Operant Learning Punishment
Operant learning was created and researched by Edward Thorndike and B.F. Skinner in the early to
middle 1900s. Operant learning is a type of learning that is controlled by
consequences(reinforcement). These consequences can include a punishment or even a reward that
reinforces a behavior. When a reinforcement is provided it is proven that a behavior will increase. In
operant learning, there are four different types of consequences: positive punishment, negative
punishment, positive reinforcement, and negative reinforcement. A positive or negative punishment
will always decrease an unwanted behavior. The only difference between the two is in positive
punishment something is added, and in negative punishment something unpleasant is removed. An
example of positive punishment would be spanking a child, and an example of negative punishment
would be losing money to a swear jar. The last two forms of consequences are positive and negative
reinforcement. Reinforcement always increases the desired behavior. In positive reinforcement,
something pleasant is added and in negative reinforcement something unpleasant is taken away. An
example of positive reinforcement would be a teacher complimenting students after a correct answer,
and an example of negative reinforcement would be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the behavior is not decreased then the consequence was not a punishment. Positive and negative
reinforcement will always increase a behavior. If the reinforcement does not elicit an increase in the
desired behavior it is not a reinforcement. In order to make punishment and reinforcement most effect
I must punish/reinforce immediately following the behavior and I must create a schedule for
punishment/reinforcement and remain consistent. Immediate response combined with a consistent
schedule should have the students whipped into shape in no time. Operant learning can be very
beneficial in a classroom setting or even in everyday

A Brief Note On Tackle Complex Policy Issues
The most interesting part of the article to me is how it explains how to tackle complex policy issues
and exactly what the hardest problems are to agree on how to mitigate/combat most efficiently. The
paper discusses the most complex policy issues and their characteristics, how to tackle them with
possible strategies, avoiding the narrow approach and instead the need for flexible approaches, the
importance of working across organisation boundaries, reviewing the framework, effectively engaging
with stakeholders, and the importance of achieving behaviour change within the citizens. I have not
come across anything similar to this before, and so I feel indifferent towards the attitude of the paper; I
was neither surprised nor confronted by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Discussion: Public transport services can have social and environmental impacts; these include air and
noise pollution, land disturbance (train tracks), and traffic congestion. According to the Australian
Bureau of Statistics (2003), there is concern that current technology for powering transport systems
may be unsustainable in the long term , which is why funding is needed to upgrade to renewable trains
and trams. Although public transport emits carbon dioxide (CO2), the emission is significantly lower
compared to private vehicles; public transport such as trains use 2%, whilst private vehicles (cars) use
43% (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2003).
Resources required: According to the Government of South Australia in Department of Planning,
Transport, and Infrastructure (n.d.), recent upgrades to one of the train lines to be electrified cost $2
billion. It is expected other lines will estimate to cost around the same budget.
Risks: The risks associated with this proposal revolve around political, legal, economic, and
environmental risks. Recently, Adelaide Metro employees were on strike due to low pay; if the
Government were to build more train tracks and improve the services by creating more routes, the
employees may go on strike again, creating a political and legal risk. An economic risk is

Democratic Government Vs Mexico Research Paper
A democratic government has always proved to be effective in more prosperous than other
governments. Although this is true, many efforts have to be made in order for it to be successful. The
founding fathers of the democratic government of each country have to have the knowledge and
resources that are vital for building this type of government. After establishing this government, the
advancement and maintaining of this government have to have a stable environment. The stable
environment includes many essential elements. Education and literacy are vital for this because you
need to be able to learn and read to make educated decisions. The political knowledge that is in the

Income Base Apportionment Formula
Mission: To assess current expense apportionment calculations in comparison to income base
apportionment, GCFA (as charged by the 2012 General Conference) presents the attached information
for review. Current Apportionment Formula: Currently, conference s net expenditures calculate
apportionment amounts. In theory, all 501(c)3 entities like The United Methodist Church should give
an estimate of local church expenses equal to their income. To define the apportionable amount, Net
Expenses (E) expresses the total church expenses less deductions: benevolent giving, capital
expenditures, payments to debt, and a portion of apportionments paid to the conference. Next, the
Base Rate percentage (p), approved by General Conference, is summed with the i factor (i) and finally
multiplied by Net Expenses (E) to define conference apportionments. The Formula is expressed
below: A = E * (p + i) Method: Charged by the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Conferences with higher than average income, either grow or give at a higher than average rate.
Changing to an income base expense model will cut their ability to give. Thus, redistribution would
come at the cost of previous growth and giving. Summary: GCFA s review of an income base model
illustrates the feasibility of a simplistic and transparent apportionment formula. While the idea behind
an income base model remains relevant, the practicality and feasibility of its implementation is
reduced by its abilities to work best through complexity. Thus, if the income base model works best
through complexity and if the main idea behind the change was for a simplistic model, then why
change the model? Variance of Models: This report focuses on the variances between an income base
model and an expense base model. Listed below are an explanation of each model and the factors that
affect them. For all income base models, Statistical Table 3 accounts for income used for annual

San Joaquin River Project Analysis
Should California spent a heavy amount of money on a River Project?
This project is called the San Joaquin River Restoration. They had to rebuild the river so that the
salmon and fishes can swim back and forth. It cost them only $400 dollars to rebuild the dry river.I
agree with Daniel Weintraub because he s been the public affairs columnist for the editorial pages of
Sacramento Bee since November 2000. Daniel Weintraub has been covering California politics and a
public policy for 22 years, also including the last 18 years in Sacramento. I choose this statement
because I think California should invest money in this project because it can help us in many ways and
so that we can have a better economy. The Sacramento Bee, April 26,2009 is the newspaper where this
article was published in. I believe the SJRP was worth the $400 dollars because of the experts that
supported the numerous studies that proved it would work and help California and the positive impact
this project would have on people emotionally. I strongly agree with this San Joaquin River Project
because it can help and benefit people in many great ways. For example the San Joaquin River is
critical to revitalizing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are two major big problems with the legislation. One, it s tied to putting down the salmon back
in the river. The second problem, there is no funding for dams or river recirculation technology that
would maximize Sierra water runoff and lessen the economic devastation to some San Joaquin Valley
farmers. Also they should fight for what they want and pay the money to make the new project
because it would make a better economy. My arguments opposing toward them is strongly correct and

Metaphors In The Windup Girl
Patricia Cornwell once said, The root of all evil is abuse of power . In Bacigalupi s novel, The Windup
Girl, the author exposes the Thailand government and food companies to be evil due to their abuse of
power which led to the destruction of Thailand. Controlled by greed, these groups fought amongst
each other for control over Thailand s seedbank, using any means necessary to complete their goal. As
a result, citizens and civilians living in the country got involved in the fighting. Through the use of
metaphor, setting, and character, Bacigalupi expresses the message that social injustice endured by the
many is often the result of an abuse by the few, showing in this case that it was the actions of the
government and food companies that were the cause for the hardships endured by the many. Paulo
Bacigalupi uses metaphor in his novel to help the reader comprehend exactly what he is talking about.
Gibbons, a talented generipper, said that, We are nature. Our every tinkering is nature, our every
biological striving (243). In this situation, Bacigalupi is using Gibbons to represent generippers around
the world. They believe they are justified because the ability to genetically modify species was
something nature allowed them to learn. This infers the lack of care powerful groups such as the food
companies have for the rest of the world. Bacigalupi evidently conveys how this lack of care is utterly
responsible for the amount of social injustice experienced by many around

Entrepreneurs Are Not Made They Are Born
Introduction
Entrepreneur is the person who starts business individual and takes risk as he is the responsible for
business success and fail. One who starts or assumes control of a business or other independent
enterprise, often employing innovation and more than an ordinary degree of risk.

An individual who, rather than working as an employee, runs a small business and assumes all the risk
and reward of a given business venture, idea, or good or service offered for sale. The entrepreneur is
commonly seen as a business leader and innovator of new ideas and business processes.

Entrepreneurship and firm creation generate jobs
The creations of new businesses and the contraction or exit of less productive firms are key elements
in the dynamism of modern economies. New firms attract resources to new activities, and when they
prosper and are able to grow rapidly, they generate significant numbers of new jobs. Empirical work at
the OECD indicates that entry of new firms in most countries is similar to exit of existing firms, and
perhaps surprisingly, there do not appear to be great differences in entry and exit rates across
countries. On the other hand, young firms seem likely to grow

Geert Hofstede s Five Dimensions of National Culture -...
Throughout history to present day, Australian culture has become the product of a distinct blend of
established traditions and new influences. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the
country s original inhabitants, created the foundation for the land s cultural traditions over 40,000
years ago. In addition, the rest of Australia s people are migrants or descendants of migrants from
various other countries who transported their own customs, beliefs, and value systems to the land. As a
result, Australia s culture has significantly broadened its social and cultural profile over the years, and
still continues to evolve today.
A key component of Australian culture today is not only their diversity, but more importantly, the ...

While family is important there is great importance placed on individual accomplishments. This is
also highlighted in political and economic traditions of the United States, where the pursuit of self
interest leads to economic success and is better for the individual and society as a whole.
Both countries rank lower than the world average of 55 on the Power Distance Index. The United
States, like Australia, has greater equality between social levels and there is equal opportunity for
individuals to rise. The ranking is representative in individuals that have the ability to express ideas
and opinions to those at higher power levels and the different levels being open to communication and
allowing for cooperation.
The world average for the Masculinity Dimension is 50, with both the United States and Australia
having a higher ranking. Traits associated with masculinity are assertiveness, material success, and
individual achievement. The female population has adapted these traits and begun to shift toward a
more traditional male role, with an increasing number of women continuing to enter the workforce.
The direct communication style of the United States illustrates the masculine traits. The U.S. places
heavy emphasis on getting their point across rather than getting to know those they are doing business
with. This dimension is closely related to both countries rankings in the individuality dimension.
When comparing the dimension of long term orientation both the

Male Sexual Enhancement Research Paper
Male sexual enhancement products are oftentimes confused with products of penis enlargement. Due
to this mistake, loads of skepticism exists regarding whether the male enhancement products
practically work.
Supplements for sexual improvement have a greater effect compared to penis enlargement since they
can refine everything regarding male sexual performance not penis size. Anyways, throughout
erections, it is the penis s corpora cavernosa that gets filled up with blood. Blood amount that this
membrane accepts and the amount of time it accepts it will determine how tough an erection will be
and how long it will last. Now pay attention please. Men get left with weak erections that lack in
performance, for loads of age.
The corpora cavernosa could virtually lose its overall force to absorb this blood influx. Unusual

Ed Gein Essay
This paper is based on the life of Ed Gein. He was an unusual character, born on a farm, and raised by
a religious crazy, domineering mother. In the space of a few years his entire family passed away and
he was left to take care of his farm all by himself. In the next few years he became a grave robber, a
necrophiliac, a cannibal, and also took up arts and crafts in body parts. He is known as one of the
weirdest serial killers of the twentieth century. He also inspired movies like Psycho, Silence of The
Lambs, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

than 12 feet away from his mother s grave.
Over the next 10 years Ed did the same thing look up obituaries in the local newspaper and dig up
fresh corpses on a full moon. He would take the whole corpse or just the parts that he needed at the
time.
His experiments with dead bodies were bizarre. He would construct objects with the bones and skin
and the organs and meats were stored in the fridge to eat and give as fresh venison to his neighbors.
He would commit acts of necrophilia on the bodies. He even dug up his own mother s corpse!

female corpses and familiarize himself with its anatomy. The closest he got was to wear a full body
suit made of women skin, breasts and face included.
His collections of trophies got larger, and so did the range of his experimentation and obsession. Gus
was then taken to an asylum, and Ed was then left alone again. Ed thought that fresher bodies would

The Theme Of Antisemitism In Night Of Surrender
I think Night of Surrender serves to showcase the difficulty Holocaust survivors faced when
attempting to transition back into the regular world. This tension faced by all Jewish survivors after
World War 2 is the central theme of the story. We see the female protagonist struggle with trying to
find happiness after staying relatively safe during the Holocaust. I should be happy to have survived,
but I wasn t happy, and I was upset to be so sad (Fink 93). The woman cannot seem to escape her past
even on such a celebratory night the night of the surrender. She goes on to reveal herself as Jewish and
talks about her struggle with her significant other Mike, saying Do you know what it means to live in
fear, lying, never speaking your own language. Or thinking with your own brain, or looking with your
own eyes? (Fink 100). I think Fink is showing us that it s easy to think liberation brought about pure
happiness for the Jewish people which enabled them to live happy fulfilling lives, however many were
hurt emotionally beyond repair by the Nazi regime. What most startles me about this piece is the idea
that even after the war people felt as if they had to hide their Jewish faith out of fear of Antisemitism. I
liked how this story showcased the different viewpoints on Judaism during the time. While
Antisemitism thrived in Europe, Mike who was an American didn t seem to care at all that Ann was
Jewish. The quote I think is worth discussing is when Ann states My knowledge of

Furthermore, Shakespeare portrays a parallel situation for Laertes just as Fortinbras and Hamlet, after
the death of Polonius. Laertes is a young Danish lord and with his sister Ophelia, he is the son of

comes more considerably than that to Hamlet and Laertes. The contrasts between their response from

discussing his objectives, Polonius hides himself behind the arras in Gertrude s room. It is where

Low Level Laser Therapy on Adhesive Capsulitis Adhesive capsulitis is a problem that therapeutic
ultrasound, low level laser therapy, inferential current, TENS, and pulsed electromagnetic field

The Benefits and Problems of Migration in the UK
Should the UK Government control migration? Some believe that it is necessary to control migration
in the UK, as they believe that too many immigrants could lead to overpopulation, unemployment and
housing shortages. It is commonly believed that migration should be controlled, as migrants come
over to our country and take our benefits ; however this is not necessarily factually correct. This essay
aims to discuss the benefits and problems of migration in the UK, and make a conclusion based on the
evidence I have discussed, about whether migration should or should not be controlled by the UK
Government. The UK s post war immigrants came mainly from Colonies in the Caribbean, India,
Bangladesh and Pakistan. An act of parliament meant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are worries that migrants are stealing UK jobs , as there is already an unemployment problem in
the UK. Some people believe that we need to focus on getting jobs for those who are already citizens
of the UK, rather than bringing more people in from different countries and getting them jobs. People
also worry that public money has to be spent on meeting the everyday needs of the immigrants and
their families, for example housing, schools and healthcare. Many UK citizens are not in permanent
housing as of yet due to the fact that there is a shortage of council owned houses, therefore we should
perhaps focus on permanently housing those who like in the UK before allowing migrants to live in
council owned houses. If the country goes into another recession, then the immigrants will add to the
burden of unemployment. Many people worry that migrants will come to the UK in order to receive
benefits. This is a big worry for some people, as it is well needed government money from their taxes
giving the migrants benefits, which they believe could be put to better use. People also worry that the
migrants avoid paying taxes as they have such low paid jobs, which makes some people angry as they
have to pay such high taxes on their wages. Some people worry that migration means that we are

Blue Planet Research Paper
The Blue Planet: Seasonal Seas
Like how seasons are the changes on land, they can also be apply to oceans in temperate latitudes. The
most productive seas on the planet are the seasonal seas because they border the temperate parts of the
world where conditions change throughout the year. The power of the sun is constantly changing;
hence there are different seasons even under the seas due to the different in sunlight radiation. In the
far north, summers are warm and gentle, while winters are wracked by savage storms. Sable Island,
southeast of Nova Scotia in the Atlantic Ocean is home to the world s largest colony of gray seal,
about 100,000 seals come to breed here each year. The climate at this location is heavily influenced by
the sea and being located in the path of major frontal storms and cyclones, precipitation is high.

Personality Analysis of Charles Manson
PERSONALITY ANALYSIS OF CHARLES MANSON Introduction Manson is a convicted serial
killer who has become an icon of evil. In the late 1960s, Manson founded a hippie cult group known
as the Family whom he manipulated into brutally killing others on his behalf. Helter Skelter, Manson
believed, was going to occur in the summer of 1969 when blacks were going to rise up and slaughter
all the white people. He told his followers that they would be saved because they would go

With a mere 275 horsepower it was outperformed by all competition. Along with the dreadful
horsepower, Ford owners complained that the trucks they purchased yielded inadequate miles per
gallon (Powerstrokehub). To compensate for both these issues, for introduces a much higher pressure
fuel delivery system that would allow for the cleaner burning of fuel and overall less fuel needed to
run the engine. Ford and International Navistar also introduced a newly designed smart turbocharger.
This allowed the turbo housing to expand and contract depending on the throttle position (Truck

gain and output resulting in better fuel economy. Tighter machining tolerances were also implied for
almost all of the engine components that went into the 6.0l Powerstroke allowing grater compression
of the engine and mitigating areas where oil, air or fuel could leak out under high pressures. With all
of these changes implemented that new 6.0l Powerstroke engine boasted a whopping 325 horsepower

Surgical Smoke Essay
Abstract
Surgical smoke is generated during the cutting or coagulation of tissue by a wide variety of devices
including laser, vessel sealing devices and electro cautery. Quantity of smoke generated is variable
based on the amount of tissue, open or closed procedure, device utilized and functional temperature of
the device. The contents of the smoke generated contain numerable volatile organic compounds.
Several carcinogenic particles have been isolated in surgical smoke. Both viral and bacterial
components have been identified in smoke particles. The size of particles in surgical smoke is
predominantly smaller than 2.5µM. Inhaled small particles have known negative health effects. Smoke
temperature was not identified as an evaluated vector of risk in the literature. The literature does not
definitively link surgical smoke exposure to injury or disease. Preventing workplace exposure to
tobacco smoke has reduced mortality. Operating room personnel are likely at risk from chronic
exposure to toxins, small particle inhalation and possible infectious transmissions from smoke. Smoke

Summary Of Globalization
Globalization Textbook Readings (Chapters 19 20) Chapter nineteen elaborates on the big picture of
globalization and discusses the many definitions; contested meanings; and both cultural and economic
aspects of the term. In this chapter, the authors argue that defining the term globalization is difficult,
and stress the importance of understanding the spatial and temporal aspects that parallel its
geographical scope. Furthermore, this chapter emphasizes that globalization is more than
understanding global, national, regional, and local relationships; it is also critical to consider the
uneven development, networks, flows, and interconnectedness in the world. In Key Concepts of
Geography (KCG), chapter twenty discusses aspects of globalization that relate to the physical and
environmental sciences. The chapter emphasizes four key themes related to this: (1) the technologies
for enhancing scientific knowledge; (2) the role physical geographers and environmental scientists
have in the politicization of the environment; (3) the relationship of physical geography with science
and related activity; and (4) the historical and contemporary nature of physical geography. Chapter
twenty also mentions the globalization syndrome and highlights the relationship between politics,
environment, and development; the participation of geography within modern conservation efforts and
historical resource exploitation; and the difficulties that geography has had with concepts which
integrate a wide range of different knowledge of the world. Both chapters address the broadness of
globalization, but chapter twenty stresses that it is not a term which has been frequently applied in the
environmental and physical sciences and it certainly has a place there. In contrast to this, chapter
nineteen places much emphasis on the social aspects of globalization. While this is a notable
difference, both chapters nineteen and twenty do acknowledge temporal and spatial factors, and also
the interconnectedness that globalization often attempts to define.

Analysis Of Sunset Blvd And The Great Gatsby By F....
Growing up, Americans begin to form dreams, or goals, based on where they want to go in life. These
dreams may change over time, or remain the same, but they are always the focus of an American s
life. However, there comes a point in life when you must decide whether to continue chasing your
dream or to face reality and give up and illusions you may have about your life. The plot of two
American based stories, Sunset Blvd , directed by Billy Wilder, and The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott
Fitzgerald, revolve around this conflict of illusion, or dreams, against reality and facing the facts of
life. Both Sunset Blvd and The Great Gatsby ultimately side with illusion and dreaming over reality, a
decision which becomes solidified by the closing scenes in both tales, and the death of a main
character.
Sunset Blvd is not subtle in stating illusion will win out over reality. After all, Norma Desmond, the
aged silent movie star who deludes herself into believing that she will be famous again, kills Joe
Gillis, our involved narrator and voice of reason. But before we analyze the dramatic pool scene,
which dispels any idea that Sunset Blvd sides with reality, we must first look at the characters, the
embodiments of dreams and of reality in this movie. Norma Desmond, who dreams of rising to
greatness again, refuses to believe that time has passed and that she no longer has any fans. Max, her
butler and first husband, feeds into this facade by writing her fan mail, encouraging her

The Witch s Hammer Summary
The Witch s Hammer, or The Malleus Maleficarum, was first published in 1487 in Germany. In
German language it is called the Hexenhammer. It served as a guidebook for Inquisitors during
Inquisition. With the help of this book they were able to identify and prosecute the Witches. It was
written by the Dominican monks Heinrich Kramer and presumably also James Sprenger, who
assembled many fairy tales and magic stories, nightmares, hearsay, confessions and accusations and
put this all together as factual information. It is still not completelly confirmed, that Sprenger was
actually one of the authors.

the Malleus Maleficarum as false.
The book has three sections the first one is theoreticall, discussing the question of whether witchcraft
is real or imaginary. It concludes, that it is real, because Devil is real. Witches have an essential link
with the Devil, which allow them the power to perform harmful magical acts. In section two, matters
of practice and actual cases are discussed. It covers also remedies to prevent witchcraft and how to

Ill Health Rates of Indigenous Australians
As health professionals, we must look beyond individual attributes of Indigenous Australians to gain a
greater understanding and a possible explanation of why there are such high rates of ill health issues
such as alcoholism, depression, abuse, shorter life expectancy and higher prevalence of diseases
including diabetes, heart disease and obesity in our indigenous population. Looking at just the
individual aspects and the biomedical health model, we don t get the context of Aboriginal health.
This is why we need to explore in further detail what events could have created such inequities in
Aboriginal health. Other details that we should consider are the historical and cultural factors such as,

As the English population began to increase, Aboriginal people were moved into missions in 1810, so
the population could be manages and they were taught the European ways so they could be used as
low paid labours, border lining slaves (Creative Spirits, 2002). When the Aboriginal people failed to
move to Christianity and civilised life, the Europeans thought it was due to the lack of intellectual
ability because they didn t understand the complexity and holding power of the traditional culture and
religion to the Aboriginals (Psychology and Indigenous Australians, Foundations of Cultural
Competence, 2009, pp. 77). The separation of Aboriginals from the community into missions was
known as segregation. In the early 20th century, the Indigenous Australians all throughout the nation
were exposed to the protection legislation which in turn, denied them of their basic human rights as
well as the freedom that was demanded by every other Australian. Aboriginals were increasingly
moved of farms where they worked like slaves and put into government or church controlled reserves
where they were expected to die out (Psychology and Indigenous Australians, Foundations of Cultural

The Advance of eBusiness Essay
The Advance of eBusiness
A major societal change that has resulted from the web is the proliferation of businesses on the web
(eBusiness). Businesses on the web can be classified into two types: those who have physical stores
outside of the web (like Gap) and those that were created for the sole purpose of functioning through
the web (like eBay). According to Marshall McLuhan, in his book Understanding Media: The
Extensions of Man, once a new technology comes in a social milieu it cannot cease to permeate that
milieu until every institution is saturated (241). I believe this is exactly what the web has done to
American and international societies. The web has saturated nearly every aspect of life including
education, leisure, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead, a consumer can order items in the comfort of one s home. I believe this feature aids
individuals who are in remote places, such as small towns that do not have specific retail stores, within
reasonable driving distance. In addition, disabled persons who have difficulty traveling to stores can
shop in comfort at home, as long as the web site is compliant to disabled people. Lastly, when
shopping on the web, there is no sales tax. Even though shipping costs are added, they are sometimes
minimal or even free. From personal experience, I have learned that I can often buy an item online and
pay shipping, as it is cheaper than buying the item from a nearby store.
Negative Aspects of eBusiness
Although there are many positive aspects to having businesses on the web, negative consequences also
exist. To begin, the web is not accessible to all people. From my personal experience from technical
editing last semester, I learned that all web sites should strive to be American Disabilities Act (ADA)
compliant. Many individuals who are visually or hearing impaired cannot communicate with ease on
the web. While disabled individuals may have trouble using the web, advertising also causes potential
problems for an abundance of users. While all businesses have a common goal to make a profit,
advertising is important to promote sales. Advertising on the web has become annoying to many
people, and

Relationship Between Individual Identities And...
Our everyday behaviour, whether at work or at home is believed to be shaped through our individual
identities (Watson, 2006), however the extent to which these individual identities are shaped by the
organisation is questionable. This essay will scrutinize the relationship between individual identities
and organisational culture, looking at whether individual identities are actually shaped by the
corporate culture, whilst reflecting on whether or not experiences outside of work can also have an
influence. Firstly, looking at definitions of culture and how it controls behaviour through a soft
bureaucracy will allow the development of ideas of whether this shapes the individual identities in an
organisation in the same way that rules would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rather than using rules and acting as a bureaucracy to achieve the corporate goals, a culture aims to
act as guidance and shape the organisation almost in the way of a soft bureaucracy. Instead of
controlling employees through rules, organisational culture aims to determine the behaviour of
employees and implement control in a very subtle way (McAuley et al, 2014), to ensure that the
values and norms are consistent and behaviours are attached to meaning that reflect and pursue the
goals of the organisation. By encouraging people to become part of the culture and making goals
consistent, it brings about this idea of reshaping individuals within the work place. In this context,
individual identity refers to a work based self concept, constituted of a combination of organizational,
occupational, and other identities that shapes the roles a person adopts and the corresponding ways he
or she behaves when performing his or her work (Walsh and Gordon, 2008, p47). This highlights the
idea that in different organisations, individuals will act differently in line with either the rules the
company sets out or its culture. However, it is important to recognize that identity within the
workplace is only one aspect of an individual s identity. To further this, Watson, 2006, p96) highlights
the concept of process relational thinking and how this implies that identities are adaptable and tend to
change as the person shapes and reshapes

early Rome was simple; governed by seven kings. Soon came transition because of heavy disputes in
turn, the people of Rome gained power and ruled the city themselves. This government was short

  • 2. Operant Learning Punishment Operant learning was created and researched by Edward Thorndike and B.F. Skinner in the early to middle 1900s. Operant learning is a type of learning that is controlled by consequences(reinforcement). These consequences can include a punishment or even a reward that reinforces a behavior. When a reinforcement is provided it is proven that a behavior will increase. In operant learning, there are four different types of consequences: positive punishment, negative punishment, positive reinforcement, and negative reinforcement. A positive or negative punishment will always decrease an unwanted behavior. The only difference between the two is in positive punishment something is added, and in negative punishment something unpleasant is removed. An example of positive punishment would be spanking a child, and an example of negative punishment would be losing money to a swear jar. The last two forms of consequences are positive and negative reinforcement. Reinforcement always increases the desired behavior. In positive reinforcement, something pleasant is added and in negative reinforcement something unpleasant is taken away. An example of positive reinforcement would be a teacher complimenting students after a correct answer, and an example of negative reinforcement would be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the behavior is not decreased then the consequence was not a punishment. Positive and negative reinforcement will always increase a behavior. If the reinforcement does not elicit an increase in the desired behavior it is not a reinforcement. In order to make punishment and reinforcement most effect I must punish/reinforce immediately following the behavior and I must create a schedule for punishment/reinforcement and remain consistent. Immediate response combined with a consistent schedule should have the students whipped into shape in no time. Operant learning can be very beneficial in a classroom setting or even in everyday ... • 3. A Brief Note On Tackle Complex Policy Issues The most interesting part of the article to me is how it explains how to tackle complex policy issues and exactly what the hardest problems are to agree on how to mitigate/combat most efficiently. The paper discusses the most complex policy issues and their characteristics, how to tackle them with possible strategies, avoiding the narrow approach and instead the need for flexible approaches, the importance of working across organisation boundaries, reviewing the framework, effectively engaging with stakeholders, and the importance of achieving behaviour change within the citizens. I have not come across anything similar to this before, and so I feel indifferent towards the attitude of the paper; I was neither surprised nor confronted by ... Discussion: Public transport services can have social and environmental impacts; these include air and noise pollution, land disturbance (train tracks), and traffic congestion. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2003), there is concern that current technology for powering transport systems may be unsustainable in the long term , which is why funding is needed to upgrade to renewable trains and trams. Although public transport emits carbon dioxide (CO2), the emission is significantly lower compared to private vehicles; public transport such as trains use 2%, whilst private vehicles (cars) use 43% (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2003). Resources required: According to the Government of South Australia in Department of Planning, Transport, and Infrastructure (n.d.), recent upgrades to one of the train lines to be electrified cost $2 billion. It is expected other lines will estimate to cost around the same budget. Risks: The risks associated with this proposal revolve around political, legal, economic, and environmental risks. Recently, Adelaide Metro employees were on strike due to low pay; if the Government were to build more train tracks and improve the services by creating more routes, the employees may go on strike again, creating a political and legal risk. An economic risk is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although this is true, many efforts have to be made in order for it to be successful. The founding fathers of the democratic government of each country have to have the knowledge and resources that are vital for building this type of government. After establishing this government, the advancement and maintaining of this government have to have a stable environment. The stable environment includes many essential elements. • 5. Income Base Apportionment Formula Mission: To assess current expense apportionment calculations in comparison to income base apportionment, GCFA (as charged by the 2012 General Conference) presents the attached information for review. Current Apportionment Formula: Currently, conference s net expenditures calculate apportionment amounts. In theory, all 501(c)3 entities like The United Methodist Church should give an estimate of local church expenses equal to their income. To define the apportionable amount, Net Expenses (E) expresses the total church expenses less deductions: benevolent giving, capital expenditures, payments to debt, and a portion of apportionments paid to the conference. Next, the Base Rate percentage (p), approved by General Conference, is summed with the i factor (i) and finally multiplied by Net Expenses (E) to define conference apportionments. The Formula is expressed below: A = E * (p + i) Method: Charged by the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Conferences with higher than average income, either grow or give at a higher than average rate. Changing to an income base expense model will cut their ability to give. Thus, redistribution would come at the cost of previous growth and giving. Summary: GCFA s review of an income base model illustrates the feasibility of a simplistic and transparent apportionment formula. While the idea behind an income base model remains relevant, the practicality and feasibility of its implementation is reduced by its abilities to work best through complexity. Thus, if the income base model works best through complexity and if the main idea behind the change was for a simplistic model, then why change the model? Variance of Models: This report focuses on the variances between an income base model and an expense base model. Listed below are an explanation of each model and the factors that affect them. • 6. San Joaquin River Project Analysis Should California spent a heavy amount of money on a River Project? This project is called the San Joaquin River Restoration. They had to rebuild the river so that the salmon and fishes can swim back and forth. It cost them only $400 dollars to rebuild the dry river.I agree with Daniel Weintraub because he s been the public affairs columnist for the editorial pages of Sacramento Bee since November 2000. Daniel Weintraub has been covering California politics and a public policy for 22 years, also including the last 18 years in Sacramento. I choose this statement because I think California should invest money in this project because it can help us in many ways and so that we can have a better economy. The Sacramento Bee, April 26,2009 is the newspaper where this article was published in. I believe the SJRP was worth the $400 dollars because of the experts that supported the numerous studies that proved it would work and help California and the positive impact this project would have on people emotionally. I strongly agree with this San Joaquin River Project because it can help and benefit people in many great ways. For example the San Joaquin River is critical to revitalizing ... • 7. Metaphors In The Windup Girl Patricia Cornwell once said, The root of all evil is abuse of power . In Bacigalupi s novel, The Windup Girl, the author exposes the Thailand government and food companies to be evil due to their abuse of power which led to the destruction of Thailand. Controlled by greed, these groups fought amongst each other for control over Thailand s seedbank, using any means necessary to complete their goal. As a result, citizens and civilians living in the country got involved in the fighting. Through the use of metaphor, setting, and character, Bacigalupi expresses the message that social injustice endured by the many is often the result of an abuse by the few, showing in this case that it was the actions of the government and food companies that were the cause for the hardships endured by the many. Paulo Bacigalupi uses metaphor in his novel to help the reader comprehend exactly what he is talking about. Gibbons, a talented generipper, said that, We are nature. Our every tinkering is nature, our every biological striving (243). In this situation, Bacigalupi is using Gibbons to represent generippers around the world. They believe they are justified because the ability to genetically modify species was something nature allowed them to learn. This infers the lack of care powerful groups such as the food companies have for the rest of the world. Bacigalupi evidently conveys how this lack of care is utterly responsible for the amount of social injustice experienced by many around ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

(Kuratko, 2005, p5) Entrepreneurship and firm creation generate jobs The creations of new businesses and the contraction or exit of less productive firms are key elements in the dynamism of modern economies. New firms attract resources to new activities, and when they prosper and are able to grow rapidly, they generate significant numbers of new jobs. Empirical work at the OECD indicates that entry of new firms in most countries is similar to exit of existing firms, and perhaps surprisingly, there do not appear to be great differences in entry and exit rates across countries. • 11. Geert Hofstede s Five Dimensions of National Culture -... Throughout history to present day, Australian culture has become the product of a distinct blend of established traditions and new influences. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the country s original inhabitants, created the foundation for the land s cultural traditions over 40,000 years ago. In addition, the rest of Australia s people are migrants or descendants of migrants from various other countries who transported their own customs, beliefs, and value systems to the land. As a result, Australia s culture has significantly broadened its social and cultural profile over the years, and still continues to evolve today. A key component of Australian culture today is not only their diversity, but more importantly, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While family is important there is great importance placed on individual accomplishments. This is also highlighted in political and economic traditions of the United States, where the pursuit of self interest leads to economic success and is better for the individual and society as a whole. Both countries rank lower than the world average of 55 on the Power Distance Index. The United States, like Australia, has greater equality between social levels and there is equal opportunity for individuals to rise. The ranking is representative in individuals that have the ability to express ideas and opinions to those at higher power levels and the different levels being open to communication and allowing for cooperation. The world average for the Masculinity Dimension is 50, with both the United States and Australia having a higher ranking. Traits associated with masculinity are assertiveness, material success, and individual achievement. The female population has adapted these traits and begun to shift toward a more traditional male role, with an increasing number of women continuing to enter the workforce. The direct communication style of the United States illustrates the masculine traits. The U.S. places heavy emphasis on getting their point across rather than getting to know those they are doing business with. In the next few years he became a grave robber, a necrophiliac, a cannibal, and also took up arts and crafts in body parts. He is known as one of the weirdest serial killers of the twentieth century. The Theme Of Antisemitism In Night Of Surrender I think Night of Surrender serves to showcase the difficulty Holocaust survivors faced when attempting to transition back into the regular world. This tension faced by all Jewish survivors after World War 2 is the central theme of the story. We see the female protagonist struggle with trying to find happiness after staying relatively safe during the Holocaust. I should be happy to have survived, but I wasn t happy, and I was upset to be so sad (Fink 93). The woman cannot seem to escape her past even on such a celebratory night the night of the surrender. She goes on to reveal herself as Jewish and talks about her struggle with her significant other Mike, saying Do you know what it means to live in fear, lying, never speaking your own language. Or thinking with your own brain, or looking with your own eyes? (Fink 100). I think Fink is showing us that it s easy to think liberation brought about pure happiness for the Jewish people which enabled them to live happy fulfilling lives, however many were hurt emotionally beyond repair by the Nazi regime. What most startles me about this piece is the idea that even after the war people felt as if they had to hide their Jewish faith out of fear of Antisemitism. I liked how this story showcased the different viewpoints on Judaism during the time. While Antisemitism thrived in Europe, Mike who was an American didn t seem to care at all that Ann was Jewish. Some believe that it is necessary to control migration in the UK, as they believe that too many immigrants could lead to overpopulation, unemployment and housing shortages. People also worry that public money has to be spent on meeting the everyday needs of the immigrants and their families, for example housing, schools and healthcare. Many UK citizens are not in permanent housing as of yet due to the fact that there is a shortage of council owned houses, therefore we should perhaps focus on permanently housing those who like in the UK before allowing migrants to live in council owned houses. • 23. Summary Of Globalization Globalization Textbook Readings (Chapters 19 20) Chapter nineteen elaborates on the big picture of globalization and discusses the many definitions; contested meanings; and both cultural and economic aspects of the term. In this chapter, the authors argue that defining the term globalization is difficult, and stress the importance of understanding the spatial and temporal aspects that parallel its geographical scope. Furthermore, this chapter emphasizes that globalization is more than understanding global, national, regional, and local relationships; it is also critical to consider the uneven development, networks, flows, and interconnectedness in the world. In Key Concepts of Geography (KCG), chapter twenty discusses aspects of globalization that relate to the physical and environmental sciences. The chapter emphasizes four key themes related to this: (1) the technologies for enhancing scientific knowledge; (2) the role physical geographers and environmental scientists have in the politicization of the environment; (3) the relationship of physical geography with science and related activity; and (4) the historical and contemporary nature of physical geography. Chapter twenty also mentions the globalization syndrome and highlights the relationship between politics, environment, and development; the participation of geography within modern conservation efforts and historical resource exploitation; and the difficulties that geography has had with concepts which integrate a wide range of different knowledge of the world. Both chapters address the broadness of globalization, but chapter twenty stresses that it is not a term which has been frequently applied in the environmental and physical sciences and it certainly has a place there. In contrast to this, chapter nineteen places much emphasis on the social aspects of globalization. While this is a notable difference, both chapters nineteen and twenty do acknowledge temporal and spatial factors, and also the interconnectedness that globalization often attempts to define. These dreams may change over time, or remain the same, but they are always the focus of an American s life. However, there comes a point in life when you must decide whether to continue chasing your dream or to face reality and give up and illusions you may have about your life. The plot of two American based stories, Sunset Blvd , directed by Billy Wilder, and The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, revolve around this conflict of illusion, or dreams, against reality and facing the facts of life. Both Sunset Blvd and The Great Gatsby ultimately side with illusion and dreaming over reality, a decision which becomes solidified by the closing scenes in both tales, and the death of a main character. Sunset Blvd is not subtle in stating illusion will win out over reality. After all, Norma Desmond, the aged silent movie star who deludes herself into believing that she will be famous again, kills Joe Gillis, our involved narrator and voice of reason. But before we analyze the dramatic pool scene, which dispels any idea that Sunset Blvd sides with reality, we must first look at the characters, the embodiments of dreams and of reality in this movie. Rather than using rules and acting as a bureaucracy to achieve the corporate goals, a culture aims to act as guidance and shape the organisation almost in the way of a soft bureaucracy.
