• Union Minister for Road, Transport and Highways
Nitin Gadkari on September 17, 2021, announced
that Delhi-Mumbai Express Highway is being
constructed as the world’s longest highway in India.
• The project is expected to be completed by March
2022. Gadkari made these announcements on day
two of the two-day aerial survey of the Delhi-
Mumbai Express after inspecting the Bharuch
section of the expressway on September 17.
• Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari, Arun Jaitley, and
Sushma Swaraj had laid the foundation stone on
March 8, 2019.
• The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will have India’s first
8-lane bridge that is being built across the Narmada
river near Bharuch, Gujarat, tweeted Gadkari.

and K-pop superstars BLACKPINK has also been
appointed as new SDG advocates.
• UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, while
talking about the SDG Goals, said that we are at
a pivotal moment.

4. RENOWNED THEORETICAL PHYSICIST THANU PADMANABHAN PASSES AWAY AT 64
• Renowned theoretical physicist and professor at the Inter-
University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA)
• Thanu Padmanabhan passed away on September 17, 2021,
after suffering a heart attack at his residence in Pune.
• Padmanabhan was 64-years-old.
• He had authored more than 300 research papers and
several books on quantum gravity, gravitation, and the
structure and formation of the universe.
• Among the most remarkable contributions of
Padmanabhan was the discovery of new connections
between thermodynamics and the general theory of
relativity.
• He also contributed largely towards the analysis and
modeling of dark energy in the universe and interpreting
gravity as an emergent phenomenon.

• 45th GST council meeting: Finance Minister Nirmala
Sitharaman chaired the 45th Meeting of the Goods and
Services Tax (GST) Council in Lucknow on September
17, 2021.
• While addressing the media on the outcomes of 45th
GST Council meeting, FM Sitharaman said that the
Council has taken quite a few people-friendly
decisions.
• The 45th GST Council meeting was attended by finance
ministers from all states and several senior officers and
hosted by Chief Minister and Finance Minister of Uttar
Pradesh.
• This is the first time that a GST Council meeting took
place in Lucknow, capital of Uttar Pradesh. It is also the
first physical meeting of the GST Council following the
outbreak of COVID-19.
