Analysis Of The New York Times By Cyra Mcfaddin
In Cyra McFaddin s article published in the New York Times titled In Defense of Gender, she asserts
that male pronouns should not be eliminated from written and spoken English works. McFaddin uses
satire in an attempt to make readers sympathetic to a writer s problem of trying to be
nondiscriminatory by using gender neutral language. Cyra McFaddin s goal is to convince readers that
gender neutral language won t solve any problems or advance feminist ideas because she believes
some take it to the extreme. She also thinks that using slashes and the term person makes the English
language sound cumbersome and will never please everyone. I disagree with McFaddin. She is quick
to criticize the progress that others are attempting to make without offering a solution to the gender
neutral language that she so despises. I believe that any progress forward is worthwhile, and accuracy
is paramount. Ultimately, everyone just wants to be included in the default. While McFaddin attempts
to use humor to cover her complaints of how bland or distracting writing seems when gender neutral
language is used, and how it doesn t aid in the development of relationships when used; inclusion of
everyone is much more valuable and worthwhile.
McFaddin makes the point that when writers use a slash in their work, it can be distracting to read
especially out loud. She does this by saying, In print, those person suffixes and he/she s jump out from
the page, as distracting as a cloud of gnats,

Love And Hate In George Orwell s 1984
Without love we tend to grow a sense of hatred within ourselves and for each other. In the novel,
1984, Big Brother is portrayed as the leader in society, symbolizing a god like figure who has total
dominance over their citizens. Therefore, the people find themselves full of hate considering their
government is controlling them. George Orwell s message in 1984 claims that a society based on hate
would not survive seeing that the people would be the cause of their own destruction.
The story 1984 focuses on a man named Winston Smith, who lives in Oceania, an imaginative
country, ruled by the Party through a totalitarianism government. In their world, people are divided by
three social groups such as the Inner Party, the Outer Party, and the Proles. ... Show more content on

In the story, the Party uses the power of hate to take advantage of the people into loving Big Brother.
For example, the point when Winston and Julia had a love affair with each other, was not only for lust
but also to rebel against their government. With regard to their love affair the novel states Not merely
the love of one person, but the animal instinct , the simple undifferentiated desire: the was the force
that would tear the Party to pieces. He pressed her down upon the grass, among the fallen bluebells.
(Orwell, 126) They were never in love because the hate they had for Big Brother is what lead them to
commit such an act. The love and friendship people have for each other in Oceania is non existent.
The Party desperately tries to erase love for anything but Big Brother from the lives of their citizens.
In doing so, they manage to place telescreens in every house, street, and public place which is a
security camera to prevent anyone from committing an act of rebellion towards Big Brother. In
addition, there is no friendship and people are forced into serving Big Brother by a selective job. In
the novel, it states The old civilizations claimed that they were founded on love and justice. Ours is
founded upon hatred. In our world there will be no emotions except fear, rage, triumph, and self
abasement. (Orwell, 267) This reveals that in their society, people are being forced to be someone they

Graff And Birkenstein s Essay They Say I Say
The article They Say I Say written by Graff and Birkenstein discusses several ways to not only write
academically but express thoughts in an academic manner. The first aspect talked about is how to
write about what others are saying. This helps clarify what exactly the author is talking about. After
you have stated what they say , you can state your own argument and tell what you agree with. Graff
and Birkenstein also state that stating your own opinion as quickly as possible is also important; this
gives the reader an understanding about the motivation of your argument is. In contrast to this article,
the article Agonism in the Academy: Surviving High Learning s Argument Culture written by Deborah
Tannen explains how agonism is like a

Christian Persecution
Christian Persecution Christians are being persecuted for their faith in more than the forty nations
around world today. In some nations, it is illegal to own a Bible, to share one s faith in Christ, and
even teach one s children about Jesus Christ. Those who boldly follow Christ, in spite of government
decree or opposition, can face harassment, arrest, torture and even death. Dr. Nhia Vang Vang, the
pastor of the First Hmong Alliance Church in Longview, NC, mentioned that Christianity has been
persecuted for over 2000 years up until now. However, more Christians have been arrested, harassed,
and persecuted in this century than in the previous nineteen combined (Vang). Christian persecution is
a world wide problem, having an effect ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pastor Bike (Pastor Zhang Mingxuan) is a missionary who travels across China on a bicycle to spread
the news of Jesus Christ. He was arrested by the Chinese officials on August 6, 2008; just two days
after the Olympics began. ( Olympic ). Mingxuan was tortured and interrogated in prison countless
times. However, regardless of the harassment by the Chinese officials, Pastor Bike continued to win
several lives for Jesus Christ. The numbers of Christian martyrs are increasing by the year, yet
Christians continue to meet for worship and the church in restricted nations are still growing. People
who are willing to sacrifice everything, including their lives, for the sake of spreading the gospel
throughout the world are given the name Jesus Freaks. Many Christians are abused and harassed by
officials or mobs who attempt to force Christians to renounce their faith. In Chiapas, Mexico, a
Christian family was attacked by a mob; killing Pedro, his wife and his son. Six of the other children
were left seriously wounded. ( Christian ). There are many more cases such as these occurring even
now. The list of Christian persecution is endless; several people suffer much more due to their faith.
These Jesus Freaks are continuously victimized and attacked, yet their love for Jesus Christ gives

The Presentation Of The Team Members Who Come From...
Teamwork was a really grateful process and significant experience in my Managing Organizations and
People course study. The teamwork training was very memorable. After more than two weeks of
running, there are many impressive events that happened. From those events, I felt change and also
helped develop myself in some areas. In this reflection essay, the main purpose is to find out whether I
was suitable to my other three team members who come from different cultures and backgrounds,
whether I have good leadership skills and teamwork skills and my individual performance reflective.
Like Levi (2007) has said that work in today s society has become more complex and includes more
unconventional features and interdependence, it produced teamwork out. So I will use the Gibbs
model (Gibbs 1988) which incorporates description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and an
action plan to discuss how our teamwork reflected on the case study, prepare the group presentation
and my individual performance reflective.
Description
Our team case context was provided by the classroom structure and professor. When we just got our
case topic, the boys of our team were really excited, but for girls who do not understand football is
really big bad news. At our first meeting, there were lots of difficulties occurring within our team. I
had no idea about what I can do; even I don t know the problem of the case, because each of us was
lack of communication, understanding and planning.

Success Is The Most Misunderstood Driver Of Performance
Some popular theories claim that the amount a person is paid determines how well that person
produces and performs. However, new research suggests that there are more variables at play
pertaining to peak performance and link an employee s happiness to his or her productivity and a
company s success. Research indicates that performance on nearly every level productivity, creativity,
and engagement improves when people cultivate and work with a positive mind set. According to
Shawn Achor, the author of The Happiness Advantage, Happiness is perhaps the most misunderstood
driver of performance. For one, most people believe that success precedes happiness. Once I get a
promotion, I ll be happy, they think. Or, Once I hit my sales target, I ll feel great. But because success
is a moving target as soon as you hit your target, you raise it again the happiness that results from
success is fleeting. Achor explains that when employees develop a positive mind set, they become
more engaged, creative, motivated, energetic, resilient, and productive at work. He has observed this
effect in his role as a researcher and lecturer in 48 countries on the connection between employee
happiness and success.
In a study at the University of Warwick, economists discovered employees who were happy increased
their productivity by 12%, while unhappy workers were 10% less productive. The Warwick research
team stated: We find that human happiness has large and positive causal effects on

The Single Industry System
The failure of the once famous single industry city, Detroit, is attributed to the weakness of the single
industry system as depicted in the documentary, Detropia. The government in Detroit relied on the
automobile industry so much that the entire city was working around this industry. However, the car
industry was facing a huge crisis which ruined the whole city because of the competition with other
car industries in Asia as well as Europe. Now the economic system in Alberta, especially in Calgary, is
just like the economy in Detroit which strongly relies on one special industry. So would the history
happened in Detroit appears in Alberta again? In the following paragraph, I will provide that the

Stefanick Lorna claims in her book, Alberta Oil and The Decline of Democracy in Canada, the
dependence of the provincial economy on oil revenues leads to the distorted relationship between
government and the oil industry. In her book, Lorna mentioned that the policy, as well as the media,
would provide benefits to these kinds of industries because the government relies on the tax from the
oil industry to provide the financial support to their daily activities such as public services and the
financial support to encourage the technological innovation. What s more, the government advertises
for pillar industry which could attract the workforce from other provinces and reduce the
unemployment rate in the province. In this situation, the government might provide advertisements or
establish policies, such as cheaper housing price or free medical care for oil workers, to attract labor
forces and encourage the development of oil industry, which might be unfair to other industries. This
statement from Lorna strongly proves that the single industry system is harmful to developing a stable
and comfortable society. In addition, the book, Collaboration dynamics in mega projects in the
Canadian oil sands industry, by Abbink shows that the mega projects in the oil industry are notorious
for their cost overruns and schedule slippages. Although the author suggests that the oil industry could
co operate with other factories to reduce the risk and increase the revenue, he claims that the oil
industry in Alberta, especially the sand oil project, works inefficiently and wastes a lot of resources
which is a typical example of diseconomies of scale because of the heavy industry and structure. The
definition of diseconomies of scale is a firm which may become less efficient if it becomes too large (
economics online ). In my opinion, these two books all

David Grusin s On Golden Pond
David Grusin is the composer for On Golden Pond. He was the composer for The Graduate and The
Goonies which are films that I recognized but have not yet seen. I selected On Golden Pond because I
had not heard of the movie beforehand. The 1980s was full of electronic music; however, this film
featured no electronic pop. The film is only instrumental, and due to the fact, the film focuses on an
older couple dealing with growing older and their time with a young man named Billy, I believe the
score is appropriate. When looking at the theme from The Goonies, the use of piano and strings are
apparent in both films.
From the beginning of the film, the score was a peaceful piano piece that went along with the scenery.
It was gentle and non threatening. There is a flute, or other woodwind, that joins the piano, and this is
when a car is seen driving by. Later strings join the ensemble and the music all continues to be soft.
This reassured me that the movie would not be dark or overwhelming. The theme music and film s

This noise is natural and allows the scene to seem realistic, but the music returns when the man goes
into the house and reflects on the items in the household. Throughout the film this transition from
nature to On Golden Pond s theme occurs often. This changeover generally indicated a change in
scene or a resolution to a conflict. There were few moments of conflict where the music fills with
brass sounds and takes on a tense feeling. For example, when the main character goes for a walk in the
woods, I appreciate that the music is heard throughout his walk, it sounds like a harp, other strings,
and woodwind instruments. The audience can hear the leaves crunching and birds; however, when the
music becomes faster and takes on lower pitches, one truly feels the man s stress of becoming lost in
the forest. Additionally, the shift from soft to loud occurs frequently throughout the

Taking Away From The Mozart Effect
This chapter begins but stating exactly what it is going to be talking about which is telling about
music, its importance through theories and then giving evidence. I think what it doesn t tell you is the
valuable knowledge that you will be taking away from the words you read. I know I am not the only
one in this but the main thing that I remember taking away from the Mozart Effect is that when you
have your child listen to Mozart in utero then they would be smarter than if they had not listened to
Mozart. I think it is very interesting that this turned out to be false. The Mozart Effect only really
proved ten minutes of extra skills and that there was no proof of any long term effects. It turns out that

Renewable Resources Wind Energy Is An Important Factor For...
As the concern over environmental issues is attaining importance, generation of power using
renewable energy resources is rapidly increasing. Among renewable resources wind energy plays a
prominent role. Presently wind energy is receiving a special attention of scholars as it is being non
effecting energy and clear green energy. Power generation using wind energy is increasing promptly.
Proper arresting of the wind energy can absolutely aid to meet the energy needs. The quality and
dependability of power have become an important factor for the enlargement of new technologies with
the imminent derestricted environment. The beginning of power electronic devices have steered a new
era of power quality while integrating them with the renewable sources of energy. Distributed
generation (DG) systems are projected to play a vital role to meet the energy demand with non
polluted environment. Distributed generation technologies such as wind turbine, photovoltaic systems,
fuel cell and diesel engines are used in various places. Of all these diesel engines have fast response
time and controllability, they are relatively common for combination with WECS (wind energy
conversion systems).
So a wind diesel system is considered in this project. Recent technology, permanent magnet type have
advantages and disadvantages. They are also discussed here. To convert the energy generated by

Chinese Resistance To Imperialism
Overall resistance to imperialism at the turn of the 20th century was minimally successful mainly
because colonizers were militarily stronger. Imperialism occurs when a strong nation takes over a
weaker nation or region, it will control its economical, political, or cultural ways, using political,
military, social, or economic methods. There are two different methods to imperialism direct of
indirect, as there are different types of ways in imperialism. It can be a colony, protectorate, sphere of
influence and economic control. All of these types have different impacts on both the colonizers and
the colonized.
One example of failed military resistance to imperialism is the case of Zulu in South Africa. At the
beginning the Zulu were conquered ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1898 Germany lead by Dr. Karl Peters used very violent methods to control the people, they even

government realize their methods in the African colonies were brutal, and they changed the reforms.

The Worst Death Trap, Killing Fourteen Italian Immigrants
On March 13, 1900, a tenement building in New York City caught fire, killing fourteen Italian
immigrants. The poorly constructed frame building housed three stories of tenement quarters, with ten
apartments per floor. The rooms were five by ten feet, separated only by flimsy half inch thick boards.
With just one exit through the entrance of the building, and that only by way of a 42 inch wide
stairway, their only escape was destroyed, leaving eleven families of caged victims beyond help.
People became so desperate that they jumped from upper balconies as the firemen on the scene
struggled to control the flames. The top floor proved to be the deadliest, with a victim in nearly all ten
rooms. After the arrest of a suspect and an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Connected to these changes were rapidly declining sanitary conditions in tenement housing and rising
prices. Immigrants came to America with visions of streets paved in gold and a chance to rise through
hard work. Americans who had lived longer in the country and who harbored rabid anti immigrant
sentiments greeted them with derision and abuse. They saw immigrants as competition in an already
dwindling job market, and bearers of the dreaded Catholicism, socialism, communism, and other
foreign evils. Social Darwinism, in vogue at the time, only compounded the problems of the poor.
Darwin s work in animal dominance was translated into social beliefs that benefitted successful
businessmen and capitalist bullies. Social Darwinism claimed that the wealthy were dominant because
they were superior, and the poor were so because they were inherently flawed. The effect of this
theory was that no help was offered to the poor because they deserved none, and there was no call to
level the playing field because the rich had triumphed through natural selection. With more and more
people pouring into the major industrialized cities, new arrivals were forced (often tricked) into cheap
and dirty tenement housing in the more dangerous areas of town, in order to afford bare subsistence in
a society already glutted with humanity and twisted notions about nationality. Tenement fire stories
permeated newspaper reports

The Movie Thelma And Louise
I don t care, I love it The film Thelma and Louise is most famous for its ending scene. The iconic
scene of the two girls kissing and driving off the canyon into their death is present even today in pop
culture and referred back by those who liked it. Although the kiss in the scene was not a romantic kiss,
it captured the love between the two girls, not a romantic homosexualised love, but a heteronormal
sisterhood type of love. Also, their faces prove that they died happy, and chose to die not only because
they had no other choice but because that way they had agency as to what would happen to them and
how they would die. The ending is empowering to women, because the women have the power of
choice, even though they die. Unlike other films we have seen in class such as Vertigo and Crouching
Tiger, Hidden Dragon where the women who die do not seem happy or content with their demise.
Throughout the film both Thelma and Louise are fighting against the patriarchy they must endure
daily and a life they no longer want to live, in a society where they cannot fully express who they are.
The women decide to go on a girl s weekend, from there they run into various predicaments that
eventually lead to their deaths. When Louise picks up Thelma, she asks how did Daryll let you come?
and she admits she did not tell him. This moment in the film shows how repressed these women were.
This is a breakthrough for women in film because they begin to have agency, and

Stress Reflection
Conclusively, this biggest impact from this class was the enlightenment on how my stress is going to
kill me if I do not make immediate changes to my life. Moreover, week one was a reality check for me
seeing just what the effects of stress can do to an individual was beneficial in recognizing I was
exhibited some of the symptoms of stress related illnesses. Through the reading material I remember
thinking stress is doing unbelievable things physically and mentally to me and I was oblivious.
Thankfully, from this course I have learned and implemented some valuable techniques that have been
working for me thus far. First, from the Wisdom of the Ages section, this was one of my favorite
sections in the text; I learned how to utilize the decompression chamber technique (Manning, Curtis,
McMillen Attenweiler, 2011). With my horrendous history of carrying work stress home and vice
versa, this technique has allowed me to use the three R concepts, which are reviewing the previous
events, rehearsing for impending activities and relaxing (Manning et al., 2011). Successfully, using my
drive time in my vehicle to mentally unwind and relax between has helped me tremendously. In
addition, being on the verge of burnout, taking time to escape for a while has been advantageous in
my life (Manning et al., 2011). Since I started taking walks at break time at work or when I feel my
stress rising and when I am overwhelmed at home I have been giving myself a cooling off period to

The Power Of Music In Whitney Houston s When You Believe
Music has the unique power to influence the attitudes and actions of a person. Whether it is used as a
source of hope and soulful reflection on past struggles, like in Whitney Houston s When You Believe,
or to draw strength and determination to Olympians in Vangelis Chariots of Fire, music can provide
spiritual, inspirational or hope filled meaning. In order to inspire and motivate year 12 students, the
electrifying Chariots of Fire is clearly a superior choice compared to the spiritual and soulful When
You Believe. This is evident through the analysis of timbre, dynamics and expression and pitch.
Through the manipulation of the musical element timbre, it is clear that Chariots of Fire is the
favoured selection to inspire and motivate seniors ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Chariots of Fire, the consistent ascending and descending movement in the melodic contour, heard
at 0:34 0:50, represents the highs and lows of success, where it is common to get knocked down (seen
in the descending phase) and bounce back (seen in the repeated ascension of the melody). This
encourages students to be persistent to achieve success. When You Believe also has this wave like
contour, highlighted at 1:50 2:05. Unlike Chariots of Fire, this movement gradually ascends during the
climaxes of the piece, creating a sense of uplifting hope and celebration rather than inspiration and
motivation required. When You Believe contains melismas and passing notes, evident at 1:00 1:20.
Whilst this does provide diversity to the piece, the piece loses stability. Dissimilarly, Chariots of Fire
does not include this manipulation. This lack of embellishment successfully grounds the piece,
conveying a sense of drive and determination, motivating students to work hard. Furthermore, When
You Believe has a wide range and register, heard at 2:12 2:25. The use of the high register adds a
dream like and free quality to the piece, not suited to the grounding of senior students. Dissimilarly,
Chariots of Fire has a medium range and middle register successfully grounding the piece, useful
when attempting to motivate senior students. Additionally, the chord progressions throughout Chariots
of Fire portray a sense of unity and strength, through the use of block chords. This has not been
achieved in When You Believe, where the chords are broken into 3 quavers (evident in bars 2 5),
producing a smoother and more subdued mood. The slow harmonic rhythm created by the Db
sustained pedal portrays a sense of endurance and reliability, both linking to the physiognomies of the
characters in the movie and the

The US market is also much more price driven, and lingerie (e.g. bras) cost a lot less.
In Europe there seems to be a difference between northern and southern countries. In southern Europe
they buy more lingerie than in northern Europe. One of the reasons could be that women in southern
Europe place more emphasis on feeling romantic and sexy. Also the more intensive sweating in these
countries may lead to more purchase of lingerie. Another explanation could be, that the northern
countries are colder and women wear thicker clothes, so they are not so worried about how their
underwear looks.
In order to make the right approach to the lingerie market, it is vital to analyze and interpret attitudes
around sex and body image correctly across international markets. In general the US lingerie market is
very conservative compared to Europe, though brands like Victoria s Secret has moved the needle in
United States. While Scndinavia may have liberal attitudes to bodies and sexuality, other markets,
such as India and Japan, are more demure.
As in other apparel designs, the trends in lingerie have been dictated by fabric developments. This has
meant that glamour, the art of seduction, and feminine charm are all ingredients in the current vogue.
In addition, many bras are designed for women who partake in jogging, aerobics, tennis, etc. to gain
maximum benefit from their active lifestyles.

Liberal Iraq War
On September 11, 2001, the world witnessed deadly, psychologically disruptive, and economically
devastating terrorist attacks organized and funded by Al Qaeda against New York and Washington,
D.C. This event eventually led to the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
There are many ways in which the Iraq war and its aftermath support elements of liberalism. Liberals
posit that aggression and war cannot be avoided but can be moderated, if not eliminated, through a
collective action. They add that institutions are effective in managing self interests thereby making
perpetual peace and economic development a possibility. Pertinent elements of liberal IR theory to be
discussed are the following: value of multilateral approach, aspect of humanitarian intervention,
spread of democracy, and the notion of benign liberal empire.
International partnership and multilateral approach to both creating chaos and ensuring security were
evident in this historical case. The 9/11 attack, directed by Osama bin Laden, set into ... Show more

The example of a free Iraq would accordingly inspire other peoples of the region to the belief that
democracy was not just a Western invention but a universal human right. This is a profoundly liberal
argument adopted by the Bush administration. In the words of Ikenberry (2004), if the values of
democracy and the rule of law are established in troubled countries around the world, security threats
would cease bringing in lasting peace liberals view highly of.
In conclusion, the relationship between the liberalist theory and the global war on terrorism along with
the subsequent Iraq invasion illustrated the importance liberals place on universal interdependence
along with the promotion of perpetual peace as a solution to global security and, ideally as it would

Mike Tidwell wrote this novel with the purpose of informing the readers about the wonderful, often
overlooked location that is the Bayou. He wants the public to know that this region is a treasure and
holds many unique qualities that so many places in the United States are missing today. Through his
journeys he came to love the land and the water. He learned a great deal about shrimping and
crabbing, and the way of life on the Cajun coast. While he wrote this book to inform people about the
region, he also wrote it to persuade readers to care. He wants people to realize that this territory is
becoming extinct. There are many reasons why much of the marshlands are turning to open waters,
and he wants to make sure that the readers become curious about them. He wants to pass on his love
of the land to those who read about his experiences. He most likely hopes that people will read this
book and consider what they can do to help out the cause. Most of the author s statements are based on
experiences. The majority of the book is about the experiences that the author has during his travels
down the bayou. While a few of his chapters do have some facts about the problem of the sinking land
, it s mainly based on his experiences. He writes about what he knows and what he learns. While his

The Anasazi The Anasazi people inhabited an area called the Four Corners of Southwest America. The
Four Corners area consisted of northeastern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico, southeastern Utah

surrounding the mystery of these people have emerged over the years but no conclusion has been

diverse segments that waged war upon each other until only the most aggressive parts of the culture
survived to move on. The Anasazi people began as hunters and gatherers. They eventually began to
settle into more permanent structures and began growing their own food. They primarily grew corn

Thomas More has the moral dilemma to speak against the supremacy of the King Henry VIII or stay
silent and let things happen. He chooses staying silent to find a way to stop him, but is this a moral
decision to follow? Even if he recognizes that silence never helps, he doesn t speak against. I think
this is a moral conflict. I posit that the conflict Thomas More confronted in the history resonates with
many present day situations.
In my view, Thomas More s professional life, which is characterized most often by his refusal to
endorse the objectives of King Henry VIII, exemplifies the recurrent conflict between the head of the
Congress personal beliefs and the expectations of the sovereign. Thomas More s moral dilemma of

Hip-Hop s Musical Evolution of Rap Essay
The hip hop culture began in the streets of New York City during the 1970 s and has gone through
tremendous changes up until now. Hip Hop consists of four elements: rap, graffiti, break dancing, and
the disc jockey. In this paper, I intend to fully explain the evolution of rap music, from its infancy to
the giant industry it is today.
Hip Hop emerged in the 1970 s upon the arrival of a one Kool DJ Herc. Kool DJ Herc migrated to the
United States from Kingston, Jamaica and settled in the West Bronx of New York. Kool DJ Herc was
a disc jockey that attempted to incorporate his Jamaica style of disc jockeying, which involved
reciting improvised rhymes over reggae records. Unfortunately for Kool DJ Herc New York seemed ...

As rap music spread throughout the urban community of New York, many people began to use it as a
form of expression that offered unlimited boundaries. There were no set rules, except to be original
and to rhyme to the beat of the music. One could rap about the issues pertaining to his or her life or
something as simple as a day at school.
Kool DJ Herc opened the door to the world for many up and comers such as Grandmaster Flash. DJ
Grandmaster Flash and his group the Furious Five were hip hop, greatest innovators, transcending the

between tracks exactly on beat), back spinning (manually turning records to repeat brief snippets of

Themes of Loss in The Shawl and Bone Black Essay
The loss of a family member is always hard to deal with and it affects everyone differently. Some
people are open about their feelings and others bottle them up. In terms of relationships within a
family, usually the closest is between the parent and child. When this relationship is cut short or is
nonexistent because of a loss it can be especially devastating. The loss of a family member does not
always refer to an actual physical loss, but can also refer to an emotional distance put between two
people. In The Shawl by Louise Erdrich, there is an example of a physical loss and its effects on the
family, while in Bone Black by Bell Hooks the loss shown is of the emotional kind and it s aftermath.

Female And Female Gender Roles
Literature throughout history has displayed to us the evolution of the male and female gender roles in
society. Women have been described as the angel in the house, whilst men are typified as dominant
and prevailing in comparison to women. The gothic genre in literature is used to personify and
exaggerate these stereotypes, by using gothic motifs such as dream sequences and themes such as
horror and terror. Not only does the gothic exaggerate the stereotypes, but it also allows them to be
contravened, due to the transgressive nature of the genre. The psychoanalytical aspect of this genre,
allows for repressed desires to be made eminent and therefore characters can transgress and in the
process, cross their contemporary gender boundaries. Keats uses the gothic device of Negative
capability in order to conceal the transgression of the females in his poetry, Carter revised gothic
fairytales in order to display them from a feminist approach and Stoker uses gothic themes, set against
the backdrop of the fluidity of Fin de siècle period, to allow characters to stray from their gender
stereotypes.
Victorian women were supposed to be both selflessly devoted, to their children and submissive, to

Mitochondria In The Cytoplasm Of Eukaryotic
Mitochondria are organelles found in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells and play a crucial role in the
respiration of the cell (Bandelt et al, 2006). Mitochondria are thought to have originated as free living
bacteria that parasited proto eukaryotic cells~1.5 billion years ago and have since remained in an
endosymbiotic relationship inside eukaryotic cells (Margulis, 1981). The mitochondria preserve
remnants of the original bacterial genome coding for key aspects of the mitochondrial machinery, but
over the course of evolution, most mitochondrial genes have been transferred to the nucleus. The

Assess The Difference Between Pluralism And Exclusivism

Graphically Representing Data
Within a School Setting
Christopher M. Lightfoot Abstract
This paper examines the ability to graphically display frequency distribution tables that are
represented within a school setting. There are three types of data sets that are interpreted within two
types of frequency distribution tables (see Table 1). The first type of data set that is mentioned is a
discrete nominal data set that is graphically displayed as a bar chart (see Figure 1), which displays the
reoccurrence of each category within the simple frequency table (see Table 2). The second data type
referenced is a discrete ordinal data set that was analyzed through a simple frequency table. The
simple frequency table allows for the conversion of the ordinal data into a pie chart (see Figure 2),
which measures the percentages within a four point Likert Scale (see Table 3). The final data source is
a continuous interval set, which was interpreted through a cumulative frequency table (see table 4).
The cumulative frequency table is graphically represented in Figure 3 as a combination of a histogram

The Influence Of Gangs In America
As a reader, I found thi¬¬s book very interesting and very easy to relate to. For me, life was not easy
growing up in Atlanta as a black male, as a child I consistently witnessed situations similar to what
Sudhir Venkatesh experienced such as gang beatings and the selling of illegal substances. Growing up
I moved homes and schools a few times and from this experience I learned that initially you will not
be accepted in a certain community, you have to slowly get accustomed to the norms before you are
welcomed in. Surprisingly the streets are a very judgmental place, just for being different Venkatesh
was called a Mexican and nigger when in fact he was neither. I can recall numerous circumstances
growing up when I was unfairly judged and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At one point in time Venkatesh himself stated that he was a hustler among hustlers, but unlike the
gang he wasn t hustling narcotics or money he was hustling participants. I seemed to me that
Venkatesh was using the gang members for his personal benefit since he received academic
advancements and praise. While studying communities, confidentiality is very important but in this
research Venkatesh breaks this rule because once he discovered that members of the gang had other
sources of income such as babysitting or prostitution. Venkatesh ends up telling JT and Ms. Baily
about his findings. This was a problem because after finding out about this information JT and Ms.
Baily felt like they were owed more money so they taxed people more money. I didn t like the way
Venkatesh considered himself a hustler among hustlers because while conducting research you should
be straight forward to the participates and tell them exactly what you are researching. Also, I hated
how Venkatesh handled the privacy of the residents of Robert Taylor because many people ended up
losing money that they could have used to support their family. I believe that everything in an
interview should stay between the interviewer and the

The Theme Of Compassion Mercy
THE THEME OF COMPASSION MERCY IN THE GOSPEL OF LUKE BY LYNETTE IDIO
Achievement Standard 91724
The Greek word, eleos, best translates into mercy and compassion . It is significant that eleos appears
six times in Gospel of Luke, also known as, the Gospel of Mercy . Compassion is a powerful
awareness of concern for other s suffering and feeling sympathy. While mercy is the exercised virtue
of forgiving, founded on compassion. Simply, mercy is putting the emotional connection of sympathy
or pity of others into action. These Catholic virtues are especially highlighted within the Catholic
Church s current teaching amid our 2016 Jubilee Year of Mercy (8th December 2015 to 20th
November 2016). Pope Francis calls Catholic all over the world to bring Jesus mission here on Earth.
to bring a word and gesture of consolation to the poor, to proclaim liberty to those bound by new
forms of slavery in modern society, to restore sight to those who can see no more because they are
caught in themselves, to restore dignity to all those from whom it has been robbed. (n.16)
The Gospel of Luke thoroughly illustrates the themes of mercy and compassion in his use of literary
devices such as symbols, stories and parables. Luke urges how significant it is to feel and deliver the
ready willingness to help anyone in need in our society. The Gospel offers a model to live out these
virtues through Jesus actions and his parables.

Baboons
Baboons also known by their scientific name Papio anubis are among one of the most abundant
species of monkeys in Africa. They are also some of the world s largest monkeys in the primate order.
All baboons have a strong torso, snout like face, sharp canine teeth, powerful jaws, and a naked rump.
Most baboons are at least twenty inches long and weight at most eighty two pounds. The tails of most
baboons are at least seventy cm long and have a characteristic arch. Unlike other primates most
baboons live in savannas, where they spend most of their time roaming on the ground. However,
baboons can and do climb trees to sleep, eat, and look out for trouble. Baboons live mostly in large
troops that can be as small as ten members and as large as two hundred members. Most of the baboon
troops are composed of females who are born into the troops and males who join the troop after

The New Model Intelligence Led Approach
As the new lieutenant in charge of policing violent crime in the city, the increase of violent crimes has
been brought to my knowledge. Understanding that, some changes will be implementing into our
department. For the past two months the amount of knowledge I have encounter when dealing within
the criminal justice agencies, has been a lot. However, it has been the major key to making an
organization have structure, a mission to oblige by, as well reducing the crime rate effectively. In this
dissertation (meeting) a discussion of the new model intelligence led approach will be describe how,
along with an example of how well other organization utilizing these concepts to improve the
reduction of crimes. Finally, a goal will be presented on how to go about implementing the evidence
based practice chosen.
In the course of learning these programs, distinguishing the best approach for the department will be
difficult at first, but once that portion is articulated, keeping it together and following the rules and
regulations are going to be easy, if every individual listens and is willing to be a part of this journey as
the unit evolve for the better, and sake of the community. There are many intelligence led approach

Persuasive Essay About Bad Driving
My best friend will likely be the death of me, but I still love her. I have known her for three years and
would trust her with anything, or so I thought. Everything changed the moment she got her license.
Suddenly the need for coffee was completely eliminated, and all I had to do was ride to school with
her. Through many close encounters and two accidents so far, I have learned the definition of a terrible
driver. Every ride with her is an adventure involving skipped stop signs, speeding, and near collisions.
She is the reason why many adults believe that teenagers should not their license because of poor
driving. The first thing I do when I get inside her car is buckle my seatbelt and prepare myself for the
journey ahead. The entire time she is behind the wheel, I am on the edge of my seat checking her
speedometer and watching for children and other cars. Subconsciously, my hands curl around the seat
belt and tightly grip it when I notice a sharp turn or speed bump ahead. I do my best to not make a
sound, but I sometimes catch myself mentioning the turning car ahead. My friend snaps at me and
assures me that she knows what she is doing, but I am not convinced. Only when the car is in park and
my shoes touch solid ground, am I able to breathe normally.
When you are taught to drive, the instructor emphasizes the importance of being aware of your
surroundings and reacting to them. In spite of this being the essence of driving, my friend is oblivious
to everything around

Date:
16/10/14
Presenting complaint:
Mr M, a 48 year old gentleman, came to the clinic with on going sleep problems. He complained of
depressed mod caused by exacerbations of his pre existing depression. He was feeling very low and
mentioned that he had has suicidal thoughts lately. He cited his children as the protective factor. His
brother died due to a car accident and he has been blamed by his father to be the cause of his death
since then. He also witnessed his friend diedin an accident when he was 10 and has been getting more
flashbacks of that incident.
During the second visit 3 weeks later, M felt worse on Mirtazepine and felt more agitated. He told us
his intentions to take a load of tablets during the weekend just t get him to sleep. He was also worried
about addiction in the long term. He came back a month later and feels his mood to be worse. He has
fallen out with his father
Reflection
Depression was one of the common presenting complaints during our postings. It is found that one
fifth of the Scottish population will experience depression at some point in their lives. The severity
can range from mild disturbances to a severe illness with a high risk of suicide.
Detecting depression is essential in general practice and to even raise the topic can be difficult.
Patients feel reluctant to raise such distressing issues up till it gets severe and so their concerns remain
unvoiced. Some on the other hand resist the idea of the possible diagnosis and not want

Does Detecting Breast Cancer with MRIs Increase the Rate...
In the last years, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has become a very popular method used for the
early detection of breast cancer, because it has greater sensibility than mammography. But, opponents
of MRI are concerned about this type of examination because of the belief that it may increase rates of
mastectomy. However, different studies have been performed and no proof of this has been recorded
(Dang and Zaguiyan et al 937). Although many people think that mastectomy may increase with MRI
s, I feel that these types of screenings should be more recommendable for women at high risk for
breast cancer, because cancer, if not treated on time might be fatal.
Mammography has been traditionally used for breast examination, in order to detect ... Show more

They came up with the hypothesis that MRI did not increase rates of mastectomy, and as they
expected the results showed that patients considered with early breast cancer, did not make a
difference in mastectomy rates (quoted in Dang and Zaguiyan et al 937 938).
It is only a presumption that magnetic resonance imaging use contributes to mastectomy, and some do
not support this conclusion (Dang and Zaguiyan et al 939). But as the evidence shows, there is no
proof that magnetic resonance imaging may cause an increase of mastectomy. I think the real issue is
just a matter of controversy, and conclusions seem to have been prematurely made.
In the other hand, the fact that Magnetic Resonance Imaging is not affected by breast density has been
mentioned repeatedly. Despite its sensitivity, which is greater than ninety five percent, false positive
results have been reported, which rates the accuracy of MRI between its thirty seven and ninety seven
percent. (Dang and Zaguiyan et al 937). But I personally think that occult breast cancer is a very
uncommon presentation. All tests and screenings may have their failures, and Magnetic Resonance
Imaging is not an exception.
However, I want to make clear that I am not saying that mammograms should be substituted by
Magnetic Resonance Imaging for every woman, nor I am saying mammography s use should be
discontinued. But, MRI should be recommended as an additional protocol to mammography, for
women at very high risk for breast

Heather Voke Policy Analysis
Many have voiced their concerns over the many issues within the teaching profession. Heather Voke
of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum responds to one issue, the teacher shortage, by
researching the nature of the shortage, its probable causes, problems resulting from the shortage, and
frequently recommended policy changes. According to Voke (2003), 42 percent of all teachers leaving
depart for lack of job satisfaction, to pursue another career, or better career opportunities. Low salaries
and lack of public respect also impacts teacher retention. Policy recommendations to retain teachers
include: salary increases, high quality induction programs, prohibit out of field teaching, include
teachers in decision making, developing current teachers, collaboration with universities to attract and
train teachers, and reduce class size. Voke suggests that policy makers and educational leaders do not
understand the nature of the teacher shortage. Moreover, developing programs to attract candidates
and not properly train them risks wasting valuable resources. According to Heller (2004), education is
notorious for a low survival rate of new teachers. Teachers feel isolated because they have little ...

They believe that a comprehensive, multi year induction program will assist with the many struggles
of new teachers. States with more comprehensive policies have positively impacted the design and
implementation of high quality induction and mentoring programs. The NTC reviews existing policies
in relation to the 10 key criteria most important to high quality induction and mentoring programs for
new teachers. The results of the review suggest the following: some states are exemplars in providing
induction and mentoring support according to the 10 key criteria; no single state has perfected the
programs, and half of the state do not require induction and mentoring

College Is A Time For Young Men And Women
College is a time for young men and women to achieve a higher education in order to grasp their
dreams and hopes for their lives. While on this endeavor, pressures in all forms, shapes, and sizes
attack us nearly every day. As a college student the fear and lack of money show their ugly head all
the time. Learning to budget money, deciding what is important to spend limited funds on, and the
ever present repayment of college loans puts stress on students. But the pressure that weighs the most
on my mind is the health of my family members. Letting these fear, distract your attention and focus
can lead to a place of depression and anxiety I would personally know because it has affected me only
six weeks into college.
Money is without a doubt the root of any and all evil. Money makes people do crazy things to obtain
it. It is very much like a drug that affects everyone on the planet, because of the allure of power that
comes with it. But in my circumstance money concerns me in the form of college payments. The
constant thought of what if attacks me on a day to day basis; what if I don t have enough money to eat
today, what if my scholarship falls through. But college is a ride that I willing signed up for and I am
more than determined to see it until the end. I feel that if I fail in college all of my hard work and all of
my dreams, and my mother s dreams will be for nothing. Now the annual repayment of loans isn t the
biggest factor to me, it is six months after

  • 2. Analysis Of The New York Times By Cyra Mcfaddin In Cyra McFaddin s article published in the New York Times titled In Defense of Gender, she asserts that male pronouns should not be eliminated from written and spoken English works. McFaddin uses satire in an attempt to make readers sympathetic to a writer s problem of trying to be nondiscriminatory by using gender neutral language. Cyra McFaddin s goal is to convince readers that gender neutral language won t solve any problems or advance feminist ideas because she believes some take it to the extreme. She also thinks that using slashes and the term person makes the English language sound cumbersome and will never please everyone. I disagree with McFaddin. She is quick to criticize the progress that others are attempting to make without offering a solution to the gender neutral language that she so despises. I believe that any progress forward is worthwhile, and accuracy is paramount. Ultimately, everyone just wants to be included in the default. While McFaddin attempts to use humor to cover her complaints of how bland or distracting writing seems when gender neutral language is used, and how it doesn t aid in the development of relationships when used; inclusion of everyone is much more valuable and worthwhile. McFaddin makes the point that when writers use a slash in their work, it can be distracting to read especially out loud. She does this by saying, In print, those person suffixes and he/she s jump out from the page, as distracting as a cloud of gnats, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Love And Hate In George Orwell s 1984 Without love we tend to grow a sense of hatred within ourselves and for each other. In the novel, 1984, Big Brother is portrayed as the leader in society, symbolizing a god like figure who has total dominance over their citizens. Therefore, the people find themselves full of hate considering their government is controlling them. George Orwell s message in 1984 claims that a society based on hate would not survive seeing that the people would be the cause of their own destruction. The story 1984 focuses on a man named Winston Smith, who lives in Oceania, an imaginative country, ruled by the Party through a totalitarianism government. In their world, people are divided by three social groups such as the Inner Party, the Outer Party, and the Proles. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the story, the Party uses the power of hate to take advantage of the people into loving Big Brother. For example, the point when Winston and Julia had a love affair with each other, was not only for lust but also to rebel against their government. With regard to their love affair the novel states Not merely the love of one person, but the animal instinct , the simple undifferentiated desire: the was the force that would tear the Party to pieces. He pressed her down upon the grass, among the fallen bluebells. (Orwell, 126) They were never in love because the hate they had for Big Brother is what lead them to commit such an act. The love and friendship people have for each other in Oceania is non existent. The Party desperately tries to erase love for anything but Big Brother from the lives of their citizens. In doing so, they manage to place telescreens in every house, street, and public place which is a security camera to prevent anyone from committing an act of rebellion towards Big Brother. In addition, there is no friendship and people are forced into serving Big Brother by a selective job. In the novel, it states The old civilizations claimed that they were founded on love and justice. Ours is founded upon hatred. In our world there will be no emotions except fear, rage, triumph, and self abasement. (Orwell, 267) This reveals that in their society, people are being forced to be someone they re ... • 4. Graff And Birkenstein s Essay They Say I Say The article They Say I Say written by Graff and Birkenstein discusses several ways to not only write academically but express thoughts in an academic manner. The first aspect talked about is how to write about what others are saying. This helps clarify what exactly the author is talking about. After you have stated what they say , you can state your own argument and tell what you agree with. Graff and Birkenstein also state that stating your own opinion as quickly as possible is also important; this gives the reader an understanding about the motivation of your argument is. • 5. Christian Persecution Christian Persecution Christians are being persecuted for their faith in more than the forty nations around world today. In some nations, it is illegal to own a Bible, to share one s faith in Christ, and even teach one s children about Jesus Christ. Those who boldly follow Christ, in spite of government decree or opposition, can face harassment, arrest, torture and even death. Dr. Nhia Vang Vang, the pastor of the First Hmong Alliance Church in Longview, NC, mentioned that Christianity has been persecuted for over 2000 years up until now. However, more Christians have been arrested, harassed, and persecuted in this century than in the previous nineteen combined (Vang). Christian persecution is a world wide problem, having an effect ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pastor Bike (Pastor Zhang Mingxuan) is a missionary who travels across China on a bicycle to spread the news of Jesus Christ. He was arrested by the Chinese officials on August 6, 2008; just two days after the Olympics began. ( Olympic ). Mingxuan was tortured and interrogated in prison countless times. However, regardless of the harassment by the Chinese officials, Pastor Bike continued to win several lives for Jesus Christ. The numbers of Christian martyrs are increasing by the year, yet Christians continue to meet for worship and the church in restricted nations are still growing. People who are willing to sacrifice everything, including their lives, for the sake of spreading the gospel throughout the world are given the name Jesus Freaks. Many Christians are abused and harassed by officials or mobs who attempt to force Christians to renounce their faith. In Chiapas, Mexico, a Christian family was attacked by a mob; killing Pedro, his wife and his son. Six of the other children were left seriously wounded. ( Christian ). There are many more cases such as these occurring even now. The list of Christian persecution is endless; several people suffer much more due to their faith. • 6. The Presentation Of The Team Members Who Come From... Teamwork was a really grateful process and significant experience in my Managing Organizations and People course study. The teamwork training was very memorable. After more than two weeks of running, there are many impressive events that happened. From those events, I felt change and also helped develop myself in some areas. In this reflection essay, the main purpose is to find out whether I was suitable to my other three team members who come from different cultures and backgrounds, whether I have good leadership skills and teamwork skills and my individual performance reflective. Like Levi (2007) has said that work in today s society has become more complex and includes more unconventional features and interdependence, it produced teamwork out. So I will use the Gibbs model (Gibbs 1988) which incorporates description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and an action plan to discuss how our teamwork reflected on the case study, prepare the group presentation and my individual performance reflective. Description Our team case context was provided by the classroom structure and professor. When we just got our case topic, the boys of our team were really excited, but for girls who do not understand football is really big bad news. At our first meeting, there were lots of difficulties occurring within our team. I had no idea about what I can do; even I don t know the problem of the case, because each of us was lack of communication, understanding and planning. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Success Is The Most Misunderstood Driver Of Performance Some popular theories claim that the amount a person is paid determines how well that person produces and performs. However, new research suggests that there are more variables at play pertaining to peak performance and link an employee s happiness to his or her productivity and a company s success. Research indicates that performance on nearly every level productivity, creativity, and engagement improves when people cultivate and work with a positive mind set. According to Shawn Achor, the author of The Happiness Advantage, Happiness is perhaps the most misunderstood driver of performance. For one, most people believe that success precedes happiness. Once I get a promotion, I ll be happy, they think. Or, Once I hit my sales target, I ll feel great. But because success is a moving target as soon as you hit your target, you raise it again the happiness that results from success is fleeting. Achor explains that when employees develop a positive mind set, they become more engaged, creative, motivated, energetic, resilient, and productive at work. He has observed this effect in his role as a researcher and lecturer in 48 countries on the connection between employee happiness and success. In a study at the University of Warwick, economists discovered employees who were happy increased their productivity by 12%, while unhappy workers were 10% less productive. The Warwick research team stated: We find that human happiness has large and positive causal effects on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Single Industry System The failure of the once famous single industry city, Detroit, is attributed to the weakness of the single industry system as depicted in the documentary, Detropia. The government in Detroit relied on the automobile industry so much that the entire city was working around this industry. However, the car industry was facing a huge crisis which ruined the whole city because of the competition with other car industries in Asia as well as Europe. Now the economic system in Alberta, especially in Calgary, is just like the economy in Detroit which strongly relies on one special industry. So would the history happened in Detroit appears in Alberta again? In the following paragraph, I will provide that the shortcoming of the single industry system ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Stefanick Lorna claims in her book, Alberta Oil and The Decline of Democracy in Canada, the dependence of the provincial economy on oil revenues leads to the distorted relationship between government and the oil industry. In her book, Lorna mentioned that the policy, as well as the media, would provide benefits to these kinds of industries because the government relies on the tax from the oil industry to provide the financial support to their daily activities such as public services and the financial support to encourage the technological innovation. What s more, the government advertises for pillar industry which could attract the workforce from other provinces and reduce the unemployment rate in the province. In this situation, the government might provide advertisements or establish policies, such as cheaper housing price or free medical care for oil workers, to attract labor forces and encourage the development of oil industry, which might be unfair to other industries. This statement from Lorna strongly proves that the single industry system is harmful to developing a stable and comfortable society. In addition, the book, Collaboration dynamics in mega projects in the Canadian oil sands industry, by Abbink shows that the mega projects in the oil industry are notorious for their cost overruns and schedule slippages. Although the author suggests that the oil industry could co operate with other factories to reduce the risk and increase the revenue, he claims that the oil industry in Alberta, especially the sand oil project, works inefficiently and wastes a lot of resources which is a typical example of diseconomies of scale because of the heavy industry and structure. The definition of diseconomies of scale is a firm which may become less efficient if it becomes too large ( economics online ). In my opinion, these two books all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. David Grusin s On Golden Pond David Grusin is the composer for On Golden Pond. He was the composer for The Graduate and The Goonies which are films that I recognized but have not yet seen. I selected On Golden Pond because I had not heard of the movie beforehand. The 1980s was full of electronic music; however, this film featured no electronic pop. The film is only instrumental, and due to the fact, the film focuses on an older couple dealing with growing older and their time with a young man named Billy, I believe the score is appropriate. When looking at the theme from The Goonies, the use of piano and strings are apparent in both films. From the beginning of the film, the score was a peaceful piano piece that went along with the scenery. It was gentle and non threatening. There is a flute, or other woodwind, that joins the piano, and this is when a car is seen driving by. Later strings join the ensemble and the music all continues to be soft. This reassured me that the movie would not be dark or overwhelming. The theme music and film s focus on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout the film this transition from nature to On Golden Pond s theme occurs often. This changeover generally indicated a change in scene or a resolution to a conflict. There were few moments of conflict where the music fills with brass sounds and takes on a tense feeling. For example, when the main character goes for a walk in the woods, I appreciate that the music is heard throughout his walk, it sounds like a harp, other strings, and woodwind instruments. The audience can hear the leaves crunching and birds; however, when the music becomes faster and takes on lower pitches, one truly feels the man s stress of becoming lost in the forest. I think what it doesn t tell you is the valuable knowledge that you will be taking away from the words you read. As the concern over environmental issues is attaining importance, generation of power using renewable energy resources is rapidly increasing. Among renewable resources wind energy plays a prominent role. Presently wind energy is receiving a special attention of scholars as it is being non effecting energy and clear green energy. Power generation using wind energy is increasing promptly. Proper arresting of the wind energy can absolutely aid to meet the energy needs. The quality and dependability of power have become an important factor for the enlargement of new technologies with the imminent derestricted environment. The beginning of power electronic devices have steered a new era of power quality while integrating them with the renewable sources of energy. Distributed generation (DG) systems are projected to play a vital role to meet the energy demand with non polluted environment. Distributed generation technologies such as wind turbine, photovoltaic systems, fuel cell and diesel engines are used in various places. Of all these diesel engines have fast response time and controllability, they are relatively common for combination with WECS (wind energy conversion systems). • 12. Chinese Resistance To Imperialism Overall resistance to imperialism at the turn of the 20th century was minimally successful mainly because colonizers were militarily stronger. Imperialism occurs when a strong nation takes over a weaker nation or region, it will control its economical, political, or cultural ways, using political, military, social, or economic methods. There are two different methods to imperialism direct of indirect, as there are different types of ways in imperialism. It can be a colony, protectorate, sphere of influence and economic control. All of these types have different impacts on both the colonizers and the colonized. One example of failed military resistance to imperialism is the case of Zulu in South Africa. • 13. The Worst Death Trap, Killing Fourteen Italian Immigrants On March 13, 1900, a tenement building in New York City caught fire, killing fourteen Italian immigrants. The poorly constructed frame building housed three stories of tenement quarters, with ten apartments per floor. The rooms were five by ten feet, separated only by flimsy half inch thick boards. With just one exit through the entrance of the building, and that only by way of a 42 inch wide stairway, their only escape was destroyed, leaving eleven families of caged victims beyond help. People became so desperate that they jumped from upper balconies as the firemen on the scene struggled to control the flames. The top floor proved to be the deadliest, with a victim in nearly all ten rooms. After the arrest of a suspect and an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Connected to these changes were rapidly declining sanitary conditions in tenement housing and rising prices. Immigrants came to America with visions of streets paved in gold and a chance to rise through hard work. Americans who had lived longer in the country and who harbored rabid anti immigrant sentiments greeted them with derision and abuse. They saw immigrants as competition in an already dwindling job market, and bearers of the dreaded Catholicism, socialism, communism, and other foreign evils. Social Darwinism, in vogue at the time, only compounded the problems of the poor. Darwin s work in animal dominance was translated into social beliefs that benefitted successful businessmen and capitalist bullies. Social Darwinism claimed that the wealthy were dominant because they were superior, and the poor were so because they were inherently flawed. The effect of this theory was that no help was offered to the poor because they deserved none, and there was no call to level the playing field because the rich had triumphed through natural selection. With more and more people pouring into the major industrialized cities, new arrivals were forced (often tricked) into cheap and dirty tenement housing in the more dangerous areas of town, in order to afford bare subsistence in a society already glutted with humanity and twisted notions about nationality. • 14. The Movie Thelma And Louise I don t care, I love it The film Thelma and Louise is most famous for its ending scene. The iconic scene of the two girls kissing and driving off the canyon into their death is present even today in pop culture and referred back by those who liked it. Although the kiss in the scene was not a romantic kiss, it captured the love between the two girls, not a romantic homosexualised love, but a heteronormal sisterhood type of love. Also, their faces prove that they died happy, and chose to die not only because they had no other choice but because that way they had agency as to what would happen to them and how they would die. The ending is empowering to women, because the women have the power of choice, even though they die. Unlike other films we have seen in class such as Vertigo and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon where the women who die do not seem happy or content with their demise. Throughout the film both Thelma and Louise are fighting against the patriarchy they must endure daily and a life they no longer want to live, in a society where they cannot fully express who they are. The women decide to go on a girl s weekend, from there they run into various predicaments that eventually lead to their deaths. When Louise picks up Thelma, she asks how did Daryll let you come? and she admits she did not tell him. This moment in the film shows how repressed these women were. • 15. Stress Reflection Conclusively, this biggest impact from this class was the enlightenment on how my stress is going to kill me if I do not make immediate changes to my life. Moreover, week one was a reality check for me seeing just what the effects of stress can do to an individual was beneficial in recognizing I was exhibited some of the symptoms of stress related illnesses. Through the reading material I remember thinking stress is doing unbelievable things physically and mentally to me and I was oblivious. Thankfully, from this course I have learned and implemented some valuable techniques that have been working for me thus far. First, from the Wisdom of the Ages section, this was one of my favorite sections in the text; I learned how to utilize the decompression chamber technique (Manning, Curtis, McMillen Attenweiler, 2011). With my horrendous history of carrying work stress home and vice versa, this technique has allowed me to use the three R concepts, which are reviewing the previous events, rehearsing for impending activities and relaxing (Manning et al., 2011). Successfully, using my drive time in my vehicle to mentally unwind and relax between has helped me tremendously. In addition, being on the verge of burnout, taking time to escape for a while has been advantageous in my life (Manning et al., 2011). Since I started taking walks at break time at work or when I feel my stress rising and when I am overwhelmed at home I have been giving myself a cooling off period to regroup and ... • 16. The Power Of Music In Whitney Houston s When You Believe Music has the unique power to influence the attitudes and actions of a person. Whether it is used as a source of hope and soulful reflection on past struggles, like in Whitney Houston s When You Believe, or to draw strength and determination to Olympians in Vangelis Chariots of Fire, music can provide spiritual, inspirational or hope filled meaning. In order to inspire and motivate year 12 students, the electrifying Chariots of Fire is clearly a superior choice compared to the spiritual and soulful When You Believe. This is evident through the analysis of timbre, dynamics and expression and pitch. Through the manipulation of the musical element timbre, it is clear that Chariots of Fire is the favoured selection to inspire and motivate seniors ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Chariots of Fire, the consistent ascending and descending movement in the melodic contour, heard at 0:34 0:50, represents the highs and lows of success, where it is common to get knocked down (seen in the descending phase) and bounce back (seen in the repeated ascension of the melody). This encourages students to be persistent to achieve success. When You Believe also has this wave like contour, highlighted at 1:50 2:05. Unlike Chariots of Fire, this movement gradually ascends during the climaxes of the piece, creating a sense of uplifting hope and celebration rather than inspiration and motivation required. When You Believe contains melismas and passing notes, evident at 1:00 1:20. Whilst this does provide diversity to the piece, the piece loses stability. Dissimilarly, Chariots of Fire does not include this manipulation. This lack of embellishment successfully grounds the piece, conveying a sense of drive and determination, motivating students to work hard. Furthermore, When You Believe has a wide range and register, heard at 2:12 2:25. The use of the high register adds a dream like and free quality to the piece, not suited to the grounding of senior students. Dissimilarly, Chariots of Fire has a medium range and middle register successfully grounding the piece, useful when attempting to motivate senior students. Additionally, the chord progressions throughout Chariots of Fire portray a sense of unity and strength, through the use of block chords. This has not been achieved in When You Believe, where the chords are broken into 3 quavers (evident in bars 2 5), producing a smoother and more subdued mood. The slow harmonic rhythm created by the Db sustained pedal portrays a sense of endurance and reliability, both linking to the physiognomies of the characters in the movie and the ... The US market is also much more price driven, and lingerie (e.g. bras) cost a lot less. In Europe there seems to be a difference between northern and southern countries. In southern Europe they buy more lingerie than in northern Europe. One of the reasons could be that women in southern Europe place more emphasis on feeling romantic and sexy. Also the more intensive sweating in these countries may lead to more purchase of lingerie. Another explanation could be, that the northern countries are colder and women wear thicker clothes, so they are not so worried about how their underwear looks. Liberal Iraq War On September 11, 2001, the world witnessed deadly, psychologically disruptive, and economically devastating terrorist attacks organized and funded by Al Qaeda against New York and Washington, D.C. This event eventually led to the 2003 invasion of Iraq. There are many ways in which the Iraq war and its aftermath support elements of liberalism. Liberals posit that aggression and war cannot be avoided but can be moderated, if not eliminated, through a collective action. They add that institutions are effective in managing self interests thereby making perpetual peace and economic development a possibility. Pertinent elements of liberal IR theory to be discussed are the following: value of multilateral approach, aspect of humanitarian intervention, spread of democracy, and the notion of benign liberal empire. International partnership and multilateral approach to both creating chaos and ensuring security were evident in this historical case. The 9/11 attack, directed by Osama bin Laden, set into ... Each haplogroup can be identified based upon the sum of control and coding region variation compared to the established Cambridge Reference Sequence (rCRS; Figure 1b) (Kim et al., 2013). The coding region variation is diagnostic for most haplogroups (Torroni et al., ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Assess The Difference Between Pluralism And Exclusivism Religious pluralism is an attitude regarding the diversity of religious belief systems in society. It refers to the belief in two or more religious as being equally valid. That means that religious pluralism accepts multiple paths to God. Otsu in the Deep River believes that all religious tradition are imperfect and all religious tradition can bring us closer to the same God. I agreed with these ideas. This paper will explain the religious pluralism, exclusivism, and inclusivism by using the two books: Shusaku Endo s Deep River and Stephen Prothero s God Is Not One . However, inclusivism will sometimes ignore the fact of ungodly elements within religions. Some of inclusivists believe that all the people in the world who is saved by Jesus Christ. Inclusivism attempts to stand between pluralism and exclusivism by agreeing with the latter that one religion has the most value. At the same time, it also agrees with the former by stating that other religions also have significant value. Even though pluralism, exclusivism, and inclusivism have been discussed and criticized a lot, but most of the religious studies and students are all believes that it is the start point about the diversity of religions. If it s seen from the other religions perspective, inclusivism can be seen and described as haughty exclusivist. In another word, it seems like it deny all the religions work. It s like saying that Hindus are not saved by dharma in Hindulism. Muslims are not saved by all strive in Islam. Jesus Christ didn t save all the people. This form of data collection provided high turn in rates allowing researchers to have a wide study scale. According to Hicks, T., amp; Heastie, S., contrasting levels of stress and coping mechanisms were present in these students. It was noted that traditional college students experience more psychological stress than their nontraditional student counterparts. In addition, during the first year of college, the amount of stress experienced by students is the highest in comparison to stress in the remainder of the years. These results are especially important because it stresses the need for a strong health and wellness center within colleges and universities. In contrast to researching adjustment to college life for traditional and nontraditional students, the article by Shankland, R., Genolini, C., Riou França, L., Guelfi, J., amp; Ionescu, S., compared students from a traditional school system to that of an alternative school. In this article, it was noted that alternative schools differ from traditional schools in their teaching methods and philosophy. For this study, 130 students from both types of schools in similar regions were assessed during their final year in high school, the beginning of college, and finally at the end of their first year in college using the State Trait Anxiety Inventory, ... Lightfoot Abstract This paper examines the ability to graphically display frequency distribution tables that are represented within a school setting. There are three types of data sets that are interpreted within two types of frequency distribution tables (see Table 1). The first type of data set that is mentioned is a discrete nominal data set that is graphically displayed as a bar chart (see Figure 1), which displays the reoccurrence of each category within the simple frequency table (see Table 2). The second data type referenced is a discrete ordinal data set that was analyzed through a simple frequency table. The simple frequency table allows for the conversion of the ordinal data into a pie chart (see Figure 2), which measures the percentages within a four point Likert Scale (see Table 3). The final data source is a continuous interval set, which was interpreted through a cumulative frequency table (see table 4). The cumulative frequency table is graphically represented in Figure 3 as a combination of a histogram (which measures the percentage of class intervals) and scatter points (to identify the cumulative percentage between all of the class intervals). Graphically Representing Data Within a School Setting The creation of frequency distribution tables allows for the conversion of the data within the set into a dramatic graphic representation. For me, life was not easy growing up in Atlanta as a black male, as a child I consistently witnessed situations similar to what Sudhir Venkatesh experienced such as gang beatings and the selling of illegal substances. Growing up I moved homes and schools a few times and from this experience I learned that initially you will not be accepted in a certain community, you have to slowly get accustomed to the norms before you are welcomed in. Surprisingly the streets are a very judgmental place, just for being different Venkatesh was called a Mexican and nigger when in fact he was neither. While studying communities, confidentiality is very important but in this research Venkatesh breaks this rule because once he discovered that members of the gang had other sources of income such as babysitting or prostitution. Venkatesh ends up telling JT and Ms. Baily about his findings. This was a problem because after finding out about this information JT and Ms. Baily felt like they were owed more money so they taxed people more money. I didn t like the way Venkatesh considered himself a hustler among hustlers because while conducting research you should be straight forward to the participates and tell them exactly what you are researching. Everything changed the moment she got her license. Suddenly the need for coffee was completely eliminated, and all I had to do was ride to school with her. Through many close encounters and two accidents so far, I have learned the definition of a terrible driver. Every ride with her is an adventure involving skipped stop signs, speeding, and near collisions. She is the reason why many adults believe that teenagers should not their license because of poor driving. The first thing I do when I get inside her car is buckle my seatbelt and prepare myself for the journey ahead. The entire time she is behind the wheel, I am on the edge of my seat checking her speedometer and watching for children and other cars. Subconsciously, my hands curl around the seat belt and tightly grip it when I notice a sharp turn or speed bump ahead. I do my best to not make a sound, but I sometimes catch myself mentioning the turning car ahead. My friend snaps at me and assures me that she knows what she is doing, but I am not convinced. Only when the car is in park and my shoes touch solid ground, am I able to breathe normally. • 46. Does Detecting Breast Cancer with MRIs Increase the Rate... In the last years, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has become a very popular method used for the early detection of breast cancer, because it has greater sensibility than mammography. But, opponents of MRI are concerned about this type of examination because of the belief that it may increase rates of mastectomy. However, different studies have been performed and no proof of this has been recorded (Dang and Zaguiyan et al 937). Although many people think that mastectomy may increase with MRI s, I feel that these types of screenings should be more recommendable for women at high risk for breast cancer, because cancer, if not treated on time might be fatal. Mammography has been traditionally used for breast examination, in order to detect ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They came up with the hypothesis that MRI did not increase rates of mastectomy, and as they expected the results showed that patients considered with early breast cancer, did not make a difference in mastectomy rates (quoted in Dang and Zaguiyan et al 937 938). It is only a presumption that magnetic resonance imaging use contributes to mastectomy, and some do not support this conclusion (Dang and Zaguiyan et al 939). But as the evidence shows, there is no proof that magnetic resonance imaging may cause an increase of mastectomy. I think the real issue is just a matter of controversy, and conclusions seem to have been prematurely made. In the other hand, the fact that Magnetic Resonance Imaging is not affected by breast density has been mentioned repeatedly. Despite its sensitivity, which is greater than ninety five percent, false positive results have been reported, which rates the accuracy of MRI between its thirty seven and ninety seven percent. (Dang and Zaguiyan et al 937). But I personally think that occult breast cancer is a very uncommon presentation. All tests and screenings may have their failures, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging is not an exception. However, I want to make clear that I am not saying that mammograms should be substituted by Magnetic Resonance Imaging for every woman, nor I am saying mammography s use should be discontinued. But, MRI should be recommended as an additional protocol to mammography, for women at very high risk for breast ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Heather Voke of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum responds to one issue, the teacher shortage, by researching the nature of the shortage, its probable causes, problems resulting from the shortage, and frequently recommended policy changes. According to Voke (2003), 42 percent of all teachers leaving depart for lack of job satisfaction, to pursue another career, or better career opportunities. Low salaries and lack of public respect also impacts teacher retention. Policy recommendations to retain teachers include: salary increases, high quality induction programs, prohibit out of field teaching, include teachers in decision making, developing current teachers, collaboration with universities to attract and train teachers, and reduce class size. Voke suggests that policy makers and educational leaders do not understand the nature of the teacher shortage.
