SHANTI BHUSHAN, FORMER LAW MINISTER
PASSES AWAY
• Shanti Bhushan, a former law minister,
and renowned counsel died in Noida.
He was 97 and served as India’s Law
Minister from 1977 to 1979.
• Bhushan was a member of Congress
and thereafter the Janata Party.
• He served as Union Law Minister in the
Morarji Desai government from 1977 to
1979 and was a Rajya Sabha member
from 14 July 1977 to 2 April 1980.

BUDGET 2023, ITR AVERAGE PROCESSING TIME TO BE
REDUCED FROM 96 TO 16 DAYS
• Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated
during the presentation of the Union Budget on
February 1, 2023, that the average processing
time for income tax returns has been lowered
from 93 to 16 days.
• She stated that 45 percent of ITRs are handled
within 24 hours.
• "The administration aims to bring out next-
generation universal IT Return forms as well as
reinforce the grievance redressal process," she
explained.

BUDGET 2023, 50 DESTINATIONS TO BE DEVELOPED
TO PROMOTE TOURISM
• According to FM Nirmala Sitharaman, 50 tourist
spots would be chosen through a challenge
mechanism and developed as a comprehensive
package for local and international tourism.
• Tourism promotion will be carried out on a
mission basis, with the active participation of
states, the convergence of government
programs, and public-private partnerships.

GUJARAT’S TABLEAU WON “PEOPLE’S CHOICE
AWARD” AT 74TH REPUBLIC DAY PARADE
• Gujarat's state tableau at this year's Republic Day
Parade on the topic of clean and green energy
took first place in the People's Choice Awards
category.
• On the 74th Republic Day, Gujarat displayed a
tableau with the subject "Clean-Green Energy
Efficient Gujarat" in New Delhi.
• At the national level celebration and parade of
the 74th Republic Day, 17 states and 6 Ministries
exhibited their separate tableaus.

MANMOHAN SINGH REWARDED WITH LIFETIME
ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS BY INDIA-UK ACHIEVERS
HONORS
• Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of
India, was recently awarded a Lifetime Achievement
Honour by the India-UK Achievers Honours in
London for his contributions to economic and
political life.
• The National Indian Students and Alumni Union
(NISAU) UK will present Dr. Singh with the Honour,
which was revealed during an awards function last
week.

PANKAJ KUMAR SINGH, TO BE APPOINTED AS
DEPUTY NSA OF INDIA
• Pankaj Kumar Singh, a retired director general of
the Border Security Force (BSF), was named
deputy national security adviser on January 16,
2023.
• Singh, a 1988-batch IPS officer from the
Rajasthan cadre, has been given a two-year re-
employment contract.
• Singh stepped down as BSF chief on December
31, 2022. When Singh took command of the BSF
on August 31, 2021, he made history as the first
son and father to hold the top post in a
paramilitary force during their careers.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM
• The first meeting of the G20 Health
Working Group under India's G20
presidency began in Thiruvananthapuram,
Kerala.
• Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar, Union Minister of
State for Health and Family Welfare,
launched the three-day event.
• She stated on the occasion that pandemic
policy must be a defining part of our health
policy because any health crisis today leads
to an economic crisis due to the
interconnected nature of the world.

SIBI GEORGE HAS BEEN CONCURRENTLY
ACCREDITED AS NEXT AMBASSADOR TO
MARSHALL ISLAND
• Sibi George (IFS: 1993), the current Indian
Ambassador to Japan, has been concurrently
accredited as the next Indian Ambassador to the
Republic of the Marshall Islands, with residence in
Tokyo.
• He is expected to begin the assignment soon.

KRISHNA VAVILALA: INDIAN-AMERICAN AWARDED
WITH MLK GRAND PARADE SPECIAL AWARD
• As the United States commemorated the legacy
of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.,
Indian-American Krishna Vavilala received the
MLK Grande Parade Special Award for his
contributions to connecting the Indian diaspora
with mainstream America.
• Vavilala, 86, a longtime Houston resident and the
founder and chairman of the Foundation of India
Studies (FIS), has previously led several MLK
Grande Parades.
• He also dressed as Mahatma Gandhi with the
sole purpose of bringing the Indian community
closer to the Black community, based on
nonviolent principles that both Gandhi and MLK
Jr. had followed.

3RD MEETING OF STEERING COMMITTEE OF THE
KEN-BETWA LINK PROJECT HELD IN NEW DELHI
• On January 18, 2023, the Ken-Betwa Link
Project's Steering Committee met for the
third time in New Delhi.
• Speaking on occasion, Pankaj Kumar,
Secretary, of the Department of Water
Resources, emphasized the importance of
the Ken-Betwa connection project for the
region's water security and socioeconomic
development.
• He stated that it is a showpiece project of
both the Centre and the State and that both
are responsible for completing it on
schedule.

• In Gadag, Karnataka, ReNew Power erected
India's first 3x platform wind turbine
generators (WTGs).
• The new wind turbine generators will be
used in the country's first "Round the Clock"
renewable energy project, which will
combine wind, solar, and battery energy
storage technology (BESS).
• This project will generate enough energy to
power over 1 million Indian households
annually.

INCOME TAX SLAB REVAMP
• During the Union Budget presentation, Finance Minister
Smt Nirmala Sitaraman announced that people earning
up to Rs 7 lakhs need not pay taxes.
• Tax surcharges of the taxpayers in the highest tax bracket
were reduced from 37% to 25%. The bottom line, the new
income tax slab benefits taxpayers in the highest and
lowest tax brackets.
• he older tax slabs supported the Multi Linked Debenture
(MLD).
• It had 12 month maturity period. It was a popular
investment because of its minimal tax gains.
• To avoid the new tax slabs from affecting this, a new
section is added to the Income Tax Act. Section 50AA is to
be added.
• Under this, the income from the Multi Linked Debentures
will be treated as a short-term capital gain.

E – WASTE (MANAGEMENT) AMENDMENT
RULES, 2023
• The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest, and
Climate Change released the E-Waste
Management Rules in 2022.
• It is expected to come into effect in 2023. CPCB
was appointed as the regulatory body to
implement the rules.
• The rules target companies in the consumer goods
field.
• Recently the ministry amended some of the rules.

PAN TO BE USED AS COMMON IDENTIFIER
• PAN is a Permanent Account Number issued
by the Income Tax Department of India. It is a
ten-digit alphanumeric number.
• During the Union Budget 2023, Finance
Minister Smt Nirmala Sitaraman announced
that GoI is to use PAN as a universal
identifier for all digital systems.
• This applies only to specific government
entities as appointed. This will increase the
ease of doing business.

NATIONAL DIGITAL LIBRARY
• According to the National Statistical Commission,
the literacy rate in India is 73%.
• However, the financial literacy rate is very less,
around 24%.
• Compared to the other emerging economies of
the world, the financial literacy rate of India is
very low.
• To inculcate reading habits and to increase the
financial literacy of the country the GoI is to
launch National Digital Library.
• The announcement about the library was made
by the finance minister Smt Nirmala Sitaraman
during her budget presentation..

ADVISORY TO AIR ‘NATIONAL INTEREST CONTENT’
• The Government of India recently issued
advisory guidelines to the private satellite TV
channels in the country.
• According to the guidelines, private TV channels
shall broadcast programs of social relevance
and national importance for 30 minutes.
• This does not include the ad breaks.
• The program should not be broadcasted
between 12 AM (midnight) and 6 AM.

AMENDMENTS IN ENHANCE BUSINESS AT GIFT CITY
• The GIFT city, Gujarat International Finance
Tech City is under construction.
• It is the first greenfield smart city in India.
Today, the city is one of the major
international IT and finance hubs.
• To boost its development, Finance Minister
Smt Nirmala Sitaraman announced several
measures in the Budget 2023.

• On the Brand Guardianship Index 2023, billionaire
Mukesh Ambani rated first among Indians and second
internationally, surpassing Microsoft's Satya Nadella
and Google's Sundar Pichai.
• Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, topped the global list.
• The Brand Guardianship Index, developed by Brand
Finance, a leading worldwide independent brand
consultant, is a global acknowledgment of CEOs who
are creating long-term company value by balancing
the requirements of all stakeholders – employees,
investors, and society.

RAILTEL TO LAUNCH IPTV SERVICES OVER RAILWIRE
• RailTel, a Mini Ratna PSU under the Ministry of
Railways, is launching Internet Protocol Television
(IPTV) services to RailWire users in an effort to give
significant value-added services to its consumers.
• IPTV is a service that uses the Transmission Control
Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) suite to
broadcast television shows and other visual
material.

PUNJAB POLICY ON GROUNDWATER USAGE
• n June 2022, the Central Ground Water
Board reported the groundwater (in the
first 100m reach) of Punjab will be
exhausted by 2029.
• In 2039, the groundwater (in 300m reach)
will be exhausted.
• Following this Punjab Water Regulation and
Development Authority notified directions.
• They were called the Groundwater
Extraction and Conservation Directions,
2023.

SAMMAN: PM – VIKAS
• he Artisans and Craftsmen in India have been
disappearing since British times.
• The Government of India is trying to boost its
economic status and keep the age-old arts and
traditional crafts alive by different means.
• The Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Kaushal
Samman is one such initiative. The scheme was
announced by Finance Minister Smt Nirmala
Sitaraman ..

MAHILA SAMMAN SAVINGS CERTIFICATE (MAHILA
SAMMAN BACHAT PATRA)
•
Mahila Samman Savings Certificate is a new
small savings scheme introduced by the Indian
government in the budget 2023, aimed at
empowering women and girls.
• The scheme offers a deposit security of up to
INR 2 lakhs for a tenure of 2 years, with an
interest rate of 7.5%.

NAMASTE (NATIONAL ACTION PLAN FOR
MECHANISED SANITATION ECOSYSTEM) SCHEME
• In the Union Budget 2023, the Government
of India allocated Rs 100 crores for the
NAMASTE scheme.
• With this, the GoI aims to mechanize septic
tank cleaning and sewer cleaning in towns
and cities.
• The scheme aims to provide an alternate
livelihood to sanitation workers. In addition,
NAMASTE will strive to bring behavioral
changes to them

STUDY ON VETERINARY ANTIMICROBIAL USE
• The Indian Journal of Medical Research that India is
developing the highest resistance to anti-microbial
drugs in the rest of the world.
• In India, antimicrobial resistance is increasing in food,
animals, and humans as well.
• In 2020, the AMU of India was 43% more than the
global average. By 2030, this is to increase by 40%.
• The World Health Organization defines AMR as the
drug resistance gained by bacteria, fungi, viruses, and
other microorganisms.
• The microorganisms that become resistant to the
antimicrobial, are referred to as Superbugs.

WORLD WETLANDS DAY, 2023
• Wetlands support a wide range of biodiversity and
help to maintain natural cycles. They replenish
water resources and protect coastlines.
• They account for 4.7% of the Indian Geographical
area.
• Today 30% of the Indian wetlands have been lost.
And 35% of wetlands have been lost at the world
level.
• To create awareness about the importance of
wetlands and protect them from degrading, the UN
and other international organizations celebrate
World Wetlands Day.

ISRO REPORT ON SSLV MISSION FAILURE
• In August 2022, the Indian Space Research
Organization launched the Small Satellite
Launch Vehicle (SSLV).
• It carried two satellites and both satellites
were rendered unusable.
• The mission was declared a failure. ISRO
recently released a report detailing the
reasons for the failure of the mission.
• ISRO investigation concluded that vibration
disturbances were the major reason for the
mission failure.

developed a fluidic system called Liquid
Windows.
• The main objective of the system is to
reduce energy costs.
• It targets decreasing the energy consumed
during certain processes like lighting the

RESERVE BANK OF INDIA-DIGITAL PAYMENTS INDEX
• The RBI constructed the Digital Payments Index to
learn about digital payments in the country.
• The index is calculated based on five parameters
namely Payment Enablers, Consumer centricity,
payment infrastructure on the demand side, and
payment infrastructure on the supply side.
• The index is calculated with 2018 as the base period.
The 2023 DPI in India is 377.46.
• In 2022, it was 349.30 and in 2021 it was 304.06.
With this, RBI concluded that Digital Payments in the
country increased by 24.13%.

JHARKHAND DOMICILE BILL-UPDATE
• The Jharkhand Government passed the Domicile
Bill and the bill was sent to the governor for his
assent.
• The governor refused to sign the bill. According to
the Governor, the bill fails to provide equal
employment opportunities to all the people in the
state of Jharkhand.
• The bill says that only local persons can be
appointed in Class 3 and Class 4 state government
positions.

WHAT IS ANGEL TAX?
• The Section 56 (2) (vii b) in the Income Tax Act is
referred to as Angel tax.
• These taxes are imposed on startups.
• Say a startup SSS sells one lakh shares to a person
X. Selling price of one share is Rs 5000.
• Now SSS gains 50 crores.
• Say the actual market value of the share is Rs 2000
per share.
• So 20 crore rupees is the actual market value. SSS
made 30 crores of rupees profit.
• So SSS has to pay angel tax on the 30 crores
rupees!

ASSAM G20 MEETING
• The meeting first Sustainable Finance
Working Group of G20 was recently held in
Guwahati, Assam.
• A hundred delegates from 95 different
foreign countries attended the meeting.
• The G20 meeting was inaugurated by Union
Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
• A traditional musical performance was
presented by the Assamese at the Guwahati
airport to welcome the foreign delegates.

DELHI’S CHILD RIGHTS BODY’S WHATSAPP
CHATBOT
• The Government of Delhi constituted the Delhi
Commission for Protection of Child Rights
(DCPCR) under the Commission for Protection of
Child Rights (CPCR) Act, 2005.
• Since its constitution, the DCPCR launched several
technological interventions to establish a good
communication link between the government and
the people. Recently, the DCPCR launched the
WhatsApp chatbot called “BAL MITRA”

ALLOCATION DOUBLED UNDER FAME-2 SCHEME
• FAME is the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing
of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles. It was launched in
2015 to increase the sale of electric vehicles in
the country.
• The scheme was launched under the National
Electric Mobility Mission.
• During the Union Budget 2023, the GoI allocated
Rs 5,172 crores for the fiscal year 2024.
• This is 78% higher as compared to the 2022
budget.

US-PHILIPPINES DEAL ON MILITARY ACCESS
• The United States Government has built
more than 750 military bases all over the
world.
• And more than 120 military bases in Asia
alone.
• However, the military presence between
Australia and South Korea is very little.
• To counter the Chinese moves in the South
China sea and to increase its presence in the
region.

DOCTRINE OF NECESSITY PRINCIPLE
• The post of Chairman of the Competition
Commission of India has been vacant since
the retirement of Mr.Ashok Kumar Gupta in
October 2022.
• Also, currently, there are only 2 members in
the CCI.
• There are many mergers and acquisitions
pending before the commission waiting for its
approval.
• To attend to the pending matter, the
Commission is to create a Quorum of three
members using the Doctrine of Necessity
Principle.

• After the Hindenburg report, Gautham Adani
who was the second richest person in the
world slipped to the 21st position according
to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
• In the last ten days, he lost 108 billion USD.
Hindenburg alleged Adani of stock
manipulation.
• With global scrutiny, the stock prices of the
company are to fall down .

PRASAR BHARATI REVAMP
• The Broadcasting Infrastructure and Network
Development scheme was recently launched to provide
financial support to Prasar Bharati, the public
broadcaster of India.
• It aims to boost the infrastructure of public sector
broadcasters in the country such as Doordarshan, All
India Radio, etc.
• A Revamp to Prasar Bharati!

PACS TO FUNCTION AS CSC
• The Government of India is to increase the
number of PACS (Primary Agricultural Credit
Societies) to two lakhs in the next five years.
• Also, GoI will create multi-purpose PACS in
panchayats. Many storage houses are to be
created along with these measures.
• With big plans on PACS, an MoU was recently
signed among the ministries.
• This includes the Cooperation ministry, MeIT, CSC,
and NABARD.
• Under this MoU, the services of CSC (Common
Service Centres) will be offered by the PACS as
well.

INDIAN MILITARY JOINT TRAINING EXERCISE
TRISHAKTI PRAHAR
• The Indian Defense Forces conducted
firepower exercises called the “TRISHAKTI
PRAHAR” to synergize the firepower assets
and to orchestrate a battle.
• The exercise is important to keep the forces
ready for battle.
• The exercise was conducted by the Indian Air
Force, CAPF, and the Indian Army. It was a
firepower exercise.

PARLI-VAJNATH-VIKARABAD ELECTRIFICATION
PROJECT
• India is to achieve 100% electrification of Railways by
2024.
• The target has been achieved in five different Railway
zones.
• The fifth zone to achieve this was the North Central
Railways.
• Recently, the Vikarabad – Parli – Vaijnath line was
electrified.
• This is a 268 km stretch.
• It is to benefit people in the states of Karnataka,
Telangana, and Maharashtra.

• The Madrid Book Fair is being organized in Spain
since 1993.
• More than 350 stalls are set up by publishers
from all over the world.

Fair will be India.
• Spain was the theme of the International Book
Fair held in Kolkata in January 2023.

• SAR creates two-dimensional and
three-dimensional reconstructions of
landscapes.

ENHANCING CIRCULARITY AND SUSTAINABILITY
PROJECT
• The textile industries of India account for 4% of
world trade and 5% of world GDP.
• However, textile waste from India accounts for
8.5% of global textile waste.
• Over 7800-kilo tonnes of textiles wastes are
accumulated in India annually.
• The numbers are big and to reduce them India
launched the enhancing circularity and
sustainability project.
• It is a “Waste to Wealth” scheme.
• It was launched in collaboration with the United
Nations Environment Programme.

DIGITAL INDIA MOBILE VAN
• The Digital India Mobile Van was launched by the
Ministry of Electronics and Information
Technology.
• The main objective of the mobile van is to spread
awareness of Digital India initiatives and also to
spread the word about the G20 Digital Economy
Working Group.
• Lucknow was the first destination of the mobile
van where the G20 DEWG’s first meet is held.

In 2021, the Aviation Ministry permitted the CMPDI
(Central Mine Planning and Design Institute) to use
drone technology in the coal fields of India.

• According to the recent reports of the tracker on the

• The Surajkund Mela Authority recently
conducted the “Surajkund Mela” along with
the Tourism Department of Haryana and the

• Indian consumers have been constantly
complaining about service providers giving false
promises on internet speed.

Authority of India has been changing regulations.
• Recently, the definition of broadband was
changed.

FAO FOOD PRICE INDEX – JANUARY 2023
• The Food Price Index tells the “monthly” price
changes in world food prices.
• In January 2023, the World Food Price Index was
131.2.
• This is 0.8% less as compared to that of the food
prices in December 2022. T
• he major price decrease was in sugar and meat. The
prices of vegetable oil fell by 2.9%.

RESTAURANT
• Floating restaurants are built on large steel
barges.
• The first floating restaurant of India was built in
Sirhind of Punjab.
• It was built in a small canal near a village.
• The Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation
recently built MV Ganga Vihar, a floating
restaurant at the NI Ghat.

• With the world becoming digital,
ransomware, malware, phishing, and other
cyber threats are increasing.
• There is a need for world governments to
take quick actions to control the threats and
strengthen the cyber security system.

KERALA BUDGET ANNOUNCES GREEN HYDROGEN
HUBS
• During the State Budget Presentation, the Kerala
Finance Minister announced that his government
is to establish “Green Hydrogen Hubs”.
• The State Government is allocating Rs 200 crores
for this.
• The hubs are to be set up in Kochi and
Thiruvananthapuram.
• The project is to be implemented along with the
private partner India Hydrogen Alliance.

INDIA-EU TRADE AND TECHNOLOGY COUNCIL
• India and European Union recently established a new
Trade and Technology Council.
• The council will work to provide security and prosperity.
Under the council, the countries will focus on green
technologies, connectivity, and resilient supply chains.
• The countries have created three working groups under
the council.
• They are Strategic Technology, Digital Connectivity, and
Digital Governance working group; Green and Clean
Energy technologies; Trade, investment, and resilient
value working group.

MOBIKWIK LAUNCHES UPI PAYMENT WITH RUPAY
CREDIT CARD
• UPI allows users to use multiple bank accounts on
the same platform.
• Till 2022, credit cards couldn’t be used on UPI. In
June 2022, the Reserve Bank of India allowed linking
credit cards with UPI.
• Following this, MobiKwik is the first company to
launch this feature.
• Now you can use RuPay credit cards issued by
MobiKwik on UPI.

DIGITAL FORENSIC LABORATORIES
• Digital Forensic science identifies, processes,
acquires and reports electronic evidence.
• This includes data capturing, emails,
smartphone analytics, hard disk retrieval, and
other computer analysis tools.
• With the GST evasions increasing in the
country, DGCI has joined hands with NFSU to
launch Digital Forensic Laboratories.
• They have signed a Memorandum of
Understanding to establish Digital Forensic
Laboratories in the country.
