2. Initial Ideas
I did a questionnaire on initial ideas of rock music videos. I knew when taking
upon the project that I wanted to make a rock music video but wanted to find
out peoples opinion on what constitutes a rock music video. This helped me to
get an understanding of how I was going to go about filming this music video.
This survey asked questions about narrative as well as rock conventions so I
could base my video from the research I have collected. This helped me to shape
my music video during the planning stage.
This research was important to the planning process so I could explain my
research and show how I have learnt from the questionnaire and taken my
primary audience into consideration when creating the music video. I have
learnt from my questionnaire on initial ideas that rock videos most important
feature are narrative stories because they create mood and atmosphere for the
music video.
3. Music video Rough Cuts
As you can see from my rough cuts video shown below there are shots that I
didn’t think were acceptable for my music video so I cut them out from the
video. Originally, all of the band shots were in the music video. When I sat
down with the members of the band, they had some issues with the band
shots. They said agreed that the drummer was smiling in some of the shots
which contradicted the theme of the music video which was depression. We
agreed that this couldn't be in the music video so we had to go back to the
studio to rerecord some of the footage as we couldn’t use it as it would have
contradicted the theme of the music video I was trying to create. Without
getting feedback on the shots, I could have missed this issue and the audience
could have been given mixed messages in the band shots.
4. Digipak Rough Cuts
The rough cuts from my digipak started from an array of pictures. I had a lot of shots that I
could have used for my digipak but I had to decide which pictures I wanted to use on my
digipak. I had already established the template that I was going to use for my digipak, all that
was left was to decide which pictures I was going to put on the six slides. I went through a
bunch of images that I felt that were suitable to the digipak. The first page of the digipak had to
be in one consistent colour as I wanted to put the band name and the song name over the
picture. This narrowed it down to one photo to use as my opening page.
The second digipak slide was also mostly in one colour so I could put the song names over the
slide to introduce all the songs that would be on that album. This was effective because it
makes the digipak look more realistic. Originally the third slide was just a collage of pictures as
a mood board. However, I decided to use this moldboard as an actual slide as I felt that it
showed the band in different scenarios and showed action.
After trialing a few different design ideas, I narrowed down the six panels that I was going to
include. All that was left was to finish off the last slide with the barcode, production logos and
links to my marketing so that my digipak would look more realistic and effective. Once these
were all finished, I put all the panels on the template to make it look more realistic as they
were on the template I had decided was best for my 6-panel digipak.
I asked my friends and family on feedback about my digipak to see if there were any
improvements that needed to be made. The feedback I got was that one of the pictures that I
included was far too stretched which made the picture look distorted and unprofessional. From
this feedback, I changed the forth slide picture to a picture of higher quality. I found this
feedback very useful as it helped me to identify an issue with my digipak which would have
effected its professionality. After making this change I decided that my digipak now didn’t have
any other improvements that needed to be made as myself and the audience were happy with
the improvement that I made. The other really important feedback I received from my teacher
was that I needed to put the slides over the template. Originally I had the slides posted on a
SlideShare. My teacher thought that my digipak would look more professional if I was to put it
over the template I had chosen. This was very important feedback as it helped me to think
about the professionality of the digipak and helped me to understand that my digipak will look
more professional if I was to put it over the template.
5. Website
The aspect of the coursework was the website. The website
was where I put pictures of the band as well as band songs. I
also posted updates on the website about the progress of the
music video.
This was very useful to me because it allowed me to give
more insight into the band so the audience would be
interested in the band and will want to keep following our
progress. Having all this information in one place was very
beneficial because it meant that my blog was very accessible
and the audience could access all the information they
needed from one place.
There was a contact section in my website where anyone
could leave feedback regarding my website to I can make
some improvements to make it better suit the audience. My
teacher as well as some of my peers found that the website
focused too heavily on the band rather than the video. They
felt that to improve the website I needed to include less
about the band and focus more on the music video.
I agreed with this feedback and after reflecting on my
website, found some changes that I wanted to make to my
website to make the music video the main feature of the
website. To adjust the feedback, I took away a lot of the
pictures and posted more news updates on the blog to give
the emphasis on the music video. This was important
because the website should market the video and keep all
the information in this one place so the audience can keep up
to date on all the news. These changes were vital to make my
website look more professional because I found out after
reflecting my performance that the band was too heavily
focused on on my website. The feedback not only helped me
to make changes, but to also help me evaluate my own
performance and to realize the error I hade made so I could
learn from it. This made it easier for me to evaluate my own
performance so I could find out where my strengths and
weaknesses are.
6. All three aspects
After receiving all of my feedback I was happy with the three pieces
of coursework I had produced. To make sure these three pieces were
completed to the best of my ability. I made sure I got feedback from
my primary audience as well as the wider audience to get a collective
opinion on the professionality of my work. I produced a
questionnaire on survey monkey about the suitability of each of my
pieces of coursework during their planning stages. The reason for me
conducting audience feedback was so I could evaluate my own
performance as well as learn the strengths of each piece of
coursework.
Hearing feedback from my primary audience was beneficial so I
knew whether my work was suitable to my desired target audience.
Marketing towards my audience is important because I wanted to
make sure that my products was suitable to my audience. Equally,
finding out feedback from the wider audience was very beneficial to
me. This was because there would be an unbiased opinion on my
feedback as they were not part of my targeted demographic. This
was also so that I could get their opinions to see whether it was
suitable for the extended audience as I still want my video to appeal
to the wider audience.
All the feedback I received helped me to adapt the three pieces of
work so that it would suit my target audience and also look
professional because I treated the project as if I was a real life music
producer releasing a real music video. This helped me to think more
professionally so I could adapt my work accordingly to make sure my
work looks as realistic as possible.
