Rhetorical Analysis of Cultural Baggage Essay
Jenny Stout

Rhetorical Analysis In Barbara Ehrenreich s Cultural baggage, the topic of ethnic heritage is discussed
as the author is responding to an acquaintance asking her what her ethnic background is. Ehrenreich
finds her purpose for writing her essay in making readers aware that no ethnic background is in fact a
background. She takes on a not so common viewpoint of herself as most people pride themselves in
where they came from and the traditions of their culture, rather than feeling almost embarrassed to
claim their background. Ehrenreich claims that she has no ethnic background, disregarding her
Scottish, English, and Irish heritage. While others stand up and proudly reclaim ... Show more content

Ehrenreich was finally able to feel a sense of pride knowing that the race of none marches on. The
author wrote her essay including several references to certain traditions that different cultures practice.
The audience is assumed to have some general knowledge of different cultures, but nothing to
extensive. The author also assumes that the audience is somewhat well educated due to the higher
level word choices she makes. Ehrenreich is describing her realization of heritage to her audience in
the possible hopes that the readers can either relate in some way or share some of the excitement that
she does in her own ethnicity, or lack of. Ehrenreich was able to make her point that she does in fact
have an ethnicity other than Scottish, English and Irish. It was intriguing to see the progression in the
essay from the authors feeling of disconnect with her heritage to a sense of pride in her family that
refrains from carrying on cultural activities. She recognizes where she came from and concludes that
no tradition is a tradition, rather than trying to

Analysis on Swift s Attitude Towards Humanity
Analysis on Swift s Attitude towards Humanity
Introduction
In1726, Jonathan Swift, one of the best known realistic writers in 18th century, published his book
Gulliver s Travels which on the surface is a collection of travel journals of a surgeon called Lemuel
Gulliver but actually is a work of satire on politics and human nature. In the four incredible
adventures, Gulliver s perceptions are tied closely with Swift s shame and disgust against British
government and even against the whole of the human condition as Richard Rodino says in his book
that Gulliver is neither a fully developed character nor even an altogether distinguishable persona;
rather, he is a satiric device enabling Swift to score satirical points. (Rodino 124) ... Show more

Degeneration of Humanity
Swift considers human are not only evil in nature but keep corrupting. The European moralists say:
the nature is degenerated in these latter declining ages of the world, and could now produce only small
abortive births in comparison of those ancient times (Swift 187) In Glubbdubdrib, people can make
ancients appears with magic, Gulliver makes conversation with ancients, and finds As every person
called up made exactly the same appearance he had done in the world, it gave me melancholy
reflections to observe how much the race of mankind was degenerated among us, within those
hundred years past , how all these pure native virtues were prostituded for a piece of money by their
grandchildren (Swift 271) Gulliver is thrown into deep melancholy as he discover the degeneration of
human nature. Not only the ancient virtues are lost, but also man s physical condition is becoming
worse and worse as Swift points out in Gulliver s fourth voyage to the land of the Houyhnhnms where
his satire reaches its pinnacle: I seemed to fail in strength and agility , He said I differed indeed from
other Yahoos, being much more cleanly, and not altogether so deformed, but in point of real advantage
he thought I differed for the worse. (Swift 322) human s disposition is like Yahoos which is violent

Crime Scene Degradation
The degradation of a crime scene will happen, to a degree, as soon as the responding patrol officer
enters the primary crime scene. Since the first responding officer had to check the victim for wounds
and rule out medical attention, possible trace evidence on the floor could be compromised or lost.
Next, the first responder had to secure the scene ensuring the suspect was no longer in the apartment at
which time the officer s fingerprints, hair, and DNA could now be contaminating the crime scene.
Moreover, the paramedics have touched the body and possibly moved her from her original state
rendering it impossible to know the exact pose of the body. Also, the numerous uniformed police
officers walking about the crime scene allowed for more unintentional

Informative Speech Evaluation Essay
Informative speech evaluation
My introduction was quite low. Like they always say the beginning of everything is always the
hardest. Later on when I continued with my speech I started to gain my audience s attention since I
became more confidence in my self than when I first started my presentation. I had my note card with
me that really helped me a lot with all my points, hence I could have forgotten everything that I had
prepared on the table for the day. It helped me in reviewing all my points one by one. I used the power
point method as part of the requirement for the presentation. Which also helped in supporting my
speech, since it gave a better understanding on what I was talking about.

Plato Believe Only White Men Can Understand Good Art
Does Plato believe only white men can understand good art? I mean white guys have been dominating
the art world for centuries, so why break the cycle? White men have privilege and history under their
belt so they have the time and money to spend studying and thinking about philosophical ideas and
theories. Plato says you must understand philosophy to understand beauty and thus only philosophers
and statesmen have access to beauty, as though the thought of a black women or a poor man having
that consideration is inconceivable.
There are three factors Plato describes that be in play in under must take to consider art to be
beautiful; techne, the concept of imitative poetic inspiration; and madness. With the first step, Plato is
not referring to techno, a form of electronic dance music that emerged in Detroit, Michigan, in the
United States during the mid to late 1980s , but techne , the generic idea of art whose principle is
measure 2. If you plan to make art, you are required to know what the finished product is going to
look like and how you are going to make it before you begin to create it. To know if your art is going
to be good before you start making it, Plato references that the fact there must be harmony and balance
in art for it to correspond to the principles of measure and proportion. For example, if you are painting

Boston Fire Service Research Paper
Throughout the world, The United States is known to have one of the most aggressive, progressive
and passionate emergency fire services who constantly serve their localities. The fire service has
immensely developed in American culture, starting as early as the 1600 s in Colonial America and
continuing to today in the 21st Century. Fire departments throughout the world have the similar goal
of protecting and saving life and property, however the United States has taken this to the most
extreme. This vital service to the community has always been and will always be a necessity to a city
in order to guarantee the prosperity of the public.

The City of Boston was the first to then set out to lay the groundwork for a progressing fire service. In
1653, Boston instituted multiple codes which equipped buildings with firefighting tools and a central
water system. Then, in 1676 a new code issued a requirement for the use of fire resistant material in
building construction. Simultaneously in 1676, Boston purchased the first fire pumper which would
force water, from a tank, out of a hose. The tank in the pumper would require a supply of water to
keep the tank filled. The fire department had no way of obtaining a constant or pressurized water
supply, thus, Boston instituted the first paid per diem bucket brigade staffed by twelve men, alongside
the first fire captain, Thomas Atkins, who would transport and operate the pump at a fire scene. After
the success of the first organized fire department, by 1720, ten new fire stations would develop in
Boston consisting of six engines and twenty men, which would assist each other if the fire demanded
more manpower. The assisting of each other at fire scenes instituted the rudimentary principle of
mutual aid in the fire service, which plays a pivotal role in the fire service today. (Collins

A Dystopian Society In Pakistan
Imagine, there is a girl and she is stripped from her right to have an education, or there is a women
that is castigated for doing something without a man; this is the life Pakistani women and girls face.
Pakistan has over the years created a dystopian society for many different reasons. When deciphering
how Pakistan and the Taliban make decisions that create a dystopian society among their citizens, one
can observe what the leaders of Pakistan did that made the society become dystopian, they can assess
what impact these decisions had on Pakistani people and other nations, and one could analyze the way
authors delineate dystopia in novels.
When evaluating people and government s actions that create dystopian society in Pakistan, one can
see the people who suppressed women and examples of the unequal rights and the reasons behind it.
In Pakistan, women cannot even walk outside without a male escort. These broad divisions have an
umbrella of male chauvinism and defined social roles where women are not perceived as individuals
but as mothers, wives, daughters and sisters (Mustafa). These women are being stigmatized, and they
seem to have no value as humans. Women are put into unpleasurable, tedious places of work, and are
yelled orders. What is even more preposterous is after these long, hard days of work, the women do
not even get to keep their money. The money would be put in the hands of the misogynistic men in
their life. The chances of women s impartiality are slim

Witchcraft in the 17th Century Essay
Witchcraft in the 17th Century
Witchcraft in Europe during the 17th century was common. It mainly took place in Germany, but also
took place in England. Witches were associated with evil; it was believed witches inherited magical
powers from Satan in exchange for the witch s soul. Some of these magical powers included
outrageous claims such as flying, being able to transform and cursing bad luck on others. It was
extremely dangerous to be accused of being a witch as the most common punishment was death, often
by beheading or even being burnt at the stake.

swimming of witches method. This type of trial involved attaching a rope around a person s body and
dunking them in the water, if they were to float then they would be considered guilty. The water was
supposed to represent purity, anybody who floated was thought to have a pact with Satan and therefore

result. This type of trial was later outlawed as a superstitious and disorderly practice.

Exercise may be the hub of a healthy lifestyle, yet some individuals become psychologically
dependent on it. The purpose of the current study is to examine the relationship between exercise
dependence and self determined motivation. An online survey was conducted used 185 participants
with a mean age of 20.22 years (117 females and 73 males) enrolled in Kinesiology 2276 at Western
University. The survey consisted of the Godin Leisure Time Exercise Questionnaire (Godin Shepard,

Regulation in Exercise Quesitonnaire 2 (Markland Tobin, 2004). Results were collected and analyzed
with the use of the statistical software program SPSS v.20.0. It was found that exercise dependence
was positively correlated with constituents of the Self determination theory. Of these, introjected

The decrease in mortality rates over the over the past 150 yrs. has been attributed to four factors
according to the UN report in 1953. Those factors are; 1) public health measures;2) advances in
medical knowledge and therapeutics;3) improved personal hygiene; and 4) improved standard of
living (p.5). Mckeown and Brown s attempts at understanding why health improved, explored factors
which influenced the major decline in mortality rates in the United Kingdom after 1840 (p.5). They
cited a large decline in mortality from airborne diseases, water and sanitation systems in the 1800 s
and finally concluded that the decrease in mortality was due to improved prosperity and nutrition
(p.5). These factors are discussed in modern times as Dr. Steven Woolf gave his testimony to the U.S.
Senate in 2013, that as an example, 68% of American adults have income that is more than twice the
poverty level. Suppose we boosted that number just slightly, from 68% to 70% and looked at the
impact on one disease diabetes. That higher income would mean about 400 million fewer cases of
diabetes saving $2 billion per year to treat that disease (p.1). Increasing income contributes to lower
health issues and chronic disease. The applied simplistic equation of increased income decreased
health issues is phenomenal, but why are we a society in which inequalities in health still

Symbols in Susan Glaspell s Trifles
In the play titled Trifles, by Susan Glaspell, Minnie Foster Wright is being accused of murdering her
husband, John. In this production, Mrs. Wright is consistently referenced, and although she is not
witnessed, she is very recognizable. There are important symbols in this play that signifies Mrs.
Wright and her existence as it once was and as it currently exists to be. Particularly the canary, this
symbolizes Mrs. Wright s long forgotten past. Additionally, the birdcage, this symbolizes her life as it

While the canary was incredibly lively and sang beautifully, so did Mrs. Foster. John Wright was
awfully abusive towards Mrs. Wright, in the means that he required her to live her life comparable to a
caged bird. He obtained her freedom from the outside world, in return, explains why she recognized
herself in the bird. This explains for the reasoning of their house being far set back into the woods and
having no telephone service. She ventured out, only when she was allowed, and assuming that John
also did not allow her to have friends, this led to the killing of the canary.
The quilt is one major clue as to how Minnie killed her husband. The women were trying to figure out
if she was going to sew or not the quilt. Well, Mr. Wright was strangled in a strange manner, just how
the knot was messed up in red string. The men laughed it off butt Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters knew
what had happened.
Mrs. Wright is referred to when Mrs. Hale speaks of her by using her maiden name, when saying ?I

the choir and sang.? The old rocking chair symbolizes Mrs. Wright as she has allowed herself to

that the chair was not anything like she remembered, referring to the fact that Mrs. Wright has also

Comparing Nectar In A Sieve And Greek Mythology
The Indian culture of Nectar in a Sieve and the Greek culture Mythology are without doubt very
different. However, despite those differences, both cultures share some similarities. The link between
the Indian culture in Nectar in a Sieve and Greek culture is the fact that both cultures are polytheistic,
meaning that they worship more than one god. For instance, in Nectar in a Sieve, a massive storm
came upon the village where Ruku (main character) and her family lived, which caused the
destruction of their home and more importantly the crops, which provided them with food in order to
survive. Since Ruku and her family, amongst the other villagers, saw that the situation was not going
to improve any time soon they began to pray to their gods.

Sympatric Speciation Essay

What is the difference between Allopatric Speciation and Sympatric Speciation?
Allopatric Speciation refers to an outside source begetting geographic separation between two or more
groups of animals obviating them from copulating with each other and leading to the speciation of
their lineage (University of California Museum of Paleontology, 2016a). In contrast, Sympatric
Speciation does not involve physical separation, but instead occurs when development of a habitat
reduces gene flow between a species (University of California Museum of Paleontology, 2016e). For
example, a species of bug typically lays its eggs on oranges, but the introduction of peaches to their
environment spurs some of the species to lay their eggs on the peaches instead. Moreover, with this

Analysis Of Daniel Kahneman s The Surety Of Fools
Voltaire once said, Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is an absurd one. We live in a world
that is constantly changing and does not grant the certainty that people desire. But, people want the
stability of knowing what is going to happen; this is why certainty is absurd. In his essay The Surety
of Fools, Daniel Kahneman provides examples of people using a phenomenon he calls the illusion of
validity. These people strongly believe their actions cause a specific outcome, when in reality there is
statistical evidence that shows their actions have no direct correlation with the outcome. While
Kahneman argues the illusion of validity comes partially from people s tendency to make quick
decisions without fully conveying the causes, it really stems from people s fear of uncertainty from
having a lack of knowledge. Other fields of academia, such as science and economics, have admitted
that uncertainty grounds their thinking processes. Kahneman is inaccurate in neglecting to mention
that it is the fear of uncertainty that really causes the illusion of validity. Kahneman argues that the
illusion of validity comes from fast thinking because it is prone to doubt. Meaning, people naturally
think quickly because they need a reason and so they do not have time to question their explanation.
However, Kahneman neglects to mention that fast thinking roots itself in the fear of uncertainty.
Kahneman begins his essay by describing his experience in evaluating

want to learn more about the culture of the natives in the land and to better understand their way of

Character Analysis Of The Snow In Trapped, By Michael...
It was one of those bull s eyes in history, one of those points where everything comes together, where,
if you were at that place at that time, you were part of something big. It meant that we weren t going
to get picked up, not on that day and maybe not ever (Northrop 1). The mood created by Northrop in
Trapped is displayed to the readers as negative vibe. Being trapped at a school in a blizzard is
obviously not a good thing. So, as a visual representation to the teenagers situation, the snow is
described negatively too. In the book Trapped, Michael Northrop uses the snow to symbolize dreadful
times and loneliness. Throughout the text, Michael mentions the snow. Considering the book s about a
blizzard, that d be normal, right? However, in my view, the snow symbolizes something, like dreadful
times. Scattered around, the context surrounding the snow can be interpreted as how you feel during
those times. For example, later in the book, when the students realize just how bad it is, they explain it
as, There was no higher ground, no place left for us to go (Northrop 158). Here, a relation to people
feeling as if there s nowhere else to go, so they re trapped in the horrible event occurring can be made.
Results tend to be mourning over those poor times in people s lives. Similarly, Michael connects that
to how we view bad situations. Early on in the book, description of the snow is showed as it being
small flakes , like grains of sugar... the flakes had fattened up and

How Does Steinbeck Present Disadvantaged Characters
Explore some of the ways in which Steinbeck presents disadvantaged characters in the novel
In 1937, the American author John Steinbeck published Of mice and Men . Set in the Salinas Valley of
California, it conveys the story of the struggles of the American people during The Great Depression .
The Great Depression was a massive devastation throughout the whole of America where people

people had died, showing how hard the citizens coped to survive in between this difficult period. . The

Steinbeck presents another character which I think is one of the most hindered upon Crooks. Crooks is
highly discriminated, especially at this time, because he is black. He is a black man that lives in
America at the time of segregation from the colour of his skin. This was tragic and sad for the black
community as they were marginal. Living as a black man being employed was one of the most hardest
job, this caused a lot of unemployment for the coloured public .The only upper hand crooks had was a
job in the ranch, it still was very risky, the boss beat him for no reason, but this was all he could do for
a living.
S pose you didn t have nobody. S pose you couldn t go to the bunk house and play rummy cause you
was black. 72. Steinbeck often demonstrates towards his audience that Crooks is a victim of isolation
and loneliness, this illustrates the high level of prejudice and separation against the black ethnic
minority of the 1930s. Crooks use of the word S pose twice in short time to show the emphasis of his
feelings.
The appearance and physical disability of Crooks also makes him impoverished, he has a crooked
back and thus is called by the name Crooks .
Now and then he poured a few drops of the liniment into his pink palmed hand and reached up under
his shirt to rub again. He flexed his muscles against his back and shivered. 67. Steinbeck provides his

are sickle shaped, which causes them to stick to vessel walls preventing much needed oxygen from
traveling through the body. Thalassemias has normal looking red blood cells, but the body does not
make enough healthy cells or hemoglobin. This means there is a lack of oxygen because the body does
not produce enough blood or hemoglobin to carry it throughout the body. The two diseases have basic
similarities reflected by the concepts regarding diagnosing and treatment plans. They also differ in
many ways; for example, Sickle Cell consist of more complications than the Thalassemias disorder.
Thalassemia, however, affects more ethnic backgrounds and numbers of the afflicted are spread over a
greater geographical area. Sickle Cell and Thalassemia can be diagnosed by a blood test that checks
for certain genetic markers. Generally a person will have two hemoglobin genes. If testing determined
you are missing one, or both, then you are either a carrier or you have Thalassemia. Sickle Cell testing
does not look for missing genes, as in testing for Thalassemia, it is looking for an abnormal
hemoglobin gene. If you have one or both of these genes, the result is the same as Thalassemia, you
are either a carrier or you have the disease. Being a carrier of either of the

Exploring Discovering The Truth, Or The Myth Of The Architect
The answer to this question lies in whether you are interested in discovering the truth, or the myth of
the architect. Whilst cold hard facts might present a very honest and factual catalogue of the architect
and their work, it will ultimately create a very clinical and impersonal image of their character. This
can lead to what Thomas S. Hines understands to be a debunking of almost everything, including,
sometimes the magic, the poetry and the genius behind the architect and their work. However, a piece
of writing in which the truth has been manipulated, especially when it is by the hand of architects
themselves, can provide something more than just a black and white description of their life s work
and achievements, it can give us a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I will also be looking at other biographies by architectural historians and critics that are far more
concerned with a true and factual account of his life. Letters and academic essays are other genres of
writing that need to be considered. As many personal letters show us the very close interactions
between Wright s clients and co workers and also his buildings. Essays give us a clear overview and
insight into Wright, often bringing together many resources giving us a more well rounded and
balanced view of him. However, depending on the critic they can highlight his extraordinary ability to
synthesize and transform as something mythical the truth or with a harsh analytical approach, and a
keen thirst for the truth, can pursue the debunking of almost everything that Wright claims.
Starting with An Autobiography we are able to understand immediately how Wright wants the public
to perceive his image and his work, be it from the humble life on the farm to the wooden engravings
that graced the walls of little Frank s room embellishing his life long destiny to be a great architect.
Everything in An Autobiography is designed and engineered by Wright to construct the image of
himself and his work that he wanted the public to receive. This shows us the power that the architect
holds as the author of the text. Wright alone has the ability to manipulate the truth about his
architecture and his personal life in his

Noland V., 2006).
Muscle Endurance Muscular endurance is the ability of the muscles to keep working for an extended
time(Phentice H. Needham M.,1997).It can increase depends on the strength of the muscle and
through changes in local metabolic and circulatory function. Exercise will increase blood flow and
enhance the capacity of the muscle fibers to generate and store more energy that allows the muscle to
endure continuous use of muscle in longer period of time (Weir, 2010).
Muscle Size Another effect of exercise to muscular system is the enlargement of the muscle. As
regular as you do an exercise in the gym by lifting weights, your body will continue adding size to
meet the imposed demand (Jordan T.S.).Having a long term exercise can generate muscle fibers
growth known as hypertrophy. Having a resistance training will increase overall synthesis which is the
main building block for muscle. When you lift an overload weights it will increase the number of
contractile filaments with in the muscle cells. This will make the enlargement of muscle cells that
makes the entire muscle larger(Weir J., 2010).
Muscle Nerve Interaction To improve the strength of the muscle of the muscle, it s also needed the
good performance of nervous System. Increasing of maximal force production can give a good
recruitment of nerve fibers. Strengthening trainings improves the ability of the body to call on more

Russian Mafia
One of the most famous types of organized crime in the past and present is the Russian Mafia . This
article entails the rational choice theory model with how it justifies being able to join the Russian
Mafia and the business that they conduct. A rational theorist would argue that we as people are rational
human beings who carefully calculated the consequences of our behaviour. We make choices based on
the cost benefit analysis. The concept of the cost benefit analysis is that when we have to make a
choice, that choice is weighted between the cost and benefit of the decision that is made. In dealing
with the Russian Mafia, making the decision of being involved in a criminal activity would pivot if the
benefit of the crime was greater ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the period in which capitalism started to take place, middle class business owners turned to the
Russian Mafia for private protection. Making a connection between the citizens of Russia and the
Russian Mafia is difficult. We must make a connection between the social contract of the people of
Russia and the Russian Mafia. We must also figure out why the citizens turn to the Russian Mafia for
protection. There was a period in Russia when private property was ubiquitous in the modern days, so
there was a large demand of trust and protection, which in fact wasn t being provided by the state. The
state was not providing the citizens with enough protection and the crime rates in Russia showed proof
of that. In 1989, the crime rate increased by 32 %, and the total report crimes rose by 70.5 % from
1989 1992. The citizens of Russia began to grow fearful of something happening to their property.
This is where the Russian Mafia comes in for the citizens of Russia. Therefore, the demand for the
protection of the Russian Mafia rose, especially from business owners. As business would continue to
grow and expand, the state, specifically, the law enforcement agencies were unable to provide
protection and security, which would lead to the creation of the Mafia organizations. Beccaria believed
that the role of law should be prescribing specific punishment for specific crimes. The foundation for

History of Reverb and Echo in Audio Production Recording...
History of Reverb and Echo in Audio Production Recording Natural occurring reverb goes further
back than man on earth. Since before man, creatures and nature made sounds that created natural
reverb and echo. But now in today s age with men and the modern technology that they have created
there are all sorts of ways to create reverb and echo. From big metal sheets to plug ins in a DAW on a
computer, engineers have found ways to incorporate and benefit from reverb and echo on a recorded
audio track. But before skipping into today s ways of recording reverb and echo let s shed some light
on what reverb and echo truly is and where it came from. Reverberation or as most people refer to it as
reverb, refers to the way sound waves reflects of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A reverb chamber is a hollow arena used to create echoing sounds. Building a room with non parallel
surfaces and then applying shellac to all the surfaces so make them acoustically reflective creates an
echo/reverb chamber. A speaker and microphones in the room would pick up the reflection of the
speakers output this method was very popular in the 60 s. Soon enough a new technology of reverb
came about, Spring reverb. Sam Phillips of Sun Records had used tape echo when recording Elvis in
the early days. Spring reverb is a type of electromechanical reverb device. It creates a reverb effect by
inducing sound vibrations at one end of a long wire (which is coiled into a spring to decrease the
amount of area it takes up, that s why it is called spring reverb). Another transducer at the extreme end
picks up the vibrations. As the waves reflect back and forth from one end of the spring to the other,
and back, a reverb effect is produced. Spring reverbs have a harsh, trebly sound (and vulnerable to
exterior shock), but they are inexpensive to build and provided a new way for reverb. Eventually the
technology became more advanced and a new form of reverb was created; plate reverb changed the
reverb game in 1957 when German company EMT (Elektromesstecknik) released the first plate
reverb, EMT 140 Reverberation Unit. This plate reverb system used an electromechanical transducer
to create vibration in a large plate of

polish remover, hair spray, cleaning fluids, spray paint, and the propellant in aerosol whipped cream (

the chemical s mind altering effects (National Institute on Drug Abuse [NIDA], 2010). The trend in
inhalant abuse is growing among the young community throughout the country. Surveys have shown
in 2008 2 million Americans of 12 or over reported using inhalants (NIDA, 2010). Young children

Nitrites are a group of chemicals including cyclohexyl nitrite, amyl nitrite, and butyl nitrite. Instead of
acting on the central nervous system for the euphoric effect, nitrites dilate blood vessels, relax the
muscles, and are used for sexual enhancement (NDIC, 2001). Amyl nitrite consists of a clear,
yellowish liquid that is sold in a cloth, covered sealed bulb. This type of nitrite is also known as a
snapper or popper because the bulb makes a snapping sound when it is broken (Missouri Department
of Mental Health, n.d.). On the other hand, butyl nitrite comes in small bottles sold as video head
cleaner, room odorizer, leather cleaner and liquid aroma (NIDA, 2010). One category may sound
worse than the other, but in reality they are all equally harmful and all cause short term and long term
effects to a person s health.
All effects of inhalants are harmful to the body. However, the short term effects on a person can be
brutal. Immediately after inhaling, users feel intoxication and other side effects. These effects include
slurred speech, dizziness, confusion, and uncoordinated movements. Furthermore, users may also
experience nausea, vomiting, lightheadedness, hallucinations, and delusions ( Inhalants , 2010). Loss
of inhibition has been reported by users as well as drowsiness and headaches. When a person inhales
nitrites, the blood vessels are dilated, the heart rate is increased, and there is a sensation of heat and
excitement that lasts several

The Global Environment, Differentiation, Low Cost...
In today`s global environment, differentiation, low cost leadership, and responsiveness are among
three major characteristics of an organisation that aims to achieve a competitive advantage over its
competitors. Organisations also endeavour to reduce lead time and their direct and indirect costs,
increase return on investment as well as customer satisfaction, improve quality and reliability of their
products. However they also need to consider social, environmental and ethical concerns and establish
a company mission and vision in such a way that mitigate these concerns while achieving a
competitive advantage.
Strategies through achieving a competitive advantage resulted in the existence of the terms
`Globalisation` and supply chain management (SCM). Because in today`s emerging and industrialized
environment companies seek to achieve competitive advantages and are no longer competing with
their own expertise but with the talent in their entire global supply chain. [1]
Another reason why the importance of SCM has been highlighted is that most of the companies need
other manufacturers or companies from which they can supply raw materials, sub assemblies and
components, finished goods, or equipment in order to keep their production in working order, achieve
their business objectives and goals and customer satisfaction, and meet customers` rapidly changing
requirements at right time, cost and quality. In such circumstances, the commercial distance in the

Sexual Abuse And Domestic Violence
People who experience sexual abuse or domestic violence always blame themselves due to guilt and
low self esteem, also because the abuser is very dominant and can make the victim believe that it s
their fault. As Lievore suggested a few number of personal barriers:
 Humiliation, awkwardness;
 Thinking that what their partner is doing is not a crime and shouldn t be report as they d refuse to
testify against them.
 They don t want other people knowing.
 Blaming themselves or believe that other people would blame them for it.
 Going through the situation quietly and not sharing it with anyone else
 Making excuses or protecting the abuser. (Lievore 2003) And a few barriers at the level of the
justice system include:
 Thinking that the police wouldn t be able to help
 Dread of being treated badly by others or looked down upon
 Scared of legal procedures
 Not having enough evidence to prove the incident
 Not being aware of the reporting system (Lievore 2003)

Questions On The Cavity Wall Insulation
Cavity Wall Insulation could be a remedy for the energy poverty undergone by many homes in
Ireland. Available statistics show over 60,000 low income and 160,000 other homes suffer from
energy poverty. This invariably affects their health, indoor comforts while causing huge wastage of
limited earnings. Insulation In general and cavity wall insulation in particular will help you if you are
one of the above house holders.
SEAI offers special grants for up to Euro 400 to meet your home improvements by cavity wall
insulation. The installations have to be carried out by qualified installers as special tools are required
to carry this out. Under no circumstance this is a DIY job even for a person good with their hands.
Cavity walls
A cavity wall can be a construction of two walls with an air gap in between or a wall constructed of
hollow blocks. The air gap in this manner should be continuous for any effective cavity wall insulation
to be carried out.
How are the Cavity walls insulated?
The cavity wall insulation is applied in several ways depending on the type and construction of wall,
type of insulation selected etc. What ever the material selected the idea is to cut off heat transfer by
cutting off the heat transfer primarily, by conduction (ie. by physical contact) and convection (ie. by
the movement of hot air (molecules) due to air currents). Naturally unless there is a continuous cavity
this process has limited detrimental affect as the heat by air movement is limited to

No person in the U.S. shall, on the basis of sex be excluded from participation in, or denied the

Athletics has created the most controversy regarding Title IX, but its gains in education and academics

On the 25th anniversary of Title IX it seems fitting to suggest that America is a more equal, more
educated and more prosperous nation because of the far reaching effects of this legislation.
Much has been accomplished in the classroom and on the playing field and we have many reasons to
celebrate the success of Title IX in expanding our nation s definition of equality. With Title IX, we
affirm what can be accomplished when we allow all Americans men and women an equal opportunity
to be their best.
What is significant about the progress that has been achieved since Title IX was passed in 1972 is that
there has been a lot of change in the expectations of what women can and have been achieving. It is
important to note that women have shown the skeptics many times that females are fully capable of
being involved, successful active participants in every realm of American life. Women astronauts from
Mae Jamison to Sally Ride have made their marks in space. The Women s National Soccer team
achieved Olympic glory as well as a World Championship. Women are involved in the medical and
legal professions in record numbers. There has also been an increase in women s participation in

discrimination in federally assisted education programs. Title IX was modeled on Title VI of

The Azusa Street Revival
Allan Anderson, a reader at the Graduate Institute for Theology and Religion, states that
Pentecostalism received global recognition during the events at Azusa Street in spite of having various
origins in the beginning of the twentieth century (Anderson 180). The intense apocalyptic eschatology
of the Pentecostals thus created a self appraisal that their movement was something profoundly
original and which had few precedents in Christian history, suggests Steven Hunt, author of A History
of the Charismatic Movement in Britain and the United States of America (117). Joe Creech, a

Gorman reports that manifestation of the Holy Spirit took precedence over the rules of dogma. He
explains that the unorthodox church practices, which allowed any person to speak behind a pulpit,
created discord among the congregation (Gorman 520). Ben Pugh, a Lecturer in Theology at Cliff
College, UK, describes how William Seymour implemented a third aspect of the evidence of speaking
in tongues to the Wesleyan belief system (Pugh 17). Hegertun explains that rather than attacking the
dogmatic positions of others the evidence of the Holy Spirit and charismatic gifting served as
justification of their theology (37 38). Pugh states that the trifold aspect of theology is implemented to

by 1910, the end result would be a metamorphosis of American Pentecostals to the trifold model of
sanctification (Pugh 17). Hunt explains that receiving the gift of utterance, according to Synan, is the

Ecotopia Big Wood Summary
In my excerpt of the reading, In Ecotopia s Big Wood s, Weston laments on Ecotopia s vast forests that
are treated with human dignity. The forests are looked at in a religious matter and treated like family.
The logging system includes education on the importance of trees in nature and how they must be
preserved by any means necessary. Weston even writes about a young man, who he points out did not
seem under the influence, leaning on a tree and saying, Brother Tree! . This appears to be the
consensus of every citizen in Ecotopia. The scientists of Ecotopia have even developed biodegradable
plastics out of tree pulp. Trees and the forests of Ecotopia are without a doubt a major factor in the
Ecotopian economy. Weston points out that in the America of the time, and arguably the America of
today, would find this to be not only a huge contradiction but also an economic penalty as a waste of
time. In America, time is money and the time it takes to reforest a logged forest, let alone teaching
those who are doing the logging about the importance of the forest would be looked at as a waste of
time and therefore money.
However, Weston appears to be appreciating this sentiment the Ecotopian society attributes to their
way of life and social norms. I read a few more excerpts from the book because I found it very
interesting how similar Ecotopia is to modern California s, and the northwest in general for that
matter, approach to environmentalism. Although Ecotopia is an exaggerated version of modern day
California, it is without a doubt based on what California was becoming and eventually became.
Recycling bins everywhere, civilized hippies starting their own communities in Northern California,
etc. Ecotopia is without a doubt based on California and the rest of the North West.
Being from the East Coast, I could vaguely relate to Weston in my shock of how different the same
country could be depending on the coast you resided on. I m not sure how many other states make you
pay for bags at the store, but I can assure you that much of the South and Southwest would have a
heart attack if they had to pay for their own bags. I consider myself an extremely Green individual,

The Relationship Between Government Revenue From Taxes And...
The Laffer curve is a concept which explains the relationship between government revenue from taxes
and tax rates. The concept of the Laffer curve is that the higher the tax rate is the lower the output, that
is to say for example, if the government imposed a higher tax rate, production would be lower and
government revenue would therefore be lower. The Laffer curve was developed by an economist by
the name of Arthur Laffer, a professor at the University of Chicago. Arthur Laffer does not take all
credit for this theory, he claimed it was not new and that the concept was pretty straightforward and
people already knew about it many years ago. The origin of the Laffer curve goes back to an article
written by Jude Wanniski, associate editor of the Wall street journal at that time. Sometime in
December of 1974, Wanniski had dinner with Laffer, Donald Rumsfeld who was the chief of staff to
president Gerald Ford, and Rumsfeld s deputy Dick Cheney, who was a former classmate of Laffer at
Yale. All four were having dinner at a restaurant in Washington D.C. while they were talking about
President Ford s Whip Inflation Now proposal for tax increments then suddenly Laffer grabbed a
napkin and a pen then proceeded to sketch a curve on the napkin about the relationship between tax
rates and tax revenues. Jude Wanniski decided to name this relationship The Laffer Curve . And that is
how The Laffer curve began. Vast majority of companies want to maximize their profit, so it

Tim O brien. Both works of writing display war as a painful and and traumatizing experience.
However, this poem reflects the message in The Things They Carried chapter, Sweetheart of the Song
Tra Bong most accurately. Both the chapter and the poem share the theme that war can take away a
person s humanity. In the lines, We ve dug a hole, called a trench, Humanity is gone, replaced with
stench (Dejnicki) the author is trying to convey that a soldier in war can have their humanity striped
away and uses the symbolism of stench to describe the foul persona that may replace it. In Sweetheart

Batman was created by Bob Kane and is regarded as one of the best comic book characters. Over the

As much as I love Batman comics, movies, and TV series, too many fans have this absurd notion that
he can beat anyone if given prep time. Granted, Batman is one of those type of heroes who has the
ability to outsmart a multitude of villains or other heroes using strategy, detective skills, martial arts,

In reality, Batman only beat the man of steel because he had access to some thing he knew would
diminish his natural power, making him weak in the process. (also a result of the pain) So, technically
his win doesn t count. Not much strategy was needed for what he did in this fight. Depending on how
you play it, anyone could beat Superman when he s like that. If Superman did not have Kryptonite as a
weakness, the dark knight would have been killed or would be left with no choice but to escape. In a
similar scenario, if we were to replace the man of steel with another such as Galactus, or Thanos,
Batman would easily lose this fight because they simply have no exploitable weakness he could use to
beat them. No amount of preparation, technology, or human physicality can compete with a being who
is light years beyond average or Olympic levels of power, specifically godlike entities. Another point
worth noting is Bats track record against foes smarter and more skilled then him. He has been beaten
many times by Slade Wilson a.k.a. Deathstroke, Lady Shiva, and a few others throughout his career
which he has never outsmarted or beaten in a fight.
As he stands, Batman is a symbol, he embodies many of the good qualities as well as physical and
even mental abilities we can all strive to achieve in reality, but with good

The Problems Of Deutsche Bank
The Problems Deutsche Bank is facing:
Global capital markets are being pressured by the travails of Deutsche Bank, one of Europe s largest
investment banks, and there is
yet no clarity on when the coast will clear. The bank s stock has plunged to all time lows as concerns
about liquidity arose for a
firm considered systemically important. The fear is that the German bank could fail and spark a
domino effect that would harm the
global banking system. This worry is heightened as German Chancellor Angela Merkel s
administration has rejected any bail out plan.
Problems which have been facing by the bank as follows:
Huge fine of $14 billion faced by the Bank, prompting fear of a new financial crisis by US regulatory
body:
Deutsche Bank, Germany s largest bank, is facing its biggest crisis since the global financial
meltdown in 2008. US regulators were
seeking to fine the company $14 billion not just a large sum of money but actually enough to
fundamentally threaten the viability
of the bank. And that was only the latest in a series of setbacks that have cost the company s stock
more than half its value over the
past year.
A year ago, the company announced plans to lay off 35,000 people shortly after announcing a $7
billion quarterly loss. In November,
the bank agreed to pay a $258 million fine for violating US sanctions laws. In June it failed a US
regulatory stress test designed to
predict whether it would survive a major economic downturn. And now Deutsche Bank

Disadvantages Of CPEC
According to reported in The News, 65 countries are the part of One Belt, One Road project and 60%
of world s GDP is contributing by these countries this will have an impact on Pakistan s economy too
as Pakistan has become center of attraction for many foreign investors after CPEC.
According to Shyam Bhagat China is heavily using under utilized capacity of its own industry and
manpower through CPEC as all material and goods and work force and there is no guarantee either
Pakistani labor will be recruited or no. So all the money invested by China will go back to China with
interest.
CPEC will not only have investment from China but it will act as catalyst to attract foreign direct
investment from other countries as well.

According to Abdul Ghani Chohan, once CPEC will successfully implemented it will prove as
geopolitical game changer as it will impart an alternative route to South China Sea and Strait of
Malacca which will immensely minimize the shipping cost of oil, goods and gas.
Pakistan needs to safeguard its national interest and international relations as too much reliance on
China is not good. Pakistan has to balance its relations with west and China as one sphere influence
would result to damage relation. Pakistan needs to play as diplomatic balancer to get the best from
both powers.
According to Abdul Ghani Chohan, since its inception Pakistan mostly relies on loans and foreign aid
but this time situation is different for taking loan from China as this time the lender country is directly
investing in the project which will make the use of this money more transparent and there will be
minimal probability of corruption.
Due to CPEC, the native Baloch people are also have many concerns due to the policies adopted by
the Government, the behavior of Government has further raised the sense of

The Battle Of War And War
There are many different components to war, far beyond the soldiers and battlefields. Soldiers at war
may make the ultimate sacrifice in the sequence of battle, but societies at war deal with the
compromise. War requires more non renewable resources than any other industry in the world, the
most abundant of those resources being humans. Since July 4, 1776 the US has been in some sort of
conflict for 222 of the 239 years since that day. Humans require more basic necessities than any other
living organism on the planet. The resources necessary to support a war are endless and can have
massive affects on industry, geopolitical structure, populations, educational institutions, and much,
much more. With The US having actively participated in war almost the entirety of its existence, war
has been impacting everyone and everything in existence be it living or not. Humans alone, without
the resources necessary to participate in war, require at least sustenance and shelter just to sustain life.
Beyond that there are human needs such as clothing and skills to sustain life within a society. For each
of these individuals it is mandatory to obtain one outfit of clothing, one meal a day that is sufficient
enough to avoid poor nutrition, one place to sleep. For the women and women of our armed forces
these needs are met and merely more. At three meals a day, a place to sleep usually four or more to
one room, and three daily outfits including footwear, we can see the military is rather

Leap Of The Brethren Pantry Summary
Least of the Brethren is a local food pantry in Pinkneyville, it is where I am choosing to plunge for my
assignment. I am choosing this culture because of the high number of low socioeconomic students that
attend school in our area. I feel it is important to understand the needs in our area in order to connect
with future students and their families. To be very honest, I know there is a great need for support in
our area. However, I assume the families that need this support also receive government assistance
through programs such as WIC and Link. Plunging into this culture I hope to gain a better
understanding of why pantries are still needed and how I can become more active in addressing the
need locally. With the knowledge I hope to gain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the break the volunteers asked us several questions. From what I gathered all of the volunteers
also need the assistance of the pantry. Many asked us how they could help us, assuming we had fallen
on hard times. I assured them they we were just there to help them and donate our time. Volunteers
receive each goods in their boxes in return for their help.
Application of Plunge Experience Prior to taking the plunge I was not aware that even with
government programs there is still a need for pantries in our local area. This brings a very large
challenge to my educational environment. I will need to find out which students will require this need
to be addressed. As a classroom teacher, I will need to bring awareness to the students that do not have
this need that a part of their role in our community is to help those in need. This can be done through
volunteering and donations.
The challenge that individuals from the group will bring to the education environment is one that
directly impact their learning. It is well understood that children cannot learn until their most basic
needs are met. Yes, we offer free breakfast to students, but many arrive too late to receive this service
and often one muffin is not enough to address their hunger. This plunge made me aware of the
challenges many students will face in my

Analysis Of The Movie Silver Linings Playbook
A life interchanging from high to low, happy to sad, to the brink of exploding with euphoria to the
lowest low, is the life of a human living with Bipolar disorder. This roller coaster of emotions is
inevitable and almost unlikely to cure in terms of later onset. Living with any personality disorder puts
strain and hardship on your loved ones and is more then anyone would want to deal with in their short
lifetime. These disorders are more common than we know and the way they are treated will determine
the individual s psychological outcome. The movie Silver Linings Playbook does a great job depicting
a character with Bipolar disorder and the struggles the main character Pat faces on a day to day basis
through his road to recovery. Silver Linings Playbook displays many types of psychological disorders
that include Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Bipolar disorder, and a slight sexual disorder. Bradley
Cooper does an exceptional job playing the role of Pat Solitano, a bipolar patient who has just been
released from a psychiatric ward after almost killing another man for sleeping with his wife. He plans
to relive his past and thinks that nothing has changed since he has been gone, a common occurrence of
a subject with bipolar disorder. On his journey he is set up with the character Tiffany, played by
Jennifer Lawrence. She is a recently widowed woman that uses sex as a way of coping with her loss.
These two characters connect throughout the movie and develop a relationship

Bill Russell And The Civil Rights Movement Essay
On May 6, 1999, Bill Russell, the man who redefineed the center by his unique shot blocking, man to
man defense and rebounding ability, and contributed to his team Celtics by his outstanding
performance and remarkable leadership, finally attended his own retirement ceremony after 27 years
of retirement. This great man in the history of American basketball refused to have a ceremony in
1972 in Boston, the city he perceived as the racist city , because of his concern of discrimination. On
February 15th, 2011, Bill Russell received the Medal of Freedom from President Obama for his
contribution to civil rights movement. Obama described him as the man who stand up for the dignity
of all men . From being insulted, being refused in restaurants during tournaments, intimidating the
world with his long arms and strong opinions, to challenging the politics of sports and fighting against
racism, it has been a long way for Bill Russell, for American basketball, and for American society.
Basketball, one of the major sports in America, presents the civil rights breakthrough both in
professional games and in colleges. The book King of the Courts: Bill Russell and the Basketball
Revolution by Aram Goudsouzian and Getting Open: The Unknown Story of Bill Garrett and the
Integration of College Basketball by Tom Graham, and Rachel Graham Cody, reveal the story of how
two of the greatest players in the history of American basketball, broke the color barriers in basketball
and foster the

Analysis Of Uncle Tom s Cabin By Harriet Beecher Stowe
Harriet Beecher Stowe was an author during the 1800s and wrote Uncle Tom s Cabin which was far
ahead of its time and depicted the evils of slavery. Harriet Beecher Stowe was born on June 14th, 1811
in Litchfield, Connecticut as the seventh child of Lyman and Roxana Beecher. Being that she was born
in the North to extremely religious parents, she too of course was quite religious as well as an
abolitionist. Unlike most women of her time period, Harriet Beecher Stowe was educated at a school
for girls in all of the classic subjects(language, math, etc.). Later in her life, Stowe moved to
Cincinnati, Ohio where Irish riots against black people contributed to her ideas of slavery and her
abolitionist novels. One day, while in a literary club, Stowe

Okonkwo Gender Roles
Rather early in the story, Things Fall Apart, we are met with this line his whole life was dominated by
fear, the fear of failure and of weakness . This line is referring to the life of the main character,
Okonkwo, who struggles with an internal fear throughout the book. This line from the story, in my
opinion, for shadows a lot of themes and motives that take place through out the story. Most
specifically I think this line can be applied to the theme of gender that is pushed during the entirety of
the book. Gender plays a big role within the tribes and within Okonkwo s life, I say this because most
things that Okonkwo does or events that take place in the tribe have some aspect of a gender role
applied to them. This idea of gender roles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With all of this being said about gender roles I believe that the line his whole life was dominated by
fear, the fear of failure and of weakness points to the idea that Okonkwo saw it as a failure and a
weakness to show emotion and to show a feminine side. Okonkwo wants to project this hyper
masculine self and reject anything feminine leaving him with imbalances. When I say imbalances I
mean things like that fact that he beats his wife and alienates his sons. I believe that the overall fear of
being feminine stems from the fear of being like his father, who was considered a weak man.
Continuing with the line his whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and of weakness ,
Okonkwo is overcome with the fear of becoming his father, who is considered a weak and lazy man.
Okonkwo lets this fear overcome him and causes him to project the hyper masculine tendencies that
he displays. The fear of being weak and lazy pushed him to the point that he takes part in the murder
of his adopted son, Ikemefuna. Okonkwo s inability to let go of this fear ultimately leads him to his

  • 2. Rhetorical Analysis of Cultural Baggage Essay Jenny Stout Professor Bowers English 1102 5 September 2014 Rhetorical Analysis In Barbara Ehrenreich s Cultural baggage, the topic of ethnic heritage is discussed as the author is responding to an acquaintance asking her what her ethnic background is. Ehrenreich finds her purpose for writing her essay in making readers aware that no ethnic background is in fact a background. She takes on a not so common viewpoint of herself as most people pride themselves in where they came from and the traditions of their culture, rather than feeling almost embarrassed to claim their background. Ehrenreich claims that she has no ethnic background, disregarding her Scottish, English, and Irish heritage. While others stand up and proudly reclaim ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ehrenreich was finally able to feel a sense of pride knowing that the race of none marches on. The author wrote her essay including several references to certain traditions that different cultures practice. The audience is assumed to have some general knowledge of different cultures, but nothing to extensive. The author also assumes that the audience is somewhat well educated due to the higher level word choices she makes. Ehrenreich is describing her realization of heritage to her audience in the possible hopes that the readers can either relate in some way or share some of the excitement that she does in her own ethnicity, or lack of. Ehrenreich was able to make her point that she does in fact have an ethnicity other than Scottish, English and Irish. It was intriguing to see the progression in the essay from the authors feeling of disconnect with her heritage to a sense of pride in her family that refrains from carrying on cultural activities. She recognizes where she came from and concludes that no tradition is a tradition, rather than trying to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Analysis on Swift s Attitude Towards Humanity Analysis on Swift s Attitude towards Humanity Introduction In1726, Jonathan Swift, one of the best known realistic writers in 18th century, published his book Gulliver s Travels which on the surface is a collection of travel journals of a surgeon called Lemuel Gulliver but actually is a work of satire on politics and human nature. In the four incredible adventures, Gulliver s perceptions are tied closely with Swift s shame and disgust against British government and even against the whole of the human condition as Richard Rodino says in his book that Gulliver is neither a fully developed character nor even an altogether distinguishable persona; rather, he is a satiric device enabling Swift to score satirical points. The European moralists say: the nature is degenerated in these latter declining ages of the world, and could now produce only small abortive births in comparison of those ancient times (Swift 187) In Glubbdubdrib, people can make ancients appears with magic, Gulliver makes conversation with ancients, and finds As every person called up made exactly the same appearance he had done in the world, it gave me melancholy reflections to observe how much the race of mankind was degenerated among us, within those hundred years past , how all these pure native virtues were prostituded for a piece of money by their grandchildren (Swift 271) Gulliver is thrown into deep melancholy as he discover the degeneration of human nature. Not only the ancient virtues are lost, but also man s physical condition is becoming worse and worse as Swift points out in Gulliver s fourth voyage to the land of the Houyhnhnms where his satire reaches its pinnacle: I seemed to fail in strength and agility , He said I differed indeed from other Yahoos, being much more cleanly, and not altogether so deformed, but in point of real advantage he thought I differed for the worse. I had my note card with me that really helped me a lot with all my points, hence I could have forgotten everything that I had prepared on the table for the day. It helped me in reviewing all my points one by one. I used the power point method as part of the requirement for the presentation. I mean white guys have been dominating the art world for centuries, so why break the cycle? White men have privilege and history under their belt so they have the time and money to spend studying and thinking about philosophical ideas and theories. Plato says you must understand philosophy to understand beauty and thus only philosophers and statesmen have access to beauty, as though the thought of a black women or a poor man having that consideration is inconceivable. There are three factors Plato describes that be in play in under must take to consider art to be beautiful; techne, the concept of imitative poetic inspiration; and madness. With the first step, Plato is not referring to techno, a form of electronic dance music that emerged in Detroit, Michigan, in the United States during the mid to late 1980s , but techne , the generic idea of art whose principle is measure 2. If you plan to make art, you are required to know what the finished product is going to look like and how you are going to make it before you begin to create it. To know if your art is going to be good before you start making it, Plato references that the fact there must be harmony and balance in art for it to correspond to the principles of measure and proportion. The City of Boston was the first to then set out to lay the groundwork for a progressing fire service. In 1653, Boston instituted multiple codes which equipped buildings with firefighting tools and a central water system. Then, in 1676 a new code issued a requirement for the use of fire resistant material in building construction. Simultaneously in 1676, Boston purchased the first fire pumper which would force water, from a tank, out of a hose. The tank in the pumper would require a supply of water to keep the tank filled. The fire department had no way of obtaining a constant or pressurized water supply, thus, Boston instituted the first paid per diem bucket brigade staffed by twelve men, alongside the first fire captain, Thomas Atkins, who would transport and operate the pump at a fire scene. After the success of the first organized fire department, by 1720, ten new fire stations would develop in Boston consisting of six engines and twenty men, which would assist each other if the fire demanded more manpower. The assisting of each other at fire scenes instituted the rudimentary principle of mutual aid in the fire service, which plays a pivotal role in the fire service today. (Collins ... • 9. A Dystopian Society In Pakistan Imagine, there is a girl and she is stripped from her right to have an education, or there is a women that is castigated for doing something without a man; this is the life Pakistani women and girls face. Pakistan has over the years created a dystopian society for many different reasons. When deciphering how Pakistan and the Taliban make decisions that create a dystopian society among their citizens, one can observe what the leaders of Pakistan did that made the society become dystopian, they can assess what impact these decisions had on Pakistani people and other nations, and one could analyze the way authors delineate dystopia in novels. When evaluating people and government s actions that create dystopian society in Pakistan, one can see the people who suppressed women and examples of the unequal rights and the reasons behind it. In Pakistan, women cannot even walk outside without a male escort. These broad divisions have an umbrella of male chauvinism and defined social roles where women are not perceived as individuals but as mothers, wives, daughters and sisters (Mustafa). These women are being stigmatized, and they seem to have no value as humans. Women are put into unpleasurable, tedious places of work, and are yelled orders. What is even more preposterous is after these long, hard days of work, the women do not even get to keep their money. The money would be put in the hands of the misogynistic men in their life. The chances of women s impartiality are slim ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some of these magical powers included outrageous claims such as flying, being able to transform and cursing bad luck on others. The state interfered, which angered farmers, producers, and merchants and contributed to the grievance against Charles I and the Civil War. The decrease in mortality rates over the over the past 150 yrs. has been attributed to four factors according to the UN report in 1953. Those factors are; 1) public health measures;2) advances in medical knowledge and therapeutics;3) improved personal hygiene; and 4) improved standard of living (p.5). Mckeown and Brown s attempts at understanding why health improved, explored factors which influenced the major decline in mortality rates in the United Kingdom after 1840 (p.5). They cited a large decline in mortality from airborne diseases, water and sanitation systems in the 1800 s and finally concluded that the decrease in mortality was due to improved prosperity and nutrition (p.5). These factors are discussed in modern times as Dr. Steven Woolf gave his testimony to the U.S. Senate in 2013, that as an example, 68% of American adults have income that is more than twice the poverty level. Suppose we boosted that number just slightly, from 68% to 70% and looked at the impact on one disease diabetes. That higher income would mean about 400 million fewer cases of diabetes saving $2 billion per year to treat that disease (p.1). Increasing income contributes to lower health issues and chronic disease. The applied simplistic equation of increased income decreased health issues is phenomenal, but why are we a society in which inequalities in health still ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

John Wright was awfully abusive towards Mrs. Wright, in the means that he required her to live her life comparable to a caged bird. This explains for the reasoning of their house being far set back into the woods and having no telephone service. She ventured out, only when she was allowed, and assuming that John also did not allow her to have friends, this led to the killing of the canary. The quilt is one major clue as to how Minnie killed her husband. The women were trying to figure out if she was going to sew or not the quilt. However, despite those differences, both cultures share some similarities. The link between the Indian culture in Nectar in a Sieve and Greek culture is the fact that both cultures are polytheistic, meaning that they worship more than one god. For instance, in Nectar in a Sieve, a massive storm came upon the village where Ruku (main character) and her family lived, which caused the destruction of their home and more importantly the crops, which provided them with food in order to survive. Allopatric Speciation refers to an outside source begetting geographic separation between two or more groups of animals obviating them from copulating with each other and leading to the speciation of their lineage (University of California Museum of Paleontology, 2016a). In contrast, Sympatric Speciation does not involve physical separation, but instead occurs when development of a habitat reduces gene flow between a species (University of California Museum of Paleontology, 2016e). • 18. Analysis Of Daniel Kahneman s The Surety Of Fools Voltaire once said, Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is an absurd one. We live in a world that is constantly changing and does not grant the certainty that people desire. But, people want the stability of knowing what is going to happen; this is why certainty is absurd. In his essay The Surety of Fools, Daniel Kahneman provides examples of people using a phenomenon he calls the illusion of validity. These people strongly believe their actions cause a specific outcome, when in reality there is statistical evidence that shows their actions have no direct correlation with the outcome. While Kahneman argues the illusion of validity comes partially from people s tendency to make quick decisions without fully conveying the causes, it really stems from people s fear of uncertainty from having a lack of knowledge. Other fields of academia, such as science and economics, have admitted that uncertainty grounds their thinking processes. Kahneman is inaccurate in neglecting to mention that it is the fear of uncertainty that really causes the illusion of validity. Kahneman argues that the illusion of validity comes from fast thinking because it is prone to doubt. Meaning, people naturally think quickly because they need a reason and so they do not have time to question their explanation. However, Kahneman neglects to mention that fast thinking roots itself in the fear of uncertainty. Kahneman begins his essay by describing his experience in evaluating ... Dennis O Rouke s Cannibal Tours Dennis O Rouke s documentary Cannibal Tours , filmed in 1988, the famous director at the time had much thought in regards to how the civilized tourists diminished the primitives and their culture. The documentary is based on the experiences of European tourists as they traveled through the boundaries of Sepik River in New Papua, Guiana. In the documentary, at first it appears to be that the Europeans want to learn more about the culture of the natives in the land and to better understand their way of life. • 20. Character Analysis Of The Snow In Trapped, By Michael... It was one of those bull s eyes in history, one of those points where everything comes together, where, if you were at that place at that time, you were part of something big. It meant that we weren t going to get picked up, not on that day and maybe not ever (Northrop 1). The mood created by Northrop in Trapped is displayed to the readers as negative vibe. Being trapped at a school in a blizzard is obviously not a good thing. So, as a visual representation to the teenagers situation, the snow is described negatively too. In the book Trapped, Michael Northrop uses the snow to symbolize dreadful times and loneliness. Throughout the text, Michael mentions the snow. Considering the book s about a blizzard, that d be normal, right? However, in my view, the snow symbolizes something, like dreadful times. Scattered around, the context surrounding the snow can be interpreted as how you feel during those times. For example, later in the book, when the students realize just how bad it is, they explain it as, There was no higher ground, no place left for us to go (Northrop 158). Here, a relation to people feeling as if there s nowhere else to go, so they re trapped in the horrible event occurring can be made. Results tend to be mourning over those poor times in people s lives. Similarly, Michael connects that to how we view bad situations. Early on in the book, description of the snow is showed as it being small flakes , like grains of sugar... the flakes had fattened up and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Living as a black man being employed was one of the most hardest job, this caused a lot of unemployment for the coloured public .The only upper hand crooks had was a job in the ranch, it still was very risky, the boss beat him for no reason, but this was all he could do for a living. Steinbeck often demonstrates towards his audience that Crooks is a victim of isolation and loneliness, this illustrates the high level of prejudice and separation against the black ethnic minority of the 1930s. Crooks use of the word S pose twice in short time to show the emphasis of his feelings. The appearance and physical disability of Crooks also makes him impoverished, he has a crooked back and thus is called by the name Crooks . • 22. Sickle Cell Disease And Cancer Sickle Cell Disease and Thalassemias Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and Thalassemias are similar blood disorders with some important differences. Sickle Cell Disease is a disorder where the red blood cells are sickle shaped, which causes them to stick to vessel walls preventing much needed oxygen from traveling through the body. Thalassemias has normal looking red blood cells, but the body does not make enough healthy cells or hemoglobin. This means there is a lack of oxygen because the body does not produce enough blood or hemoglobin to carry it throughout the body. The two diseases have basic similarities reflected by the concepts regarding diagnosing and treatment plans. They also differ in many ways; for example, Sickle Cell consist of more complications than the Thalassemias disorder. Thalassemia, however, affects more ethnic backgrounds and numbers of the afflicted are spread over a greater geographical area. Sickle Cell and Thalassemia can be diagnosed by a blood test that checks for certain genetic markers. Generally a person will have two hemoglobin genes. If testing determined you are missing one, or both, then you are either a carrier or you have Thalassemia. Sickle Cell testing does not look for missing genes, as in testing for Thalassemia, it is looking for an abnormal hemoglobin gene. If you have one or both of these genes, the result is the same as Thalassemia, you are either a carrier or you have the disease. Being a carrier of either of the Parks 2 genes ... Making a connection between the citizens of Russia and the Russian Mafia is difficult. We must make a connection between the social contract of the people of Russia and the Russian Mafia. We must also figure out why the citizens turn to the Russian Mafia for protection. There was a period in Russia when private property was ubiquitous in the modern days, so there was a large demand of trust and protection, which in fact wasn t being provided by the state. The state was not providing the citizens with enough protection and the crime rates in Russia showed proof of that. In 1989, the crime rate increased by 32 %, and the total report crimes rose by 70.5 % from 1989 1992. The citizens of Russia began to grow fearful of something happening to their property. This is where the Russian Mafia comes in for the citizens of Russia. Therefore, the demand for the protection of the Russian Mafia rose, especially from business owners. Building a room with non parallel surfaces and then applying shellac to all the surfaces so make them acoustically reflective creates an echo/reverb chamber. A speaker and microphones in the room would pick up the reflection of the speakers output this method was very popular in the 60 s. Soon enough a new technology of reverb came about, Spring reverb. Sam Phillips of Sun Records had used tape echo when recording Elvis in the early days. Spring reverb is a type of electromechanical reverb device. It creates a reverb effect by inducing sound vibrations at one end of a long wire (which is coiled into a spring to decrease the amount of area it takes up, that s why it is called spring reverb). Another transducer at the extreme end picks up the vibrations. As the waves reflect back and forth from one end of the spring to the other, and back, a reverb effect is produced. Spring reverbs have a harsh, trebly sound (and vulnerable to exterior shock), but they are inexpensive to build and provided a new way for reverb. Eventually the technology became more advanced and a new form of reverb was created; plate reverb changed the reverb game in 1957 when German company EMT (Elektromesstecknik) released the first plate reverb, EMT 140 Reverberation Unit. The forests are looked at in a religious matter and treated like family. The logging system includes education on the importance of trees in nature and how they must be preserved by any means necessary. Weston even writes about a young man, who he points out did not seem under the influence, leaning on a tree and saying, Brother Tree! . This appears to be the consensus of every citizen in Ecotopia. The scientists of Ecotopia have even developed biodegradable plastics out of tree pulp. Trees and the forests of Ecotopia are without a doubt a major factor in the Ecotopian economy. Weston points out that in the America of the time, and arguably the America of today, would find this to be not only a huge contradiction but also an economic penalty as a waste of time. In America, time is money and the time it takes to reforest a logged forest, let alone teaching those who are doing the logging about the importance of the forest would be looked at as a waste of time and therefore money. However, Weston appears to be appreciating this sentiment the Ecotopian society attributes to their way of life and social norms. I read a few more excerpts from the book because I found it very interesting how similar Ecotopia is to modern California s, and the northwest in general for that matter, approach to environmentalism. Although Ecotopia is an exaggerated version of modern day California, it is without a doubt based on what California was becoming and eventually became. Recycling bins everywhere, civilized hippies starting their own communities in Northern California, etc. Ecotopia is without a doubt based on California and the rest of the North West. • 39. The Relationship Between Government Revenue From Taxes And... The Laffer curve is a concept which explains the relationship between government revenue from taxes and tax rates. The concept of the Laffer curve is that the higher the tax rate is the lower the output, that is to say for example, if the government imposed a higher tax rate, production would be lower and government revenue would therefore be lower. The Laffer curve was developed by an economist by the name of Arthur Laffer, a professor at the University of Chicago. Arthur Laffer does not take all credit for this theory, he claimed it was not new and that the concept was pretty straightforward and people already knew about it many years ago. The origin of the Laffer curve goes back to an article written by Jude Wanniski, associate editor of the Wall street journal at that time. Sometime in December of 1974, Wanniski had dinner with Laffer, Donald Rumsfeld who was the chief of staff to president Gerald Ford, and Rumsfeld s deputy Dick Cheney, who was a former classmate of Laffer at Yale. All four were having dinner at a restaurant in Washington D.C. while they were talking about President Ford s Whip Inflation Now proposal for tax increments then suddenly Laffer grabbed a napkin and a pen then proceeded to sketch a curve on the napkin about the relationship between tax rates and tax revenues. Jude Wanniski decided to name this relationship The Laffer Curve . And that is how The Laffer curve began. Vast majority of companies want to maximize their profit, so it ... • 40. Comparing The Things They Carried And Sorrow By Tim O The poem Sorrow by Martin Dejnicki shares many similar themes with The Things They Carried by Tim O brien. Both works of writing display war as a painful and and traumatizing experience. However, this poem reflects the message in The Things They Carried chapter, Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong most accurately. Both the chapter and the poem share the theme that war can take away a person s humanity. In the lines, We ve dug a hole, called a trench, Humanity is gone, replaced with stench (Dejnicki) the author is trying to convey that a soldier in war can have their humanity striped away and uses the symbolism of stench to describe the foul persona that may replace it. In Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong, Tim O brien writes [Mary Anne] had crossed to the other side. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She was ready for the kill (O brien 184). This quote reflects a similar message to the poem; Mary Anne was once a beautiful innocent girl, yet being in the war had stiped her humanity and replaced it with a stench that made her savage like. Another quote from Sorrow, Pain around us is draining but real, craving silence, and a good meal. can be compared to the part in Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong where Mary Anne s pain of being stuck between her life at home and her new life in the jungle of Vietnam has began to drain her and she starts to wander at all hours of the day and night to find solitude and silence in the jungle. When I m out at night, I feel close to my own body, I can feel my blood moving, my skin and fingernails, everything, it s like I m full of electricity and I m glowing in the dark I m on fire almost I m burning away into nothing (O brien 150). This quote reveals that Mary Anne enjoys being out late at night in the silence of the jungle, the part I m on fire almost I m burning away into nothing is a symbol of the complex feelings she gets when she s out there, that will someday consume her until she is not herself anymore. • 41. Is Batman A Hero Batman was created by Bob Kane and is regarded as one of the best comic book characters. Over the years he has been known for taking on impossible odds for any human to face, often winning each time, but can he really beat anyone? As much as I love Batman comics, movies, and TV series, too many fans have this absurd notion that he can beat anyone if given prep time. Granted, Batman is one of those type of heroes who has the ability to outsmart a multitude of villains or other heroes using strategy, detective skills, martial arts, and technology, but even with all this in his favor there are many characters he will never be able to beat who are either superior to him in these areas or have way too much power for him to compensate for. Many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In reality, Batman only beat the man of steel because he had access to some thing he knew would diminish his natural power, making him weak in the process. (also a result of the pain) So, technically his win doesn t count. Not much strategy was needed for what he did in this fight. Depending on how you play it, anyone could beat Superman when he s like that. If Superman did not have Kryptonite as a weakness, the dark knight would have been killed or would be left with no choice but to escape. In a similar scenario, if we were to replace the man of steel with another such as Galactus, or Thanos, Batman would easily lose this fight because they simply have no exploitable weakness he could use to beat them. No amount of preparation, technology, or human physicality can compete with a being who is light years beyond average or Olympic levels of power, specifically godlike entities. Another point worth noting is Bats track record against foes smarter and more skilled then him. He has been beaten many times by Slade Wilson a.k.a. Deathstroke, Lady Shiva, and a few others throughout his career which he has never outsmarted or beaten in a fight. As he stands, Batman is a symbol, he embodies many of the good qualities as well as physical and even mental abilities we can all strive to achieve in reality, but with good ... The Problems Of Deutsche Bank The Problems Deutsche Bank is facing: Global capital markets are being pressured by the travails of Deutsche Bank, one of Europe s largest investment banks, and there is yet no clarity on when the coast will clear. The bank s stock has plunged to all time lows as concerns about liquidity arose for a firm considered systemically important. The fear is that the German bank could fail and spark a domino effect that would harm the global banking system. This worry is heightened as German Chancellor Angela Merkel s administration has rejected any bail out plan. Problems which have been facing by the bank as follows: Huge fine of $14 billion faced by the Bank, prompting fear of a new financial crisis by US regulatory body: Deutsche Bank, Germany s largest bank, is facing its biggest crisis since the global financial meltdown in 2008. US regulators were seeking to fine the company $14 billion not just a large sum of money but actually enough to fundamentally threaten the viability of the bank. And that was only the latest in a series of setbacks that have cost the company s stock more than half its value over the past year. A year ago, the company announced plans to lay off 35,000 people shortly after announcing a $7 billion quarterly loss. In November, the bank agreed to pay a $258 million fine for violating US sanctions laws. In June it failed a US regulatory stress test designed to predict whether it would survive a major economic downturn. And now Deutsche Bank

  • 45. The Battle Of War And War There are many different components to war, far beyond the soldiers and battlefields. Soldiers at war may make the ultimate sacrifice in the sequence of battle, but societies at war deal with the compromise. War requires more non renewable resources than any other industry in the world, the most abundant of those resources being humans. Since July 4, 1776 the US has been in some sort of conflict for 222 of the 239 years since that day. Humans require more basic necessities than any other living organism on the planet. The resources necessary to support a war are endless and can have massive affects on industry, geopolitical structure, populations, educational institutions, and much, much more. With The US having actively participated in war almost the entirety of its existence, war has been impacting everyone and everything in existence be it living or not. Humans alone, without the resources necessary to participate in war, require at least sustenance and shelter just to sustain life. Beyond that there are human needs such as clothing and skills to sustain life within a society. For each of these individuals it is mandatory to obtain one outfit of clothing, one meal a day that is sufficient enough to avoid poor nutrition, one place to sleep. For the women and women of our armed forces these needs are met and merely more. At three meals a day, a place to sleep usually four or more to one room, and three daily outfits including footwear, we can see the military is rather ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Leap Of The Brethren Pantry Summary Least of the Brethren is a local food pantry in Pinkneyville, it is where I am choosing to plunge for my assignment. I am choosing this culture because of the high number of low socioeconomic students that attend school in our area. I feel it is important to understand the needs in our area in order to connect with future students and their families. To be very honest, I know there is a great need for support in our area. However, I assume the families that need this support also receive government assistance through programs such as WIC and Link. Plunging into this culture I hope to gain a better understanding of why pantries are still needed and how I can become more active in addressing the need locally. With the knowledge I hope to gain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During the break the volunteers asked us several questions. From what I gathered all of the volunteers also need the assistance of the pantry. Many asked us how they could help us, assuming we had fallen on hard times. I assured them they we were just there to help them and donate our time. Volunteers receive each goods in their boxes in return for their help. Application of Plunge Experience Prior to taking the plunge I was not aware that even with government programs there is still a need for pantries in our local area. This brings a very large challenge to my educational environment. I will need to find out which students will require this need to be addressed. As a classroom teacher, I will need to bring awareness to the students that do not have this need that a part of their role in our community is to help those in need. This can be done through volunteering and donations. The challenge that individuals from the group will bring to the education environment is one that directly impact their learning. It is well understood that children cannot learn until their most basic needs are met. These disorders are more common than we know and the way they are treated will determine the individual s psychological outcome. • 48. Bill Russell And The Civil Rights Movement Essay On May 6, 1999, Bill Russell, the man who redefineed the center by his unique shot blocking, man to man defense and rebounding ability, and contributed to his team Celtics by his outstanding performance and remarkable leadership, finally attended his own retirement ceremony after 27 years of retirement. This great man in the history of American basketball refused to have a ceremony in 1972 in Boston, the city he perceived as the racist city , because of his concern of discrimination. On February 15th, 2011, Bill Russell received the Medal of Freedom from President Obama for his contribution to civil rights movement. Obama described him as the man who stand up for the dignity of all men . From being insulted, being refused in restaurants during tournaments, intimidating the world with his long arms and strong opinions, to challenging the politics of sports and fighting against racism, it has been a long way for Bill Russell, for American basketball, and for American society. Basketball, one of the major sports in America, presents the civil rights breakthrough both in professional games and in colleges. Analysis Of Uncle Tom s Cabin By Harriet Beecher Stowe Harriet Beecher Stowe was an author during the 1800s and wrote Uncle Tom s Cabin which was far ahead of its time and depicted the evils of slavery. Harriet Beecher Stowe was born on June 14th, 1811 in Litchfield, Connecticut as the seventh child of Lyman and Roxana Beecher. Being that she was born in the North to extremely religious parents, she too of course was quite religious as well as an abolitionist. Unlike most women of her time period, Harriet Beecher Stowe was educated at a school for girls in all of the classic subjects(language, math, etc.). Later in her life, Stowe moved to Cincinnati, Ohio where Irish riots against black people contributed to her ideas of slavery and her abolitionist novels. One day, while in a literary club, Stowe ... This line is referring to the life of the main character, Okonkwo, who struggles with an internal fear throughout the book. This line from the story, in my opinion, for shadows a lot of themes and motives that take place through out the story. Most specifically I think this line can be applied to the theme of gender that is pushed during the entirety of the book. Gender plays a big role within the tribes and within Okonkwo s life, I say this because most things that Okonkwo does or events that take place in the tribe have some aspect of a gender role applied to them. This idea of gender roles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With all of this being said about gender roles I believe that the line his whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and of weakness points to the idea that Okonkwo saw it as a failure and a weakness to show emotion and to show a feminine side. Okonkwo wants to project this hyper masculine self and reject anything feminine leaving him with imbalances. When I say imbalances I mean things like that fact that he beats his wife and alienates his sons. I believe that the overall fear of being feminine stems from the fear of being like his father, who was considered a weak man. Continuing with the line his whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and of weakness , Okonkwo is overcome with the fear of becoming his father, who is considered a weak and lazy man. Okonkwo lets this fear overcome him and causes him to project the hyper masculine tendencies that he displays. The fear of being weak and lazy pushed him to the point that he takes part in the murder of his adopted son, Ikemefuna. Okonkwo s inability to let go of this fear ultimately leads him to his own ...
