Physics Of The M N + 1 Ax N
The M n+1 AX n , or MAX phases are ternary carbides or nitrides with a hexagonal crystal structure,
wherein the M n+1 X n layers are interleaved with A layers. M is an early transition metal, A is an A
group element, which is mostly 13 and 14 groups and X is carbon or nitrogen. MAX phases exhibit a
unique combination of properties arising from their atomic bonding and structural characteristics
which situates them on the boundary between metals and ceramic bridging the gap between them [1
6]. Due to the metallic nature of the M and A elements, MAX phases tend to be relatively soft and
readily machinable (due to weak
M A bonds), with good thermal shock resistance as well as damage tolerance, and in addition are
excellent thermal and electrical conductors. Conversely, being carbides and nitrides they exhibit
typical ceramic properties and are good refractory materials, are very stable thermodynamically at
high temperatures, have good chemical resistance and have relatively low thermal expansion
coefficients. These properties make MAX phases amenable for use in the automotive and aerospace
industry[2, 3, 5].
The n in the M n+1 AX n phases, denotes the number of M layers sandwiched between the A layers.
Researchers have reported M 2 AX, M 3 AX 2 , and M 4 AX 3 phases, which refer to the 211, 312,
and 413 phases, respectively. In 1967, Ti 3 SiC 2 and Ti 3 GeC 2 were first synthesized by Jeitschko
and Nowotny in powder form

Stein And Stryker Summary
Stein and Stryker respond to two important challenges within the field: Stein responds to the struggle
of finding a methodology of historiography that allows for a distinction to be drawn between popular
conceptions and lived experiences of sex, gender, sexuality, love, marriage and family, while Stryker
unravels the complexity of the register of the discourse, specifically when defining the taxonomies of
gender, sex and sexuality.
The former is significant because given that sexuality and sex were considered to be parts of the
private sphere of the lives of individuals, it is hard to find reliable, primary sources on which to base a
historical timeline on. In addition, finding sources originating from both institutions of power and
individuals

Maternity Leave In Ohio
The advantages are social and cultural, giving the mother time to destress and care for her baby, while
also taking the stress of earning money away. New mothers and families will gain the security and
safety of paid maternity leave, resulting in a better future for our state, our country. An economical
advantage is for the mothers and families who will be financially stable during this time and without
the worry of earning money they need to provide necessary, basic needs to the newborn. By
implementing this solution, lower and middle class families of Ohio are better cared for and women
get the rights they deserve. All in all, the solution will bring many positive changes to our state. The
disadvantages are mostly economical for businesses, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An alternative solution is that one company decided to create a program to both allow mothers time
with their child while at the same time being able to advance in their careers. Inkwell implemented a
program where mothers would work almost as if part time and still have paid leave. They would spend
about 20 hours in the work week working and the rest of the time they would spend raising their
newborn. Not only does this help the woman s career keep moving, but it also helps her spend time
properly caring for her child. The program allows for flexibility in their schedules so they can focus on
both work and family, without putting one in front of the other. While this is progress for the issue, it
only pertains to the one company. The rest of America needs to get on board. Some of the advantages
to Inkwell s solution include the family is being supported financially, the mother can continue
improving in her career, stress is taken off of the mother because of the flexible schedule, and the
company doesn t completely lose a worker. The disadvantages of Inkwell s solution include that while
the mothers are still working part time, the employer would still need to hire and pay new employees
to fill the spots while the mothers aren t working. Another alternative solution was developed when
Marisa Torrieri wrote a Forbes article about how unpaid maternity leave could work, if the mother
takes some things into consideration. Since money is one of the main things that mothers are worried
about by taking a leave, Torrieri highlights ways to ensure the money doesn t become a problem. The
first thing a mother can do is take extra work at their job before the baby comes so they can be
financially sound during the leave. She also states that some employers may be willing to give an
employee paid leave, but most mothers are reluctant to ask. She mentions practicing saving

Thomas Gordon Ph. D.
Thomas Gordon, Ph.D., is known for being one of the most influential innovators in teaching
communication and conflict management skills to parents, teachers, students, leaders, and others. He
received his BA from DePauw University and his MA from Ohio State University. In 1942 he joined
the Army Air Force where he discovered how control based discipline and instruction causes stress
and large dropout rates (About, 2016, p.1). After leaving the army in 1946, he went to the University
of Chicago to study psychology and the relationships between people. While he was there he learned
how reflective listening and creating a trusting environment can give people the ability to solve their
own problems (Origins, 2016, p. 1). After receiving

Eleanor Roosevelt
Hernandez 1 Hernandez 1 On October 11, 1884, a remarkable individual whom would later be
considered one of the world s most influential women was born. Eleanor Roosevelt was born in New
York to her parents Anna Hall Roosevelt and Elliot Roosevelt. With her blue eyes and light brown
hair, she would warm the heart of every individual she came across. She grew to be five feet and
eleven inches, which to this day makes her the tallest first lady. With regards of being the first lady she
never regarded herself as a V.I.P., however she demonstrated her status with naturalness and
simplicity. Her simple style and elegant way s imposed her true character as the first lady. Through the

This left Eleanor in a decisive predicament. She offered to divorce him; in her heart she knew that it
would damage his and her new political career. She was also concerned for the well being of her
children. Eleanor said, It is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness. In my perspective,
I whole heartedly concur with this quote because she sacrificed herself rather than to sacrifice her
family. She was willing to stay in a marriage that didn t even suit her just because she put others
before herself. Putting all of their differences aside, she still stood by his side as a normal first lady.
This represents her strong quality and character as a powerful woman. Eleanor was admired for her
idealism and good spirits. Many individuals benefited from her warm humanitarianism and deep
concern for the world. Being that she had great work ethic and wise counsel she devoted most of her
time to charity work. In 1902 in New York City, she participated in community service projects all
over the Manhattan Lower East Side. Her passion for learning and teaching went to a settlement home
with needy children. During this time she taught dancing, literature and calisthenics. She visited needy
children in the slums and investigated working conditions in garment factories and department stores.
During World War One, Eleanor worked for the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society and American Red
Cross. She helped aid wounded and dying soldiers. She defends

Woody Guthrie s Song This Land Is Your Land
In 1940, Woody Guthrie wrote the song This Land is Your Land. He wrote it to explain that America is
everyone s, not just the people who can pay for it. He traveled across the U.S.A singing hundreds of
song that he wrote. He also made quotes that are still famous today. This song and these quotes are
similar to each other, but they also are different from each other. In these ways, This Land is Your
Land is similar to Woody s quotes. First of all, they are similar because they both say Woody will
never give up singing until his very last second on Earth. He states it in the quotes, where he says I
will fight those songs to my very last breath of air and my last drop of blood. In the song, he says
nobody living can ever stop me. Another similarity is they are saying that everyone is worth it,
everyone has a place. That is what Woody believed in. Finally, they are similar because they both
came from Woody, they both told what he felt in his heart. It is easy to tell when your hear the music
or read the quotes. They have deep passion in them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To start, one is extemporaneous, and the other is well thought out. The song was well thought out, and
the quote was extemporaneous. In addition, This Land is Your Land is a song, and the quotes,
obviously, are quotes. The last difference is that Woody made the song as kind of a response to God
Bless America, and the quotes were Woody pouring his heart out. Woody liked God Bless America
because it has what he thought was right, and you re going to think very hard about a response to a
song you like. When a person is just saying what they believe in, it isn t going to be planed

Themes In Wordsworth s I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud
My essay will be on Wordsworth s poem, I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud , which was originally
published in 1807. The poem was revised twice and the version we have was finally published in
1815. (Wordsworth s Daffodils) According to Biography.com, Wordsworth s mother died when he was
seven and he was an orphan by age 13. He was sent off to boarding school, and upon completion he
enrolled in St. John s College in Cambridge. Before his final semester of college, he set off on a
walking tour of Europe, where he encountered the aftermath of the French Revolution. During his
time in France, Wordsworth met and fell in love with Annette Vallon, who became pregnant, with his
daughter. In 1793, after the declaration of war between France and England, he returned to England
without his girlfriend and child. Upon his return to England, he was penniless and alone and these
were some of the darkest times of his life. In 1795 he was reunited with his sister, Dorothy, and that is
when his poetry took a turn from dark and gloomy to light hearted and jovial. (Encyclopedia
Britannica) While I believe that the loneliness he experienced after his parents death, the loss of his
girlfriend and child were catalysts in the writing of this poem, it is believed that his sister Dorothy was
actually the true inspiration.(Encyclopedia Britannica) In reading this poem I feel that Wordsworth use
of symbolism invokes feelings of both loneliness and hope. Wordsworth uses several techniques, such

Smith Roland Project Case Study
Smith Roland Project: Communication Barriers
The Smith Roland Project will be underway soon and we need to have a plan for communication
differences and barriers for our teams in South Carolina, Texas, and Portland. We need to be sure that
communications are sent and received while keeping our communication differences in mind.
As the project manager for this project, here is my plan to address communication barriers for our
team and to keep communication flowing in a positive way.
PHYSICAL
The first and most obvious barrier to effective communication is the physical barrier. With our team
split into three different locations, the physical distance can lead to miscommunication.
To overcome this barrier, I plan to have frequent face to face ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Meeting will be scheduled with these barriers in mind.
SEMANTICS
The second communication barrier is semantics, which is words, jargon, phrases and acronyms used at
the various locations that may not be widely known outside of a specific area or group of people.
To overcome this barrier, I ve asked the team leaders at each location to submit to me any common
acronyms used at their location along with an explanation and definition. These acronyms and
definitions will be logged and sent out to all team members for reference.
I will ask that all team members keep our communication differences in mind when speaking and as
much as possible to refrain from using local jargon or catch phrases. Additionally I will make sure to
communicate to all team members that they should feel comfortable asking questions when an
acronym or phrase is not clear.
PERSONAL
The third barrier to communication is personal barriers. Personal communication barriers are varied
and can include individual styles of sending and receiving messages, stereotypes, personality
differences, education and background differences,

Comparison of The Attitudes Of Arthur Birling And Sheila Birling From An Inspector Calls by J.B.
Priestley An Inspector Calls by J.B Priestley was first performed in 1945. The play was set in 1912
before the war; it centres on the wealthy Birling family. A visit from the mysterious Inspector Goole,
during the celebration of Sheila Birling s and Gerald Croft s engagement, proves to be a horrifying
experience for them as they learn that they have all played a part in the suicide of a young girl called
Eva Smith. From the start we see that Mr Birling is a hardheaded businessman and seems to look out
for only himself and his reputation. In his speech to Gerald and Eric he tells them a man has to make

figure in society he is. He then says that by 1940 there will be peace and prosperity and rapid progress

Mr Birling was wrong. This shows us that what Birling was saying was a lie. It showed people how
ignorant Mr Birling was. This made you wonder if all of his priorities were wrong. When we are told
the stories of how both characters were connected to Eva Smith. We see although Sheila is caring she
treated Eva smith no better than her father did and that what they did to her was quite similar. They
both had her thrown out from her job. They both did it for pathetic reasons. Neither of them thought
about how the consequences would affect Eva. Mr Birling threw Eva smith out of her job at his
Factory because she asked for a small pay rise of just under three shillings. She then got a Job in a
shop called Milwards. This was a respectable shop where many middle class people bought clothes.
She was enjoying it there and liked being among the clothes. Sheila Birling shopped there and then
Eva Smith brought out a dress that looked beautiful on her. Sheila Birling tried it on and it

The Little Bison River flows from small glaciers in the high cirques of the Rocky Mountains east to
the Great Plains of North America, where it ultimately joins the Missouri system. The valley through
the Rockies contains a few small towns which are supported by the ski industry and tourism. Recently,
extensive natural gas deposits have been discovered in the area, and salvage archaeology projects have
been funded to assess the nature of archaeological resources prior to the construction of pipelines,
access roads, and well heads. You have been asked to summarize the prehistory of the area for a book

conducted extensive judgemental surveys during initial impact assessment, concentrating on the
grasslands of the Little Bison valley, two arbitrarily chosen tributary valleys (Cripple Creek and Silver
Creek), one cirque (below Smith Peak) and the Inverness Plateau. Four site types were defined. Camp
sites contain a wide range of artifact types and fire broken rock. Kill sites contain a restricted range of
artifacts (mainly projectile points) and large quantities of bone. Lithic scatters are small sites with no
diagnostic artifacts. Quarries have large quantities of debitage, usually associated with shallow pits
dug into bedrock. The distribution of sites and diagnostic artifacts is shown in Figure 8.1. Recently R.

Slipped Disc Complications
Roughly, 80% of the population will experience lower back pain once in their lifespan, while two
thirds of the population will experience neck pain. As ludicrous as it might appear, the ugly truth about
slipped disc complications is that they are increasing at an alarming rate. Back pain and neck pain are
the most common reasons of immobility in individuals under 45 years old. It is now very ubiquitous
and not only found in elderly, or after a traumatic happening. A slipped disc can happen throughout the
entire spine but is most common in the cervical and lumbar area. Inappropriate posture, unwarranted
or protracted axial weight bearing activities are the culprits; in other words, extended sitting or lifting
and carrying of hulking objects that cause uneven distribution of weight across your spinal joint or the
spinal discs. Over the time, axial loading (sitting or carrying weighty loads) can dehydrate your spinal

surgery or some years later, although they are most common in the first three months after surgery.
Furthermore, after surgery, the patient is at higher risk of further relapses (15% to 20% chance). Some
patients ended up having 2 or more surgeries on the same or a neighboring segment. The first few
years after the operation, one might feel very comfy and calmed. The ill starred realism is that the
efficiency of the spinal surgery does not last. Pain, paresthesia, stiffness and numbness are most likely

Well, people who work for the district think that school sports cut of education are wrong. A study
shows that kids actually do well and have a higher percent on tests, than others who do not do sports.
Sports make the mind stronger. In text it states, The ancient Greeks understood that to discipline the

Iran-Contra Affairs Case Study
The N.S.C. staff was already engaged in covert operations with the contras when, in the summer of
1985, the Government of Israel proposed that missiles be sold to Iran in return for the release of seven
American hostages held in Lebanon and the prospect of improved relations with Iran. The Secretaries
of State and Defense repeatedly opposed such sales to a Government designated by the United States
as a supporter of international terrorism. They called it a straight arms for hostages deal that was
contrary to U.S. public policy. They also argued that these sales would violate the Arms Export

when the Iranian operation began, North was put in charge of both operations. This allowed North to

Symbolism and Theme in Everyday Use
The short story Everyday Use by Alice Walker differentiates between a fake and a real heritage. To
illustrate her point she uses one family consisting of a mother and her two daughters and the way each
of them views their ancestry and heritage. Through the behavior of these three people Walker is able
to clearly show the little things that separate a real heritage from the assumed fake mask. During the
time of many positive changes to the lives of black people across the America, the author illustrates
what the true African American heritage should look like, compared to empty claims by those who
have no understanding it.
The first and perhaps the least complex of the symbols in the story is Mama s yard. In the very

At the same time, judging from the way that Dee acts throughout her visit, such bonds to one s
heritage can be easily broken or even completely destroyed. And when these bonds are finally
destroyed it becomes impossible for people like Dee to understand the meaning of such little objects
like the quilts in much the same way as it is impossible for her to even understand the origins and the
legacy of her name. Again the history behind the quilts is really important so Mama describes more of
it: Bits and pieces of Grandpa Jarrell s paisley shirts. And one teeny faded blue piece, about the size of
a penny matchbox, that was from Great Grandpa Ezra s uniform that he wore in the Civil War (495).
Made out of many small pieces of Maggie s and Dee s ancestors clothes, these quilts visually display
the history of their family, including all of the struggles such as war, racism and poverty experienced
by its members over last century. What makes these quilts even more valuable and important is the
fact that because of her poverty Mama considers her heritage, contained in the things like these quilts,
as the most important material object in her possession. Therefore she decides that the best way to
honor this heritage would be to pass them to Maggie to be used like they were intended to by those
who made the quilts and the legacy contained inside of them. The quilts then summarize the great and
long heritage, passed on

Two And A Half Men Deviant Analysis
I personally have never seen the show Two and a Half Men , but based on what you wrote I could see
where people in society could view this as deviant. For example, someone living in the neighborhood
and just seeing them on a daily basis could possibly form their opinion that the men are homosexual
and trying to raise a child. I could also see the other perceptive where one is a womanizer and
alcoholic while the other one is socially awkward.
Society could instantly form the opinion that they
don t need to be raising a child because of their lifestyle and behaviors. I do agree that some things are
observed in larger cities that are more acceptable than smaller cities. I feel this is accepted because of
the diversity of the people living within that city. Whereas, in your city or town it is mostly people that

Should Legal System Be Used To Resolve Purposeful Misconduct
The legal system should be used to resolve purposeful misconduct; instead frivolous lawsuits have
affected every aspect of our society because individuals with legitimate grievances have been
trivialized to a get rich quick mentality that is permeating American society. There was a time if
someone spilled coffee on their lap or tripped on a raised sidewalk, they called themselves clumsy, but
today they call an attorney. Attorneys have created the mindset that anyone can win the legal lottery
by suing over situations that could have been resolved by simply turning the other cheek. To turn the
other cheek, is a biblical instruction to urge people to be motivated by love and to have a desire for the
redemption and forgiveness of offenders in lieu of personal revenge and/or vengeance. It was also not
intended for people to be passive victims nor suffer in silence and refuse to seek legal protection if a
person provoked another into a confrontation with a literal slap or with stinging sarcasm the person

The language of an effective song inspires deeper thinking, puts a thought in a new perspective, helps
cement prior knowledge, opens the eyes of the audience. These lyrics aid in that ah ha moment when
people see the world in a new light, or they may serve as reassurance, helping the listener feel
understood and less alone. Lyrics can, and should be powerful.
The lyrics from Vessel exemplify this power. Every song on the album has at least a few sentences that
make listeners stop in their tracks. In some songs, like Migraine or Car Radio, every line does that.
Car Radio expands on the idea that Sometimes quiet is violent. It explores the dark places human
minds may go if given the opportunity. Migraine speaks on the complexity of life, especially
elaborating on the loneliness that accompanies not feeling understood and how that loneliness causes
depression while encouraging listeners to hope. Knowing there are others out there listening to this
song, thinking the same thoughts, even if they are strangers, alleviates that lonely feeling. Migraine
also urges listeners to keep fighting, to never give up on their life goals or on life itself. The only miss

Comparing Buddhism and Christianity Essay

In the early sixth century Christianity was evolving at a rapid pace. The spread of Christianity was not
only moving westward through Europe, but it was also moving eastward down the Silk Road. The
eastward spread of Christianity was primarily a form of Christianity known as Nestorianism, after the
teachings of Nestorius, a fifth century patriarch. By 635 Nestorian Christianity had reached the heart
of China spreading through all of Persia and India. During the middle of the seventh century Nestorian
churches were found in cities all along the Silk Road, though there were unquestionably many fewer
Christians than Buddhists in Asia Up until the turn of the sixteenth century Christianity endured ...

The sutra explains that salvation could be gained by calling on the name of Amitabha with absolute

Universal Health Care System Of Universal Healthcare
Individuals who reside in countries practicing a system of universal health care have access to the
health services they require, which, consequently, leads to overall healthier populations. Such health
services include, amongst other things, prevention promotion, treatment, rehabilitation and palliative
care.(who.org) These services are provided without the risk of monetary adversity or destitution for
those who use them. Ease of access to health facilities and care in turn leads to healthier people.
Universal health care systems bring the entire populace into contact with good quality services and
health professionals, in addition to medicines and technologies that aid in the diagnosis and treatment
of medical problems. In order to meet the urgent well being needs of the population, such systems
employ a people centered combined care approach to treatment that incorporates:
Information programs which support healthy lifestyles and avoidance of sickness
early detection of chronic conditions
capability to treat diseases
assistance for patients in convalescence and
provision, where needed, of sympathetic palliative care (who.org)
The ambition of universal health is always to deliver a growing number of health services over time
and to guarantee that populations have opportunities to participate in strategic preventive health
programs. In this way, the goal of countries that provide universal health care is to continually work
and strive to maintain healthier

Similarities and Differences of Paradise Lost and...
Between the two novels, Paradise Lost and Frankenstein, there are many striking similarities. What
makes these two books so wonderful to read is the author s ability to write about the ultimate struggle;
the struggle between God and Satan, or Good and Evil. The characters in Paradise Lost and in
Frankenstein seem to be very similar to one another. God and Victor Frankenstein have many
similarities. One of their similarities is that they are both creators of new life. The monster, Victor s
creation, also shows remarkable similarities, but not with God. The monster shows similarities with
Satan and Adam. At first these characters seem very plain and tasteless, but as the stories go on and
the characters become deeper beings, the interest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Just as Satan and Adam both fall from God s grace, the monster appears to fall from the grace of his
God and his creator as well, Victor. Because the stories are so similar, it s almost as if the monster is
living the epic poem Paradise Lost!
In both novels the reader is able to feel sorrow for the evil beings. The reader almost feels compassion
for the beings suffering. Is this because we, as people, better relate to sin? It seems that the reader
wants to side with evil because even when our key examples, Adam and Eve, seem faultless, they can
t refuse to into a life of sin. Through this, the reader feels sympathy for someone or something that is
an outcast. Outcasts of these two stories are Adam and Eve to God, Satan to God, and the monster to
Victor. We, as readers, also begin to see the unfairness of our society today.
While most of Frankenstein resembles God and Satan or Gad and Adam, Eve is not forgotten. Eve is
just less noticeable. Mary Shelly did this on purpose. All of Mary Shelly s good verses bad
relationships seem superficially masculinized. By making Frankenstein more masculine, Mary Shelly
is pulling away from Milton s idea of Eve and his female illustration that the fall was due to a woman.
Whenever Paradise Lost is mentioned in Mary Shelly s novel, Frankenstein, Eve is always left out.
Eve is never mentioned. The absence of the Eve character is seen when the monster asks Victor for a
female companion. The monster

Diodorus Essay
Shelley s friend the banker Horace Smith stayed with the poet and his wife Mary (author of
Frankenstein) in the Christmas season of 1817. One evening, they began to discuss recent discoveries
in the Near East. In the wake of Napoleon s conquest of Egypt in 1798, the archeological treasures
found there stimulated the European imagination. The power of pharaonic Egypt had seemed eternal,
but now this once great empire was (and had long been) in ruins, a feeble shadow.
Shelley and Smith remembered the Roman era historian Diodorus Siculus, who described a statue of
Ozymandias, more commonly known as Rameses II (possibly the pharaoh referred to in the Book of
Exodus). Diodorus reports the inscription on the statue, which he claims was the largest in Egypt, as
follows: King of Kings Ozymandias am I. If any want to know how great I am and where I lie, let him
outdo me in my work. (The statue and its inscription do not survive, and were not seen by Shelley; his
inspiration for Ozymandias was verbal rather than visual.)
Stimulated by their conversation, Smith and Shelley wrote sonnets based on the passage in Diodorus.
Smith produced a now forgotten poem with the unfortunate title On a Stupendous Leg of Granite,
Discovered Standing by Itself in the Deserts of Egypt, with the Inscription Inserted Below. ... Show

The visage is taken apart by the poet, who collaborates with time s ruinous force. Shelley says nothing
about the rest of the face; he describes only the mouth, with its frown,/And wrinkled lip, and sneer of
cold command. Cold command is the emblem of the empire building ruler, of the tyrannical kind that
Shelley despised. Ozymandias resembles the monstrous George III of our other Shelley sonnet,
England in 1819. (Surprisingly, surviving statues of Rameses II, aka Ozymandias, show him with a

Chapter 7 Of Outliers By Gwen Gladwell
Gladwell begins the chapter by narrating the crash of Korean Air flight 80. The plane was in good
condition and so was the weather; but tragedy ends up slamming into the side of a mountain. Gladwell
explains that plane crashes are rare, and in Chapter 7 of Outliers, he wants the reader to know how and
why these pilots have been failing to land planes. Consequently, Gladwell begins to explain how
Korean Air turned itself around, and he discusses how important it is to address cultural differences
and legacies. Crashes are rare, and most of the time are consequences of many unrelated factors. Many
believe that airplane crashes are the cause of bad piloting or harsh weather; but other factors are
overlooked. Suren Ratwatte have been studying airplane

Background Checks Are The Most Effective Way Of Preventing...
Background checks are the most effective way of preventing gun crimes. There are multiple cases of
school and community shootings and how it could be prevented if there were some sort of system to
catch perpetrators. Gun violence has been an issue since the 1970s and started to peak in the 1980s
and 1990s. Gun Violence is violence committed with the use of a gun and recently there has been an
increase in gun crimes, but due to background checks they have decreased. A background check is the
process of looking up and compiling criminal records, commercial records and financial records of an
individual or an organization. It is proven that background checks reduce homicide and suicides and
background checks are the most effective way to reduce gun related crimes. Background checks are
only as effective as the person or company doing it, so when a gun company fails to complete a proper
background check, they should be held accountable for the customer s actions.
Backgrounds checks are the most effective way of preventing gun related crimes. A study, done by the
National Library of Medicine, examines the relationship between the types of background information
check required by states prior to firearm purchases, and firearm deaths and the results of the study
concluded that more background checks are associated with fewer deaths. The Brady Handgun

Comparing Marge Piercy s Barbie Doll And Richard Cory
The ugly truth Being an outcast in society is not fun. People just want to be accepted for who they are
and live their life in peace. That can be hard when we live in a world where we demand so much.
Barbie doll by Marge Piercy and Richard Cory by Edward Arlington Robinson, show that no matter
how happy someone looks on the outside, they may feel miserable and destructive on the inside. Both
stories compare and contrast two perspectives from a man and a woman; they demonstrate how
society affects them both in different ways. The reality of what you perceive from someone, is not
always accurate. Marge Piercy was born March 31, 1936 in Detroit. However, Marge didn t meet the

In the casket displayed on satin she lay with the undertaker s cosmetics painted on, a turned up putty

The Tortilla Curtain Analysis
In The Tortilla Curtain, T.C. Boyle strives to show the economic and social divide between illegal
immigrants and middle class American citizens. He does this by showing Candido Rincon, an
immigrant from Tepoztlan, Mexico, crossing paths multiple times with Delaney Mossbacher, a white
middle class American living in the complex of Arroyo Blanco. Delaney, a self proclaimed Democrat,
over his interactions with Candido and other Hispanics, deviates from his liberal views and descends
into overt racism. Likewise, Candido has the intentions that mirror his name the name Candido comes
from the latin word candidus, a, um which has a connotation of pureness but as he gets more and more
desperate, he diverges from his honest work and resorts to stealing and scavenging. Candido s and
Delaney s actions display each s descent into savagery. The coyote, a traditional symbol of savagery,
applies to both Candido and Delaney. Delaney writes an entire entrance into his nature blog Pilgrim at
Topanga Creek regarding the coyotes: yet I can t help thinking too of the missing pets, the trail of
suspicion, the next baby left unattended on the patio. The coyotes keep coming, breeding up to fill in
the gaps, moving in where the living is easy. They are cunning, versatile, hungry and unstoppable
(215). The coyote described is clearly a symbol for illegal immigrants, and, more specifically,
Candido. Each phrase is a specific reference to a dynamic or event of the story: the trail

The Pros And Cons Of The Equal Protection Clause
The Equal Protection Clause is part of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution.
The clause provides that no state shall deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of
the laws . Two landmark 14th Amendment cases are Plessy v. Ferguson and Brown v. Board of
Education. However, each case treated the 14th Amendment differently and this caused a different
outcome for each court case. In the Plessy v. Ferguson case, the statute of Louisiana, acts of 1890, c.
111 requires train companies to provide separate but equal usage for colored and white races. Plessy
was a resident in the state of Louisiana which he was of mixed race as he was seven eighths caucasian
and one eighth black. He tried to use the whites only train section and was arrested. Plessy then sued
Louisiana State Supreme Justice, the Hon. John H. Ferguson for violating his 13th Amendment which
prevents slavery and his 14th Amendment which is equal protection under US laws. ( Plessy v.
Ferguson , 1). The Supreme Court, in a 7 1 decision, favored Ferguson. The majority rejected Plessy s
argument about violating his 13th and 14th Amendment rights. Plessy s 14th Amendment argument
was rejected because the Supreme Court states that races could be separate and equal to each other.
This set a precedent stating that separate but equal was lawful and constitutional. Justice Henry Brown
wrote the majority opinion, which rejected Plessy s argument that the Louisiana law conflicted with

The Recent Engagement of Contemporary Islamic Thought with Modernity in the West
Modernization theory has been one of the master theoretical narratives to understand the major
institutional and cultural transformation from traditional societies to modern ones. It was developed by
the founders of sociology and has dominated the widespread understanding and explanations of many
social differentiation processes including rationalization, individualization, urbanization, and
secularization for several decades. Thus, sociologists believed that the consequences of modernization
were unavoidable route and common destinations and patters for modern or all ... Show more content

They suggest that we should re systematize and correct the classical theory of modernization in the
light of multiple modernities frameworks because multiple modernities do not assume that global
modernity is derived from the West as a single pattern (source) and describe the possibility of a plural
modernity experiences. In fact, there are many modernities, not only one single patter of
modernization. These developments forced sociologists for a paradigm shift in the dominant one side
understanding of western modernity.
In this context, Islam and the discourse of western Muslim intellectuals have gradually gained
visibility and significance through the continuing migration and the growth of new generations in the
western societies. Western Islam also has emerged in the hearth of modernity; yet did not follow the
same patters of classical modernization trends. However, it could not escape the hegemonic influence
of modernity. As a result, western Islam is emerging not only as a response to the challenges
(premises) of modernity, but also through a transformative dialectical engagement with the ethos of
modernity, which gradually pave the path towards the rise of Islamic modernism (Islamic modernity)
in the west. Hence, the multiple modernities thesis serves as a more adequate theoretical approach
than the prevailing modernization, the secularization perspective or many other approaches to

Religious Freedom And Expression Across The World
Religion is one of the most sensitive issues and almost all people participate in some kind of religious
practice. Even though every religion encourages the idea of peace, tolerance, and acceptance almost
no person stays peaceful or tolerates anyone or anything when it comes to religious differences.
History is full of religious wars and some of them have continued for years and were the cause of
many of men, women, and children s deaths. The issue of religious freedom and expression across the
world has been apparent since the beginning of time and it seems as though these expressions have
separated many groups of people throughout history. Issues of religious confliction and persecution
has also been a major problem throughout the history of mankind. From Wars to genocide and slavery,
religion has been on the forefront of some of mankind s most disturbing moments and is commonly
used as a justification of such acts. These events have effected not only America but every country in
the world and every demographic across the globe. Throughout this paper many of these events will
be discussed in an attempt to open our eyes to how much religion really does separate us as a people.

Eating Disorders
Adolescents are especially susceptible to eating disorders because of the development of their self
image around this time of their lives. Bulimia, anorexia and binge eating are all eating disorders that
teenagers suffer from. Results of Anorexia nervosa can prove to be fatal; as the body is starved so are
the muscles. The heart, being a muscle, can consequently begin to weaken, and heart failure will very
likely become a reality. The low levels of sodium, zinc, potassium and calcium, associated with
anorexia can cause unusual heart rhythms. Sudden death caused by electrolyte and mineral disorder
may happen. The blood bone marrow is also interrupted. Anemia is related with the amount of weight
lost and the decreased capability to fight pathogens and infections [ (CDC) ]. Obtaining the accurate
figures, in terms of the prevalence and other facts about eating disorders is difficult. It is not
mandatory for Anorexia Nervosa and Related Eating Disorders (ANRED) to report eating disorders;
this, the secretiveness, and denial of people with eating disorders makes it difficult to obtain an

Analysis Of Dante s The Of Hell
Jacob Barnett
Essay#2
Reid
Title
I think Dante s description of Hell is a wonderful work of literature. Dante uses numerous literary
techniques to describe his envisionment of Hell to the reader. In my opinion, one of the most affective
techniques used by Dante is symbolism. It would be a very difficult task to compile a brief list of
significant symbols from the Cantos that we read in class. Dante utilized many symbols throughout
each canto. Some of the symbols that Dante used in Inferno are well defined and easy to interpret,
while other symbols are much more difficult to recognize and understand. For this paper, I will be
analyzing multiple symbols from Dante s Inferno. Some of the symbols came from the Canto s that
were included in class readings while others were depicted throughout the Canto s that were not
assigned readings.
I found that one of the major symbols that reoccurred throughout the poem is the idea of a continuing
journey. This was depicted in the very first line of the poem when Dante s life was compared to a road
or pathway which Dante is halfway through. The specificity of the piece noting that Dante is halfway
through further emphasizes the symbolism of continuing a journey by out rightly stating that he has
begun but not yet finished. Therefore, when Dante strays from the intended path in the beginning of
the first Canto he has symbolically strayed from the right kind of life . Dante s journey with Virgil
through the many layers of hell also

The Imf ( International Monetary Fund )
The IMF (International Monetary Fund), also known as the Fund, was conceived at a UN conference
in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, United States, in July 1944. The 44 countries at that conference
sought to build a framework for economic cooperation to avoid a repetition of the competitive
devaluations that had contributed to the Great Depression of the 1930s
(https://www.imf.org/external/about.htm). Currently, the organization is headquartered in Washington,
D. C. Originally, the IMF was designed to promote economic cooperation internationally and provide
short term loans to member countries for the benefit of trade.
During the 1980 s, many countries were experiencing a crisis of debt. During this time, The IMF has
taken on the role of bailing out countries with loans that have certain conditions attached. These loans
are usually referenced as Structural Adjustment Policies (SAPs). In order for a country to get a loan,
the policies of the IMF must be followed. Therefore, monetary values can be dictated on education,
healthcare, and the environment.
In 2010, the country of Greece experienced one of the worst financial crises in modern history. During
this time, The IMF wanted to be involved with the financial support package that Greece (and other
countries in the Eurozone) would receive. That same year, French President Nikolas Sarkozy stated I

about the lack of their progress total lack of progress. Of course, some are progressing well, but that
too is perhaps more because of the personal attention that the Master gives them rather than by their
own effort, and I am not referring especially to their spiritual practice but to their lifestyle. You know,
in Sahaj Marg we are always talking of the Master giving the inner spiritual condition, which for him
is a matter of a second, whereas character formation is the responsibility of the abhyasi. I think, in
general, abhyasis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It doesn t mean it only laughs at locks. The locksmith is symbolic of every circumstance that can come
between the lover and the beloved. You remember the old story of the man who was so besotted with a
girl that when she went out of town, he followed her. There was a river to cross, and the river was in
flood. He did not know what to do and then he found something like a log of wood. He took that log
of wood and went across the river; and then he found a light burning in the house on the first floor. He
said, That must be my beloved s room. And he saw to his surprise a thick rope hanging, and he said,
Oh, she loves me so much that she has left a rope for me, and he climbed up using it. And when he
entered the room, the girl was stunned. She said, How did you come? He said Oh, there was a boat,
you know, there was a log of wood; I crossed the river. And you have left this rope for me. And to
their horror, they found that the log of wood was a human corpse and the rope was a python! Now,
suppose that lover had been standing on the opposite side I mean I am giving a deliberate twist in
interpretation to this story. Suppose he had stood there waiting until the flood subsided? Then he
found the water was muddy because it was a flooding river. He waited till the water was clear. Then he
tested it to make sure that there was no contamination. Then he crossed it. What would have
happened? So for devoted, loving souls who use these excuses to not come near, I

Culture of North Korea
North Korea has a vast and growing culture. With a population of 24 million citizens living in this
isolated area, most of them are ethnically Korean even with China being such a close neighbor. With
such a dense population, the same believes and religion practiced throughout its nation. North Korea is
located in eastern Asia with approximately 55% in the north. The Sea of Japan borders North Korea s
eastern shore and the Yellow sea boarders the western portion of the land. The boarder that separates
North Korea from South Korea is approximately 148 Miles long. North Korea shares boarders with
China being directly north and a small boarder is joint with Russia in the far northeastern corner of the
country. (Encyclopaedia

Determinism And Free Will In Harry Potter And The Prisoner...
The controversy of whether the doctrine of determinism or free will guides us throughout our life is
constantly debated. Is there a superior being that determines everything that occurs, or are humans free
to do whatever they choose? In stories, the collaboration of fate and free will propels the actions of
characters throughout the plot. In J.K. Rowling s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, there is a
certain fate ordained, but there is free will that brings the characters to their fates. On the contrary, the
chorus of Euripides Medea states the gods find a way, against all expectation, to do what they
want...And that is exactly how this case turned out (Euripides 1467 1469), suggesting that whatever
Medea does is constrained the the fate determined by the gods. That she enacts the judgement of the
gods is what she considers the bindings of fate, but under the lens of Harry Potter, Rowling would
treat this as free will that endows fate.
The notion that there is a superior force that decides fate is present in the novel and the play, although
the extent of this power contrasts. Dumbledore acts as a semi god figure in Harry Potter, determining
the fates of Buckbeak and Sirius Black by pushing Hermione and Harry to use the Time Turner. Had
he not opened up this possibility to them, the salvation of the doomed characters would not have been
possible. As the events unfold with the time travel, Buckbeak s liberation from execution leads
Dumbledore to remark How

MAX phases exhibit a unique combination of properties arising from their atomic bonding and structural characteristics which situates them on the boundary between metals and ceramic bridging the gap between them [1 6]. Due to the metallic nature of the M and A elements, MAX phases tend to be relatively soft and readily machinable (due to weak M A bonds), with good thermal shock resistance as well as damage tolerance, and in addition are excellent thermal and electrical conductors. Conversely, being carbides and nitrides they exhibit typical ceramic properties and are good refractory materials, are very stable thermodynamically at high temperatures, have good chemical resistance and have relatively low thermal expansion coefficients. These properties make MAX phases amenable for use in the automotive and aerospace industry[2, 3, 5]. The n in the M n+1 AX n phases, denotes the number of M layers sandwiched between the A layers. Researchers have reported M 2 AX, M 3 AX 2 , and M 4 AX 3 phases, which refer to the 211, 312, and 413 phases, respectively. Stein And Stryker Summary Stein and Stryker respond to two important challenges within the field: Stein responds to the struggle of finding a methodology of historiography that allows for a distinction to be drawn between popular conceptions and lived experiences of sex, gender, sexuality, love, marriage and family, while Stryker unravels the complexity of the register of the discourse, specifically when defining the taxonomies of gender, sex and sexuality. The former is significant because given that sexuality and sex were considered to be parts of the private sphere of the lives of individuals, it is hard to find reliable, primary sources on which to base a historical timeline on. New mothers and families will gain the security and safety of paid maternity leave, resulting in a better future for our state, our country. An economical advantage is for the mothers and families who will be financially stable during this time and without the worry of earning money they need to provide necessary, basic needs to the newborn. An alternative solution is that one company decided to create a program to both allow mothers time with their child while at the same time being able to advance in their careers. Inkwell implemented a program where mothers would work almost as if part time and still have paid leave. They would spend about 20 hours in the work week working and the rest of the time they would spend raising their newborn. Not only does this help the woman s career keep moving, but it also helps her spend time properly caring for her child. The program allows for flexibility in their schedules so they can focus on both work and family, without putting one in front of the other. While this is progress for the issue, it only pertains to the one company. The rest of America needs to get on board. Some of the advantages to Inkwell s solution include the family is being supported financially, the mother can continue improving in her career, stress is taken off of the mother because of the flexible schedule, and the company doesn t completely lose a worker. The disadvantages of Inkwell s solution include that while the mothers are still working part time, the employer would still need to hire and pay new employees to fill the spots while the mothers aren t working. Another alternative solution was developed when Marisa Torrieri wrote a Forbes article about how unpaid maternity leave could work, if the mother takes some things into consideration. Since money is one of the main things that mothers are worried about by taking a leave, Torrieri highlights ways to ensure the money doesn t become a problem. The first thing a mother can do is take extra work at their job before the baby comes so they can be financially sound during the leave. Because the stories are so similar, it s almost as if the monster is living the epic poem Paradise Lost! In both novels the reader is able to feel sorrow for the evil beings. The reader almost feels compassion for the beings suffering. Is this because we, as people, better relate to sin? It seems that the reader wants to side with evil because even when our key examples, Adam and Eve, seem faultless, they can t refuse to into a life of sin. Through this, the reader feels sympathy for someone or something that is an outcast. Outcasts of these two stories are Adam and Eve to God, Satan to God, and the monster to Victor. We, as readers, also begin to see the unfairness of our society today. While most of Frankenstein resembles God and Satan or Gad and Adam, Eve is not forgotten. Eve is just less noticeable. Mary Shelly did this on purpose. All of Mary Shelly s good verses bad relationships seem superficially masculinized. By making Frankenstein more masculine, Mary Shelly is pulling away from Milton s idea of Eve and his female illustration that the fall was due to a woman. Whenever Paradise Lost is mentioned in Mary Shelly s novel, Frankenstein, Eve is always left out. Eve is never mentioned. The absence of the Eve character is seen when the monster asks Victor for a female companion. The monster ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 24. Diodorus Essay Shelley s friend the banker Horace Smith stayed with the poet and his wife Mary (author of Frankenstein) in the Christmas season of 1817. One evening, they began to discuss recent discoveries in the Near East. In the wake of Napoleon s conquest of Egypt in 1798, the archeological treasures found there stimulated the European imagination. The power of pharaonic Egypt had seemed eternal, but now this once great empire was (and had long been) in ruins, a feeble shadow. Shelley and Smith remembered the Roman era historian Diodorus Siculus, who described a statue of Ozymandias, more commonly known as Rameses II (possibly the pharaoh referred to in the Book of Exodus). Diodorus reports the inscription on the statue, which he claims was the largest in Egypt, as follows: King of Kings Ozymandias am I. If any want to know how great I am and where I lie, let him outdo me in my work. (The statue and its inscription do not survive, and were not seen by Shelley; his inspiration for Ozymandias was verbal rather than visual.) Stimulated by their conversation, Smith and Shelley wrote sonnets based on the passage in Diodorus. Smith produced a now forgotten poem with the unfortunate title On a Stupendous Leg of Granite, Discovered Standing by Itself in the Deserts of Egypt, with the Inscription Inserted Below. ... There are multiple cases of school and community shootings and how it could be prevented if there were some sort of system to catch perpetrators. Gun violence has been an issue since the 1970s and started to peak in the 1980s and 1990s. Gun Violence is violence committed with the use of a gun and recently there has been an increase in gun crimes, but due to background checks they have decreased. A background check is the process of looking up and compiling criminal records, commercial records and financial records of an individual or an organization. It is proven that background checks reduce homicide and suicides and background checks are the most effective way to reduce gun related crimes. Background checks are only as effective as the person or company doing it, so when a gun company fails to complete a proper background check, they should be held accountable for the customer s actions. Backgrounds checks are the most effective way of preventing gun related crimes. A study, done by the National Library of Medicine, examines the relationship between the types of background information check required by states prior to firearm purchases, and firearm deaths and the results of the study concluded that more background checks are associated with fewer deaths. • 29. The Tortilla Curtain Analysis In The Tortilla Curtain, T.C. Boyle strives to show the economic and social divide between illegal immigrants and middle class American citizens. He does this by showing Candido Rincon, an immigrant from Tepoztlan, Mexico, crossing paths multiple times with Delaney Mossbacher, a white middle class American living in the complex of Arroyo Blanco. Delaney, a self proclaimed Democrat, over his interactions with Candido and other Hispanics, deviates from his liberal views and descends into overt racism. Likewise, Candido has the intentions that mirror his name the name Candido comes from the latin word candidus, a, um which has a connotation of pureness but as he gets more and more desperate, he diverges from his honest work and resorts to stealing and scavenging. Candido s and Delaney s actions display each s descent into savagery. The coyote, a traditional symbol of savagery, applies to both Candido and Delaney. Delaney writes an entire entrance into his nature blog Pilgrim at Topanga Creek regarding the coyotes: yet I can t help thinking too of the missing pets, the trail of suspicion, the next baby left unattended on the patio. The coyotes keep coming, breeding up to fill in the gaps, moving in where the living is easy. They are cunning, versatile, hungry and unstoppable (215). The clause provides that no state shall deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws . Two landmark 14th Amendment cases are Plessy v. Ferguson and Brown v. Board of Education. However, each case treated the 14th Amendment differently and this caused a different outcome for each court case. In the Plessy v. Ferguson case, the statute of Louisiana, acts of 1890, c. 111 requires train companies to provide separate but equal usage for colored and white races. Plessy was a resident in the state of Louisiana which he was of mixed race as he was seven eighths caucasian and one eighth black. He tried to use the whites only train section and was arrested. Plessy then sued Louisiana State Supreme Justice, the Hon. John H. Ferguson for violating his 13th Amendment which prevents slavery and his 14th Amendment which is equal protection under US laws. ( Plessy v. Ferguson , 1). The Supreme Court, in a 7 1 decision, favored Ferguson. The majority rejected Plessy s argument about violating his 13th and 14th Amendment rights. Plessy s 14th Amendment argument was rejected because the Supreme Court states that races could be separate and equal to each other. This set a precedent stating that separate but equal was lawful and constitutional. • 39. Analysis Of Dante s The Of Hell Jacob Barnett Essay#2 Reid Title I think Dante s description of Hell is a wonderful work of literature. Dante uses numerous literary techniques to describe his envisionment of Hell to the reader. In my opinion, one of the most affective techniques used by Dante is symbolism. It would be a very difficult task to compile a brief list of significant symbols from the Cantos that we read in class. Dante utilized many symbols throughout each canto. Some of the symbols that Dante used in Inferno are well defined and easy to interpret, while other symbols are much more difficult to recognize and understand. For this paper, I will be analyzing multiple symbols from Dante s Inferno. Some of the symbols came from the Canto s that were included in class readings while others were depicted throughout the Canto s that were not assigned readings. I found that one of the major symbols that reoccurred throughout the poem is the idea of a continuing journey. This was depicted in the very first line of the poem when Dante s life was compared to a road or pathway which Dante is halfway through. The specificity of the piece noting that Dante is halfway through further emphasizes the symbolism of continuing a journey by out rightly stating that he has begun but not yet finished. Therefore, when Dante strays from the intended path in the beginning of the first Canto he has symbolically strayed from the right kind of life . Currently, the organization is headquartered in Washington, D. C. • 46. Determinism And Free Will In Harry Potter And The Prisoner... The controversy of whether the doctrine of determinism or free will guides us throughout our life is constantly debated. Is there a superior being that determines everything that occurs, or are humans free to do whatever they choose? In stories, the collaboration of fate and free will propels the actions of characters throughout the plot. In J.K. Rowling s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, there is a certain fate ordained, but there is free will that brings the characters to their fates. On the contrary, the chorus of Euripides Medea states the gods find a way, against all expectation, to do what they want...And that is exactly how this case turned out (Euripides 1467 1469), suggesting that whatever Medea does is constrained the the fate determined by the gods. That she enacts the judgement of the gods is what she considers the bindings of fate, but under the lens of Harry Potter, Rowling would treat this as free will that endows fate. The notion that there is a superior force that decides fate is present in the novel and the play, although the extent of this power contrasts.
