Packet switching provides virtual circuits between sites with contracted traffic rates. It shares bandwidth across these circuits more cost effectively than dedicated lines. Frame relay uses packet switching to multiplex logical data conversations over a single physical link using connection identifiers (DLCIs) assigned to each pair of connected devices. It establishes permanent or switched virtual circuits (PVCs or SVCs) between sites connected through a frame relay switch, which routes frames based on their DLCIs.

Advantages of packet switching :- Provides virtual circuits between pairs of sites with contracted traffic rates for each virtual circuits. • Each sites physical connectivity consist of a leased line from the site to a device in the provider network. • Cheaper /less expensive. • It shares the bandwidth/speed. • E.G. Frame Relay.

Frame Relay Operation:- • Frame Relay multiplexes many logical data conversations over a single physical link by assigning connection identifiers to each pair of DTE devices • Virtual circuits are of two types – Permanent Virtual Circuits -PVCs – Switched Virtual Circuits -SVCs • DLCIs are used to identify VCs • DLCIs have only local significance. • Inverse ARP is used to map DLCIs to next hop addresses. • The mapping can also be configured manually.

Frame Relay Signaling:- LMI ( Local management interface ):- • It is used between DTE and the Frame Relay switch • Provides a keep alive mechanism, • Provides the network server with the local DLCI • Provides status information • LMI status messages – Active State – Inactive State – Deleted State
