1. Survey Analysis
To further my research I created a survey to question a selection of people on what they
wanted to get out of a music magazine and to ascertain the most accessible target audience and genre
for creating a popular music magazine.
The first question on the survey was asking the Gender of the participants and out of the 57
people that answered the question 36 (63.16%) answered female and 21 (36.84%) answered male,
showing that approximately two thirds of the participants answering the survey were female and a
third male.
Next the participants were questioned on their age group and out of the 57 people that
answered this question 48 (84.21%) of them fell into the 16-18 age category making this the
predominant age group for the survey by a considerable majority.
After this the participants moved on to being question about their musical tastes and
preferences. Asking the question ‘What is your preferred genre of music?’ the participant’s answers
revealed that Indie/Alternative music was the most popular genre with 32 (59.26%-over half)
participants choosing this as their preferred genre, then Rock with 27 (50%) participants choosing
this and finally Pop with 17 (31.48%) of the participants choosing this. This question was set up as a
multiple choice question as many of the respondents are more than likely to have more than one
preferred genre of
music. These three
genre’s showed as
the top three choices
in the participant’s
responses, however
indie/alternative
music showed a
considerably larger
popularity than any
of the other genre’s,
the only other option
coming close being
Rock.
I then moved
on to question the
participants on
‘What usually
attracts you to a music
magazine and why?’ The
majority of responses to this
question were that The Cover
is what most attracted them
to the magazine with 74.51%
(38) respondents opting for
this answer. This would make
sense as the cover is the first
thing that they would see of
the magazine. Next came the
Image on the magazine and
this would make sense as this
is part of the cover and a
good strong image will attract
the eye of the readers and
entice them into picking the
magazine up and reading
more.
2. I also asked the
participants what
contents they most enjoy
in a music magazine. The
top two answers came
through as Articles on
Artists, which was the
choice of 60.78% (31)
respondents, and
Interviews, which was the
choice of 56.86% (29)
respondents. Other
popular choices were
Events and Lineups and
posters, however how to’s
and posters really didn’t
factor as a popular
choices for the
participants and this
shows me that the people
that read music
magazines want more to
do with the music than
anything else and want
the magazine to focus on
this instead of moving off
onto tangent subjects.
