Music Magazine Shot Planning Guide
1. Music magazine shot planning
shots I am planning to use
how I went about taking them
2. This is an image I took of my main artist. I had originally wanted
to use this image as the main image for my cover page. My
plan was to cut out the background and place the image of
the artist onto a white or plain coloured background.
however after discussions with my teacher we came to the
conclusion that it was un-suitable. There were a few reasons
why it was not suitable, one being that the artist isn't facing
the camera and not enough of his face can be seen. I have
Since chosen another image where the artist is facing the
camera and he is standing in front of a plain background
therefore there is no need for me to cut the image onto a
plain background. I originally wanted my front cover image to
be black and white as this is an idea i saw used on a
magazine of my genre and liked. I have since changed my
mind as the colouring of the image without editing is nice and
i wanted to keep it. For this reason i have used this image
featured for my double page spread article. I have changed
the colouring of the image to black and white and it fits in very
well with the colour scheme of my page.
3. This was the second image that I wanted to have as my front
cover image, yet due to the layout of it i struggled to lay out
my cover. I liked this image as the two artists featured in the
image are showing blank facial expressions and are wearing
bland, plain clothing which is found common on artists
featuring on magazine covers of my genre. I found it difficult
to arrange my text and realised it was too far away from usual
conventions of covers. For this reason i decided once again
that this was possibly not the best choice for my magazine
cover. I realised that I needed a shot of just one main artist so
as to lay it out as though it is a usual magazine of my chosen
genre. I was lucky enough to have another image that I had
taken in this shoot which relatively fit conventions of magazine
covers. The background colour also works well as the black
font I had chosen to use can be read very easily.
4. This is the image that features in my contents page. It is an
image to represent an album cover of the artist that is
featured in my double page spread. The image is simple and
is of a guitar. I took this image by resting the guitar against a
white sheet as a background. I had originally wanted an
image of a full guitar however after taking this one I decided
that I preferred it and thought it looked more as though it
could be the cover of an album rather than just an image of a
full guitar. The image is quite bright as i made sure to have as
much artificial lighting in the room as i could.
5. This is the image I have chosen to use for my front
cover. It fits into conventions of cover images of my
magazine genre as there is minimal facial expression by
the artist, and he is wearing black clothing. The
background of the image is light therefore enabling me
to use dark font upon it which stands out clearly. The
pale background contrasts with the dark font of the title
block which means it can clearly be spotted. It slightly
varies from usual conventions due to the fact that the
artist is positioned left of centre and slightly lower in the
image than thought most common, meaning that the
text is positioned above and mainly to the right of the
image. Although this goes against usual conventions I
believe its fits well on my cover and I have attempted
to use the space as effectively as possible. I struggled
slightly setting out my cover and using this image for the
reason that I had initially wanted all of the text on my
cover to be black and white, however white text on this
image doesn't stand out too well and wasn't as easy to
read as is thought necessary on my cover. It is
thoroughly important that people can acquire the
knowledge of the articles present within the magazine
by looking at the cover alone, therefore it is imperative
that the writing stands out dramatically and clearly
