2. What is self-
determination?
Definition: Self-determination refers to the ability to
make choices about one’s life. These skills are
learned over the span of the individual’s life and
allows them to take charge of the way they live.
Examples of Self-determination Skills:
• Choice-making
• Decision making
• Problem solving
• Goal setting
• Attainment of skills
• Risk-taking and safety skills
• Self-instruction
• Self observation
• Leadership skills
• Self-awareness
3. Why is Self-Determination so important?
Self-Determination allows for individuals to make their own goals about their lives, and specifically,
their future.
o This is key for development of employment skills
o Involves personal control, motivation, aspirations, confidence, and an overall commitment to
personal growth and development
o Important both pre-transition and post-transition
o Crucial to involve the worker in the decision-making process as much as possible
4. Paths to Employment…
Self-Determination skills allow for individuals to make decisions about employment as well.
Employment can be broken down into various ”pathways” depending on their interests, abilities, and
where they are in the transition process.

“I have a job, but I
want a better
suited job, or to
move up in the
company.”

“I want to work! I
need help finding
a job that fits me.”
7. Place 3:
”I’m not sure about
work. I do not
know what kind of
job I want.”

“I don’t think I
want to work, but I
may not know
enough about it.”

Meet Steve:
Steve has worked in a variety of
settings during his time with TAP
and IMPACT. He found his niche
working at a café on campus, where
he holds many responsibilities while
also working on his customer
service skills. Although Steve enjoys
his current position, he would
eventually like to grown and move
up within the company.
11. Place Three
Meet Megan:
Megan has trialed a few different
internships while she has been
at IMPACT. She has a variety of
interests, although she is not
sure what type of job feels right.
For now, Megan continues to try
new things until she is ready to
decide what’s next.
