Marcion Against Gnosticism
Marcion also mimicked the church by having his own bishops and a similar system to the church.
Because of these things, the church had to recover quickly by meeting the challenge that was created.
Although the Marcion church did challenge the Christian church, its beliefs were very similar to the
Gnostic beliefs in that they believed that the Old Testament was not scripture and should not be treated
as such.
Up until the mid to late 1900 s the knowledge about Marcion and the Gnostics was only known
through the heresiologists. (Gonzales 1984, 70) Heresiologists Christian writers that argued against
Gnosticism and its tenets. In 1945 a large collection of Gnostic writings were discovered in Egypt;
they included the Gospel of Thomas and the Gospel of Truth of Valentinus, a leading Gnostic teacher.

He believed that Jesus was who He said He was and everything that we know in the Bible about Jesus
was fact. These faith systems that were teaching things contrary to what was known in the scriptures
were false and needed to be exposed for what they were. The belief that these other religions were
going to have a negative impact on the church at large likely caused Irenaeus to expose the differences
to protect the scriptures that he held dear. Gnostics and Marcionites had many similar beliefs, but the
Gnostics believed that their secret knowledge (knowledge that was only available to select persons)
was what provided them with salvation and left others who did not have this knowledge to themselves
and their evil ways which will lead them to the eternal destruction. This knowledge was the source
that assisted them in escaping from the prison of the body. Without the knowledge they would not be

ABSTRACT
Wireless communications is, by any measure, the fastest growing segment of the communications
industry. It has captured the attention of the media and the imagination of the public. However, the
fundamental phenomenon which makes transmission unreliable is time varying fading. The
phenomenon is described as the constructive/destructive interference between signals arriving at the
same antenna via different paths, and hence with different delays and phases, resulting in random
fluctuations of the signal level at the receiver. This paper investigates Rake receiver method of
combating fading.
The rake receiver uses a combination of correlators to separately detect M strongest multipath
components, code generators, and delays, or fingers , to spread out the individual echo signals of the
multipath. Each signal is then delayed according to peaks found in the received signal. The rake
receiver uses several sub receivers each delayed slightly in order to tune in to the individual multipath
components. Each component is decoded independently, but at a later stage combined using delay
compensate combiner and MRC dispreading in order to make the most use of the different
transmission characteristics of each

Chromatography Lab Used to Examine Spinach and Red Cabbage
Chromatography Lab
In this chromatography lab filter paper was used to examine the different pigments of spinach and red
cabbage. There were two hypotheses for both plants. The hypothesis for the red cabbage was that there
would be multiple pigments evident. The hypothesis for the spinach was similar in that there would be
different pigments present. Both hypotheses were accepted in that there were multiple pigments found
on the filter paper of each sample. Major scientific concepts in this lab include chromatography and
pigments. Chromatography is the division of mixtures, solution, and others into its different
components. Chromatography is often used to separate a solution into its separate parts.
Chromatography filters complicated compounds accurately without involving a difficult process so it
is often used. In this lab, we used chromatography to separate the different pigments in the plants.
When looking at plants, the colors of the plants are the colors that are reflected from the different
wavelengths of the light spectrum. The colors that are not evident are the colors the plants absorb and
use as energy. Pigments are the compounds of a plant the enable the reflected colors to be evident.
These pigments function to capture light energy from the sun to enable the plants to undergo
photosynthesis.

Dante And The Nature Of Sin
Dante and the Nature of Sin
Often, we cannot see the good until we have experienced the bad. Dante Alighieri, a poet who makes
himself the main character in his Divine Comedy, finds himself lost in a dark wood at the start of The
Inferno. Though he sees a safe path out of the wood towards an alluring light, he is forced to take an
alternate route through an even darker place. As the ending of the pilgrim Dante s voyage is bright and
hopeful, Alighieri the poet aims to encourage even the most sinful Christians to hope for a successful
end. Thus, Dante the pilgrim goes to hell in The Inferno to better understand the nature of sin and its
consequences in order to move closer to salvation; his journey an allegory representing that of the
repenting Christian soul. Before Virgil arrives to guide Dante on his journey, Dante shares that he
doesn t recall how he lost his way. He tells How I entered [the dark wood] I cannot truly say, I had
become so sleepy at the moment when I first strayed, leaving the path of truth (Inferno I.10 12).
Because he strayed from the holy path, Dante finds himself lost and trying to find his way back on the
right track. Dante s ultimate goal is to to free himself from the dark wood of confusion and chaos.
Looking up from the wood, Dante sees the hilltop shawled in morning rays of light sent from the
planet that leads men straight ahead on every road (Inferno I.16 18). Dante begins to move towards the
light, but is blocked from passing by three

The Gay Rights Movement Essay
Thesis Statement: The Gay Rights Movement dates back to the 19th century. By 1970 gay and lesbian
organizations existed all over the United States and in other countries all over the world. Some
supporters of the movement would say that our society as a whole has made great strides towards
acceptance of homosexuality. However, gays and lesbians are still fighting for equality in 2009. The
issues are vast and widespread, with same sex marriage at the top of the list. In the world that we live
in today one might be surprised to learn how many countries are accepting of gay and lesbians, as well
as how many are not. The world has made progress within the last decade regarding this issue, but
definitely not enough. We need to take steps ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Following the ruling more than 18,000 couples married. Prior to the November 4, 2008 election, a
ballot called Proposition 8 was proposed for general election. It called for a ban of same sex
marriages. It passed on November 4, 2008 leaving those previously married couples uncertain of their
marital status. There were numerous demonstrations throughout the nation. Several lawsuits were also
filed. Oral arguments were heard on March 5, 2009 and a decision is expected within ninety days (
California Proposition 8 ). As we await the decision, many individuals are speaking out. If the court
rules that only existing marriages of same sex couples are valid, it will be a hollow victory, because
we do not want to be the only ones on the Freedom Train. The California Supreme Court needs to
overturn Proposition 8 because what Prop. 8 does for the first time in American history is to take out
of a constitution a group that has been declared equal by the supreme court (Tyler). LBGT supporters
feel the victory must overturn the November 4 ruling as it speaks to a fundamental civil right within
our constitution. Same sex marriage is a controversial and very serious legal issue that needs to be
resolved. I disagree with the individual state rulings. The laws honoring and protecting heterosexual
married couples remains the same in 50 states.

Three Approaches Of Pragmatics
According to Schmitt (2010), there are two approaches of pragmatics, a cognitive or psychological
approach which is exploring the relation between linguistic meaning of utterances, the
decontextualized, what speakers mean by their utterances on a particular situation and how hearer
interpret those utterances on those particular situations. Cognitive approach was developed by
philosophers Austin, Searle, and Grice. On the other hand, social pragmatics approach which focuses
on the communicative exchanges between individuals in social, cultural and other contextual factors.
Brown and Levinson (1978 1987) introduced face model of politeness to this approach.
The main objective of pragmatics is to study on how non native speakers comprehend and produce
speech acts in a target language. Speech act is not the whole of pragmatics, but is perhaps currently the
most important part of the subject. Many of the topics addressed in both narrow and broad views
derive from three major pragmatic theories: Speech Acts, Conversational Implicatures, ... Show more

In other words, indirectness is a widely used conversational strategy, hence people reduce the
unpleasant message contained in requests and other statement. In indirect speech acts the speaker
communicates to the hearer more than he actually says by way of depending on their mutually shared
background information either both linguistic and nonlinguistic together with the powers of rationality
and inference on the part of the hearer. To be more specific, to explain the indirect speech acts can be
say it is a theory of speech acts certain general principles of cooperative conversation (Searle, 1979, p.
31 32). As Thomas (1995) people use indirect strategies whenever they want to reach aims from their
hearers, when speakers want to increase the force of the message communicated, or when want to
make their speech more

Recruitment Methods
The purpose of this memorandum is to guide the company on how to conduct an efficient and
effective recruitment and selection process when hiring senior level employees. Below I have
provided a few of the top options that the organization can easily put in place for the use of recruiting
and selection new senior level staff.
Recruitment Methods Recruiting qualified candidates that are able to adequately handle and manage
senior level positions of the organization takes a great deal of time and patience. Placing individuals
who are not sufficiently knowledgeable at a senior level could cause an organization a great deal of
damage and money. It s therefore advisable for every organization to apply some of these methods.
There are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There might be employees working as junior staffs but they have the required qualifications thus when
an opportunity arises they are given the priority.
Selection Methods Selecting suitable candidates for senior level positions of the organization is also
an essential undertaking. There are several considerations an organization must take into an account
about a candidate before hiring them.
1. Credentials Assessment. It is very important to know what experience and skillset a candidate
brings with them when joining an organization. Individuals with higher degrees, received from
premier colleges demonstrate commitment through their qualifications. (McDonald, 2012)
2. Position Matching. Another vital component to the selection process is matching the right
individual to the position. For example, a senior level staff member in charge of the organization s
finances must have experience and knowledge relating to the management of how a company s
finances are handled. If the candidate s experience and skills do not match the position being filled,
then obviously, this candidate is not the right match. Hiring a candidate with only some of the skills
needed for that specific position could put the organization in a very compromising position.
(McDonald, 2012)
3. Personal Characteristics. Another imperative element when selecting senior staff is their personal
characteristics in relation to their leadership

What grade would you give Ms. Nooyi for her job performance as a strategic leader? What are her
strengths and weaknesses? Where would you place Ms. Nooyi on the Level 5 pyramid of strategic
leadership and why? I would give Ms. Mooyi a B. The CEO of Pepsico is well informed about the
company s resources and how they are being affected by the external environment. The decisions that
she she made to restructure and diversify the company have definitely positively impacted how the
company is being perceived. Those decisions also provided various opportunities within the food

Support A strategic leader should definitely analyze what affects competitive advantage and how
exactly the company is underperforming. One of the recommendations would be scenario planning. It
would be beneficial to analyze various cases where different product categories can be changed and to
see how will the certain change affect the financial performance of the company. The second
recommendation would be to synthesize all available input from all possible sources internal and
external and create a strategic vision that will help the company see where they need to make changes
and how those changes will help the growth of the financial. Another recommendation would be to
provide customers the service that other competitors do not provide be it either discounts or other
ways of promotions. This will help differentiate PepsiCo from its competitors. Do you agree with
Indra Nooyi s philosophy that performance and purpose are intimately linked and you can t do one
without the other ? Support I agree with this statement because I think that purpose is what provides
motivation for the better level of performance. Human sustainability, environmental sustainability and
the whole person at work being the three main dimensions of the philosophy appeal to a wide range of
people. This helps to attract people who care about the environment and the product and living the life

Obesity And The United State Of America
Obesity in United State of America. One can imagine how obesity is taking over the world s
population, so rapidly and it is obvious that the United States of America has high rates of Obesity.
Obesity, also known as overweight, is a serious epidemic disease that can cause harm to the systems of
the body including the heart. Obesity is the biggest threat to the United State of America s population
and something urgent has to be done, otherwise our future generation is at stake. the parent of U.S
kids should be aware that obesity is affecting health, has national consequences, and lead to
depression in the victims. If something is not done fast to alter this misfortune, there is a high
percentage that our future generation is at stake. Moreover, Obesity is a vital root of many life
threatening diseases, like diabetes type 2, high blood pressure and even strokes. Most people who are
obese are often associated with type 2 diabetes because obesity can cause resistance to insulin that
produces the hormone to regulate sugar in the blood. Malnutrition motivates obesity whereby
producing a lot of cholesterol, which closes up the bloodstream in the body, causing high blood

1A. Banalization is the trivialization of events so as to lessen their significance the question of power
in the telling of a narrative, in which the point of view is the story being told. Versioning is a stand on
the way the world works, the idea that nothing came from nothing, in which everything is a version of
something else. Counter narrative identifies as a positional category, in which material is reread in a

To say that African descended populations and cultures have been erased is not an unreasonable
statement because the moment Africans were enslaved and taken from their home country they were
taught a false history, in which their past was not filled with kingship but with destitution. For
example, in Marcus D. Jones excerpt Africa in Mexico, Jones states, Moreover, like the people of
Coyolillo, the majority of the inhabitants of the coastal communities south of the City of Veracruz
have even forgotten or perhaps were never taught the country s colonial past, when enslaved Africans
were brought directly from Africa to Mexico (Jones). Thus, many Mexican people don t realize that
they are in fact from African decent. If the people of Mexico were taught of their past it would answer
various question regarding the ancestors of not only Spanish, Asian, and Indigenous but also African.
Ultimately, under colonial rule, Mexican society was divided into a system of social classes where

Football As Sport Of Masses
Football is the most popular sports in the world. The game was born in England with the formation of
the Football Association, and the same rules still apply since 1863. The word soccer was derived from
Association . the first game ever played under the Association rules was between Richmond and
Barnes and the final score was 0 0. FIFA is the association that states the rules. FIFA stands for
Fédération Internationale de Football Association). Rules Football as sport of masses According to a
study conducted by FIFA in 2006, 2 270 million people worldwide are actively involved in football,
including players, referees and directors. Of these, 265 million people play the sport. This represents
about 4% of world population. This numbers make Football one of the most popular sports in the
world. Why did I choose this topic. Football is made of passion and it gathers masses of people. The
introduction of technologies in sports will help to reduce the human error and eradicate those errors.
Goal line technology determines when the ball has crossed the line. Cases In 1966 England played
East Germany in the final of the world cup. The Game was tied in Wembley 2 2 and with eleven
minutes of extra time Geoff Hurst swivelled and shot from close range. The ball hit the underside of
the cross bar and bounced down, apparently on or just over the line and was cleared. After the ball hit
the underside of the crossbar and bounced down over the line those referees had no

Why Do People Use Anabolic Steroids
Steroids often referred to as roids, or juice are the same as, or similar to hormones in the body. The
body makes steroids naturally to support such functions as fighting stress and promoting growth and
development. But some people use steroid pills, creams, gels, or injections because they think steroids
will improve their sports performance or the way they look. Anabolic steroids are commonly used
among teenage athletes to bulk up. Unfortunately, the improper use of steroids (even at a young age)
causes stunted growth, kidney impairment or failure, liver damage, and an increased risk of heart
attack or stroke. Also, AAs (Anabolic androgenic steroid) use has seen a slight increase in the past few
years. Furthermore, steroids are addicting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is impossible for researchers to design studies that would accurately test the effects of large doses of
steroids on athletes, because giving participants such high doses would be unethical (performance
enhancing drugs: know the risks, pg. 2). This further supports that athletes misuse steroids, not only
because they are illegal and prohibited, but because they are taking doses higher than prescribed. By
taking higher doses there is no way to really know the negative effects that may come with it, because
very high doses of steroids has not been very well studied. In addition, the Mayo Clinic states, Taking
anabolic androgenic steroids to enhance athletic performance, besides being prohibited by most sports
organizations, it s illegal. In the past 70 years, more effective law enforcement in the United States has
pushed much of the illegal steroid industry into the black market. This poses additional health risks
because the drugs are either made in another countries and smuggled into the U.S. or they are made in
clandestine labs in the U.S. (performance enhancing drugs: know the risks, pg. 3). The reader can see
from the information above that steroids are illegal and prohibited for the use of athletes. It also helps
the reader see just how dangerous these drugs are because law enforcement has pushed the steroid
industry into the black market where they do not have to meet government

Abstract Psychology is the study of the human mind, including its functions and how it can affect one
s behavior. Many sources of media attempt to portray different principles of psychology by working
them into entertainment, such as movies. Rain Man is one famous example that successfully depicts
important psychological concepts and is actually based off of a real person, Kim Peek. During the
beginning of the movie, Charlie Babbit discovers that his father has passed and has neglected to leave
him his 3 million dollar inheritance. Instead, the fortune has been left to another man, his long lost

Students Should Be Taught In School
The things being taught in school are not always what need to be taught in order for the student to
succeed in life. The long math problems and odd questions and classes taken do not always help us
figure out the more important things people need to learn. Taxes and the classes that students would
most likely use in the career they wish to pursue are not always the classes taken or things taught in
school. Teachers should not always assign the most difficult or most outrageous problems in order to
teach us problem solving skill but teach us things we will actually use in everyday life. Students
should be taught the basic skills, that students still do not know how to do, that will be used
throughout their entire life. Taxes and learning

Essay on Flowers For Algernon by Daniel Keyes
Society has become a shallow place. If an individual does not fit into societies form of the normal
person then they are treated differently. But does society treat those who are different in a negative or
positive way? In the novel Flowers for Algernon, the author Daniel Keyes shows an in depth look at
the treatment of individuals in today s society. Firstly society tends to discriminate against those
whose IQ does not fit into the norms of our society. The physically handicapped in today s world are
not considered to be equal as those who fit into the normal physical appearance, Keyes portrays this
through Charlie s thoughts while in the café. Although animals are not technically humans society
treats them in ways which no human would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the population then they will be scrutinized and shunned from the others. People are not willing to

Charlie discovers the fault in Dr. Nemur s experiment and confronts him about it, Dr. Nemur treats

brilliant politician and a military genius, Caesar also had his way with women. He had a few affairs
with some very beautiful and interesting women, with whom he used for political gains as well as
being lovers with. With his charismatic leadership and ambition, Caesar s rise to power came rather
quickly, and he ultimately became the dictator of the Roman Empire. Caesar is a very interesting man
to study about and his accomplishments are still referenced till this day. He caught the attention of
Shakespeare and Shaw, their plays may be exaggerated for a more dramatic effect from the events that
probably occurred, but regardless, most people have heard of Julius Caesar and know he was a man of
great accomplishments. Julius Caesar was born into a patrician family in a republic, on Quincitilis,
which would later be replaced by Julius in the Julian calendar in honor of Caesar during his reign.
Eventually evolving into what we now know as July. Despite his great reputation, everything did not
exactly go as he planned. Nearly twenty years old he narrowly 333avoided being executed for
opposing the military dictator Sulla, for not divorcing his first wife Cornelia, due to them being in
rival families to the throne.1 He was also captured and held for ransom by pirates, in which he
mocked the pirates saying I am going to come back and execute you all , the pirates all laughed, so did

The Obesity Epidemic Of Obesity Essay
Introduction
Obesity is becoming an outrageous and alarming health issue in today s society. Children are rapidly
getting engulfed by this pandemic every day. According to the book Public Health 101: Health People
Healthy Populations, pandemic can be defined as, An epidemic occurring worldwide, or over a very
wide area, crossing international boundaries and affecting a large number of people (Riegelman,
Kirkwood, 2015). The World Health Organization estimates that 43 million children worldwide are
overweight or obese, with the United States leading the numbers (WHO, 2016). About one in three
children and teenagers in America are obese. Obesity can lead to a variety of other serious health
issues, such as diabetes, heart disease, asthma, high blood pressure, and other health risks. Finding
effective interventions and programs to reverse obesity rates is essential. Obesity is one hundred
percent preventable and treatable.
Intervention Strategy 1: Obesity Prevention Programs
Childhood obesity is continuing to grow at a rapid and dangerous pace. It is vital for the population to
be educated on practicing a healthy life style to prevent obesity. A study done by C. Nathan Marti, Eric
Stice, and Heather Shaw (2006) evaluates the effectiveness of childhood prevention programs in a
variety of different settings. The study was funded by the US Agency for Healthcare Research and
Quality (AHRQ) and the National Institutes of Health. There have been a variety of childhood obesity

How Does Golding Use Conflict In Lord Of The Flies
In the book in the Lord of the Flies, the boys try to make the best of the situation but it ends in a
disaster. The boys were on a plane during World War Two and a fighter jet shot them down and then
they crashed onto an island. Then they lose their connection with civilization, become crazy and
started killing each other. The writing strategy used throughout the story is conflict and this means
struggles. William Golding uses conflict to show the central idea, don t judge a book by its cover.
The main idea is how boys are very mean to Piggy because of how he looks. When Ralph asked Jack
to keep the fire going Jack did not keep the fire going like he was asked to. Jack went out to go
hunting instead. Then Ralph and Piggy came up to check on them and Ralph was mad. They had a
meeting and Piggy wanted to talk to give his opinion but no one would listen to him because of his
appearance. This relates to conflict because Jack did not do what Raph asked him to do and it started a
fight between Ralph and Jack. This also relates to don t judge a book by it s cover because the boys do

Business, Sustainability And The Natural Environment
Business, Sustainability and the Natural Environment, Daniel Katz During the past 25 years,
awareness of the environment has increased tremendously. Non profit organizations look beyond
institutional goals, and instead, try to find a shared vision that works for everyone in the society. Our
society needs to stop consuming as if we have an infinite planet; we have to have integrity for the
world we live in because the natural resources that have been sustaining us will not last forever.
Companies need to evolve with the modern age and changing consumer market. For example, Netflix
never thought they would produce their own shows, however, with the changing consumer market,
they have done just that. Also, NGO s sometimes have to partner with bigger for profit companies in
order to target a larger consumer base, thus, solidifying the fact that the for profit and non profit sector
have to team together in order to sustain the environment in which we inhabit. Business, Sustainability
and Poverty, Jacqueline Novogratz This plenary begins by stating that a financial crisis occurs when
people in the markets do not trust each other. Trust is what makes a society fair. Corruption flourishes
upon weaknesses in economic, political, and social institutions, and this diverts economic growth by
eroding the quality of public goods. In this age, income equality has increased across countries due to
globalization and technology; however, income inequality within countries has increased as

Finding Nemo Adaptations
If you have ever seen Finding Nemo you might remember when Marlin and Dory venture into the
deep sea in their search for an address on a pair of goggles. As they dive into the deep they are
entranced by a bright light in the darkness. Unfortunately, though, this light was attached to a hungry
angler fish. Like most deep sea creatures the angler fish looks scary and strange, especially when
compared to the animals that we are used to. Deep sea creatures may seem odd, but their appearances
are there for a reason. The way these creatures look, along with other adaptations help them to live in
their extreme underwater environments.
An example of an unusual adaptation is found in zombie worms. These strange animals live off of the
coast of California ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First off, are the squid s ginormous eyes which are so big that they are the largest eyes of any animal
on the earth, as big as 30 centimeters across (1). That is about 3 times the diameter of an average sized
dinner plate. These huge eyes give the squid the ability to absorb more light so that they can see in the
deep, dark ocean (1). It is exactly like how human s pupils expand in the dark. On the same topic of
sight, the coloring of giant squids change from the ocean s surface to the deep sea (1). At the surface,
squid appear pink or reddish orange, but in the deep water they look silvery or gold (1). This change in
coloring no doubt is an adaptation to deep sea life, probably for concealment purposes. One of the
squid s more unique body parts is their funnel; this is located underneath the squid s body and propels
the squid by pumping water, obviously a remarkable adaptation for underwater life (1). The giant
squid also has several body parts that help the squid feed. These are as following: feeding tentacles
that capture the food, arms that guide the food from the tentacle to the beak, and the beak that slices
the food into smaller pieces that the squid can consume (1). Giant squids are full of remarkable

Bob Marley and Reggae Essay
Bob Marley and Reggae
Bob Marley was a Jamaican singer, guitarist and songwriter who achieved international stardom.
What are the origins of Reggae?
The origins of Reggae start with African music as the people of Jamaica are descendants of the
African slaves who were brought to the island. African music is based around rhythm patterns, and
rhythm and beat are the most important features of Reggae. Also there is the influence of other
Caribbean music such as Calypso and the associated instruments such as steel drums which can be
heard on Bob Marley songs such as One Love.

blues, Jamaican folk rhythm, and dub were synthesized into the rock steady and poppa top styles, and
Marley emerged as a rising talent in this new genre of Jamaican music.
How was Bob Marley Associated with religion and black politics?
In 1967 he converted from Christianity to Rastafarianism, a religion that has had a profound influence
on reggae music. The Rastafarian movement of this period, among other beliefs, recognized Haile
Selassie I, king of Ethiopia, as the living God; praised the spiritual effects of marijuana; and endorsed
black racial superiority. Influenced by the Rastafarian movement, Marley s music contains elements of
spiritualism and mysticism. Some songs call for personal freedom through revolution, while others
embrace carefree attitudes toward life or convey stories of love. Marley and the Wailers recorded
Catch a Fire (1972), Burnin (1973), Natty Dread (1975), and Live (1975), among other albums.
During the 1970s, amid great political and economic turmoil in Jamaica, Marley cultivated a rebel
image. An increasingly political figure, he survived a 1976 assassination attempt at his home in
Jamaica. He subsequently went to Europe and experienced a new

The Case Ban On Tobacco Ads And Talks About The Conflict...
This essay is a case study analysis that uses the case Ban on Tobacco Ads and talks about the conflict
of interests between tobacco producers and the Government of India. In Feb 2001 the Government of
India published the news on tabling a bill that bans Tobacco companies on advertising cigarettes and
sponsoring the sports and other cultural events.
(1) There are several arguments that support the Government s decision:
1. Protection of people s health. As World Health Organization states that the 3 million deaths in 1990
occurred as a result of smoking and in 1998 it raised to 4.023 million.
2. Preventing the children aged 14 24 years from being smokers. According to internal document from
R J Reynolds (1998) the bright advertising of the cigarettes that had a camel s picture on the packing
was attractive to children and stimulated teenage smoking.
3. Contributions of cigarettes to the budget of India is 0.14% versus the health costs which account for
0.21%.
4. Provision of employment by the tobacco industry is an illusion because those who will not be
employed in the tobacco field will be employed somewhere else and will be more labor intensive.
5. Complete bans on the tobacco products give a better decrease in tobacco consumption. This is
evident in the investigation of UK s Department of Health (1992) which found out that the banning of
advertising resulted in fall of smoking.
(2) Opposed to the Government there are several arguments from Tobacco companies that

Health As Being Mentally And Physically Content With One...
There are those who want to become a doctor to keep others healthy and those who want to become a
counsellor to also, keep others healthy. This shows that trying to simplify the term health into one
universal definition could be a difficult task. Physical health that can be tested through x rays and
blood tests, issues such as mental and social health however cannot be tested. A person who is
suffering from depression and a person who has a fever should hold the same level of importance to a
doctor, parent and society. Health just like people can come in all different shapes and sizes. Health
for everyone is not the same. This is shown in different teachings of different disciplines as well. The
author defines health as being mentally and physically content with one s self. Philosophy is a study of
problems, which are ultimate, abstract and very general. These problems are concerned with the nature
of existence, knowledge, morality, reason and human purpose (Teichmann Evans, 1999, p.1). Famous
philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle and Karl Marx all shared one common goal, which was to find
the truth in certain human pneumonias. Philosophy is all about the truth of things. The philosophical
understanding of public health consist of controversial ethical, political and social issues, including
those related to vaccinations, the threat of pandemics and possible restrictions to individual liberties,

Essay On Canada s Transportation System
Canada s Transportation System.
Transportation is the movement of people, animals and goods from one location to another.
Transportation is the system of road transportation, rail transportation, marine transportation and air
transportation.
Transportation always played an important role in the history of Canada because of building the
railway system many provinces such as British Columbia and Prince Edward Island agreed to join
Confederation. The first Canada s railway line was built in 1836 and the first railway system was
completed and opened in 1885. November 8, 1885, the first rail train traveled across Canada from sea
to sea. There were the first steps of transportation s history of Canada.
Transportation is an essential component of the Canadian economy. The transportation s system makes
possible to Canada to trade and develop local and international businesses. Canadians like to think of
themselves as residents of an autonomous nation, but increasingly, local and national politics are
dictated by the global shipping network. Without foreign buyers of raw materials like softwood and
oil, Canada would be a much poorer place. Shelves would go bare and the economy ... Show more

Family Dynamics In The Metamorphosis
The Perils of Family Dynamics as it relates to The Metamorphosis
Pam (Lawson) Beaver
Belhaven University
Family Dynamics The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka represents the selfish views of family. Kafka
transforms Gregory, the son, into a dung beetle to show how members of the family evolve and adjust
due to life changing events. Traditionally, when families overcome hardships, a stronger bond is
formed between the members of the familial unit. In this story, Kafka takes the family on a journey of
life, one day wonderful and the next full of strife. Kafka s view as portrayed in The Metamorphosis is
that family, when faced with difficult change, sometimes transforms from a harmonious unit into its
selfish individual components. The first narcissistic is the parents and the expectation of Gregory to
provide. The first indication of self centeredness is the parents expectation that their son should
provide for the household. When his mother arrives at his bedroom door to remind him he has to go to
work, Gregory tried to get out of bed, realizing something has happened to him. Others in the home
become alarmed that he is not rising as expected, so first his father comes to check on him, then his
sister, who whispers Gregory, open the door, please (Kafka, 2006, p.1968). Kafka reveals the family
dynamics throughout the story and how each individual fits into the entity. Gregory s sister, in the
beginning, is concerned for his well being. However, she relies on him for her everyday needs, so her
self indulgent motives become clear. The mother, on the other hand, is bossy and distant. The father is
overbearing, depressed, and dependent on his son financially. The main concern of the familial body is
getting Gregory out the door and to work so that he can make a paycheck and the individuals can
continue in the roles each has absorbed. The second selfish observance is the way the family reacts
when Gregory becomes a burden, creating more work for them around the house. Even the hired maid
asks on bended knee to be discharged immediately (Kafka, 2006, p. 1979). Kafka is quick to change
the dynamics of the household designating chores and cooking to the mother and daughter, and
assigning the

The Negative Impact Of Technology s Impact On Society
Technology s Impact on Society
In 2002, during an interview with Wired Magazine Steven Spielberg said, Technology can be our best
friend, and technology can also be the biggest party pooper of our lives. It interrupts our own story,
interrupts our ability to have a thought or a daydream, to imagine something wonderful, because we re
too busy bridging the walk from the cafeteria back to the office on the cell phone (Kennedy, para. 7).
In the twentieth first century, we all have a certain kind of technology that makes our life easier in
many ways from the most basic to the most complex, such as lighting, cell phones, internet, cars, etc.
When we think about technology, it suddenly reminds us of entertainment, but it provides more than
entertainment, it provides us with everything. It is unthinkable that nowadays we can live without
technology and yet, it influences us both positively and negatively.
However, have people ever thought about how technology changes and affects us? According to All
Africa in Negative Effect of Technology on Society, due to the improvement of technology, it has
more control over our daily life because we revolve around it. Even though society is able to adapt to
the technology s advancement, it only looks for the benefits of its uses and is not aware of technology
s setbacks (All Africa, para. 1). The analogous of the pros and cons of technology s usages has been
discussed over the years, but just as Spielberg says, technology is great as long

The Impact Of Burlesque And Vaudeville On Stand-Up Comedy
The Impact of Burlesque and Vaudeville on Stand up Comedy
The struggle of the funny performer has remained a symbiosis of drive, jealousy, heartbreak, and
triumph existing then as it exists now. Perhaps the only other constant is comedy s unfailing popularity
K. Nesterkoff, 2016 Richard Pryor, arguably one of the greatest stand up comedians of all time, credits
his comedic abilities to many comedians, one being Charlie Chaplin. You may be thinking, how does
Charlie Chaplin, the guy who played The Tramp in silent black and white movies, influence a stand up
comedian like Richard Pryor? Well, you may be surprised to know that all American stand up
comedians are heavily impacted by the performances in the late nineteenth century. During the late
1800 s, vaudeville and burlesque dominated performance venues across the country and developed a
new art form that had never been seen before. Although stand up is one of the only true American art
forms, we cannot forget to credit vaudeville and burlesque performers who paved the way for the rise
of stand up comedy. Believe it or not, nineteenth century burlesque and vaudeville play a major role in
the evolution of what stand up comedy is today. After all, how can we respect the art form of stand up
comedy today without fully understanding how it all began?

An Example Of A Private Sector Business
Business Organisations Task 1
A private sector business is a business that is part of the economy that is not state controlled. It is run
by individuals and companies who are mainly for profit. These businesses are not owned or operated
by government. An example of a private sector business would be ASDA. Asda Stores limited is an
American owned, British founded supermarket retailer. The company has been a subsidiary of the
American retail company Wal Mart since July 1999, and is now the second largest supermarket chain
by market share (Corporate Watch 1996 2014). The company provides normal goods for the public.
They offer service to the public and strive for excellence business. I chose this example because
ASDA is a large company that is aiming for profit and it is a private sector business.
A public sector business is a business that usually composed of organisations that are owned and
operated by the government (PrivacySense2015).
The primary difference between public and private sector businesses is who they for. Public sector
employees are who those work for government. An example of public sector would be public schools.
The purpose of schools is that they provide education for the young people and public schools are
funded by government to offer education to students. I chose public schools business they are from
public sector and because they use government funding to offer education to the children. Public

Cesare believed that punishment was an effective deterrent to crime, as the offender is rational and in
control of their actions and behaviors. Cesare expressed that the punishment should fit the crime and
that adjudication and punishment should be both swift and certain . He advocated for due process on

torturous punishment towards self incrimination implies guilt prior to a guilty verdict by a judicial

Fingerprints are characterised by their individual detailing and patterns. They are formed and

fingerprints are just that, they are found and only part of the fingerprint is present. 1.1.4 Fingerprints
found at crime scenes 1.1.4.1 Identification
When a fingerprint is found a crime scene, it needs to be recovered in order for it to be matched and
identified as belonging to a specific person. However having just one fingerprint from a crime scene is
not enough to match it to one person, there needs to be a fingerprint to compare it to. There will need
to be the fingerprint recovered from the crime scene and a reference fingerprint, usually taken from a
suspect. They will then be compared to one another, during this comparison fingerprints are examined
for three levels of details. Level one detailing is the pattern (loop, whorl, arch), the pattern itself
cannot be used to match the fingerprints, though it can be used to exclude a specific person of interest
if the patterns are not the same. The second level of detailing looked for is the minutiae detailing and

School Clothes Essay
School Clothes
I strongly believe that children should come with an instruction manual in different languages, after
all, even the most complicated computer system or VCR has a manual in three to four languages, or
more. Granted, sometimes we can t understand the instructions, but we have them and sometimes even
a toll free help line. Now some people would say their own parent would be the help line but not
always does that work out. Our own parents advice can be, shall I say, out dated; for example, many
would suggest to us new parents to tell our child, what we say goes, or stop that crying or I ll give you
something to cry about, or do it because I m the parent and I said so, not the desired tone for positive
interaction ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Frankly, the whole exchange of dialogue is exhausting and I have given in more times than I d like to.
I m sure that the lack of a Parenting Manual is not the reason for school uniform codes, but in my
household uniforms certainly would make mornings easier. School uniforms have a multitude of
rewards and benefits for both the parent and child and should be implemented in all elementary
schools. The rewards and benefits far outweigh any negative connotations that opposing adults have.
These benefits include: reduced headache and stress in the morning, reduced expense of clothing,
increased focus on academics in the classroom, increased building of team spirit among classmates,
and the, for lack of a better word, non discrimination on the popularity poll. I ll begin with exploring
the morning ritual and the reward a uniform has on this process. Critics opposed to uniforms would
say the solution to the miserable morning is to lay the clothes out at night, hence avoiding such
conflicts. This idea sounds good at the outset; however, it just creates conflicts at bedtime so I haven t
seen the advantages or solution to this nighttime ritual. On the other hand, the uniform idea poses
some great alternatives; first the choices are limited, usually to a few shirts, sweaters, or sweatshirts,
and one or two pairs of pants or shorts, and

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Investment Bonds
In finance, bonds are an instrument of liability. The bond issuer owes the debt to the bond holders and
the holders owes the term of the bonds and can claim the principal once the maturity date reached.
Coupon can be paid at regular intervals such as semi annual, annual or monthly. Besides that, the bond
usually is negotiable which means that in secondary market, ownership of the instrument can be
transfer to other people. In the secondary market, bonds are highly liquid. This is because the transfer
agents have medallion stamp the bonds at the bank.
Therefore, a bonds is a form of loan or IOU (I Owe You). The lender (creditor) is the holder of bonds,
the borrower is the issuer of the bond and interest is the coupon. The borrower with external funds
supply bonds for long term ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a creditor (lender), between bondholder and stockholder, bondholder have the priority to receive
the rendered in advance of stockholders but they have secure creditor when the company is facing
bankruptcy. The significant difference between bonds and stock is bonds normally have a defined
term, will redeemed after maturity date, however stocks can last long for many year until the company
have opposed to liquidation.
There are some pros and cons of taking bonds as an investment instrument. The disadvantages of
investing bonds are interest rate risk. For example, fixed rate bond are taking risk when the general
common interest rate increase and their market prices will fall. Decrease in market price of the bond
will bring an increase in the rate of return received from investing bond because the payment are
fixed. This situation will reflect the ability of investor to obtain a higher interest rate on their
investment. Furthermore, bonds have different of risk and only particular risk will affect certain
investor. Bondholders will influenced by price change in bond especially for financial institutional
such as mutual

The Disney King
Being that a live action version of The Lion King is soon to come, it would be inappropriate to not
take a look back at Disney classic. The movie discussed topics that many children had never learned;
which helped change the perspective of Disney forever. Along with a new perspective, the film brings
a flavor that is definitely new to Disney movies. Before someone watches the upcoming live action
film, they must first fall in love, if they already haven t, with the original movie. The Lion King is
incomparable to all ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Though many reviewers like to focus on the comic relief characters of the movie: Timon, Pumbaa, and
Zazu, the characters that truly drove the movie were Simba and his conniving uncle, Scar. In one
journal done by KINEMA a journal for film and audiovisual media, the writer describes how ... the
physical portrayal of the two characters themselves already reveal their inner qualities (KINEMA).
Simba, at least as a child, is seen around vibrant colors, and the character himself is always energetic.
Scar on the other hand, is always seen with poor posture and grim lighting (KINEMA). The way these
two contrast throughout the movie, and then collide with their colors in the final fight scene of the
movie, really ties the film together in a way that no other characters could.
One thing that was colossally critiqued was Mufasa s gruesome death in the climax of the movie. In
one online article written by Matt Roth titled, A short history of Disney fascism, Roth passionately
writes Disney s recent cash cow, THE LION KING, is no exception, imperiling its characters with all
manner of blood splattered mayhem and terrorizing impressionable youngsters... (15 20). Disney
however, seemed completely unphased when it came to the criticism. In paragraph six of a scholarly
journal done by Annalee R. Ward, she wrote that

Peacekeeping Of The United Nations Essay
Countless generations have idealized the thought of being able to live in a society without war. With
this ultimate goal many different ways of maintaining peace have been proposed or attempted. This is
known as peacekeeping . Peacekeeping attempts have been happening throughout history.
Peacekeeping is defined as the maintenance of international peace and security by the deployment of
military forces in a particular area ( Spagnol). This means the cooperation of different nation states to
complete missions or activities that will end in the result of lasting peace. The main contributor to
international peacekeeping is the United Nations. The United nations is an international organization
where the missions and work is guided by the proposing and principles contained in the founding
charter ( United Nations website). Despite the substantial amount of peacekeeping the united nations
does there are outside forces such an non governmental organizations also known as NGOS that are
peacekeeping forces as well. In retrospect peacekeeping is a very complex concept and throughout
history has had many successes but also an overwhelming amount of failures. These failures have
causes high amounts of criticism, and have led many people to believe that peacekeeping in general
has been a failure. Despite the failures of peacekeeping some countries have been more involved than
others. one of the largest contributors to peacekeeping is Canada and has made peacekeeping a

Argumentative Essay On Tax Reform
A country s tax code is the government document which details the rules and methods by which
citizens of a state must give a portion of their salary to their state s government. The United States tax
code is currently 74,608 pages long with over 2 million words. The main source of tax related
problems is the fact that the tax code itself is so complicated that is is no longer efficient. The Tax
Foundation predicts that Americans will spend nearly 9 billion hours filing their taxes this year. This
should be cause for alarm such a complicated tax code is impossible to work with and destined to only
get worse, and the call for a complete reform is now greater than ever. Unfortunately, attempted tax
reform proposals from the last 30 years have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
has yet to come to consensus on how to reform its tax code is thanks to the contrasting ideas of
Congress the extreme split amongst Republican and Democratic parties in regards to tax reform is
what keeps proposals from getting passed. Congress instead tends to favor the smaller proposals that
satisfy both sides but in the end, do little to improve the current situation. In the midst of a divided
Congress the American people do what they can to have their voices heard aside from selecting their
own Congressional representatives there are many programs and societies established with the goal of
spreading the knowledge and support for certain proposals. Americans for Tax Reform, Citizens for
Tax Justice, and Americans for Fair Taxation are three of many these groups advocate wildly different
ideas, but are dedicated to spreading the word and eventually causing a complete reform of the tax
code. Members of such organizations often endorse specific political parties with the hopes of having
their proposals carried into the White House and eventually passed. Whether they have been
successful remains to be seen, but such groups provide ways for American citizens to have their
thoughts and demands in regards to the taxes they pay heard, instead of it lying entirely in the hands of

California Craftsman Bungalow
The architecture of a time period may reflect more than just our personal style. The California
craftsman bungalow style house was named this because of its introduction to the United States in
California and abundance in California in the 1900s to the 1930s. Craftsman refers to the style of
house; whereas, bungalow references the features of the house and overall use of the house. The
bungalow originated in India where it was as an alternative to tent living among English colonial
traders and officers. The houses were built from materials that were easily accessible on the site of
construction. California Bungalows are characterized by their built in cabinetry, large fireplaces,
dormers, deep eaves, covered front porches with, double hung ... Show more content on

For example, the San Francisco Call wrote an article in about a widow named Bertha Bossel who built
a bungalow house in Berkley with the help of her son. She had been left a widow a few years prior to
her construction of the bungalow, and the only thing she had to support her and her son was the
cottage that she and her husband had built before his death. She picked up many skills during the
construction of the first cottage, and planned to build the bungalow without outside aid. The author
wrote about how Bertha built the house heedless of what the neighbors may say. This indicates that
Bertha did not pay attention to what her neighbors or the public thought of her actions, implying that
she did not care what they said about her actions because she continued to construct the house. The
description of her independent attitude is progressive for that time period, empowering women
because Bertha took on a traditionally masculine roles and completed them as if it was in her nature.
However the language the author used to describe her and her actions in the article were patronizing.
The author first introduced Bertha by stating, with her soft white hands Bertha Bossel, a brave little
woman of Berkeley, has begun the erection of a bungalow on a lot she owns. The act of calling her
brave, suggests that being strong was out of her character because it was not in her prescribed gender
role. Additionally, describing her with soft white hands makes her appear delicate to the reader. The
adjectives the used to describe Bertha fit into traditional gender roles as an act to balance out the
traditionally masculine tasks Bertha fulfilled. For example, the author wrote with a canvas apron to
protect her from the rough timbers, and she smiles and tolls as she does it in order to describe her

  • 2. Marcion Against Gnosticism Marcion also mimicked the church by having his own bishops and a similar system to the church. Because of these things, the church had to recover quickly by meeting the challenge that was created. Although the Marcion church did challenge the Christian church, its beliefs were very similar to the Gnostic beliefs in that they believed that the Old Testament was not scripture and should not be treated as such. Up until the mid to late 1900 s the knowledge about Marcion and the Gnostics was only known through the heresiologists. (Gonzales 1984, 70) Heresiologists Christian writers that argued against Gnosticism and its tenets. These faith systems that were teaching things contrary to what was known in the scriptures were false and needed to be exposed for what they were. The belief that these other religions were going to have a negative impact on the church at large likely caused Irenaeus to expose the differences to protect the scriptures that he held dear. Gnostics and Marcionites had many similar beliefs, but the Gnostics believed that their secret knowledge (knowledge that was only available to select persons) was what provided them with salvation and left others who did not have this knowledge to themselves and their evil ways which will lead them to the eternal destruction. This knowledge was the source that assisted them in escaping from the prison of the body. Without the knowledge they would not be able to escape and could be destroyed with the body when it was ... • 4. Rake Receiver Method Of Multipath Fading Reduction RAKE RECEIVER METHOD OF MULTIPATH FADING REDUCTION S.D Dayo1, K.O Egbo2, 1Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho. 2 Department of Physics, Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Imo State ABSTRACT Wireless communications is, by any measure, the fastest growing segment of the communications industry. It has captured the attention of the media and the imagination of the public. However, the fundamental phenomenon which makes transmission unreliable is time varying fading. The phenomenon is described as the constructive/destructive interference between signals arriving at the same antenna via different paths, and hence with different delays and phases, resulting in random fluctuations of the signal level at the receiver. This paper investigates Rake receiver method of combating fading. The rake receiver uses a combination of correlators to separately detect M strongest multipath components, code generators, and delays, or fingers , to spread out the individual echo signals of the multipath. Each signal is then delayed according to peaks found in the received signal. The rake receiver uses several sub receivers each delayed slightly in order to tune in to the individual multipath components. Each component is decoded independently, but at a later stage combined using delay compensate combiner and MRC dispreading in order to make the most use of the different transmission characteristics of each ... • 5. Chromatography Lab Used to Examine Spinach and Red Cabbage Chromatography Lab In this chromatography lab filter paper was used to examine the different pigments of spinach and red cabbage. There were two hypotheses for both plants. The hypothesis for the red cabbage was that there would be multiple pigments evident. The hypothesis for the spinach was similar in that there would be different pigments present. Both hypotheses were accepted in that there were multiple pigments found on the filter paper of each sample. Major scientific concepts in this lab include chromatography and pigments. Chromatography is the division of mixtures, solution, and others into its different components. Chromatography is often used to separate a solution into its separate parts. Chromatography filters complicated compounds accurately without involving a difficult process so it is often used. In this lab, we used chromatography to separate the different pigments in the plants. When looking at plants, the colors of the plants are the colors that are reflected from the different wavelengths of the light spectrum. The colors that are not evident are the colors the plants absorb and use as energy. Pigments are the compounds of a plant the enable the reflected colors to be evident. These pigments function to capture light energy from the sun to enable the plants to undergo photosynthesis. Experiment Methods 1. • 6. Dante And The Nature Of Sin Dante and the Nature of Sin Often, we cannot see the good until we have experienced the bad. Dante Alighieri, a poet who makes himself the main character in his Divine Comedy, finds himself lost in a dark wood at the start of The Inferno. Though he sees a safe path out of the wood towards an alluring light, he is forced to take an alternate route through an even darker place. As the ending of the pilgrim Dante s voyage is bright and hopeful, Alighieri the poet aims to encourage even the most sinful Christians to hope for a successful end. Thus, Dante the pilgrim goes to hell in The Inferno to better understand the nature of sin and its consequences in order to move closer to salvation; his journey an allegory representing that of the repenting Christian soul. Before Virgil arrives to guide Dante on his journey, Dante shares that he doesn t recall how he lost his way. He tells How I entered [the dark wood] I cannot truly say, I had become so sleepy at the moment when I first strayed, leaving the path of truth (Inferno I.10 12). Because he strayed from the holy path, Dante finds himself lost and trying to find his way back on the right track. Dante s ultimate goal is to to free himself from the dark wood of confusion and chaos. Looking up from the wood, Dante sees the hilltop shawled in morning rays of light sent from the planet that leads men straight ahead on every road (Inferno I.16 18). Dante begins to move towards the light, but is blocked from passing by three ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Gay Rights Movement Essay Thesis Statement: The Gay Rights Movement dates back to the 19th century. By 1970 gay and lesbian organizations existed all over the United States and in other countries all over the world. Some supporters of the movement would say that our society as a whole has made great strides towards acceptance of homosexuality. However, gays and lesbians are still fighting for equality in 2009. The issues are vast and widespread, with same sex marriage at the top of the list. In the world that we live in today one might be surprised to learn how many countries are accepting of gay and lesbians, as well as how many are not. Following the ruling more than 18,000 couples married. Prior to the November 4, 2008 election, a ballot called Proposition 8 was proposed for general election. It called for a ban of same sex marriages. It passed on November 4, 2008 leaving those previously married couples uncertain of their marital status. There were numerous demonstrations throughout the nation. Several lawsuits were also filed. Oral arguments were heard on March 5, 2009 and a decision is expected within ninety days ( California Proposition 8 ). As we await the decision, many individuals are speaking out. If the court rules that only existing marriages of same sex couples are valid, it will be a hollow victory, because we do not want to be the only ones on the Freedom Train. The California Supreme Court needs to overturn Proposition 8 because what Prop. 8 does for the first time in American history is to take out of a constitution a group that has been declared equal by the supreme court (Tyler). LBGT supporters feel the victory must overturn the November 4 ruling as it speaks to a fundamental civil right within our constitution. Same sex marriage is a controversial and very serious legal issue that needs to be resolved. I disagree with the individual state rulings. The laws honoring and protecting heterosexual married couples remains the same in 50 states. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Three Approaches Of Pragmatics According to Schmitt (2010), there are two approaches of pragmatics, a cognitive or psychological approach which is exploring the relation between linguistic meaning of utterances, the decontextualized, what speakers mean by their utterances on a particular situation and how hearer interpret those utterances on those particular situations. Cognitive approach was developed by philosophers Austin, Searle, and Grice. On the other hand, social pragmatics approach which focuses on the communicative exchanges between individuals in social, cultural and other contextual factors. Brown and Levinson (1978 1987) introduced face model of politeness to this approach. The main objective of pragmatics is to study on how non native speakers comprehend and produce speech acts in a target language. Speech act is not the whole of pragmatics, but is perhaps currently the most important part of the subject. Recruitment Methods Recruiting qualified candidates that are able to adequately handle and manage senior level positions of the organization takes a great deal of time and patience. There might be employees working as junior staffs but they have the required qualifications thus when an opportunity arises they are given the priority. Selection Methods Selecting suitable candidates for senior level positions of the organization is also an essential undertaking. There are several considerations an organization must take into an account about a candidate before hiring them. 1. Credentials Assessment. It is very important to know what experience and skillset a candidate brings with them when joining an organization. Individuals with higher degrees, received from premier colleges demonstrate commitment through their qualifications. (McDonald, 2012) 2. Position Matching. Another vital component to the selection process is matching the right individual to the position. For example, a senior level staff member in charge of the organization s finances must have experience and knowledge relating to the management of how a company s finances are handled. If the candidate s experience and skills do not match the position being filled, then obviously, this candidate is not the right match. Hiring a candidate with only some of the skills needed for that specific position could put the organization in a very compromising position. (McDonald, 2012) 3. Personal Characteristics. Another imperative element when selecting senior staff is their personal characteristics in relation to their leadership ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It would be beneficial to analyze various cases where different product categories can be changed and to see how will the certain change affect the financial performance of the company. The second recommendation would be to synthesize all available input from all possible sources internal and external and create a strategic vision that will help the company see where they need to make changes and how those changes will help the growth of the financial. Another recommendation would be to provide customers the service that other competitors do not provide be it either discounts or other ways of promotions. This will help differentiate PepsiCo from its competitors. Do you agree with Indra Nooyi s philosophy that performance and purpose are intimately linked and you can t do one without the other ? The body makes steroids naturally to support such functions as fighting stress and promoting growth and development. But some people use steroid pills, creams, gels, or injections because they think steroids will improve their sports performance or the way they look. Anabolic steroids are commonly used among teenage athletes to bulk up. Unfortunately, the improper use of steroids (even at a young age) causes stunted growth, kidney impairment or failure, liver damage, and an increased risk of heart attack or stroke. It is impossible for researchers to design studies that would accurately test the effects of large doses of steroids on athletes, because giving participants such high doses would be unethical (performance enhancing drugs: know the risks, pg. 2). This further supports that athletes misuse steroids, not only because they are illegal and prohibited, but because they are taking doses higher than prescribed. By taking higher doses there is no way to really know the negative effects that may come with it, because very high doses of steroids has not been very well studied. In addition, the Mayo Clinic states, Taking anabolic androgenic steroids to enhance athletic performance, besides being prohibited by most sports organizations, it s illegal. In the past 70 years, more effective law enforcement in the United States has pushed much of the illegal steroid industry into the black market. This poses additional health risks because the drugs are either made in another countries and smuggled into the U.S. or they are made in clandestine labs in the U.S. (performance enhancing drugs: know the risks, pg. 3). But does society treat those who are different in a negative or positive way? In the novel Flowers for Algernon, the author Daniel Keyes shows an in depth look at the treatment of individuals in today s society. Firstly society tends to discriminate against those whose IQ does not fit into the norms of our society. The physically handicapped in today s world are not considered to be equal as those who fit into the normal physical appearance, Keyes portrays this through Charlie s thoughts while in the café. With his charismatic leadership and ambition, Caesar s rise to power came rather quickly, and he ultimately became the dictator of the Roman Empire. Business, Sustainability And The Natural Environment Business, Sustainability and the Natural Environment, Daniel Katz During the past 25 years, awareness of the environment has increased tremendously. Non profit organizations look beyond institutional goals, and instead, try to find a shared vision that works for everyone in the society. Our society needs to stop consuming as if we have an infinite planet; we have to have integrity for the world we live in because the natural resources that have been sustaining us will not last forever. Companies need to evolve with the modern age and changing consumer market. For example, Netflix never thought they would produce their own shows, however, with the changing consumer market, they have done just that. Also, NGO s sometimes have to partner with bigger for profit companies in order to target a larger consumer base, thus, solidifying the fact that the for profit and non profit sector have to team together in order to sustain the environment in which we inhabit. Business, Sustainability and Poverty, Jacqueline Novogratz This plenary begins by stating that a financial crisis occurs when people in the markets do not trust each other. This essay is a case study analysis that uses the case Ban on Tobacco Ads and talks about the conflict of interests between tobacco producers and the Government of India. In Feb 2001 the Government of India published the news on tabling a bill that bans Tobacco companies on advertising cigarettes and sponsoring the sports and other cultural events. (1) There are several arguments that support the Government s decision: 1. Protection of people s health. As World Health Organization states that the 3 million deaths in 1990 occurred as a result of smoking and in 1998 it raised to 4.023 million. 2. Preventing the children aged 14 24 years from being smokers. According to internal document from R J Reynolds (1998) the bright advertising of the cigarettes that had a camel s picture on the packing was attractive to children and stimulated teenage smoking. 3. Contributions of cigarettes to the budget of India is 0.14% versus the health costs which account for 0.21%. 4. Provision of employment by the tobacco industry is an illusion because those who will not be employed in the tobacco field will be employed somewhere else and will be more labor intensive. 5. Complete bans on the tobacco products give a better decrease in tobacco consumption. This is evident in the investigation of UK s Department of Health (1992) which found out that the banning of advertising resulted in fall of smoking. • 31. Family Dynamics In The Metamorphosis The Perils of Family Dynamics as it relates to The Metamorphosis Pam (Lawson) Beaver Belhaven University Family Dynamics The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka represents the selfish views of family. Kafka transforms Gregory, the son, into a dung beetle to show how members of the family evolve and adjust due to life changing events. Traditionally, when families overcome hardships, a stronger bond is formed between the members of the familial unit. In this story, Kafka takes the family on a journey of life, one day wonderful and the next full of strife. Kafka s view as portrayed in The Metamorphosis is that family, when faced with difficult change, sometimes transforms from a harmonious unit into its selfish individual components. The first narcissistic is the parents and the expectation of Gregory to provide. The first indication of self centeredness is the parents expectation that their son should provide for the household. When his mother arrives at his bedroom door to remind him he has to go to work, Gregory tried to get out of bed, realizing something has happened to him. Others in the home become alarmed that he is not rising as expected, so first his father comes to check on him, then his sister, who whispers Gregory, open the door, please (Kafka, 2006, p.1968). Kafka reveals the family dynamics throughout the story and how each individual fits into the entity. Gregory s sister, in the beginning, is concerned for his well being. However, she relies on him for her everyday needs, so her self indulgent motives become clear. The mother, on the other hand, is bossy and distant. The father is overbearing, depressed, and dependent on his son financially. The main concern of the familial body is getting Gregory out the door and to work so that he can make a paycheck and the individuals can continue in the roles each has absorbed. The second selfish observance is the way the family reacts when Gregory becomes a burden, creating more work for them around the house. Even the hired maid asks on bended knee to be discharged immediately (Kafka, 2006, p. 1979). School Clothes Essay School Clothes I strongly believe that children should come with an instruction manual in different languages, after all, even the most complicated computer system or VCR has a manual in three to four languages, or more. Granted, sometimes we can t understand the instructions, but we have them and sometimes even a toll free help line. Now some people would say their own parent would be the help line but not always does that work out. Our own parents advice can be, shall I say, out dated; for example, many would suggest to us new parents to tell our child, what we say goes, or stop that crying or I ll give you something to cry about, or do it because I m the parent and I said so, not the desired tone for positive interaction ... I m sure that the lack of a Parenting Manual is not the reason for school uniform codes, but in my household uniforms certainly would make mornings easier. School uniforms have a multitude of rewards and benefits for both the parent and child and should be implemented in all elementary schools. The rewards and benefits far outweigh any negative connotations that opposing adults have. These benefits include: reduced headache and stress in the morning, reduced expense of clothing, increased focus on academics in the classroom, increased building of team spirit among classmates, and the, for lack of a better word, non discrimination on the popularity poll. I ll begin with exploring the morning ritual and the reward a uniform has on this process. Critics opposed to uniforms would say the solution to the miserable morning is to lay the clothes out at night, hence avoiding such conflicts. This idea sounds good at the outset; however, it just creates conflicts at bedtime so I haven t seen the advantages or solution to this nighttime ritual. On the other hand, the uniform idea poses some great alternatives; first the choices are limited, usually to a few shirts, sweaters, or sweatshirts, and one or two pairs of pants or shorts, and ... For example, the San Francisco Call wrote an article in about a widow named Bertha Bossel who built a bungalow house in Berkley with the help of her son. She had been left a widow a few years prior to her construction of the bungalow, and the only thing she had to support her and her son was the cottage that she and her husband had built before his death. She picked up many skills during the construction of the first cottage, and planned to build the bungalow without outside aid. The author wrote about how Bertha built the house heedless of what the neighbors may say. This indicates that Bertha did not pay attention to what her neighbors or the public thought of her actions, implying that she did not care what they said about her actions because she continued to construct the house. The description of her independent attitude is progressive for that time period, empowering women because Bertha took on a traditionally masculine roles and completed them as if it was in her nature. However the language the author used to describe her and her actions in the article were patronizing. The author first introduced Bertha by stating, with her soft white hands Bertha Bossel, a brave little woman of Berkeley, has begun the erection of a bungalow on a lot she owns. The act of calling her brave, suggests that being strong was out of her character because it was not in her prescribed gender role. Additionally, describing her with soft white hands makes her appear delicate to the reader.
