FILTRATION
Definition
• The process in which solid particles in a
liquid or gaseous fluid are removed by the
use of a filter medium that permits the fluid
to pass through but retains the solid
particles.
• After filtration the solid particles referred as Filter cake
• The clear liquid was referred as Filtrate
FILTRATION
TYPES OF FILTRATION
2. SURFACE FILTRATION
Surface filtration is concerned with retention of particles mostly on the surface itself. The
particles retained forms a layer of material, commonly called “cake layer”, which helps
increasing the efficiency of filtration furthermore.
DEPTH
SURFACE
• Membrane technology covers all engineering approaches for the
transport of substances between two fractions with the help of
permeable membranes. In general, mechanical separation
processes for separating gaseous or liquid streams use membrane
technology.
• It is used to filter the micro-organisms, for example bacteria
SEITZ FILTER

The SEITZ FILTER consist of compressed asbestos fiber and it is
used in the microbiology laboratory
It is used for serum and bacterial filtration but it is doesn’t block
the entry of viruse into the Filtrate
It is in different size and shape, either has small disk or square
