We are proud to have three noted speakers and authors share their methods and teaching ideas with us so that we can grow as educators. Junko Machida (ESTEEM) will demonstrate the use of global issues in the classroom to help with elementary school English lessons. Rumiko Kido (MPI) will explain the benefits of using phonics to help students acquire English language in an enjoyable way. Aleda Krause (JALT TCSIG) will explain and demonstrate five steps to assist children to go from listening to speaking.

In fact, audiovisual technologies could be incorporated in the classroom for second language acquisition. In line with that view, this article highlights the effectiveness of exposure to films on improving the speaking skills of non-native English language learners. The article implied that audiovisual technologies, such as films, generally are a great source for teaching spoken English and must be used more in non-native English language learning contexts.

The main objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using English songs to improve vocabulary knowledge among 30 form three students of a government secondary school in Semenyih, Selangor. A vocabulary test (pre-test), an oral survey on attitudes towards learning vocabulary and observation were conducted before the intervention. the intervention – “Let’s learn new words” was carried out with English songs for three times over a three-week course. After the intervention, a post-test, an oral survey on attitudes towards learning vocabulary and observation were conducted. Results at the end of the study revealed that the experimental group experienced an increase in the vocabulary knowledge. Meanwhile, the qualitative results revealed that most of the students have positive attitude towards learning vocabulary after the intervention. All in all, the findings showed that song-based activities are useful tools to reinforce learning of vocabulary by providing an enjoyable classroom atmosphere. Hence, it is highly recommended that English Language teachers use English songs to teach vocabulary in schools.

In the different research concerning how a second language can be acquired, it has been shown that many factors affect acquisition process of the language. This piece of work covers the influence of learning strategies by English language learners, and how the use of these can improve their level of proficiency or their understanding of the target language.
We are third year students of the English teaching major that the UCSC offers, and we are currently in our “Teaching Experience I”. For the purpose of effectiveness of our future lessons, we decided to carry out this research interviewing a second year student of a secondary school located in Concepción.
This student had an interview with us, and on the basis on that, we spot the possible linguistic problems that she had. In this piece of work, we are going to analyze the difficulties she had in order to make proposals, and plan a lesson so that this student can overcome those problems.

This study sought to investigate students’ attitudes towards listening and speaking in the English classroom at Al Istiqlal University. The researchers noticed that freshmen students at Al Istiqlal University were de-motivated and reluctant to get involved in listening and speaking activities in the English classroom. One root cause may be students’ prior experience of learning English in Palestinian state schools where Arabic is the dominant language (Hamdallah, 1999) and where there may be little provision of speaking and listening to English. The researchers sought to experiment with innovative teaching methods to address these problems. These included using group work, giving students clearly defined roles, using technological applications and drawing on students’ personal lives as strategies to motivate students and change their attitudes towards listening and speaking activities. A stratified–purposeful sample consisting of 18 freshman students was selected. The researchers used a quantitative approach to measure changes. The researchers also used qualitative instrument for the purpose of the study. A questionnaire was administered at the beginning and end of the study to determine changes in students’ attitudes. Also, interviews were organized to decide and get comments on the influence of the strategies which were used. Results indicated that there was a significant difference in students’ attitudes towards listening and speaking activities in English class. When the researchers used different strategies such as: role plays cards, group activities, technology and different assessment forms, students expressed positive feelings, enjoyment and fun. The researchers recommend that teachers in similar university-level context should implement different strategies such as: group wok, role plays, cards, videos and some applications i.e. Padlet to motivate students bridge the gap between school life and university life.
