Working Title:
The silent text
What is it called? This can change if you think of something better later
Audience:
My audience will be aged around 17-19 years old, as it will have quite a lot of suspense that will
keep their focus and concentration. Also as it is a short film there is less chance of the viewer
finding it tedious and losing interest in the film, as teenagers tend to have a shorter attention span
than adults. The short film will have an age rating of 12a so younger teenagers can watch the short
film. The film will be targeted towards males as there will be violence in the film that normally
males like but not too graphic that it will put them off watching the short film and compromise the
age rating. People with the social statues of E-C1 as they have more spare time and does not take
a lot of concentration to watch a short film. I’m targeting socially conscious people as I think people
that are in socially conscious type B group would enjoy the film the most, as in my film there is an
antisocial behaviour that would intrigue them.
Rationale (approx. 100 words)
Having completed the video game projects I have gained a knowledge on how to add diegetic
sound effects into my production to make a higher quality film as if the game did not have
background music there would be silent parts in the game which would make the game seem
rushed and have no effort put into it which would put people off. I have noticed, from my video
game project that if you have good character and evil character conflict in your products people
enjoy them more as it gives a sense of suspense as viewers always want the good characters to
come out on top so people will want to see how the film plays out. I have studied film studies on
my last course, which was level 2 creative media. There we learnt about the mise-en-scene in
good detail so I am able to apply my knowledge of that to choose the right props to make the
scene look more realistic which will help to engage the viewer more.
Project Concept (approx. 200 words)
The concept of my short film is that a family member is kidnapped and held at gunpoint and the
brother has to get her back. There are 2 kidnappers and the opening scene is the two of them
kidnapping an eighteen-year girl and the car drives away as the brother is trying to chase the car.
He starts filling a briefcase full of money for the ransom, there is a shot of him looking at his watch
then getting a text from an unknown number saying ‘time is running out’ he goes out and starts
running to the place where they’re keeping the girl he gives the briefcase to the kidnappers then
the film fades out. I will use a variety of long shots and medium shots such as the car driving away
will be a extreme long shot as getting the full car in the shot would be hard with a medium shot and
would be hard to express what is happening in the scene properly and confuse the viewer which
will ruin the film. I will need to research abandoned buildings so that I can shoot a scene of the
kidnapper holding the girl and sending the text saying time is running out to the brother. As there is
no dialogue in the film I will need to research thriller background music to use as inspiration for my
film as having sharp low-pitched background will be good to create suspense.
Production Techniques (approx. 150 words)
I will need a tripod, a camera the tripod will make my film look more professional as their will be no
shaking in the shots which will make the film look unrealistic. I will have sound effects of screams
in my film as there is no dialogue allowed but screaming helps to shows signs of scared behaviour
which help to grab the viewers attention and keep them entertained. One of the cast must be able
to drive as they have to drive away in a car scene. Although there could be a different driver in the
car at that time it would look better if one of the actual kidnappers was driving. If I decide to do a
POV running scene of one of the characters chasing after the car I will need a go pro but a part
from that, a tripod and camera will be sufficient.
Evaluation (approx. 50 words)
I will look back on all my work and look at all the strengths and weakness’s in my work and then
discuss them. I will also think about what I would have done if I had more time with the project and
how I would have done it. Using the weakness’s I will discuss what I would do in future projects to
make sure my product is more appealing and so there is no mistakes.
How do you plan to evaluate the work? Reference conducting on-going evaluation and your final
self-reflection, analysing your work and its outcomes.
