General Electric Leadership Essay
ASSIGNMENT ON LEADERSHIP
Lecturer: Dr. Brian O Reilly
Title: Compare and Contrast Two Leaders
Executive Summary
This paper would take leadership into account by comparing and contrasting two well known leaders
in General Electric (GE). The paper first introduces two leaders with some brief biographies,
characteristics and their contribution to the GE. It then looks at who would be the more effective
leader by providing with some aspects of leadership. It then comes up with some skills these people
employed in their leadership to help GE growth rapidly during 1990s till now. The next part will put a
conclusion and some recommendations about leadership for potential leaders in the future.

Welch was a very good hunter for opportunities and also a good manager of risks and threats while
Immelt improved what Welch had. As a successful story in business management, application of Six
Sigma program in GE was spread over the world as one of the most valuable lessons among
businesses in the world relating to quality control. (see Appendix B, Story 1)
Above all, Welch was a ruthless taskmaster at GE. Immelt works with long term perspective rather
with a short term one. Immelt proved that he is a very effective leader by helping GE overcome the
hardship in 2001 when terrorist attacks on September 11 were a harbinger of bad times to come for
GE. (see Appendix B, Story 2)
It s really difficult to say this leader is better than another one. To compare and contrast them, in the
range of this paper, in terms of leadership, we would just use leadership styles, traits of emotional
intelligence that helped them become top leaders in the world.
2.1. Leadership styles
In the reign of Jack Welch during his 20 year at GE, a new leadership style was introduced and spread
companywide. Welch developed a ranking system that put employees in one of the three categories.
The top 20 percent were stars , the middle 70 percent were the crucial majority and the bottom 10
percent were weeded out. Through his policy of differentiation, Welch was able to separate those who

The Importance Of Government Intervention In Healthcare
Healthcare is a widely debated topic that affects millions of people in this country, whether one is for
universal healthcare or against it. Millions of people across this country have had to deal with
healthcare one way or another. Having the government intervene in such matters makes things
complicated from Cost to HIPPA and Interventions. The purpose of this paper is to discuss why
government intervention should be limited in terms of healthcare.
The first major reason why government intervention poses a problem for most people is the cost. Most
people do not have the means to deal with healthcare without some type of intervention from the
government but the type of intervening they need may cost them more than they were ready to take
on. As costs increase, we hear or read almost daily that some 39 to 40 million people are without
insurance for medical care. (Grosse). This is due to the rising in cost that the government has put on its
citizens. While the government tries it s best to ensure that everyone is well covered there are still
certain situations that cause people to have to pay tremendous amounts of money out of pocket for
medication and supplies necessary for them. A recent government report stated that for Medicare
alone, more than $2 billion dollars is lost every month due to waste, mismanagement, and fraud.
(Grosse). This causes family across the country to have to make up for this loss by paying for it
themselves, and due to the mismanagement of our

It is made by heating a ceramic material, placing it in a magnetic field then allowing it to cool while
still in the magnetic field. It is the electrostatic equivalent of a permanent magnet. In the electrets
microphone a slice of this material is used as the part of the dielectric of a capacitor in which the
diaphragm of the microphone forms one plate. Sound pressure moves one of its plates. The movement
of the plate changes the capacitance. The electrets capacitor is connected to an FET amplifier. These
microphones are small, have excellent sensitivity, a wide frequency response and a very low cost.
First amplification stage:
This is a standard self biasing common emitter amplifier. The 22nF capacitor isolates the microphone
from the base voltage of the transistor and only allows alternating current (AC) signals to pass.
The tank (LC) circuit:
Every FM transmitter needs an oscillator to generate the radio frequency carrier waves. The tank (LC)
circuit, the BC547 and the feedback 5pF capacitor are the oscillator in the cadre. An input signal is not
needed to sustain the oscillation. The feedback signal makes the base emitter current of the transistor
vary at the resonant frequency. This causes the emitter collector current to vary at the same frequency.
The signal fed to the aerial and radiated as radio waves. The 27pf coupling capacitor on the aerial is to

The Civil Rights Movement Of James Farmer Essay
Freedom and equality are inherent rights in the United States: therefore, I encourage young people to
take on the task by standing up and speaking out on behalf of people denied those rights. We have not
yet finished the job of making our country whole
James Farmer, 19
James Farmer was one of the Big Four of the civil rights movement era of the nineteen hundreds, he
called for racial harmony through non violence. James Farmer helped shape civil rights movements
with his use of non violent protest and activism. This non violence led to popular support for the civil
rights and voting rights acts that would be passed in 1964. James Farmer s stand for racial harmony
and nonviolence, led to freedom rides, sit ins, and the founding of CORE (Congress of Racial
Equality). He used many different mediums for his (stand taking) throughout his (career), of which
include: Congress of Racial Equality, the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of
Colored People), and other labor and civil rights groups.
In the early 20th century it was commonplace for African Americans to be segregated from (Whites)
in the United States of America. Separate seats in buses, different waiting rooms in doctors offices,
separate entrances, and it was even illegal in Missouri for people to make arguments or suggestions in
favor of social equalities or of interracial between whites and Negroes . The legal system and groups

Allegory In Lord Of The Flies
Lord of the Flies, an Allegorical Piece
In Literature, writers apply allegory to add various layers of significance to their works. Furthermore,
allegory makes their stories and characters, intricate, so that they represent something greater than
their literal standing. Provided that, how is Lord of the Flies, an allegory for humanity? As a matter of
fact, several characters in the novel represent a larger aspect, and together, unite the idea of humanity
on the Earth. Ralph epitomizes civilization. At the same time, Jack represents a self destructive
anarchy. Piggy illustrates rational thought, whereas Roger embodies sadism. Lastly, there is Simon,
who exemplifies the spiritual side of man. There are many types of symbols that one uses in ... Show

The final character, Simon, is a religious symbol. Simon exemplifies the spiritual side of man, for he
is compassionate, peaceful, and in conformity with nature. On page 50, Simon is the only boy helping
Ralph build the shelter, proving to be compassionate. His persona is akin to that of Jesus Christ. Like
Jesus, others mock Simon as an outsider distinguishing his behavior as bizarre or queer . When Simon
tells Ralph, All the same. You ll get back all right. I think so, anyway , Ralph is confused and refers to
him as batty (pg. 111). He is also the only one who hears the Lord of the Flies speak and is first to
comprehend that the beast is within each of us. This act simulates Christ s discussion with the devil
during his forty days in the wilderness. The Lord of the Flies tells him, Fancy thinking the Beast was
something you could hunt and kill! (pg. 143). However, because of Simon s uneasiness, he cannot
articulate this understanding. On page 89, Simon attempts to tell the group that Maybe it s only us ,
but no one understands what he means. Later, when Simon realizes the figure on the mountain is just a
dead man , he is killed by Jack s tribe, for they leapt on to the beast, screamed, struck, bit, tore (pg.
153). There are acclaimed parallels between Simon s murder and Christ s sacrifice on the cross, but
Simon s epiphany is more of a debunking,

Renaissance Mamas Research Paper

This car ride had to be the longest one i ve ever been on. I thought to myself as I looked out the

Research Paper On Coastal Erosion
Coastal erosion is an ecological hazard that has been occurring for centuries however rising sea levels
and increasingly erratic weather patterns have the potential to advance the danger and destruction to
much greater levels. While the enormous wave action created by huge storms such as hurricanes is the
most contributive to coastal erosion, the normal but repetitive wave action against the shoreline is just
as destructive over the long term. Coastal erosion is the wearing away of land and the removal of
beach or dune sediments by wave action, tidal currents, wave currents, drainage or high winds. The
coastal land is made up of many and various types of wetlands. Wetland types found in coastal
watersheds include salt marshes, bottomland hardwood swamps, fresh marshes, mangrove swamps,
and shrubby depressions known in the southeast United States as pocosins. Coastal wetlands cover
about 40 million acres and make up 38 percent of the total wetland acreage in the conterminous
United States. 81 percent of coastal wetlands in the conterminous United States are located in the
southeast.
Coastal erosion is major problem in our world today. Water is the biggest factor that shapes the earth.

This chemical based erosion occurs only with certain types of rock such as chalk or limestone, which
are high in calcite. The acidity of the seawater causes a chemical reaction in the mineral, eating away
at it. Another form of erosion is abrasion. This occurs when the sediment suspended in the water is
thrown against the shore by waves. The sediments grind against the land, weakening the structural
integrity of the coastline. Attrition is also a form of erosion. It s the continued wave action hurls stones
and other material at the land, which smooths and breaks up the rocks on the coast, dislodging them
from one another. These in turn collide with other rocks on the

Counterfactual Thinking and Experiences of Regret
Counterfactual thinking and experiences of regret Introduction Counterfactual thinking is the
cognitive process in which individuals can simulate alternative realities, to think about how things
could have turned out differently, with statements such as what if and if only . Counterfactuals can be
either upward, in which alternative realities are improved, or downward, in which alternative realities
are worsened. Reflecting on previous outcomes can make individuals experience regret and this
review will focus on the effects of counterfactual thinking and feelings of regret, which has been
referred to as a counterfactual emotion . Opportunities and regret Roese amp; Summerville (2005) put

Pierro, Leder, Mannetti, Higgins, Kruglanski, amp; Aiello (2008) investigated the effects of
assessment and locomotion modes on engaging in counterfactual thinking and experiencing post
decisional regret. They predicted that people with a higher assessment mode would generate more
counterfactuals and experience more regret as assessment requires critical evaluation and generating
comparisons, they also predicted that people with a higher locomotion mode would generate less
counterfactuals as locomotion suggests an individual is less likely to pay attention to attention and
more likely to focus on moving from state to state without interruption. To test these hypotheses
participants were asked in two studies to imagine purchasing something but it has a negative outcome
and in another study they were asked to recall a time when they purchased something and it had a
negative outcome, regret was measured in each study. The results showed that participants rated
higher in the assessment mode generated more counterfactuals after a negative outcome and
experienced more regret, while participants rated higher in the locomotion mode generated less
counterfactuals and experienced less regret. Summerville (2011) took a step further by incorporating
the functional theory

Life in the city is often chaotic and fast paced. It is as quick as a television dinner. Often, people are
forgetting the art of appreciation. Things go unnoticed like a pebble under a shoe, like sparkling
windows on corporate buildings. Now, people are typically giving more time to their technological
devices which is not necessarily a terrible thing. If anything, it speaks more of an imbalance. There is
a wider disconnect in every day social interactions (communications) and public spaces (location). It
has been noted by a creator of public spaces, Goldberger, that people are there but not there . They
have closed themselves off from experiencing what is right in front of them. For example, the average

J. Kennedy poem Death of a window Washer explores the social side of human nature with its poetry.
The irony of this works attests more of the apathetic nature of people rather than a socializing
community or another urban area. He dropped the way you d slam an obstinate sash. His split belt like
a shade unrolling, flapping . Instead of the sentences being overly flowery like Goldberger s essay,
they are direct and blunt which gives this poem its own eye catching effect. Additionally, there is a
common misinterpretation that the nameless, window washer committed suicide by jumping off the
ledge. This misinterpretation could arise from the window washer s death being viewed by a person in
the city or because the individuals receive more attention in the story He d made the city pause briefly

A Brief Note On Fair Dealing And Fair Use
A recurrent theme evident throughout copyright literature is the comparison between fair dealing and
fair use. These provisions allow for additional rights to be awarded to users for educational or research
purposes. Their meaning and scope are defined by different legal systems, thus are not synonymous
terms. Fair dealing is a legal term pertaining to common law jurisdictions. It is used to establish
whether the use of a copyright material is lawful or whether it infringes copyright. With research or
private study as a central requirement, a two part test must be carried out with the purpose, the
character, the amount, the alternatives, the nature, and the effects of the dealing taken into
consideration. The introduction of the fair use model, with different elements to the US doctrine, is
highlighted by the Modernising Copyright Report 2013. With recent worldwide trends moving to a
fair use doctrine, there are many advocates promoting the method, considering it a highly flexible way
of enabling use of copyright works without infringement. Universities Australia, in its submission to
the ALRC discussion paper, believed the replacement of fair dealing exceptions with fair use would
enable academics to use copyright material in more advantageous ways currently afforded to the US.
Fair Tidmarsh also reach favourable conclusions, noting that it would allow copyright works to be
used in a way consistent with the greater public interest of facilitating

Violence Against Women Is An Old Fashioned Practice
Throughout the years, violence against women has become a national issue, often referred to as a
hidden epidemic by Amnesty International, which spreads through social, cultural and ethnic areas.
The cost of sexual and domestic violence creates a ripple effect throughout today s society; for
example, discrimination of race, ethnicity, and age prevents women from obtaining any form of
justice. Violence against women is an old fashioned practice, but in the last decade it finally received
recognition as a serious human rights issue. Violence against women is categorized into two parts:
social violence, which occurs in public places between strangers, and domestic violence, which takes
place within households and usually between family members. A prevalent and particular problem
area includes psychological issues; women become depressed, isolate themselves, develop sexually
transmitted diseases (STDs), commit suicide, depend on drugs and alcohol, develop poor reproductive
health, and become incapable of supporting their families. Men and children are at risk of becoming
perpetrators due to exposure of violence within households, low education, and childhood abuse.
Education plays an important role in today s society about spreading awareness of violence against
women. The World Health Organization, the Avon Foundation for Women, and Amnesty International,
and the producers/authors of Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women

As we continue to progress further into technological advances, we begin to become more interactive
with our technology. As this Is becoming the norm, for media to be more interactive, new regulations
come into question. This is particularly true for virtual reality games. Kate Edwards wrote a response
to whether virtual reality video games should be more regulated than conventional video games for

on how video games don t differ from virtual reality enough to constitute further regulations. Edwards
focuses most her article comparing the introduction of virtual reality to other media types and their

reader that it is alike any other technology and doesn t differ, thus not needing further regulation. In
doing this, she doesn t leave room for supporting details and specific examples, leaving her with a

Environmental Effects Of Environmental Pollution
It is estimated that approximately 2.4 million people in the United States are affected physically by
pollution every year. Pollution is harmful substances in the air that affect the environment and
poisonous gases are released in the atmosphere. There several types of pollution, which includes:
water, land, and air pollution. All three are very harmful to Earth, and has a dangerous effect in the
end, which is included, but not limited to global warming. Pollution that is in the air can eventually
lead to health problems among humans, and can even affect the environment for Mother Nature itself,
and also animals. Respiratory and lung diseases can result from air pollution over the course of years.
Water pollution effects aquatic animals, which are consumed by humans, and could lead to even
bigger problems overall. Pollution over land can lead to major problems with the soil and groundwater
used to grow these plants, which are also food that is consumed for the human, animal, and insect
population.
The air that we breathe is a mix of gases that encircles the Earth s crust. Those gases known as
nitrogen and oxygen are the two gases that makes up twenty one percent of the atmosphere, and are
known as permanent gases. When that gas go through some type of contraction, it is known to be
carbon dioxide and water vapor, and that s what assist the cycle and growth of plants, photosynthesis
overall, and burning of fossils fuels (Harris, ).
According to the Salem Encyclopedia, air pollution comes from natural and human made resources.
Natural made resources would be pollen from plants that are released and usually causes allergy for
humans, which could result in seriousness. Pollen is the most common causes in allergy in the United
States as of today. It is produced naturally by trees, flowers, grass, and weeds. When the body notice
pollen in the system, it reacts as if pollen is a harmful substance, and when that happens, an allergic
reaction occurs. Some other natural sources are gases and the after substances that come from volcano,
dust, and decomposing matter. Man made resources would include automobiles, airplanes, and
airborne viruses. Global warming is affected greatly by carbon dioxide which is known as the

How Communication Is Influenced By Varieties Of...
Our communication is influenced by varieties of circumstances and people. However, the most
important thing which affects our communication is our backpack, which means the environment that
we raised in. we carry this backpack every time when we communicate with others, so in this essay I
am going to demonstrate my interpersonal communication behavior. First of all, I am going to
demonstrate what about my communication is unique to my specific circumstances. The way of
communication is different when I was talking with Americans and Japanese. Whenever I talk with
American people, I try to be more open mind. Since I came here in NDSU, I have a lot of
opportunities to communicate with Americans. I realized that Americans are so friendly, so I made
effort to adapt American culture. Instead of that, when I communicate with Japanese people, I will be

My Work Ethic
Please describe your work ethic (addressing the issues of homework completion and handing in work
on time). My work ethic is one of my stronger points due to my time management skills. Being busy
most of the time between play, musical, school softball, summer softball, choirs, and school work has
taught me how to manage my time without procrastination. I always make a list of what needs to be
done and when it needs to be done by. I start with the most urgent matters and move on from there
getting to the least urgent matters last. I try my very hardest to always get work in on time. If there

While most people make it obvious when they don t like someone, I usually try to conceal it especially
in situations like these because of the relationship that must endure. This teacher may not have seen
me as the most outgoing person, due to the fact that I m not the first one to talk up in any particular
class. I believe that they would have still seen me as a hard working and dedicated student. To keep
this student teacher relationship I would make sure to use my best behavior and not act disrespectful in
any way. If I ever needed help I would make sure to ask them first, and if their method of trying to
teach me didn t work I would ask a different teacher after or before school without making a huge

Clarkson Lumber Company Case Study Essay
Q1 1. Why has Clarkson Lumber borrowed increasing amounts despite its consistent profitability?
Because they have faced cash shortage trouble. Their profitability has grown for 1993 ~ 1995 period,
as we can see from their I/S (e.g. Sales and Net Income, etc.). However, as its business size grows,
their A/R increased, which means that it is getting difficult to collect cash. On the other hand, A/P
decreased for the same period, which means that the company paid cash for A/P, resulting in critical
cash shortage. Furthermore, the A/P payment period is shorter than A/R collection periods, the
company s cash problem happens to be accelerated.
(Exhibit 1) | 1993 | 1994 | 1995 | 1996 | CAGR | AR / Sales | 0.105 | 0.118 | 0.134 | 0.137 ... Show

How attractive is to take the trade discounts?
If the company can solve the cash shortage problem, taking 2% trade discount is profitable decision.
The Net Income when taking non trade discount is $ 87K and taking trade discount is 131K. The
difference is obvious. Trade discount is very attractive for the company.
Q3. Do you agree with Mr. Clarkson s estimation of the company loan requirements? How much will
he need to finance the expected expansion in sales to $ 5.5 Mil. In 1996 and to take all trade
discounts?
No, Mr. Clarkson s estimation for loan requirements ($ 750K) is not enough. He needs to borrow more
than $ 750K. As you can see from our 1996 pro forma Balance Sheet (with discount, without discount,
respectively), in the both of cases, the company still needs more than $750K from bank to meet their
financial needs. In case of not taking all trade discount, (1996 pro forma without discount) the
company needs to borrow $ $905K, on the other hand, in no trade discount case, the company even
needs more money ($1,112K) to finance their expected expansion. (Please refer to attached excel file
for 1996 pro forma B/S and I/S.)

Utopian Safe Sex Talk
A life filled with purely similar beliefs is theoretically impossible to come by, unless somehow a
Utopian society is developed with distinct guidelines forcing identical ideals amongst everyone. Since
that hasn t occurred yet, it is important that as people we are able to see, respect and possibly even
learn from the beliefs and origins of others. How we grow from our experiences in differing
perspectives and ideologies, demonstrate who we are as humans. Growing up having a very close
relationship with my mother and always maintaining strong communication, talking was always
straightforward. I had The Talk over the process on how babies were made when I was six years old.

The instructor not only was incredibly biased, but also attempted to assert her beliefs upon the many
malleable students watching her in the room. She told us that sex is bad and we should abstain from it.
She made sex sound taboo. She showed us pictures of STD s and STI s to further convey her point on
why not to have sex. She told us that our virginity is a sacred gift and how it should only be given to
the person we marry, not only did this automatically disqualify the portion of the kids who had already
had sex, it also did something worse. It instilled the religious beliefs of abstinence in a public school
environment. Public school is unique because of all the different views and ideals that compose it,
therefore I believe that teaching religious beliefs in a public school environment is incorrect. I felt that
the instructor was wrong in her teaching; instead of teaching impressionable kids the safe ways to
have sex and proper hygiene or how to use protection correctly, she assumed that it would be alright to
simply tell us not have sex and we would incoherently obey (which many of us

The Role Of Death In Western American Culture
Many cultures find it important to honor the deceased, simply having a funeral is an example of this.
In Western Africa, different groups used different art as a way to honor the memory of their people
who had died. Africans, like other cultures, have different reasons for memorializing the dead, but it
comes down the idea that death is not the end. The Dogon people, for example, memorialized the dead
by using art in the form of colorful masks worn during a performance at the funerals. Their reasoning
for this other than to honor the deceased was to lead their souls to where their ancestors are. This ritual
is called a dama, and if they failed to do this, the souls of the dead would not be freed to the afterlife.

properties in the data we possess. One could create such 3D model from historical drawing and
integrate material and physical properties, which can enhance our knowledge of a particular building,
vessel, site or even a city from the past.
Researchers from EPFL used a CAD software to produce a high quality 3D model of the Venetian
Galeazza using ancient drawings found in history books. By using this model and selecting the correct
materials they created a realistic rendering of the ship and, by using a naval simulation tool, they were

Others may feel that America will never accept people of color as equals and thus, may prefer to live
their lives within ethnic boundaries. Nevertheless, these various definitions are not static. American
society is and has been experiencing numerous changes that deal with the issues of the Asian
American minority. Anti Asian laws came in three forms: (1) federal naturalization laws that imposed
a racial barrier on Asian immigrants seeking United States citizenship; (2) federal immigration laws
limiting migration from Asian and Pacific Island countries; (3) state and local laws discriminating
against Asians, often based on their ineligibility for citizenship (Ancheta 22). Asian Americans have
been disenfranchised by discriminatory laws that denied citizenship to Asian immigrants and rendered
them ineligible to vote. It was not until 1943 that Chinese Americans were first permitted to become
citizens; for Asian Indians, it was 1946. For Japanese Americans and other Asian Americans, that right
did not come until 1952. The legacy of these discriminatory policies and the notion of Asian
Americans as foreigners is still strongly felt today, impeding the Asian American political
participation.

How Did The Renaissance Start In Italy
The Renaissance was a period of time between the mid fourteenth century and mid sixteenth century
in which art, engineering, architecture, and music flourished, mainly due to engineers and artists. One
of the most debated questions that historians discuss about the Renaissance is why and how the
Renaissance started in Italy because there are no specific events that started the Renaissance. Rather, it
was a string of events with no clear beginnings except for basic ideas and theories. Wealth and
humanism started the Renaissance in Italy by providing a motive to learn, causing art and engineering
to flourish.
The creation of humanism, influenced by the Italian scholar and poet Francesco Petrarch, helped set

Because of his rejection of the medieval ways of thinking, his insistence of using thought and reason
became the basis of humanism. These [humanists] sought out and delved into classical texts and
believed that education could improve not only the individual, but also society (Blackwell). In general,
most Italian humanists wanted to look at the literary and philosophical works of the ancient Romans
and Greeks. The Italian humanists believed that the ancient works were the best guides for living and,
more importantly, learning. From inspecting the ancient world, Italian humanists could compare their
own civilization and give them a basis for which they could form opinions and criticize their own
civilization. Because of that, the method of criticism emerged. Eventually, most people during the
Renaissance reverted to the classical way of thinking. This impacted people, such as Niccolò
Machiavelli, who criticized people in their leadership skills. He also wrote the novel, The Prince,
which talks about achieving goals to acquire power and leadership including the ends justify the
means , no matter the cost. Humanism also impacted art because the main purpose of humanism was
to focus more on the human

Application of the Personality Theories Developed by Erik Erikson and Raymond Cattell
Personality is made up of the characteristic patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that make a
person unique. It arises from within the individual and remains fairly consistent throughout life
(Cherry, 2014). My personality is influenced from my specific circumstances, my upbringing, and it is
represented best through the theorists of Erik Erikson and Raymond Cattell.
In specific circumstances my behavior changes, I am introverted, and quiet with new people for
example. In large groups of people I stick to my friends and remain quiet. In the instance that I know a
good majority of the people that I am around, I am outgoing. Generally, I don t associate with new
people, and when I do am reluctant to share with them. As a result of my inability to open up to new
people, I ve failed to acknowledge my feelings altogether as well. For the most part I lack a father
figure within my life, but I have accepted this reality. Comparatively my brother has played the male
role. My mom and I for the most part share a complex relationship, but it is a strong relationship all in
all.
My upbringing and circumstances are responsible for my personality. I was born in Allentown,
Pennsylvania. Up till now I have never moved, but my brother and I grew up with two homes. My
brother is only three years older than me, so we often related like peers. As a result of my parent s
divorce, I ve grown up

Grooming CFOs to be CEOs
CFO as CEO Introduction Given the increasing complexity of business and the need to financially
quantify risk and opportunities so options are clearly understood while also operating in uncertainty,
the progression of CFOs to CEOs will continue to accelerate. Reviewing the two articles How a CFO
can graduate to CEO (Brewis, 1999) and Do CFOs really make good CEOs (Picker, 1989) illustrate
foundational points to support the contention that CFOs will continue to be promoted and excel in
their roles as CEOs. How CFOs are Prepared to become CEOs One of the most interesting articles in
the series read to complete this analysis is Do CFOs really make good CEOs (Picker, 1989). This
article highlights how critical it is for a CFO to understand the organizational structure of their
business, while also understanding how best to create a teamwork framework that can enable the
accomplishment of complex objectives (Picker, 1989). This article shows how D. Wayne Calloway
was able to save PepsiCo as a business by having in depth knowledge of operations and the financial
trade offs critical to keeping them operating. He also was able to transform many of the most costly
operations in the company while reducing investments in fixed assets (Picker, 1989). The article also
points to how well Robert Crandall interpreted the impact of deregulation on the airline industry,
while also making the transition from CFO to CEO. Robert Crandall was one of the most effective

true that all technology is bad. Most of it is good until it is used for the wrong reasons. In fact, it is
common knowledge that excessive use of technology in children can resulted to poor memories. The
children of today are born into the world of search engines, and have very little attention on having to
remember things. In the current world, children follow exactly what they see the adults do. In the
novel, Stephenson has also depicted the same. In Chapter 18, Stephenson writes, NO WAY, JOSÉ!

Welch was a very good hunter for opportunities and also a good manager of risks and threats while Immelt improved what Welch had. As a successful story in business management, application of Six Sigma program in GE was spread over the world as one of the most valuable lessons among businesses in the world relating to quality control. (see Appendix B, Story 1) Above all, Welch was a ruthless taskmaster at GE. Immelt works with long term perspective rather with a short term one. Immelt proved that he is a very effective leader by helping GE overcome the hardship in 2001 when terrorist attacks on September 11 were a harbinger of bad times to come for GE. (see Appendix B, Story 2) It s really difficult to say this leader is better than another one. To compare and contrast them, in the range of this paper, in terms of leadership, we would just use leadership styles, traits of emotional intelligence that helped them become top leaders in the world. 2.1. Leadership styles In the reign of Jack Welch during his 20 year at GE, a new leadership style was introduced and spread companywide. Welch developed a ranking system that put employees in one of the three categories. The top 20 percent were stars , the middle 70 percent were the crucial majority and the bottom 10 percent were weeded out. Through his policy of differentiation, Welch was able to separate those who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Importance Of Government Intervention In Healthcare Healthcare is a widely debated topic that affects millions of people in this country, whether one is for universal healthcare or against it. Millions of people across this country have had to deal with healthcare one way or another. Having the government intervene in such matters makes things complicated from Cost to HIPPA and Interventions. The purpose of this paper is to discuss why government intervention should be limited in terms of healthcare. The first major reason why government intervention poses a problem for most people is the cost. Most people do not have the means to deal with healthcare without some type of intervention from the government but the type of intervening they need may cost them more than they were ready to take on. As costs increase, we hear or read almost daily that some 39 to 40 million people are without insurance for medical care. (Grosse). This is due to the rising in cost that the government has put on its citizens. While the government tries it s best to ensure that everyone is well covered there are still certain situations that cause people to have to pay tremendous amounts of money out of pocket for medication and supplies necessary for them. A recent government report stated that for Medicare alone, more than $2 billion dollars is lost every month due to waste, mismanagement, and fraud. (Grosse). This causes family across the country to have to make up for this loss by paying for it themselves, and due to the mismanagement of our ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is made by heating a ceramic material, placing it in a magnetic field then allowing it to cool while still in the magnetic field. It is the electrostatic equivalent of a permanent magnet. In the electrets microphone a slice of this material is used as the part of the dielectric of a capacitor in which the diaphragm of the microphone forms one plate. Sound pressure moves one of its plates. The movement of the plate changes the capacitance. The electrets capacitor is connected to an FET amplifier. These microphones are small, have excellent sensitivity, a wide frequency response and a very low cost. First amplification stage: This is a standard self biasing common emitter amplifier. The 22nF capacitor isolates the microphone from the base voltage of the transistor and only allows alternating current (AC) signals to pass. The tank (LC) circuit: Every FM transmitter needs an oscillator to generate the radio frequency carrier waves. The tank (LC) circuit, the BC547 and the feedback 5pF capacitor are the oscillator in the cadre. An input signal is not needed to sustain the oscillation. The feedback signal makes the base emitter current of the transistor vary at the resonant frequency. This causes the emitter collector current to vary at the same frequency. The signal fed to the aerial and radiated as radio waves. The 27pf coupling capacitor on the aerial is to minimize the effect of the aerial

Furthermore, allegory makes their stories and characters, intricate, so that they represent something greater than their literal standing. Provided that, how is Lord of the Flies, an allegory for humanity? As a matter of fact, several characters in the novel represent a larger aspect, and together, unite the idea of humanity on the Earth. Ralph epitomizes civilization. Simon exemplifies the spiritual side of man, for he is compassionate, peaceful, and in conformity with nature. On page 50, Simon is the only boy helping Ralph build the shelter, proving to be compassionate. His persona is akin to that of Jesus Christ. Like Jesus, others mock Simon as an outsider distinguishing his behavior as bizarre or queer . When Simon tells Ralph, All the same. You ll get back all right. I think so, anyway , Ralph is confused and refers to him as batty (pg. 111). He is also the only one who hears the Lord of the Flies speak and is first to comprehend that the beast is within each of us. This act simulates Christ s discussion with the devil during his forty days in the wilderness. The Lord of the Flies tells him, Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill! (pg. 143). However, because of Simon s uneasiness, he cannot articulate this understanding. On page 89, Simon attempts to tell the group that Maybe it s only us , but no one understands what he means. Later, when Simon realizes the figure on the mountain is just a dead man , he is killed by Jack s tribe, for they leapt on to the beast, screamed, struck, bit, tore (pg. 153). • 10. Research Paper On Coastal Erosion Coastal erosion is an ecological hazard that has been occurring for centuries however rising sea levels and increasingly erratic weather patterns have the potential to advance the danger and destruction to much greater levels. While the enormous wave action created by huge storms such as hurricanes is the most contributive to coastal erosion, the normal but repetitive wave action against the shoreline is just as destructive over the long term. Coastal erosion is the wearing away of land and the removal of beach or dune sediments by wave action, tidal currents, wave currents, drainage or high winds. The coastal land is made up of many and various types of wetlands. Wetland types found in coastal watersheds include salt marshes, bottomland hardwood swamps, fresh marshes, mangrove swamps, and shrubby depressions known in the southeast United States as pocosins. Coastal wetlands cover about 40 million acres and make up 38 percent of the total wetland acreage in the conterminous United States. 81 percent of coastal wetlands in the conterminous United States are located in the southeast. Counterfactuals can be either upward, in which alternative realities are improved, or downward, in which alternative realities are worsened. Reflecting on previous outcomes can make individuals experience regret and this review will focus on the effects of counterfactual thinking and feelings of regret, which has been referred to as a counterfactual emotion . Pierro, Leder, Mannetti, Higgins, Kruglanski, amp; Aiello (2008) investigated the effects of assessment and locomotion modes on engaging in counterfactual thinking and experiencing post decisional regret. They predicted that people with a higher assessment mode would generate more counterfactuals and experience more regret as assessment requires critical evaluation and generating comparisons, they also predicted that people with a higher locomotion mode would generate less counterfactuals as locomotion suggests an individual is less likely to pay attention to attention and more likely to focus on moving from state to state without interruption. To test these hypotheses participants were asked in two studies to imagine purchasing something but it has a negative outcome and in another study they were asked to recall a time when they purchased something and it had a negative outcome, regret was measured in each study. The results showed that participants rated higher in the assessment mode generated more counterfactuals after a negative outcome and experienced more regret, while participants rated higher in the locomotion mode generated less counterfactuals and experienced less regret. • 15. A Brief Note On Fair Dealing And Fair Use A recurrent theme evident throughout copyright literature is the comparison between fair dealing and fair use. These provisions allow for additional rights to be awarded to users for educational or research purposes. Their meaning and scope are defined by different legal systems, thus are not synonymous terms. Fair dealing is a legal term pertaining to common law jurisdictions. It is used to establish whether the use of a copyright material is lawful or whether it infringes copyright. With research or private study as a central requirement, a two part test must be carried out with the purpose, the character, the amount, the alternatives, the nature, and the effects of the dealing taken into consideration. The introduction of the fair use model, with different elements to the US doctrine, is highlighted by the Modernising Copyright Report 2013. With recent worldwide trends moving to a fair use doctrine, there are many advocates promoting the method, considering it a highly flexible way of enabling use of copyright works without infringement. Universities Australia, in its submission to the ALRC discussion paper, believed the replacement of fair dealing exceptions with fair use would enable academics to use copyright material in more advantageous ways currently afforded to the US. The cost of sexual and domestic violence creates a ripple effect throughout today s society; for example, discrimination of race, ethnicity, and age prevents women from obtaining any form of justice. Violence against women is an old fashioned practice, but in the last decade it finally received recognition as a serious human rights issue. Violence against women is categorized into two parts: social violence, which occurs in public places between strangers, and domestic violence, which takes place within households and usually between family members. A prevalent and particular problem area includes psychological issues; women become depressed, isolate themselves, develop sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), commit suicide, depend on drugs and alcohol, develop poor reproductive health, and become incapable of supporting their families. Men and children are at risk of becoming perpetrators due to exposure of violence within households, low education, and childhood abuse. Pollution is harmful substances in the air that affect the environment and poisonous gases are released in the atmosphere. There several types of pollution, which includes: water, land, and air pollution. All three are very harmful to Earth, and has a dangerous effect in the end, which is included, but not limited to global warming. Pollution that is in the air can eventually lead to health problems among humans, and can even affect the environment for Mother Nature itself, and also animals. Respiratory and lung diseases can result from air pollution over the course of years. Water pollution effects aquatic animals, which are consumed by humans, and could lead to even bigger problems overall. Pollution over land can lead to major problems with the soil and groundwater used to grow these plants, which are also food that is consumed for the human, animal, and insect population. The air that we breathe is a mix of gases that encircles the Earth s crust. Those gases known as nitrogen and oxygen are the two gases that makes up twenty one percent of the atmosphere, and are known as permanent gases. When that gas go through some type of contraction, it is known to be carbon dioxide and water vapor, and that s what assist the cycle and growth of plants, photosynthesis overall, and burning of fossils fuels (Harris, ). Nevertheless, these various definitions are not static. American society is and has been experiencing numerous changes that deal with the issues of the Asian American minority. Anti Asian laws came in three forms: (1) federal naturalization laws that imposed a racial barrier on Asian immigrants seeking United States citizenship; (2) federal immigration laws limiting migration from Asian and Pacific Island countries; (3) state and local laws discriminating against Asians, often based on their ineligibility for citizenship (Ancheta 22).
