An Interview to the Barangay Captain or other officer
1. Kindly give us a brief historical background of your barangay. Who are the current
officials?
Barangay Kamagayan was founded last 1921 and was named after Magay, a tree
which is very popular on their area long time ago.
The current officials are:
Barangay Captain
Hon. Raquel Avila
Councilors
Rene "Roy" Avila - Peace, order and sports development
Mansueto "Tito" Avila - Socialiazed housing and laws
Diogenes “Jerome” Avila - Finance and Livelihood Program
Norberto “Doydoy” Diaz – Public Service
Rico Ramirez – Health, Sanitation, Education & Social Service
2. Describe the community in terms of location, adjacent/neighboring barangays.
Barangay Kamagayan is located in the heart of the city. The neighboring
barangays are barangay Day-as in the north, barangay Kalubihan in the south,
barangay San Antonio in the east and barangay Parian in the west.
3. What are some issues, concerns, problems, confronting this community?
The barangay was branded as "red light" barangay because of the issue on
prostitution. According to Captain Avila, the women/ prostitutes were not really
from the area but from the diffrent provinces that just came in the city. But
because of the law against human trafficking, this problem was lessening
already. Now, the barangay is facing another problem which is the demolition of
some areas.
2. 4. How are you addressing these challenges?
According to Capt. Avila, this problem is not really a big problem because it has
already a solution. Once the houses are demolished, the area will be equally
subdivided and will be given to each family.
5. What resources (human and natural) this barangay can rely on?
The barangay relies on human resources like city government, NGO's, DSWD,
and Alliance. Also, they are adapted by the University of the Visayas. They are
supported financially by each department of the school.
6. What are some of your projects to build this barangay?
One of the projects in the barangay is the Nipa hut located along the streets of
the barangay. They are given to mothers for free so that they can start building
their own business.
7. How can we students in CNU help you and the constituents of this barangay?
Students can help in every way they can but according to Captain Avila, they
prioritize on their children, so she asked that it will be a great help if we focus on
helping their children because she believes that its easy to mold a child than to
teach an adult.
8. What community assisstance / support you can extend to school?
They have a daycare center at the second floor of the barangay hall, but
umfortunately the facilities are very lacking.
Community Visit Report
Analysis
Suggest ways where the school can use the resources of the community more
creatively.
1. Determine which community resources would be most beneficial to the
students and teachers and which resources are also accessible such as museum, places
to be stay in like boarding houses, dorms and apartment for those who are living from
afar.
2. Organize the community resources for easiest access by the school community
like museum, hospitals, police office or barangay tanod and historical society.
3. Publicize and promote the community resources to ensure full use by those
who would benefit most such job opportunities during summer for students.
3. In what ways can the school address the issues/ concerns/ problems of the community?
By extending the hand of those who are in need, in Barangay Camagayan, there
is no so much problem but their Day Care Center is in need of volunteers to extend
such help of the little children who went to school. School especially the educators can
give time to the pupils by teaching, communicating and feeding also.
How can the school and community concretely and positively work together for
community development?
They must have communication and plan in making steps for the progress in the
community like making small scale business that will benefit both school and
community.
Initiate a program for the out-of-school youth that would give them opportunity
to learn and to generate income in a way it will help the community
development.
Reflections
How did you feel while you were undertaking the community visit? What new learning
did you get from the visit?
I felt frightened to visit the place since it was so crowded but late I realized
that the community is not supposed to be afraid of, instead I have to think of
ways on how to uplift the environment in physical, moral, social and spiritual
aspects.
As a future teacher, what would you do to establish a cordial relationship with the
community?
In the practice of my noble profession, I will be a good model to my
community and by participating community activities to establish cordial
relationship with the community.
How will you win the community to support the school programs and projects?
I would share my opinions and suggestions to the community leaders with
clear understanding of my purpose. I will establish activities and programs
that will meet the need of my students thus the community will support such
as Community Reading Center.
