The document summarizes the results of a survey about audience preferences for short films. The survey found that most respondents were ages 16-20, were students or part-time workers, and watch multiple films per week. Documentaries and storyline/narrative were popular genres and aspects. Respondents felt short films should be 4-6 minutes and convey a message. Most had seen short films before on YouTube or Vimeo. The creator will use these insights to make a documentary-style short film about family that conveys a message and can be shared on popular online platforms.
2. What gender are you?
This question is used in most surveys and it mainly asked to
determined the amount of females and males who took the survey. For
my short film I wanted 10 of each to give the survey mixed opinions.
What old are you?
I know that different age groups will have different opinions in short
films and some age groups might not even watch short films. This
survey has been taken mostly by 16-20 year olds and this could be due
to me publicizing my survey on Facebook and my friends are around
that age. The rest of the survey was taken by around 21+ and ages 15
below. This also demonstrates that the age group of people who were
most interested in Short Films are 16-20 years old.
3. What is your occupation?
The majority of this question was answered by students and part time
working students (9 entries), this question I can tell that time is a
major aspect in students life, a short film is short and simple and easy
to watch, and with this they can gain the same if not more enjoyment
from a featured film. However the difference is a short is quick
compared to a featured film, those will less time would be more
active in watching short films. Whereas unemployed people (3
entries) have more time so they are able to watch more featured films
then shorts, this could be the same for part time workers. Full time
workers also have less time such as students/part-time students so
time is vital for them.
How many films do you watch a week?
This question meant both short films and featured films, I felt that I
wanted to know how many films are actually watched roughly per
week so I could illustrate the amount of films watched per week. It
clearly shows that people watch featured/short films as a majority
of their entertainment.
4. What is your favourite genre?
Documentary seems to be one of the most favourite genre,
from this I know that I will the majority people prefer
watching a documentary from the list of genre I created.
From this I take that I should create a short film with the
genre of Documentary, I already had thought about doing a
documentary and this survey has now lead me to believe my
choice was right.
Have you seen a short film before?
A simple question which holds a lot of important. How many
people have seen a short film before? The majority (14 entries)
have in fact watched short films so this demonstrates that shorts
aren't unknown and a lot of people watch them. However
advertisement will need to impact more than just current short
film watchers but also potential viewers.
5. How long is a short film in your eyes?
Short Films vary in length and I really wanted to know what
is the idea short film. From the survey I have found out that
the ideal length for the short from what my survey tells me is
that 4-6 minutes. Perfect in length, not too much not too
little.
What would you like to receive from watching a
short film?
The main reasons for watching short films are for gaining a
message from the short film, something they can take from
it. I will have to focus on creating a theme/message for my
short film which my audience can take from. So far my initial
idea will be something to do with family.
6. What is your favourite aspect of a film?
This question is sort of the same as the previous question
however more in depth and varies compared to different
viewers. The most common aspect was storyline/narrative,
message received from viewing the short and cinematography.
These will be the three main aspects which I will use for my
short film as that’s what everyone looks for in short.
Where would you look for a short film?
The last question I asked on my survey was one of the most
important about getting my short film viewed. Where do you
look for a short film? From this question I found that YouTube
and Vimeo were the platform where most people find/watch
short films and I will keep this information in mind when I am
finished with my short and want people to view it.
