Why Street Gangs Exist
Introduction The reason behind the street gangs has been largely associated with myriad of social and
economic reasons. Among the reasons as to why youth join gangs are desperation due to poverty as
well as breakdown of a family as a cohesive unit. According to the survey of gang areas, Los Angeles
showed identical poverty map within the area. In ss much as there are some other reasons behind
youth joining gangs, when critically analyzed it, reveals that such reasons are always directly or
indirectly related to family poverty and situations. Examples of these gangs are Surenos and Nortenos
whose mode of operation and activities though different, share some similarities. Surenos and
Nortenos all engage in criminal activities just like any other gangs where they sell drugs as a source of
revenue. Nortenos focus on street distribution of drugs and mainly narcotics on top of engaging in
murders, shootings vehicle burglaries, vehicle theft or home invasion burglaries. Surenos engage
themselves in various aspects of criminal activities from drug trafficking, homicides, kidnapping, as
well as violent instances especially domestic violence against their families and girlfriends. Their
criminal activities also involve human trafficking. Many states have faced the high profile Surenos
criminal cases, for instance in Washington state in 2011 a Surenos playboy shot at a car show up in
Kent Washington and was apprehended thereafter. Nortenos are usually not widely spread across the

CIVICS PORTFOLIO ESSAY

Should the Canadian Senate be left alone, reformed or abolished?
By: Shakir M. Lakhani SECTION 4
Final Civics Essay
June 6th, 2011
Shakir M. Lakhani
Topic: Senate Reform
Do you feel your government is fair? Does it manage the issues properly, with careful thought, and an
open, objective mind? Is it effective? Do you feel that the Senate is a sober chamber of second
thought? Do you feel that the best interests of the Canadian public are always preserved in the current
model of our governance? If so, you re mistaken. Under our present governance, we have two houses,
the House of Commons, and the Senate, the reform to the latter being the main topic of ... Show more

In terms of the reform option, as a country, we absolutely cannot afford to abolish the Senate, as it
serves as, and is meant to be, a body of un biased economic and social élite , who are capable of
making/approving decisions to benefit the citizens of Canada, rather than the House of Commons,
which makes decisions by majority, and in their own interest. The Senate is meant to play a neutral
role, to be the final judge to make the un biased, informed decisions. Sometimes, the Senate has taken
on other roles, which it performs and works with very effectively. In fairness to them, these often do
not receive much media coverage, increasing the public perception that Senators do very little. For
example, the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science, and Tech released a report on the
Health Care system, a month before the Romanow Report on Human Health Resources Planning.
They have also researched issues such as poverty in Canada, and legalizing Marijuana.
No matter which angle one looks at this from, the effective existence of the Senate is necessary to
stabilize the government, as it is near to impossible to have an ideal House of Commons, as confirmed
by an English political journalist Walter Bagehot.
He wrote about the British parliamentary System (which our system is based off), and was quoted
saying, If we had an ideal House of Commons...

Alaska Gold Rush Research Paper
The Alaskan Gold Rush (Klondike Gold Rush) was a migration of an estimated 100,000 prospectors
to the Klondike Region in search of gold. Gold was discovered by local miners in August of 1896
which caused the prospectors to travel in. The gold rush ended in 1899 with very few people actually
striking it rich. In order to get to the Klondike region most prospectors took the route through the port
of Dyea and Skagway in Southeast Alaska. From there they either followed the Chilkoot or the White
Pass trails down to the Yuko river where from there they could then sail down to the Klondike. The
Canadian authorities required the prospectors to bring at least a years worth of food with them in order
to avoid starvation. This journey took most of

Yellow Wallpaper Madness
In Charlotte Perkins Gilman s story The Yellow Wallpaper tells a story about the main character who
seems to be in touch with her sanity at the beginning of the story, as she obsesses over her room she is
pulled further and further away from sanity. The husband believes he can help his wife, but in the end,
it just makes her worse. The main character in the beginning of the story believes that there is nothing
wrong with her and she just has a temporary nervous depression. Her husband is a physician and won t

serious! But these nervous troubles are dreadfully depressing. As they stay there for the next three
months and she is stuck in this room all day. She gets worse and starts to get obsessed with the yellow

Marketing Process Of Any Product Or Service
The marketing process of any product or service begins with potential consumers; it is a customer
centric environment which primary function seeks to fulfil the needs and wants of each individual
customer (Sheth, Sisodia, Sharma, 2000, p.55). It is these wants that marketers have to identify and
manipulate to turn them into a need and subsequently a sale, people have narrow, basic needs but
almost unlimited wants (Kotler, Armstrong, Wong, Saunders, 2008, p.9). The majority of the
population may have unlimited wants however they also have limited resources so value for money is
a crucial factor in the process of turning potential customers into consumers. Understanding the
market is therefore the first step in determining whether a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Pyramids Centre , uses multiple segmentation through use of a range of gym memberships so they
can specifically tailor a marketing strategy for each sub group, in this example the target group refers
to their student membership offer. Characteristics of this group would primarily be highlighted as low
income and the service being offered may not be a need or even seen as an important want , so it may
seem difficult to appeal to this market. However according to Kotler (1980, p.78) a segment must be
sufficiently large and with more than 20,000 students living in the city centre it would be essential to
identify the student population as potential consumers; this has been implemented through allowing a
somewhat exclusive and cheaper deal for students only which allows for the service to appear more
lucrative. A successful organisation however will not just appeal to one segment of the market,
Marketers often use multiple segmentation bases in an effort to identify smaller, better defined target
groups (Kotler Armstrong, 2011). Another form of segmentation which a company can appeal to
relates to location; geographic segmentation occurs to attract customers in their immediate
surroundings and is a technique shown by the the Pyramids Centre, The rationale behind this approach
is that people who

What Is A Social Surrogacy Hypothesis
Positive effects[edit]
Social Surrogacy Hypothesis[edit]
Current research is discovering that individuals suffering from social isolation can employ television
to create what is termed a parasocial or faux relationship with characters from their favorite television
shows and movies as a way of deflecting feelings of loneliness and social deprivation.[1] Just as an
individual would spend time with a real person sharing opinions and thoughts, pseudo relationships
are formed with TV characters by becoming personally invested in their lives as if they were a close
friend [1] so that the individual can satiate the human desire to form meaningful relationships and
establish themselves in society. Jaye Derrick and Shira Gabriel of the University of Buffalo, and Kurt
Hugenberg of Miami University found that when an individual is not able to participate in interactions
with real people, they are less likely to indicate feelings of loneliness when watching their favorite TV
show.[2]
They refer to this finding as the Social Surrogacy Hypothesis.[1] Furthermore, when an event such as
a fight or argument disrupts a personal relationship, watching a favorite TV show was ... Show more

value on achievement and were more creative. Similarly, while those exposed to negative role models

Small and Medium Enterprises
INTRODUCTION SME Definition Presently, there is no common definition of small and medium
enterprises (SME) in Malaysia. Different Agencies define SME based on their own criteria, usually
bench marking against annual sales turnover, number of full time employees or shareholders funds. In
addition, present definitions focus mainly on SMEs in the manufacturing sector. The establishment
and adoption of standard definitions for SME will facilitate better identification of SME across
sectors, thus enabling more effective formulation of SME policies and implementation of SME
development programs, and provision of technical and financial assistance. It will also allow better
monitoring of SME performance and their contribution to the economy, but the way as officially, SME

When you are born with certain characteristics, leadership can sometimes come easy. Like Dr. Brian
Hemphill said in the video, age does shape natural born qualities on leadership. A person at 10 years
old that is born with leadership qualities will think differently of those qualities at 40, 50, or 60 years
old. In order to gain a following, it is however important to posses these qualities. Courage is a quality
I have difficulty with. I have had this issue since I was a little girl and still struggle with it in my day

something. It is hard for me to have courage because I don t like rejection or failure. I have leaded by
watching this video that leaders don t become leaders in a shell. It is necessary to acquire courage and
perfect that quality. I could start practicing courage by giving myself courageous task weekly. An

Fahrenheit 451 Society Analysis
When Ron Jones had manipulated his class into a mild form of neo nazism, most, if not all, took
notice, with the small exception of his class. His class had no idea what they became until the end of
the experiment. This raises the question: How can you tell whether or not something is wrong with
society? Now, obviously the whole something is wrong with society boils down to nothing more than
an opinion, so as a way to measure it, I will focus on societies that are largely believed and generally
accepted to be corrupt, so as much as I d love to talk about how screwed up our current society is,
because I m in the unfortunate minority, I d have to stick with the Nazi regime and fictional
governments. I will be presenting three different corrupt policies for each argument: Fahrenheit 451
society, another fictional society, and real society The first sign that a government or society is corrupt
is cruel or unusual punishment. Governments that punish those that have committed crimes that
present no right to be punished. In Fahrenheit 451 , the greatest look we ever get at their punishment
(besides the burning houses) is what happened to the poor chap minding his own business. The guy
wasn t even doing anything even remotely criminal, but he still was subjected to lethal punishment.
Another example is the IDW universe of Transformers. In the comic the last days of peace on
cybertron is presented in a very dark and gloomy way. For example, anyone that spoke out against the

This year during wrestling I was captain of the team, and this was a big responsibility since being
captain is a big deal. Being captain isn t about giving commands to people as you please or hazing
people who aren t as good as you. It s a whole lot more than that. To be a captain or leader, you must
show good examples, give advice when teammates are struggling, inspire teammates, and the list goes
on. Many different qualities are required to be a successful leader like having good focus, being
strong, having confidence, patience, and many more qualities. In the end it all comes down to a leader
leading his team to victory. Its sound easy, but it depends on the leader, and the teammates trust into

However, unlike Jimmy, Ruby is the first out of the five children in Stolen to be chosen by a white
family, where her life becomes a constant cycle of sexual and oppressive abuse, manipulated into
staying quiet with gifts. Throughout this, Ruby continually calls out for her mother, as she longs for
the family and love that she lost at a young age. Progressing through the story, Ruby becomes an
unpaid domestic, vulnerable to constant abuse and suffering, whether mental, physical or sexual, and
gradually loses hope and her mind, as she develops a dreadful mental illness that consumes her. At the
plays revolution, she does not recognise her own family and is noticeably broken, as everything she
once had was taken from her, including her sanity.
Ruby conveys that her personality is rather passive, as she is more fragile over the course of the play.
She does not often interact with the other children and stays quiet, due to her abuse and manipulation
keeping her from developing a true personality at such a young age. This periodically becomes a clear
result from these things, as she has forgotten what it feels like to be loved and cared for from when she
lost her mother.
Physicality:
Ruby s movement is frantic and twitchy, with impulsive turns and looks, always fearful and anxious.
When sitting or standing, she will curl up and hold herself or her doll as self protection mechanism.
She is introverted, reflecting how broken she is, even talking to herself instead of others once she has
lost everything.

Causes Of Water Pollution In The Huangpu River
Pollution of Water in the Huangpu River Introduction The Huangpu River is located in Shanghai,
China. Goes through Shanghai from South West to North East. It is the water supply to the 13 million
people in the city. It also serves importance for tourism, fishery, navigation, and, most importantly,
receiving wastewater. In the mid 1980s, a control plan for the pollution in the Huangpu River was
made. But exactly how polluted is the Huangpu River? Causes of Pollution (5) (Pollution of the
Huangpu River by percentage (5)) There are four attributes to the pollution of the Huangpu River.
First, wastewater discharged to the Huangpu River contains large amount of organic substances, which
create a significant demand for dissolved oxygen in the water. Second, about 81 per cent of the total
waterways in the city are polluted. Third, the most serious pollution occurs in the urban section,
particularly at the water intake points for the Nanshi Water Treatment Plant and the Yangpu Water
Treatment Plant. Finally, the tidal nature of Huangpu River restricts the release of organic pollutants to
downstream stretches. Wrote the study case that was prepared by Chonghua Zhang and published on

Anthrax in Bioterrorism
As America rises shakily to its feet after September 11th, a man from American Media Inc. breathes in
a funny powder from a letter in his office. Five days later he ís in the hospital, an apparent severe case

Gruinard Island was a mess of death and contamination after testing it was indeed the only

another hundred sheep to test the safety of the island. All these sheep survived]. The U.S. took another

called themselves the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases,

refined to its most lethal potential. And, like every great American Research facility, the whole area
had round the clock military security, and every scientist was given a gun to keep in proximity during
all work hours. They stated that, ideally, a hundred grams of dried anthrax could destroy a whole city,
and every gallon could murder every human being on earth. Thankfully, itís not an ideal world, and
the anthrax bomb was not perfected. The Institute continued work on anthrax until 1969,

Snoopy for the Win
Introduction
How many people, by a show of hands, have a dog or at some point want to get a dog?
I don t have a dog, but if I were to get one, I know exactly which dog I would get. By far, the coolest
dog in the world, cooler than the Robert Downey Jr. and yes, even cooler than James Bond is of
course Charlie Brown s beloved pet, Snoopy.
Snoopy, I believe, is the best dog to ever be drawn (motion with hand) into this world because we can
all relate to him in some way or another. He gives us three tions as I like to call them. What do I mean
by tions? I mean he gives us a realization, he gives inspiration, and he gives us a demonstration or

Let s first start with how Snoopy gives us a realization.

While gender inequality in business has improved over the years, there are still many encounters in the

and a major event occurs. The once united kingdom divides into the Northern Kingdom of Israel and
the Southern Kingdom of Judah. At this point, the narrative becomes a parallel accounting of
monarchs from both kingdoms. The author selects ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

was the general in an army at Ramoth Gilead. When Elisha s assistant arrived and anointed Jehu king
of Israel while he was still under the command of King Joram, son of King Ahab. Under Jehu s hand
and direction, King Joram, who was King of Northern Israel and King Ahaziah, who was ruler of the
Kingdom of Judah and were both killed. Jezebel, the rest of the house of Ahab, and King Ahaziah s 42
brothers were also wiped out by order of Jehu. Under Jehu s rule, the Kingdom of Israel was so
thoroughly purged and destroyed that it s temple site remains a refuse dump to this day (2 Kings
10:27). King Jehu established and maintained the longest dynasty the Northern Kingdom of Israel.
Although God promised Jehu that because you have done well in doing what is right...your sons shall
sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation (2 Kings 10:30). Jehu did not follow God with all of
his heart, and did not fully purge the kingdom of idols, as a result, the next four generations of kings
under the line of Jehu did evil in the sight of the Lord (2 Kings 13:2, 11; 14:24;

Improving The Mortality And Morbidity Of Cardiovascular...
1. Innovation to improve the mortality and morbidity of cardiovascular disease in developing
countries may involve new surgical procedures, new implants and pacemakers, coronary artery
bypasses, surgical treatments for Atrial fibrillation, repair of congenital heart defects, heart transplants,
aortic arteries repair, replacement or repair of heart valves, and aneurysm repair (Hsieh, Chang, Lee,
Chen, Chan, 2012). Moreover, the innovation involves the integration of computer charting and data
collection. This may involve a computer based data registry that is responsible of storing patient
related data. Developing countries are stepping away from the pen and paper charting system to a
more sophisticated computerized system (Hsieh et al., 2012). This will allow for better tracking and
follow up of complicated cases. Moreover, technological advances in imaging, screening, and
diagnosing methods may also help reduce morbidity and mortality related to cardiovascular disease.
Developing countries are now able to conduct ECG s, stress monitoring, heart changes monitoring,
radiological procedures, and labs that could target specific cardiac markers Hsieh et al., 2012). 2.
Tobacco use kills millions of people each year. Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer (CDC,
2011). Tobacco control and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommended the implementation of

Examples Of St. Petersburg Paradox
2.2.6 The Bernoulli Hypothesis
Daniel Bernoulli, the 18th century Swiss mathematician evinced great interest in the problem known
as St. Petersburg paradox and tried to resolve this. Bernoulli establish that Russians were reluctant to
make bets even at better than 50 50 odds knowing wholly that their mathematical expectations of
winning money in a particular kind of gamble were greater the more money they bet. This
contradiction is known as St. Petersburg Paradox. St. Petersburg paradox denotes to the problem why
most people are unenthusiastic to take part in a fair bet or game.
For example, offer of participating in a gamble in which a person has even chance (that is, 50 50 odds)
of winning or losing £1000 is a fair game. To explain it, Bernoulli ... Show more content on

Since the individual behaves on the basis of expected utility from the extra money if he wins a game
and the marginal utility of money to him declines as he has extra money, most individuals will not
play the game , that is, will not make a bet. It is in this way that Bernoulli resolved St. Petersburg
paradox .
A graphic illustration will make clear Bernoulli s solution to the paradox. Consider Figure 17.1 in
which on the X axis, the quantity of money (thousands of rupees) and on the Y axis, marginal utility of
money (rupees) to an individual are measured. Suppose an individual has 20 thousands of rupees with
him and can make a bet at even odd (i.e., 50 50 chance) of winning or losing rupees one thousand.
If he wins the bet, money with him will rise to 21 thousand (20 + 1) rupees. If as a result of an
increase in money with him, his expected marginal utility of money declines, then the expected
marginal utility of extra one thousand rupees to him which is depicted by the rectangle CDFE is less
than the extra marginal utility of the previous one thousand (i.e., 20th thousand) rupees which is
measured by the rectangle

The Dramatic Significance of Act 3 Scene 4 of The Banquet...
The Dramatic Significance of Act 3 Scene 4 of The Banquet Scene of William Shakespeare s Macbeth
Throughout this scene we can see that both versions have been created to show the best interpretation
of the play Macbeth. Polanski s version is more realistic but I feel that it does not show the play in the
way in which Shakespeare had intended as this version was created by a film producer who had added
extra scenes and changed lines for some of the characters. He also used special effects which made the
play more of a viewing pleasure and helped create the realistic effect. The BBC version is less realistic
as it was a low budget production and was stage produced. In this production there where no ... Show

In Polanski s film, there is much more artistic license because the film isn t faced with the restrictions
that a stage production is. As such, the banquet hall is well lit and the hall is filled with guests and
slaves. Also there is bear bating in a characterisation of line 100, Approach thou like the rugged
Russian bear . This is proof of the greater artistic license that Polanski s version has, as they can even
have live animals on set. A close up of Macbeth is used at this point showing him enjoying the scene,
and this portrays the savagery of the human world. Macbeth is characterised as weaker than in the
BBC version, and the actor is younger.
Almost immediately the first murderer appears and starts to inform Macbeth of the murder they have
committed on his behalf, in the privacy of an empty hall. The murderer tells Macbeth about how they
(the murderers), dispatch d , Banquo, but how his son Fleance escaped their grasp. Macbeth is
unhappy at this news ( I had else been perfect; whole as marble, founded as the rock ), but
nevertheless he is pleased that Banquo is dead. The murderer departs as Lady Macbeth enters the hall
with the promise from Macbeth of, to morrow, we ll hear ourselves again . In Polanski s version the
murderers are killed by Macbeth s men and their blood soaked carcasses are dragged through the
castle leaving the

Adaptation Of Lady Macbeth
In his Macbeth adaptation (1971) Roman Polanski s makes various intriguing and meaningful
decisions to underscore the subjects of aspiration, culpability, and the corruption related to supremacy.
From his unprecedented position, the most fascinating decision was the choice to give Francesca
Annis the role of Lady Macbeth. Customarily, Lady Macbeth is a more established figure in the story,
and her control over Macbeth is that of a solid willed spouse. Be that as it may, by making a 26 year
old physically alluring woman perform Lady Macbeth, Polanski is able to affect Lady Macbeth and
her maneuvers with an extra layer of enticement. This can be analytical, in light of the fact that while
the underlying motivation for Macbeth s conquest is surely given by the ... Show more content on

His aspiration is mainly to satisfy her and fulfill his maximum capacity in her eyes. Besides, in this
renowned, Out, damned spot sleepwalking scene where Lady Macbeth can not clean her hands from
nonexistent blood, Polanski has Francesca Annis play the scene completely naked. This gives
weakness and impotence to Lady Macbeth, a truly appalling sight given the past manifestations of her
mettle. Here, we see this solid, attractive woman lose countenance before our eyes, and our sentiments
for her turn to pity.
Her nakedness, effectively represents the stripping away of her act. Obviously, her prayers to the
spirits were not fulfilled, as she is troubled by sentiments of regret. The scene is brimming with
incongruity as she has experienced a complete inversion of her previous, false self. Rather than
longing for darkness, she now has light by her continually . While she derided at Macbeth s terror of
the blood he had on his hands, saying a little water was all that was required, she is presently
compulsively cleaning her hands, visualizing they are deeply embedded with blood: here s the smell
of the blood

Essay about What Really Happened to the Lindbergh Baby
What REALLY happened to Charles Augustus Lindbergh Jr.? Patience Smith Intro to CJ System
CJ101 02 Prof. Dan Bilodeau On June 22, 1930, Charles Augustus Lindbergh Jr. was born to the
infamous Lucky Lindy and his wife, Anne. When he was a mere 20 months old, he was kidnapped
from his crib in the house where parents and staff were in the house beneath him. The kidnapping
occurred from a second story window in a rainstorm where no one heard a thing! Here in lie the
questions that we will discuss in this paper. The police suspected an inside job from the beginning.
Whomever carried out the abduction knew the whereabouts of the nursery and the parent s plans for

The New Jersey police became heavily involved in a battle over the jurisdiction of the case. Another
questionable problem with the evidence was that the child was pinned into his crib so that he wouldn t
move at night and somehow, when the child was abducted, whomever took him, didn t move the pins
or even touch the pins to get him out of the bed. There were no fingerprints on the ladder, not even
where the person that made the ladder would have left fingerprints, showing that everything had been
wiped clean. Then there was the ransom note that was written with grave misspellings and horrible
Germanic construction. The next question involved is with the courts, the adjudication, arraignment
and the preliminary hearing. Throughout all of the investigations, they came down with one principle
suspect. A Bronx carpenter by the name of Bruno Richard Hauptmann. He passed a $10 gold
certificate at a gas station from the ransom money and this led to his subsequent arrest, trial and finally
the death penalty. Ultimately, the police found about $14,000 or more of the ransom money at the
suspect s home. In newspapers, the case appeared open and shut. Hauptmann had entered the United
States as a stowaway, with a prison record in Germany for robberies.

Pinatubo Of 1991 Research Paper
Some volcanoes cause tons of hot lava, poisonous gas, and ash that has the ability to travel hundreds
of miles, destroying businesses, homes, animals, people, and frankly everything in its path, some
volcanoes can erupt and leave nothing behind. On the other hand, there are eruptions that are mild and
have minor eruptions which do not cause such harm as the major eruptions. When a volcano erupts the
gases, vapors, and ash is injected into the stratosphere and forms a veil.
The effect of the volcanic eruption depends on the particle amounts and sizes, their distribution,
location in terms of latitude, and the residence time in the atmosphere. After eruptions, the link
between the dust injected into the atmosphere via eruptions were observed ... Show more content on

The pollution in the air from the volcanic eruption was noted to have affected the radiation transfer in
the atmosphere. Lamb 1970, found that there was a decrease in direct solar radiation and an increase
in diffusion in the year following an eruption, and if the dust veil was large there may also be a
lowering of surface temperatures. (Lamb 1970) The most well studied eruption was the Mt Pinatubo
eruption of 1991, although not the largest in history. The Pinatubo eruption produced an estimated
peak aerosol mass loading of 30 x 1012 g or 30 Tg, making it the largest measured injection into the
stratosphere in the 20th century (McCormick and Viega 1992). This eruption ejected high levels of
SO2 and as measured by the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) was found to be 20Tg
(Bluth 2003). Figure 1 shows the movement of the sulfur aerosols throughout April 1991 through
January 1994. The transport of gases was very rapid south across the equator with this eruption due to
the meridional circulations not previously seen in other eruptions such as El Chichón. In a study done
by Young et. al. 1994 found that the southward transport of aerosol measured with the satellites SAGE
II and ISAMS (Grainger 1993) were caused by local heating which induced this circulation. At

Contributions Of Louisa May Alcott
Good books, like good friends, are few and chosen; the more select, the more enjoyable Louisa May
Alcott. There are so many novels that have changed American literature because of their authors. One
of which is Louisa May Alcott. Examples of her work consist of Little Women, Hospital Sketches,
Little Men, and so many more. These novels all have their own personal story and genre. Although
Alcott was raised in poverty, she proved to be an incredibly inspiring American author because of her
realism and the variety of her writing. May Alcott was a passionate, driven lady that was born in
Germantown, Pennsylvania, on November 29th, 1832. Her family and friends consisted of, Henry
David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Theodore Parker (Louisa 1). These wise, educated men
were Alcott s mentors growing up. She looked up to them for their knowledge of academics. She,
herself, was educated by her father, Amos Alcott until 1848 (Louisa 1). She got some of her
inspiration for her writing growing up. Some influences of her writing came from being ...a nurse
during the Civil War (Kellman 39). This tramatic experience gave her audience a unique perspective
and it also helped the story seem sensible. Her audience felt like they were actually at war because of
her talent in writing literature. Also, her experiences with poverty provided not only content and
substance of much of her later writing.. (Kellman 40). These experiences shaped and molded her
writing to be supremely

What s Eating Gilbert Grape Essay
The film What s Eating Gilbert Grape features a morbidly obese woman, a dilapidated house, an
autistic teenager and the boy everyone counts on to take care of them: Gilbert Grape. Caretaker.
Provider. Father. Trapped by obligations and expectations beyond his years, Gilbert is not only trapped
by circumstance; he is also trapped emotionally. The town he lives in is bleak and emotionless.
Citizens are like puppets that only smile to convince the audience that they are alive. It s all too true
that Endora is like dancing without music.
However, Gilbert s whole life is flipped upside down when a petite traveler catches his eye and opens
his heart. Becky.
This boy s life is surrounded by people that expect all too much from him and harshly judge him when
he doesn t meet their expectations.
Becky is quite the opposite. She flutters in, bringing all the hope and happiness back into Gilbert s not
so peppy life, which changes him forever.
Gilbert but a tame tiger, and Endora his cage. Endora itself holds him in because he is much like glue

Creative Commons America Needs Fair Use Licenses
It s likely happened to you before, you turn on your radio, or favorite music video network and begin
listening to a song by some hot new pop starlet, hip hop superstar, or aging rocker. The beat is catchy,
inviting, and oddly familiar, almost too familiar in fact. You may think, Didn t David Bowie, or, hmm,
wasn t it that guy from Queen that played this riff in like ten years ago? Who is this Vanilla Ice guy
and why is he rapping over it? If you were old enough to remember Under Pressure and subsequently

Thankfully, a solution called Creative Commons has been developed which addresses many of these
issues in an effort to encourage new creative development through the open sharing of intellectual
property. (Lessig)
There are many issues with the current copyright laws that exist in the Canada and the United States
today. Many critics of these laws like, Creative Commons founder Lawrence Lessig; believe that
current copyright laws only exist to protect entrenched, and often uncreative interests at the expense of
everyone else. (Plotkin) In the United States, back in 1790, copyright extended for 14 years after the
document was published, and then for another 14 years if the author was still alive. (Plotkin) Today
copyright laws in the US have been lengthened to 70 years after the death of the author, which means
that companies can withhold releasing works into the public domain for almost a century. (Plotkin) In
Canada copyright laws are similar, but instead of 70 years after death, an authors works are released
into the public domain 50 years after their death. (Harris) Lessig has stated in interviews that current
copyright and patent practices are contrary to the reason why they were developed in the first place.
(Plotkin) They were

Lakhani SECTION 4 Final Civics Essay June 6th, 2011 Shakir M. Lakhani Topic: Senate Reform Do you feel your government is fair? Does it manage the issues properly, with careful thought, and an open, objective mind? Is it effective? Do you feel that the Senate is a sober chamber of second thought? Do you feel that the best interests of the Canadian public are always preserved in the current model of our governance? If so, you re mistaken. In terms of the reform option, as a country, we absolutely cannot afford to abolish the Senate, as it serves as, and is meant to be, a body of un biased economic and social élite , who are capable of making/approving decisions to benefit the citizens of Canada, rather than the House of Commons, which makes decisions by majority, and in their own interest. The Senate is meant to play a neutral role, to be the final judge to make the un biased, informed decisions. Sometimes, the Senate has taken on other roles, which it performs and works with very effectively. In fairness to them, these often do not receive much media coverage, increasing the public perception that Senators do very little. For example, the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science, and Tech released a report on the Health Care system, a month before the Romanow Report on Human Health Resources Planning. They have also researched issues such as poverty in Canada, and legalizing Marijuana. No matter which angle one looks at this from, the effective existence of the Senate is necessary to stabilize the government, as it is near to impossible to have an ideal House of Commons, as confirmed by an English political journalist Walter Bagehot. He wrote about the British parliamentary System (which our system is based off), and was quoted saying, If we had an ideal House of Commons...

Marketing Process Of Any Product Or Service The marketing process of any product or service begins with potential consumers; it is a customer centric environment which primary function seeks to fulfil the needs and wants of each individual customer (Sheth, Sisodia, Sharma, 2000, p.55). It is these wants that marketers have to identify and manipulate to turn them into a need and subsequently a sale, people have narrow, basic needs but almost unlimited wants (Kotler, Armstrong, Wong, Saunders, 2008, p.9). The Pyramids Centre , uses multiple segmentation through use of a range of gym memberships so they can specifically tailor a marketing strategy for each sub group, in this example the target group refers to their student membership offer. Characteristics of this group would primarily be highlighted as low income and the service being offered may not be a need or even seen as an important want , so it may seem difficult to appeal to this market. However according to Kotler (1980, p.78) a segment must be sufficiently large and with more than 20,000 students living in the city centre it would be essential to identify the student population as potential consumers; this has been implemented through allowing a somewhat exclusive and cheaper deal for students only which allows for the service to appear more lucrative. A successful organisation however will not just appeal to one segment of the market, Marketers often use multiple segmentation bases in an effort to identify smaller, better defined target groups (Kotler Armstrong, 2011). Another form of segmentation which a company can appeal to relates to location; geographic segmentation occurs to attract customers in their immediate surroundings and is a technique shown by the the Pyramids Centre, The rationale behind this approach is that people who ... • 10. What Is A Social Surrogacy Hypothesis Positive effects[edit] Social Surrogacy Hypothesis[edit] Current research is discovering that individuals suffering from social isolation can employ television to create what is termed a parasocial or faux relationship with characters from their favorite television shows and movies as a way of deflecting feelings of loneliness and social deprivation.[1] Just as an individual would spend time with a real person sharing opinions and thoughts, pseudo relationships are formed with TV characters by becoming personally invested in their lives as if they were a close friend [1] so that the individual can satiate the human desire to form meaningful relationships and establish themselves in society. Jaye Derrick and Shira Gabriel of the University of Buffalo, and Kurt Hugenberg of Miami University found that when an individual is not able to participate in interactions with real people, they are less likely to indicate feelings of loneliness when watching their favorite TV show.[2] They refer to this finding as the Social Surrogacy Hypothesis.[1] Furthermore, when an event such as a fight or argument disrupts a personal relationship, watching a favorite TV show was ... His class had no idea what they became until the end of the experiment. This raises the question: How can you tell whether or not something is wrong with society? Now, obviously the whole something is wrong with society boils down to nothing more than an opinion, so as a way to measure it, I will focus on societies that are largely believed and generally accepted to be corrupt, so as much as I d love to talk about how screwed up our current society is, because I m in the unfortunate minority, I d have to stick with the Nazi regime and fictional governments. I will be presenting three different corrupt policies for each argument: Fahrenheit 451 society, another fictional society, and real society The first sign that a government or society is corrupt is cruel or unusual punishment. Governments that punish those that have committed crimes that present no right to be punished. In Fahrenheit 451 , the greatest look we ever get at their punishment (besides the burning houses) is what happened to the poor chap minding his own business. Jehu did not follow God with all of his heart, and did not fully purge the kingdom of idols, as a result, the next four generations of kings under the line of Jehu did evil in the sight of the Lord (2 Kings 13:2, 11; 14:24; ... • 24. Improving The Mortality And Morbidity Of Cardiovascular... 1. Innovation to improve the mortality and morbidity of cardiovascular disease in developing countries may involve new surgical procedures, new implants and pacemakers, coronary artery bypasses, surgical treatments for Atrial fibrillation, repair of congenital heart defects, heart transplants, aortic arteries repair, replacement or repair of heart valves, and aneurysm repair (Hsieh, Chang, Lee, Chen, Chan, 2012). Moreover, the innovation involves the integration of computer charting and data collection. This may involve a computer based data registry that is responsible of storing patient related data. Developing countries are stepping away from the pen and paper charting system to a more sophisticated computerized system (Hsieh et al., 2012). This will allow for better tracking and follow up of complicated cases. Moreover, technological advances in imaging, screening, and diagnosing methods may also help reduce morbidity and mortality related to cardiovascular disease. Developing countries are now able to conduct ECG s, stress monitoring, heart changes monitoring, radiological procedures, and labs that could target specific cardiac markers Hsieh et al., 2012). 2. Tobacco use kills millions of people each year. Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer (CDC, 2011). Tobacco control and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommended the implementation of smoke free policies to decrease the dangers of second hand smoking and smoke exposure (WHO, 2015). The IOM ... • 25. Examples Of St. Petersburg Paradox 2.2.6 The Bernoulli Hypothesis Daniel Bernoulli, the 18th century Swiss mathematician evinced great interest in the problem known as St. Petersburg paradox and tried to resolve this. Bernoulli establish that Russians were reluctant to make bets even at better than 50 50 odds knowing wholly that their mathematical expectations of winning money in a particular kind of gamble were greater the more money they bet. This contradiction is known as St. Petersburg Paradox. St. Petersburg paradox denotes to the problem why most people are unenthusiastic to take part in a fair bet or game. For example, offer of participating in a gamble in which a person has even chance (that is, 50 50 odds) of winning or losing £1000 is a fair game. To explain it, Bernoulli ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since the individual behaves on the basis of expected utility from the extra money if he wins a game and the marginal utility of money to him declines as he has extra money, most individuals will not play the game , that is, will not make a bet. It is in this way that Bernoulli resolved St. Petersburg paradox . A graphic illustration will make clear Bernoulli s solution to the paradox. Consider Figure 17.1 in which on the X axis, the quantity of money (thousands of rupees) and on the Y axis, marginal utility of money (rupees) to an individual are measured. Suppose an individual has 20 thousands of rupees with him and can make a bet at even odd (i.e., 50 50 chance) of winning or losing rupees one thousand. If he wins the bet, money with him will rise to 21 thousand (20 + 1) rupees. If as a result of an increase in money with him, his expected marginal utility of money declines, then the expected marginal utility of extra one thousand rupees to him which is depicted by the rectangle CDFE is less than the extra marginal utility of the previous one thousand (i.e., 20th thousand) rupees which is measured by the rectangle ... • 26. The Dramatic Significance of Act 3 Scene 4 of The Banquet... The Dramatic Significance of Act 3 Scene 4 of The Banquet Scene of William Shakespeare s Macbeth Throughout this scene we can see that both versions have been created to show the best interpretation of the play Macbeth. Polanski s version is more realistic but I feel that it does not show the play in the way in which Shakespeare had intended as this version was created by a film producer who had added extra scenes and changed lines for some of the characters. He also used special effects which made the play more of a viewing pleasure and helped create the realistic effect. The BBC version is less realistic as it was a low budget production and was stage produced. In this production there where no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Polanski s film, there is much more artistic license because the film isn t faced with the restrictions that a stage production is. As such, the banquet hall is well lit and the hall is filled with guests and slaves. Also there is bear bating in a characterisation of line 100, Approach thou like the rugged Russian bear . This is proof of the greater artistic license that Polanski s version has, as they can even have live animals on set. A close up of Macbeth is used at this point showing him enjoying the scene, and this portrays the savagery of the human world. Macbeth is characterised as weaker than in the BBC version, and the actor is younger. Almost immediately the first murderer appears and starts to inform Macbeth of the murder they have committed on his behalf, in the privacy of an empty hall. The murderer tells Macbeth about how they (the murderers), dispatch d , Banquo, but how his son Fleance escaped their grasp. Macbeth is unhappy at this news ( I had else been perfect; whole as marble, founded as the rock ), but nevertheless he is pleased that Banquo is dead. • 27. Adaptation Of Lady Macbeth In his Macbeth adaptation (1971) Roman Polanski s makes various intriguing and meaningful decisions to underscore the subjects of aspiration, culpability, and the corruption related to supremacy. From his unprecedented position, the most fascinating decision was the choice to give Francesca Annis the role of Lady Macbeth. Customarily, Lady Macbeth is a more established figure in the story, and her control over Macbeth is that of a solid willed spouse. Be that as it may, by making a 26 year old physically alluring woman perform Lady Macbeth, Polanski is able to affect Lady Macbeth and her maneuvers with an extra layer of enticement. This can be analytical, in light of the fact that while the underlying motivation for Macbeth s conquest is surely given by the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His aspiration is mainly to satisfy her and fulfill his maximum capacity in her eyes. Besides, in this renowned, Out, damned spot sleepwalking scene where Lady Macbeth can not clean her hands from nonexistent blood, Polanski has Francesca Annis play the scene completely naked. This gives weakness and impotence to Lady Macbeth, a truly appalling sight given the past manifestations of her mettle. Here, we see this solid, attractive woman lose countenance before our eyes, and our sentiments for her turn to pity. Her nakedness, effectively represents the stripping away of her act. Obviously, her prayers to the spirits were not fulfilled, as she is troubled by sentiments of regret. The scene is brimming with incongruity as she has experienced a complete inversion of her previous, false self. Rather than longing for darkness, she now has light by her continually . While she derided at Macbeth s terror of the blood he had on his hands, saying a little water was all that was required, she is presently compulsively cleaning her hands, visualizing they are deeply embedded with blood: here s the smell of the blood ... Another questionable problem with the evidence was that the child was pinned into his crib so that he wouldn t move at night and somehow, when the child was abducted, whomever took him, didn t move the pins or even touch the pins to get him out of the bed. There were no fingerprints on the ladder, not even where the person that made the ladder would have left fingerprints, showing that everything had been wiped clean. Then there was the ransom note that was written with grave misspellings and horrible Germanic construction. The next question involved is with the courts, the adjudication, arraignment and the preliminary hearing. Throughout all of the investigations, they came down with one principle suspect. A Bronx carpenter by the name of Bruno Richard Hauptmann. He passed a $10 gold certificate at a gas station from the ransom money and this led to his subsequent arrest, trial and finally the death penalty. Ultimately, the police found about $14,000 or more of the ransom money at the suspect s home. In newspapers, the case appeared open and shut. Pinatubo Of 1991 Research Paper Some volcanoes cause tons of hot lava, poisonous gas, and ash that has the ability to travel hundreds of miles, destroying businesses, homes, animals, people, and frankly everything in its path, some volcanoes can erupt and leave nothing behind. On the other hand, there are eruptions that are mild and have minor eruptions which do not cause such harm as the major eruptions. When a volcano erupts the gases, vapors, and ash is injected into the stratosphere and forms a veil. The pollution in the air from the volcanic eruption was noted to have affected the radiation transfer in the atmosphere. Lamb 1970, found that there was a decrease in direct solar radiation and an increase in diffusion in the year following an eruption, and if the dust veil was large there may also be a lowering of surface temperatures. (Lamb 1970) The most well studied eruption was the Mt Pinatubo eruption of 1991, although not the largest in history. The Pinatubo eruption produced an estimated peak aerosol mass loading of 30 x 1012 g or 30 Tg, making it the largest measured injection into the stratosphere in the 20th century (McCormick and Viega 1992). This eruption ejected high levels of SO2 and as measured by the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) was found to be 20Tg (Bluth 2003). Figure 1 shows the movement of the sulfur aerosols throughout April 1991 through January 1994. The transport of gases was very rapid south across the equator with this eruption due to the meridional circulations not previously seen in other eruptions such as El Chichón. In a study done by Young et. al. 1994 found that the southward transport of aerosol measured with the satellites SAGE II and ISAMS (Grainger 1993) were caused by local heating which induced this circulation. • 30. Contributions Of Louisa May Alcott Good books, like good friends, are few and chosen; the more select, the more enjoyable Louisa May Alcott. There are so many novels that have changed American literature because of their authors. One of which is Louisa May Alcott. Examples of her work consist of Little Women, Hospital Sketches, Little Men, and so many more. These novels all have their own personal story and genre. Although Alcott was raised in poverty, she proved to be an incredibly inspiring American author because of her realism and the variety of her writing. May Alcott was a passionate, driven lady that was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, on November 29th, 1832. Her family and friends consisted of, Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Theodore Parker (Louisa 1). These wise, educated men were Alcott s mentors growing up. She looked up to them for their knowledge of academics. She, herself, was educated by her father, Amos Alcott until 1848 (Louisa 1). She got some of her inspiration for her writing growing up. Some influences of her writing came from being ...a nurse during the Civil War (Kellman 39). This tramatic experience gave her audience a unique perspective and it also helped the story seem sensible. Her audience felt like they were actually at war because of her talent in writing literature. Also, her experiences with poverty provided not only content and substance of much of her later writing..
