Manchester, England was known as the "Cottonopolis" due to its large cotton mills that employed many workers, including children and women. Children as young as 9 years old worked long hours in dangerous conditions in the mills and mines. They faced health issues from the dust and hard labor. Workers lived in poor conditions near the mills amid smoke and pollution. This led to many health problems and diseases for the workers and their families.
