The Ears
Ms. Rene C. Miking
It has two functions:
a.Is used for hearing (either pleasant or
unpleasant sounds)
b.Maintaining the balance of the body
or equilibrium
Our ears have 3 main parts:
•Outer ear
•Middle ear
•Inner ear
THE
OUTER
EAR
All sounds that your ears receive travel through
sections as invisible waves.
Pinna or Auricle (Earflap)
This is the part of the
ear that people can see.
The main job of the outer
ear is to collect sounds,
whether they're your
friend's whispers or a
barking dog.
EAR CANAL
It is where the wax is
being produced.
(cerumen/earwax)
Cerumen lubricates
and protects the ear
from dirt and bacteria.
EARDRUM OR TYMPANIC
MEMBRANE
At the end of ear
canal
Separates the outer
and middle ear
THE
MIDDLE
EAR
Tiny cavity filled with air.
Contains 3 bones: hammer, anvil, and
stirrup.
Also reduces the intensity of loud
sounds and equalizes the pressure on
both sides of the ear.
OSSICLES
They are the three
tiniest, most delicate
bones in your body
It vibrates ones the
sound wave strikes the
eardrum sending the
sound to the inner ear.
THE
INNER
EAR
Inner ear, also called
, part of the ear that
contains organs of the senses of
hearing and equilibrium. The bony
labyrinth, a cavity in the temporal
bone, is divided into three
sections: the , the
, and the
.
COCHLEA
It’s a small, curled tube in the
inner ear. The cochlea is filled
with liquid, which is set into
motion, like a wave, when the
ossicles vibrate.
Hearing part of the inner ear
Vestibule (inside the cochlea) –
detects the movement of the
head
• Auditory nerve – sends the
messages (nerve signals from
sound waves) to the brain.
• Brain interprets the sounds and
causes us to hear it.
• Messages from the auditory
nerves combined with messages
from the eyes and muscles, if not
match it resulted as if everything
is spinning.
SEMICIRCULAR CANAL
These are three tiny, fluid-filled tubes in your
inner ear above your cochlea that help you
keep your balance.
When you move your head, the fluid in the canal
touches the tiny hairs.
VESTIBULE
The vestibule is the central
part of the bony labyrinth in
the inner ear, and is situated
medial to the eardrum
(tympanic membrane), behind
the cochlea, and in front of
the three semicircular canals.
The name comes from the
Latin vestibulum, literally an
entrance hall.
EUSTACHIAN TUBE
The Eustachian tube
.
It onnects to the tympanic
cavity to the throat
Blockage of the tube may
cause pain to your ear or, in
worse loss of hearing.
COMMON
EAR
PROBLEMS
Common among children, and also caused
by infections
SWIMMER’S EAR
Infection on the auditory canal
Causes those children who often goes to
swimming
Caused by bacteria that invades the earflap
and the ear canal
It makes the ear tender to touch
May also be itchy or have a discharge
Treated by applying antibacterial eardrop
prescribed by doctor.
EAR CANAL BOIL
> A painful lamp or swelling with pus
that develops in the ear canal
> Caused by bacteria
> There will be itchiness and a
discharge with pain
> Ear boil healed without treatment,
but sometimes doctor’s prescribe a
medicine for pain reliever (an
antibiotic will do also to remove the
infection)
PROPER CARE
1. Cleaning the ear in a right way. Use clean cotton
buds. Never used pointed objects to clean them
(can damage the eardrum). Best time to clean
the ears is after bathing (cerumen is still soft).
2. Lower the volume of the radio or music player
when listening to music. Loud music can
damage the eardrum (leads to loss of hearing).
3. Consult a doctor when an insect or small
objects gets into the ear.

  • 1. The Ears Ms. Rene C. Miking
  • 2. It has two functions: a.Is used for hearing (either pleasant or unpleasant sounds) b.Maintaining the balance of the body or equilibrium
  • 3. Our ears have 3 main parts: •Outer ear •Middle ear •Inner ear
  • 4. THE OUTER EAR All sounds that your ears receive travel through sections as invisible waves.
  • 5. Pinna or Auricle (Earflap) This is the part of the ear that people can see. The main job of the outer ear is to collect sounds, whether they're your friend's whispers or a barking dog.
  • 6. EAR CANAL It is where the wax is being produced. (cerumen/earwax) Cerumen lubricates and protects the ear from dirt and bacteria.
  • 7. EARDRUM OR TYMPANIC MEMBRANE At the end of ear canal Separates the outer and middle ear
  • 8. THE MIDDLE EAR Tiny cavity filled with air. Contains 3 bones: hammer, anvil, and stirrup. Also reduces the intensity of loud sounds and equalizes the pressure on both sides of the ear.
  • 9. OSSICLES They are the three tiniest, most delicate bones in your body It vibrates ones the sound wave strikes the eardrum sending the sound to the inner ear.
