This document discusses short answer questions as an assessment type. It defines short answer questions as those that can be answered briefly, through listing, defining, drawing or simple arithmetic. The criteria for developing short answer questions are similar to those for essays, including setting questions at students' ability levels, using clear wording, and accounting for limited (10-15 minute) response times. Short answer questions primarily assess recall and understanding, while essays can assess higher-order thinking as well. Advantages are ease of construction and evaluation, while limitations include some subjectivity and inability to fully assess abilities like analysis through automated scoring. Examples are provided of remember- and understand-level questions in Bloom's taxonomy.
