HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is the virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). HIV targets and destroys helper T-cells, which are essential for the immune system. This leaves the body vulnerable to infections and diseases. While antiretroviral treatment can't cure HIV, it can suppress it and help people with HIV live longer, healthier lives. HIV is most often transmitted through unprotected sex with an infected person or sharing needles. Mother-to-child transmission is also possible.
