perform. Those in high positions may think themselves above society and they are fools for that
thinking. As William Shakespeare wrote in his play As You Like It a, "fool doth think he is

In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, satire can be found in the actions of one
character named Piggy. Piggy is the boy that is the nerd or intellectual of the group. Piggy
represents the intellectuals that created that atomic bomb in WWII. Golding was strongly
opposed to the atomic bomb hence the satire in his novel. The first example of satire is found in
chapter two .The boys are trying to start a fire and they are all gathering wood except for Piggy.
Instead of helping Piggy, ". . . just sat." (Golding 39) and watched everyone else do the work. This
is an example of Horatian satire. Golding doesn't outright say that he is making fun of the
intellects, it is subtle. The next piece of satire is in chapter eight. An assembly has been called

Satire is a great tool used by many writers and actors since ancient times. The earliest example that
we know about is a script from 2nd millennium BC in Ancient Egypt (Definition: Satire) and since
then has evolved into a great part of our society. Satire is used to point out the faults of human vice

Satire is a genre of literature that uses wit for the purpose of social criticism and mocks societal
problems, such as in government, business and individuals to bring attention to certain follies, vices,

Each of these articles give very interesting ideas and insightful explanation about satire. Trudeau
(2015) claims the theory of "punching up, not punching down". It means it is acceptable for
satirical writers to crack jokes or mock those people who have higher social status than you.
However, satirizing and making fun of the poor or lower–class people is regarded as a kind of
improper and immoral behavior. I agree with Trudeau (2015)'s opinion to some extent. I can totally
understand the feeling of people who are relatively "unfortunate" compare to others when they're
receiving ironic verbal aggression. Those people don't have good salary. They cannot afford a good

Europe, Voltaire's Candide reflects both his opinion in satire and his own philosophy as a solution to
the conflict.
