The document analyzes the use of sound and music in two movie trailers. In the first trailer for The Hunger Games: To Kill a Mockingjay, music builds tension and introduces characters. Dialogue is accompanied by decreasing music volume. Sounds of war include screams and explosions. In the second trailer for Horrible Bosses 2, prison sounds set the scene and dramatic music builds anticipation. Popular music plays throughout, with pauses for comedic dialogue. Both trailers effectively use music and sounds to engage audiences.

QUESTION SIX
EXPLORE THE USE OF SOUND / MUSIC IN TWO
DIFFERENT TEASER TRAILER. ANALYSE THE
EFFECTIVENESS OF THE CHOICE MADE REGAURDING
THE USE OF SOUND / MUSIC.

The first teaser trailer:
In the teaser trailer for the hunger games: To kill a
mockingjay music and sound has been used for many
different effects. The teaser trailer begins with music being
played on a piano. The pace of the music is quite fast
and indicates that there is a matter at hand causing
great tension. The pace and volume of the music builds
almost immediately demonstrating a growing tension and
causing the audience to feel as if there is soon to be an
important piece of action or clip of drama to sit as the
climax for the music.

The first teaser trailer:
There is then used a sound effect of a plane which is quite
loud, yet still not louder than the music, and the trailer itself
then features a shot of this war-craft coming into land. When
that sound effect ends there is voice heard, at first the viewer
may think it to be a voiceover, however we are quickly
introduced to two characters in conversation. This is effective
as it allows us to be introduced to some of the characters in the
film. It too is effective because we then feel almost as if we
know the voice of the male whom continues speaking through
the entire teaser trailer.

The first teaser trailer:
The first piece of dialogue that we hear is a male figure saying
‘no one else can do this but her’. This immediately makes the
audience question what exactly the ‘this’ that he speaks of is,
and with the previous shot of the war craft may jump to
conclusions that it is regarding her fighting in a war. This
however is true, and later in the trailer this is confirmed. For this
reason it shows that this immediate piece of dialogue we hear
alone says a lot about the storyline of the film.

The first teaser trailer:
Loud music then resumes and accompanies a shot of a run
down abandoned warehouse looking building. A second
character, this time a female, is then seen to say ‘she wont be
able to handle it’. These two elements of dialogue presents to
the audience contrasting ideas, demonstrating conflict. The
female then continues to say ‘the games destroyed her’. Now
as members of the audience the majority will have seen the
prequel to this film, or may have read the book, therefore
knowing which games this character is speaking of. However to
those viewers who may not have seen the prior film, it gives
them an insight that there is a back-story to the events of this
film.

The first teaser trailer
When both the male and female characters speak their
dialogue, the volume of the background music decreases
dramatically. This is not only effective but necessary to draw all
of the viewers attention to the information that is being
presented to us by the characters. The dialogue between the
two characters then continues as the music in the background
builds. When the exchange of dialogue has come to an end the
music in the background continues to build with loud
crescendo’s of music at different intervals, until finally it comes
to a hault. A brief pause in the music accompanied by a black
screen leaves the viewers with great anticipation. After a quick
piece of speaking there is an on screen shot of an army.

The first teaser trailer
As a war breaks out the sound effects of shootings and
explosions, followed by screams and cries for help signify the
destructive nature of the events occurring. This continues for a
while with once again a building piece of music in the
background. Until the music comes to a dramatic and
unexpected stop and the shot is focused on a female character.
In the silence of the action, for the first time in the trailer, the
female character is asked if she will be fighting with them in the
war. She answers ‘I will’ and the music then continues until
finishing with a large crash, and the hunger games emblem is
showed on screen marking the end of the trailer, and informing
viewers of the films title. There is then heard a short four note
melody played on an instrument possibly the chimes, which is
known as the melody for this trilogy of films.

The second teaser trailer
The second trailer that I have chosen to explore is Horrible
bosses 2. The first shot displayed is of a prison, the sound
effects that accompany it are those of chains and sirons, along
with the sound of opening and closing sells. A sound of a bell
signifies a certain time has come. There is quet background
music which appears to be quite up-beat and of a fast tempo.

The second teaser trailer
As a man is seen to sit down behind the glass of a prison
meeting room, there is dramatic building music which can be
heard. It sounds almost like screeching and is heard commonly
in horror films, such as a particularly famous one ‘pyscho’ by
Alfred Hitchcock. For this reason the audience wait in angst for
the climax of the music so that they can find out whom it is that
this prisoner is faced with meeting. The music then reaches its
highest point and the camera is panned around, and an anti
climax creates a comic effect as it is three very innocent and
humorous looking men whom face him.

The second teaser trailer
Dialogue exchanged between the four gives us an insight into
the relationship between them. Then can be heard the
introduction to a very popular song at the current time, one
which young adults whom are the target audience of this film
would recognise and like. Over the top of this music a man can
be speaking. Apparent that he is speaking to the three men that
we met before he begins to discuss with them how they ‘tried to
kill their own bosses’ and now have an even bigger plan ahead.

The second teaser trailer
The beat of the song in the background continues to get louder
and the audience who know the song are in wait for the beat to
drop. However just at the brink of the drop, the music is paused
and a man is seen and heard slurping on his drink. This would
provoke a comic effect from the audience, and is effective as it
makes the audience wait to see what is coming. After the man
whom was seen slurping tells the three men that if they want to
be bad, they have to act like it, the music resumes and the beat
drops.

The second teaser trailer
The action in the trailer then shows the three men attempting to
walk in slow motion, they are then interrupted by a by passer.
This fits in perfectly with the music of the teaser trailer, making
it seem as though they were filmed both together. The music
then stays off as the three bicker and one walks off in
embarrassment. The music then resumes once more as the
title of the film is shown on screen. As the action progresses
the three men arrive at the house of a female who was in the
prequel of this film. The music continues over the conversing of
two characters whilst still being slightly quieter. The music
pauses once more when the female replies ‘and?’, as this is a
reaction that is thought to be unexpected in relation to the
question asked, and would most likely make the viewers laugh.
The pause in music is therefore done there to draw attention to
it.
