Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

1. 5. What have you learnt
about technologies from the
process of constructing this
product?
2. During my coursework I have used various different platforms to research and create my
magazine. I used Microsoft Word and PowerPoint which I have used many
times before, these were for my research. To organise and make sure my work was easy to
understand.
I also used Photoshop and InDesign for the first time to create my front cover, contents
page and double page spread.
Another tool I used was Survey Monkey for my survey to be able to find out my target
audience.
3. I had already used Microsoft Word and
PowerPoint many times in the past,
meanwhile Photoshop and InDesign were
completely new to me but by the end of
my coursework I had learned many
different things about both programmes such
as in Photoshop how to operate the tool bar
and how to create different layers to make it
easier to edit the document, I used rulers to
position the images or elements precisely. I
also learnt how to edit the images using
adjustments to get the best out the image as
possible.
I also used Photoshop as well as
InDesign when making my double page
spread, I used an area of the background
of the image I was going to use and pasted
to the other side of the page and blurred them
together to make the both pages have similar
coloured background.
4. In InDesign I learnt various things such as
how to operate the tool bar ( type tool,
shape tool, etc), columns and column
guides.
I used column guides to ensure my text
was placed neatly on the page.
In the process of making the double page
spread there was extra space left between
the text and images. So I decided to
enlarge the images and include a pull out
quote.
5. SurveyMonkey was a website I had never
used before. Once I had made an account
everything was quite simple from there. I used
it for my audience research as it was a quick
and easy way to get lots of responses once I
had shared it on Facebook. I asked questions
on basic information about themselves
and their opinion on music magazines.
I had also never used SlideShare before doing
my coursework. But it was very easy once I
learned how to use it, I used it various
times on my blog by copying the embedded
link and pasting onto my blog.
6. I also learned how to use Sound cloud
and how to upload videos to
YouTube to be able to insert my music
interviews onto my blog. On Sound
cloud once I created an account I
uploaded the audio then copied and
pasted the embedded link onto my blog.
I used the same process when
uploading my video onto YouTube
except I already had an account.
Another thing I learned how to use was
DaFont and how to download different
fonts using Run.
