboy to the gang, they still accepted
him, even though he was younger, and felt differently about certain things. His differences is classified
him as an individual as well as an outsider. In summary, it is important to realize the difference
between the concept of individuality from being outsider. Lastly, a small, fragile boy from The
Outsiders named Johnny Cade shows the role of a person s past, and comparison in

The Importance Of Environments In The Environment
environment. Another advantage of this machinery is that it is low cost and eco friendly. Recycling of
spilled oil and regeneration of the Me CNT sponges is done primarily by heat treatment. After use, the
sponges are gathered by magnets, collected and heated (to 493K to release the gasoline vapour or 573
°C to release diesel). After regeneration, the sponge can be reused multiple times for oil sorption. In
fact it can be recycled more than 1000 times. [Xuchun Gui, Zhiping Zeng, Magnetic and Highly

MERCAPTAN MESH OR PDA NDM MESH A stainless steel mesh is initially covered with the
adhesive film by immersion in a concentrated aqueous solution of polydopamine (PDA). Then N
Dodecyl mercaptan (NDM) was then conjugated with the PDA film on the mesh through the Michael
addition reaction. Now the Polydopamine N Dodecyl Mercaptan mesh is capable of attracting various
molecules to be introduced onto the surface. The mesh can be used to specifically isolate water from
oil/water mixtures with high efficiency, and the mesh can be effortlessly cleansed, stored, and reused.
The mesh has been weaved using stainless steel wires. It has a large number of nanostructured
papillaes on its surface. the nanostructured papillaes get more intensive after the conjugation between
n dodecyl mercaptan present in the oil, and the PDA mesh. The holes has an average diameter of 40
μm which is why oil can flow easily though the mesh. The basic

Sexism And The Star System In Architecture Analysis
Sexism and the star system in architecture In her article, Denise Scott Brown brings to light her
personal experience as being a female architect and the sexism that she had come across. Brown
describes how sexism is not outright, as she states that many young female architects do not
understand the need for the feminist movement as they had never experienced such sexism in school.
Rather, sexism appeared through the words of architecture critics, in meetings, and architectural
magazines. Despite her impactful personal statement in the frustrations she felt in a gender
discriminated occupation, the article lacked context. Denise Scott Brown described her struggles with
her lack of acknowledgement and the internal struggles she felt: her waning sense of self worth and
displeasure from her growing hostile personality. Also, she was extremely thorough with her
description of how architecture critics used the star system to attribute all collaborated ideas to a
single entity. Yet, she does not really mention how sexism is a larger cultural issue, as she is too busy
emphasizing the sexism she faced in the workforce. I believe that adding cultural context would
broaden the article by revealing the motivation behind sexist attitudes. For example, with the critique

The question of What is History? is answered through philosophical questions. This led to many
tangents which could confuse readers and retract from the strength of the thesis. Furthermore, the
concept of history being based on facts almost seems to be refuted as the author states that facts are
not always concrete. An example of this is when the Carr mentions that articles are seen as a form of
fact, however, that documents only tell what the author of the document believed had happened. Such
a rebuttal causes confusion on whether to trust historic facts, as all as they seem to be all

  • 2. Homeric Gods Homeric Gods Lecture Summary The lecture on Homeric gods by Professor Carolyn Anderson provided information about the Odyssey, ancient Greek culture, and the gods presiding in the culture. During the time period of the ancient Greeks, much was unexplainable. The numerous gods were a way to explain occurrences and their religion was a way of regulating the world and having structure, and the gods played a large part in the Greek culture. The religion was also heavily influenced by narratives about causality such as the Odyssey and the Iliad. The Odyssey and Iliad are not divine texts, but they are foundational. These stories originated as oral poetry and to create a fixed text people from all over came together with their best versions and piece by piece the epic poems were put together. Poseidon was the god of the sea, and Hades was the god of the dead. Then there was Helios who was the god of the sun, and Aphrodite was the god of love. The gods had to obey the fates, and necessity. They were reflections of man in the sense that they had good and bad impulses. They could be distracted and hold grudges. These beings were not what we would expect from divinity now. There were multiple origins of the gods. Small worship towns had different ideas of what each god was. In one town Artemis, the god of hunting and the moon, was a virgin to some people, but in other areas she was sexualized. It also was common for there to be a masculine religion of sky gods, and feminine religion of Earth gods. The purpose of the gods was to inforce the difference between mortality and immortality. Heroes were humans that were favored by the gods and some heroes were offered immortality. Many declined because in the culture the people preferred to live a short heroic honorable life than a long one that will not be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Social Vulnerability In Emergency Management When a disaster hits an area it does not discriminate on where it hits or who is affected. When it comes to effective emergency management it is important that managers take into account certain preimpact conditions in order to properly prepare, mitigate, respond and recover from a disaster regardless of the magnitude. One preimpact condition that is important to consider is the Social Vulnerability. Social vulnerability is important because it assesses the resilience of communities and how disasters or external stressors can impact them (Lindell et al, 2006, pg. 153). It is important for emergency personnel to understand the social vulnerability of a community in order to alleviate the amount of human suffering and economic loss that can occur post disaster. In order to determine an areas social vulnerability the Emergency Management uses a system known as the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) for disaster management. • 5. Restrictions Of Women In 19th Century Literature The classic works of Jane Austen, Emily Bronte, and Charlotte Bronte are powerful examples of the restrictions that women of the 19th century endured. These women collectively penned several of the most famous novels ever written, subversively authoring their works either anonymously or under male names, thus allowing their novels to become much more widely read than they would have been. Emma, by Jane Austen, Wuthering Heights, by Emily Bronte, and Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte, are all examples of works that call into question traditional roles of gender and social class and prove themselves to reveal similar themes in structure and style. These novels align themselves similarly from the very first lines by strongly establishing the tone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Bronte 372), but also of someone who is isolated and wounded. The reader can feel that this individual, although young, has a life that is wrought with tragedy, as she is taunted by John Reed, ...You are a dependent, mama says; you have no money; your father left you none; you ought to beg, and not to live here with gentlemen s children like us, and eat the same meals we do, and wear clothes at our mama s expense. In the aftermath of the riot there were three major outcomes. One, the McCone Commission was set up by the government to study the riots. The McCone Commission found that people rioted because of unemployment, bad schools and education, and prior instances of police brutality (www.southcentralhistory.com). A second outcome following was an independent commission, chaired by former Illinois Gov. Otto Kerner, that investigated the causes of the rioting. The Kerner Commission issued its landmark report in 1968, concluding: Our nation is moving toward two societies, one black, one white separate and unequal (www.cnn.com). Another major outcome was the creation of SWAT teams. The movement was influenced heavily by the discoveries made in politics, sciences and psychology of the time. Discoveries such as Darwin s evolutionary theories, Marx s Das Kapital and even Freud s research on the psychology of the human were creating shock and upset and began to revolutionised society s outlook on the world. The naturalist movement in literature also coincided with the beginnings of women s emancipation throughout the western world. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In an unsigned notice in The Daily News of June 1889 a writer condemns Nora s actions, Deserting her home, her husband, and above all her children, simply because she finds her husband is angry with her...it may be confidently asserted that no women who ever breathed would do any such thing (1889). Clement Scott, editor of Theatre, would not even describe her action as human but a thing that one of the lower animals would not do (1889a, p. 114) and in an article for The Daily Telegraph even calls Nora absolutely inhuman (1889b, p. 102). This shock reaction was understandable in a culture that had defined a women s place in society, or metaphorically, placed women in a box; the fact that Nora chose to step out of that box was an issue of serious debate. If Nora should desert her place in society then so could others. However W.E Simonds, having read H.F Lord s translation of A Dolls House, reprimanded any critic for calling Nora selfish and failing to see Nora s womanliness and emancipated individuality (1890, p. 147). It is this emancipation of the individual that could be the solution to discovering a theme beyond Ibsen s feminism. Even Ibsen himself disclaimed any conscious efforts on his part to write A Doll s House as a way of rallying for the women s rights movement and claimed it to be purposeful description of humanity (cited in Templeton 1997, p. 110). War, conquest, and reconquest are frequent throughout the entire history of Spain, and the history of Moors in Spain is no exception. It began in the year 711 when the Moors first crossed over to the Iberian Peninsula, until their expulsion from Granada in 1492 which marks the end of the Reconquista, they influenced the native Iberians in many ways including culture and religion. Due to his opposition of Muslim control, Pelagius and a group of 30 some men were exiled and lived in a cave, refusing to pay taxes and harassing the Moors. Darcy And Collins Proposal Essay It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife, this quote is the first line of Pride and Prejudice, which also stands as a summary for the entire plot of the story: marriage. This plot involves many key events, two of the most important being Darcy s proposal to Elizabeth and Collins proposal to Elizabeth. Within both proposals, Darcy and Collins are confident that Elizabeth will accept. Mr. Collins is Elizabeth s cousin who is next in line to receive the Bennet estate. This reason, with the fact that his patroness, Lady Catherine, wants him to pursue a wife, is why he proposed to Elizabeth, and with the estate circumstances, why he assumed she would say yes. Understanding Schizophrenia from the Mind of a Mental Health Victim Themselves With basic information on what this mental illness is, to understand Schizophrenia further, research into personal encounters became apparent. After looking into the mind of Ian Chovil who was a victim of the mental health disease and finding his accounts very eccentric it is clear that this is something that could quite possibly affect the brains of the people that commit serious crimes in regards to the Media. Ian says in his story a few things which connect this type of mental health to violent obscure behaviour. He says he had delusions right from the start which after reading his story states, progressed from visions of famous persons trying to force him to commit suicide right to the later stages of his schizophrenia where he says he got a lot of messages from favourite Rock and Rolla songs, movies, cartoons and library books. Ian doesn t say these forms of media forced him to murder innocent people but it does provide evidence that he received messages. These messages in the mind of another schizophrenic could lead to serious acts of violence which leads onto the next part of his story where he mentions how his delusions changed as aliens instructed him on the real nature of reality then three things happened as contact with reality became very tenuous, he got into trouble with the law, became an alcoholic and lost his job. It s been over fifty years since the civil rights movement and unfortunately American television, at times, keeps racism and discrimination alive. Some of America s longest running and most favorite television shows are riddled with negative stereotypes, hidden prejudices, and outright discrimination. Even worse, is the commercials that are on everyday television that demoralized and debase a whole race of people. Sadly, these companies and corporations sometimes don t even realize that there is anything wrong with what they are showing on television. This shows how sad the state of our race relations are in this country. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The fact that they used an African American kid for this commercial is highly prejudice. Prejudice is when a negative attitude is felt against an entire group of people (Schaefer 2015). This advertisement gives that image that all African Americans are drug dealing monsters. This type of imagery has led to discrimination against African Americans because they are looked at like they are criminals when that is not the case. Discrimination is when a group of people is denied the same rights and opportunities because of prejudice (Schaefer 2015). Something that is disturbing about this advertisement and the group that was behind making it, Partnership for a drug free America, is that they were funded by over two hundred major American corporations. These types of images that were played on television and backed by so many large companies show that institutional discrimination is a problem in this nation. Institutional discrimination is when a group of people are denied opportunities and their rights are taken away during the normal operations of society. Lastly, that brings me to my last example of racism in the media and that is the Willie Horton and the revolving door ads. Willie Horton was a prisoner in the Massachusetts prison system for murder. • 14. The British Aero Engine Manufacturer Introduction Rolls Royce Limited is the British aero engine manufacturer. Its main export of jet engines remained 40% of total sales to U.S. market. Due that the global market of the engines was dominated by two U.S. companies called Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Group and General Electric s aerospace division, Rolls Royce had to deal with any oversea contracts which were fixed in dollar terms. On the other hand, Rolls Royce s operating costs were arisen in sterling. Therefore, Rolls Royce had to price its products in U.S. dollar and calculate its cost in GBP. Unfortunately a continued weakness of the U.S. dollar resulted that Rolls Royce suffered a heavy loss of their profit from its annual report in 1979. Besides, the company won some engine contracts in 1978 and 1979, but no doubt they were priced in U.S. dollar. Hence, under the market condition, whether U.S. dollar was depreciation or appreciation, it would dramatically affect Rolls Royce s profit in certain period of time. 1. Knopf effectively uses ethos to prove to the reader the credibility of his piece. One way Knopf goes about doing this is he uses several creditable sources to back up his points. These sources include, Unites States Department of Agriculture, Working Group s Farm Subsidies Database, and the New York Times. A mother giving birth to her child is the greatest thing. A mother letting go of her child is the hardest thing. In the two poems, Mother of the Groom by Seamus Heany and To a Daughter Leaving Home by Linda Pastan, the readers are able to understand the emotions of how a mother feels for either her daughter or son leaving. Seamus Heany wrote the poem, Mother of the Groom in 1966. This poem is about the grief and sorrow a mother encounters when her son is getting married. It s like she s losing her son to marriage. The tone throughout the poem explains how the mother does not want the son to leave her. Linda Pastan wrote, To a Daughter Leaving Home in 1988. This poem was bittersweet and emotional. After reading Hansel and Gretel, abused children can try to find their own hope to pull themselves out of the hole their witch put them in. • 30. Bone Voyage Summary Stanley Rhine s Bone Voyage The book Bone Voyage by Stanley Rhine describes, in stunning detail, the work of forensic anthropologists. The author works for the New Mexico Office of Medical Investigations. The OMI is in charge of investigating any death in New Mexico that is sudden, unnatural, untimely, unattended, or suspicious deaths. They work together with multiple agencies in many different jurisdictions. Bone Voyage gives a lifelike, almost sickly, reality to the important jobs dealt to forensic anthropologists. The field of forensic anthropology is relatively young, with roots in the 1960 s and 1970 s. Its popularity continues to grow today, with TV shows like Bones and novels like Coroner at Large. The work of a forensic anthropologist is important in a historical and medicolegal context. Without the study of bones and death, lots of history would be lost forever, and murders would go unsolved. The first trial in the United States to use forensic anthropologist techniques was the Leutgert Sausage Trial in 1897. In this case a man who owned a sausage company was found with residual human skeletal remains in his vats at the sausage factory. George Dorsey, Harvard alum, identified the bones in the vat, and testified at trial. Although these techniques were not modern by any means, it paved a way for forensic anthropology in the US legal system. She does this by having Genly Ai describe him as a woman, but calling him by the male title King where LeGuin could have had Genly Ai call Argaven monarch , a sexless title that still holds as much accuracy. The best show of Genly Ai s awkward understanding of sex in this manner is, perhaps, when LeGuin has Genly Ai describe the owner of his apartment building when he says, I though of him as my landlady, for he has a fat buttocks that wagged as he walked, and a soft fat face, and a prying, spying, ignoble, kindly nature (48). LeGuin has Genly Ai describe his landowner as a woman simply because of some of his physical features. LeGuin, using adjectives that describe exclusively females, has shown that Genly Ai is completely unable to assimilate to Gethen by giving up his perceptions of people and their sex. As the novel progresses, LeGuin has Genly Ai s descriptions become a little less sexed to show him adjusting to Gethen s sexual culture. Later in the novel, LeGuin has Genly Ai meet a character named Faxe, she has him describe Faxe as having one of the most beautiful human faces [he] ever saw (68). Even when Martin s uncle married, he moved nearby to another house, and lived close to his relatives. Martin returned with his bride to his father s house after they married, and lived with his family under one roof (Davis 18). Since their main concern was survival and perpetuation of the family, this indicates how important family life was to the peasants. Women had a lesser position than men did in the society. Utilizing X shaft diffraction examinations of DNA. Watson and Crick developed an atomic model tending to the known physical and substance properties of DNA. It included two interleaved winding strands, taking after a twisted wandering stool. This theory resulted in examination incited a clarification in the strategy behind the replication of a quality and, unquestionably, the chromosome. Watson and Crick circled a paper depicting their DNA twofold helical structure in the trial diary Nature in April of 1953. • 42. A Report On The Teletech Corporation The Teletech Corporation is currently using a single, constant, hurdle rate for their two different segments, which are, telecommunications services and products and systems divisions. Based on the estimate of corporation s WACC, the hurdle rate is the cost of capital. Using the data in Exhibit 1, we have calculated the WACC for the telecommunications services segment and the products and systems segment of Teletech. The WACC for Telecommunications Services is 8.47%, while it is 11.30% for Products and Services. We used the CAPM model to find the expected return. The average beta and weight of debt for telecommunication services segment are 1.04 and 27.1%, respectively. We pulled this information from the Telecommunications Services industry information in Exhibit 3. For telecommunications, we first calculated cost of equity with Ts=Rf+β*(Rm Rf)=4.62+1.04*5.5%=10.34% So, WACC Ts= 27.1%*3.44%+72.9%*10.34%=8.47% In order to determine the beta and weight of debt for the Products and Systems segment, we averaged the Equity Beta and and the Mkt. Val. Debt/Capital for the Telecommunications Equipment and Computer and Network Equipment industries. For products and systems first we calculated the expected return which is, 4.62%+[(1.39+1.33)/2] (5.5%)= .121 And we calculated the weight of debt which was Weight of debt for P S= [(13.1%+5.3%)/2]= 9.2% So, 1 .092= 90.8%. The WACC for P S is WACC(P S)= 9.2% (3.44%) + 90.8%(12.1%), which equals to 11.30% Rick Phillips Figure 2 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Dichotomy In The Outsiders Have your feelings ever lead you to believe that you did not belong? Feeling such as those are elegantly portrayed in S.E. Hinton s fictional novel The Outsiders by multiple characters in groups in the book. These include the social classes, Ponyboy Curtis, and lastly Johnny Cade. When a person s mind tells them they are different, than they can be classified as an outsider, which means that feeling of being original is all in the mind. To begin, an outsider is someone who seems left out, whether it is an opinion of themselves or that of others. In The Outsiders, two social classes; greasers and Socs show that outsiders can be both inside and outside groups. They also show the role of dichotomy in discrimination. A character named Cherry Valance is an outsider among the Socs yet she is a part of that group. We aren t the same class. she had said to Ponyboy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Socs in the book are explained as cool to the point of not feeling anything (38). Conclusively, Cherry may be a part of the Socs but is an outsider from them. Her relationship with Ponyboy shows that Socs and greasers dichotomy only seems to be. Secondly, the main character in the novel, Ponyboy Curtis displays the role of an outsider by differentiating it from the term individual. Ponyboy is only a part of the gang because of his brothers. I was a tagalong and a kid he had said Soda always took me when they went places (9). Even though his siblings had brought Ponyboy to the gang, they still accepted him, even though he was younger, and felt differently about certain things. His differences is classified him as an individual as well as an outsider. In summary, it is important to realize the difference between the concept of individuality from being outsider. Lastly, a small, fragile boy from The Outsiders named Johnny Cade shows the role of a person s past, and comparison in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. The Importance Of Environments In The Environment environment. Another advantage of this machinery is that it is low cost and eco friendly. Recycling of spilled oil and regeneration of the Me CNT sponges is done primarily by heat treatment. After use, the sponges are gathered by magnets, collected and heated (to 493K to release the gasoline vapour or 573 °C to release diesel). After regeneration, the sponge can be reused multiple times for oil sorption. In fact it can be recycled more than 1000 times. POLYDOPAMINE N DODECYL MERCAPTAN MESH OR PDA NDM MESH A stainless steel mesh is initially covered with the adhesive film by immersion in a concentrated aqueous solution of polydopamine (PDA). Then N Dodecyl mercaptan (NDM) was then conjugated with the PDA film on the mesh through the Michael addition reaction. Now the Polydopamine N Dodecyl Mercaptan mesh is capable of attracting various molecules to be introduced onto the surface. The mesh can be used to specifically isolate water from oil/water mixtures with high efficiency, and the mesh can be effortlessly cleansed, stored, and reused. The mesh has been weaved using stainless steel wires. It has a large number of nanostructured papillaes on its surface. the nanostructured papillaes get more intensive after the conjugation between n dodecyl mercaptan present in the oil, and the PDA mesh. The holes has an average diameter of 40 μm which is why oil can flow easily though the mesh. The basic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Sexism And The Star System In Architecture Analysis Sexism and the star system in architecture In her article, Denise Scott Brown brings to light her personal experience as being a female architect and the sexism that she had come across. Brown describes how sexism is not outright, as she states that many young female architects do not understand the need for the feminist movement as they had never experienced such sexism in school. Rather, sexism appeared through the words of architecture critics, in meetings, and architectural magazines. Despite her impactful personal statement in the frustrations she felt in a gender discriminated occupation, the article lacked context. Denise Scott Brown described her struggles with her lack of acknowledgement and the internal struggles she felt: her waning sense of self worth and displeasure from her growing hostile personality. Also, she was extremely thorough with her description of how architecture critics used the star system to attribute all collaborated ideas to a single entity. Yet, she does not really mention how sexism is a larger cultural issue, as she is too busy emphasizing the sexism she faced in the workforce. I believe that adding cultural context would broaden the article by revealing the motivation behind sexist attitudes. For example, with the critique by Hideki Shimizu ... This led to many tangents which could confuse readers and retract from the strength of the thesis. Furthermore, the concept of history being based on facts almost seems to be refuted as the author states that facts are not always concrete. An example of this is when the Carr mentions that articles are seen as a form of fact, however, that documents only tell what the author of the document believed had happened.
