3. My analysis
This is the front cover of rollingstones magzine, rolllingstones is a popular brand and is known by a lot
of people for it’s fresh taste in music.
The main image on the cover page is of singer/song writer, P!NK, I’d say her image takes up about 75
to 80 percent of the cover indicating that the main feature in the magazine is based on her.
Her head covers the middle of the red masthead which is outlined with white, this indicates that The
RollingStone’s are a well known brand, so well known that they do not need their full masthead to
appear on the magazine cover. They would have a huge amount of consumers buying their product
each week so they wouldn’t need to worry about whether the masthead is visible or not, as long as it is
partially seen, it’s fine.
The house style of this particular cover is red, white and black, the norm for most RollingStone
magazine covers! The black in the background ties in with the main feature story on the front cover,
‘The Dark Side of PINK’, It really represents her inner darkness through the use of black and potrays a
dark theme to the reader.
Above the masthead reads ‘Bloc Party| Snow Patrol| The killers, in most rollingstone magazines these
are featured, usually in white font like this one, this shows the reader the different varieties of artists
that they cover in their magazine, and will hopefully interest the reader due to the use of variety.
4. Comedians names such as Ricky Gervais, Russel Brand, Chris Rock and 40 more are featured on the
front cover of the magazine, this shows the reader that this magazine isn’t just about music, It’s about
all round entertainment. The line ‘and 40 more’ will draw the reader to look inside the magazine as if
they are interested in comedy, they will want to see who the other 40 comedians are. Through doing
this the magazine is stretching out it’s target audience to people who enjoy comedy as well as music.
There is a barcode at the bottom of the magazine, this is for the person working in the shop to scan
into the till when someone purchases the magazine, it also sometimes contains the price and the date
beside it.
‘The most hated man in Rock and Roll’ is another feature on the cover in grey font, this will entice the
reader as they will want to find out who this man is and why he is so hated, this is a strong cover-line
as it will spark curiosity and the reader and make them wish to read the article, therefore purchasing
the magazine.
5. Overall this magazine draws the reader in due to the use of the dark, extreme colours, the huge main
image of PINK, the storylines in huge Grey font and also the interesting stories covered.
