Analysis of Previous
Students’ Work

Chosen Blog
I have decided to look at Katie’s work from last year as her
music video had a major narrative base which is what I was
thinking about doing when it came to filming my music video. I
will be looking at how her work has been successful through
the research and planning in order to create a good music
video.
Research Process
When looking at the research tasks, I can see that the first
couple of tasks that she carried out were the History of Music
Videos and the research into existing music videos that she had
for her music video. I had decided at the beginning that I would
also concentrate on the research task rather than the planning
in order to help me contemplate various ideas that could work
for my video.
There are a number of tasks that are set in which we have to
carry out which will help us reach the highest number of marks
for our blogs. It is quite helpful being able to look at previous
students’ work to see the standard in which I must reach to get
a good grade.
Planning Process
When looking at the planning tasks, I can see that one of the
first tasks that was complete was the initial planning ideas and
inspirations from current music videos which are readily
available on the music market. I believe that when I start the
planning process, this would be a good point to start with as I
will be able to gather various ideas and pointers to help me
create my music video.
When looking at Katie’s blog, there are 38 planning posts
compared to 15 research which suggests to me that even
though there is research needed in order to create something
like this, the planning posts are extremely important in order to
create something remotely successful.
The Music Video
The song used for the music video is Medicine by Daughter and
is 4 minutes and 12 seconds long. Overall I believe that the
narrative style of this video is quite simple, however I believe
that this is very effective and draws in the attention of the
audience. With certain elements of the video being in black and
white, but also an almost sepia effect signifies sadness and
helps tell the story of the song and the video which I believe is
key when producing a narrative based video.
The costumes and props used are quite basic with just normal
outfits used on the characters and with a basic setting of a
house will allow the audience to relate to the video quite easily
which is normally quite hard with music videos due to the
extravagant costumes and large, high end locations.
Overview
Overall, I believe that looking at this blog and music video has
helped me gather a good idea as to the standard and quality of
what my work needs to be like. In comparison to other
students’ videos such as ‘Bad Blood’ and ‘Spectrum,’ this video
is not as extravagant in my opinion, however, I believe that is
very effective in telling a story and having that ability to easily
relate to the video with their being a story in which can be seen
in society quite frequently .
Overview
Overall, I believe that looking at this blog and music video has

When looking at Katie’s blog, there are 38 planning posts compared to 15 research which suggests to me that even though there is research needed in order to create something like this, the planning posts are extremely important in order to create something remotely successful.
  • 5. The Music Video The song used for the music video is Medicine by Daughter and is 4 minutes and 12 seconds long. Overall I believe that the narrative style of this video is quite simple, however I believe that this is very effective and draws in the attention of the audience. With certain elements of the video being in black and white, but also an almost sepia effect signifies sadness and helps tell the story of the song and the video which I believe is key when producing a narrative based video. The costumes and props used are quite basic with just normal outfits used on the characters and with a basic setting of a house will allow the audience to relate to the video quite easily which is normally quite hard with music videos due to the extravagant costumes and large, high end locations.

In comparison to other students’ videos such as ‘Bad Blood’ and ‘Spectrum,’ this video is not as extravagant in my opinion, however, I believe that is very effective in telling a story and having that ability to easily relate to the video with their being a story in which can be seen in society quite frequently .
