GEO2313 – Theory, Space, Society 1 Candidate Number: 630012188 Using examples, critically
evaluate the different roles that theoretical ideas can play in shaping research in human geography.
In using Edward Said's theory of orientalism as a reference point for analysis, this essay will explore
the different ways in which an academic theory can shape geographical research, with a particular
focus on the fields of imaginative geographies and postcolonial geographies. This inquiry will focus
on Said's (1978) seminal text "Orientalism: Western Conceptions of the Orient" and its influences on
both academic and social worlds since the twentieth century. D. Gregory's interpretations and other
studies of orientalism in contemporary culture will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Said claims that this practice of representation creates a hierarchical relationship between the
'Orient' and the 'Occident', with the 'West' establishing a cultural hegemony over the inferior 'East'.
Subsequently, orientalism is viewed as an epistemological device for guaranteeing Western control
over the 'Orient'. In "Orientalism" Said (1978) outlines the two crucial operations of orientalist
practices : firstly, the 'Orient' was constructed as a wild space that had to be normalised and
disciplined via a forceful 'Occident' who had to project their perception of order and control over the
'East' (Gregory et al. 2009:513). Secondly, the 'Orient' was presented as an exotic and bizarre region;
a "living tableau of queerness" and in complete contrast to GEO2313 – Theory, Space,
Society 2 Candidate Number: 630012188 the 'West' (Said, 1978:103). According to Said, the Orient
is the "cultural contestant, and one of its deepest and most recurring images of the Other" (1978:1).
This essentialist distinction allows the 'Orient' to be seen as a mystical space which is always
presented as 'other' in contrast to the normalised 'West'. Orientalism can subsequently be seen as a
system of cultural misrepresentation which is created to consolidate "European–Atlantic power over
the Orient" (Said, 1978:6). The methods of binary logic imposed via orientalist practices is

It Ain ' T Me, Babe Is A Creative And Imaginative Broad...
IT AIN'T ME, BABE is a creative and imaginative broad comedy. The concept is fun and a nice
setup for comedy, conflict, and character change. The script is driven by the theme of second
chances.
There's definitely a lot to like about this script. On the other hand, there are also areas that would
benefit from more development.
First the script opens rather mildly. The idea that the music store is in jeopardy of being taken over
or closed down certainly is workable, but a bit outdated, meaning this type of plot beat (being
evicted etc.) has been used several times before.
Given that there's a theme about "time" perhaps the story should begin in Dave's past showing the
end of his career with his band. This could set up his inner conflict about missing out on a more
"famous" life versus being "almost" famous. Then the structure can transition to the present day
storyline of him working in the record shop.
It would also be nice to set up Dave as a man that regrets some of his life decisions and wishes he
could go back to the past and undo them. Right now, the scenes in the opening and with Jane simply
are not the most engaging. The characters feel a bit immature and "old fashioned."
On the other hand, the opening pages does foreshadow events with Amanda, Gary's desire to be a
manager, and the city undergoing new development in which the past seems to be disappearing.
There's a solid and fun inciting event when Dave finds the old antique listening booth. This is the

The Young Gladiator
Marcus anxiously awaited his turn to fight. The crowd was cheering and roaring as two slaves
fought each other in the arena. Even though this was just a prelude to the main event the crowd was
enthralled the action. He watched on nervously as they slashed and stabbed at each other. They
weren 't inflicting serious damage on each other because they were both fast and wary of the other 's
attacks. There were no major wounds inflicted yet but after a few minutes of dancing around each
other one of them managed to just catch the other 's leg and they fell down into the sand. The soon
to be champion stood above him, sword pointing at their neck. He looked up to the crowd; awaiting
their verdict. At this point it was the Emperor and the crowd 's decision whether they survived or
not. The crowd shouted to have him killed, pointing their thumbs down as the signal for death. With
one quick stab, it was over. Some of the guards walked over to drag the dead body off as the
champion walked around the arena basking in the crowd 's cheers. There were tens of thousands of
people in the crowd excited for the upcoming fight. The Emperor was one of them. He was sitting in
a much less crowded area; surrounded by his elite praetorian guard and his servants. He was
wearing his most lavish toga and was drinking some fine Italian wine. The fights in the arena were a
fortnightly event but it was rare for the Emperor to turn up to view one.

Imaginative Staffing Inc
The days of selling to a buyer alone are slowing dying. Companies sell products that have a wide
effect on the client and require approval from many levels. Success in complex sales is the result of
clear planning and effective execution. This requires careful coordination of many resources on both
the selling and client side throughout the sales process. What is team–selling? Team–selling is using
the resources of a company to sell an account using all relevant decision makers. The goal of team–
selling is establishing long, lasting profitable relationships between people, product, and companies.
Team–selling provides an ideal process for account managers and specialists to work together to

Planning Presentations
Sales presentations should be simple not overwhelming with information a customer may not be
able to remember. The goal of a sales presentation is to sell a solution to a customer, that solution
being the product or service of the salesperson. A presentation must be relevant, make a connection
with the product and the prospect, be to point, use showmanship, be animated, use physical
demonstration, and belief in the product.
In a team–selling environment, one person could give the presentation, one could answer questions,
or however the team decides to set up the presentation. The one thing that should not happen is each
person give there own presentation on the same product; do not confuse the customer. All team
members should be clear on roles and responsibilities. A team should always be together so all
members give the same answers and information to the customer.
Selecting and Recruiting
When hiring salespeople set of qualifications and a job description with the duties the salesperson
will do should be established. Many companies use outside agencies to help screen and find the best
candidates, with some candidates working on a temporary basis. Time, organizational and territory
management skills will be extremely important in a candidate for a sales position. Recruitment
should be a continuous activity, allowing for top applicants

Imaginative Dreams
Although everyone has great imaginative dreams, often they don't come true, which is quite
disappointing. Throughout the novel Of Mice and Men, Lennie, George, Curley's Wife, and Candy
all experienced disappointing dreams. All the characters had unfinished dreams of things that
factored into the character they became. For example, if Curley's wife was a movie star, she
wouldn't have been murdered by Lennie. With the unfinished dreams of ambition and aspiration in
Of Mice and Men, dreams as a whole play an important role in the characters lives. Lennie and
George's farm inspired Candy with the dream of joining them on their farm, even willing to put most
of his money towards it. As Candy expresses in the novel, "they gave me two hundred and fifty
dollars 'cause I los my hand. An I...I could cook and tend the chickens and hoe the garden some.
How'd that be?" (59). To george this was a great opportunity, so quickly George took Candy up on
this offer. This shows how Candy had a strong desire to join Lennie and George on their farm. A lot
of the men on the farm aren't very wealthy, so Candy saying he would put three hundred and fifty
dollars towards the farm. Although the farm was pleasant dream, it was never fulfilled. George,
Lennie, and Candy all had faith that one day they would be men of their very own farm. Candy's
dream of a farm all started from George and Lennie, George has the master plan for it all, and
Lennie kindly follows in his footsteps. Lennie follows George

Summary Of The Watsons Go To Birmingham
In the story, "The Watsons go to Birmingham" by Christopher Paul–Curtis, the main character
Kenny is smart, imaginative, and caring. He is smart with school and people, imaginative
underneath all of the smarts, and caring towards his family.
Kenny is smart with school, he is smart with people, and he has insight into his parent's relationship.
Kenny is so smart in school, the other kids called him "Poindexter". Henry tells his tale of being a
more advanced reader in, "Teachers started treating me differently than other kids when I was in the
first grade. At first I thought it was cool for them to think I was smart, but then I found out it made
me enemies with the other kids. Back when I was in the second grade, Miss Henry used to take me
to a different classroom to read stuff out of the Bible or the newspaper in front of the other kids."
(Curtis 22). Kenny also is "people smart". He's perceptive, which means he's good at figuring out
how other people are feeling by just watching them closely. For example, Kenny knows his mother
repeats herself when she's mad, and he can always tell when Byron is about to get into trouble or
pull a prank. He could tell that something is up when Byron is alone. "I was up in the bedroom
looking at comic books when I heard Byron go into the bathroom and lock the door. I knew that
something was up , since he only locked the door when he had something to hide." (Curtis 65).

The Sociological Imagination Is Using Imaginative Thoughts...
1. Sociological imagination is using imaginative thoughts and processes to answer sociological
questions. This is to think your way to a different perspective to achieve a better understanding of
something. Sociology is the study of society, culture, and human nature. The goal is to understand
what makes and changes societies. Manifest functions are consequences that are known, such as
punishments for breaking laws. Latent functions are consequences that are not known, like a
consequence that is positive or negative but not explicitly recognized.
2. Émile Durkheim's study of suicide revealed that humans are social creatures and that how a
person interacts with others shapes how they act. I am taking this class for my minor because I
believed it would be appropriate to minor in sociology while majoring in psychology. A "deeper"
reason could be because I intend to work with people and while I am learning about the individual, I
feel a need to learn about how society affects the individual as well.

By allowing Liesl to escape from trouble when she sneaks out of the house, Maria shows the

conspicuously, Maria is incredibly sympathetic, but she is also extremely imaginative. Maria has a
vast imagination when she makes "play clothes" for the children from the curtains which hang in her
room. This proves Maria is imaginative because knowing the Von Trapp children have sailor–suit
uniforms of their own, she makes clothes that are not in the children's social class, to wear to their
fun adventures for instance boating and tree climbing. Although the Captain does not give her fabric
for the clothes, Maria's creative imagination develops ideas to make them. Captain explains that "

imaginative because she desires the children to have a marvelous time and forget about all the rules

Reading Summary (SOST 801)
Topic: Beyond Disciplinary Confinement to Imaginative Transdisciplinarity.
INTRODUCTION
The society today is faced with various problems. Some have always been there, others are new to
us, yet others have evolved from their older modes and taken new dimensions. For example we are
not strangers to issues of democratization, but certainly are faced with the changing mode of war
and terrorism. And then, new issues may include climate change. Whatever the category, man's
eternal struggle is to be able to resolve the issues that confront or threaten its existence. To do this
man depends on knowledge gained from studying the problems. However, as problems evolve, they
seem to become resistant to existing approaches, or at least, we seem not to be able to resolve them
using existing approaches. Thus those problems become wicked problems. In this chapter, we
discuss how such problems can be resolved using transdisciplinary approach.
WHY TRANSDICIPLINARITY?
The relevance of the transdisciplinarity approach is seen in the nature of the problem. Since
problems are now multidimensional, then we agree that a single approach will not sufficiently
resolve it (Brown 2010:16). Hence we need a transdiciplinary approach.
In chapter two of Brown (2010:16), there are some other reasons why we need a transdiciplinary
approach to wicked problems. They are:
1. Existing scientific approaches are to specialized or

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne Essay
A world in which old men can be degraded and abused, a world in which people wearing dirty,
unwashed, striped uniforms are not seen as being oppressed, a world in which a starving boy of
identical age yet vastly different physique is seen as simply being unfortunate – such a world cannot
exist. Or can it? In the world of Bruno, this is precisely the way the world is.
John Boyne's book "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" invites the readers to embark on an
imaginative journey at two levels. At the first level, Boyne himself embarks upon an imaginative
journey that explores a possible scenario in relation to Auschwitz. Bruno is a 9 year old boy growing
up in a loving, but typically authoritarian German family in the 1930?s. His father is a ... Show more

At the end of the book Boyne shows the personal disintegration that can occur when a person is
forced to confront this disconnect ? in the case of the book, with the realisation by Bruno's father
that his son has actually gone into the camp and has suffered the same fate as Schmuel and his
people.
Boyne also undergoes an imaginative journey in this book as his past childhood imagination
inspired him to create a novel that explores the necessity of imaginative journeys. It is interesting to
note that this story is totally remote from Boyne?s own experience. Research on Boyne indicates
that he was brought up in a stable family where his father worked in the insurance industry and his
mother was a home–maker. There is nothing to indicate that any part of his personal background
could have contributed to the terrible realism portrayed in this work. One clue as to the source of his
imaginative journey may be found in the fact that, as a child, he was an avid reader who loved
fiction such as Enid Blyton and the Narnia series.
The closest we get to fully understanding Boyne?s imaginative journey comes from an interview
with Bookreporter.com where he states: "As an Irishman growing up in the 1970s and 1980s, I was
only too aware of the divides ––– the fences ––– that existed in my own country, and that caused
violence and killing for families throughout Northern Ireland for too many years. And while those
problems have for the most part been solved,

Different Definitions Of Being Creative
Option B Many people have activities that are significant to them that certain activity can be
described as being a special part of them, for me it would be being creative. The definition of being
creative in the dictionary is relating to or involving the imagination or original ideas, especially in
the production of artistic work. Though, there are many different definitions of being creative in the
world. What I will show the reader is what being creative means to me and why it's significant. Now
there are reasons for why this is significant to me, one gets to be imaginative, artistic, and they get to
travel, but there is more to it than that. First, in being creative for me splits into different things I get
to do while being creative and that the first thing would be being imaginative. Imaginative means to
have a big imagination thus thinking of new ideas or things and thinking of possibilities in my mind
that don't seem real. Seeing images of what I want to do then converting them to dreams or goals I
have. Ever since I can remember I have been imaginative also thinking always picturing it's been
carved into my brain and memory. The first time I started to figure out that I wanted to always be
creative was when my mom announced we would be going to Florida. That's when my imaginative
mind came to a place and started imagining what it would be like what I would be able to do there.
Would I have fun what would happen when I get there because we were going to Florida

Huckleberry Finn And Tom Compare And Contrast
In the adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain gives all the main characters there own

has grand visions and imaginative dreams fueled by the fact that he has read one too many
adventure novels in his day. As a result, he complicates every single issue in order to make it more
adventurous, fun and exciting. Huck knows how to get out of things faster and easier than what Tom
does This makes Huck more logical than Tom. Huck is also smarter because he does the right things.
He also can tell the difference between what's wrong and what's wrong. Jim is both imaginative and

Her domestic landscape shapes her. Her connection to her mother makes her a kinder and

colder. This shows the difference that the level of connectedness can make on an individual's
identity. I will compare her story to her cousins, whose father being the older brother of the dad
grew up the same way. His story is however different, he perceives the disconnectedness as a threat,
whereas the girl perceives is a thing that just happens. Even though living with a similar father
figure, the ways that two grow up is different. She is more optimistic and laidback while the cousin

What A Work Of Art Is And How It Comes Into Being
Collingwood begins his discussion by exploring what a work of art is and how it comes into being.
He states that others have come to the conclusion that art is not produced by accident, but that it is
produced by some controlling force that resides in the unconscious of the artist (Collingwood).
Collingwood summarizes some of the theories that exist on how art comes into being but concludes
that theorizing is not best approach to answering the questions about art (Collingwood). He believes
that theorists over look simple answers and jump to more complicated theories than are necessary
(Collingwood). Collingwood states that the activity that voluntarily produces is called creation
(Collingwood). Theologians often use the word creation to describe God's making of the world and
therefore some may see a problem with using the world for art (Collingwood). However, the word
create is also used daily to talk about items that have nothing to do with God (Collingwood).
According to Collingwood, creating something refers to making that is non–technical, happens
voluntarily, does not require an end, has a plan, and does not transform raw material (Collingwood).
Therefore, the making of art is referred to as creating. Collingwood makes some important
distinctions in order to clarify his argument. First, he clarifies the distinction between creation that is
related to God and creation that is related to art (Collingwood). He asserts that creation from God is
creation in which no

Purly Imaginative Subject by Gary J. Kornblith
An essay written by Gary J. Kornblith, the main focus is on a purely imaginative subject. The use of
this counterfactual approach is widely accepted as a methodology in research of causation.
According to Kornblith, counterfactual exercises are necessary to "think more clearly about
causation and to distinguish between essential factors and coincidental developments"(79). He uses
the counterfactual method to present the idea that if Henry Clay had been elected in 1844, which he
goes on to prove as plausible, we would be in a much different country. The thesis as a whole is
stated as "... My focus is on a different pair of wars: the Mexican–American War of 1846–1848 and
the American Civil War of 1861–1865... Rather than project a different military outcome, I posit the
absence of the Mexican–American War...The key to peace in my counterfactual scenario is a victory
by Henry Clay over James K. Polk in the very close presidential election of 1844... As a result Texas
would almost certainly have remained an independent republic in 1845, and the United States would
not have gone to war with Mexico the following year. Based as it is on a highly plausible turn of
events, this counterfactual scenario promises to advance our understanding of the causes of the Civil
War"(77). He then adds the fact that there are two viewpoints that come from this counterfactual
exercise; Revisionists, who believe that the Civil War could have been avoided, despite the sectional
differences, and

By the chattering and shouting I heard in the morning, seems as though Chris hadn't come back last

Janet Burroway Voice Summary
In chapter three of Imaginative Writing, "Voice", Janet Burroway identifies three important concepts
of voice; irony, character voice, and point of view that allows a writer to explore the inner lives of
other. First, the irony is a contradiction that emphasizes the voice of someone. Burroway states,
"verbal irony, is a way of using voice. It is achieved by some sort of mismatch between the tone and
the content and is capable of myriad effects: serious, comic, threatening, satirical, and so forth"
(Burroway, 52). The use of verbal irony involves speaking that convey a message opposite of the
meaning, it's often humorous and engages the audience to dig deeper understanding. Another

The Consequence of Reading Fiction In his essay "Formative Fictions: Imaginative Literature and
the Training of the Capacities", Joshua Landy, professor at Stanford University, aims to explain the
function of fiction and the reward of our engagement with literary works. Landy highlights three
theories of the function of fiction: the exemplary branch, which invites the reader to consider
characters as models for emulation or avoidance, the affective branch, which focuses on what fiction
does to our emotions, and the cognitive branch, that believes that fictions grants us access to
knowledge. Landy is specifically interested in "formative fiction", works "whose function it is to
fine–tune our mental capacities" (Landy 183). The purpose is not to acquire a superior
understanding of the story, but to practice methods that allow readers to take an active stance
towards works, whether it be picking holes in the logic or mending those holes. Rather than
describing what happens to readers, he emphasizes that readers ought to do something with
formative fictions that admittedly, they can easily fail to do. Landy argues that readers who look for
a moral or message of a novel have misinterpreted the purpose of literature, which is not to have a
genuine connection to the reader's lives. While accepting that his theory is not universal and only
applies to some literary works, Landy's new option for interpreting texts, his

and his friend C. Auguste Dupin, after finding out about an intriguing murder, find themselves
trying to free an innocent man and find the real beast behind the murders in the rue morgue.
Through Poe's use of symbolism and vivid imagery, the theme of the story is revealed as the struggle
between the analytical, emotional, and imaginative. The Murders in the Rue Morgue presents a
recurring theme of the battle between the analytical, emotional, and imaginative. In the beginning of
the story, Poe describes a chess battle in great detail, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the paragraphs depicting the murder scene, Poe writes, "Upon the floor were found four
Napoleons, an ear–ring of topaz, three large silver spoons, three smaller of métal d'Alger, and two
bags, containing nearly four thousand francs in gold." These items that are strewn across the house
are red herrings. The reader thinks that they are important to finding out who committed the murder
when in reality they are not. This conflicts us as readers, because what we are analyzing and what is
in front of us is irrelevant, and we are forced to rely on our imagination – or in this case, Dupins'.
Another example is the gruesome description of the murder victims, "...lay the corpse of the old
lady, with her throat so entirely cut that, upon an attempt to raise her, the head fell off. The body, as
well as the head, was fearfully mutilated..." This raw imagery gives the readers mixed emotions, all
while they try to analyze the evidence. They are faced with the same problem that plagued the
Prefect of Police: they only look at the obvious evidence, overlooking any other possibilities. The
imagery that Poe uses in the Murders in the Rue Morgue puts us in the place of Auguste C. Dupin
and the Prefect of Police, challenging us to solve the crime as we are berated with fact, possibilities,
and our own human

According to Arp and Johnson, "Literary fiction plunges us, through the author's imaginative vision
and artistic ability, more deeply into the real world, enabling us to understand life's difficulties and
to empathize with others." In the story The Metamorphosis by Kafka he uses his genius imaginative
vision and artistic ability, making us understand and feel empathy toward his main character,
Gregor. Kafka uses a tremendous amount of symbolism and metaphors to get us to feel the mood in
the story and in general life's difficulties. In the story, Gregor wakes up on a rainy day to go to work

Once Gregor is turned into this cockroach, his family is tested and fails to show the love and loyalty
a family should indeed give each other no matter what. That's when the empathy is at full throttle.
Gregor is completely rejected and abandoned by his family, not even a word spoken to him from the
people that pretended to love him and Kafka shows this truth that there is no such thing as
unconditional love. Gregor's family does not try to help him but instead they feel ashamed and try to
hide him. They do not think of his feelings or how much he has done for them, instead they want to
get rid of him, "We must try to get rid of it" (500) said the sister, "She's right a thousand times over"
(500) the father said to himself. Gregor did not deserve, nor do they ever explain why it happened;
he seemed like the perfect brother and son, supporting them financially and physically. Which gave
me this notion, "Everything happens for a reason"; even though Gregor ends up dying he was killing
himself in the story as a human to feed, pay and give to his parents and his sister when they did not
even deserve it. His family could not function without him and when Gregor is turned they finally
have to shift to supporting themselves. Kafka shows such vulnerability to events way beyond our
control. The fact that Gregor becomes alienated from his family, isolated in this dark room and with
such mistreatment from the people who are

Racial tensions are high in the United States currently. Donald Trump's campaign has put

Sherlock Holmes Vs Duin Research Paper
Sherlock Holmes and Dupin are both very good detectives, however they both have their merits and
disadvantages. In this essay I will argue that Sherlock Holmes makes a better Detective than Dupin.
Dupin is arrogant, selfish, and imaginative, while Sherlock Holmes is Selfless, Confident, and he is
also imaginative like Dupin, but he does not let that imagination interfere with is work. Even though
Dupin and Sherlock Holmes both have merit with imagination, Sherlocks ability to not let his

he may not always get his case right. Dupin is a very arrogant person an observation is made

Imaginative Writing- My Friend from Neptune Essays
I remember everything like if it was yesterday. It was a feeling I could never explain. It was the
weirdest thing that had ever happened to me, or to anyone. That day was also the best, exciting, fun
but also sad. I've never experience anything like it. I woke up because of the loud, creepy, scratchy
noise I heard. A noise you only hear when an ancient truck is passing by. This was weird here, in
Beverly Hills. I got up, and put my pink robe on I needed to know what was happening outside. I
couldn't believe what was in my sight. It was a huge, oval, metallic thing. For me to look like an

Identification is the first of the four steps in this process. Any user that expects to gain access to a
system referred to as a supplicant, and the tool that every user who gains entry to the network,

supplicant. The identifier should be able to locate the users ' credentials from a database of unique
information that determines the supplicants ' identity. The most common form of verification is
through using the employees first and last name. In case there happen to be colleagues with common
names, such as John Doe, employee Id 's or Social Security numbers remain utilized. In a good
number of companies, they are no longer using the employee 's Social Security number to identify

of solely beauty. An opposite practice of todays societal norms of reaching to be the same as

Reminding me that everyone has their own struggles in society and it is okay to have your own

feminist thought leaving the youths' perspective on minority groups to be judgemental and usually
causing bullying to take place in the school environment. An alternative project to improve society
is to teach children about intersectionality through a mandatory Feminist Camp for school age

The Wind in the Willows Essay
The Wind in the Willows
The Wind in the Willows (published in 1908) by Kenneth Grahame is a children's fictional novel set
in England during the early 20th century. This allegory from the stimulus booklet evokes feelings of
magic and adventure but also feelings of reflection as we relate the actions of Ratty, Mole and Toad
to our lives.Grahame evokes an imaginative journey within the mind of the reader as he questions
"Which journey's do we take that we really want to experience?" Kenneth Grahame conveys this
idea through Mole who is being forced to take Ratty's journey instead of his own. This text broadens
our understanding of the world today in that it helps us to undertsand the complex interactions

Camps, villages, town's cities". This vivid description of what he anticipates creates imagery in the
minds of the audience allowing them to enter the imaginative realm of Toads journey.
In this extract Kenneth Grahame creates exaggeration within the characters to effectively fuel the
imagination of the audience. The audience is sent on an imaginative journey as they picture the
different facial expressions, changing body language and personalities of the characters. For
example "The rat only snorted and thrust his hands deep into his pocket", "cried the Toad, straddling
and expanding himself", "said Toad imploringly", "followed him eagerly" etc. The reader can
interprete the nature and personality of the characters more precisely through exaggeration because
they are able to picture them in their imagination.
The use of exaggeration is effective as it allows the true nature of the character to be expressed in
the writing, for example "said Toad imploringly" illustrates how Toad is desperate and pleaing to
Ratty, however if the text only contained "said Toad" then the true nature of Toad would not be
evoked in the audiences imagination.
'The Wind in the Willows' uses the technique of anthropomorphism. This feature is visually
appealing to the audience as the animals seem less threatening and it sends the reader into a fantasy
world full of magical and adventurous thoughts. The audience can effectively engage with the
human traits shown by the

Children and Their Imgainary Play
Introduction
Children show their highest level of intelligence through their play. It opens new possibilities in
thinking and develops emotional intelligence making their feelings manageable. Play also helps
build a sense of self and relationships with others. One type of play that has an important role on a
child's development is imaginative play. In this essay I will focus on what imaginative play is, the
types of imaginary play, skills and attributes imaginary play develops and the roles practitioners
play in helping a child develop their imaginative flow.
Children and Their Imaginary Play
Play is the basic activity of early years childhood. Children are able to absorb and display and
understanding of the world around them while simultaneously expressing their personality, sense of
self, intellect, social capacity and physicality. Fromberg and Bergen (2007) describes Paget's four
stages of play that get more complex as the child develops. The stages being, imaginative play,
constructive plays, functional play and 'games with rules'. Consequently, it can be argued that
imaginative play, being the first stage, builds on skills learned through imaginative play, preparing
children for circumstances involving rules. Briggs and Hanse (2012) explain Bodrova disagreement
that rules are top priority in imaginary play. The rules therefore are determined by the imaginary
roles the children take on. Imaginary play is incorporated into other forms of play and involves a

The Beatles – primarily John Lennon.
The song "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds", performed by The Beatles, written in the year 1967,
by John Lennon, takes the listener on a journey into the imagination. The most common
interpretation of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" is that the lyrics of the song follow the journey
that one would embark on after taking the drug LSD which would project wild imaginings. Other
interpretations of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" are that Lennon had a girlfriend named Lucy

In "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds", there is a lot of imagery; these following examples make it
very easy to project the pictures of the song into the mind. Imagery is shown by lines such as
"cellophane flowers of yellow and green" and "marmalade skies" these lines give the listener a sense
of being there, and being able to see what the composer has portrayed in the song.
The second person technique combined with the technique of imagery, created by alliteration,
"tangerine trees" and "plasticine porters" which helps the description stand out, and adjectives such
as "newspaper taxis".
There are some techniques that are harder to find, and be easily looked–over. This is shown in the
starting line of each verse is innocent and would maybe appeal to a child's mind. For example the
"newspaper taxis" appearing on the shore could refer to paper boats appearing on the shore.
This text explores the journey as means of searching for something as throughout the song, the
listener is told to "look for the girl with the sun in her eyes" who appears difficult to find. Not until
the end of the song and, the end of the journey, the "girl with kaleidoscope eyes" is found. It seems
that she was the purpose of the journey into the imaginative world.
This song relates to journeys because it is believed to be an acid trip, it is a journey through John

Pan's Labyrinth Comparison
In my opinion, the story with the imaginative overlay is the better story. The reason for this is
because the 'real' story made Ofelia look like a helpless, pitiful girl who could not control the
situation around her, whereas in the 'imaginative story', Ofelia is portrayed as anything but! In the
'imaginative story', Ofelia was able to contribute to her situation even if most of it ended up not
helping her condition at all – she was powerful and resourceful. Even though all her efforts
ultimately went to waste, I really admire the kind of message Ofelia's character spreads: despite her
poorly condition she was able to take action by herself and did not rely on others. She was not a
damsel in distress but her own kind of hero. Another thing that cannot be overlooked is that without
the 'imaginative' overly, the story of Pan's Labyrinth would have been nothing but a dull tragedy.
The real story is stained with tragedy so with this imaginative overlay, the viewer can enjoy this

Finally, another way of looking at this is through what knowledge we have of Ofelia. From what we
know, Ofelia is an avid reader and mostly she reads fairytales with beautiful princesses and perfect

story' can be seen as Ofelia's attempt to recreate her fairytales so that her life resembles them but in
a more adventurous way. Her imaginative story is a way through which she in eventually able to
meet her father, her life seems like it has a happy ending and the overlay makes her seem like a
strong princess fighting for her people and kingdom rather than a pitiful victim of trauma and misery

Imaginative
Imaginative can be defined as artistic, dreamy, and poetic (WikiHow, 2008). Anyone being
imaginative can enjoy life at all events. Innovation involves developing the imaginative mindset. It
involves clearing the mind of preconceptions, value judgments and expectations (Halls, 2006). In
order for an employee to be imaginative, he or she must be inquisitive, ask questions and learn
something new ever minute. It is good to be a good listener as well putting themselves in different
situations narrated by different people. Being imaginative can increase the ability to fulfill any goal
or desires by using affirmation techniques. There are no boundaries to imagination, only a limit to
the amount of experiences that feed it. In order to be imaginative, people have to position
themselves to be imaginative. Be daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will assert
integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play–it–safers, the creatures of the
commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary (Beaton, 2008).

Inspirational is being inspired to do something. In the workplace, management problems disappear

The significance of children's imaginative play is presented from the perspective of Descriptive
Psychology and in particular Ossorio's Dramaturgical model of persons. The fluidity of imaginative
play, the imitation of and creation of social practices and options within play as well as the
opportunity to switch roles and act according to reasons of another, contribute to the development of

The self and self concept The psychoanalytic theorists (Freud, Erikson) see children playing out
negative emotions in a safe context. Children are attempting to regain control in situations of
conflict. Mead stresses the importance of role playing in children's play, which activity contributes
to a child's sense of self (Verenikina et al, 2003). Erikson (1963, p.240) in describing a young client
struggling with the wartime death of his father, a pilot, illustrates the healing value of play: "...he
was observed swooping down a hill on a bicycle, endangering, scaring, yet deftly avoiding other
children.... In watching him, and hearing the strange noises he made, I could not help thinking that
he again imagined himself to be an airplane on a bombing mission. But at the same time he gained
in playful mastery over his locomotion; he exercised circumspection in his attack, and he became an

This description of a young boy playing imaginatively illustrates elements that theorists over the
years have attributed to the value of play. His role play was distinctly social as others witnessed his
attack, and his actions increased his stature, his prestige among his friends. His ability to handle the
bike, his cognitive strength, "circumspection in his attack", as he swoops down the hill, is noted as
well. His self esteem increased to the extent that he

The Romantic period, a time that writers such as Wordsworth and Shelley focused their writing in

power and terrors of the inner imaginative life ' (Watson, 2012, p. 1). The Prelude celebrates
Wordsworth 's life retained through memories and with the act of remembering, depicting emotions
and experiences. Whereas, Shelley and the 'Ode to the West Wind ' engaged his audience with inner
and outer lives situations, ideas and elements of nature that represent his own position and ideas.
This essay will compare and contrast Wordsworth recollections and Shelley dramatizations of the

reasons for the use of assonance and alliteration, and other poetic techniques. Finally, how do these

the soul, but also somehow from outside ' (The Open University, 2012, Romantic authorship,

power, that creates debates to what is real and or subjective. The Romantic period required authors

Intermodal Containers Moving Freight
The advancement in technology and imaginative techniques, the procedures and systems of how
cargo is moved and handled is streamlined. Prior to containerization, moving freight from one
location to another across the globe was a tedious practice and often took an extended amount of
time. Manufacturers would use various configurations with dissimilar sizes and weights which led to
additional time at each location being required to handle the different sized cargo. The use of
intermodal containers has changed the shipping industry allowing for multiple modes of
transportation to rapidly cross load the containers and mover the containers to the next destination.

There were significant delays in cross loading cargo onto the ship, workers would have to stack like
packages, construct shipping pallets, and block and brace items in the hulls of the ships as well as
the decks. When a piece of cargo was too large or heavy it would require additional material
handling equipment to move the freight to the next transportation mode being either rail or road. At
the receiving port there was also a time delay due to the need to offload the cargo by individual
piece and separate in on the dock. Road and rail transportation were very effective, but encountered
similar delays and issues depending on the size and weight of the cargo. This resulted in a call for
change in the way freight is transported among all modes of transport. The Department of
Transportation Federal Highway Administration identified the need to implement change which is
topic in the Intermodal Surface Transportation Act of 1991 (ISTEA). Outlining what intermodal

Subtext In Amy Bloom's Imaginative Writing
The concept of subtext is the unspoken dialogue that lies underneath the story. The subtext usually
expresses feelings like sexual tension, anger, hurt, sadness, and more without directly saying those
words. With subtext, the readers get to experience the character's unspoken thoughts and sometimes
help understand why characters do what they do. In Imaginative Writing, Janet Burroway comments
on the importance of subtext in page 270 by stating that, "Subtext is a necessary result and cost of
civilization –If everyone went around saying what they meant all the time, there would be fewer
friends and a lot more pain–but it offers a glorious opportunity for art". People don't always say
what they mean and although that can make things unclear, it is for the best. If everyone went
around saying what they felt or thought, all the time problems would arise. Amy Bloom's, "The
Story" is a great example of how important subtext can add to the plot. The protagonist, Janet,
throughout the whole story has almost two completely different personas. However, the other
characters do not know this. The other characters only see what the protagonist, wants them to see.
This story is full of subtext with the main character seeming innocent and trustworthy to others.
Throughout the book Janet's actions seem noble she befriends Sandra who confides her secrets to
her. Despite Sandra being an awful mother, a cheater, and a person who takes advantage of her
patients her demise is in part of Janet.

Imaginative Thinking : The Real World And True Living
Imaginative Thinking: How it Leads to Authentic and Effective Living
Oprah Winfrey stated that "to be present is to be fully alive. And there is no true life without
presence." While this can be arguably true, it can also be proven wrong. There are different
perspectives on what is considered to be the real world and "true living". One must ask, what does it
mean to be living in the present? Does it mean to be fully engaged in the current moment or doing
what brings happiness? There are different opinions on this idea, one being that it is harmful for one
not to live in the present and another being that the use of counterfactual thinking can benefit one's
life. In "Alone Together," Sherry Turkle discusses how using technology to escape reality is
detrimental to the authenticity of relationships. She stated that in order to have a genuine
relationship, there should be more interaction within the real world. In the same manner, Janet
Flammang in " The Taste for Civilization: Food, Politics, and Civil Society," explains how the
avoidance of face–to–face communication can cause a lack of connection with the real world.
However, in "Possible Worlds: Why Do Children Pretend?"Alison Gopnik argues that while
referring back to counterfactuals can be harmful, it can also be helpful. Counterfactuals allow us to
live in the past rather than fully living in the present. Focusing on the past can be beneficial to the
present because past experiences can help aid upcoming endeavors.

How Does Jean Jacques Rousseau Influence On Childhood
Jean–Jacques Rousseau was a philosopher in the 18th century who studied the way children interact
with each other in a playful setting. His theories concerning childhood development have impacted
many progressive educational theories still in use today. However, his work is not supported by the
popular childhood theories of the present age; for example, Rousseau speaks out against imaginative
play in his work Emile, which is currently considered to be a historical milestone in early and
middle childhood research. Rousseau believed that imaginative play would set children on the road
to unhappiness and dissatisfaction throughout life. Though Rousseau's ideas may be factually
inaccurate, his views that are presented in Emile still impacts childhood ... Show more content on

Many childhood theorists have delineated the importance of childhood imaginative play as it
encourages children to differentiate between the "world in their heads" and the "world outside"
(Shuffelton, 2012, p. 314). Child theorist Amy Shuffelton (2012) commented on the importance of
imaginative play by stating: Also, children use imaginative play as a means to gain the emotional
competence to handle the various hurdles life places in their paths. In happier situations, children
play out interpersonal conflicts and thereby become able to resolve the real ones; in horrific
situations, children have used imaginative play as a means to cope with the terrors around them. (p.
314) Imaginative play encourages children to think outside of the box and broadens their
understanding of the world around them. Current research suggests that children who consistently
use their imaginations and can differentiate between real and make–believe actually end up with
higher achievements later in life (Shuffelton, 2012). Imaginative play can have a long lasting effect
on the way a child develops and should be taken into account by both parents and educators.

Imaginative Journeys
An imaginative journey can be defined as an extension of reality that transcends physical barriers.
Through the use of abstract notions and an element of surrealism, an imaginative journey can result
in distortion of the boundaries between imagination and reality. This type of journey involves
readers by drawing on their imagination and can therefore result in the transformation of perceptions
and attitudes, which may also stimulate a sense of enlightenment for both the characters and the
responder. These characteristics are evident in the three texts I have studied, "The Tempest" by
William Shakespeare, Victor Fleming's, "The Wizard of Oz" and "Sky High" by Hannah Robert.

Initially, Dorothy longs for a place where she can be freed from the all the struggles of her current
life, and the world that she and her companions are taken into, is a world which will aid each and
every one of them in a journey of self–discovery and awakening. For each of the characters, their
radical transformations are stimulated through the hindrances and limitations faced by the characters
within the imaginative journey. The use of colour is important in "The Wizard of Oz" as it helps to
distinguish realism from idealism. The real events occurring in Kansas (Dorothy's home town) are
portrayed in chromatic colours and provide meaning and emphasis on the imaginative journey in the
land of Oz, while the use of extremely bright colours during the major part of the film is important
as it creates an atmosphere of surrealism, especially when contrasted with the black and white. Also,
the combinations of two genres – musical and drama – generate a dreamlike environment through
the use of juxtaposition and contrast, emphasizing the concept of the imaginative journey.
The third text, "Sky High", composed by 18 year old Hannah Robert in 1994, is another example of

GEO2313 – Theory, Space, Society 1 Candidate Number: 630012188 Using examples, critically evaluate the different roles that theoretical ideas can play in shaping research in human geography. In using Edward Said's theory of orientalism as a reference point for analysis, this essay will explore the different ways in which an academic theory can shape geographical research, with a particular focus on the fields of imaginative geographies and postcolonial geographies. This inquiry will focus on Said's (1978) seminal text "Orientalism: Western Conceptions of the Orient" and its influences on both academic and social worlds since the twentieth century. D. Gregory's interpretations and other studies of orientalism in contemporary culture will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Said claims that this practice of representation creates a hierarchical relationship between the 'Orient' and the 'Occident', with the 'West' establishing a cultural hegemony over the inferior 'East'. Subsequently, orientalism is viewed as an epistemological device for guaranteeing Western control over the 'Orient'. In "Orientalism" Said (1978) outlines the two crucial operations of orientalist practices : firstly, the 'Orient' was constructed as a wild space that had to be normalised and disciplined via a forceful 'Occident' who had to project their perception of order and control over the 'East' (Gregory et al. 2009:513). Secondly, the 'Orient' was presented as an exotic and bizarre region; a "living tableau of queerness" and in complete contrast to GEO2313 – Theory, Space, Society 2 Candidate Number: 630012188 the 'West' (Said, 1978:103). According to Said, the Orient is the "cultural contestant, and one of its deepest and most recurring images of the Other" (1978:1). This essentialist distinction allows the 'Orient' to be seen as a mystical space which is always presented as 'other' in contrast to the normalised 'West'. Orientalism can subsequently be seen as a system of cultural misrepresentation which is created to consolidate "European–Atlantic power over the Orient" (Said, 1978:6). • 3. It Ain ' T Me, Babe Is A Creative And Imaginative Broad... IT AIN'T ME, BABE is a creative and imaginative broad comedy. The concept is fun and a nice setup for comedy, conflict, and character change. The script is driven by the theme of second chances. There's definitely a lot to like about this script. On the other hand, there are also areas that would benefit from more development. First the script opens rather mildly. The idea that the music store is in jeopardy of being taken over or closed down certainly is workable, but a bit outdated, meaning this type of plot beat (being evicted etc.) has been used several times before. Given that there's a theme about "time" perhaps the story should begin in Dave's past showing the end of his career with his band. This could set up his inner conflict about missing out on a more "famous" life versus being "almost" famous. Then the structure can transition to the present day storyline of him working in the record shop. It would also be nice to set up Dave as a man that regrets some of his life decisions and wishes he could go back to the past and undo them. Right now, the scenes in the opening and with Jane simply are not the most engaging. The characters feel a bit immature and "old fashioned." On the other hand, the opening pages does foreshadow events with Amanda, Gary's desire to be a manager, and the city undergoing new development in which the past seems to be disappearing. There's a solid and fun inciting event when Dave finds the old antique listening booth. This is the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Higher English Imaginative Writing : The Young Gladiator Higher English Imaginative Writing The Young Gladiator Marcus anxiously awaited his turn to fight. The crowd was cheering and roaring as two slaves fought each other in the arena. Even though this was just a prelude to the main event the crowd was enthralled the action. He watched on nervously as they slashed and stabbed at each other. They weren 't inflicting serious damage on each other because they were both fast and wary of the other 's attacks. There were no major wounds inflicted yet but after a few minutes of dancing around each other one of them managed to just catch the other 's leg and they fell down into the sand. The soon to be champion stood above him, sword pointing at their neck. He looked up to the crowd; awaiting their verdict. At this point it was the Emperor and the crowd 's decision whether they survived or not. The crowd shouted to have him killed, pointing their thumbs down as the signal for death. With one quick stab, it was over. Some of the guards walked over to drag the dead body off as the champion walked around the arena basking in the crowd 's cheers. There were tens of thousands of people in the crowd excited for the upcoming fight. The Emperor was one of them. He was sitting in a much less crowded area; surrounded by his elite praetorian guard and his servants. He was wearing his most lavish toga and was drinking some fine Italian wine. The fights in the arena were a fortnightly event but it was rare for the Emperor to turn up to view one. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The goal of a sales presentation is to sell a solution to a customer, that solution being the product or service of the salesperson. A presentation must be relevant, make a connection with the product and the prospect, be to point, use showmanship, be animated, use physical demonstration, and belief in the product. In a team–selling environment, one person could give the presentation, one could answer questions, or however the team decides to set up the presentation. • 11. Imaginative Dreams Although everyone has great imaginative dreams, often they don't come true, which is quite disappointing. Throughout the novel Of Mice and Men, Lennie, George, Curley's Wife, and Candy all experienced disappointing dreams. All the characters had unfinished dreams of things that factored into the character they became. For example, if Curley's wife was a movie star, she wouldn't have been murdered by Lennie. With the unfinished dreams of ambition and aspiration in Of Mice and Men, dreams as a whole play an important role in the characters lives. Lennie and George's farm inspired Candy with the dream of joining them on their farm, even willing to put most of his money towards it. As Candy expresses in the novel, "they gave me two hundred and fifty dollars 'cause I los my hand. An I...I could cook and tend the chickens and hoe the garden some. How'd that be?" (59). To george this was a great opportunity, so quickly George took Candy up on this offer. This shows how Candy had a strong desire to join Lennie and George on their farm. A lot of the men on the farm aren't very wealthy, so Candy saying he would put three hundred and fifty dollars towards the farm. Although the farm was pleasant dream, it was never fulfilled. George, Lennie, and Candy all had faith that one day they would be men of their very own farm. Kenny is smart with school, he is smart with people, and he has insight into his parent's relationship. Kenny is so smart in school, the other kids called him "Poindexter". Henry tells his tale of being a more advanced reader in, "Teachers started treating me differently than other kids when I was in the first grade. At first I thought it was cool for them to think I was smart, but then I found out it made me enemies with the other kids. Back when I was in the second grade, Miss Henry used to take me to a different classroom to read stuff out of the Bible or the newspaper in front of the other kids." (Curtis 22). Kenny also is "people smart". He's perceptive, which means he's good at figuring out how other people are feeling by just watching them closely. For example, Kenny knows his mother repeats herself when she's mad, and he can always tell when Byron is about to get into trouble or pull a prank. He could tell that something is up when Byron is alone. "I was up in the bedroom looking at comic books when I heard Byron go into the bathroom and lock the door. I knew that something was up , since he only locked the door when he had something to hide." (Curtis 65). Kenny knew something was happening ( Nazi Parachutes Attack America and ... • 15. The Sociological Imagination Is Using Imaginative Thoughts... 1. Sociological imagination is using imaginative thoughts and processes to answer sociological questions. This is to think your way to a different perspective to achieve a better understanding of something. Sociology is the study of society, culture, and human nature. The goal is to understand what makes and changes societies. Manifest functions are consequences that are known, such as punishments for breaking laws. Latent functions are consequences that are not known, like a consequence that is positive or negative but not explicitly recognized. 2. Émile Durkheim's study of suicide revealed that humans are social creatures and that how a person interacts with others shapes how they act. I am taking this class for my minor because I believed it would be appropriate to minor in sociology while majoring in psychology. A "deeper" reason could be because I intend to work with people and while I am learning about the individual, I feel a need to learn about how society affects the individual as well. 3. The theory that has been influenced by Comte, Spencer, and Durkheim is 4. To Marx, capitalism is an economic system where the upper class exploits the lower, working class and conflict is inevitable. The alienation of the working class was caused by their labor. All they were to the upper class were just people who wanted to be fed that would work long hours and be separated from their families and each other to do so. In the movie, Maria emphasizes the quality of being sympathetic when Liesl, the eldest daughter of the Von Trapp family, cowardly meets with her friend Rolf Gruber without Captain Von Trapp's authorization. When Liesl returns home subsequent to her bedtime all drenched, Maria asks in her prayers to "understand [Liesl]," so that God will help her to "guide [Lisle's] footsteps." This demonstrates that Maria is understanding and considerate to the Von Trapp children who are mother–less, to have a pleasurable life of their own they can get happiness from their acquaintances. By allowing Liesl to escape from trouble when she sneaks out of the house, Maria shows the superiority of being understanding, as Liesl gains additional trust and dependence on Maria. Just as conspicuously, Maria is incredibly sympathetic, but she is also extremely imaginative. Maria has a vast imagination when she makes "play clothes" for the children from the curtains which hang in her room. This proves Maria is imaginative because knowing the Von Trapp children have sailor–suit uniforms of their own, she makes clothes that are not in the children's social class, to wear to their fun adventures for instance boating and tree climbing. Although the Captain does not give her fabric for the clothes, Maria's creative imagination develops ideas to make them. Captain explains that " [the children] have uniforms," but Maria's thoughts cannot stop her. This emphasizes that Maria is imaginative because she desires the children to have a marvelous time and forget about all the rules and regulations they follow under their father's ... • 19. Beyond Disciplinary Confinement And Imaginative... Osazuwa Osayomwanbor 200345160 Sociology/Social Studies Reading Summary (SOST 801) Topic: Beyond Disciplinary Confinement to Imaginative Transdisciplinarity. INTRODUCTION The society today is faced with various problems. Some have always been there, others are new to us, yet others have evolved from their older modes and taken new dimensions. For example we are not strangers to issues of democratization, but certainly are faced with the changing mode of war and terrorism. And then, new issues may include climate change. Whatever the category, man's eternal struggle is to be able to resolve the issues that confront or threaten its existence. To do this man depends on knowledge gained from studying the problems. However, as problems evolve, they seem to become resistant to existing approaches, or at least, we seem not to be able to resolve them using existing approaches. Thus those problems become wicked problems. In this chapter, we discuss how such problems can be resolved using transdisciplinary approach. WHY TRANSDICIPLINARITY? The relevance of the transdisciplinarity approach is seen in the nature of the problem. Since problems are now multidimensional, then we agree that a single approach will not sufficiently resolve it (Brown 2010:16). Hence we need a transdiciplinary approach. In chapter two of Brown (2010:16), there are some other reasons why we need a transdiciplinary approach to wicked problems. They are: 1. Existing scientific approaches are to specialized or ... The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne Essay A world in which old men can be degraded and abused, a world in which people wearing dirty, unwashed, striped uniforms are not seen as being oppressed, a world in which a starving boy of identical age yet vastly different physique is seen as simply being unfortunate – such a world cannot exist. Or can it? In the world of Bruno, this is precisely the way the world is. John Boyne's book "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" invites the readers to embark on an imaginative journey at two levels. At the first level, Boyne himself embarks upon an imaginative journey that explores a possible scenario in relation to Auschwitz. Bruno is a 9 year old boy growing up in a loving, but typically authoritarian German family in the 1930?s. His father is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the end of the book Boyne shows the personal disintegration that can occur when a person is forced to confront this disconnect ? in the case of the book, with the realisation by Bruno's father that his son has actually gone into the camp and has suffered the same fate as Schmuel and his people. Boyne also undergoes an imaginative journey in this book as his past childhood imagination inspired him to create a novel that explores the necessity of imaginative journeys. It is interesting to note that this story is totally remote from Boyne?s own experience. Research on Boyne indicates that he was brought up in a stable family where his father worked in the insurance industry and his mother was a home–maker. There is nothing to indicate that any part of his personal background could have contributed to the terrible realism portrayed in this work. One clue as to the source of his imaginative journey may be found in the fact that, as a child, he was an avid reader who loved fiction such as Enid Blyton and the Narnia series. The closest we get to fully understanding Boyne?s imaginative journey comes from an interview with Bookreporter.com where he states: "As an Irishman growing up in the 1970s and 1980s, I was only too aware of the divides ––– the fences ––– that existed in my own country, and that caused violence and killing for families throughout Northern Ireland for too many years. Different Definitions Of Being Creative Option B Many people have activities that are significant to them that certain activity can be described as being a special part of them, for me it would be being creative. The definition of being creative in the dictionary is relating to or involving the imagination or original ideas, especially in the production of artistic work. Though, there are many different definitions of being creative in the world. What I will show the reader is what being creative means to me and why it's significant. Now there are reasons for why this is significant to me, one gets to be imaginative, artistic, and they get to travel, but there is more to it than that. First, in being creative for me splits into different things I get to do while being creative and that the first thing would be being imaginative. Imaginative means to have a big imagination thus thinking of new ideas or things and thinking of possibilities in my mind that don't seem real. Seeing images of what I want to do then converting them to dreams or goals I have. Ever since I can remember I have been imaginative also thinking always picturing it's been carved into my brain and memory. The first time I started to figure out that I wanted to always be creative was when my mom announced we would be going to Florida. The piece is intended to show the reader that our landscape does shape who we are but what we make of our experience is what ultimately builds our identity. Life is going to have it ups and downs. I will compare her story to her cousins, whose father being the older brother of the dad grew up the same way. His story is however different, he perceives the disconnectedness as a threat, whereas the girl perceives is a thing that just happens. Even though living with a similar father figure, the ways that two grow up is different. She is more optimistic and laidback while the cousin becomes more timid and afraid of other people. The way she writes about is quite incoherent, writing anything that pops into her head, symbolising the disconnectedness she has with her father. • 31. What A Work Of Art Is And How It Comes Into Being Collingwood begins his discussion by exploring what a work of art is and how it comes into being. He states that others have come to the conclusion that art is not produced by accident, but that it is produced by some controlling force that resides in the unconscious of the artist (Collingwood). Collingwood summarizes some of the theories that exist on how art comes into being but concludes that theorizing is not best approach to answering the questions about art (Collingwood). He believes that theorists over look simple answers and jump to more complicated theories than are necessary (Collingwood). Collingwood states that the activity that voluntarily produces is called creation (Collingwood). Theologians often use the word creation to describe God's making of the world and therefore some may see a problem with using the world for art (Collingwood). However, the word create is also used daily to talk about items that have nothing to do with God (Collingwood). According to Collingwood, creating something refers to making that is non–technical, happens voluntarily, does not require an end, has a plan, and does not transform raw material (Collingwood). Therefore, the making of art is referred to as creating. Collingwood makes some important distinctions in order to clarify his argument. First, he clarifies the distinction between creation that is related to God and creation that is related to art (Collingwood). He asserts that creation from God is creation in which no ... • 33. Purly Imaginative Subject by Gary J. Kornblith An essay written by Gary J. Kornblith, the main focus is on a purely imaginative subject. The use of this counterfactual approach is widely accepted as a methodology in research of causation. According to Kornblith, counterfactual exercises are necessary to "think more clearly about causation and to distinguish between essential factors and coincidental developments"(79). He uses the counterfactual method to present the idea that if Henry Clay had been elected in 1844, which he goes on to prove as plausible, we would be in a much different country. The thesis as a whole is stated as "... My focus is on a different pair of wars: the Mexican–American War of 1846–1848 and the American Civil War of 1861–1865... Rather than project a different military outcome, I posit the absence of the Mexican–American War...The key to peace in my counterfactual scenario is a victory by Henry Clay over James K. Polk in the very close presidential election of 1844... As a result Texas would almost certainly have remained an independent republic in 1845, and the United States would not have gone to war with Mexico the following year. Based as it is on a highly plausible turn of events, this counterfactual scenario promises to advance our understanding of the causes of the Civil War"(77). He then adds the fact that there are two viewpoints that come from this counterfactual exercise; Revisionists, who believe that the Civil War could have been avoided, despite the sectional differences, and ... Nayiri Khatchadourian HNRS 63W Prof. Bruce Stone 6 June 2017 The Consequence of Reading Fiction In his essay "Formative Fictions: Imaginative Literature and the Training of the Capacities", Joshua Landy, professor at Stanford University, aims to explain the function of fiction and the reward of our engagement with literary works. Landy highlights three theories of the function of fiction: the exemplary branch, which invites the reader to consider characters as models for emulation or avoidance, the affective branch, which focuses on what fiction does to our emotions, and the cognitive branch, that believes that fictions grants us access to knowledge. Landy is specifically interested in "formative fiction", works "whose function it is to fine–tune our mental capacities" (Landy 183). The purpose is not to acquire a superior understanding of the story, but to practice methods that allow readers to take an active stance towards works, whether it be picking holes in the logic or mending those holes. Rather than describing what happens to readers, he emphasizes that readers ought to do something with formative fictions that admittedly, they can easily fail to do. Landy argues that readers who look for a moral or message of a novel have misinterpreted the purpose of literature, which is not to have a genuine connection to the reader's lives. While accepting that his theory is not universal and only applies to some literary works, Landy's new option for interpreting texts, his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Murders In The Rue Morgue "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," written by Edgar Allan Poe in 1841 is considered to be the first true detective story ever written, and the influence for works such as Sherlock Holmes. The narrator and his friend C. Auguste Dupin, after finding out about an intriguing murder, find themselves trying to free an innocent man and find the real beast behind the murders in the rue morgue. Through Poe's use of symbolism and vivid imagery, the theme of the story is revealed as the struggle between the analytical, emotional, and imaginative. These items that are strewn across the house are red herrings. The reader thinks that they are important to finding out who committed the murder when in reality they are not. This conflicts us as readers, because what we are analyzing and what is in front of us is irrelevant, and we are forced to rely on our imagination – or in this case, Dupins'. Another example is the gruesome description of the murder victims, "...lay the corpse of the old lady, with her throat so entirely cut that, upon an attempt to raise her, the head fell off. The body, as well as the head, was fearfully mutilated..." This raw imagery gives the readers mixed emotions, all while they try to analyze the evidence. They are faced with the same problem that plagued the Prefect of Police: they only look at the obvious evidence, overlooking any other possibilities. An opposite practice of todays societal norms of reaching to be the same as majority groups. When thinking about childhood experiences, camp stands out in my mind as a place where I have received the best advice as well as an eye opener to someone else's life journeys. Reminding me that everyone has their own struggles in society and it is okay to have your own interest. Multiple theorists have researched feminist thought and the importance of educating school age children about equality and the freedom to choose. Oftentimes, education has failed to cover feminist thought leaving the youths' perspective on minority groups to be judgemental and usually causing bullying to take place in the school environment. An alternative project to improve society is to teach children about intersectionality through a mandatory Feminist Camp for school age children. Students are bullied when they fit outside of societal norms by gender binaries, sex shaming, racism as well as those who are minority or oppressed. Project The Feminist Camp would incorporate major teachings of feminist theories in order to educate youth as well as create a space for adults to teach their own experiences challenging ... The Wind in the Willows Essay The Wind in the Willows The Wind in the Willows (published in 1908) by Kenneth Grahame is a children's fictional novel set in England during the early 20th century. This allegory from the stimulus booklet evokes feelings of magic and adventure but also feelings of reflection as we relate the actions of Ratty, Mole and Toad to our lives.Grahame evokes an imaginative journey within the mind of the reader as he questions "Which journey's do we take that we really want to experience?" Kenneth Grahame conveys this idea through Mole who is being forced to take Ratty's journey instead of his own. This text broadens our understanding of the world today in that it helps us to undertsand the complex interactions between people. The major ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Camps, villages, town's cities". This vivid description of what he anticipates creates imagery in the minds of the audience allowing them to enter the imaginative realm of Toads journey. In this extract Kenneth Grahame creates exaggeration within the characters to effectively fuel the imagination of the audience. The audience is sent on an imaginative journey as they picture the different facial expressions, changing body language and personalities of the characters. For example "The rat only snorted and thrust his hands deep into his pocket", "cried the Toad, straddling and expanding himself", "said Toad imploringly", "followed him eagerly" etc. The reader can interprete the nature and personality of the characters more precisely through exaggeration because they are able to picture them in their imagination. The use of exaggeration is effective as it allows the true nature of the character to be expressed in the writing, for example "said Toad imploringly" illustrates how Toad is desperate and pleaing to Ratty, however if the text only contained "said Toad" then the true nature of Toad would not be evoked in the audiences imagination. 'The Wind in the Willows' uses the technique of anthropomorphism. This feature is visually appealing to the audience as the animals seem less threatening and it sends the reader into a fantasy world full of magical and adventurous thoughts. The audience can effectively engage with the human traits shown by the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 57. Children and Their Imgainary Play Introduction Children show their highest level of intelligence through their play. It opens new possibilities in thinking and develops emotional intelligence making their feelings manageable. Play also helps build a sense of self and relationships with others. One type of play that has an important role on a child's development is imaginative play. In this essay I will focus on what imaginative play is, the types of imaginary play, skills and attributes imaginary play develops and the roles practitioners play in helping a child develop their imaginative flow. Children and Their Imaginary Play Play is the basic activity of early years childhood. Children are able to absorb and display and understanding of the world around them while simultaneously expressing their personality, sense of self, intellect, social capacity and physicality. Fromberg and Bergen (2007) describes Paget's four stages of play that get more complex as the child develops. The stages being, imaginative play, constructive plays, functional play and 'games with rules'. Consequently, it can be argued that imaginative play, being the first stage, builds on skills learned through imaginative play, preparing children for circumstances involving rules. Briggs and Hanse (2012) explain Bodrova disagreement that rules are top priority in imaginary play. The rules therefore are determined by the imaginary roles the children take on. Imaginary play is incorporated into other forms of play and involves a more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The song "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds", performed by The Beatles, written in the year 1967, by John Lennon, takes the listener on a journey into the imagination. The most common interpretation of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" is that the lyrics of the song follow the journey that one would embark on after taking the drug LSD which would project wild imaginings. Other interpretations of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" are that Lennon had a girlfriend named Lucy and that the song is primarily about her.. In "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds", there is a lot of imagery; these following examples make it very easy to project the pictures of the song into the mind. Imagery is shown by lines such as "cellophane flowers of yellow and green" and "marmalade skies" these lines give the listener a sense of being there, and being able to see what the composer has portrayed in the song. The second person technique combined with the technique of imagery, created by alliteration, "tangerine trees" and "plasticine porters" which helps the description stand out, and adjectives such as "newspaper taxis". There are some techniques that are harder to find, and be easily looked–over. This is shown in the starting line of each verse is innocent and would maybe appeal to a child's mind. For example the "newspaper taxis" appearing on the shore could refer to paper boats appearing on the shore. This text explores the journey as means of searching for something as throughout the song, the listener is told to "look for the girl with the sun in her eyes" who appears difficult to find. Not until the end of the song and, the end of the journey, the "girl with kaleidoscope eyes" is found. It seems that she was the purpose of the journey into the imaginative world. • 61. Pan's Labyrinth Comparison In my opinion, the story with the imaginative overlay is the better story. The reason for this is because the 'real' story made Ofelia look like a helpless, pitiful girl who could not control the situation around her, whereas in the 'imaginative story', Ofelia is portrayed as anything but! In the 'imaginative story', Ofelia was able to contribute to her situation even if most of it ended up not helping her condition at all – she was powerful and resourceful. Even though all her efforts ultimately went to waste, I really admire the kind of message Ofelia's character spreads: despite her poorly condition she was able to take action by herself and did not rely on others. She was not a damsel in distress but her own kind of hero. Another thing that cannot be overlooked is that without the 'imaginative' overly, the story of Pan's Labyrinth would have been nothing but a dull tragedy. The real story is stained with tragedy so with this imaginative overlay, the viewer can enjoy this movie without being overcome with sorrow for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Finally, another way of looking at this is through what knowledge we have of Ofelia. From what we know, Ofelia is an avid reader and mostly she reads fairytales with beautiful princesses and perfect endings. It is obvious that she would dream to have a similar story be her life. So this 'imaginative story' can be seen as Ofelia's attempt to recreate her fairytales so that her life resembles them but in a more adventurous way. Her imaginative story is a way through which she in eventually able to meet her father, her life seems like it has a happy ending and the overlay makes her seem like a strong princess fighting for her people and kingdom rather than a pitiful victim of trauma and misery stuck in situations that they cannot ... Mental Process Paper Mental Process Paper The mental process is the performance of some composite cognitive activity; an operation that affects mental contents; "the process of thinking", the cognitive operation of remembering (Farlex, 2008). The mental mindset includes four styles of creative intelligence: Intuitive, Innovative, Imaginative and Inspirational. This paper will compare and contrast the four styles of creative intelligence and their influences on organizational decision making, include examples of how mental models/mind sets might limit the decision making process and explain how these models influence my decision making in the workplace. Imaginative Imaginative can be defined as artistic, dreamy, and poetic (WikiHow, 2008). Anyone being imaginative can enjoy life at all events. Innovation involves developing the imaginative mindset. It involves clearing the mind of preconceptions, value judgments and expectations (Halls, 2006). In order for an employee to be imaginative, he or she must be inquisitive, ask questions and learn something new ever minute. It is good to be a good listener as well putting themselves in different situations narrated by different people. Being imaginative can increase the ability to fulfill any goal or desires by using affirmation techniques. There are no boundaries to imagination, only a limit to the amount of experiences that feed it. In order to be imaginative, people have to position themselves to be imaginative. Be daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play–it–safers, the creatures of the commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary (Beaton, 2008). Imaginative Play sychChildren's Imaginative Play: A Descriptive Psychology Approach Charles Kantor, Ph.D. Abstract The significance of children's imaginative play is presented from the perspective of Descriptive Psychology and in particular Ossorio's Dramaturgical model of persons. The fluidity of imaginative play, the imitation of and creation of social practices and options within play as well as the opportunity to switch roles and act according to reasons of another, contribute to the development of judgment. The observer–critic role emerges during imaginative play as children produce, direct, and enact their dramas. The self and self concept The psychoanalytic theorists (Freud, Erikson) see children playing out negative emotions in a safe context. Children are attempting to regain control in situations of conflict. Erikson (1963, p.240) in describing a young client struggling with the wartime death of his father, a pilot, illustrates the healing value of play: "...he was observed swooping down a hill on a bicycle, endangering, scaring, yet deftly avoiding other children.... In watching him, and hearing the strange noises he made, I could not help thinking that he again imagined himself to be an airplane on a bombing mission. But at the same time he gained in playful mastery over his locomotion; he exercised circumspection in his attack, and he became an admired virtuoso on a bicycle." 259 Advances in Descriptive Psychology–Vol. 9 This description of a young boy playing imaginatively illustrates elements that theorists over the years have attributed to the value of play. His role play was distinctly social as others witnessed his attack, and his actions increased his stature, his prestige among his friends. His ability to handle the bike, his cognitive strength, "circumspection in his attack", as he swoops down the hill, is noted as well. His self esteem increased to the extent that he ... The Romantic period, a time that writers such as Wordsworth and Shelley focused their writing in the centre of life and social importance. An important aspect of 'Romanticism: its emphasis upon the power and terrors of the inner imaginative life ' (Watson, 2012, p. 1). The Prelude celebrates Wordsworth 's life retained through memories and with the act of remembering, depicting emotions and experiences. Whereas, Shelley and the 'Ode to the West Wind ' engaged his audience with inner and outer lives situations, ideas and elements of nature that represent his own position and ideas. This essay will compare and contrast Wordsworth recollections and Shelley dramatizations of the 'powers and terrors of the inner imaginative life '. Also considering, rhyme scheme, stanza forms, the reasons for the use of assonance and alliteration, and other poetic techniques. Finally, how do these effects relate to the main question. When given consideration to the poems, the descriptions demonstrated a deeper power of inner imaginative life. The power as stated 'comes from the heart or the soul, but also somehow from outside ' (The Open University, 2012, Romantic authorship, transcript p. 1). In comparison, both poets combine natural landscape with sublime vision of poetic power, that creates debates to what is real and or subjective. Intermodal Containers Moving Freight The advancement in technology and imaginative techniques, the procedures and systems of how cargo is moved and handled is streamlined. Prior to containerization, moving freight from one location to another across the globe was a tedious practice and often took an extended amount of time. Manufacturers would use various configurations with dissimilar sizes and weights which led to additional time at each location being required to handle the different sized cargo. The use of intermodal containers has changed the shipping industry allowing for multiple modes of transportation to rapidly cross load the containers and mover the containers to the next destination. Implementing the use intermodal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There were significant delays in cross loading cargo onto the ship, workers would have to stack like packages, construct shipping pallets, and block and brace items in the hulls of the ships as well as the decks. When a piece of cargo was too large or heavy it would require additional material handling equipment to move the freight to the next transportation mode being either rail or road. At the receiving port there was also a time delay due to the need to offload the cargo by individual piece and separate in on the dock. Road and rail transportation were very effective, but encountered similar delays and issues depending on the size and weight of the cargo. This resulted in a call for change in the way freight is transported among all modes of transport. The Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration identified the need to implement change which is topic in the Intermodal Surface Transportation Act of 1991 (ISTEA). • 71. Subtext In Amy Bloom's Imaginative Writing The concept of subtext is the unspoken dialogue that lies underneath the story. The subtext usually expresses feelings like sexual tension, anger, hurt, sadness, and more without directly saying those words. With subtext, the readers get to experience the character's unspoken thoughts and sometimes help understand why characters do what they do. In Imaginative Writing, Janet Burroway comments on the importance of subtext in page 270 by stating that, "Subtext is a necessary result and cost of civilization –If everyone went around saying what they meant all the time, there would be fewer friends and a lot more pain–but it offers a glorious opportunity for art". People don't always say what they mean and although that can make things unclear, it is for the best. If everyone went around saying what they felt or thought, all the time problems would arise. Amy Bloom's, "The Story" is a great example of how important subtext can add to the plot. The protagonist, Janet, throughout the whole story has almost two completely different personas. However, the other characters do not know this. The other characters only see what the protagonist, wants them to see. This story is full of subtext with the main character seeming innocent and trustworthy to others. Throughout the book Janet's actions seem noble she befriends Sandra who confides her secrets to her. Despite Sandra being an awful mother, a cheater, and a person who takes advantage of her patients her demise is in part of Janet. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Imaginative Thinking : The Real World And True Living Imaginative Thinking: How it Leads to Authentic and Effective Living Oprah Winfrey stated that "to be present is to be fully alive. And there is no true life without presence." While this can be arguably true, it can also be proven wrong. There are different perspectives on what is considered to be the real world and "true living". One must ask, what does it mean to be living in the present? Does it mean to be fully engaged in the current moment or doing what brings happiness? There are different opinions on this idea, one being that it is harmful for one not to live in the present and another being that the use of counterfactual thinking can benefit one's life. In "Alone Together," Sherry Turkle discusses how using technology to escape reality is detrimental to the authenticity of relationships. She stated that in order to have a genuine relationship, there should be more interaction within the real world. In the same manner, Janet Flammang in " The Taste for Civilization: Food, Politics, and Civil Society," explains how the avoidance of face–to–face communication can cause a lack of connection with the real world. However, in "Possible Worlds: Why Do Children Pretend?"Alison Gopnik argues that while referring back to counterfactuals can be harmful, it can also be helpful. Counterfactuals allow us to live in the past rather than fully living in the present. Focusing on the past can be beneficial to the present because past experiences can help aid upcoming endeavors. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. How Does Jean Jacques Rousseau Influence On Childhood Jean–Jacques Rousseau was a philosopher in the 18th century who studied the way children interact with each other in a playful setting. His theories concerning childhood development have impacted many progressive educational theories still in use today. However, his work is not supported by the popular childhood theories of the present age; for example, Rousseau speaks out against imaginative play in his work Emile, which is currently considered to be a historical milestone in early and middle childhood research. Rousseau believed that imaginative play would set children on the road to unhappiness and dissatisfaction throughout life. Though Rousseau's ideas may be factually inaccurate, his views that are presented in Emile still impacts childhood ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many childhood theorists have delineated the importance of childhood imaginative play as it encourages children to differentiate between the "world in their heads" and the "world outside" (Shuffelton, 2012, p. 314). Child theorist Amy Shuffelton (2012) commented on the importance of imaginative play by stating: Also, children use imaginative play as a means to gain the emotional competence to handle the various hurdles life places in their paths. In happier situations, children play out interpersonal conflicts and thereby become able to resolve the real ones; in horrific situations, children have used imaginative play as a means to cope with the terrors around them. (p. 314) Imaginative play encourages children to think outside of the box and broadens their understanding of the world around them. Current research suggests that children who consistently use their imaginations and can differentiate between real and make–believe actually end up with higher achievements later in life (Shuffelton, 2012). Imaginative play can have a long lasting effect on the way a child develops and should be taken into account by both parents and educators. Rousseau's theory in today's ... • 77. Imaginative Journeys An imaginative journey can be defined as an extension of reality that transcends physical barriers. Through the use of abstract notions and an element of surrealism, an imaginative journey can result in distortion of the boundaries between imagination and reality. This type of journey involves readers by drawing on their imagination and can therefore result in the transformation of perceptions and attitudes, which may also stimulate a sense of enlightenment for both the characters and the responder. These characteristics are evident in the three texts I have studied, "The Tempest" by William Shakespeare, Victor Fleming's, "The Wizard of Oz" and "Sky High" by Hannah Robert. In "The Tempest", William Shakespeare leads the reader into an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Initially, Dorothy longs for a place where she can be freed from the all the struggles of her current life, and the world that she and her companions are taken into, is a world which will aid each and every one of them in a journey of self–discovery and awakening. For each of the characters, their radical transformations are stimulated through the hindrances and limitations faced by the characters within the imaginative journey. The use of colour is important in "The Wizard of Oz" as it helps to distinguish realism from idealism. The real events occurring in Kansas (Dorothy's home town) are portrayed in chromatic colours and provide meaning and emphasis on the imaginative journey in the land of Oz, while the use of extremely bright colours during the major part of the film is important as it creates an atmosphere of surrealism, especially when contrasted with the black and white. Also, the combinations of two genres – musical and drama – generate a dreamlike environment through the use of juxtaposition and contrast, emphasizing the concept of the imaginative journey. The third text, "Sky High", composed by 18 year old Hannah Robert in 1994, is another example of an imaginative journey. Although written in prose, this text can also be viewed as a reflective narrative in the form of a poem due to the way in which the narrator thinks back to her childhood memories.
