- Schooling is mandatory in France from ages 6 to 16, with most students (80%) attending public and nonreligious schools. At age 16, students have completed 5 years of elementary school and 4 years of junior high school. - The French Department of Education determines teaching methods, programs, and the functioning of all schools. It recruits, trains, and manages teachers and staff for every school. - There are 30 school districts called "academies" that organize secondary education into collèges for ages 11-15 and lycées for technical or general education tracks ending at age 18.
