Alternative rock (also called alternative music, alt rock or simply alternative) is a
genre of rock music that emerged from the independent music underground
of the 1980s and became widely popular by the 1990s. The 'alternative'
definition refers to the genre's distinction from mainstream rock music,
expressed primarily in a distorted guitar sound, transgressive lyrics and
generally a nonchalant, defiant attitude.
4. coldplay
Chris Martin is an English singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, and is the lead vocalist,
pianist, rhythm guitarist, and one of the founders of the band Coldplay.
While studying at University College London, Martin met Jonny Buckland with whom he decided
to form a band - Martin on lead vocals and Buckland as lead guitarist. They were joined
by Guy Berryman as their bass player and Will Champion, who learnt how to play drums in
order to serve as the drummer for the band. In 1996, they formed the rock band Coldplay,
originally known as Pectoralz, later changed to Starfish temporarily until finally they were
offered the name Coldplay by another band who did not want it anymore.
One of the earliest songs played by the band that exists today is known as Ode to Deodorant.
The song was written as a joke between university friends and was also put on the demo of
the band along with the song Brothers & Sisters. Coldplay then proceeded to sign a deal
with a record company and released their first EP Safety, which over performed the
expectations of the record company and the band.
Since the release of their first album Parachutes in 2000 the band has had internationally
recognized fame and success. To date, they have released six studio albums in total along
with several EP's, including A Rush of Blood to the Head, Coldplay Live 2003, X&Y, Viva la
Vida or Death and All His Friends, Prospekt's March, LeftRightLeftRightLeft, Mylo Xyloto,
Coldplay Live 2012 and Ghost Stories.
