Research Task

2. Chosen Blog
I have decided to look at Katie’s work from last year (2014) as her
music video had a major narrative base which is what I was thinking of
doing when it came to filming my music video. I will be looking at how
her work has been successful through the research and planning
process in order to create a good music video.

3. Research Process
When looking at the research tasks, I can see that the first couple of
tasks that she carried out were the History of Music Videos and the
research into existing music videos that she could use for inspiration for
her music video. In comparison, when I initially started posting on my
blog, I also decided to concentrate on the research tasks rather than
the planning tasks in order to help me contemplate various ideas that
could work for my video.
There are a number of tasks that are set in which we have to carry out
which will help us reach the highest number of marks for our blog. It is
quite helpful being able to look at previous students’ work to see the
standard in which I must reach to get a good grade.

4. Planning Process
When looking at the planning tasks, I can see that one of the first tasks
that was complete was the initial planning ideas and inspirations from
current music videos which are readily available on the music market. I
believe that when I start the planning process, this would be a good
point to start with as I will be able to gather various ideas and pointers
to help me create my music video.
When looking at Katie’s blog, there are 30 planning posts compared to
15 research which suggests to me even though there is research
needed in order to create something like this, the planning posts are
extremely important in order to create something remotely successful.

5. The Music Video
The song used for the music video is Medicine by Daughter and is 4
minutes and 12 seconds long. Overall I believe that the narrative style
of the video is quite simple, however I believe that this is very effective
and draws in the attention of the audience. With certain elements of
the video being in black and white, but also an almost sepia effect
signifies sadness and helps tell the story of the song and the video
which I believe is key when producing a narrative based video.
The costumes and props used are quite basic with just normal outfits
used on the characters and with a basic setting of a house will allow
the audience to relate to the ‘normality’ within, which can sometimes
be quite difficult with music videos due to the extravagant costumes
and large, high end locations.

6. Digipak
What I like most about the digipak is where a small amount of colour
has been added in terms of the black and white photo with the green
glass bottle. A glass bottle is easily relatable to the narrative of the
video – the girl has an alcohol problem – and it is a prop that is
frequently seen within the music video. On the back page of the
digipak, I like that the songs on that album are not just listed down the
left hand side of the cover as this is something that could be seen as
being quite generic.
When completing my digipak, one thing that I must remember to
include within my design is the spine of the digipak, even through it is
something quite small, it is an important part as it will hold the digipak
together.

7. Magazine Advert
In terms of the magazine advert, I believe that the most effective part
of it is the picture that has been used. There seems to be a running
theme of the green bottle through all of the products which I believe
adds to the effect as it highlights that all products have been thought
about and links them all together, tying back to the narrative of the
video.
However, in my personal opinion, I am not a big fan of the typography
that has been used and I also believe that the star ratings on the page
are a little bit too big, and in some ways distract your attention away
from other information that I believe could be seen as more important.

8. Overview
Overall, I believe that looking at this blog and music video has helped
me gather a good idea as to the standard and quality of what my
work needs to be like. In comparison to other students’ videos such as
‘Spectrum’ and ‘Bad ‘Blood,’ this video is not as extravagant, however,
I believe that it is just as effective with the telling of the story. It also
allows the audience to relate to the video with their being a story
which can be seen in society quite frequently.
