Pitch
Ben Lister
Why is my product suitable to
Paramount Pictures?
I believe that my product would be suitable for Paramount Pictures because they
have previously produced top selling horror films such as ‘Paranormal Activity’
and ‘Insidious.’ Both of these top selling horrors are based on a psychotic
antagonist and this is what my product will be based on. Due to Paramount
Pictures being in the Big Six, my product will be presented to a large audience
and it would be advertised very well so my audience will know about my product
and this means it will be successful. Paramount Pictures is a major conglomerate
with lots of subsidiaries which will be able to promote my product using synergy.
My Target Audience
After doing intense research into my target audience, this is what I found out
about them.
I found out that my product would be aimed at both females and males aged
between 16-19. I found out that they enjoy playing sports and listening to music
in there spare time. I also found out that they enjoying seeing there friends.
From the questionnaire, there was a different range of occupations such as
student, waiter and sales assistant. They also like to scared by horror films and
this is why they watch them. There favourite films are paranormal/psychotic
horrors. I have a very large target audience and this would mean my product has
potential to be very successful.
Conventions of Genre Pt.1
Sound
 Both diegetic and non-diegetic sound would be used to create fear and
tension.
 Non-diegetic music is also used to create fear and tension but also to grab
the audiences attention.
 Examples of conventional sounds include; footsteps, creaking doors,
music boxes, children’s toys etc.
Conventions of Genre Pt.2
Mise-en-scene
 Low key lighting would be used to connote fear and dark areas of the scene
which are always scary because they are unpredictable.
 Costumes used would include ripped clothing, dark clothing and every day
clothing as this would be based on just every day events.
 Props used would include weapons, children's toys, baby monitors etc.
 Setting used would be a family house as it is very conventional setting and it
being in a isolated location with empty rooms create the tension fear.
Conventions of Genre Pt.3
Editing
 Long takes would be used to build up tension.
 Short takes would be used to build and tension and give the feeling to the
audience that something is going to happen.
 Fast paced editing would be used to build tension and fear and to scare the
audience.
Conventions of Genre Pt.4
Camerawork
 Handheld cameras would be used in my product as they are very good in scary
movies as they build the tension. When a characters moves really slow, they
give the impact something is going to happen.
 Close up will be used to show characters emotions and reactions which in turn
will create the fear and tension aspect.
 High angle shots will be used to make the characters look vulnerable and to
show how scared they are.
 Low angle shots will be used to make the antagonist look strong and powerful
and connote the power they have over the protagonist.
Conventions of Form Pt.1
Sound
 Minimal dialogue in the trailer so it doesn’t give to much of the story away.
 The diegetic sound clips will be made louder so they stand out and make the
trailer scarier.
Conventions of Form Pt.2
Camerawork
 A lot of different camera angles and shot types will be used to show events in
the film so that the audience get an insight into the film but it doesn’t give to
much away.
Conventions of Form Pt.3
Editing
 Fast paced editing will be used during the entire trailer to make look more
exciting and build up the tension which in turn will scared the audience.
 Fade to blacks will be used at the end of exciting parts of the trailer so it
doesn’t give much away and it will also allow the trailer to flow well together.
My idea for production
I believe that the idea I have come up with will attract my audience to my
product and it will also be very successful. My plot for my product is based a
psychotic character that has released from a mental health hospital. Everyone is
aware of his release due to a news report which will be included. The antagonist
then starts to stalk a young female who’s parents are out of town for the
weekend and he is aware of this. As she is at home one night alone, the female
character keeps seeing the figure of the protagonist out the window and in other
areas of the house. A music box plays the same piece of music every time she
sees him. She associates the music with her fear for the antagonists and drives
her towards insanity. The end of my trailer sees the antagonist in the females
bedroom about to grab her as it fades to black with the title of film coming up. I
believe this plot is very affective as it will scare the audience and it doesn’t give
to much of the story away which is important in a movie trailer.
How will my product use conventions?
I have ensured that I have used conventions of genre within my idea as I have used a
family home for my setting which is conventional because a family house setting is
used a lot in horror films. I have also used very conventional characters, I have used a
family protagonist because they will be seen as weak and helpless while I have used a
male antagonist as they are more powerful and scary. I have also considered other
aspects such as mise-en-scene, sound and camerawork. Screaming and a music box
music are conventional for horror films and they are what I will use in my trailer.
There wont be much dialogue so the story doesn’t get given away which is also
conventional. I will use low and high angle shots to show the dominance and weakness
of both main characters this is conventional. I will also use close ups to show the
emotion on the faces of the characters. The costumes and make up used will be basic
and every day. As the film is set as in everyday situation, normal clothes can be worn.
There will not be much make up used but it will be used to show blood which is
conventional. I will also make sure my product uses conventions of form because it is
important that my trailer is effective. I would do this by editing my trailer affectively
so there are fades to black and also the clips are the correct length for the event in
the trailer.
How my product will appeal to my
audience?
My product would appeal to the audience because of the plot I have used is
exciting and scary which will make it appeal to the target audience and attract
them to my product. From my research I found out people like horror films with
psychotic characters in and this is what my product has and it will make it appeal
to the audience. I have also set my product in a family home which is appealing
location for a horror film. I will also use editing to make my product appealing as
I will use fade to blacks to make scenes scary and to make sure not to much of
the storyline is given away. This would appeal to the audience and I have also
considered the camerawork. I will use low and high shots to show the dominance
and weakness of the characters. I will use close up to show the characters
emotion which is appealing as the audience will be able to relate to the
characters. Using short clips will also makes it appeal as a fast paced trailer will
make it jumpy and scary.
