Integration, c.1750 to c.1900 How did the technology that was developed between 1750–1900
improve the standard of living and work conditions of the people living during that period and how
did it advance the business and political arenas. Typewriter (1714) The Typewriter was invented in
1714 by a team of three men: Christopher Latham Sholes, Carlos Glidden, and Samuel Soule. The
typewriter was used up till the late 20th century as the best way to write a document in a
professional manner. It increased the efficiency of writing. This made communicating ideas through
print easier, saving businesses money and making workers lives easier. Spinning Jenny (1764) The
spinning Jenny was invented in 1764 by English inventor James Hargreaves. The spinning Jenny
was used to convert wool into yarn. Prior to his invention the yarn producers could not keep up with
the high demand due to the difficult nature of converting wool to yarn, until the invention of the
spinning Jenny which made the process cheaper and much more efficient. It was also very simple to
use so a relatively undereducated farmer could easily learn how to use the device to make yarn for
the farm1. The excess of yarn and string that came about thanks to the spinning Jenny lead to a
higher number of highly efficient looms which decreased the cost of fabric which was a critical need
for clothing the

Mass Media: Development and Literacy Mass media has come a long way the past century. What
started as books, newspapers, and magazines being the only way to receive any news or messages,
has developed into much more than that now. The major developments in the evolution of mass
media during the last century have literally changed our world and the way we get our information.
These developments range from the telegraph, telephone, radio, television, and the Internet. All of
which played a major role in not the way we receive information but also communicate. Instead of
waiting days to get messages, we can now get them as they ... Show more content on

Lastly, we have the Internet. The Internet has completely changed the way humans live day to day.
We can get any news story or message right to the palm of our hand. With technology allowing
people to receive email and search the web from their phones, we do not have to be close to a radio
or television anymore. Anyone can reach out and broadcast a message to millions of people
worldwide with the click of a button. This has been both a positive and a negative. While the media
can reach millions of people, the people receiving the message need to be sure they are checking the
resources. Media convergence is when all the different mass communication outlets merge into one.
This has affected our everyday life by way of the smartphone. Anyone with a smartphone can make
phone calls, listen to the radio, search the web, and receive emails. This has enabled us to receive
any sort of message in real time. Rather than waiting for the news to broadcast a story, many of the
news outlets have applications you can get on your smartphone. These apps have enabled us to read
any of the news stories going on in today's world. Like the Internet, it is important that we always
check the sources. With so many "fake news" sites out there, it can be hard to tell the real stories
from the fake stories. Checking

History of the Telegraph Essay
The electric telegraph is a now outdated communication system that was used to transmit electric
signals over wires from location to location that translated into a message by people at stations.
The non–electric telegraph was invented by Claude Chappe in 1794. This system was visual and
used a semaphore, an alphabet based on flag language, and depended on a line of sight for
communication. This "optical telegraph" was replaced by the electric telegraph, eventually.
In 1809, a crude telegraph was invented in Bavaria by Samuel Soemmering. He used 35 wires with
gold electrodes in water and at the receiving end 2000 feet the message was read by the amount of
gas caused by electrolysis. In 1828, the first telegraph in the USA. was ... Show more content on

However, it was Samuel Morse that would go down in history for bettering Joseph Henry's
invention. Samuel made sketches of a "magnetized magnet" based on Henry's work. He then went
on to invent a telegraph system that was a practical and commercial success.
Samuel Morse
While he was a professor of arts and design at the New York University in 1835, Samuel Morse
proved that signals could be transmitted by wire. He used impulses of electrical current to deflect an
electromagnet, which moved a marker to produce written codes on a strip of paper – thus the
invention of Morse Code. The following year, the device was modified to emboss the paper with
dots and dashes. Samuel gave a public demonstration in 1838, but it was not until five years later
that the Congress funded $30,000 to construct an experimental telegraph line from Washington to
Baltimore, a distance of 40 miles.
Six years later, members of Congress witnessed the sending and receiving of messages over part of
the telegraph line. Before the line had reached Baltimore, the Whig party held its national
convention there, and on May 1, 1844, nominated Henry Clay. This news was hand–carried to
Annapolis Junction (between Washington and Baltimore) where Samuel's partner, Alfred Vail, wired
it to the Capitol. This was the first news dispatched by electric telegraph.
Samuel Morse is best known as the inventor of the

Telephones And Their Impact On American Society
Telephones and their Impact on American Society Communicating with others has always been
important. There have been different forms of communication over the many years like messenger's,
letters, telegraphs, and even radios. With all those ways of connecting to others, none have been
good or effective enough to reach out to the people one would wish to talk to. Our society has
changed in a huge way and part of the reason for that change is the telephone, and as we progress
throughout the years technology becomes even more developed and more influential to our society.
When and where the telephone was invented The idea of the telephone came along sooner than the
real world made it out to be. Antonio Meucci was credited with inventing the first basic phone,
Alexander Graham Bell constructed the first telephone and in 1876 and he ... Show more content on

Amazingly, changes around telephone technology have been more prevalent than to the changes in
basic technology itself. Phones now have circuit boards and various electronics that take place of
rotary dials, the microphone and receiver may be made of the same membrane–carbon–
electromagnet assembly like they have been made for years, or they may create the variance in
electric current some other way. But there is always a membrane which vibrates due to the sound of
your voice and electric current varying because of it and the current may be converted to an FM
radio signal before being broadcast to your phone but it is still the same variance that carries your
voice. Before, the human voice couldn't create enough power to make telephones practical, a call
from only a few miles away would be impossible even with stronger magnets. In 1877, Thomas
Edison designed a new designed and patented transmitter that could easily utilize the special
property of carbon and a call with a much greater distance and

The Omaha Platform
The Omaha Platform was established because Southern and Midwestern farmers believed they were
treated unfairly by the Democrats and the Republicans. The populists proposed a national currency,
coinage of silver to gold at a ratio of sixteen to one, federal loans to farmers, graduated income tax,
abolish national banks, government ownership of railroads, telephone and telegraph systems,
prohibition of alien land ownership, a secret ballot system, civil service reform, immigration
restriction, an eight–hour day, abolition of the Pinkerton system, the right of initiative and
referendum, one term for the office of the President and Vice–President, and direct election of
Senators. I view most of their proposals reasonable, except their demands on restricting immigration
and prohibition of alien land ownership. American Exceptionalism says that it is our destiny to
dominate this continent, but we have specific characteristics that differentiates us from Europeans.
One is American freedom. At this time, the populists excluded immigrants or aliens, so I find these
demands unreasonable. Their beliefs of "that the power of government–in other words, of the
people–should be expanded," ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Communication And Communication : The Comportance Of...
The need to communicate has driven much development in human history, and the need to
communicate over distances too great to shout over has been just as important. From smoke signals
to semaphore, from signposts to sending letters via messenger, we have discovered faster and more
effective means of communicating. Still, it became more and more necessary to communicate
instantly. Early Telecommunications included smoke signals and drums. Talking drums were used
by natives in Africa, New Guinea and South America, and Smoke Signals in North and South
America and China. Tomkins(2005){1} In Rabbinical Judaism a signal was given by means of
Kerchiefs or flags at intervals along the way back to the high priest to indicate the goat "for Azazel"
had been pushed from the cliff. Talking Drums (2006){2} The Greeks in the 4th century BC
developed the first Hydraulic Telegraph which was deployed in combination with Semaphoric fires.
The British developed the second Hydraulic telegraph in the 19th century AD. The British system
operated solely by Hydraulic fluid pressure. Although both systems employed water in their sending
and receiver devices, their transmission media were completely different. The ancient Greek system
transmitted its semaphoric information to the receiver visually, which limited its use to line–of–sight
distances in good visibility weather conditions only. The 19th century British system used water–
filled pipes to effect changes to the water level in the receiver

The Evolution of the Telephone
Would American's lives be the same without having telephones, light, transportation, or labor laws?
That's what Americans would be missing in life without having the Industrial Revolution occurring
in history. The Industrial Revolution was a time of changes from working at home to working in
factories with machines and engines. There were new inventions, upgrades in machinery, railroads,
steamships, and oil booms. The lives of Americans were changed during this time period from 17th
century. The Industrial Revolution shaped the U.S. into what it was today. One invention in
particular was the telephone; its technological advances throughout the years have continued to
explore the imagination. Since its inception, the telephone has ... Show more content on

From the time of its invention to 1880, there were 50000 subscribers of the telephone. However, it
took nearly a hundred years for the system to improve dramatically. The operators were eliminated
because the users could now make their own connection without calling the operators first. By the
1960's – U.S. Telephones total 80,969,000; world's total reaches 159,200,000; telephone companies
were forming everywhere and by 1964, some 2,535 companies were in existence. The more the
telephones improve, the more the people wanted more from it. In the twentieth century, the
telephone is the main medium to reach just about anyone. It is also the favored medium of
communication in the business world. Nowadays, the telephone system can be configured to suit a
business' needs. At my job for example, the telephone has multiple functions. One is the paging
system to reach someone; it can be used to make conference calls to multiple companies at the same
time. With the invention of cellular phones, one can be reached anywhere in the world and be
connected to the internet; as long as you have a signal of course.
Over the centuries, people have been striving towards a fast, reliable means of communication. At
first, those gaps were bridged with language, usable in face–to–face encounters and then written
language, which could be transported over vast distances, though the timeliness of the message left
something to be desired. Some civilizations used

How Did The Industrial Revolution Change The United States
A great number of extradentary and revolutionary things happened during the united states early
history. Between 1600–1900 we built this country from the ground up. We went through multiple
wars, created one of the first working large scale democracy's and created a way of life that is like
none other. There is one major turning point however, that changed the united states forever: The
Industrial Revolution. The industrial revolution originally started in Great Britain. England's' empire
was vast, strong and well founded. It also had a massive population who was willing to buy clothes
and other textile goods. They found that the easiest and cheapest way to do that was with cotton.
How does this lead to the American industrial revolution? Simple. England could not produce their
own cotton because of their frigid climate and began to trade with the southern states. Due to this,
Americas production of raw cotton went from three thousand bales to three million bales in just
seventy years.(citation) (1790–1860) In order to keep up with demand the cotton gin was created
and the united states own industrial revolution began. Many technologies that we see as necessities
today, got their start around the 1800's. Boats with engines and metal such as cargo ships, cruise
ships, and navy ships all stem from Robert Fulton's steam boat. Thomas Edison's ... Show more

Censorship And The Government During The Cold War
A moral panic is a phenomenon that is examined and understood in an unbiased fashion. This type
of panic locates a "folk devil," is shared, remains out of synch with the seriousness it evokes, and
varies in intensity over time (Goode and Ben–Yehuda, 41). On the other hand, a media panic is a
moral panic about the effects of a communications medium of technology (Class lecture: January
27, 2016). Overall, a moral panic is based upon the reaction of society from an event while a media
panic is the reaction of society from a type of technology. This paper looks to examine the
similarities and differences between surveillance in the government today and surveillance in the
government during the Cold War. It will address the effects these events have or had on society
while examining specific media panics that played a role in society's reactions to these historical
events. By providing evidence to prove how these panics affect society, I will examine why these
moral and media panics exist and the impact they have had on society as a whole.
A moral panic develops in a society when there is some type of threat looking to harm the society in
some way. The threat of a nuclear attack by the USSR and its possible plan to control society
through communism aided in the development of a moral panic during the Cold War era (Cold War
History). American fears continued to grow as the relationship between the two countries became
very tense (Hadley). During the Cold War era, the public

Introduction The 19th century developments of firstly the telegraph, and later the telephone, opened
a gateway to a new, closer, more interdependent world. For a country as large as the United States,
with a population now scattered from east to west, the implications were tremendous. The infamous
tyranny of time and distance had been conquered. Widespread acceptance and appreciation,
however, were not immediate. Both inventions met with initial scepticism, ridicule, and even
elements of fear. The wisdom of twenty–first century hindsight makes such reticence seem
incredible and somewhat amusing, but the very magnitude of instantaneous communication was the
source of anxiety in the first recipients as much as of excitement. In an era when ... Show more

The son of a Reverend, Samuel was born in 1791 in Charlestown, Massachusetts. His studies at Yale
refined his primary passion for art, but Morse was also fascinated by the sciences, particularly the
new theories of electricity. The studies he enjoyed at this time fostered his continued interest and
attention to developments in the field, and were to form the basis of his discoveries decades later.
For despite the concentrated efforts of others from the 1820s to create an electromagnetic telegraph,
Morse did not appear to have been aware of these developments and he worked, in the main,
independently. Throughout Morse's financially insecure career as an artist, his studies, both in
America and Europe led him into contact with other men of scientific interests. In 1827 Morse's role
as founder and president of the National Academy of the Arts and Design in New York provided
opportunity to attend lectures on electricity and electromagnetism by James Freeman Dana. A
friendship developed based on their mutual interest which furthered Morse's knowledge in the area.
Years later, Morse was to have a critical chance encounter with a fellow passenger on a steam packet
returning to America from a European trip. A discussion concerning electromagnetism inspired
Morse with a notion of

innovator due to his American patented acoustic telegraph, or, more widely known as the telephone.
Born in Edinburgh, Scotland on 1847 was Alexander Bell. Throughout much of his young schooling
Bell received fairly grades and remained only interested in the sciences. The primary influence for
his research in acoustics came from his deaf mother whom he learned to communicate with despite
her inability to hear. After the death of his brother, Bell and his family moved to Canada. There he
continued his experiments with the harmonic telegraph, a device in which messages could be sent
through a single wire. This proved difficult for Bell because much work

The Ethics Of The And Public And Private Industry
External hacks can cause a business or government millions of dollars as well as the loss of vast
amounts of personal data. What is not as prevalent in the news is how these internal hackers often
use an insider's credentials to gain access to a computer network. Equally as troubling is there are
businesses that disregard the likelihood of a hacker coming from within their own organization.
Cybersecurity should begin internally, however, as in the case of AT&T, "one of world 's largest
communications companies" (AT&T Company Information – Key Facts, n.d.), human beings tend to
be the greatest security vulnerability to the public and private industry. In 1875, Alexander Graham
Bell whose invention efforts for the talking telegraph were financed by Gardiner Hubbard and
Thomas Sanders, invented what is known today as the . These three men for Bell Telephone

Spreading the American Dream: American Economic and Cultural Expansion 1890–1945, is a book
written about America spreading its influence around the world. It's author, Emily S. Rosenberg
writes how America expanded its influence through culture, politics, economics, and business.
Described as the "American Dream," Rosenberg just doesn't tell us what America did, she shows
how it affected the world, and how America was behind the scenes pulling the strings making sure it
carries out its agenda. The thesis of Rosenberg's book, which is stated on page 13 is "This book
narrows its focus to examine the process by which some Americans, guided and justified by the
faiths of liberal–developmentalism, sought to extend their technology–based economy and mass
culture to nearly every part of the world." (Rosenberg, pg13). Rosenberg wants to show us how
America broke free of it's own borders, and through it's own laws and beliefs spread it's influence
around the world. Critiquing this book, we can see if Rosenberg was able to prove her thesis
statement to show how America was spreading the American Dream. Each chapter of Rosenberg's

many cease to remember that we were once one of those influenced countries; a country that

be good or bad. America has had exponential growth in numerous areas and due to numerous things,
especially the Civil War, the Industrial Revolution, and even the Moon Landing. The Civil War is a

America was carried through the 19th century and into the 20th with a new set of inventors and their
inventions. Henry Ford's creation of the car led to teenagers bursting out of their parents'
upbringings as well as allowing for new travel and, ultimately, the cars we have in the 21st century.
Thomas Edison and his lightbulb creation threw out the expense and dangerous gas lamps of the
past and, quite literally, brought the public into the light. The lightbulb has been heavily relied on
since its creation, even to the point where people are left dumbfounded when the power goes out
during a storm and they have nothing to use as light. Samuel Morse's creation of the telegraph vastly
improved communications throughout the world. It changed how people perceived time and
distance, and the telegraph was the precursor of the telephone, radio, television and internet.
Eventually, telegraph wires extended throughout the country. Lastly, Alexander Graham Bell's
telephone rushed threw out Morse's telegraph, as the telephone let people communicate over large
distances very easily. The Industrial Revolution launched America into a technological hub and,
ultimately, allowed for the 20th century America to jump forward and pave out the beginning for
even further technology to be developed. Without the Industrial Revolution and the numerous

Thomas Alva Edison was a man of great talent and determination. A mind of absolute genius that
withheld spectacular and innovative ideas that Edison, himself, could not wait to share with the
world. The list of inventions and developments Edison is often known for are countless. Creations
such as, the electric light, the telephone transmitter, the phonograph, motion picture, electric storage
battery, and mimeograph machine, are just a mere few of his 1,093 United States patents and
thousands more, from twenty–four different nations. Many of Edison's ideas were beyond the
world's understanding. Today, his inventions have greatly influenced the twentieth century, more
than one could ever imagine.
Thomas Edison was born February 11, 1847, in Milan, Ohio. He lived in Milan for seven years,
until his father decided to further his career and start a business in Port Huron, Michigan. Here, he
spent most of his childhood in a small, red brick home. At this home, Thomas found what he is
known for today. Due to Edison struggle in school and inept in mathematics, his mother, a former
teacher, decided to homeschool him. Though bad at school, Edison was eager to read, especially
science books. His love of science, lead him to start doing chemical and mechanical experiments in
the basement of his small home. This might have been the best decision his mother could have made

Thomas. Edison : The Invention Of Thomas Edison
Who is Thomas Edison? Before learning about his other inventions I only knew Thomas Edison as
the man who invented the electrical light bulb. Did you know the light bulb was not Thomas
Edison's only invention? Yes it is the most the popular and is still used today but Thomas Edison is
also responsible for many inventions that have helped make advances in Mass Communications.
These inventions include the kinetograph/kinetophone, phonograph and multiple models of the
telegraph and telephone. Due to the success of these inventions Thomas Edison holds 1,093 U.S
patents and has received a plethora of awards. (Inventors.about.com, n.d.) Thomas Edison's
inventions have made him pioneer in recording music and motion picture, hence making him an
important inventor in the world of Mass Communications. The inventions of Thomas Edison have
been duplicated many times. His work still has an impact on the things that we use today. I believe
Thomas Edison is an inventor with one of the biggest impacts on our modern day technology. Most
of his inventions were ahead of its time making it hard for some people to operate which is why
some of his inventions did not receive as much praise as it should've. (Wikipedia Website , n.d.)
Thomas Alva Edison was born on February 11, 1847 in Milan, Ohio. He always had a passion for
knowledge and was homeschooled by his mother. At the age of 12 Thomas Edison began selling
newspapers along the railroads. While selling newspapers Thomas Edison discovered his access to
the news bulletins that were sent to the office every day. With this newfound information Edison
began to publish his own newspaper called the "Grand Trunk Herald". He also sold this newspaper
along the line of the railroad, his newspaper was very successful with the passengers. In addition to
his interest in newspapers Edison was also fascinated by science. To carry out his science curiosities,
Edison began to perform his own chemical experiments in the baggage car of the trains he'd been
selling his newspapers on. Unfortunately he ignited a small fire and his unofficial laboratory was
discovered. Edison was kicked off the train and was forced to sell his newspapers in various other
stations. Although

How Is It Used To Revolutionize The Telegraph
Technology has advanced throughout the years. Almost every invention has changed in shape, size
and the way it is used. Some even have a different function from they were first made. One of the
most successful creations, is the telephone. Almost everyone has one it is used daily by many
people. The beginning of telephones came around when a man by the name of Samuel Morse,
thought of a way to send messages to people more quickly over long distances. The invention was
created by many other inventors that helped revolutionize the telegraph.
The first telegraph was created in 1835. The telegraph was powered by a battery, which sent a
current through a wire. To keep the signal, the electric created a magnetic field which kept the
electricity running through the copper wire. The idea was to send dots onto a paper by using certain
amounts of taps. These dots represented a letter. The way they read this, was from an alphabet
created by Samuel Morse, which was called visible speech. In the 1800's, the telegraph was the
fastest way of communicating over a long distance. The only problem was if you wanted to send a
message to someone, you would have to take to the post office and have an operator send that
message for you. The operator would use morse code to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Alexander Graham Bell had an had an idea of improving the telegraph by using tuning forks, this
would make it possible to send and receive messages without the electromagnetic fields interfering
with each other. In 1873 he had another idea though, instead of tuning forks, Bell thought of using
small stripss of metal near a coiled wire. This would make a continuous current, but he didn't try it
since the current would be so small. Alexander was a creative man and had yet another idea in 1874.
The idea was to use just strips of metal. He thought he was not skilled enough and also didn't think it
would transmit messages that far, so he forgot all about that

History Of AT & T
AT&T is an American company that provides long distance telephone and other telecommunications
services. The first founder of the company was Alexander Graham Bell. In 1876, he invented the
telephone and made the first wire transmission of intelligible speech. He and two other investors
formed the Bell Telephone Company in 1877. The company was a great competitor of Western
Union Company. From 1878 to 1900, the company was going through many changes. Then, Bell
established the long–distance telephone lines provider company, the American Telephone and
Telegraph Company, known as AT&T for short. The Bell Company's patent expired after the
agreement to give up all patents in the war of control between the Vanderbilts and Jay Gould.

Communicating Information: History Of Britain And The...
Communicating information always has been extremely important. Throughout history, some
information has had value beyond measure. The lack of information often costs huge amounts of
money and, sometimes, many lives.
One example of this took place near New Orleans, Louisiana. Britain and the United States were
fighting the War of Eighteen Twelve. The Battle of New Orleans is a famous battle. As in all large
battles, hundreds of troops were killed or wounded.
After the battle, the Americans and the British learned there had been no need to fight. Negotiators
for the United States and Britain had signed a peace treaty in the city of Ghent, Belgium, two weeks
earlier. Yet news of the treaty had not reached the United States before the ... Show more content on

If you had a radio, you did not have to wait until your newspaper arrived. You could often hear
important events as they happened.
Some people learned quickly that information meant power. In the nineteen thirties, many countries
began controlling information. The government of Nazi Germany is a good example.
Before and during World War Two, the government of Nazi Germany controlled all information the
German people received. The government controlled all radio broadcasts and newspapers. The
people of Germany only heard or read what the government wanted them to hear or read. It was
illegal for them to listen to a foreign broadcast.
After World War Two, a new invention appeared –– television. In industrial nations, television
quickly became common in most homes. Large companies were formed to produce television
programs. These companies were called networks. Networks include many television stations linked
together that could broadcast the same program at the same time.
Most programs were designed to entertain people. There were movies, music programs and game
programs. However, television also broadcast news and important information about world events. It
broadcast some education programs, too. The number of radio and television stations around the
world increased. It became harder for a dictator to control information.

Case Report: AT&T: Twenty Years of Change
AT&T Case depicts the history of 130 years old giant company, which served its customers in
telecommunications area. From its foundation by Graham Bell in 1875 to the restructuring decision
in 2000, the company had many key events to be studied in terms of several strategic management
point of views. This paper mainly focuses on external environment issues and corporate–level
strategies.
Analysis with respect to Corporate–Level Strategy

Hence, a second divestiture – a restructuring – became a requisite. Therefore AT&T spent $4B for
restructuring including the spin–off of Lucent Company and NCR. Considering from the point of
corporate–level strategy, it was impossible for AT&T to be successful with Lucent, since none of the
AT&T's competitors would buy contracts from Lucent due to privacy issues.
Additionally, AT&T failed to create synergy with taking over the NCR computer company. Since the
integration of the operations failed, the firm lacked the operational relatedness. Moreover, transfer of
corporate skills – if there were any – did not become beneficiary for AT&T. In fact, in the NCR case
a serious management error in terms of the integration was apparent: "the corporate clash [ in NCR ]
resulted in confusion, complacency, and loss of direction" since AT&T intervened the management
starting from the third year of take–over.
In 1997, Michael Armstrong appointed as the CEO of AT&T. Armstrong's vision was to transform
AT&T "from a long distance company into an 'any distance' company. Indeed, he took many actions
to diversify the company. This diversification was a related constrained one, where the company
expected to created operational and corporate relatedness.
As a result of this policy a local telecommunication provider (TCG) was acquired. However the
most crucial category of diversification was on the area of cable division: An

Vail's philosophy, which would become the philosophy of the entire company, was "One Policy, One
System, Universal Service." This essentially meant the Vial wanted AT&T and AT&T alone to run
the telephones in the United States. They started by buying up all the smaller companies in the
industry and exponentially increasing their company. It was when AT&T showed an interest in
Western Union Telegraph that the government really started to take an active interest in this growing
monopoly. In 1913, both parties agreed on the Kingsbury Commitment which attempted to halt the
total take over by American Telephone and Telegraph that most people assumed would take place.
The main part of the agreement was that AT&T would not take total control of Western Union
Telegraph and the government would not pursue a federal case against AT&T as a monopoly.
However, this agreement still gave AT&T some, if not, most of the control over Western Union
Telegraph as long as it still allowed part of the company to be owned by independent parties. Of
course this agreement angered a great deal of people as it essentially allowed the company to

How Did The Industrial Revolution Change America
The Industrial Revolution was a pivotal moment in American history as it marked the shift from an
agrarian economy to an industrial. It sparked the growth of communication and transportation
sectors. This allowed the country to become more connected and more efficient. The major changes
in America during this time allowed for economic growth at the state level. The Industrial
Revolution was the key factor in American advancements in communication, transportation, and
economic growth. These upgraded industries propelled us to where we are as a country today. The
transition from an agricultural to an industrial economy took quite some time for America to
complete. Humanity saw the making of materials go from handmade to machine made, and this ...

Americans can thank the Gilded Age for this, as a lot of new inventions revolving around
communication were put into use and advanced the country one step closer to the modern world we
live in today. The telephone and telegraph were arguably the most significant inventions of the
Industrial Revolution. The telephone made communication more efficient, instead of having to write
a letter and mail it, you could use an invention to speak immediately. Not only did the telegraph
make communication easier as well, it also helped the unity of the nation, people we're able to talk
with each other from different parts of the country easier (www.history.com/topics/industrial–
revolution). The telegraph made the standard of living for Americans better. The telegraph made
railroads easier to function at the time, which was extremely important because that meant the
shipping of goods and raw materials could be faster and go be delivered from longer distances, thus
this form of communication boosted the American economy's strength. "The telegraph stretched
across the continent as did the railroads, the telephone and typewriter were invented, and a cable
was successfully laid across the atlantic ocean providing quicker and cheaper communication
between the continents." (Robert V. Remini, 172). The radio however, was completely and utterly
revolutionary. The radio engaged the nation on every issue there was, and because of it every
american was on page and up to date on what was going on with the country weather it was
politically, athletically, or anything. During the great depression for example, the president would
speak to all of the american people through the radio reassuring them, telling them all what they
needed to do to make sure the country's economy could be reliable again. The radio made
communication more efficient just as the last two inventions, but it helped business in a

History of Communication Essay
Since the beginning of time, people have always been looking for means of communication, but a
way to communicate in a fast and easy way. In earlier times, Egyptians carved on rocks, leaving
records for the next civilization. The Incans of South America knotted several colored pieces of
string in a specific pattern and had a messenger run to the next village to deliver it. Many wrote
messages on paper to be delivered by a messenger and some simply sent a messenger to deliver the
message orally. Of course, there were many problems with these means of communication. If one
just sent a messenger, it was easy for the messenger to lose communication in the traveling process,
or one could misplace a written message. And of course these messages ... Show more content on

When the line was officially completed on May 24, 1844, the message, "What hath God wrought,"
was the first message sent over the completed line. It was sent from the old Supreme Court chamber
in the United States Capitol to his partner in Baltimore. Annie Ellsworth, the daughter of a friend of
Morse's, chose the verse from Numbers 23:23. This was a very significant point in history as an
improvement in communication; however, the message was difficult to understand at times and was
very difficult and tedious to create.
The telegraph did wonders to speed up process of communication; however, it was still not ideal for
everyday interaction between families and neighbors. The telegraph Morse invented was a single
telegraph, sending one message at a time, so Alexander Graham Bell tried to create a multiple
telegraph, sending more than one message over the same wire. At the same time, Bell and Thomas
Watson, an electrician, were working on another idea in secret – the telephone. On June 2, 1875,
Alexander Graham Bell discovered he could hear a sound over an electric wire, the sound of a
twanging clock spring. On March 10, 1876, Bell explained in his notebook entry that his experiment
was finally successful. That day he said the famous first words spoken into a telephone, "Mr.
Watson, come here, I want you." Finally solving the problems of the telegraph, Bell invented the
telephone. The telegraph system was in place for about thirty years already, taking the telephone

Telegraph, radios and telephones, the cellphone is the best way to communicate. Throughout
generations, there has been many improvements and changes made to the cellphone that made it
possible for the cellphone to replace computers and cameras. Nowadays cellphones such as iPhone
and Android are not only used for texting and calling, they are now used for video calling, browsing
the internet, taking pictures and much more. Before the invention of the cellphone, there were many
other ways to communicate. Smoke was used to create codes that would later be converted into
messages. They are called smoke signals. Many Native Americans used to use this system. After
many years went by, Communication has evolved and Animals were used. Animals such as pigeons
and Horses were used to send messages back and forth. Pigeons would be trained to fly across many
nations and towns delivering important messages. Horses would also for transporting important
messages. During the 1700s, Paul revere warned the town about the British, He warned everybody
by yelling " The British are coming." If it wasn't for the horse, and his important shout, we wouldn't

Inventions During The Industrial Revolution
One of the most important periods of history was the Industrial Revolution. Many of the inventions
made during this time make our everyday life possible. The Industrial Revolution was the period of
time during the 18th and 19th centuries when new technological advancements changed the face of
industry. These changes had a lasting impact on the economies of the world and the lives of average
people. There were hundreds of inventions during this time period. These inventions resulted in
advances in new energy sources, communication and transport.
The First Industrial Revolution made few advances in communications. Improvements in
communication technology were made with the discovery of electricity in the Second Industrial
Revolution. In 1838, Samuel Morse (an American inventor) invented the telegraph. He also invented
a code of dots and dashes that could be passed on with the telegraph. The code was called Morse

Coal was a vital source of fuel. Coal was also used to power the steam engine. One of the most
important sources of power in the early Industrial Revolution was the steam engine. This allowed
for machines with moving parts to be moved without manpower needing to be used. Steam engines
found many uses in a variety of industries. Steam engines allowed the creation of smaller and better
engines. Eventually, steam engines found their way into boats, railways, farms and automobiles.
During the First Industrial Revolution, the fastest mode of transportation was the railway. While
railways were effective for long–distance travel, short–distance travel was restricted to horse and
carriage. During the Second Industrial Revolution, advances were made in transportation. Horses
were replaced by oil and electric powered vehicles. Electricity replaced steam power. Industrial

The two main actions that the United States government issued towards the Plains Indians were the
Homestead Act and the Dawes Act. The Homestead Act correlated with the trend of Manifest
Destiny and encouraged settlers to migrate west. The Homestead Act encouraged western migration
by providing 160 acres of public land. In exchange, homesteaders paid a small filing fee and were
required to complete five years of continuous residence before receiving ownership of the land.
After six months of residency, homesteaders also had the option of purchasing the land from the
government for roughly $1.25 per acre. (Primary Documents in American History) The land that the
government was distributing belonged to various tribes of the Plains Indians. By having the
Homestead Act in effect and encouraging settlers to migrate west, Plains Indians were forced into
reservations. The real impact of Manifest Destiny was that it sent many settlers west, without
realizing that the settlers were taking land from the Indians. The Indians that lived in the
reservations had just enough food to keep their population alive, as well as living in unsanitary
conditions with bacteria and diseases everywhere. The two options that the Indians had was to either
live in the reservations with little to no food or to face genocide. Some Indian tribes tried to make
amends with American troops who ushered the natives to reservations, but some American troops
turned on the Indians. One incident of the American troops killing Indians was the Nez Perce war.
This war was over a conflict of land and how some US troops did not agree on the settlement of the
land. The war resulted in over 100 casualties towards the Indians and was stated as a genocide of
and Indian tribe. The second act that was passed by the United States government was the Dawes

The Key Inventions In The Industrial Revolution
THE ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH commonly known as TELEGRAPH The Telegraph changed
everything from how wars were fought to how people would communicate in a faster and more
efficient manner. This invention along with the Steam Engine, was one of the key inventions in the
Industrial Revolution. Why was this? Up until this time, it took many hours, days and even months
for letters to arrive at their destination. Due to the time delay in the delivery of letters, when they
finally did arrive, the information contained in them was usually irrelevant, as such a great deal of
time had passed by. For example, if somebody sent a letter stating that a family member was ill, by
the time the time the person to whom the letter was written received the letter, the sick person could

The Invention Of The Telephone
Most people use telephones on a daily basis, usually without the user considering what process the
inventors like Alexander Graham Bell went through in order to produce the first ever version of this
device. The telephone has served an important role in connecting people throughout the world with
the push of a few buttons. First beginning its journey in the 1830s, the telephone started out as a
simple telegraph, invented by Samuel Morse (history.com). According to Antonio, the telegraph was
the first seen form of long distance communication. The telegraph evolved slowly within the years
to come as Alex Graham Bell sought to improve this machinery and advance it in hope of creating
hearing aids for his mother (pbs.org). Throughout time the telegraph evolved into what today's
generation calls a telephone. Alexander Graham Bell was a Scottish American who first came to the
United States as an adult. (Farley). He served as a teacher for deaf students (pbs.org). His mother
was hearing–impaired. Graham sought to create a type of hearing aid in order to help his mother and
other hearing impaired students. Along the way while tinkering with the telegraph in hopes to invent
some sort of a hearing aid, Bell accidently stumbled upon the telephone. Therefore, instead of
inventing hearing aids, which is what he initially set out to do, he invented the telephone. First
approaching the Western Union with high hopes of having an investor for the research of his
product, Alexander

understand the environment contemplated by such a merger, this paper will examine the history of
antitrust laws in the United States; with particular focus on the monopolies serving as a template for
what would happen should the merger occur. Finally, the paper will make an assertion as to the

Moral Panics And Media Panics
Moral Panics and Media Panics

He loved his science classes and he learned more and more about speech. Aleck also spent hours

elder Bell encouraged Alexander and instilled an appreciation for learning and intellectual pursuits.
By age 16, he had joined his father in his work with the deaf and soon had full charge of his father's
London operations. In July, 1870, the family settled in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. There, they had
set up a workshop to continue his study on the human voice. In 1871, Bell moved to Boston and he
began to work on a device that would allow the telegraph transmission of several messages set to
different frequencies. He found financial backing through two local investors. These local investors
had been Thomas Sanders and Gardiner Hubbard. At this time, a device called the telegraph was the
fastest way to send messages. Between 1873 and 1874, Bell spent long days and nights trying to
perfect the telegraph. Bell wanted to make the telegraph work faster and to find a way to send more
than one message over a wire at a time. While he was working on that, he got an even bigger idea.
What if voices could travel by wire from place to place? That would be faster than the telegraph.

How Technology 1750-1900 Improved Lives and Business

  • 1. How Did The Technology That Developed Between 1750-1900... Jonathan Schnurr 4/17/15 AP World History Period.6 Period 5 Industrialization and Global Integration, c.1750 to c.1900 How did the technology that was developed between 1750–1900 improve the standard of living and work conditions of the people living during that period and how did it advance the business and political arenas. Typewriter (1714) The Typewriter was invented in 1714 by a team of three men: Christopher Latham Sholes, Carlos Glidden, and Samuel Soule. The typewriter was used up till the late 20th century as the best way to write a document in a professional manner. It increased the efficiency of writing. This made communicating ideas through print easier, saving businesses money and making workers lives easier. Spinning Jenny (1764) The spinning Jenny was invented in 1764 by English inventor James Hargreaves. The spinning Jenny was used to convert wool into yarn. Prior to his invention the yarn producers could not keep up with the high demand due to the difficult nature of converting wool to yarn, until the invention of the spinning Jenny which made the process cheaper and much more efficient. It was also very simple to use so a relatively undereducated farmer could easily learn how to use the device to make yarn for the farm1. The excess of yarn and string that came about thanks to the spinning Jenny lead to a higher number of highly efficient looms which decreased the cost of fabric which was a critical need for clothing the ... • 3. Mass Media Essay Mass Media: Development and Literacy Alex Mitchell HUM/186 September 25,2017 Allyson Wells Mass Media: Development and Literacy Mass media has come a long way the past century. What started as books, newspapers, and magazines being the only way to receive any news or messages, has developed into much more than that now. The major developments in the evolution of mass media during the last century have literally changed our world and the way we get our information. These developments range from the telegraph, telephone, radio, television, and the Internet. All of which played a major role in not the way we receive information but also communicate. Instead of waiting days to get messages, we can now get them as they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lastly, we have the Internet. The Internet has completely changed the way humans live day to day. We can get any news story or message right to the palm of our hand. With technology allowing people to receive email and search the web from their phones, we do not have to be close to a radio or television anymore. Anyone can reach out and broadcast a message to millions of people worldwide with the click of a button. This has been both a positive and a negative. While the media can reach millions of people, the people receiving the message need to be sure they are checking the resources. Media convergence is when all the different mass communication outlets merge into one. This has affected our everyday life by way of the smartphone. Anyone with a smartphone can make phone calls, listen to the radio, search the web, and receive emails. This has enabled us to receive any sort of message in real time. Rather than waiting for the news to broadcast a story, many of the news outlets have applications you can get on your smartphone. These apps have enabled us to read any of the news stories going on in today's world. Like the Internet, it is important that we always check the sources. With so many "fake news" sites out there, it can be hard to tell the real stories from the fake stories. Checking ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. History of the Telegraph Essay The electric telegraph is a now outdated communication system that was used to transmit electric signals over wires from location to location that translated into a message by people at stations. The non–electric telegraph was invented by Claude Chappe in 1794. This system was visual and used a semaphore, an alphabet based on flag language, and depended on a line of sight for communication. This "optical telegraph" was replaced by the electric telegraph, eventually. In 1809, a crude telegraph was invented in Bavaria by Samuel Soemmering. He used 35 wires with gold electrodes in water and at the receiving end 2000 feet the message was read by the amount of gas caused by electrolysis. In 1828, the first telegraph in the USA. was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, it was Samuel Morse that would go down in history for bettering Joseph Henry's invention. Samuel made sketches of a "magnetized magnet" based on Henry's work. He then went on to invent a telegraph system that was a practical and commercial success. Samuel Morse While he was a professor of arts and design at the New York University in 1835, Samuel Morse proved that signals could be transmitted by wire. He used impulses of electrical current to deflect an electromagnet, which moved a marker to produce written codes on a strip of paper – thus the invention of Morse Code. The following year, the device was modified to emboss the paper with dots and dashes. Samuel gave a public demonstration in 1838, but it was not until five years later that the Congress funded $30,000 to construct an experimental telegraph line from Washington to Baltimore, a distance of 40 miles. Six years later, members of Congress witnessed the sending and receiving of messages over part of the telegraph line. Before the line had reached Baltimore, the Whig party held its national convention there, and on May 1, 1844, nominated Henry Clay. This news was hand–carried to Annapolis Junction (between Washington and Baltimore) where Samuel's partner, Alfred Vail, wired it to the Capitol. This was the first news dispatched by electric telegraph. Samuel Morse is best known as the inventor of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Telephones And Their Impact On American Society Telephones and their Impact on American Society Communicating with others has always been important. There have been different forms of communication over the many years like messenger's, letters, telegraphs, and even radios. With all those ways of connecting to others, none have been good or effective enough to reach out to the people one would wish to talk to. Our society has changed in a huge way and part of the reason for that change is the telephone, and as we progress throughout the years technology becomes even more developed and more influential to our society. When and where the telephone was invented The idea of the telephone came along sooner than the real world made it out to be. Antonio Meucci was credited with inventing the first basic phone, Alexander Graham Bell constructed the first telephone and in 1876 and he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Amazingly, changes around telephone technology have been more prevalent than to the changes in basic technology itself. Phones now have circuit boards and various electronics that take place of rotary dials, the microphone and receiver may be made of the same membrane–carbon– electromagnet assembly like they have been made for years, or they may create the variance in electric current some other way. But there is always a membrane which vibrates due to the sound of your voice and electric current varying because of it and the current may be converted to an FM radio signal before being broadcast to your phone but it is still the same variance that carries your voice. Before, the human voice couldn't create enough power to make telephones practical, a call from only a few miles away would be impossible even with stronger magnets. In 1877, Thomas Edison designed a new designed and patented transmitter that could easily utilize the special property of carbon and a call with a much greater distance and ... • 9. The Omaha Platform The Omaha Platform was established because Southern and Midwestern farmers believed they were treated unfairly by the Democrats and the Republicans. The populists proposed a national currency, coinage of silver to gold at a ratio of sixteen to one, federal loans to farmers, graduated income tax, abolish national banks, government ownership of railroads, telephone and telegraph systems, prohibition of alien land ownership, a secret ballot system, civil service reform, immigration restriction, an eight–hour day, abolition of the Pinkerton system, the right of initiative and referendum, one term for the office of the President and Vice–President, and direct election of Senators. I view most of their proposals reasonable, except their demands on restricting immigration and prohibition of alien land ownership. American Exceptionalism says that it is our destiny to dominate this continent, but we have specific characteristics that differentiates us from Europeans. One is American freedom. At this time, the populists excluded immigrants or aliens, so I find these demands unreasonable. Their beliefs of "that the power of government–in other words, of the people–should be expanded," ... The gold standard is abandoned, government ownership of railroads, telephone and telegraph systems isn't resolved, and the president can have two four year terms in office. • 11. Communication And Communication : The Comportance Of... The need to communicate has driven much development in human history, and the need to communicate over distances too great to shout over has been just as important. From smoke signals to semaphore, from signposts to sending letters via messenger, we have discovered faster and more effective means of communicating. Still, it became more and more necessary to communicate instantly. Early Telecommunications included smoke signals and drums. Talking drums were used by natives in Africa, New Guinea and South America, and Smoke Signals in North and South America and China. Tomkins(2005){1} In Rabbinical Judaism a signal was given by means of Kerchiefs or flags at intervals along the way back to the high priest to indicate the goat "for Azazel" had been pushed from the cliff. Talking Drums (2006){2} The Greeks in the 4th century BC developed the first Hydraulic Telegraph which was deployed in combination with Semaphoric fires. The British developed the second Hydraulic telegraph in the 19th century AD. The British system operated solely by Hydraulic fluid pressure. Although both systems employed water in their sending and receiver devices, their transmission media were completely different. The ancient Greek system transmitted its semaphoric information to the receiver visually, which limited its use to line–of–sight distances in good visibility weather conditions only. The 19th century British system used water– filled pipes to effect changes to the water level in the receiver ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. The Evolution of the Telephone Would American's lives be the same without having telephones, light, transportation, or labor laws? That's what Americans would be missing in life without having the Industrial Revolution occurring in history. The Industrial Revolution was a time of changes from working at home to working in factories with machines and engines. There were new inventions, upgrades in machinery, railroads, steamships, and oil booms. The lives of Americans were changed during this time period from 17th century. The Industrial Revolution shaped the U.S. into what it was today. One invention in particular was the telephone; its technological advances throughout the years have continued to explore the imagination. Since its inception, the telephone has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From the time of its invention to 1880, there were 50000 subscribers of the telephone. However, it took nearly a hundred years for the system to improve dramatically. The operators were eliminated because the users could now make their own connection without calling the operators first. By the 1960's – U.S. Telephones total 80,969,000; world's total reaches 159,200,000; telephone companies were forming everywhere and by 1964, some 2,535 companies were in existence. The more the telephones improve, the more the people wanted more from it. In the twentieth century, the telephone is the main medium to reach just about anyone. It is also the favored medium of communication in the business world. Nowadays, the telephone system can be configured to suit a business' needs. At my job for example, the telephone has multiple functions. One is the paging system to reach someone; it can be used to make conference calls to multiple companies at the same time. With the invention of cellular phones, one can be reached anywhere in the world and be connected to the internet; as long as you have a signal of course. Over the centuries, people have been striving towards a fast, reliable means of communication. At first, those gaps were bridged with language, usable in face–to–face encounters and then written language, which could be transported over vast distances, though the timeliness of the message left something to be desired. • 15. How Did The Industrial Revolution Change The United States A great number of extradentary and revolutionary things happened during the united states early history. Between 1600–1900 we built this country from the ground up. We went through multiple wars, created one of the first working large scale democracy's and created a way of life that is like none other. There is one major turning point however, that changed the united states forever: The Industrial Revolution. The industrial revolution originally started in Great Britain. England's' empire was vast, strong and well founded. It also had a massive population who was willing to buy clothes and other textile goods. They found that the easiest and cheapest way to do that was with cotton. How does this lead to the American industrial revolution? Simple. England could not produce their own cotton because of their frigid climate and began to trade with the southern states. Due to this, Americas production of raw cotton went from three thousand bales to three million bales in just seventy years.(citation) (1790–1860) In order to keep up with demand the cotton gin was created and the united states own industrial revolution began. • 17. Censorship And The Government During The Cold War A moral panic is a phenomenon that is examined and understood in an unbiased fashion. This type of panic locates a "folk devil," is shared, remains out of synch with the seriousness it evokes, and varies in intensity over time (Goode and Ben–Yehuda, 41). On the other hand, a media panic is a moral panic about the effects of a communications medium of technology (Class lecture: January 27, 2016). Overall, a moral panic is based upon the reaction of society from an event while a media panic is the reaction of society from a type of technology. This paper looks to examine the similarities and differences between surveillance in the government today and surveillance in the government during the Cold War. It will address the effects these events have or had on society while examining specific media panics that played a role in society's reactions to these historical events. By providing evidence to prove how these panics affect society, I will examine why these moral and media panics exist and the impact they have had on society as a whole. A moral panic develops in a society when there is some type of threat looking to harm the society in some way. The threat of a nuclear attack by the USSR and its possible plan to control society through communism aided in the development of a moral panic during the Cold War era (Cold War History). American fears continued to grow as the relationship between the two countries became very tense (Hadley). During the Cold War era, the public ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Introduction The 19th century developments of firstly the telegraph, and later the telephone, opened a gateway to a new, closer, more interdependent world. For a country as large as the United States, with a population now scattered from east to west, the implications were tremendous. The infamous tyranny of time and distance had been conquered. Widespread acceptance and appreciation, however, were not immediate. Both inventions met with initial scepticism, ridicule, and even elements of fear. The wisdom of twenty–first century hindsight makes such reticence seem incredible and somewhat amusing, but the very magnitude of instantaneous communication was the source of anxiety in the first recipients as much as of excitement. His studies at Yale refined his primary passion for art, but Morse was also fascinated by the sciences, particularly the new theories of electricity. The studies he enjoyed at this time fostered his continued interest and attention to developments in the field, and were to form the basis of his discoveries decades later. For despite the concentrated efforts of others from the 1820s to create an electromagnetic telegraph, Morse did not appear to have been aware of these developments and he worked, in the main, independently. Throughout Morse's financially insecure career as an artist, his studies, both in America and Europe led him into contact with other men of scientific interests. In 1827 Morse's role as founder and president of the National Academy of the Arts and Design in New York provided opportunity to attend lectures on electricity and electromagnetism by James Freeman Dana. A friendship developed based on their mutual interest which furthered Morse's knowledge in the area. Years later, Morse was to have a critical chance encounter with a fellow passenger on a steam packet returning to America from a European trip. Although not an American born citizen, Alexander Graham Bell can be credited as an American innovator due to his American patented acoustic telegraph, or, more widely known as the telephone. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland on 1847 was Alexander Bell. Throughout much of his young schooling Bell received fairly grades and remained only interested in the sciences. The primary influence for his research in acoustics came from his deaf mother whom he learned to communicate with despite her inability to hear. After the death of his brother, Bell and his family moved to Canada. There he continued his experiments with the harmonic telegraph, a device in which messages could be sent through a single wire. What is not as prevalent in the news is how these internal hackers often use an insider's credentials to gain access to a computer network. Equally as troubling is there are businesses that disregard the likelihood of a hacker coming from within their own organization. Cybersecurity should begin internally, however, as in the case of AT&T, "one of world 's largest communications companies" (AT&T Company Information – Key Facts, n.d.), human beings tend to be the greatest security vulnerability to the public and private industry. Spreading the American Dream: American Economic and Cultural Expansion 1890–1945, is a book written about America spreading its influence around the world. It's author, Emily S. Rosenberg writes how America expanded its influence through culture, politics, economics, and business. Described as the "American Dream," Rosenberg just doesn't tell us what America did, she shows how it affected the world, and how America was behind the scenes pulling the strings making sure it carries out its agenda. The thesis of Rosenberg's book, which is stated on page 13 is "This book narrows its focus to examine the process by which some Americans, guided and justified by the faiths of liberal–developmentalism, sought to extend their technology–based economy and mass culture to nearly every part of the world." (Rosenberg, pg13). Rosenberg wants to show us how America broke free of it's own borders, and through it's own laws and beliefs spread it's influence around the world. Critiquing this book, we can see if Rosenberg was able to prove her thesis statement to show how America was spreading the American Dream. Each chapter of Rosenberg's Spreading the American Dream: American Economic and Cultural Expansion 1890–1945, show different ways America influenced the world. However, many cease to remember that we were once one of those influenced countries; a country that allowed others and their actions to shape how we think. Regardless, the country of America has grown into something that not even the founding fathers could have ever dreamed about, whether it be good or bad. America has had exponential growth in numerous areas and due to numerous things, especially the Civil War, the Industrial Revolution, and even the Moon Landing. Thomas Edison and his lightbulb creation threw out the expense and dangerous gas lamps of the past and, quite literally, brought the public into the light. The lightbulb has been heavily relied on since its creation, even to the point where people are left dumbfounded when the power goes out during a storm and they have nothing to use as light. Samuel Morse's creation of the telegraph vastly improved communications throughout the world. It changed how people perceived time and distance, and the telegraph was the precursor of the telephone, radio, television and internet. Eventually, telegraph wires extended throughout the country. Lastly, Alexander Graham Bell's telephone rushed threw out Morse's telegraph, as the telephone let people communicate over large distances very easily. Macy Nixon Mrs. Molzahn American Literature May 20, 2015 Inspiration or Perspiration Thomas Alva Edison was a man of great talent and determination. A mind of absolute genius that withheld spectacular and innovative ideas that Edison, himself, could not wait to share with the world. The list of inventions and developments Edison is often known for are countless. Creations such as, the electric light, the telephone transmitter, the phonograph, motion picture, electric storage battery, and mimeograph machine, are just a mere few of his 1,093 United States patents and thousands more, from twenty–four different nations. Many of Edison's ideas were beyond the world's understanding. Today, his inventions have greatly influenced the twentieth century, more than one could ever imagine. Thomas Edison was born February 11, 1847, in Milan, Ohio. He lived in Milan for seven years, until his father decided to further his career and start a business in Port Huron, Michigan. Here, he spent most of his childhood in a small, red brick home. At this home, Thomas found what he is known for today. Due to Edison struggle in school and inept in mathematics, his mother, a former teacher, decided to homeschool him. Though bad at school, Edison was eager to read, especially science books. His love of science, lead him to start doing chemical and mechanical experiments in the basement of his small home. Did you know the light bulb was not Thomas Edison's only invention? Yes it is the most the popular and is still used today but Thomas Edison is also responsible for many inventions that have helped make advances in Mass Communications. These inventions include the kinetograph/kinetophone, phonograph and multiple models of the telegraph and telephone. Due to the success of these inventions Thomas Edison holds 1,093 U.S patents and has received a plethora of awards. (Inventors.about.com, n.d.) Thomas Edison's inventions have made him pioneer in recording music and motion picture, hence making him an important inventor in the world of Mass Communications. The inventions of Thomas Edison have been duplicated many times. His work still has an impact on the things that we use today. I believe Thomas Edison is an inventor with one of the biggest impacts on our modern day technology. Most of his inventions were ahead of its time making it hard for some people to operate which is why some of his inventions did not receive as much praise as it should've. (Wikipedia Website , n.d.) Thomas Alva Edison was born on February 11, 1847 in Milan, Ohio. He always had a passion for knowledge and was homeschooled by his mother. At the age of 12 Thomas Edison began selling newspapers along the railroads. While selling newspapers Thomas Edison discovered his access to the news bulletins that were sent to the office every day. With this newfound information Edison began to publish his own newspaper called the "Grand Trunk Herald". He also sold this newspaper along the line of the railroad, his newspaper was very successful with the passengers. In addition to his interest in newspapers Edison was also fascinated by science. To carry out his science curiosities, Edison began to perform his own chemical experiments in the baggage car of the trains he'd been selling his newspapers on. Unfortunately he ignited a small fire and his unofficial laboratory was discovered. Edison was kicked off the train and was forced to sell his newspapers in various other stations. Although ... Some even have a different function from they were first made. One of the most successful creations, is the telephone. Almost everyone has one it is used daily by many people. The beginning of telephones came around when a man by the name of Samuel Morse, thought of a way to send messages to people more quickly over long distances. The invention was created by many other inventors that helped revolutionize the telegraph. The first telegraph was created in 1835. The telegraph was powered by a battery, which sent a current through a wire. To keep the signal, the electric created a magnetic field which kept the electricity running through the copper wire. The idea was to send dots onto a paper by using certain amounts of taps. These dots represented a letter. The way they read this, was from an alphabet created by Samuel Morse, which was called visible speech. In the 1800's, the telegraph was the fastest way of communicating over a long distance. The only problem was if you wanted to send a message to someone, you would have to take to the post office and have an operator send that message for you. The operator would use morse code to ... Americans can thank the Gilded Age for this, as a lot of new inventions revolving around communication were put into use and advanced the country one step closer to the modern world we live in today. The telephone and telegraph were arguably the most significant inventions of the Industrial Revolution. The telephone made communication more efficient, instead of having to write a letter and mail it, you could use an invention to speak immediately. Not only did the telegraph make communication easier as well, it also helped the unity of the nation, people we're able to talk with each other from different parts of the country easier (www.history.com/topics/industrial– revolution). The telegraph made the standard of living for Americans better. The telegraph made railroads easier to function at the time, which was extremely important because that meant the shipping of goods and raw materials could be faster and go be delivered from longer distances, thus this form of communication boosted the American economy's strength. "The telegraph stretched across the continent as did the railroads, the telephone and typewriter were invented, and a cable was successfully laid across the atlantic ocean providing quicker and cheaper communication between the continents." (Robert V. Remini, 172). The radio however, was completely and utterly revolutionary. The radio engaged the nation on every issue there was, and because of it every american was on page and up to date on what was going on with the country weather it was politically, athletically, or anything. If one just sent a messenger, it was easy for the messenger to lose communication in the traveling process, or one could misplace a written message. And of course these messages ... It was sent from the old Supreme Court chamber in the United States Capitol to his partner in Baltimore. Annie Ellsworth, the daughter of a friend of Morse's, chose the verse from Numbers 23:23. This was a very significant point in history as an improvement in communication; however, the message was difficult to understand at times and was very difficult and tedious to create. The telegraph did wonders to speed up process of communication; however, it was still not ideal for everyday interaction between families and neighbors. The telegraph Morse invented was a single telegraph, sending one message at a time, so Alexander Graham Bell tried to create a multiple telegraph, sending more than one message over the same wire. At the same time, Bell and Thomas Watson, an electrician, were working on another idea in secret – the telephone. On June 2, 1875, Alexander Graham Bell discovered he could hear a sound over an electric wire, the sound of a twanging clock spring. On March 10, 1876, Bell explained in his notebook entry that his experiment was finally successful. That day he said the famous first words spoken into a telephone, "Mr. Watson, come here, I want you." Finally solving the problems of the telegraph, Bell invented the telephone. The telegraph system was in place for about thirty years already, taking the telephone quite ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Importance Of Long Distance Communication For many years, there has been many ways to communicate, whether it is from smoke, animals, Telegraph, radios and telephones, the cellphone is the best way to communicate. Throughout generations, there has been many improvements and changes made to the cellphone that made it possible for the cellphone to replace computers and cameras. Nowadays cellphones such as iPhone and Android are not only used for texting and calling, they are now used for video calling, browsing the internet, taking pictures and much more. Before the invention of the cellphone, there were many other ways to communicate. Smoke was used to create codes that would later be converted into messages. They are called smoke signals. Many Native Americans used to use this system. After many years went by, Communication has evolved and Animals were used. Animals such as pigeons and Horses were used to send messages back and forth. Pigeons would be trained to fly across many nations and towns delivering important messages. Horses would also for transporting important messages. During the 1700s, Paul revere warned the town about the British, He warned everybody by yelling " The British are coming." If it wasn't for the horse, and his important shout, we wouldn't have won that battle and we wouldn't have been prepared for the British invasion. The Telegraph Revolutionized Long Distance Communication. It was invented during the 1800s by Samuel Morse. The telegraph operates by the use of electrical signals that run ... Coal was a vital source of fuel. Coal was also used to power the steam engine. One of the most important sources of power in the early Industrial Revolution was the steam engine. This allowed for machines with moving parts to be moved without manpower needing to be used. Steam engines found many uses in a variety of industries. Steam engines allowed the creation of smaller and better engines. Eventually, steam engines found their way into boats, railways, farms and automobiles. During the First Industrial Revolution, the fastest mode of transportation was the railway. While railways were effective for long–distance travel, short–distance travel was restricted to horse and carriage. During the Second Industrial Revolution, advances were made in transportation. The Homestead Act correlated with the trend of Manifest Destiny and encouraged settlers to migrate west. The Homestead Act encouraged western migration by providing 160 acres of public land. In exchange, homesteaders paid a small filing fee and were required to complete five years of continuous residence before receiving ownership of the land. After six months of residency, homesteaders also had the option of purchasing the land from the government for roughly $1.25 per acre. (Primary Documents in American History) The land that the government was distributing belonged to various tribes of the Plains Indians. By having the Homestead Act in effect and encouraging settlers to migrate west, Plains Indians were forced into reservations. The real impact of Manifest Destiny was that it sent many settlers west, without realizing that the settlers were taking land from the Indians. The Indians that lived in the reservations had just enough food to keep their population alive, as well as living in unsanitary conditions with bacteria and diseases everywhere. The two options that the Indians had was to either live in the reservations with little to no food or to face genocide. Some Indian tribes tried to make amends with American troops who ushered the natives to reservations, but some American troops turned on the Indians. One incident of the American troops killing Indians was the Nez Perce war. This war was over a conflict of land and how some US troops did not agree on the settlement of the land. The war resulted in over 100 casualties towards the Indians and was stated as a genocide of and Indian tribe. The second act that was passed by the United States government was the Dawes Act. • 65. The Key Inventions In The Industrial Revolution THE ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH commonly known as TELEGRAPH The Telegraph changed everything from how wars were fought to how people would communicate in a faster and more efficient manner. This invention along with the Steam Engine, was one of the key inventions in the Industrial Revolution. Why was this? Up until this time, it took many hours, days and even months for letters to arrive at their destination. Due to the time delay in the delivery of letters, when they finally did arrive, the information contained in them was usually irrelevant, as such a great deal of time had passed by. For example, if somebody sent a letter stating that a family member was ill, by the time the time the person to whom the letter was written received the letter, the sick person could of either recovered or died. • 69. The Invention Of The Telephone Most people use telephones on a daily basis, usually without the user considering what process the inventors like Alexander Graham Bell went through in order to produce the first ever version of this device. The telephone has served an important role in connecting people throughout the world with the push of a few buttons. First beginning its journey in the 1830s, the telephone started out as a simple telegraph, invented by Samuel Morse (history.com). According to Antonio, the telegraph was the first seen form of long distance communication. The telegraph evolved slowly within the years to come as Alex Graham Bell sought to improve this machinery and advance it in hope of creating hearing aids for his mother (pbs.org). Throughout time the telegraph evolved into what today's generation calls a telephone. Alexander Graham Bell was a Scottish American who first came to the United States as an adult. (Farley). He served as a teacher for deaf students (pbs.org). His mother was hearing–impaired. Graham sought to create a type of hearing aid in order to help his mother and other hearing impaired students. Along the way while tinkering with the telegraph in hopes to invent some sort of a hearing aid, Bell accidently stumbled upon the telephone. Therefore, instead of inventing hearing aids, which is what he initially set out to do, he invented the telephone. • 71. Merger Of Telecommunications Companies : At & T And T Mobile This paper will examine the proposed merger of two telecommunications companies: AT&T and T– Mobile. The purpose is to determine whether such a merger would be in the best interest of the telecommunications industry, as well as the consumers served by the industry. In order to adequately understand the environment contemplated by such a merger, this paper will examine the history of antitrust laws in the United States; with particular focus on the monopolies serving as a template for what would happen should the merger occur. Finally, the paper will make an assertion as to the advisedness of such a merger and provide evidence to support that assertion. "Keep Them Separate" – The AT&T/T–Mobile Merger "When competition exists, consumers win. It drives innovation, investment and economic benefits" (Wheeler, 2016). Scarcely a month ago, Tom Wheeler, the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), made that statement as part of prepared remarks delivered to the Competitive Carriers Association at its convention in Seattle, Washington. Given the mission of the Competitive Carriers Association, one could infer that Chairman Wheeler was, indeed, "preaching to the choir." The organization is the special interest group representing regional and national "competitive wireless carriers and their stakeholders" (Competitive Carriers Association, 2011). • 73. Moral Panics And Media Panics Moral Panics and Media Panics A moral panic is a phenomenon that is examined and understood in an unbiased fashion. He studied the way a piano works; how its strings vibrated back and forth. The elder Bell encouraged Alexander and instilled an appreciation for learning and intellectual pursuits. By age 16, he had joined his father in his work with the deaf and soon had full charge of his father's London operations. In July, 1870, the family settled in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. There, they had set up a workshop to continue his study on the human voice. In 1871, Bell moved to Boston and he began to work on a device that would allow the telegraph transmission of several messages set to different frequencies. He found financial backing through two local investors. These local investors had been Thomas Sanders and Gardiner Hubbard. At this time, a device called the telegraph was the fastest way to send messages. Between 1873 and 1874, Bell spent long days and nights trying to perfect the telegraph. Bell wanted to make the telegraph work faster and to find a way to send more than one message over a wire at a time. While he was working on that, he got an even bigger idea. What if voices could travel by wire from place to place? That would be faster than the telegraph. Bell was not good at building things.
