Cost Benefit Analysis
Explain the principles behind cost benefit analysis. Is the use of cost benefit analysis essential in the
appraisal of public spending? Discuss this in the light of a transport capital expenditure project with
which you are familiar.
Cost benefit analysis is often used by governments to evaluate the desirability of a given intervention.
It is an analysis of the cost effectiveness of different alternatives in order to see whether the benefits
outweigh the costs. The aim is to gauge the efficiency of the intervention relative to the present
circumstances. The costs and benefits of the impacts of an intervention are evaluated in terms of the
public s willingness to pay for them (benefits) or willingness to pay to avoid them (costs). Inputs ...

* Distributional consequences: Costs and benefits mean different things to different income groups
benefits to the poor are usually worth more (or are they?). Those receiving benefits and those
burdened with the costs of a project may not be the same. Are the losers to be compensated? To many
economists, the equity issue is as important as the efficiency argument. * Social welfare is not the
same as individual welfare What we want individually may not be what we want collectively. Do we
attach a different value to those who feel passionately about something (for example the building of
new housing on Greenfield sites) contrasted with those who are more ambivalent? * Valuing the
environment: How are we to place a value on public goods such as the environment where there is no
market established for the valuation of property rights over environmental resources? How does one
value nuisance and aesthetic values ? * Valuing human life: Some measurements of benefits require
the valuation of human life many people are intrinsically opposed to any attempt to do this. This
objection can be partly overcome if we focus instead on the probability of a project reducing the risk
of death and there are insurance markets in existence which tell us something about how much people
value their health and life when they take out insurance policies. * Attitudes to risk e.g. a cost benefit

Cinematic Forms In The Truman Show By Peter Weir
Peter Weirs The Truman Show presents a retrospective on the challenge of new experiences. With the
uses of cinematic forms such as camera angles like high and medium shots which enhance characters
discussions and music that emphasises the emotions of the characters such as Truman who is
encountering and facing a new experiences, Weir is able to visually represent the challenge of new
experiences in The Truman Show through the use of cinematic forms.
In The Truman Show, Weir expresses the challenges of new experiences with the uses of cinematic
forms, Truman the main character gets a lot of these as the show revolves around him experiencing
challenges in his daily life. Weir uses the cinematic form of Music to capture the mood and
atmosphere of the scene, he has selected music that would fit the scene and complement the
challenges of a new experience. An example of this is when Truman reunites with his father, the music
that was playing was happy and it captured the mood and the atmosphere of the scene as the audience
of the show felt joyous for Truman as well as the audience of the movie. Weir is able to give a visual
representation of the challenge of new experiences through the use of cinematic forms. When Truman
felt scared of traveling ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Essay about The Inadequacy of Paley s Argument from Design
The Inadequacy of the Argument from Design
William Paley s teleological argument (also known as the argument from design) is an attempt to
prove the existence of god. This argument succeeds in proving that while existence was created by an
aggregation of forces, to define these forces, as a conscious, rational, and ultimately godlike is
dubious. Although the conclusions are valid, the argument makes several logical errors. The
teleological argument relies on inductive reasoning, rendering the argument itself valid, but unsound.
The argument fails to apply its own line of reasoning to itself, resulting in infinite regression. Beyond
the scope of its logical flaws, the arguments content lacks accurate comparisons. The argument hinges
on a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although this type of argument is practical at predicting patterns of re occurring events, they are never
legitimately sound. Consider the sunrise. It has risen every day for thousands of years on end.
Therefore, it will rise tomorrow. Despite the odds of this happening being very high, there is not a one
hundred percent chance that it will. Furthermore, consider the existence of the universe itself.
Although the odds of life being created by a random amalgamation of forces are very low, the correct
combination for life to exist only has to occur once. From that point forward, evolution and a reaction
to external stimuli allows life to change naturally.
The argument also indulges in an infinite regression. It assumes that a transcendent god created the
entire universe. However, it fails to account for what created the god. As stated in the lecture slides, a
committee of lesser beings may have created the god, but that begs the question about who created the
committee. One could object to this idea and believe that god has always existed, transcending time
and reality itself. Once again, however, this logic is just as applicable to the universe. The universe is
as capable of existing forever as a god is.
William Paley further begs the question in stating that because of perceived complexities in an entity,
it must have been designed. This perceived relation between complexity and design is an inherently

The Navajo Long Walk And The Navajo Nation
What molds a nation or group of people? As a member of the Navajo Nation, I ve wondered how our
history has impacted our nation. This research paper is a reflection of my curiosity. Throughout this
paper I will explain how The Navajo Long Walk and The 1868 Treaty of Bosque Redondo contributed
in shaping what the Navajo Nation today. During the mid 19th century tensions with the Navajo, U.S.
government, and white settlers were tense. The third wave of the Navajo Wars would ultimately lead
to the U.S. government s decision to create a campaign against the Navajo and thus impose the Navajo
Long Walk (Brooks 95). General Carleton, a U.S. Army General, had Kit Carson, the well known
Indian fighter, deliver his demands to the Navajo, he said, Say to them: Go to Bosque Redondo or we
will pursue and destroy you. We will not make peace with you on any terms. You have deceived us too
often and robbed and murdered our people too long to trust you at large in your own country. (Acrey
39). Thus, in 1864, Navajo people were forcibly removed by the U.S. federal government from their
traditional homelands to eastern New Mexico. U.S. Army records indicate that at least 11,468 Navajos
were forced to walk three hundred to five hundred miles to the internment camp called Bosque
Redondo (Spanish translation is Round Forest) or Fort Sumner (Cheek 18). For four years, Navajo
people were forced to stay in Bosque Redondo where starvation, disease, and restriction of their
culture was prevalent.

The Fight For Preserve Animal Independence
The Fight to Preserve Animal Independence Kindness and compassion towards all living things is a
mark of a civilized society. Conversely, cruelty, whether it is directed against human beings or against
animals, is not the exclusive province of any one culture or community of people (César Chávez).
Over the years, scientists have struggled to establish a technological way to ensure that their
experiments are both safe and accurate. However, economic and political afflictions occurred during
the twentieth century that restrained researchers from finding alternatives to test their new drugs. The
inflation of disease, the need for cosmetics, and the essence of science urged scientists to conduct their
experiments on animals since it was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Scientists inhumanely sabotage animal lives and coerce them to live in unbearable conditions in order
to conduct accurate results that can be used on people. Additionally, corporations are becoming
corrupt because they fear that they will lose money once consumers learn about the pernicious
procedures that go behind making their products. Despite the necessity for treatments and products,
animal rights activists have fought continuously to preserve animal independence by exposing
research facilities and advocating protests that have urged many corporations to consider producing
animal cruelty free products. It is important that individuals acknowledge that scientists and
researchers are harming and endangering animal species by conducting unjust and inhumane
experiments on these innocent creatures. Therefore, limiting the ways scientists test on animals will
not only protect animal rights, but it will enhance human companionship. Ending animal abuse in
research will create an effective social, political, economic, and cultural advancement that will
improve moral significance among humans.
The entity of human decency declares that all individuals are entitled to equality upon respecting and
preserving the environment around them. However, the conundrum comes when people begin to lose
their integrity towards nature and take advantage of it. They become so

Higher Taxa Report
Written largely for the graduate student of paleontology, The Origin of Higher Taxa by Tom Kemp
(emeritus university lecturer in palaeontology at the University of Oxford, and specialist on therapsids
[also known as mammal like reptiles] and mammal origins), explores the problem of higher taxa, and
the mechanism, his theory of correlated progression, by which they evolve. The book consists of nine
chapters, roughly broken up into: introduction to the subject and the nature of higher taxa and
organisms, the paleontological (evolutionary change) and developmental evidence, and the fossil
record and synthesis.
The introductory chapters proceed rather quickly, discussing the philosophical nature of Darwinian
natural selection, microevolution versus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Kemp uses this model to highlight features as the Cambrian explosion, and the origin of tetrapods,
mammals, turtles, birds, and whales from the vertebrate fossil record. While going through these case
studies Kemp references the usual classic paleontological works, but the text is also wonderfully up to
date, citing the most recent relevant research in the respective fields. This is also true of the early
chapters of the fields of developmental and ecological perspectives and of the regulatory gene
networks where classic studies draw attention to early theories while the newer works and reports
incorporate the latest ideas. The current literature in just one of these fields is vast so Kemp has done a
reasonable task of summarizing the more salient points. In his efforts, Kemp emphasizes that I have
tried to show that of the cases of the origin of taxa that we know something about, especially from the
fossil record all are compatible with and can be explained by these processes, (p. 178). While that may
be true, some scientists may argue that one model may not fit all scenarios. However, this will be the
case with any model. Science needs new ideas and new models in order to progress and remain

Farming Is The Nation s Most Important And Noblest...
When you think about farming what comes to mind? Do you think about older gentlemen on tractors,
or young boys helping there father feed the family herd. Maybe you even think about thousands of
acres of corn land in Iowa. Whatever it is I can assure you farming is the nation s most important and
noblest profession. Today farming is seen as a dangerous profession, that s not necessarily the case, it
is true that many people are injured and even killed on farms each year. In 2012 alone three hundred
and seventy four farmers and farm workers lost there lives due to work related injuries, and every day
a staggering one hundred and sixty seven agriculture workers suffer a work related injury (CDC
2012). But why so many? The simple answer is that when it comes to farm safety many people are
ignorant. I myself am guilty of not using the proper safety equipment or even removing a safety shield
to make things run more efficient. I think we have it hardwired in our brains that bad things only
happen to other people, and nothing bad could happen to ourselves, that s not the case. I think that if
farmers will take the time to slow down and be more careful and think things through we will cut
down drastically on injuries. If you think about it many farmers are constantly stressed, they simply
don t have enough hours in the day to accomplish all the tasks at hand so they begin to rush which
causes shortcuts to be made which can potentially lead to injury or death.
Like I mentioned

The American Family Should Be Like The Cosby Show, A...
There are several shows that portray both social and political messages. While answering this
question, I can t help but focus on shows that have exhibited what the American family should be like.
The Cosby Show, a social message, is an American sitcom the show focuses on the Huxtable s, an
upper middle class African American family living in Brooklyn, NY. I think the show set the standards
for how African American families should live, although many of us don t live that way. 4. Kendrick
Lamar is a hip hop recording artist, and for the African American community he has been a huge
social movement. I realized this during a pop culture class I took this semester. His new album, To
Pimp A Butterfly specifically, shows his dedication to trying to bring positivity to his listeners. He
recognizes that hip hop has some responsibility for the systematic problems that the black community
has faced. And according to, Music.Mic, Hip hop could have played a huge role in the death of
Michael Brown, with a New York Times obituary implying that Brown s hip hop aspirations somehow
factored into Brown s death. 5. In simple terms, a public relations nightmare is when someone s ( a
company as a whole or an individual s) reputation is damaged which in essence is a nightmare and
there s the responsibility of restoring the image to the public, which typically consists of supporters
and investors of the company and/or individual. An example would be the Volkswagen case.

The Satyricon Compare And Contrast
Both the writing and movie of The Satyricon shocked viewers and still do, however there are several
occurrences in both that are not seen in the other. To start, both the reading and the video start
similarly, but the video version adds more to the story. The movie adds to the plot by having Asciltos
sell Giton to an actor named Vernacchio. In the writing Encolpius simply finds Asciltos and Giton.
The reasoning for this addition is unknown, but when making a movie the director needs to keep
viewers interested. By adding a twist to the plot the viewer gets a similar but different story. Another
addition to the plot, seen in the movie, is the fight between Fortunata and her husband. He attacks her

Essay Theodore Roosevelt and a Strengthened Presidency
Theodore Roosevelt and a Strengthened Presidency Theodore Roosevelt has been recalled as one of
our most forceful Presidents. The reason for his reputation of strength rested on his ability to get
things done, both domestically and abroad. His policies resulted in a strengthened executive branch.
Roosevelt inherited the Presidency after the unfortunate death of President McKinley in 1901. One of
his earliest displays of Federal power came in 1902 with the Pennsylvania coal strike. His efforts at
negotiation marked the first time that the Federal government stepped in to resolve a labor dispute
with the intention to protect all concerned, as opposed to favoring industry over workers and the
public good. Although the coal miners ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Towards this end, he passed the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act in 1906. Both of
these measures marked the beginnings of reform in consumer rights, which before Roosevelt, had
been virtually ignored. Part of his policy of protecting the public welfare included conservation, an
idea that was previously not given much attention. Americans had always used their natural resources
without regard for the future, yet President Roosevelt managed to awaken public interest in
conservation, spur Congress to action and convince Federal and state governments to adopt new
policies. He withdrew from public sale 150 acres of forest lands, coal and phosphate lands, and
potential water power sites. At his urging, Congress created wildlife sanctuaries and national parks.
The Newlands Reclamation Act provided money from the sale of public lands in 16 Western states and
territories to build irrigation projects to make wastelands suitable for farming. Two of these are the
Shoshone Dam in Wyoming and Arizona s Roosevelt Dam. Additionally, he created the Inland
Waterways Commission, and held the White House Conference of 1908, which succeeded in
establishing state conservation agencies in 41 states and established the National Conservation
Commission to study the nation s mineral, water, forest and soil resources. Roosevelt s conservation
policy established a strong foundation for a solid conservation program for the future. Roosevelt

Ebola Culture
Hi Dr. Dispiritu, Thank you for asking an interesting question regarding the cultural tradition of the
other countries, which causing the spread of Ebola virus through unsafe burial culture before burying
the body of their loved ones. Educating the public, relating to the transmission of Ebola virus, is
essential to prevent the spread of the disease, especially to people with traditional and culturally

In my opinion, to be able to practice a security measure of burial tradition, and better perception of the
community regarding the nature of the spread of Ebola virus (through close contact of an affected
individual who is living as well as dead body) is by educating the traditional or religious leaders.
Traditional/ Religious leaders are well respected by their community, and they have a significant
influence of communicating to the public about Ebola virus as well as in preventing the spread of the
disease. Based on Manguvo and Mafuvadze (2015), there is evidence in an affected community that
inaccurate information provided to traditional /religious authorities can hamper preemptive measures
of contracting Ebola virus as compared to well informed leaders. Moreover, effective and well
educated leaders able to recognize qualified individuals in their neighborhood that can be instructed,

Culture differs from one location to another because of the different population in those areas. A
population is an entire group of individual persons, objects, or items from which the sample are being

brings about changes in the population. A method called participant observation can answer questions
about the culture of the population being observed. Participant observation is a qualitative research
method that aims to uncover the meanings people give to their own social actions by observing their
behavior in practice. By hanging out in a community observing the population over a long period of
time, participant observers are able to capture

Roethke was a great poet, the successor to Frost and Stevens in modern American poetry, and it is the

a romantic who wrote in a variety of styles throughout his long successful career. However, it was not
the form of his verse that was important, but the message being delivered and the overall theme of the
work. Roethke was a deep thinker and often pondered about and reflected on his life. This

Roethke married Beatrice O Connell, a former student at Bennington College, in 1953. Roethke

According to Allan Seager, most of the reviews were good and those that contained adverse criticisms
tacitly acknowledged that it was the work of a genuine poet and not a beginner (Contemporary
Authors 476). His next two volumes, The Lost Son and Other Poems (1948) and Praise to the End!
(1951) were expressions of his explorations of his interior self. After reading The Lost Son and Other

The Model Of The American Family
For as long as I can remember, the ideal family household consisted of the male/father as the bread
winner, provider, and head of the household, and female/mother, and children as members of this
family. This image was embedded in us through our social class, our parents, our community, and the
social media. The families of today have drastically changed, and are more complex in the family role.
As time progresses, divorce rates are at an all time high, and single parent homes are even higher. To
top it off we can t turn on the TV or computer without seeing or hearing about gay/lesbian marriage or
states legalizing same sex marriage. Over time the idea of what the model family was viewed as and
the reality of what a model class consist of now began to clash. American families are becoming numb
or more excepting of the detrimental changes that I have listed above, of the model African American
family. Finances and infidelity are at the top of the list of reasons why the African American family is
becoming non existent.
The idea that the 1950s were the best time to raise children was based on the finances of the middle
class, but the women back then were not respected as an equal to their husband as they are more so
today.
The African American male traditionally had the patriarchy role. He was the provider, and head of the
household. That role is still ideal today, but not always possible. Due to high divorce rates, that role

Point Nemo Research Paper
So... uh... this is my first post. Please tolerate any amateurism that occurs here.
We ll begin with the farthest point from land (uncovered by water, as the crust is only 4 miles away)
Point Nemo (means no one in Latin, quite suitable, isn t it?) (Coordinates: 48.875485556,

This map always makes me overlook the fact that the Pacific Ocean is vast...
Named after the eponymous captain (he s an Indian prince by the way) from Jules Verne s Twenty
Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Point Nemo is about 2,688.22058 km (1,670.38289 miles) from any

Paul Murrell of the University of Auckland revealed that the surface temperature of Point Nemo is
around 5.8 °C (42 °F), which disproves Volvo s point. (Well Volvo isn t much of a reliable source in

Fun fact: The word Nemo is carved (well it s clearly photoshopped, but that choice of word isn t really

Good Earth Greed Quotes
Greed was a common characteristic in The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck. The characteristic drew
people to do selfish things like join a band of robbers or continuously ask for money, but don t we
have greed in our society today? The Good Earth was set around 1930, or earlier, and Wang Lung, the
main character, lives for about 70 years. Wang Lung is followed through his life in The Good Earth.
What does greed in 1930 s China have in common with greed in today s 2018 society, and what is
different?
The characteristic greed in The Good Earth plays a big role in Wang Lung s life. Wang Lung s uncle is
the perfect example of greed because he is always asking for more. He goes as far as to join The Red
Beards, a well known band of robbers, to gain wealth. Another person with a lot of greed in The Good
Earth is Lotus. Lotus is very greedy because she is always asking for money to spend on luxuries.
Another example is Wang Lung himself. Wang Lung never fully acknowledges the fact that Olan is
primarily responsible for his wealth because she stole the jewels from the rich people in the south.
One final example is the gateman at the House of Hwang in the beginning of the book. He takes
advantage of Wang Lung and takes money from him for an entrance fee that didn t exist. Also, the
gateman joined the Red Beards when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Importance Of Sin In The Crucible
Puritans want to purify the world and destroy sin that goes around in it. They broke off from the
Roman Catholic Church, for they had separate beliefs and felt mistreated. Their beliefs included many
of the same ideals of a catholic, but they took those ideals to an extreme. They believed that sinning
had something to do with the devil controlling the human body. The Puritans strongly believed that
lying to others was an ultimate sin, and they were to only tell the truth. Moreover, God didn t
appreciate his followers to lie. In the Crucible, Elizabeth was in the wrong for lying about his lechery,
because lying is against her religion, and once John confessed, there wasn t much Elizabeth could ve
done for John except tell the truth. She was also known to be a truthful person, so she shouldn t have
lied and sticked with what she knew, consciously, was right.
Again, lying to the court about lechery was the wrong decision; furthermore, Elizabeth went against
her religion, and made John seem like a liar. Due to John accusing Abigail of lying, once Elizabeth
lied about the lechery, it made his accusation sound like a lie. Danforth explains to Abigail, But
likewise, children, the law and bible damn all bearers of false witness (Crucible. 3. 614 616). Danforth
explains in court that lying is not called for, nor is it welcomed in court and religion. Danforth says
this because he can then connect law to religion as a church and state collaboration. Danforth tries to

Family Secrets And Mystery In The Story Of Oedipus
The story of Oedipus is a perfect example of family secrets and mysteries that lie within a society. No
matter which era or generation, there will always be similar stories and events like Oedipus. Mankind
is fascinated by mystery, and when is specific to their families, the urge and curiosity to get to the
bottom of things will always be present. The basic questions of who am I? And where did I come
from? Will always be the driving force behind any individual in the search for the truth. The story of
Oedipus can be seen both as tragic as well as heroic in some of his actions, ignorance cannot be used
to excuse a crime but it can make it unintentional.
Oedipus was cursed, indirectly, due to the sins of his father Laius after a crime he committed; the
cursed stated that his unborn son would kill him. Laius was blinded and possessed by the curse since
he immediately demonstrated selfishness, as well as a lack of affection and love for his newborn son.
This is because he commanded that the child be killed. He pierced the three day old infant s ankles
and gave him to a shepherd, with orders to expose him on Mount Cithaeron, outside Thebes
(Sophocles 28). Even before Oedipus was born, his fate will be filled sealed with tragedy; it was
indeed inevitable to prevent.
It was significant to point out how fate took away Oedipus s free will, which started when a drunken
guest at a banquet questioned his paternity (Sophocles 28), while leaving out important details that

The Kingdom Of Matthias By Paul E. Johnson And Sean...
Sojourner Truth is remembered as an ex slave who changed her name from Isabella and gave her
famous Ain t I a Woman speech regarding abolition and women s rights. But before her speech, Truth
actively participated in a religious cult and faced a murder charge. Authors Paul E. Johnson and Sean
Wilentz provide a descriptive account of the religious cult in their book The Kingdom of Matthias: A
Story of Sex and Salvation in 19th century America. Their book follows the life of Robert Matthews
and the events of his life leading up to the creation of his new religion in New York in the 1830s.
Robert Matthews started to refer to himself as the prophet Matthias and recruited wealthy families to
join his religion where they lived in isolation. American society in the 1830s encountered rapid change
with the emergence of the market revolution and the Second Great Awakening. Impacts from the
market revolution, the second great awakening, and personal factors led Matthias to create and
influenced his own religion which other Americans eventually denounced.
Robert Matthews grew up in New York to Scotland immigrants and attended the Anti Burgher
Secession Church a sect of the Scots Presbyterian Church. The church practiced strict adherence to
Calvinist orthodoxy by living and dressing plainly and following a patriarchal model. Orphaned as a
child, Matthews resided with a church elder, John Maxwell. After his stay with Maxwell, he moved
with Edward Cook who taught him carpentry. A year or

The Early Modern Atlantic Economy Edited by J. McCusker...
On one hand a group of historian argues the notion that Brazil and the Caribbean experienced a sugar
revolution while on the other hand another group argues that there was no such thing as a sugar
revolution, what Brazil and Caribbean experienced was simply a sugar boom. In order to assess which
group of historians is more accurate, one must first understand the concept of a sugar revolution and
what factors must be present in order for a sugar revolution to occur. The concept of a sugar revolution
is one that states there was a drastic change from the cultivation of tobacco to the cultivating of sugar
cane, changing the country`s economy, politics and social structure within a short period of time.
According to B.W. Higman there are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When sugar cane was introduced those planters who owned small plots of land either had to sell their
land, merge their land with another planter and enter into a partnership or buy more land in order to
grow sugar cane. Sugar cane could only be grown on large plots of land which ranged from 150 acres
to 500 acres in Barbados and in Jamaica 300 acres to 5000 acres. The type of labour also changed
within the Caribbean islands of Barbados, Jamaica, Nevis, Antigua and Montserrat from free labour to
slave labour. Tobacco cultivation required a very small labour force, but with sugar as the new cash
crop a large labour force was needed in which the Dutch provided by bringing African slaves.
Therefore the white populations of these countries declined while the black populations increased due
to the sugar revolution. Even though the governments of these Islands made efforts to keep the black
to white ratio ten to one, according to Greenwood, Robert, Hamber, S, Dyde, Brian the ratio became
extremely difficult to maintain during the years passed .
This population change occurred during the early years of the sugar revolution up to the mid 1700s. In
Barbados there were 18 000 whites and 5 500 blacks in 1645 and by 1660 there were 20 000 whites
and 30 000 blacks while Jamaica had 4 500 whites and 1 500 blacks in 1658 to 8 500 whites to

Historical Information About The Lovely Bones
Historical information about the setting:
The Lovely Bones takes place in a small town near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The plot begins
December 6, 1973 with the rape and murder of Susie Salmon. As Susie herself says, It was still back
when people believed things like that didn t happen. (Sebold 1) During the 1970s most serial killers
and rape were unheard of. The fact that many people weren t aware led to the very criminals living
amongst them. Awareness to these crimes started to rise with the feminist movement and technology.
The inspiration to the setting in this novel also comes from where the Sebold herself grew up. She
grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia and she called it Nowhere, USA. She lived in some look alike
homes when she was an adult and made the same design for the setting in The Lovely Bones.
Biographical information about the author:
Alice Sebold was born on September 6, 1968 in Madison, Wisconsin. She moved and grew up in the
suburbs of Philadelphia. She many times called it Nowhere, USA. She graduated from Great Valley
High School in Malvern, Pennsylvania. She also graduated from Syracuse University in 1984. Alice
was raped when she was freshman in college. She was walking through an off campus park when she
was dragged in to a tunnel. She was severely sodomized, urinated on, and beat. She survived and was
told it was a miracle because many young ladies who dragged into that tunnel never made it out alive.

Essay on Walt Whitman
Walt Whitman
In parting with traditional poetic formalities, Walt Whitman alleviated a burden that impeded his
ability to achieve full poetic expression. To Whitman, the strict boundaries that formal meter,
structure, and rhyme imposed set limits on his stylistic freedom. This is not to say that these limits
prevented Whitman from conveying his themes. Rather, they presented a contradiction to which
Whitman refused to conform. In Whitman s eyes, to meet these formal guidelines one would also have
to sacrifice the ability to express qualities and passion of living men. Thus, Whitman contested
traditional poetic protocol because it added a layer of superficiality that concerned itself with creating
perfect rhythmical, metrical, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This meant that stanzas consisted of a predetermined amount of lines or that the poem had a
predetermined amount of stanzas. Augmenting this formal structure were predetermined rhyme
schemes (such as abab cdcd efef gg in Shakespearean sonnets). Based on the above, we can describe
traditional poetic etiquette as adhering to the suggested formal patterns predetermined by the tradition
of British poetry. Just in reaching the above conclusion, a problem arises that all poets, not just
Whitman, face when trying to conform to this style. This problem is that all of these rules are
cumbersome. It is difficult for a poet to convey the theme of a poem when he or she is concerned with
whether or not each word fits into a designated formal pattern. Yet, some would argue that this is what
makes poetry such an elegant art form. Surely, Whitman recognized the genius found in Shakespeare s
sonnets and other constitutive examples of traditional British poetry. However, whether or not
Whitman recognized the genius of great traditional British poets, is inconsequential. What did matter
was whether or not Whitman felt that this style was appropriate for him. The answer is no. Whitman
found problems not simply with the fact that clinging to the traditional style might be burdensome
(surely this would not have been an insurmountable task for Whitman), but his main issue with
traditional style concerned the ornamental effect of formal regularity:

Marjane Satrapi s The Complete Persepolis
Upon completing the first part of The Complete Persepolis, I have found myself to be enlightened to

engrossing storyline and modern graphic illustrations of Marjane Satrapi s childhood, introduced me
to many diverse aspects of Iranian lifestyle that wouldn t have been depicted through biographies or

Richard II was a play that was written by William Shakespeare in his earlier days (1398). This
particular play is considered to be his 1st in his history of the tetralogy, which is a series of four

most relevant factors are in regards to kingship and the role of authority figures and how these
characters intertwined within our perception of the way we operate as a community or in this case in

Gaunt states, This other Eden, demi paradise (Bevington, 2014 p.341). He is only specifying that
England symbolically is a replica of the Garden of Eden. In his speeches, they are powerful due to his
imagery descriptions and the visuals he leaves his readers with once he has delivered a speech. Also,
within Act 3 scene 4 he mentions the garden again by saying, Thou, old Adam s likeness set to dress
this garden (Bevington, 2014 p.356). All of which correlates back to the biblical era when Adam and
Eve were in the Garden and their desire associated with the landscape of the garden whereas God had
prepared a special place for them to live. Therefore, the imagery perceived from the garden is a
beautiful place because he refers to the location as paradise. Now, as a child, my family lived in
Hawaii, which too was referred to as paradise due to the beautiful landscaping of the body of waters
surrounding the Island, passion fruit, trees, and the vibrant color scheme that was visual to the five

The Religion Of The Hebrew People
If one were to discuss Western civilization in its entirety, it would be difficult not to include Judaism,
the religion of the Hebrew people. The Hebrews, the ancestors of the Jewish people, were a small
generally nomadic group of herders from Mesopotamia that would eventually settle in early Palestine
to birth a religious movement that would ripple through the known world for millennia to come.
Judaism, whose name comes from the ancient southern kingdom of Judah, is one of the world s oldest

and would later become the driving force behind Christianity, the primary religion of the West.

Isaac would eventually have two offspring as well, Esau and Jacob, who according to tradition warred
with each other before birth in Jacob s wife Rebecca s womb. Upon Isaac s old age he prepared to give
a blessing to his son Esau, but was tricked by his wife to give the blessing instead to Jacob, in turn
causing a blood feud between the brothers. Fearing for his life Jacob would flee to live far away with
his uncle. In his absence he would father 12 sons, each of which birthing the 12 tribes of Judah.
Eventually Jacob would return to reconcile with his brother Esau, but not before wrestling with an
angel to receive a blessing from him. Blessing Jacob, the angel gave him a new name, calling him
Israel or he who wrestled with God. The Jewish people would later be referred to as the Children of
Israel signifying descent from Jacob.
Jacobs twelve sons, Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Zebulun, Issachar, Dan, Gad, Asher, Naphtali,
Joseph and Benjamin were the ancestors for the tribes of Israel, and the ones for whom they were
named. Josephs older brothers would grow jealous of him, as he was the favorite of Israel and because
of his gift of visions, and would later be sold into slavery out of jealousy, finding himself as a slave in
Egypt. Eventually, Josephs gift to interpret visions earned him a place in the Pharoah s court, which

This argument succeeds in proving that while existence was created by an aggregation of forces, to define these forces, as a conscious, rational, and ultimately godlike is dubious. Although the conclusions are valid, the argument makes several logical errors. The teleological argument relies on inductive reasoning, rendering the argument itself valid, but unsound. The argument fails to apply its own line of reasoning to itself, resulting in infinite regression. Beyond the scope of its logical flaws, the arguments content lacks accurate comparisons. The argument hinges on a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although this type of argument is practical at predicting patterns of re occurring events, they are never legitimately sound. Consider the sunrise. It has risen every day for thousands of years on end. Therefore, it will rise tomorrow. Despite the odds of this happening being very high, there is not a one hundred percent chance that it will. Furthermore, consider the existence of the universe itself. Although the odds of life being created by a random amalgamation of forces are very low, the correct combination for life to exist only has to occur once. From that point forward, evolution and a reaction to external stimuli allows life to change naturally. The argument also indulges in an infinite regression. It assumes that a transcendent god created the entire universe. However, it fails to account for what created the god. As stated in the lecture slides, a committee of lesser beings may have created the god, but that begs the question about who created the committee. One could object to this idea and believe that god has always existed, transcending time and reality itself. Once again, however, this logic is just as applicable to the universe. The universe is as capable of existing forever as a god is. William Paley further begs the question in stating that because of perceived complexities in an entity, it must have been designed. This perceived relation between complexity and design is an inherently ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Navajo Long Walk And The Navajo Nation What molds a nation or group of people? As a member of the Navajo Nation, I ve wondered how our history has impacted our nation. This research paper is a reflection of my curiosity. Throughout this paper I will explain how The Navajo Long Walk and The 1868 Treaty of Bosque Redondo contributed in shaping what the Navajo Nation today. During the mid 19th century tensions with the Navajo, U.S. government, and white settlers were tense. The third wave of the Navajo Wars would ultimately lead to the U.S. government s decision to create a campaign against the Navajo and thus impose the Navajo Long Walk (Brooks 95). General Carleton, a U.S. Army General, had Kit Carson, the well known Indian fighter, deliver his demands to the Navajo, he said, Say to them: Go to Bosque Redondo or we will pursue and destroy you. We will not make peace with you on any terms. You have deceived us too often and robbed and murdered our people too long to trust you at large in your own country. (Acrey 39). Thus, in 1864, Navajo people were forcibly removed by the U.S. federal government from their traditional homelands to eastern New Mexico. U.S. Army records indicate that at least 11,468 Navajos were forced to walk three hundred to five hundred miles to the internment camp called Bosque Redondo (Spanish translation is Round Forest) or Fort Sumner (Cheek 18). For four years, Navajo people were forced to stay in Bosque Redondo where starvation, disease, and restriction of their culture was prevalent. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Conversely, cruelty, whether it is directed against human beings or against animals, is not the exclusive province of any one culture or community of people (César Chávez). Over the years, scientists have struggled to establish a technological way to ensure that their experiments are both safe and accurate. Scientists inhumanely sabotage animal lives and coerce them to live in unbearable conditions in order to conduct accurate results that can be used on people. Despite the necessity for treatments and products, animal rights activists have fought continuously to preserve animal independence by exposing research facilities and advocating protests that have urged many corporations to consider producing animal cruelty free products. It is important that individuals acknowledge that scientists and researchers are harming and endangering animal species by conducting unjust and inhumane experiments on these innocent creatures. Therefore, limiting the ways scientists test on animals will not only protect animal rights, but it will enhance human companionship. Ending animal abuse in research will create an effective social, political, economic, and cultural advancement that will improve moral significance among humans. Higher Taxa Report Written largely for the graduate student of paleontology, The Origin of Higher Taxa by Tom Kemp (emeritus university lecturer in palaeontology at the University of Oxford, and specialist on therapsids [also known as mammal like reptiles] and mammal origins), explores the problem of higher taxa, and the mechanism, his theory of correlated progression, by which they evolve. The book consists of nine chapters, roughly broken up into: introduction to the subject and the nature of higher taxa and organisms, the paleontological (evolutionary change) and developmental evidence, and the fossil record and synthesis. This is also true of the early chapters of the fields of developmental and ecological perspectives and of the regulatory gene networks where classic studies draw attention to early theories while the newer works and reports incorporate the latest ideas. The current literature in just one of these fields is vast so Kemp has done a reasonable task of summarizing the more salient points. In his efforts, Kemp emphasizes that I have tried to show that of the cases of the origin of taxa that we know something about, especially from the fossil record all are compatible with and can be explained by these processes, (p. 178). Do you think about older gentlemen on tractors, or young boys helping there father feed the family herd. Maybe you even think about thousands of acres of corn land in Iowa. Whatever it is I can assure you farming is the nation s most important and noblest profession. Today farming is seen as a dangerous profession, that s not necessarily the case, it is true that many people are injured and even killed on farms each year. In 2012 alone three hundred and seventy four farmers and farm workers lost there lives due to work related injuries, and every day a staggering one hundred and sixty seven agriculture workers suffer a work related injury (CDC 2012). But why so many? The simple answer is that when it comes to farm safety many people are ignorant. I myself am guilty of not using the proper safety equipment or even removing a safety shield to make things run more efficient. I think we have it hardwired in our brains that bad things only happen to other people, and nothing bad could happen to ourselves, that s not the case. I think that if farmers will take the time to slow down and be more careful and think things through we will cut down drastically on injuries. If you think about it many farmers are constantly stressed, they simply don t have enough hours in the day to accomplish all the tasks at hand so they begin to rush which causes shortcuts to be made which can potentially lead to injury or death. The Cosby Show, a social message, is an American sitcom the show focuses on the Huxtable s, an upper middle class African American family living in Brooklyn, NY. The reason for his reputation of strength rested on his ability to get things done, both domestically and abroad. His policies resulted in a strengthened executive branch. Americans had always used their natural resources without regard for the future, yet President Roosevelt managed to awaken public interest in conservation, spur Congress to action and convince Federal and state governments to adopt new policies. He withdrew from public sale 150 acres of forest lands, coal and phosphate lands, and potential water power sites. At his urging, Congress created wildlife sanctuaries and national parks. The Newlands Reclamation Act provided money from the sale of public lands in 16 Western states and territories to build irrigation projects to make wastelands suitable for farming. Two of these are the Shoshone Dam in Wyoming and Arizona s Roosevelt Dam. Additionally, he created the Inland Waterways Commission, and held the White House Conference of 1908, which succeeded in establishing state conservation agencies in 41 states and established the National Conservation Commission to study the nation s mineral, water, forest and soil resources. They broke off from the Roman Catholic Church, for they had separate beliefs and felt mistreated. Their beliefs included many of the same ideals of a catholic, but they took those ideals to an extreme. They believed that sinning had something to do with the devil controlling the human body. The Puritans strongly believed that lying to others was an ultimate sin, and they were to only tell the truth. Moreover, God didn t appreciate his followers to lie. In the Crucible, Elizabeth was in the wrong for lying about his lechery, because lying is against her religion, and once John confessed, there wasn t much Elizabeth could ve done for John except tell the truth. She was also known to be a truthful person, so she shouldn t have lied and sticked with what she knew, consciously, was right. Again, lying to the court about lechery was the wrong decision; furthermore, Elizabeth went against her religion, and made John seem like a liar. Due to John accusing Abigail of lying, once Elizabeth lied about the lechery, it made his accusation sound like a lie. Danforth explains to Abigail, But likewise, children, the law and bible damn all bearers of false witness (Crucible. 3. 614 616). • 25. Family Secrets And Mystery In The Story Of Oedipus The story of Oedipus is a perfect example of family secrets and mysteries that lie within a society. No matter which era or generation, there will always be similar stories and events like Oedipus. Mankind is fascinated by mystery, and when is specific to their families, the urge and curiosity to get to the bottom of things will always be present. The basic questions of who am I? And where did I come from? Will always be the driving force behind any individual in the search for the truth. The story of Oedipus can be seen both as tragic as well as heroic in some of his actions, ignorance cannot be used to excuse a crime but it can make it unintentional. Oedipus was cursed, indirectly, due to the sins of his father Laius after a crime he committed; the cursed stated that his unborn son would kill him. Laius was blinded and possessed by the curse since he immediately demonstrated selfishness, as well as a lack of affection and love for his newborn son. This is because he commanded that the child be killed. He pierced the three day old infant s ankles and gave him to a shepherd, with orders to expose him on Mount Cithaeron, outside Thebes (Sophocles 28). Even before Oedipus was born, his fate will be filled sealed with tragedy; it was indeed inevitable to prevent. It was significant to point out how fate took away Oedipus s free will, which started when a drunken guest at a banquet questioned his paternity (Sophocles 28), while leaving out important details that could have ... • 26. The Kingdom Of Matthias By Paul E. Johnson And Sean... Sojourner Truth is remembered as an ex slave who changed her name from Isabella and gave her famous Ain t I a Woman speech regarding abolition and women s rights. But before her speech, Truth actively participated in a religious cult and faced a murder charge. Authors Paul E. Johnson and Sean Wilentz provide a descriptive account of the religious cult in their book The Kingdom of Matthias: A Story of Sex and Salvation in 19th century America. Their book follows the life of Robert Matthews and the events of his life leading up to the creation of his new religion in New York in the 1830s. Robert Matthews started to refer to himself as the prophet Matthias and recruited wealthy families to join his religion where they lived in isolation. American society in the 1830s encountered rapid change with the emergence of the market revolution and the Second Great Awakening. Impacts from the market revolution, the second great awakening, and personal factors led Matthias to create and influenced his own religion which other Americans eventually denounced. Robert Matthews grew up in New York to Scotland immigrants and attended the Anti Burgher Secession Church a sect of the Scots Presbyterian Church. The church practiced strict adherence to Calvinist orthodoxy by living and dressing plainly and following a patriarchal model. Orphaned as a child, Matthews resided with a church elder, John Maxwell. • 27. The Early Modern Atlantic Economy Edited by J. McCusker... On one hand a group of historian argues the notion that Brazil and the Caribbean experienced a sugar revolution while on the other hand another group argues that there was no such thing as a sugar revolution, what Brazil and Caribbean experienced was simply a sugar boom. In order to assess which group of historians is more accurate, one must first understand the concept of a sugar revolution and what factors must be present in order for a sugar revolution to occur. The concept of a sugar revolution is one that states there was a drastic change from the cultivation of tobacco to the cultivating of sugar cane, changing the country`s economy, politics and social structure within a short period of time. According to B.W. Higman there are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When sugar cane was introduced those planters who owned small plots of land either had to sell their land, merge their land with another planter and enter into a partnership or buy more land in order to grow sugar cane. Sugar cane could only be grown on large plots of land which ranged from 150 acres to 500 acres in Barbados and in Jamaica 300 acres to 5000 acres. The type of labour also changed within the Caribbean islands of Barbados, Jamaica, Nevis, Antigua and Montserrat from free labour to slave labour. Tobacco cultivation required a very small labour force, but with sugar as the new cash crop a large labour force was needed in which the Dutch provided by bringing African slaves. Therefore the white populations of these countries declined while the black populations increased due to the sugar revolution. Even though the governments of these Islands made efforts to keep the black to white ratio ten to one, according to Greenwood, Robert, Hamber, S, Dyde, Brian the ratio became extremely difficult to maintain during the years passed . This population change occurred during the early years of the sugar revolution up to the mid 1700s. In Barbados there were 18 000 whites and 5 500 blacks in 1645 and by 1660 there were 20 000 whites and 30 000 blacks while Jamaica had 4 500 whites and 1 500 blacks in 1658 to 8 500 whites to ... • 29. Essay on Walt Whitman Walt Whitman In parting with traditional poetic formalities, Walt Whitman alleviated a burden that impeded his ability to achieve full poetic expression. To Whitman, the strict boundaries that formal meter, structure, and rhyme imposed set limits on his stylistic freedom. This is not to say that these limits prevented Whitman from conveying his themes. Rather, they presented a contradiction to which Whitman refused to conform. In Whitman s eyes, to meet these formal guidelines one would also have to sacrifice the ability to express qualities and passion of living men. Thus, Whitman contested traditional poetic protocol because it added a layer of superficiality that concerned itself with creating perfect rhythmical, metrical, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This meant that stanzas consisted of a predetermined amount of lines or that the poem had a predetermined amount of stanzas. Augmenting this formal structure were predetermined rhyme schemes (such as abab cdcd efef gg in Shakespearean sonnets). Based on the above, we can describe traditional poetic etiquette as adhering to the suggested formal patterns predetermined by the tradition of British poetry. Just in reaching the above conclusion, a problem arises that all poets, not just Whitman, face when trying to conform to this style. This problem is that all of these rules are cumbersome. It is difficult for a poet to convey the theme of a poem when he or she is concerned with whether or not each word fits into a designated formal pattern. Yet, some would argue that this is what makes poetry such an elegant art form. Surely, Whitman recognized the genius found in Shakespeare s sonnets and other constitutive examples of traditional British poetry. However, whether or not Whitman recognized the genius of great traditional British poets, is inconsequential. What did matter was whether or not Whitman felt that this style was appropriate for him. The answer is no. Whitman found problems not simply with the fact that clinging to the traditional style might be burdensome (surely this would not have been an insurmountable task for Whitman), but his main issue with traditional style concerned the ornamental effect of formal regularity: In ...
